Cowboy Poet Rich Bellert
By Henry Miller When Rich Bellert sat down and began talking, suddenly, everything seemed right in the world. Bellert – a Cowboy Poet and storyteller – has a smooth as silk voice that’s mesmerizing and resonates of peace. His voice is one of those you would expect to be on a phone app to help calm you as he tells stories of cowboys from long ago. His tone and pitch, like a great salesperson’s, captivates the listener. Not surprisingly, Bellert was a great salesman years ago. Maybe that’s where the pitch and story-telling ability first started developing. Bellert, an Excelsior, Minn., native who resides in Aladdin Villas in Mission during the winter, has been wintering the Rio Grande Valley for 19 years. Bellert is a popular figure with that recognizable voice. He has done Cowboy Poetry and recitations all over the country, including for 15 years at the Winter Texan Fiesta in Mission. He performed
for 12 years at the Rio Grande Children’s Home annual fundraiser, has appeared four times at the South Dakota State Fair and was “legitimized as a Cowboy Poetry and Storyteller” when he took second place in the National Cowboy Poetry Rodeo in the Reciter Serious Division. “The guy who won forgot his line,” Bellert joked. “Yet he still won. I guess they weren’t going to let a newcomer come in and take first place.” Bellert was born and raised on a dairy farm in Ohio. “We were very poor, but we didn’t know it because everyone else around us was as poor as we were,” he said. When asked how he developed his skills as a reciter he claimed no formal teachings in school (he appeared in some school plays, though) and he was a salesman basically all his life. That’s more than likely where the Cowboy Poet began his training. “A friend came up to me in his new Chevy and showed me the car and told

Louise flexes the muscle in her arm showing the muscle she developed as Rosie the Riveter and kept through hard work on the farm.
By Kathy Olivarez Louise Tolander Unkrich of Swedesburg, Iowa, and Alamo Palms Mobile Park here in the Valley, is one of almost 300,000 women who earned the name “Rosie the Riveter” during World War II. After graduating from Olds High School in 1943, she moved to Des Moines, Iowa to train in drafting and airplane design at the American Institute Technical School for four weeks. Following her training she moved to Omaha, Nebraska where she worked for Glen Martin Bomber Plant in Plattsmouth, Nebraska, just south of Omaha. There she worked on the first B-29 bombers, helping build ailerons, which were the wing flaps that slowed the planes down. Thus, Louise literally became one of the first “Rosie the Riviters.” Her team of two men and two women worked together. One person would rivet, using a 10-pound rivet gun, while anoth-
er would hold the bucker in place. It was hard, tiring work, she said, but she did it eight hours a day, and her team came to be known as the fastest team in the plant. They completed the ailerons for one plane in just eight hours of continuous work, when it normally took other teams about 24 hours. Women from all over the country came to Omaha to help with the work. It was hard and noisy work. There were about 50 holes in the ailerons that had to be lined up and bucked. A steel bar called a buck bar was placed behind the sport where the rivet was going to keep it in place. The workers were issued earplugs but there were no safety glasses or other precautions taken as one would see today in similar jobs. There was not much time for socialization and the constant noise from the riveting made conversations almost impossiSee ROSIE pg. 33

Winter Texans absolutely love BorderFest
By Kathy Olivarez A walk through BorderFest on opening day, Friday, March 3, we found numerous Winter Texans exploring the festival. Down the gangway near the entrance of the food court stood a large replica of the Statue of Liberty representing the theme of this year’s BorderFest: “Celebrating the USA.” The first Winter Texan couple we encountered was Jerry and Susie Tiell of Ohio who were at BorderFest for the first time. When asked how they liked it, Susie replied, “For $10 to get in there were lots of shows that could be seen, music to be heard and other things like the market place to visit.” They were on their way to get a seat at hypnotist Erick Kand’s show after having been to the food court to enjoy a meal.

