Thank You Winter Texans

As we come to the close of another winter season – our 30th season of publishing the Winter Texan Times – we want to tell you how much we enjoy having you visit us each year. It’s uplifting to see your zest for life and all the fun times you have together in the mobile home parks and RV resorts all across the Rio Grande Valley. We’ve seen you competing in RC (remote control) car races as more and more resorts are building racetracks. We’ve seen how much you enjoy your hobbies, whether it’s woodworking, quilting, crafts or music. On that note, we see the jam sessions seem to becoming more and more popular, being hosted by many of the parks. Rock ‘n roll jams are beginning to gain popularity, but a lot of folks enjoy the country music jams and the variety jams. Music is such a great way to relax and enjoy life, whether you’re a performer – amateur or professional – or just one who enjoys listening. The jams wouldn’t be half the fun without an audience to perform for. I also want to extend a special thank you to all the Winter Texans who perform so much community service while you are here in the Valley. We are in frequent contact with many organizations such as the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley, Children’s Haven International and the local schools and libraries where you donate your time and resources. These organizations struggle a bit when you leave and your generosity and caring spirit of service are greatly appreciated. I am simply amazed by what Winter Texans can accomplish. A good example of this is Mabel’s Building Mission formed by Winter Texans at Canyon Lake RV Resort. This incredible group built 20 homes for poor families in Mexico this year alone. And they do it every year! Incredible! You folks are simply good people. You bring such good things to the Valley and See THANK YOU pg. 34

Thousands enjoy Nuevo Progreso Tourist Appreciation Day

By Herb Moering Smiles, laughter and some final souvenir gathering were apparent throughout the Winter Tourist Appreciation Day March 21 in Nuevo Progreso, Mexico. With sunny, balmy weather, organizers were thinking the 41st annual event might have drawn as many as 50,000 Winter Texans from across the border, which was also marked by a parade and abrazo (hug) ceremony at the center of the international bridge by officials from both sides of the border. The ceremony was intended to call attention to the bilateral international interests that exist between the border cities. The visitors packed blocked-off Main Street, with most receiving trinkets and samples of food and drink from merchants. Many of the Winter Texans sported straw hats with Pancho’s store name on them, like Ronda Moffatt, of Iowa, and her brother, Garen Rains and his See APPRECIATION pg. 23

Retired navy man Albert Murray got to have his picture taken with two of the Progreso entertainers. He and his wife, Wanda, came from Green Acres Park in Donna.

Wintertime is the perfect time for golf in the RGV

Golf is a year-round sport in the Rio Grande Valley – and Winter Texans are finding plenty of time to enjoy the links. With an average high temperature of 79, 71, 70 and 74 in November, December, January and February, Winter Texans can choose from nearly 20 courses in Hidalgo and Cameron counties. As an example, the same month’s average high temperatures in Ames, Iowa are 45, 31, 27 and 34. The record lows for Ames, just so you can see where the temperatures can potentially go, are -7, -24, -26 and -28 for those months. The Rio Grande Valley’s courses range from nine holes to 27 holes and there are a variety of layouts. For a bigger challenge, Winter Texans may choose a course like Los Lagos, with its numerous moguls, doglegs and tilted fairways that seem to lean toward all of the water hazards. Plus, there’s always the South Texas wind, which is prevalent on this Edinburg pub-

lic course. Treasure Hills in Harlingen is under new ownership. The course offers a mix of challenging and not as challenging holes. Elevations change throughout the course and the challenge level will vary, based on which tees you choose for play. Shary Municipal Golf Course is a haven for Winter Texans and the No. 1 tourist attraction for the city during the winter months. The course provides 27 holes as well as a variety of holes where you can challenge yourself by picking those “big boy” clubs out of the golf bag. The course, however, plays strategically and keeping the ball up the wide and friendly fairways is the ultimate choice. But don’t be fooled. While driving by the course it may look wide open and simple to play, it has enough holes where you need to hit a “golf shot” instead of just gripping and ripping it. See WINTERTIME pg. 22

Wilder RV Resorts www.wttrgv.com

MARCH 30, 2017

Wilder RV Resorts have been a leader in Winter Texan resorts in the Rio Grande Valley for decades. They have a large number of amenities in the resorts along with some of the best activities around at some of the best pricing in the Valley. Wilder RV Resorts has a location in Harlingen (Park Place Estates), 3 locations in Alamo (Alamo Rose, Trophy Gardens, Winter Ranch), 3 locations in Pharr (Texas Trails, Tip O’ Texas, Tropic Star), and a location in Mission (Blue Bonnet). Take a look at them on the web sites at http:// www.rvresorts.com/texas.html. We believe you will find a place that is just right for your interests and enjoyment. The resorts have large pet-friendly areas and pet walking areas (leash required). Many have a fenced dog park where your dogs can run and enjoy some time outside with you. Some of the friendliest and most welcoming people stay at the Resorts so you would always feel welcome and not feel alone. New ideas are always being explored and adopted when they fit the residents in the Resorts. For example – Alamo Rose introduced a pilot program during the 2016/2017 season involving radio con-

