Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 FOR EXTRA PAPERS Vol. 30, No. 21 © 2016-2017 www.wttrgv.com Thursday, March 16, 2017 Thanks for coming! As we approach the end of another winter season, it is time to say farewell to many of our Winter Texan Friends who will be leaving soon. Before you go, we want to thank you for choosing the Rio Grande Valley as your winter home. We are always delighted to see so many of you come to the Valley each year to enjoy the warm weather, the friendly people, the modest cost of living and the many, activities and entertainers here to make your stay all the more enjoyable. We enjoy having you here as our neighbors so much that we want to invite more Winter Texans to come down next season. And we’d like to invite you to become a Winter Texan Ambassador. The job description is pretty simple. Just tell your friends back home how much you enjoyed your stay in the Rio Grande Valley and invite them to come down with you next fall – even if it’s for just a week or two. Once they experience how much fun Winter Texans have, they’ll want to come back, year after year. So, pick up some extra copies of the Winter Texan Times to take home with you to share with your friends. And be sure to tell them about the fun activities you enjoy in your park, such as jam sessions and professional entertainers, craft sales and pancake breakfasts, dinners and ice cream socials, movie nights and special park activities. Did I mention dances? Country dances, variety dances, square dances, round dances. You name it and you can find it – if not in your park, then there’s probably another park just down the road that offers just what you like. Depending on the park or resort where you stay, you probably have some great park amenities to enjoy such as a swimming pool, billiards, wood working shops, RC racetracks, and yes, even shuffleboard. We keep hearing from folks that they’ve been to Arizona and Florida, but they love coming to the Rio Grande Valley See FAREWELL pg. 4

Canada Day celebration at Riverside Club By Herb Moering Wearing of the red was in order as Canadians came from all over the Valley for a Canada Day celebration March 7 at the Riverside Club in Mission. But what made the occasion extra special was the fun of marking the 150th anniversary of Canada as a nation this year. Special events like the one here are among many to mark the anniversary all year across Canada, according to Paulette Kraichy, who chaired this year’s event. The actual anniversary date is July 1 in Canada. Working with her was Brother Brian, as he wants to be known, who was emcee for the event dressed in his Canadian outfit. He hosts a radio show in an Ontario town. Decked out in her homemade Royal Canadian Mounted Police outfit, Kraichy hurried to keep the program on schedule, which included an impressive parade of flags, composed of the maple leaf national flag, the 10 provincial and three territorial flags, and an American flag. Rockin’ and Rollin’ in Paradise By Henry Miller Rock ‘n roll is not dead. It’s a common phrase that has been tossed back and forth for the past two decades, with its counter version rock ‘n roll is dead. It’s definitely not dead on any given Thursday at Paradise Park in Pharr. The Paradise rock ‘n roll jam (which also includes big band pieces) is in its baby phase, just started this season and performing now for about five weeks. But the songs are easily recognizable, coming from the 50s, 60s – and maybe even some 70s – performed by Winter Texans with a good ear for music and a great voice for the rock era. “It was pretty good,” said Jerry Davis, originally from Bedford, Iowa, and now lives in Paradise Park. He proclaims to not be the biggest rock fan but had high praises for the singers and the five-person ensemble. “It hasn’t hit its stride here yet, just in the beginning phases. dancing was provided by the Regan James Hired Hand Band, which plays about 300 engagements at parks around the Valley during the winter months. Coordinating Canada Day in her first time, Kraichy related she had been working on the event for nearly a year. She had contacted the various Canadian province government offices to obtain provincial flags and lapel pins, plus sponsors for items to raffle off and others to place in the goodie bags given out to the more than 300 north of the border Winter Texans who attended.

Practically every province and territory was represented, with most from Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and French Quebec. Kraichy and her husband, Don, from Manitoba, stay at Bit O Heaven RV and Mobile Home Park in Donna, where they are both active, she running the park library and he an exercise program. Paulette, who was a firefighter for five years and Don, a postman for 39 with the Canada Post, both help serve the park’s signature soup meals. Besides volunteering, there’s dancing and remote control car racing that the Kraichys enjoy. “We love it (here), and no more snow or mittens! Milt and Helen Parker, from Ontario have been coming to the Valley for 18 years and this was there third time at Canada Day, although with a large contingent of Canadians, they often celebrate in their local park. They carried a flag and helped at the registration table. Wally and Carol MacKenzie, from Ontario, also helped at the program. They came to the Valley 10 years ago, primarily for the many square dancing opportunities. They dance at least twice a week. “We love the Valley, Carol said, “Everything is down here. There are so many things to do here.” Besides dancing, Wally said they bowl, play bocco ball and the French