Later they were planning to catch the Clay Walker concert. In the food court where many Winter Texans were enjoying a meal, Sharon Montgomery of Missouri complimented the food choices. She and her husband David were enjoying a plate of fajita tacos, which she described as “Yummy.” That opinion was shared by Luther Wiirre of Minnesota who was also eating tacos but looked around and said “There is lots of good stuff to eat here.” It was his first year at BorderFest as well and he was impressed by what he had seen so far. He had not planned to come but his friends convinced him and he was enjoying it. His friends Dave and Sally Balderson from Kansas said this was their seventh year in the Valley but only their second See BORDERFEST pg. 4

From pg. 3 time to come to BorderFest. They had come last year and enjoyed it so much they came back again and brought friends. Dave was looking forward to the illuminated parade happening a little later in the evening. “We don’t have anything like that at home,” Balderson said. They had also been to the Hidalgo Festival of Lights in December and enjoyed it as well. Both men commented that they enjoyed the way veterans were respected and were treated in the Rio Grande Valley. Veterans who had identification as Wiire and Balderson did, were admitted free of charge. Diane and Steve Sams, also of Kansas were enjoying the food as well. “There is so much food to choose from. This fair is more like a state fair at home. Our city fairs are nothing like this.” Becky Heuer of Ohio said she had just come to get something to eat and listen to the music. She commented about the great variety of food available as her husband, Don, returned with turkey leg in hand. Becky said she appreciated the way all the different types of entertainment were separated. The carnival was completely separated from the food, the shopping was all in a separate tent, and the different shows were spread out so one did not conflict with another. The fun things like the science lab for children and the White
www.wttrgv.com
Tiger Show and Sea Lion Show were in separate locations. At home things seemed to get jumbled together and she preferred the way BorderFest set things up. Don Heuer was impressed by the different types of music that were available. Onstage in the food court, Hidalgo High School’s Mariachi Nuevas Raices was on stage. The couple was enjoying their music and looking forward to watching more musical shows later in the evening. There were several to choose from including an Elvis impersonator, Native American Dance Tribes with drums, a zydeco band from Louisiana, and of course, the Clay Walker concert coming up later in the evening. There were other choices on Saturday and Sunday with a full day of Gospel music being held inside the State Farm Arena. Becky Heuer also liked the idea of the International Abrazo where the mayors of Hidalgo and Reynosa met in the middle of the bridge for a hug to promote good international relations. The Heuers live in the same county in Ohio as John Sager did before he moved to Branson and had heard him sing at church. They hoped to catch one of his concerts before the season was over and commented they were truly impressed with the quality of the entertainment available to Winter Texans in the Rio Grande Valley. At 7 p.m. the illuminated night parade See BORDERFEST pg. 5

From pg. 4 drove through the grounds with a variety of floats that delighted visitors. Hal and Mary Amos of Pennsylvania were also impressed with the respect shown to veterans in the Rio Grande Valley and the free admission to BorderFest for veterans. New to the Valley, they were impressed by not only the quality of BorderFest, they liked the music and entertainment found here during season, the Don-Wes Flea Market and the folklorico performances they had attended. Moving to the Sea Lion Show, there were many opportunities along the way. Throngs of children were enjoying the science lab. The Elvis impersonator passed on his way to a show. The hypnotist tent was full of people. Inside the sea lion performance area, children were running up to the enclosure and shaking the gates to try and get the attention of the sea lions who periodically stuck they heads above water to see what was going on. At one point they jumped out of the water and onto the stage, as if to say, “Let’s get this show moving,” before diving back into their water pens. Jolene Brink of South Dakota was waiting for the show to start and said she really loved everything about BorderFest. From South Dakota, she said there was nothing like this at home – not even the state fair. It was her third time to attend BorderFest. “Most of our parades have a couple of
www.wttrgv.com tractors and pieces of farm equipment and not much else.” She was impressed by the Illuminated Night Parade. The weather was great. The temperature had dropped down into the mid-60s, which caused Don Bitek, also of South Dakota to comment, “It was 40 degrees below zero when I left home in January. It would be impossible to have an outdoor celebration like BorderFest at home in January.” He was definitely enjoying the mild weather. Because of the mild weather the couple often enjoys square dancing and attending the rodeo events offered in the Valley. Finally, it was time for the sea lions to come out and the children in the crowd went wild as they pranced onto the stage shaking hands, catching rings around their necks. Kimmie, Sierra and Zoey did tricks, stuck out their tongues, spoke in growling tones and splashed in the water on command to get their share of fish as a reward. The trainer said Zoey was injured by pollution and unable to live in the wild any longer. She was the youngest seal and still in training. Kimmie was the old pro and Sierra was somewhere in the middle. Zoey was being trained to throw plastic bottles found in the water into a recycle bin. There were so many exciting events going on at the same time, it was impossible to attend them all. But there was plenty for everyone to pick and choose what they wanted to see. BorderFest is indeed one of the best festivals this writer has seen in the United States.