trolled cars. Residents got together and have set up a track to race each other and it has really gone over well. The program is being explored to be expanded into the other resorts and then possibly have contests between the Resorts to see who has the best cars and drivers. Bus trips are a mainstay in the resorts with resorts sharing the buses. Trips are scheduled and the bus ride is free (tips for the driver if you like). The trips are scheduled through the Activity Office with suggestions always welcomed. There are activity departments at all resorts with activity directors who schedule bands for dances, entertainment, activities for everyone and dinners for special occasions. As a resident you too can join in the fun that is planned for everyone. Relax at the pools, enjoy a game of shuffleboard, enjoy working in the woodshop at those resorts that have this facility. Play cards with other residents as well as play some pool or billiards with the new friends you will meet here. At Wilder RV Resorts, regular maintenance of our facilities is important to us and certainly to our residents. We have recently undertaken steps to enhance our

RVer’s TIRED

maintenance program in Texas. The Texas Division manager now lives in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas year-round so he can keep a close eye on each of our resorts in the area. We are working hard everyday to ensure the Wilder RV Resorts are not only well-maintained, but are also a great, fun place for everyone to enjoy. So, if you are looking for a place that you can call home and relax during the cold winter months – or even to stay year round as more and more folks are doing – then give the Wilder RV Resorts a look; I think you will be pleasantly surprised by what you find. Come stay in your RV or bring in a park model or mobile home and enjoy some of our “New Resident” specials. We hope to see you soon. The Valley is quickly becoming the premier place to visit and Wilder RV Resorts is the premier place to stay. PAID ADVERTISEMENT

Ranchero Village and Rio Valley Estates A splash of sun on the tropical palm trees swaying in the breeze, melodious strains of a song well sung, and cheers of victory in a competitive pickleball match: those are the sights and sounds that capture the essence of life in Ranchero Village and Rio Valley Estates. Ranchero Village is tucked away from the main streets and heavy traffic for a quiet setting featuring wide, tree-lined streets and large concrete pads to accommodate your mobile home or RV. Rio Valley Estates, Ranchero’s sister park, is located near the heart of Weslaco’s thriving business community, giving Winter Texans easy access to shopping, dining and entertainment. Both immaculately maintained and landscaped parks offer a host of amenities designed to make your home-away-fromhome enjoyable and comfortable. Both sister parks offer a variety of activities taking advantage of the swimming pools and spas, shuffleboard courts, and recreational halls at each park. Ranchero also has a woodworking shop, craft room, billiards, ceramics shop, pickleball court and free cable TV. These are active communities with a

full schedule of activities for the residents to enjoy, including dances, jam sessions, bingo, billiards, horse shoes, arts & crafts, dinners, tours, a variety of card games and Ladies Day Out (while the men enjoy a day at the golf course), and some very good live entertainment. Resident Doug Cowling said people who enjoy shuffleboard should come to Ranchero Village because, “We have the best courts in the Valley!” Of course, the residents love to eat. From fresh cinnamon rolls to biscuits and gravy or pancakes, breakfasts are held several days a week, and they often have hamburger cookouts or pot luck dinners for all to enjoy. Ranchero Village and Rio Valley Estates are centrally located in the mid-Valley and are only 15 minutes from the outlet mall in Mercedes for some great shopping. It is 20 minutes to Harlingen and 25 minutes to McAllen for still more shopping and dining possibilities. For medical emergencies, Knapp Medical Center is only five minutes away and Harlingen and McAllen are the epicenters for a wide array of medical specialists and several hospitals. Paul Flannery, a 12-year-resident, said

WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com

the thing that makes Ranchero Village so special is that it is privately owned. “If we have a problem with something in the park, the owners are willing to work with us. That is not true in the larger corporately owned parks.” Virgil Kappes, from northern Minnesota, says he has been coming to Ranchero Village for 29 years. He loves the friendly people who are like a second family, the recreational activities and the weather. While he was enjoying a warm sunny day, it was six degrees back home. Jim Lindquist is formerly from Minnesota but decided he liked it at Ranchero Village so much he made it his permanent home and refers to himself as a “Summer Minnesotan” when he goes back to visit family.

There are a limited number of lots and mobile homes available, so don’t miss out on all the fun! Call Ranchero Village at 956-968-6223 or Rio Valley Estates at 956-968-2708 to make a reservation. For more information, visit their websites at www.rancherovillageTx.com or www.riovalleyestates.com.