Although Franklin and Evelyn Pitura, from Manitoba, have been here 13 years at Royal Palms Park in Alamo, this was their first Canada Day, and they looked like they were enjoying the event. They come mainly for the golfing, which was the initial inducement to try the Valley. Franklin finds golfing reasonably priced, quite accessible. “It’s a laidback lifestyle here,” he added. The good times rolled all afternoon with the awarding of door and raffle prizes to go along with the dancing, the food and lots of conversation.

on the rhythm guitar, Jim McAlpine was on the sax and Howard Obedient was on keyboards. “That was a heck of a band up there,” said Davis, admitting that when it comes to rock, he was partial to Elvis Presley. “Top of the line performers all across.” Brian Connally sang “Lyin’ Eyes,” written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey of the Eagles in 1975. Duncan the song became a hit with Bobby Helms in 1957. Ralph Kuster added Neil Diamond’s 1968 smash “Sweet Caroline,” during one stretch of the jam. “This is great,” said Cynthia Monroe, who was visiting a friend in Alamo Country Club and heard about the jam so she put it on her schedule and was happy she attended. “You never know what they mean by ‘rock’ since it has transformed so much

over the years. But this was great.” Davis added that Del Briggs came up with the idea of starting a rock jam. He said at first there was some skepticism but each week – even with the rainy weather – seems to bring out a little larger crowd. On a recent Thursday there were close to 100 people at the jam, which will be held for the next two Thursdays from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

Valley and why Winter Texans enjoy coming here year after year. If you can share 10 or more copies of the paper, give us a call a few days in advance and we will reserve some extra copies for you. If you are leaving the Valley before March 30, just pick up some extra copies of any issue of the Winter Texan Times to show folks back home. And you can always show them our digital editions online at www.wttrgv.com or www.wintertexantimes.com. On behalf of the RV resorts, mobile home parks, local businesses and cities and towns all across the Rio Grande Valley, we want to let you know how much we appreciate our Winter Texans. You are important to us and we hope we have made you feel welcome. You are our friends, and we will miss you when you leave. Have a wonderful summer. Be safe! And we look forward to your return in the fall.

From pg. 1 because the people are more friendly, the cost of living is less expensive (including the great entertainment at bargain prices), and the short distance to neighboring park activities makes it easy to enjoy many different shows and events. So, tell your friends back home about all these great reasons for coming to the Valley. Of course, one of the best parts of being a Winter Texan is making new friends here who share much in common, and becoming part of the community in your favorite RV or mobile home resort. So, let your friends know about all the friends you have made here and how much fun it is to enjoy these activities together with good friends. We hope you will become our Winter Texan Ambassadors and help us spread the good word about the Rio Grande Valley. Take some extra copies of the Winter Texan Times with you to share with your friends up north. Our March 30 edition will be a special “Take Home Edition” filled with lots of information about the Rio Grande

Robert Soto, a Lipan Apache and Chairman of the South Texas Indian Dancers Association, a group of about 45 dancers and 25 non-dancers from 16 different tribal groups, helps organize the annual Indian Pow Wow, which was held March 11 in McAllen. During this year’s pow wow, Soto shared a remarkable story

Robert Soto, Lipan Apache

about events that affected the fate of the Plains Indians in Texas in the late 1800s. History books describe the setting for the events Soto described. According to “The Handbook of Texas Online,” in May 1871, William Tecumseh Sherman, Commanding General of the U.S. Army, came to Texas conducting an investigation of complaints of Indian raids from the Fort Sill Reservation. Sherman and a small contingent of 17 soldiers, two aides and the Inspector General of the Army, left San Antonio on May 2 headed north, visiting several forts. After reaching Fort Richardson on May 17, Sherman had seen no Indians and believed the reports of Indian trouble to be greatly exaggerated. However, on May 15, a war party of over 100 Indians from the Fort Sill Reservation entered Texas, looking to attack. The See INDIAN pg. 7

From pg. 6 party was comprised of Kiowas, Comanches, Arapahos, Apaches and Cheyennes. On May 16, the Indians had arrived at Flint Creek, just 20 miles west of Fort Richardson, when Gen. Sherman’s small contingent passed by their hiding place. The war party chose not to attack the soldiers and instead, two days later, attacked a wagon train, killing seven men, while only three escaped alive. Although the Indians then returned to the reservation, one of the men who survived their attack, Thomas Brazeal, made it to Fort Sill and reported the attack to Sherman and the post commander. The incident changed Sherman’s opinion and his policy regarding the Indians.

