Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 FOR EXTRA PAPERS Vol. 30, No. 22 © 2016-2017 www.wttrgv.com Thursday, March 23, 2017 We Had Great Time! It has been a busy winter season for our staff here at the Winter Texan Times. Trying to keep up with all the many Winter Texan activities going on throughout the Rio Grande Valley keeps us on our toes. But we always have fun attending the activities and events held for our Winter Texan friends who come to the Valley each year. We’ve enjoyed seeing you and visiting with you at so many different events, from the awesome RC car races at Alamo Palms MH Resort and the wood carving at Ranchero Village to the rock ‘n roll jam at Paradise Resort Estates and many other activities held every day in the RV parks and resorts. Last weekend, we saw many of you attending the Texas Independence Day celebration in San Benito and the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show in Mercedes. Canada Day at the Riverside Club in Mission was a big hit again this year with hundreds of Canadians enjoying the celebration. And then there was the friendly USA vs Canada Senior Softball game held earlier this month. We hope you had as much fun as we did at the Mega Winter Texan Fiesta hosted by the Mission Chamber of Commerce, which the Winter Texan Times helps sponsor as a big “Thank you Winter Texans” appreciation event featuring a full afternoon of live entertainment provided by some of the RGV’s top entertainers. This year’s entertainers included Terry Smith, Richard Lynch, Bill Chrastil, Johnny Ray Gomez, Mama’s Wranglers, Regan James and, of course, Rich Bellert, our favorite cowboy poet and emcee. While thousands of you attended the Winter Texan Fiesta in Mission and other Winter Texan appreciation events hosted by many of the cities throughout the RGV, many more came out to enjoy BorderFest in Hidalgo and the McAllen Travel & Health & Wellness Expo. See GREAT TIME pg. 4

Texas Independence celebrated in San Benito By Herb Moering History buffs on the field and in the bleachers enjoyed the re-enactment of Texas’ fight for independence during the day-long 10th annual celebration in San Benito on Saturday, March 18. About 300 spectators, the majority of them Winter Texans, watched three different battles—that of Gonzales, the Alamo and San Jacinto—take place on the field at the Cameron County Fairgrounds. Chuck and Connie Hall, from Ohio, who are staying at Trophy Gardens in Alamo, had to come twice to finally see the re-enactment. The couple, who are in their second year in the Rio Grande Valley, had come a week earlier only to find it had been cancelled due to heavy rain just prior to the event. “We had a nice ride last week,” Connie said, “but we came back anyway.” They were making a full day of it in addition to hitting the market days of vendors that was a part of the celebration. Canyon Lake Winter Texans help poor in Mexico By Kathy Olivarez Mabel’s Building Mission, a group of men from Canyon Lake RV Resort in Mission, have now completed their 498th home for poor families living in Nuevo Progreso, Mexico since the program started in 1992. According to Bill Kunzman, a total of 20 houses were built this year. The unusually good weather this year allowed the builders to finish by the third week of February. The project began in 1992 but it was a direct off-shoot of the work done by Mabel Clare Proudly, who began trying to help the people of Mexico after the disastrous Hurricane Beulah in 1967. Many people were left homeless and many children were orphaned by the storm. Mabel worked to find homes for these children. See MABEL’S MISSION pg. 21

Winter Texan Activities Association seeks volunteers

By Jim Brunson Winter Texan Times Publisher The Winter Texan Activities Association (WTAA) is a volunteer-run association that has been organizing fun activities for Winter Texans in the Mission area for the past 30 years. But, as it goes with many organizations today, they need a fresh crop of volunteers to help keep the organization running. Sharon Northedge, president of the association, said the board was considering dissolving the association due to a lack of people to help run the events they put on each year. But after meeting with Jim Brunson, publisher of the Winter Texan Times, decided to hold on a little longer and try to muster some help. Events held this year by WTAA included the annual golf tournament at Shary Municipal Golf Course, the Cabaret Dance held at Mission Bell Resort, the craft show held at Bentsen Grove RV Resort, a pool tournament, bowling tournament and shuffleboard tournament. While there is still strong interest and participation in the activities, Northedge was the one who had to shoulder planning most of the events this year. The board needs volunteers to serve as event chairmen so one person does not have to carry all the load. Also needed are active park representatives, whose role is to come to the monthly WTAA meetings, helping plan the events, then going back to their parks to promote those events with their park residents. Park reps should also help coordinate their park’s schedule of events to avoid too many conflicts with the schedule of WTAA activities. The park representatives could be park activity directors, or any member of the park.