SHARYLAND DENTAL CARE

I am so appreciative and grateful to have a Dentist who focuses on me, the patient when I visit Sharyland Dental and Dr. Young. The staff is always so friendly, informative and strive to make sure my time with them is a comfortable and pleasant experience. Any time I have a dental emergency, Dr. Brann and the staff at Sharyland Dental make every effort to see me as soon as possible. I know that I will receive the best care, knowledge and services when in their hands. Yes, dental work in Mexico is less expensive but I have experienced the downside to low cost dental work. Trying to find a cheaper dentist ultimately cost me a lot more money to repair and a lot more pain to endure. So I make sure to refer Sharyland Dental to all my friends and family because I know they too will be met with the most friendly and professional care that I have. Welcome to Bit-O-Heaven RV and Mobile Home Park

Bit-O-Heaven RV and Mobile Home Park, situated at the heart of the Rio Grande Valley of deep South Texas, is a favorite destination for Winter Texans because of the friendly atmosphere, the great amenities and a wide range of activities residents can choose to participate in. There are other reasons to move into Bit-OHeaven, though, according to activities director Susan Thomas. “The weather is just beautiful,” said Thomas, a New Hampshire native. “I’m past the point of shoveling snow and now that the kids are older and have moved on, there’s no more slave labor for me to send out to do the shoveling. Why would I want to be there when I can be here?” Petanque, shuffleboard, rolle bolle and basketball are just a hint of what the park provides. According to Park Manager Gloria Sharp, the park is looking to add a remote control racecar track, pickleball courts and an indoor shooting

range. “Many of the younger Winter Texans are much more active,” she said. “We want to give them a variety of activities to enjoy.” People really step up to the plate here at the park,” Sharp said. “We have a very good relationship with our residents, and they are an active bunch.” One of the more unique activities held at the park is Wii bowling. The main hall has televisions along the walls and there is a regular league that packs the hall weekly. Resident Kip Smith bowled a Wii 300 perfect game and is highlighted in the park’s pictorial park directory. Kip and Sharon Smith stay very active at the park. Not only did Smith roll his 300 Wii game but they are part of the two-time defending champion team at Bit-O-Heaven. “We really enjoy it there,” Sharon said. “The biggest thing is everyone is just so friend-

ly. It really is a big family.” The Smiths are originally from Missouri and have been staying at Bit-O-Heaven for 12 years. They stay exceptionally active, playing petanque and participating in the bicycle club. Sharon said they attend many of the dances and go to exercise class daily. “We’re extremely busy,” she said. “But that’s what it’s all about.” The variety of dances is also a hit with the residents, from the “senior prom” to the New Year’s dance and the most popular Mardi Gras party. “Everyone enjoys getting all dressed up and having a good time,” Thomas said. “For our senior prom everyone was going to the thrift store or the ropa usada looking for tuxedos and gowns. They really enjoyed that and it was a sight to see.” The park has an outdoor pool, an indoor pool, two billiards room and rooms for cards,

sewing and other crafts. The park is conveniently located near McAllen and Weslaco for shopping or the chain restaurants, but also right down the road are at least four restaurants with home cooking from burgers at Tower Burgers and Three Sisters to a variety of foods at H & H or Martha’s. But in the end, Thomas said, it comes down to the people. “We open our arms to newcomers,” she said. “If they come from a certain state, the others here will bring them right in and they’ll be part of the group. We’ve always had active residents and friendly residents.” And in the long run, that’s what makes it a “Bit-O-Heaven.” For more information on the Bit-O-Heaven RV & Mobile Home Park, visit www. bit-o-heaven.net or call (956) 464-5191. The 55-and-over park is located at 1051 W. Business Highway 83 in Donna, Texas.

Beautiful, sub-Tropical McAllen:

Your ideal winter destination If you’re considering what to do with the freedom that comes with retirement, here’s a suggestion that’s fun, inexpensive, and, maybe most important of all, warm – McAllen! McAllen, located in the heart of Texas’ tropical southernmost area, the Rio Grande Valley, is the regional center for entertainment, arts, shopping, and the best restaurants. You’ll find plenty of activities, whether you like to enjoy outdoor pursuits or prefer to take advantage of some of the myriad classes, museums, live music, and other indoor events. It’s no wonder that McAllen, Texas, with its almost year-round sub-tropical climate, is where the heart of the continent’s best birdwatching is located. In addition to being a birding paradise, the city’s ideal weather also allows you to take advantage of other various outdoor recreational activities like golfing, fishing, camping, and hunting. Like to bike, canoe, and walk? McAllen has parks and trails perfect for such things. If indoor activities like shopping are more your cup of tea, you’ll rejoice in knowing that McAllen has more than 40 retail centers to choose from. It’s Mexico’s #1 shopping destination, which means that

because of the influx of shoppers who help support the city’s retail industry, you’ll find more stores that you’d typically expect in a city this size. And, to top off the good news, McAllen is also the country’s least expensive city – so you can shop all the bargains guilt-free! The low cost of living also means that you have lots of housing options, from over 300 area RV parks to extended stay hotels, mobile homes, apartments, and even houses to rent or buy. McAllen has also been ranked the 7th safest U.S. city, and the #1 safest in Texas. After a day of adventure, satisfy your hunger cravings for anything ranging from casual dining on grilled Angus beef burgers to gourmet dishes of succulent steak and seafood, but don’t leave McAllen before getting a taste of our extremely popular and authentic Mexican food that’s guaranteed to leave you wanting more. The city is full of not only your preferred chain restaurants, but also loads of unique local favorites with organic and farm-tofork cuisine. If you’re looking for some after dinner cocktails and dancing, the Entertainment District located in Downtown McAllen is the perfect place to unwind. With about

three dozen nightclub, lounges and bars, you’re sure to find one that suites your style. There’s so much to see and do in Edinburg! Winter Texans enjoy the arts and theater productions as well as the university’s basketball and baseball games. The school’s mariachi and folkloric dance groups are incredibly talented, putting on remarkable performances. Edinburg’s regional museum, the Museum of South Texas History, had its beginnings in 1967 as the Hidalgo County Historical Museum. Today, following a 22,500 square foot expansion, it has grown in reputation to be accredited by the American Alliance of Museums as a museum that tells the story of South Texas and parts of Northern Mexico. The museum offers a rich schedule of informative and entertaining programs. The Sunday Speaker Series features local experts who share presentations on a wide range of topics. The museum provides a series of special events during the year, including the annual

