Welcome Back Winter Texans!
Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Vol. 31, No. 1 © 2017-2018 www.wttrgv.com Thursday, October 19, 2017
Welcome back, Winter Texans Welcome back, folks. It seems like it’s been forever since you were here with us enjoying the great weather and abundance of fun activities in the Rio Grande Valley. While it’s been a Jim Brunson busy summer, we are always eager for a new Winter Texan season to begin. Welcome to Texas! We’re glad you’re here! This past weekend as I was driving back to the Valley from a Texas Press Association conference for newspaper publishers it struck me: Winter Texans are smart! This thought came as I was See WELCOME BACK pg. 19
Texas Butterfly Festival takes flight Nov. 4-7 in Mission
Butterfly watching is a huge hobby for people around the world. Butterfly enthusiasts from 23 states and four countries flocked to last year’s Texas Butterfly Festival at the National Butterfly Center in Mission. This year’s event, the 22nd annual, will be held from Saturday, Nov. 4 to Tuesday, Nov. 7. The event is a great opportunity for long-time butterfliers to mark that extremely rare specimen off their checklist. For the new butterflier, or those maybe looking to start, this is like learning a language by immersion – you are surrounded by butterflies and will no doubt get a great start to your checklist. RGV Winter Texan visitors on the rise Local resorts report increased reservations again this year
Don Wilson remembers when he and his wife Jeni were making their first stint as park managers a few years ago at Bentsen Palm Village RV Resort in Mission. They oversaw the park, which has approximately 245 RV spaces. “The park would be full and there would be a waiting list of as many as 30 people wanting to get in,” Wilson said. “That’s a good problem to have.” The Wilsons, who moved to the Valley from Las Vegas, then took a few years off to travel in 2011 and came back in June 2015. They noticed something had happened. A strange quiet, comparatively speaking, had engulfed the resort. The park had fewer Winter Texan visitors than before. “Don’t know what happened during that two- or three-year period,” Wilson said. “People were saying all sorts of things...people just weren’t here. But it wasn’t just here, it was all over. Everything was dormant. I asked the owner what he thought – we just didn’t know.” Then things picked up last season Valleywide and, according to park managers who were recently interviewed, there is even more of an upswing this year than the Valley has seen in a quite some time. Park managers are clearly excited. “I think we are going to be above the market average when it comes to residency this year,” said Rocky Ramirez, park manager at Alamo Palms Mobile Park in Alamo. “I think the increase in part is due to keeping our product up to date and fresh. We’re always adding things and listening to what our residents enjoy. The market has been relatively flat the past two years and I think we’re having a good swing upwards to the market.” Many resorts and RV parks are saying the same thing. Dora Alvarado, one of three park managers for Bit-O-Heaven RV and Mobile Home Park said that there is a definite increase in reservations already. Wilson at Bentsen Palm Village said the park is 100-percent booked for January and February while also being about 75 percent booked in December. Last year, he said, the park was booked overall See ON THE RISE pg. 18
Alamo Palms Mobile Park Manager Rocky Ramirez and resident Ila Wisdom, a Fort Worth native, stand on her front porch next to a bottle tree. Wisdom is planning an early returning Winter Texan get together on Friday in her yard at the park. Ramirez, like many managers across the Rio Grande Valley, is expecting an increase in reservations for the 2017-18 season.
RGV Birding Festival brings excitement
The Least Grebe is one of the species that participants in this year’s RGV Birding Festival may expect to see. Photo taken by Bill Supulski at Estero Llano Grande.