There are perks for park reps, such as free tickets to the annual Cabaret Dance, which is growing in demand since the board decided to bring in a band that plays rock ‘n roll along with other music. Participating parks must pay annual dues to the association in the amount of only $20 so their park residents can participate in the various activities. Currently, 25 Mission area RV & MH parks are dues-paying members of the association, and Northedge would like to see that number grow. More participants means more fun for all. This year’s participating parks include Bentsen Grove, Bentsen Palm, Bluebonnet, Canyon Lake, Chimney Park, Circle T, Fiesta Village, Heritage Square, Hidden Valley Ranch, Leisure Valley Ranch, Pleasant Valley Ranch, Restful Valley Ranch, Mission Bell/ Trade Winds, Split Rail, Sunlight MH Park, Tropical Valley Acres, Twin Lakes, W&I Resort, Wagon City South, Wintergreen Estates, Aladdin Villas, Green Gate Grove, Rollin Homes, Valley View Estates, Mobile Garden, and Oleander Acres. If your park is not participating, talk to your park manager or park activity director and see if you can gather enough interest from other park residents to become members of WTAA and help them keep a good thing going. Better yet, let’s build it up with more parks participating and lots of volunteers to help organize and run the events. For more information, call Northedge at 616-901-6131 or email gnorthedge@yahoo.com. Or call Jim Brunson at the Winter Texan Times at 956-580-7800, or email news@wintertexantimes.com.

GREAT TIME

Winter Texan Ambassador this summer. All you have to do is take a few extra copies of the Winter Texan Times to share with your friends back home and invite them to come down for a visit in the fall to check us out. It’s always more fun when we do things with friends, so bring more friends down to South Texas so they can enjoy our tropical South Texas hospitality. Where else can you go and not only enjoy the mild winter weather, good friends, and very affordable living, but all the activities designed just for Winter Texans? Did I mention the mariachi music and folklórico dancers, bloodless bullfights, Mexican Artisan Markets, dances and shows held right in your own resort or park, golf at bargain prices and great entertainers? And there’s so much more to tell your friends about. We had a great time this season! We hope you did too. For those of you who are heading north soon, we wish you safe travels and a wonderful summer. We look forward to your return in the fall.

From pg. 1 Wasn’t the Valley Star Awards Show great this year? Robert and Billie Ferguson always bring in the area’s top performers to put on an incredible show for one great performance after another, all in one evening. If you missed it this year, make plans to come next year. It’s always held in early February and we’ll be announcing it for you in the Winter Texan Times. There is so much more that happened this season, the Texas Citrus Fiesta, Brownsville’s Charro Days, the RGV Quilt Guild Quilt Show at South Padre Island, the Snowbird Extravaganza, the Golden Age Olympics, wood carving, RC racing, pickleball, petanque, bocce ball, shuffleboard tournaments, and the list goes on. We hope you got a good dose of winter fun this season in the Rio Grande Valley. And we’d like to invite you to become a

TEXAS INDEPENDENCE

From pg. 1 that Mexico wanted returned, the couple talked with Carlos Trevino, from Brownsville, who is in his fifth year as a Texan re-enactor and was using a Kentucky long rifle. Trevino, who is also a civil war re-enactor and part of a Confederate honor guard for funerals, said the aim of the re-enacting is “to educate people.” He told the Halls that “Tejanos, Mexicans born in Texas, fought with the Texans for independence. Together they became known as Texians. Bill Willard, who bought a house in Harlingen, wore a T-shirt purchased from a market vendor emblazoned with the “Battle of Gonzales” and on the back a picture of the disputed cannon barrel with the words: “Come and Get It.” His wife, Betty, who was with him, was born in Mercedes to migrant working parents and later worked for Western Electric (Ma Bell). “There is a lot of history in South Texas,” said Robert Rimaker, playing a Mexican army sergeant and who is a history professor at Texas Southmost College in Brownsville. He came here three years ago from Iowa and found an interest in the battles for Texas independence, the Mexican-American War, the last Civil War engagement and the Texas constitution. He also is an re-enactor on the first Saturday of each month at the Palo Alto