Pioneer Days celebration where people can see live exhibits and demonstrations to experience how the early pioneers lived during the early days of settling the Rio Grande Valley. The main museum exhibit tells the history of the Rio Grande Valley over hundreds of years. The South Texas Motorcycle Museum, featuring the history of motorcycles from beginning to present, is also located in Edinburg. If nature is your thing, you’re going to love Edinburg Scenic Wetlands (ESW), the Edinburg division of the World Birding Center. Located on 40 acres of wetlands, ESW has trails and water overlooks that allow visitors to watch the waterfowl and shorebirds that stop at this location. This is not only the perfect setting to observe and photograph a wide variety of birds in their natural setting, but ESW offers many programming activities such as guided nature walks and birding tours led by area experts.

Climate, friendly people, social activities appeal to Winter Texans

In local Hispanic lore there is a saying to the effect that, “Once you drink the water of the Rio Grande, you can leave, but you will always come back again!” This seems to be true for many Winter Texans who return to the Rio Grande Valley every year. Some even choose to make this their permanent home. The Winter Texan Survey conducted by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley reveals the top reasons Winter Texans come to the Valley include the climate, friendly people, social activities and the low cost of living. It’s the Warm Weather The warm weather is definitely important to Winter Texans coming to the Valley – especially since all that warm weather allows them to get outdoors and enjoy being active. As Barbara Roeder said, “One can only bake so many chocolate chip cookies or clean the house so many times before going crazy because there are three feet of snow outside!” John Kussae has been coming to the Valley for 25 years. Back in his native Wisconsin, he was a pipe fitter who worked outside all year round. “In summer it was miserably hot and in winter it was terribly cold.” When he retired he starting coming to the Valley to get away from the cold snowy winters. Virgil Kappes said he had heard a person could add an additional 10 years to his or her life by wintering the Valley away from the miserable cold weather that required going outside and shoveling snow before anyone could go anywhere. In general, all Winter Texans from the Midwestern states, who make of the

majority up the Winter Texan population, agree that they prefer to be in the Valley away from the cold weather. Many seem to take a perverse pleasure in calling family and friends back home when they know the weather is bad. On a recent visit to Victoria Palms Resort in Donna, Texas, the sun was out brightly shining and Winter Texans were swimming and sunning. The pool was full to capacity. Those who were not in the pool were wearing bathing suits or shorts and sandals and enjoying the South Texas sun. Enjoying the sunshine is not the only reason climate is important. Jim McDermid of Minnesota said he has heart and vascular disease and in the Valley the weather is good enough that he can walk almost every day and the land is flat enough that he does not have to climb while he walks. Another Winter Texan attending the Mission Mega Winter Texan Fiesta said he had a heart attack down here several years ago and was pleasantly pleased to discover the Heart Hospital in McAllen was nationally rated for quality care. He made a full recovery and keeps coming back to the Valley. Friendly People Another important reason people like the Rio Grande Valley is the friendliness of the people. Not only does that include their neighbors in the park, but also the people in the community who are happy to have Winter Texans because they appreciate the economic and other benefits they bring to the Valley. Friendliness is

Winter Texans flock to Mission, Texas

Welcome to Mission, Texas where more Winter Texans come to enjoy the semi-tropical winters than any other place in the Rio Grande Valley. Mission has approximately 50 Winter Texan mobile home parks and RV resorts – retirement communities – offering a wide range of amenities and activities programs designed to make your retirement years truly golden. The sub-tropical climate of the Rio Grande Valley is not only inviting for Winter Texans, but also attracts 500 species of birds and 200 species of butterflies. The World Birding Center Headquarters and the National Butterfly Center, both located in Mission, offer abundant opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty of the outdoors. For those who pursue birdies of a different type, Mission offers four golf courses: the 27-hole Shary Municipal Golf Course, Howling Trails Golf Course, Meadow Creek Resort & Country Club and The Club at Cimarron, a private club with a beautiful course. Duffers coming to the Valley from other areas are pleasantly surprised at the bargain prices for a round of golf in the Mission area. For those who enjoy an active lifestyle there is plenty to do in Mission. Many of the mobile home parks and RV resorts have their own swimming pools, and the City of Mission has two city pools, an indoor pool at Bannworth Park and a newly-renovated