When the Amazon Kingfisher bird was spotted along Highway 107 in Cameron County, it caused a stir. That “stir” was so big that Cameron County Sheriff Eddie Lucio had to send deputies to oversee traffic. The Amazon Kingfisher is a rare bird. In the American Birding Association (ABA) lingo, it’s a Code 5. (See the ABA Code list on pg. 19.) Ironically the bird made its appearance during the 20th anniversary of the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival. A Code 5 bird, according to the ABA is considered a species that has been recorded five or fewer times in the ABA Checklist Area, or fewer than three records in the past 30 years. According to Birds of North America, “the Amazon Kingfisher (Chloroceryle amazona) is a resident breeding kingfisher in the lowlands of the American tropics from southern Mexico south through Central America to northern Argentina.” See BIRDING FESTIVAL pg. 17

Pow Wow next week preserves Indian heritage
The 47th annual Dak’ EE Si Pow Wow takes place from 10 a.m. - 10 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 28 at Lark Community Center in McAllen. The event is free and open to the public. The Pow Wow, just three years away from what should be a huge 50th celebration, was almost called the 28th annual event. “We didn’t open it to the public until 1989 so we were counting just those years,” said Robert Soto, who is a member of, and serves as vice chairman on the council of the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas. He is also the director of communications of the tribe. “Then we decided that it was silly to do it that way because we had been doing the pow wow since 1970, so this is our 47th.” The event is a way for the Native American tribe to not only keep their heritage alive, but to also share that heritage with other tribes and non-natives. “Dak’ ee si means the fall ceremony of celebration,” Soto said. “A long time ago my ancestors would have two ceremonies every year – a get together in October to celebrate the end of the harvest, when things go dormant. Then we would have one in spring for the beginning of the new harvest. So it would be every year a cele-
bration for the end and for the beginning.” Soto has been Indian dancing since he was 8 years old, a little more than 50 years. He has also been a Feather Dancer for approximately 45 years and has won many awards for his Indian dancing and artwork in various pow wows throughout the nation. Those who attend the event will be treated to a celebration of American Indian culture, history, drumming, singing and dancing for all ages. Some of the dances will be open to not only a variety of tribes, but to the public for audience participation. There will also be as many as 50 vendors, according to Soto, selling native food, arts, crafts, beads, supplies, jewelry, dream catchers and food. “People really like the fried bread,” said Soto, who was in Milwaukee, Wisc., to attend the annual National Congress of American Indians’ 74th annual Convention and Marketplace that runs from Oct. 15-20. “But we will have Indian tacos and Indian hot dogs and a variety of food and crafts and a lot of other things for people to see and enjoy.” The entire Soto family and ancestry have played a huge part in keeping the Lipan Apache tradition alive and known
throughout South Texas and beyond. In 1972, the Soto family started dancing together as a group to help preserve their Lipan tradition and in 1977 they became known as the South Texas Indian Dancers (STIDA). Soto said people will have an opportunity to witness a variety of dances. “There will be intertribal danes, there will also be a gourd dance, war dance, a round dance and other exhibitions,” he said. “Other dances like the buffalo dance, snake dance, the two-step, are all See POW WOW pg. 4

dances we use.” Each type of dance has its own meaning. There are several opinions regarding the origin of the gourd dance, a dance that is used to honor a warrior. Many opinions state that the dance originated with the Kiowa Tribe. The dance will be one of the featured dances at the day-long pow wow. The buffalo dance is known as “a ritual group dance of North American Indians imitative of the buffalo for cure, for success in the hunt, or as part of the sun-dance ceremony,” according to Merriam-Webster. The Free Dictionary online describes the snake dance as “any of various ceremonial dances of American Indian peoples in which snakes are handled or imitated by the dancers.” Since its origin, the STIDA has opened its membership to anyone who is of American Indian descent or who would
like to learn more about the rich heritage of Native people. The South Texas Indian Dancers travel to various pow wows throughout the year where they have received many honors for their individual performances. The group also provides cultural and educational performances in schools, churches, fairs, and civic organizations to help educate the community of the Native and especially the Lipan Apache culture. “This is a way of keeping our heritage alive,” Soto said. “The Lipan Apaches had a stronghold in the Valley. Starr County was especially our stronghold and then the western side of Hidalgo County. We want to let people know about our history and our culture and we want to celebrate life.” Lark Community Center is located at 2601 Lark Ave., McAllen.