www.wttrgv.com

He immediately ordered three companies from the 4th Cavalry to pursue the Indians, and he subsequently ordered soldiers to pursue all Indians found off the reservations, according to the “Handbook of Texas Online.” Soto explained what happened next. Following the attack on the wagon train, fear of Indians spread rampantly and Gen. Sherman gave orders to Colonel Ranald MacKenzie, to take a portion of the 4th Cavalry and clear the Indians out of Texas. Fear was rampant all over Texas and for many, “the only good Indian was a dead Indian.” Col. MacKenzie traveled all over Texas killing Indians, Soto said. This included many of the Lipan Apache who lived in south and west Texas.

MARCH 16, 2017 07 www.wttrgv.com

While the Kickapoo Indians of Mexico were traditionally enemies of the Lipan Apache, they were under siege from the Mexican soldiers who were offering 100 pesos for the scalp of an Indian man, 75 pesos for the scalp of an Indian woman, and 50 pesos for the scalp of an Indian child. Soto said, the Kickapoos had a secret retreat in the mountains of Mexico and invited the Lipan Apache to join them there to be safe from the American soldiers. However, the Texas Rangers and 4th Cavalry under Mackenzie made an illegal trip across the border. Mexican soldiers accompanied them as they sought and found the secret retreat and began slaughtering the Indians. At one point a 10-yearold Indian boy was captured by soldiers

and brought for slaughter. Because of his youth, the soldiers were reluctant to kill him. A Mexican soldier, Fernando De Leon, said he would like to adopt him although he was encouraged by his peers to shoot him and collect the reward for his scalp, Soto related. The boy lived on De Leon’s ranch until he was 14 when he ran away. He eventually married an Apache woman and had 14 children. One of those children, a girl, married and had nine children. One of those daughters had another nine children including the mother of Robert Soto. Soto asked the audience to think about what would have happened to the Lipan Apache of South Texas had it not been for the kindness of that one Mexican soldier.

Back By Request…

Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “Amy and Frank did an outstanding job on my right leg and lower back, I feel so good that I can now put on my socks on my own and enjoy my time with my family.” - Reyes Garcia “Lately I am not paying a cleaning lady because I can do it myself!”- Roberta Barriere II “Now I can sleep the night through without pain.”- Marilyn Eisenmenger Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life. I’ve seen it many times. • It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… • It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… • It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… • It can ruin your travel plans… • And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems…and life problems. Here at Pure Physical Therapy, the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 100’s of people from right here in McAllen, and the rest of Hidalgo County who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica. It’s our SPECIALTY. By request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Pure Physical Therapy in McAllen Saturday, March 25, 2017 from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. Register now at: Link: purept.ptworkshops.com/mcallen/workshop?source=wtt If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: • The Single Biggest #1 Mistake back pain and sciatica sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… • The 3 Most Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica… • A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) • How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg… • What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. How Do I Register for the Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop? Call our office to register at (956) 994-8880. When you register, we will mail you The Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. We only have 40 seats available for the event…and this will be promoted on Face Book and mailed out to the general public. So if you would like to attend, be sure to register now…Call (956) 994-8880. How Much Is It to Attend? The event is FREE. Please call to register as spots fill fast As a Special Bonus…the first 10 people to call and register for the event will receive a $10.00 gift card. All 40 attendees for the Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop will receive a Special Report: “The Top 10 Burning Questions for Sciatica”.

Looking forward to seeing you there, Pure Physical Therapy PS – The first 10 People to call and register at (956)994-8880 will receive a $10 gift card. PPS – This event is limited to the first 40 people to register. When you register, you can bring a guest at no additional cost (we do this because many people request to bring their spouse or other family member).