Bentsen Palms RV hosts Mexican Fiesta By Kathy Olivarez Bentsen Palms RV Park has come up with many innovative ways to honor their older residents in the past years including English Teas, a Hawaiian Luau, German Fests, Roundups and Mardi Gras celebrations. Host Clayton Spears chose a Mexican Fiesta as the theme for this year’s recognition dinner. A dinner of beef and chicken enchiladas, tacos with all the fixings, Spanish rice, refried beans and salsa, and drinks were served. A tres leches cake and Mexican wedding cookies were served for dessert. According to activity director Marcie Swenson, except for the cake and cookies, the entire meal was made from scratch by the ladies from the resort who worked several days putting it all together. The cake and cookies were donated by Gilberto Rodriguez who married sweetheart Lupita in the reception hall on Friday night. Residents attended the wedding Friday and enjoyed the mariachis who performed so much that Gilberto
asked them to come back on Saturday and play again for the Mexican Fiesta. Guests were very surprised and happy to hear Mariachi Juvenil Azteca again. They played songs like, “La Bamba,” “Guadalajara,” and “La Cucaracha.” People honored at the meal were couples who have been married 55 years or more, including Harvey and Jeanne Nelson, Dick and Marilyn Gibson, Charles and Mary Ann Evens. Those married 60 years or more included Stu and Dona Martin, Ray and Bertie Ramsey and Don and Marilyn Ramberg. Also honored were residents who are over 90 years old, including Bill Riggs, Leo McDaniel and Don Ramberg. After the dinner and the ceremony, they were given an opportunity to break a piñata also donated by Gilberto Rodriguez. It was more difficult than it looked. Several people took swings. Stu Martin managed to break the stick but not the piñata. Using a cane Charles Evans was the lucky one who actually broke the piñata open. Everyone had a great time.

Food pantries across the Rio Grande benefit from Winter Texans’ help
Winter Texans are a great part of why the food banks across the Rio Grande Valley are successful. Not only do they assist by working at the local food pantries while they are staying in the Rio Grande Valley, many Winter Texans clean out their pantries before they return home and donate unused food items to the pantries. Because many Winter Texans will be leaving in March, it might be a good time now to look into those pantries and see what can be donated. The Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley located in Pharr estimates that one in two children in the Rio Grande Valley go
to bed hungry. They may have had dinner but it was of such poor nutritional value they are still hungry. The estimate is one in four people in the Valley are food insecure, having to make choices of paying bills or eating. Many hard working adults and senior citizens simply cannot make ends meet and go without food for several meals or even days. Winter Texans who are leaving the RGV for the season who have non-perishable items left in their pantries can donate them directly to the food pantry. Any item used to make a meal can be used by a hungry family in the RGV.

The Food Bank of the RGV is located in the old Valley Fruit Company packing plant located at 724 N. Cage Blvd in Pharr. Tours of the facility are available on request. The old packing plant sign is still on top of the building. For information call (956) 682-8101. There are many food pantries located across the Rio Grande Valley as every community has a need. Loaves and Fishes in Harlingen is a “no questions asked” food pantry. Larger than other community food pantries, it also operates a homeless shelter and soup kitchen that serves three meals a day week days and breakfast and dinner on weekends. Loaves and Fishes is open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and does take non-perishable donations for
the food pantry. It is located at 514 South E. Street in Harlingen. For more information, call (956) 423-1014. Unlike the Brownsville food pantry supported by the main food bank in Pharr, there are a number of food pantries like the one in Mission that are supported by churches and individuals and do not get donations from the Food Bank of the RGV in Pharr. They will also give emergency food and items to anyone who is in need and they often help people from smaller neighboring cities who come because it takes time for the paperwork to get food from the other food banks to be processed and their need is immediate. While they do receive donations from Winter Texans, by the time the Winter Texans returned See FOOD PANTRIES pg. 9