outdoor pool at Mayberry. Pickleball anyone? Mission Parks & Recreation has a very active senior pickleball program. Recreational softball programs are also available. Speaking of parks, Mission has 25 city parks, including the 63-acre Bentsen Palm Community Park, a regional park with picnic shelters, a two-acre pond with pier, lighted baseball/softball fields, restrooms, playground, basketball courts, shuffleboard courts, three lighted tennis courts, and a two-mile walking trail. Another popular park is Bannworth Park, which includes a jogging trail, playground, pond with a pier (and lots of ducks), picnic pavilion, picnic tables, football/soccer field, baseball/softball field, restrooms, and play area. The Mission Hike & Bike Trail provides a peaceful setting for Winter Texans to walk, jog or bike along a five-mile paved trail through a wooded area that leads to the World Birding Center, just down the road from several of Mission’s popular RV resort destinations. If you’re an artist, or if you fancy taking up painting or ceramics, Mission’s Upper Valley Art League may be your cup of tea. Local artists put together classes, art shows and exhibitions for the public to enjoy. You can enjoy the delightful Mexican culture of folklórico dancers and mariachi

bands as local high schools and the nearby university offer excellent programs and prize-winning performances.

Affordable Retirement Lifestyle

Mission has been named as one of the best places to retire because the cost of living is much lower than most other retirement areas, and it offers all the amenities and pleasurable activities seniors look for today. Many Winter Texans have tried visiting Florida and Arizona, but found the Rio Grande Valley of Texas to be much more affordable and enjoyable. They also find it is easier to access great entertainment offered either in their own resort or by neighboring resorts just down the road – at very affordable prices. You will find the people are friendlier in the Rio Grande Valley too. The city of Mission and local businesses have been rolling out the red carpet for Winter Texans for over 40 years and they look forward to your arrival each fall and winter. So, come on down and take a pontoon boat ride on the Rio Grande and sip a margarita or enjoy dinner as you take in the scenic vistas along the river. We’ll be waiting for you with open arms. And you can leave your snow shovel at home! Visit us online at discovermission.com or call the Mission Chamber of Commerce for more information at 956.585.2727.

UIL State Mariachi Festival Competition To be held in the Rio Grande Valley for the first time ever at the Alejandro “Alex” H. Saenz Performing Arts Center.

From pg. 1 Winter Texans are enjoying golf at a growing pace in the Rio Grande Valley. Golf pros and directors across the region said they have seen an increase in rounds – by as much as 20 percent at one course – just this year. “There has been a definite increase,” said Carlos Espinosa, director of golf for McAllen’s municipal course. “While the trend was decreasing, I went out and talked to many of our Winter Texan friends and listened to their feedback. We made some changes and they have been coming out to play more and more. It’s a great thing and the Valley has so many choices for them to play.” Ken Orr, Olivia Stadnyk and Dale and Linda Woytonich were enjoying a beautiful 73-degree day at Palm View recently. Orr and Stadnyk live at Adobe Wells in Mission, which sports its own nine-hole golf course. The Woytoniches live in Alamo Palms Resort in Alamo. “We’re out here one final time before heading back,” Dale Woytonich said. “We try to play as often as we can – we can’t do this back home that’s for sure.” All four live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. At the same time they were driving, chip-

ed high of 44. There was good news on the horizon, however. High temperatures were expected to reach the low 50s by the end of the week. Palm View is one of the Valley’s nicest designed and maintained courses, public or private, in the Valley. It has wide open fairways. However, you may have to cut corners or go over hazards to stay on those fairways. The driving tees also make a difference in how much of a challenge you want to take on as the course will play anywhere from 4,816 yards to 6,787 yards. Brownsville Golf Center is that city’s municipal golf course and offers a variety of Winter Texan specials, and some of the most moderate prices across the Valley. But there are more courses to attack – from South Padre Island Golf Club and its beautiful background of the Laguna Madre on some holes to Howling Trails in La Joya, which is surrounded by multiple Winter Texan RV parks, golf in the Rio Grande Valley provides good prices, better Winter Texan specials and the best winter weather any golfer could want – especially if that golfer is from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska....

Bruno Ouellet watches his tee shot while playing at Palm View Golf Course in McAllen recently. Ouellet lives in Palmview Manor during the winter and resides in Ottawa, Canada, when not enjoying the winter weather and Valley amenities.

Ken Orr watches his putt during an outing at Palm View Golf Course in McAllen. Orr resides at Adobe Wells in Mission during the winter but is from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES APPRECIATION