Champion UTRGV Lady Vaqueros continue winning ways this season By Henry Miller The NCAA Women’s Volleyball season is well underway and most teams are in the second half of their conference play. Heading into the middle of November, the top-25 in Division I volleyball was peppered with schools in Winter Texan land. From the Big 10 conference, Penn St., Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Purdue, Ohio St. and Illinois were ranked 1, 4, 5, 11, 13 and 22 respectively, while Kansas, out of the Big 12, was ranked 12. While the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley may not be ranked in Division I volleyball – yet – they have shown that they are a quality program that can give fans of all ages and knowledge a lot of excitement. Recently just coming off a seven-match win streak, the Lady Vaqueros are competing for the Western Athletic Conference Championship and are coming off a year where they went from obscurity to a stunning championship in the WAC postseason tournament. That victory earned the team an automatic berth into the NCAA Volleyball Championship Tournament where, unfortunately for the
Lady Vaqueros, they drew the top-ranked University of Texas in the first round. Still, the steps they took have only brought more talent to the school and UTRGV held a 5-1 conference record midway through the season and had a streak winning 10 of 12. UTRGV head coach Todd Lowery is in his third year at the helm of the team and has done nothing but improve the quality of the program. Lowery won two national small school championships at the University of Texas Brownsville before being brought on to lead UTRGV. Last year the Lady Vaqueros became the first No. 5 seed to win the WAC Tournament Championship. Lowery coached the team to its first winning season in 13 years, posting the best winning percentage (.600) and most wins (21) in NCAA DI program history. UTRGV opened the season with a signature win at Baylor, a team that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, en route to the Baylor Invitational Tournament Championship. By season’s end, UTRGV was one of just four teams in the NCAA Tournament with three players averaging at least three
UTRGV Lady Vaqueros 2016 Championship Team. kills per set, including All-WAC honorees Bojana Mitrovic and Alisha Watson, the latter of which was the WAC Tournament MVP, and Ragni Steen Knudsen, who broke the NCAA DI program record for kills in a season. UTRGV put together the best blocking season in program history, as Barbara Silva, Alexandra Ecker and Mitrovic all surpassed the previous NCAA DI program record for block assists in a season. Silva also shattered the program records for blocks per set and total blocks. UTRGV showed strong passing ability throughout the season, as Fatoumata Dacosta ranked first in the WAC and the state of Texas as well as 19th in the nation in digs. As a team, UTRGV led the WAC and ranked in the top 20 in the nation in kills, assists, digs and blocks. So, while UTRGV may not have the storied past of those perennial Big 10 powers, there is little doubt that the Lady Vaqueros are on the right path and quickly moving up the ranks.
Winter Texans return to the Valley in time to not only see what should be an exciting final few conference matches, but also in time to see the Lady Vaqueros in action with two more regular season conference home matches before the tournament begins. UTRGV will host Seattle University at 7 p.m. on Nov. 2 and two days later on Nov. 4 Utah Valley comes to the Rio Grande Valley for a noon meeting. That match is senior day, the last regular-season home match. The WAC tournament begins Nov. 16 at UTRGV with matches scheduled for 4:30 and 7 p.m. The semifinals will be held Nov. 17 at 4:30 and 7 p.m. The championship will be held at 7 p.m., Nov. 18. General Admission tickets are $7, Senior Citizen tickets (65 and older) are $6. Tickets can be purchased by calling Johnny Zapata at (956) 665-3747 or by email at johnny.zapata@utrgv.edu.
Who is Robert Soto and the Lipan Apache?