Dazzling Dolphins host Red Hat Beach Party at Schlitterbahn
On Tuesday, Feb. 28, the Dazzling Dolphins, a Red Hat Society Chapter from South Padre Island held their annual Red Hat Beach Party at Schlitterbahn Beach Resort. Ladies from several Red Hat Chapters in the Rio Grande Valley attended the event. The theme of this year’s event was Mexican Fiesta and each of the ladies was dressed in festive fiesta wear of all designs and colors. They were served a meal of cheese enchiladas, rice, beans, beef and chicken tacos, and brownies. Before the meeting started, Davis Sellers and Doyle Heim provided music with a guitar and accordion duet. Honored as the oldest Red Hatter attending the party, 90-year-old Betty Hardin was presented a gift. Then the youngest Red or Pink Hatter, Trina Wybierala, also received a gift. After the meal each group got up to model their costumes and have their pictures made. A number of different Red Hat groups attended the Red Hat Beach Party, which was hosted by the Dazzling Dolphins of South Padre Island. Green Gate Grove of Mission was rec-
ognized as the group that drove the farthest, followed by the Rio Valley Fillies of Mission. Other groups attending included the Ravishing Relics of Alamo, Rio Red Hat Society from Donna, Pine to Palm Red Hatters from Weslaco, Palmdale Patooties of La Feria, Queens of Hearts from
Alamo Country Club, Conch Pretenders of South Padre Island, and the Red Hat Dollies from San Benito. The ladies enjoyed renewing old acquaintances with friends in other chapters and meeting new ladies from other chapters across the Valley.

SHARYLAND DENTAL CARE
I am so appreciative and grateful to have a Dentist who focuses on me, the patient when I visit Sharyland Dental and Dr. Young. The staff is always so friendly, informative and strive to make sure my time with them is a comfortable and pleasant experience. Any time I have a dental emergency, Dr. Brann and the staff at Sharyland Dental make every effort to see me as soon as possible. I know that I will receive the best care, knowledge and services when in their hands. Yes, dental work in Mexico is less expensive but I have experienced the downside to low cost dental work. Trying to find a cheaper dentist ultimately cost me a lot more money to repair and a lot more pain to endure. So I make sure to refer Sharyland Dental to all my friends and family because I know they too will be met with the most friendly and professional care that I have. WINTER TEXAN TIMES FOOD PANTRIES
From pg. 7 last fall the Mission Food Pantry was in dire straits. Fortunately, a drive was held and supplies were replenished thanks to the assistance of Winter Texans all over the Valley. Winter Texans in the Mission area are encouraged to make donations there. The Mission Food Pantry is located at 115 S. Mayberry in Mission. The food pantry in Peñitas serves an area in western Hidalgo County where almost all citizens in the area live under the poverty line. The food pantry is open Wednesday for preparation and Thursday morning for distribution of food supplies. For Winter Texans unable to go at that time, there is usually someone at the church in the mornings. If not, the min-

ister said there are tables outside where non-perishable items can be left. The church is located at 404 S. Main St. in Peñitas. Call (956) 358-7212. Winter Texans are encouraged to open their hearts to those in need and donate what they are not going to use to the needy instead of letting items sit there and get too old to use. Items such as canned foods (especially meats), rice, beans, and pasta in plastic unopened bags and other similar foods are welcomed. Items with self-opening cans that can be eaten without cooking are needed for the homeless. A few items from donors’ pantries may not seem like much, but when combined with the items donated by other Winter Texans, it makes a great deal of difference.

Attention Back Pain and Sciatica Sufferers! Back By Request…
Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “Amy and Frank did an outstanding job on my right leg and lower back, I feel so good that I can now put on my socks on my own and enjoy my time with my family.” - Reyes Garcia “Lately I am not paying a cleaning lady because I can do it myself!”- Roberta Barriere II “Now I can sleep the night through without pain.”- Marilyn Eisenmenger Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life. I’ve seen it many times. • It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… • It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… • It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… • It can ruin your travel plans… • And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems…and life problems. Here at Pure Physical Therapy, the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 100’s of people from right here in McAllen, and the rest of Hidalgo County who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica. It’s our SPECIALTY. By request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Pure Physical Therapy in McAllen Saturday, March 25, 2017 from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. Register now at: Link: purept.ptworkshops.com/mcallen/workshop?source=wtt If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: • The Single Biggest #1 Mistake back pain and sciatica sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… • The 3 Most Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica… • A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) • How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg… • What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. How Do I Register for the Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop? Call our office to register at (956) 994-8880. When you register, we will mail you The Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. We only have 40 seats available for the event…and this will be promoted on Face Book and mailed out to the general public. So if you would like to attend, be sure to register now…Call (956) 994-8880. Valley Shuffleboard News Two big shuffleboard events recently happened at the Pine to Palm Resort in Weslaco, reports Wally Bentt, RGV Shuffleboard Association vice president. On Sunday, Feb. 12, the park hosted the annual Gail Hoskins Shuffleboard Awards Banquet. This event honors those players who have excelled in the game of shuffleboard and who have dedicat-
ed many volunteer hours in support of this sport. Award recipients must have reached certain goals in tournaments as a player and be committed to organizing and supporting their in-park shuffleboard programs and the valley-wide tournaments. There are two governing bodies who oversee shuffleboard in this area. These