From pg. 1 wife, Ruth. Ronda, who’s been in the Rio Grande Valley 17 years, talked the Raines into coming three years ago and they “love the weather.” They were staying at Sunshine RV Park in Harlingen. Beverly McCammant, from Iowa and in her 21st year here, met “Bucky the Tooth” from the St. John’s Dental Clinic, which included a decorative pin as a reminder to care for one’s teeth. She was staying at Carefree Valley Resort in Harlingen and comes to Progreso occasionally. Entertainers and young people decked out in Mexican dress roamed a six-block area, which was under the watchful eyes of the police. Lee and Pat Titus had their picture taken with one of the female officers. This was the final event for the couple from Oleander Acres Park in Mission, who were heading out later in the week on a route that would take them first to Mustang Island near Corpus Christi for a stay in their motor home before making it back home to Kansas. They have spent a total of eight seasons in the Valley and “love it,” according to Pat. Guy Bowlianne, from Quebec, joined a group of young people doing a line dance on the street. He and his wife, Pearl, were newcomers, having logged just four months at the Tropic Winds Resort in Harlingen and of course the first time at Tourist Day. Pearl said they loved being in the Valley and both were emphatic about coming back next season. Another newcomer, retired navy seaman Albert Murray, was joined by a couple of costumed young women for a picture on the street. In coming, as first time visitors, his wife, Wanda, said, “We find the people so friendly (in the Valley.) They are from Kentucky and have been staying at Green Acres Park in Donna. Among those coming the farthest to be a part of Tourist Day was Carl and Jill Wendt, all the way from the capitol city of

www.wttrgv.com

Texas, a trek that started eight years ago. “We come down regularly,” Carl said. “We love it down here and we go to the dentist as well.” Jill agreed on enjoying the coming, noting their parents used to come down here. The couple, who said they were building a home north of Austin in Pflugerville, are planning to make it more convenient by bringing their RV down in the future. The couple is originally from Kansas. Food was a special focus for a lot of Winter Texans. Leon Green, from Winter Ranch Park in Alamo, carried a plate of tamales while walking down the street. He and his wife, Lois, have come the last six years to the Valley from Nebraska. They were joined by Neil Kanne, of Iowa and Winter Ranch. Enjoying platters of food at the Red Snapper Restaurant were Roger Kraemer, his wife, Susan, and mother-in-law Merle Fikor, newcomers to the Valley from Nebraska. They were enticed to come by Louis Pieper, who has been coming here about 20 years from Colorado. The Kraemers, who were staying at Citrus Mobile Home Park in Edinburg, said, “We will be back again.”

MARCH 30, 2017 WHY THE R.G.V.

From pg. 15 just part of the Hispanic culture in the RGV. Mi casa es su casa! We hear it all the time as Winter Texans who have been to Florida explain why they prefer Texas. They don’t feel welcome in Florida; the people there are unfriendly and don’t appreciate them as we do in South Texas. As a Texan, I feel as most people do in our communities throughout the RGV. We are happy to host “Welcome Home” fiestas as our winter guests begin to arrive in the Fall. And most RGV communities host “Winter Texan Appreciation” events at the end of the winter season to let our Winter Texans know we really do appreciate them choosing the Valley as their winter home. Texas even coined the endearing name “Winter Texan” for our adopted Texans from up north. Great Social Life and Activities If there is one thing Winter Texans are known for in the RGV, it’s they know how to have a good time! So when you come to the Valley get ready to enjoy life. It’s like a four to six month vacation. To get some idea of what Winter Texans do in the RGV, one can peruse through the Parks Calendar in any January or February edition of the Winter Texan Times. (By the end of March when this edition is being printed, the season is coming to a close and the park activities have almost

www.wttrgv.com come to a standstill until next season.) As I scan through the Parks Calendar that ran in our February 2 edition, first I observe that the Calendar begins on page 10 and finishes on page 27 – literally dozens and dozens and dozens of things to do – and that’s just what’s happening in the MH and RV parks. Let’s see what was happening February 2. Biscuits & Gravy Breakfast at Lamplighter Park, a Craft Show at Tropic Winds Resort, Craft Fair at Pine to Palm, Quilt & Craft Show at Orange Grove RV, Quilt & Hobby Show at Alamo Rec-Veh Park, Country Jam at El Valle del Sol Park, Bluegrass Jam at Lamplighter, Lunch at Bentsen Grove Resort, Pancakes at The Grove, Country Western Jam at Bentsen Grove, Big Band/ Rock Jam at Paradise Resort Estates, and there’s much more including dances and live entertainment. Providing that live entertainment are many excellent performers who come to the Valley during their “off season” in Branson, Nashville and other parts of the country to perform their shows in the RV resorts, and the cost is typically in the $7 to $8 range. Quite a bargain compared to Branson’s show prices. And the events in the Parks Calendar are activities that are open to out-of-park guests, so you can attend any of these you choose. In addition, there are many MH & RV park activities that don’t go in the Parks Calendar. This would include activities such as dance classes, exercise class-

WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com

es, card games, quilting, crafts and hobby groups and many other park activities designed primarily for the parks’ residents. Adding to the social aspect of the Winter Texan lifestyle is the park community of friends and neighbors who participate in many activities together. It’s a great life!

It’s Down Right Affordable It’s a fact: Texas is much more economical than Florida and Arizona. Winter Texan John Tim says, “People who know they have money go to Florida. People who think they have money go to Arizona. Everybody else goes to Texas because it is the most economical place See WHY THE R.G.V. pg. 27

Winter Texans enjoyed line dancing, live entertainment and some great food at this year’s South Padre Island WinterFest held at Schlitterbahn Resort.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES WHY THE R.G.V.