The Lipan Apaches at one time lived in Southwest Texas and along its border with northern Mexico until the 1880s, after Texas had become a state and passed laws forbidding Native Americans from living in the newfound state. At that time, most of the Lipan Apaches moved to the mountains of Mexico and to several of the reservations in New Mexico and Oklahoma. Yet many of them continued to live in the area by changing their names and adopting the Mexican culture. Robert Soto is a descendent of all See ROBERT SOTO pg. 20

It also includes Sunday’s “Border Buttermilk” Dinner at al Fresco in Weslaco and Monday’s banquet with naturalist and keynote speaker Sam Jaffe, with a silent auction to benefit the center’s educational programs. Jaffe, a naturalist-photographer from Massachusetts has developed educational programs over the past 10 years that use native, local caterpillars to present a new
brand of education across New England. Jaffe launched the Caterpillar Lab organization in 2013. His group travels the country using their unique caterpillar resources to inspire and inform. The Caterpillar Lab raises thousands of caterpillars, of hundreds of species, at an open-to-the-public facility and brings them to museums, nature centers, and schools where they present the caterpillars. According to their Facebook page their programs “highlight the diversity of our local ecosystems, encourage exploration, teach unexpected lessons in insect biology, evolution and metamorphosis, and stress the need for environmental respect. We reach tens of thousands of people with these programs each year, with

Padre Island, along with other groups and organizations. Avid birders know that the Rio Grande Valley is a birder’s paradise. There are nine different World Birding Centers strewn across South Texas from South Padre Island through Hidalgo County and on to Roma in Starr County. For those who are novices – or those who have yet to begin – the process is an easy one. Want to try it for the first time? All you need are some high-power binoculars. If you are a butterflier and have binoculars for that style of watching, they won’t work for birding. “Butterfly watchers have binoculars that are used more to show definition on something that’s about six to 10 feet away,” Bulow said. “You’re not going to get that with bird watching so you need something with more power to help you see the markings and see what other identifiers they have.” Bulow recommends that if you get a pair of binoculars before either going to the festival or just to begin bird watching, practice looking through them. Often, there’s not much time to “get on a bird” and it becomes important to become familiar with looking through the lenses and being able to quickly find the species. “I would just start practicing in my backyard at the birds there,” Bulow said. “You never know how long a bird is going to be somewhere and you need to get on the bird quickly. Some people may take a while to get used to putting binoculars up and looking through them, but that’s really the way to go.”
From pg. 1 Tammie Bulow, who is the registrar for the 24th annual Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival from Nov. 8-12 in Harlingen, has been a birder for more than 40 years. She has been an attendee at the event for two years, a vendor for three years and is now employed by the Festival. “On a scale of 1-10, it is a 10 as far as festivals go,” Bulow said. “That’s backed up by comments on our Facebook Page and what we hear and by how well it’s attended.” Using the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium as home, the five-day event has literally hundreds of pre- and post event trips surrounding the festival. There are workshops, seminars, and field trips, which are directed by professionals on either a bus or van. More than 60 vendors of bird-related products are available for every level of birder at the Birders Bazaar. Field trips are listed on a downloadable worksheet at rgvbf.com. There is a $25 registration fee to participate, then there are separate fees for different field trips, seminars and workshops. The Kiskadee Pass ($25) will also be offered as a blanket registration to cover all seminars and workshops. “There are literally 100 or more field trips to choose from,” said Bulow, whose past involvement in birding includes president of the Denver Field Ornithologists Club, president of the Central New Mexico Audubon Society and executive director of the World Birding Center on South

Checklists are available at the festival, at the World Birding Centers across the Valley and there are plenty more options online. “We import a lot of field trip leaders to come down to his event and they bring along a lot of experience,” Bulow said. “That’s just one of the things that makes this event so high quality.” How did the Amazon Kingfisher or any Code 5 bird get out of its normal region and to South Texas? Of course, they flew – but why and how? “A lot of birds will show up here out of their territory and out of their ranges because they were just blown here,” Bulow said. “Also, a lot of times after breeding season the birds will just fly aimlessly and let the wind take them. There is also a great source of food here. “And I’m sure there are a lot of rare birds that have come through that have not been discovered. That’s another thing that makes this festival so fun and exciting. You don’t know what’s going to show up.” It is not unusual for enthusiasts to not just come from all over the country, but there have been times when the serious birder will travel across oceans to see a rare bird, something so rare they can mark off their checklist that it almost becomes a bucket list bird. There are two keynote speakers scheduled to appear. Nathan Pieplow is the author of “Peterson Field Guide to Birds Sounds of Eastern North America.” His blog “Earbirding,” focuses on his indepth study. A co-author of the website