SHARYLAND DENTAL CARE

I am so appreciative and grateful to have a Dentist who focuses on me, the patient when I visit Sharyland Dental and Dr. Young. The staff is always so friendly, informative and strive to make sure my time with them is a comfortable and pleasant experience. Any time I have a dental emergency, Dr. Brann and the staff at Sharyland Dental make every effort to see me as soon as possible. I know that I will receive the best care, knowledge and services when in their hands. Yes, dental work in Mexico is less expensive but I have experienced the downside to low cost dental work. Trying to find a cheaper dentist ultimately cost me a lot more money to repair and a lot more pain to endure. So I make sure to refer Sharyland Dental to all my friends and family because I know they too will be met with the most friendly and professional care that I have. UTRGV Winter Texan Survey results Every other year, the Business and Tourism Research Center of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, led by Penny M. Simpson DBA, director, conducts a study of the Winter Texan market in the Valley. Following are highlights of the most recent survey, which was based on the 2015-2016 winter season. The average person who participated in the survey was 72.3 years old, married (83.5%), white (98.3%), retired more than one year (88.9%), and had some college or a bachelor’s, graduate or professional degree (37%). The average household income was about $65,000, which is a 10.2% increase since 2014 and 29.8% increase since 2006. An estimated 48.4% of 2016 Winter Texans had an income of $60,000 or more. More Winter Texans (12%), age 65 or more, have an income of $100,000 or greater than the general U.S. population (11%). Although most Winter Texans come from the Midwest states, Canadians accounted for 17.6% of the Winter Texan population. Most of the Canadians are from Ontario (41.6%), followed by Manitoba (29.2%), Quebec (9.9%) and Saskatchewan (6.8%).

The states with the most Winter Texans were Minnesota leading with 14.3% followed by Iowa with 11.5%, Missouri 7.8%, Illinois 7.6%, Michigan and Wisconsin both with 7.2%, and Nebraska with 1.6%. According to the survey, Winter Texans 65 years of age and older are more educated and have a higher household income than their counterparts in the U.S. population. Comparing age, there was a smaller percentage of Winter Texans in ages 65 to 69 age bracket and more in the 70 to 74 bracket than the U.S. population in general. The average Winter Texan has come to the Valley 11.7 years, and stays an average of 133 days. Approximately 89.9% own a Valley residence. About 95.3% of Winter Texans indicate they will return next year. Why come to the RGV? Local businessmen and chamber of commerce leaders always want to know why Winter Texans come to the RGV. What attracts them? The warm winter climate tops the list See SURVEY pg. 23

From traditional Italian dishes – like lasagna, ravioli, or spaghetti with meatballs – to grilled lamb chops, Romano’s Macaroni Grill offers a wide variety of meals to enjoy. Served with a loaf of heavenly hot bread, a delicious meal at Macaroni Grill is a perfect way to enjoy a lunch break or a leisurely dinner. Their mouth-watering hot bread is baked with rosemary for that authentic Italian flavor and served with olive oil and spices, which some refer to as “Italian butter.” At Macaroni Grill you can enjoy a full-course meal, starting with your choice of antipasti appetizers, plus soups, salads, then a variety of entrees, including beef, chicken, pork, lamb,

pasta or pizza selections. Start with an appetizer such as the fried macaroni sticks consisting of a ball of macaroni, deep-fried and served with an asiago cheese sauce. Their Antipasti menu also includes, Spicy Ricotta Meatballs, Bruschetta, Baked Prosciutto & Mozzarella, Calamari Fritti, Goat Cheese Peppadew Peppers, Crispy Fresh Mozzarella, Fried Artichokes, Portobello Fries and Loaded Fries with prosciutto, Parmesan, mozzarella cheese sauce, gorgonzola and Calabrian peppers. For an entrée try a pasta such as the Shrimp Portofino, one of the favorites among patrons. The shrimp are served over a bed of angel hair pasta

with a butter sauce that is delicious. The Chicken Marsela is juicy and tender, cooked with mushrooms and garlic and served over a bed of pasta. For those avoiding pasta, try the other entrees such as grilled lamb chops served with a side of vegetables. Macaroni Grill offers traditional salads such as Caprese, Caesar, Parmesan-Crusted Chicken, Chicken Florentine, Bibb & Bleu and Steak & Greens. Or opt for one of their family-style vegetables such as the butternut squash with fig sauce, walnuts and feta cheese. “It tastes like Thanksgiving,” said the waitress. The servings are large enough for the entire family to sample. And when it comes to dessert, the Italians are wonderful. Try the Italian tiramisu or a chocolate cake. Delicious. WINTER TEXAN TIMES SURVEY