From pg. 26 of playing golf. “In Florida, I paid $90 for a round of golf. In Texas I can play an equally challenging round of golf for $35.” I stumbled into a group of men at Ranchero Village in Weslaco, Texas, most of whom were from Minnesota, so I asked them if it really is much more economical. Jim Lindquist said almost everything costs less in the Rio Grande Valley. From the food in the grocery stores and restaurants, to the cost of staying in the parks and the cost of the shows and other entertainment in the Valley. Leland Heldstad said even gasoline runs about $1 less in the Rio Grande Valley than it does in Minnesota. Lindquist mentioned an article he read in AARP that said Texas was the best state to retire in because it had the lowest taxes. Texas has no state income tax. And as for property taxes, homeowners can claim a homestead exemption and also get their taxes frozen if they are age 65 or older. For Canadians, whose dollar is currently valued at about 75 percent of the American dollar, it is still more economical to come to the Rio Grande Valley than to stay at home, said Doug Cowling, of Saskatchewan, Canada. “Things just cost more in Canada because we have so many taxes. The food, housing, clothing and most other expens-

www.wttrgv.com

es are simply less [here] than they are at home.” Cowling said. “Many Canadians buy all of their new clothes and shoes and other personal items and take them home along with gifts for family members because they simply cost less here. Wintering in Texas is a bargain.” Cowling said, “The Valley is a wellkept secret. Florida is much more expensive and the people [there] are not friendly.” Those on a very restricted budget, as well as those who just like to save money, can find great bargains at local flea markets, such as Don-Wes Flea Market, the local ropa usada (used clothing store) and other thrift stores that are abundant in the RGV. Our Winter Texans at Ranchero Village also agreed they save a lot of money on heating fuel for their homes by coming to the Valley where the winters are mild. There are a variety of reasons why people choose to come the Rio Grande Valley. Whether it’s being able to fish or golf year-round or the social life of tightknit Winter Texan communities in the parks, most folks want to get out and have a good time enjoying their retirement. Folks have a good time here and all that fun and laughter is great for a person’s health. So, come on down to South Texas where the good times roll. We’d love to have you!

Rio Grande Valley has first class entertainment

By Kathy Olivarez Winter Texans love to be entertained and there are enough entertainment venues that one could go to a different event every day of the month. Today, many of the entertainers come from Branson and Nashville. This movement started many years ago but has gained momentum in recent years when Branson entertainers like Gordy and Debbie learned about the Rio Grande Valley. Since the winter months are the off season for Branson, these professional quality entertainers come here to perform in the RV resorts. Gordy and Debbie were an immediate hit with Winter Texans and had a great first year doing performances in parks. The next year they came back and brought a few friends such as John Sager. Others have joined the fun and now entertainers like Dave and Daphne come from Nashville. (He was formerly lead guitar player for Barbara Mandrell and she sang gospel with The Gaithers Homecoming Show). One new act to hit the Valley this year is Diana Lynn, of Branson, who sings the songs of Karen Carpenter that are favored by younger Winter Texans. Gordy and Debbie are immensely popular and have won the Valley Star Award for Duet Musical Group of the Year six

times. Bill Chrastil has been voted Male Vocalist of the Year for the past two years as he performs tributes to many of the singers of the 60s such as Tom Jones and Neill Diamond and Elvis Presley. In 2017 he was also named the Valley’s Entertainer of the Year. Johnny Ray Gomez, an incredibly entertaining accordion player/comedian from Nebraska who has performed, was named the 2017 Novelty Act of the Year at the Valley Star Awards. Johnny Ray performed with the great Johnny Swaboda and his Silver Streak Accordion Band. Leslie Blasing is certainly one of the Winter Texans’ favorite entertainers. This talented vocalist was voted Female Vocalist of the Year from 2013 to 2016 and Entertainer of the Year from 2014-2016 in the Valley Star Awards. She calls South Padre Island home and performs many of her shows there. Also very popular are comedians Bernie and Red, from England via British Columbia, Canada. Link Union “grew up” in the Valley and then moved on to bigger venues. Red Head Express also grew up in the Valley and now performs in Nashville. Goldwing, originally from Oklahoma, performs in the Valley each season to the delight of Winter Texans. The group also performs in Branson. Mario Rosales, who winters in the Valley, is now playing in Las Vegas. The Richard Lynch Band, from Ohio, comes to get away from the cold for a couple of weeks. Lynch has written songs that have gone to the top of the Country Music charts. Kenny Hess, a popular Canadian performer, has also done many appearances in the Rio Grande Valley. Ralph Kuster and Freddie and Sheila Pelletier are also Canadian performers who come annually to the Valley to entertain, and there are many more excellent entertainers who perform regularly in the RV resorts. In addition, there are a few of leading See FIRST CLASS pg. 33

Martin & Monroe entertain the Valley For two years in a row the Martin & Monroe show won the National Rising Star Award for the best Frank Sinatra/ Dean Martin Tribute Band. The show sold out everywhere including the Sinatra Showroom at Lake Tahoe’s Cal-Nevada Resort. Bob Caudie and his wife, Sherri-Lynn, who in her own right is a premier Marilyn tribute artist, have recently moved to McAllen and are available for shows. Bob performs songs like “Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime” and Sherri-Lynn does Marilyn’s famous “I Wanna Be Loved by You” as part of their show. Bob has performed with dozens of Rat Pack tribute bands across the country in casinos, lodges, theaters, senior facilities, vet hospitals and Red Hat conventions. Sherri-Lynn is also known for her version of Marilyn’s famous “Happy Birthday to You” song that she often performs Bob and Sherri-Lynn met in 2011 at the Cal-Neva Lodge, once owned by Frank Sinatra in the early 60s. He was doing a Dean Martin performance in the Frank Sinatra showroom and she was Marilyn.