are the Rio Grande Valley Shuffleboard Association (RGVSA) and the Texas State Shuffleboard Association (TSSA). Each entity gives awards at this banquet. RGVSA award recipients this year were Gina Bassillion of Pine to Palm, Wally Bentt of Leisure World, Bill Hathcoat of Casa del Valle, Leslie McLean of Magic Valley, Ed Yauchzee of Casa del Sol and Ann Wright from Siesta Village. TSSA recipients were Tok Foster of Tropic Star, Peter Hildebrand of Pine to Palm, Warren King of Snow to Sun and
Joyce Lewis of Casa del Valle. Other awards included new 500 point players and the top ten players for amateur, expert and over 75 classes. The second event was the Mid-Valley Senior Olympics Shuffleboard Tournament, which was played on Friday, Feb. 17. Gold medal lady winners were Lorna Bentt and Vivian Swearns representing Leisure World Park and the men were Peter Hildebrand and Garth Bakke presenting Pine to Palm Resort.

W&I Resort honors veterans By Kathy Olivarez W&I Resort in Mission held its third annual flag burning ceremony and honored its veterans as well. Fifteen veterans, one from World War II and the rest from the Korean War were honored at a special flag burning ceremony where the veterans from their park, who fought to keep this country free, were also honored. The program was organized by the W&I Bicycle Club. The ceremony began with a prayer led by Ken DeWaard and Pledge of Allegiance led by Sam Smith, followed by the National Anthem sung by Carolyn Whitfield. Curtis Jackson and B.J. Johnson took the old flag from the pole in front of the rec hall down while Barbara Davison played Taps as it was retired. Members of the JROTC from Mission High School’s Eagle Battalion shook hands with each of the veterans being honored. Barbara Davidson read the names of the veterans being honored as the JROTC went down the line. Big John sang “I’m Proud to Be An American.” Dale Haaland read the words of “It’s a Grand Ole Flag” by Johnny Cash. Carolyn Whitfield ended the ceremony with “Land of Dreams.” Then the JROTC moved in a semi-circle around the burning barrels. They saluted as the flags were placed in the barrels. While there were 85 flags to be burned, only six were burned during the ceremony. The outdoors activities concluded with a tribute to the fallen soldier represented by boots, a gun and a helmet. The veterans and participants moved to the rec hall for recognitions and refreshments. Each veteran being honored during the ceremo-
ny was presented with a quilt made by the W&I Quilters. About 30 ladies participated in the project Those honored were Bob Agnew, Linus Berens, Darrel Bishop, Jerry Castelucio, Norm Clasen, Bob Fisher, Robert Gearhardt, Virgel Helm, Joe Holden Jerry Liedholt, Jim Miller, Frank Mossauer, Floyd Richards, Robert Volk and Art Mosih.
LaFloresta Golf Tournament raises funds for cancer Residents at LaFloresta RV Park, a small park in Mercedes, raised nearly $2,000 for the American Cancer Society in its 22nd Annual American Cancer Society Golf Tournament on Feb. 11. Some 81 Winter Texans competed in the mixed scrambles tourney. All money collected from the event, golf fees and donations, went directly to the American Cancer Society. Bob Fuller, a Winter Texan from St. Charles, Mo., has organized the tournament each year since 1996 and during that time, LaFloresta residents have raised over $44,000 for the ACS.