www.wttrgv.com

Battlefield National Park, which is the site of the first engagement on May 8, 1846 in the Mexican-American War. Rimaker, who helped organize the Mexican “soldiers,” made his own authentic grenadier wool uniform, patterned after the ones worn by soldiers from Mexico City. Uniforms take some painstaking research, noting that old churches in Mexico and the Mexican consulates usually have old pictures of soldiers. Another re-enactor and organizer of the event, Ruben Cordova, from Santa Rosa, took a Mexican officer’s role, directing the soldiers from on horseback for the Gonzales battle. He has ancestors who fought with the 33rd Texas Cavalry in the Civil War as Indian scouts. He and his wife, Anabeth, started re-enacting together 11 years ago. She takes a role as his wife and a laundress. They also do Civil War re-enactments together, he as an officer colonel, which includes appearances at the Palo Alto park. Cordova, who spent 22 years in the U.S. Navy as a radioman and saw much of the world, mostly in the Orient and South Pacific, also has portrayed Lipan Apache and renegade Apache at times in re-enactments of the 1870s and 1880s Indian wars in Texas. Cordova, who is a mix of Lipan and Chiricahua Apache, points out that most Indians were driven out of Texas about that time, including his own family ancestors, and didn’t start to return until a decade or so later. His wife’s background is also Lipan along with Scandinavian,

WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com

Spanish, French and Arab, according to DNA, he said. The Lipan Apache tribe also was represented by Anita Anaya, who is a secretary at the University of Texas-RGV. She was demonstrating the ancient way of using corn, grinding the corn into a small, rather hard cone shape, which could be scraped off as a tribe member went along on a journey. She said her grandmother provided food in this way. The re-enactment began with a presentation of the colors and pledge to the American and Texas flags. The invocation was given by Bruce Kidd, of Harlingen, a retired nurse who took on the role of John MacGregor, one of five Scottish adventurers who fought and died at the Alamo. Kidd’s character is named after the Scottish king, Robert the Bruce. He also plays the bagpipes, sometimes dueling with the fiddling Davy Crockett character. For Civil War programs, he plays an adjutant general. The mayor of San Benito, Celeste Sanchez, read a proclamation pertaining to the establishment of Texas as a Republic from Mexico. Jack Ayoub was narrator for the event and provided Information about the replica Alamo mission structure, which flew a flag of two Mexican states at the time of the Feb. 23 to March 6, 1836 battle. He noted the chapel had no dome atop the front wall, which was added about a decade later. Ayoub noted that the Mexican army used muskets, which were of shorter range than the long rifles

used by the Texans. While the spectators watched as General Santa Ana ordered the attack on the Alamo without any quarter given, the fall of it became the rallying cry at the battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836 where Santa Ana was surprised and overwhelmed within 18 minutes by General Sam Houston’s Texans. The result was the unconditional surrender of the Mexican general and a treaty ordering his troops to cross the Rio Grande River and leave the new independent Republic of Texas. The conclusion to the day was an invitation for those in the audience to “sign” a replica of The Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico.

Bruce Kidd, of Harlingen, had a role as a Scottish fighter who helped defend the Alamo back in 1836.

SHARYLAND DENTAL CARE

I am so appreciative and grateful to have a Dentist who focuses on me, the patient when I visit Sharyland Dental and Dr. Young. The staff is always so friendly, informative and strive to make sure my time with them is a comfortable and pleasant experience. Any time I have a dental emergency, Dr. Brann and the staff at Sharyland Dental make every effort to see me as soon as possible. I know that I will receive the best care, knowledge and services when in their hands. Yes, dental work in Mexico is less expensive but I have experienced the downside to low cost dental work. Trying to find a cheaper dentist ultimately cost me a lot more money to repair and a lot more pain to endure. So I make sure to refer Sharyland Dental to all my friends and family because I know they too will be met with the most friendly and professional care that I have. Attention Back Pain and Sciatica Sufferers! Back By Request…

Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “Amy and Frank did an outstanding job on my right leg and lower back, I feel so good that I can now put on my socks on my own and enjoy my time with my family.” - Reyes Garcia “Lately I am not paying a cleaning lady because I can do it myself!”- Roberta Barriere II “Now I can sleep the night through without pain.”- Marilyn Eisenmenger Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life. I’ve seen it many times. • It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… • It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… • It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… • It can ruin your travel plans… • And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems…and life problems. Here at Pure Physical Therapy, the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 100’s of people from right here in McAllen, and the rest of Hidalgo County who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica. It’s our SPECIALTY. By request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Pure Physical Therapy in McAllen Saturday, March 25, 2017 from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. Register now at: Link: purept.ptworkshops.com/mcallen/workshop?source=wtt If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: • The Single Biggest #1 Mistake back pain and sciatica sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… • The 3 Most Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica… • A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) • How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg… • What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. How Do I Register for the Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop? Call our office to register at (956) 994-8880. When you register, we will mail you The Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. We only have 40 seats available for the event…and this will be promoted on Face Book and mailed out to the general public. So if you would like to attend, be sure to register now…Call (956) 994-8880. How Much Is It to Attend? The event is FREE. Please call to register as spots fill fast As a Special Bonus…the first 10 people to call and register for the event will receive a $10.00 gift card. All 40 attendees for the Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop will receive a Special Report: “The Top 10 Burning Questions for Sciatica”.