Bob is a sound-alike for Dean while Sherri-Lynn is a look alike for Marilyn. From the night they met, it was an instant connection and they have been working together ever since. The chemistry they have together shows and makes the show more charming. As a result, people love their duets. Both are singers. While he sings she does a costume change from a different Marilyn movie then comes back and sings a song from that film. Their show is about 45 minutes long and afterwards there is a meet and greet time so that anyone who wants his or her picture taken with Marilyn or Dean can do so. The couple recently moved to McAllen when Bob took a job with the McAllen Convention Center so they are available for shows now. If any of the Winter Texan parks would like to book a late spring or summer show, they can contact the Martin & Monroe Show at (530) 5366307 or email makeitallreal@gmail.com.

ing group. Senior Ambassadors and Men of A-Chord are men’s singing groups. In addition, there is the Rio Grande Valley Orchestra and a Winter Texan Concert Band, both comprised primarily of Winter Texans. For those who enjoy local theater, the Pharr Community Theater is quite good. Pharr Community Theater will be offering several plays in parks this coming season. For Winter Texans who prefer to dance, a dance can be found any night of the week in some park. While most are country western, square, round or ballroom dancing, rock ‘n roll is growing in popularity. For those who prefer sporting events, The Vipers, a minor league basketball team, is headquartered in McAllen. The University of Texas RGV basketball season is also active during the season and has many Winter Texan fans. And for those who simply prefer a movie, The Rio Grande Valley has movie theaters in almost every community that offer a variety of first run movies at much lower prices than in the metro areas of the state. Most even have a lower admission price for matinees during the day or a special day during the week. The Rio Grande Valley has come a long way in the past few years in terms of entertainment; there is plenty to keep you as busy as you want to be. Come on down and let us entertain you!

From pg. 31 ing resorts, such as Llano Grande Resort, that bring in top shows like the Oakridge Boys. Several years ago, Victoria Palms Resort brought in the Liverpool Legends, a very talented Beatles tribute band that has since returned each year, booking their own theaters. The new McAllen Performing Arts Center in McAllen has brought back Broadway shows after an absence of several years. “Jersey Boys” was one of the offerings this season. They are also bringing in well-known entertainers such as Paul Anka, who will be performing in April. Many smaller venues such as the Riverside Club bring in live bands to perform, but some of their shows grew so big they had to be moved to the Pharr Convention Center. One of the bigger ones featured Gene Watson, Moe Bandy and friends. For those who enjoy classical music the Valley Symphony Orchestra offers four concerts during Winter Texan season featuring classical music. Their concerts are held in the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Performing Arts Center in Edinburg and the new McAllen Performing Arts Center. There are also ample opportunities for Winter Texans who love to play instruments or sing in choral groups. The Magic Valley Sweet Adelines is a women’s sing-

MARCH 30 , 2017 THANK YOU

From pg. 1 we would not be the same without you. As this season closes and we look forward to you returning in the fall, we hope you will invite your friends and neighbors back home to come down and see what the Valley is all about. We want to thank all of you who have answered the call to become Winter Texan Ambassadors this year, sharing the good news with your friends and family. With all the “bad news” about the violence in Mexico, some folks up north are afraid to come to South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley.

www.wttrgv.com But, as you obviously know, it is very safe here in the Valley. In fact, with thousands of additional law enforcement and Border Patrol personnel now assigned to the Rio Grande Valley area, officials say it’s safer than ever before. And I agree. Every city in America has crime, but the crime rates in the Valley are extremely low compared to most other areas. So, we hope you’ll share the message with everyone back home. Tell them what a great time you had here this season, how wonderful the warm weather is and how affordable it is to stay in the Rio Grande Valley.

Ambassadors Wanted

Getting out and doing all the interesting things you can do in the “winter” in the RGV is always more fun when you do it with friends. So, we invite you become a Winter Texan Ambassador and help us invite more people to come down and enjoy our South Texas Hospitality. If you haven’t already “enlisted” in the cause, just pick up some extra copies of this Take Home Edition of the Winter Texan Times so you can share them with your friends up north. We’ve printed extra copies just for you to share and we are delivering extra copies to the parks this

week. If your park runs out, call us to reserve some papers to pick up and take home with you. We will have extras available here for you. Our phone number is 956-580-7800. If you run out of copies, you can also show them our digital editions online at www.wttrgv.com. Thanks again for coming. We will surely miss you this summer and look forward to your return. Have a wonderful summer with your family and friends. Warm regards, Jim Brunson, Publisher