Victoria Palms offers new items on the lunch menu By Kathy Olivarez DONNA — Mark Arevalo, chef at Victoria Palms RV Resort, has added several new items to the resort’s restaurant menu. One item Arevalo says is popular with the ladies is the new spring salad, made with Spring greens and topped with Mandarin oranges, strawberries, almond slices, shredded mozzarella cheese and a raspberry vinaigrette. Another item is the Queen’s Chicken, which is chicken breast stuffed with spinach, mozzarella cheese and tomatoes resting on a cream base. Or try the Croque Monsieur sandwich made with two slices of Sourdough bread, dipped in a milk, egg, salt and garlic batter before being cooked like French toast. The bread is stuffed with ham and cheese, smothered in cheese sauce and served with a side of hash browns. Another option is the fish tacos made with blackened fish, which has become popular at the Friday fish fry. Several soups are new as well. The Chicken Chipotle with peppers and the Chicken Poblano with pureed green peppers are both new to the menu.

Chicken Chipotle Soup, Queen’s Chicken and Double Chocolate Cake
Tuesdays are burger nights and Arevalo has added a new Monster Burger with a fried egg on top. I asked him about the custom of adding the egg, which I have seen on the menu in several restaurants. Arevalo said it’s a Puerto Rican custom that has spread to the United States. Arevalo said the most popular burger is made with Swiss cheese and covered in mushrooms. The restaurant offers Philly sandwiches and continental clubs on sourdough bread and featuring cheddar cheese. I asked Arevalo what items were the most popular on the menu. He said many people love the liver and onions the restaurant serves. After listening to his menu options, Norma Reyes, Winter Texan Times sales and advertising director and I made selections. We chose the Chicken Chipotle soup. Reyes said it was spicy and had a bit of a kick to it! Both of us enjoyed it very much. We opted to try his Queen’s chicken. It was delicious! The chicken had a good flavor and was tender and moist. It was served with a side of grilled zucchini and squash that was crisp and flavorful. We also tried the blackened fish tacos that were also delicious! Arevalo makes his own blackening spices that have a special flavor. The tacos were very good. For dessert we shared a slice of his double chocolate cake, which has enough chocolate to make any chocoholic happy. Then we also shared a lemon bar, which Arevalo said was a best seller. That also was good. Arevalo said Chef Dave Roundtree is back again and still making omelets for the Sunday buffet with whatever the customer wants. He has probably made over 70,000 by now!

WINTER TEXAN TIMES COWBOY POET
From pg. 1 me it was paid for,” said Bellert, who had spent six years selling farm machinery. “That is what you can do when you sell Fuller Brushes.” A little more than a year later, Bellert had become the 11th highest producing Fuller Brush agent in the United States. “I was still just a kid,” he said. “But I discovered something. If I could move faster from place to place I could get 10 more sales calls in a day. So I ran.” After Fuller Brush, came a life and health insurance job where his region included parts of Minnesota, N. Iowa, South Dakota and Wisconsin. He remained with that job until his retirement – which lasted three weeks – and had 52 agents working under him at that time. Not one to be idle, he went right back to work selling insurance after “retiring.” So when it came to talking in front of people, it surely wasn’t a concern for Bellert. In fact, that’s exactly half of the pitch that fellow Cowboy Poet Red Johnson used on Bellert. “He told me ‘you should do Cowboy Poetry,” Bellert said. “‘You’ve got a good voice, and you’re definitely not afraid of people.” The first time he did a Cowboy Poetry reading, he recited the poem Buckskin Bronco, which remains one of his favorites. Cowboy Poetry is exactly what is says, poems read aloud, talking about Cowboys, their daily lives and travels and much more. According to Bellert’s promotional flyer, “Cowboy Poetry is pastoral, both
www.wttrgv.com humorous and serious. It’s about nature, ranching life, love of family and friends... and a possible lie or two thrown in for good measure.” Bellert is also very active in the RGV entertainment scene. He has been organizing shows, producing entertainment lineups and emceeing for festivals, shows and Winter Texan parks for more than a decade. In 2011 he was named Best Show Personality by Families Advocating Moral Entertainment (FAME) after a three-year run as Best Western Humorist by the same group. He was inducted into America’s Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame in 2011. He took a break after his wife Betty died seven years ago, just two weeks before their 58th anniversary. He has five children, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, “and that’s as far as it goes right now,” he joked.” “I couldn’t find much initiative after that for a while,” he said. “We were partners in this.” However, to the joy of thousands, he climbed back on the horse (as cowboys would say) and moved forward. He says some of his biggest thrills today are helping people start doing entertainment in the Valley when he’s back up in Minnesota. “I have a love for live country music and, of course, Cowboy Poetry and recitations,” Bellert said. “So when I’m up north and hear someone that might fit down here, I tell them they just have to come down here to South Texas and perform. I’ll try to get them started down here.”