“Colorado Birding Trail” and a former editor of the journal “Colorado Birds,” he currently teaches writing and rhetoric at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Nathan will help birders visualize and identify bird sounds with his talk entitled “Bird Sounds Decoded,” which will be held at 6:15 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 9. The other keynote speaker is Noah Strycker. His talk, entitled “Birding Without Borders: An Epic World Big Year,” will be held at 6:15, Friday, Nov. 10. In 2015, Noah Strycker traveled 41 countries and all seven continents to set the world record by seeing 6,042 species of birds (more than half the birds on the planet) in one calendar year. He has written three books, is an Associate Editor of “Birding” magazine, and is seasonally the on-board ornithologist for expeditions to Antarctica and the high Arctic. One thing is for sure, nobody can predict what rare species may show up this year at the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival. In fact, Bulow said that because of all the tropical storms and hurricanes, there could be a whole lot of new and rare birds around South Texas. “The storm activity in the Gulf and the Atlantic has been unbelievable and it may bring who knows what kind of birds here. We’re excited about this year’s festival. It’s really going to be first class once again. For more information on the 24th consecutive Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival, visit rgvbf.org or on Facebook search RGVBF.

From pg. 1 at about 80 percent. He’s already expecting to see an increase to that number this year. “This year is going to be better than last year and we are happy with that and the owners are also happy,” Wilson said. “When we were here before, we would be full from December through March and we would have a waiting list. We want to get back to that – the way we are going, next season we might be close. We’re liking it right now.” Ramirez started as the park manager in August for Alamo Palms. The 39-yearold McAllen native has spent 20 years in the hospitality business, mainly with hotels. He said that this upswing in residents means it’s a time to shine and to turn firsttime visitors into annual guests.
www.wttrgv.com
“This is a time to shine. We are going to get some new people and we get a chance to wow them,” Ramirez said. “It’s all about the service and, at this park in particular, we have a bevy of activities and amentities – and I’m here to serve our residents. That’s what I really enjoy.” Park managers across the Valley agreed that there’s a younger generation of Winter Texans on the market and some of those may be displaced this year from Florida, where most of the state is still recovering from hurricane and tropical storm damage. Managers said they are also noticing an uptick of French-Canadiens. “Residents would pay top dollar in the Florida market and they are going to see that they will be paying half the price with the same type of amenities and getting the same or better service down here,” Ramirez said. “Here we’ve created an en-
vironment of family and friendship. The ones who come down year after year come down to see their [Winter Texan] friends again and hang out with them. There are a
lot of public spaces available to do things and create more amenities that our residents are interested in. That’s what we do, serve our residents. It’s all about that.”
A birder’s account from 10000birds. com recollects when he first heard the announcement, which spread like wildfire through field trip leaders, birders and social media. “I had made some late morning breakfast plans with my friend Amy and sent, “Breakfast plans may change for me with the Amazon Kingfisher news. Amy texted back and we made plans to get cleaned up and go for the bird. At this point the bird and directions were already on the American Birding Association rare bird alert. Amy and I headed out and wondered exactly how we were going to know
where the bird was being seen. No worries it was very clear where the bird was being seen. Field trip leaders were rerouting their buses and vans to give people the chance to see an ABA Code 5 rarity and a second US record bird. If you can believe it…the Birding 101 field trip which is for people who are going on their first bird trip ever got this bird. There was even a festival volunteer in an orange vest helping to direct traffic….Amy and I walked to the crowd and as soon as we did… Amazon Kingfisher. Boom! It was that easy.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES WELCOME BACK