From pg. 16

at 91.8%. The friendliness of the people was second at 68.6%, and the social activities offered ranked third with 55.9%. About 52.2% indicated they came for a winter vacation. The favorite things Winter Texans like to do while in the Valley are visit flea markets, attend festivals, attend music concerts or jam sessions and go to the beach. Economic Impact Winter Texans have a major economic impact on the Rio Grande Valley. They spend an average of $10,775 on routine monthly purchases and $4,088 on major one-time purchases. This amounts to an average of $14,863 per household. Multiplied by 51,000 Winter Texan households the annual impact is about $760 million. Winter Texans also make a significant impact on the Mexican side of the border. Approximately 86.6% of Winter Texans visit Mexico with an average of 5.2 visits. They spend an estimated $80 to $187 per trip. Multiplied by 51,000 households, the impact is about $30.6 million. One finding was that there were fewer Winter Texans under the age of 65, as many seem to be retiring later, which is consistent with the national trend. Likewise, there was evidence some of the younger Winter Texans are staying home or trying new places instead of returning to the Valley. There were also new older Winter Texans coming to the Valley. The percentage of older Winter Texans staying healthy and returning to the Valley is also increasing. While most Winter Texans are married, there is an increasing number of Winter Texans who are either widowed or single. This statistic coincides with the idea that Winter Texans are getting older as they may have started out as a couple but have continued to come after losing a mate. Approximately 11.7% of all households were a single person household while 86.5% were two-person households. While the average stay is 133 days, some stay as long as 150 days (16.5%). About 16% stay 120 days and 12.1% stay 180 days. Most stay from three to six months. The average number of years coming to winter in the Valley is 11.7 years, a slight increase over past years. Only 3% indicated it was their first time in the Valley. Winter Texans live in a variety of residences. Approximately 63.6% own a mobile home while 29.2% own an RV. Another 6% own a house, while 1.1% own an apartment or condo. Another 0.5% rent a hotel or motel while 2.8% rent an apartment or condo and 0.9% rent an RV. And 0.1% stay with family or friends. The number of Winter Texans choosing to own their own home has risen from 0.5% in 2006 to 6% in 2016. The number of people who own mobile homes has risen

from 35.5% in 2006 to 53.6% in 2016. Why Visit the Valley? The top three reasons Winter Texans gave for choosing the Rio Grande Valley were climate (91.6%), friendly people (68.6%), and social activities (56.9%). Other popular choices included winter vacations (52.2%), the cost of living (45.9%), and the allure of Mexico (38.6%). Other reasons for coming to the Valley included visiting friends and family (25.7%), shopping (13.8%), nature activities, (18.9%), medical reasons (9.1%) and business (1.5%). Activities favored by Winter Texans included music and jams, flea markets, exercising, dancing, golf and volunteering. Others include bicycling, festivals, crafts, sight-seeing in Mexico, and the beach. Wildlife and nature refuges, historical sights, libraries, museums, fishing, travel tours, softball and the zoo were also enjoyed by Winter Texans. In 2016 monthly housing costs averaged $793 while the amount spent on groceries was $338. Medical expenses averaged $274, while eating out was $220 monthly. Transportation costs were $138 while utilities were $160. Entertainment averaged $107, while money spent on clothes averaged $110. Money spent on major purchases averaged $1164 on mobile homes, $644 on automobiles, $331 on medical, $240 on property, $150 on appliances, $65 on electronics, $106 on furniture, $744 on RV, $70 on travel tours and $244 on other major costs. By looking at the figures above, it is obvious the Winter Texans have a tremendous financial impact on the economy of the Rio Grande Valley. The Rio Grande Valley welcomes its Winter Texans with open arms and hopes they will continue to consider the Valley their second home for many years to come.

MOSTH speaker to present Bandit Wars era The Museum of South Texas History will present “Bandits by the Border: The Mexican Revolution in the Rio Grande Valley” on Sunday, Mar. 19, at 2 p.m. as part of its Sunday Speaker Series. The presentation will cover historical conditions in the Rio Grande Valley that led to the “Bandit Wars,” a term historically used to define the era, of the 1910s. The introduction of the railroad in South Texas opened the Rio Grande Valley up for agricultural development, resulting in an influx of Anglo-American settlement. At the same time, the outbreak of revolutionary violence in Mexico led to a massing refuge effort as thousands of Mexican families fled across the river for safety. These two populations drastically altered the social make-up of South Texas

and threw the delicate cultural balance out of equilibrium. Gabriel Ozuna, a Valley native and Yale University graduate, will explain how the social tension was exploited by Los Sediciosos, a small band of revolutionary terrorists sponsored by the Mexican government, to try and spark a race war. The “Bandit Wars” would mark a bloody and shameful era in the history if the Rio Grande Valley as terrorism gave way to retaliatory violence and near-complete dissolution of social cohesion between Anglos and Mexican-Americans. The museum is open on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults and $6 for seniors. It is located caddy-corner to the Hidalgo County Courthouse parking on Closner Blvd. in Edinburg.