MARCH 9, 2017 RGVLS
From pg. 1 will be a full lineup of entertainment acts and street entertainers to keep people occupied between the livestock judging events and the rodeos. Look for Dock Dogs to make their first time appearance at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show on March 10-18. These dogs will give diving and jumping performances. Dogs will be judged on the length of their jumps from a 40-foot dock into a pool. They will be high jumping to get a bumper that is moved two inches higher each jump. In another event the dogs will be timed to see how fast they can run down the dock, jump in the pool, swim to the end of the pool and retrieve an object held by an extender arm. Look for the Robinson Family Chainsaw Artists to return and make all sorts of objects in a very short period of time with just a chainsaw and a piece of wood. Also returning are the Fables of the West, cowboy comedians who stroll around the fairgrounds sharing stories on the old west. They will be joined by Tumbleweed Crossing, another group that takes people on a zany look at the Old West. Lone Star Action Sports returns with a

WINTER TEXAN TIMES ROSIE
From pg. 1 ble. She did make one friend with whom she is still in contact. After work, many of the girls would play baseball for relaxation. As an athletic young woman who played catcher for her high school varsity team as far back as eighth grade, she naturally was picked to be catcher for the Bomberettes. While in Omaha, she and four other girls lived with a family who had made room to house them, as there were no dormitories. The girls paid rent and ate some of their meals with the family, or they went out to eat together. In the past few years Rosie the Riveter conventions have been held. In 2016 it was held at the George Patton Museum near Palm Springs, California where Gen. Patton trained 300,000 men to fight in Africa. During their convention a memorial plaque was unveiled. It read:

“To all the women who were called on to be a Rosie during World War II, America acknowledges the war would not have been won had it not been for your devotion to our country. With deep appreciation the General George Patton Museum Board of Directors presents this award to all the ‘Rosies’ who helped win the war.” “Many veterans say without our help the war could have been lost,” added Louise. “It was our ability to keep planes and tanks coming to replace those that were shot down or destroyed in battle that made the difference.” “I am very proud of the work I did that contributed to that effort,” states Louise. “We all worked very hard to keep things moving,” she said as she proudly displays her Rosie the Riveter wristband in blue and red signifying she is an authentic “Rosie the Riveter.” The term “Rosie the Riviter” was used at first to depict the women who worked in the factories making planes and tanks

for the war effort. Later, it was extended to honor the women who had flown the planes to England and other locations for the men to use. Still later, it was expanded to include those who planted victory gardens to raise food at home or who replaced a man on a farm so he could fight overseas. In 1944, her childhood sweetheart Clarence Unkrich was granted leave to come home and get married. Louise bought her wedding outfit, a shirt and jacket, with money she earned working at the bomber plant. Clarence had graduated in 1940 and went to college for a while before joining the Navy. The couple married at home in the Swedesburg Lutheran Church on October 13, 1944. They moved to Newport, Rhode Island where Clarence was an officer on the new AKA-28 attack cargo ship, The USS Hydrus.” Married life was interrupted though as he shipped out two months later, in December 1944, and did not return until 1946. lay the smoke screen going into the Battle of Okinawa toward the end of the war. Instead of returning to the bomber plant, Louise returned to Swedesburg where she worked on her father’s and father-in-law’s farms to help keep them running. In March of 1946, Clarence was discharged from the Navy and returned home to Swedesburg to farm. They started with 600 to 700 acres of hogs, corn and soybeans but the farm eventually doubled in size. Louise worked beside Clarence on the farm. They also operated a grain elevator where Louise not only managed the office, she drove the big grain trucks and unloaded grain. Today at 92 years young, Louise can still flex the muscle in her arm she developed while working as a Rosie the Riveter. But she gives credit to the farm work she did in Swedesburg for keeping that muscle as strong as it is.