From pg. 1 passing a beautiful motorhome headed south on I-37 toward the RGV. You guys and gals have this figured out. Just as you arrive in mid- to late October, the weather is perfect in the Valley. It was so nice to walk outside this morning to a delightful 57 degrees – great weather for a brisk walk, a bike ride, or perhaps a round of golf. It is simply wonderful outside after we had a nice little cool front come through, bringing the daytime high temperatures down in the 70s and 80s. Sure beats the heat we had just a couple of months ago – hovering around the century mark day after day. Dog days of August are over! And although the temperatures will rise slightly over the next few days, we’re expecting another cool front to come through Sunday or Monday. Again, just enough cooler air to make being outdoors very pleasant indeed. JB We’re delighted to see many of you are coming back early this year. And we are just as happy as the RV resort managers to learn that reservations at the parks are looking quite healthy this year – even more than last year, which was better than the year before. Thank you for coming to spend your winter with us. And a special thank you to those who spend the entire season with us – October through March. JB We look forward to visiting with you at various activities in the MH & RV resorts. If your resort or park is having a special event, give us a call or email us at news@ wttrgv.com and we’ll try to come out. We

can’t attend them all, but we’ll make as many as we can. Your activity directors can also send us photos of your events for publication in the Winter Texan Times print edition or online at www.wintertexantimes.com, where we have a photo gallery for Winter Texan activities. JB In closing this week’s column, I just want to give thanks to the good Lord for all that is good in life – my wife and family top the list. But I’m thankful for a beautiful day, for the beautiful weather, for our Winter Texan friends, for a great hometown and for the country we get to call home. I know there is a lot of bickering and tension in our country today, but we have the power to make this a better place just by putting a smile on our face and being patient and understanding. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons I enjoy being around Winter Texans so much. You look for the joy in life – that which is good around us and in us. And you show the rest of us how we can make a difference by helping others. God bless, and have a wonderful day!
American Birding Association Codes for Birds:
Code 1 and Code 2: Regularly occurring North American avifauna. Includes regular breeding species and visitors. There is no firm designation between Code 1 and Code 2 species, except that logically Code 1 species are more widespread and are usually more numerous. Code 2 species have a restricted North American range, are more wide-

spread, but occur in lower densities, or are quite secretive making their detection often difficult. We readily acknowledge that some Code 2 species are harder to find than some species that have higher codes. Code 3: Rare. Species that occur in very low numbers, but annually, in the ABA Checklist Area. This includes visitors and rare breeding residents. Code 4: Casual. Species not recorded annually in the ABA Checklist Area, but with six or more
total records—including three or more in the past 30 years—reflecting some pattern of occurrence. Code 5: Accidental. Species that are recorded five or fewer times in the ABA Checklist Area, or fewer than three records in the past 30 years. Code 6: Cannot be found. The species is probably or actually extinct or extirpated from the ABA Checklist Area, or all survivors are held in captivity (or releases are not yet naturally re-established).

Women’s Basketball quarterfinalists UTRGV ready for new season to start
“
In the past three seasons, the UTRGV Women’s Basketball Team has put together some impressive accolades. During that time frame, the Lady Vaqueros have won 57 games, earning a berth to the Women’s National Invi-
tational Tournament and a pair of invitations and appearances in the Women’s Basketball Invitational quarterfinals. But that past has little to no bearing on this year’s squad. “We’re 0-0,” said Larry Tidwell, head coach for the Lady Vaqueros. “What we did last year and the years before was really nice and makes our program better, but right now we’re at ground zero. We’ve got to build ourselves up, we’ve got to have confidence, and we’ve got to work extremely hard.” Winter Texans who have seen the program recently have seen a team that has grown and gotten better each year. Tidwell was quick to state that the support from the community – especially those who come from all over the Midwest, where basketball is king, is appreciated. He said that Winter Texans know basketball and to have that type of a crowd follow his team is especially special. “Our Winter Texan fans are some of the most first-class individuals that we have come across,” Tidwell said. “They’re into every game and we’re glad that we can provide them with some fun entertainment a few times a week. We hope to continue to see our Winter Texan section filled up at every home game.”