Looking forward to seeing you there, Pure Physical Therapy PS – The first 10 People to call and register at (956)994-8880 will receive a $10 gift card. PPS – This event is limited to the first 40 people to register. Coming directly from Italy, Emidio and Lisetta Milano introduced pizza to the Valley over 60 years ago. It was such a hit that local stores were soon asking the Milano’s to make pizzas they could freeze and sell to their customers. Soon the customers were asking the family to open a pizza place. In 1955, they opened their first restaurant on their front porch with “four tables and ten broken chairs.” In 1960, son Lino returned to Italy and married Giovanna Corrente, who eventually became known as “Mama Milano.” They grew the business into the well-known restaurant it is today. Now Giovanna and her three children own it. Today, the restaurant features a variety of Italian foods, many of which are made with ingredients imported from Italy. When the Winter Texan Times visited recently, we started our meal with an order of bruschetta. It was delicious! The olive oil had a light flavor and the bread was homemade, as is all the bread served at Milano’s. The bread was followed by garden fresh vegetable salads with Italian and raspberry dressings made in the restaurant. Then we were served two entrees, which Norma Reyes and I chose to

share. The first was Pollo Marsala, a pan-seared breaded chicken breast topped with sautéed mushrooms, grape tomatoes, and prosciutto in a Marsala wine sauce. The second entrée was Pasta Casino with a Gorgonzola cream sauce with mushrooms, onions, peperoncini peppers and diced tomatoes with slices of baked chicken breast on top. It sat on a bed of bowtie pasta. Both were excellent. We both liked the taste of the Pollo Marsala best. But the spicy sauce of the Chicken Casino was excellent as well and would be favored by those looking for something slightly spicy. We ended our meal with Angela’s cheesecake, which is not your average cheesecake. It had a pecan crust and coconut pudding filling that was covered with a layer of cheesecake and served with cherry sauce. Excellent! Besides the entrees we tried, Milano’s has a line of those famous pizzas

Social Security announces online ‘Wildcatters and Revolutionaries’ replacement Social Security cards at MOSTH

The Social Security Administration introduced the expansion of online services for residents of Texas available through its my Social Security portal at www. socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. Nancy A. Berryhill, Acting Commissioner of Social Security, announced that residents of Texas can use the portal for many replacement Social Security number (SSN) card requests. This will allow people to replace their SSN card from the comfort of their home or office, without the need to travel to a Social Security office. “I’m pleased to offer the residents of Texas the added convenience of replacing a Social Security card through the my Social Security portal,” Acting Commissioner Berryhill said. “We will continue to work on innovative initiatives to provide people with safe, secure and convenient options for doing business with us online or in person.” The agency is conducting a gradual roll out of this service; Texas is one of the states, plus the District of Columbia, where this option is available. Throughout 2017, the agency will continue to expand the service option to other states. This service will mean shorter wait times for the public in the more than 1,200 Social Security offices across the country and

allows staff more time to work with customers who have extensive service needs. U.S. citizens age 18 or older and who are residents of Texas can request a replacement SSN card online by creating a my Social Security account. In addition, they must have a U.S. domestic mailing address, not require a change to their record (such as a name change), and have a valid driver’s license, or state identification card in some participating states. my Social Security is a secure online hub for doing business with Social Security, and more than 29 million people have created an account. In addition to Texas residents replacing their SSN card through the portal, current Social Security beneficiaries can manage their account— change an address, adjust direct deposit, obtain a benefit verification letter, or request a replacement SSA-1099. Medicare beneficiaries can request a replacement Medicare card without waiting for a replacement form in the mail. Account holders still in the workforce can verify their earnings history and obtain estimates of future benefits by looking at their Social Security Statement online. For more information about this new online service, visit www.socialsecurity. gov/ssnumber .