The name Lipan means “The Light Gray People.” It comes from the Lipan word for a light gray color (kleh-pai) and the word for The People or The Tribe (indeh or ndé). Yet, it is more than just a tribal name, for it contains a code which commemorates the Lipan Apache’s ancient journey from the McKenzie Basin of Canada to their eventual homeland of Texas. The Lipans, and all Apaches, see the Earth as a circle suspended in space at the four points of the compass. Each direction is represented by a color. North
is represented by the color white, East is represented by black, South is represented by blue and west is represented by yellow. When the ancient Lipan Apaches migrated from the north and then moved east into Texas, they were moving from the white of the north toward the black of the east. On a color palette, if you mix a little black with white, you get the color gray. That is why the Lipan Apaches are The Light Gray People- they are the easternmost of all the Apache tribes. Who are the Lipan Apaches?
ROBERT SOTO From pg. 14
four founding chiefs that are the makeup of today’s Lipan Apache tribe. They are a tribe that was nearly annihilated in the nineteenth century. Today the tribe numbers at approximately 4,500 members. Soto has been Indian dancing for nearly 54 years, since he was 8 years old. He has been a Feather Dancer for approximately 45 years and has won many awards for his Indian dancing and artwork in various pow wows throughout the nation. He has been Gourd Dancing for many years and currently is an active member of the Gulf Coast Tia Piah Gourd Dance Society of Houston, Texas. He also plays the Indian Love Flute and has been performing the Eagle Dance and the Hoop
Dance for 37 years. Robert’s dancing is his way of preserving the American Indian culture. When Robert dances, he dances in honor of his ancestors who danced before him, and for the glory and honor of the Lord Jesus Christ, who has given him the opportunity to dance. Robert enjoys his culture and will take every opportunity to share it with others. All of Robert’s Indian outfit was handmade by him - from the beadwork to the featherwork. His outfit goes with him wherever he travels. He, along with the South Texas Indian Dancers, performs about 40 times a year. Source: robertsoto.org

The Lady Vaqueros finished the 201617 season with a 19-14 overall record and 8-6 in the conference. To the joy of the home fans they were 12-4 at home. After beating Stephen F. Austin in the first round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational, UTRGV fell 73-63 to eventual WBI tournament champs Rice University. This year, UTRGV opens its season at 2 p.m. Nov. 10 against Concordia University and at 5 p.m. Nov. 11 against Trinity University in the Islanders Tournament in Corpus Christi. Their first home game is at 7 p.m., Nov. 14 against Texas A&M Corpus Christi at the Edinburg Fieldhouse. Tidwell is excited about the coming year, saying that depth will be a strong point for the team. “Our depth is really going to be good,” Tidwell said. “I think we’ll be able to play 11 or 12 this year, which is important because we’ve got to go hard. We’ve got to be relentless on defense. We’re already trapping, trying to get into the passing lanes and go for steals.” UTRGV immediately showed that athleticism is a strength, as the student-athletes brought a lot of energy and the ability to run up and down the floor. One of the positions up for grabs during the preseason is point guard, a spot at which UTRGV has a plethora of options. “Amara Graham looked good,” Tidwell said. “Shaian Tramble is a natural point guard who really knows how to run the point. Nichele Hyman really got up and down the floor today. Nichele’s going to be a big part of the process whether
she’s at the one, two or three.” Hyman has primarily been a shooting guard during her time at UTRGV, but entered the preseason prepared to run the point. At one point during practice she was asked to slide over to small forward, a position that Hyman hasn’t played before. Still, Hyman handled the challenge well, furthering UTRGV’s all-around depth. UTRGV is also working on determining its forward rotation, with a number of newcomers already stepping up to assist returners such as Megan Johnson, UTRGV’s top returning rebounder at 4.1 per game last season. “I thought Krissy Sampson did a great job of rebounding,” Tidwell said. “Marie-Fatou Gueye will rebound and get back up with the ball real quick. Alicia McCray did some good things. Those three, along with Quynne Huggins, are going to be counted on heavily to go get rebounds because we’re not very big other than Laura Van Tilburg.” General Admission tickets are $7 per home game, $6 for those 65 and older.