The Museum of South Texas History (MOSTH) Happy Hour series is a great way to learn more about South Texas and northeastern Mexico heritage while enjoying a relaxing, sociable environment. On Thursday, March 30, from 6 to 8 p.m., guests can join the MOSTHistory Happy Hour: Wildcatters and Revolutionaries event for an evening of beer tasting, great appetizers and other historically engaging fun activities. During the event, guests can explore the museum’s River Crossroads gallery, which tells the story of the Rio Grande Valley during the 20th century, through a competitive and interactive scavenger hunt. MOSTH staff and other historians will be available to provide information on the roles of independent oilers, known as wildcatters, and the effects that Mexican revolutionaries had on the Rio Grande Valley and its residents. Local costumed interpreters, Los Liberadores, will portray men and women fighters of the Mexican Revolution. Guests can also test their marksmanship at the Revolutionary Firing Range by shooting at empty cans off a board with rubber band guns. MOSTH Happy Hour also partners

with businesses and individuals from the Rio Grande Valley to make these events relevant to the region. This month’s event will include a new partner: The Prelude Songwriters Club from Harlingen. Jose Sanchez, a singer-songwriter residing at South Padre Island, is part of the organization and will entertain the crowd with music of the 20th century and original compositions. The beer tasting selection is from Guns and Oil Brewery out of Austin, Texas, which specializes in brews resembling “traditionally brewed pre-prohibition style full-bodied American lagers.” Wine will also be provided for those who wish to skip the beer tasting. Guests who aren’t hungry enough for a full dinner can enjoy local food truck and caterers Q’in It Up BBQ. The master chefs of Q’in It Up BBQ will provide great food that has been prepared and cooked at several cook offs in Texas including the National BBQ Cook-Off in Meridian, Texas. MOSTH Happy Hour is a new and fun way to experience the Museum of South Texas History. Make reservations by calling 956-383-6911.

This year’s Pharr Hub Phestival will be held Saturday, March 25 at 118 S. Cage Blvd. Gates open at 2 p.m. and close at 9 p.m. According to Gary Rodriguez, of Pharr EDC, one of the biggest attractions is the Nature Day exhibition. The Valley’s crown jewel nature sites will be in charge of this show including Valley Nature Center, Santa Anna National Wildlife Refuge, the World Birding Center of Edinburg and Texas Forestry. Among the organizations to be present is the Gladys Porter Zoo bringing its infamous “Phantom” who is eight feet and yellow! Check it out and see what it is. turing a camel, guinea pigs and other wild animals. Meet spike the gigantic tortoise. Find out facts about dinosaurs from Dinosaur George. WINTER TEXAN TIMES MABEL’S MISSION

From pg. 1 In 1992 there were still many families who did not have homes or had very poor quality homes, so a group of men at Canyon Lake RV Resort decided to do something about it. They started raising money to build these small homes that were greatly needed. The homes are only 12 feet by 16 feet with two windows and a door but they are much better than what the family had before. The people who receive them are grateful for them and there is a waiting list to get one. Kunzman said that about 15 to 20 men living at Canyon Lake Resort in the winter work on the houses. Construction begins with a Mexican national, who pours the concrete slabs in advance for them so it is dry and ready to build on when the walls are ready. It takes about two weeks for the slab to be ready for construction.

The wife of the man who builds the slabs works to determine who qualifies for a home. Do they have a job in Mexico? Do they own the property where the home is being built? She checks to see no one is scamming the group to have a house to rent to someone else. The men build much of the house there in the park by constructing the walls and installing the windows and door. While the homes are not very large, many of the people who receive these homes are living in shacks that may not be completely closed in or well enough constructed to keep the weather out when it rains or gets cold. Some live in ramshackle shelters built of giant packing crates or large heavy-duty cardboard boxes. Bill’s wife, Phyllis, works with him to coordinate the furnishings for the homes. A group of quilters at Canyon Lake RV Resort makes quilts for each member of

MARCH 23, 2017 21 www.wttrgv.com

the family. The ladies meet each Tuesday to make the quilts, which are made from large scraps of material that is often donated to the project. Residents also organize a clothing drive that provides a box of clothing for each member of the family including layettes for babies. The men build a table for each home and other furnishings are also provided. If Phyllis is able to find a hide-a-bed, a recliner, chairs or a mattress from someone who is giving furniture away and replacing it with new furniture, the old furniture is donated to help furnish these homes. Winter Texan in other parks in the area who have heard about the project help with these donations. And each family is presented with a Spanish Bible and a box of food. Money to fund these homes is raised by churches up north or given by individ-

uals who want to help improve the life of a family in Mexico. Building is restricted to those who live in Canyon Lake unless someone outside the park donates the money for a home. Due to rises in the costs of construction materials, the houses now cost $1400 to build, a considerable increase in cost from when they first started. That is one reason they limit themselves to 20 per year. Whenever possible the builders look for old windows from homes that are being torn down or have their windows replaced. If they are in reasonable condition, they can use them in their construction projects. Mabel’s Building Mission is truly a mission that has helped improve the lives of many people living in Mexico who are not as fortunate as the people who live on this side of the border.
