The Call of the Wild
If you’ve just arrived in the Rio Grande Valley, welcome! You’ve arrived just in time for two of my favorite events – the Texas Butterfly Festival in at the National Butterfly Center in Mission and the RGV Birding Festival in Jim Brunson Harlingen. First up is the Texas Butterfly Festival, which kicks of this Saturday, Nov. 4 with a free Community Day, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lots of family-friendly activities are planned. The day actually kicks off at 8 a.m. with the festival’s inaugural Monarch 5K Trail Run and 1K Fun Run. The Fun Run is designed to celebrate the large variety of butterflies found around the Mission Trails outdoor recreational area that is home to the National Butterfly Center, a National Wildlife Refuge Tract and Bentsen-RGV State Park, Headquarters of the World Birding Center. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 5-7, will be jam-packed with field trips allowing participants to explore many sites and hot spots for sighting birds as well as butterflies, all led by guides familiar with the area as well as the wildlife. You may reasonably expect to see more than 60 species in a day, according to the Butterfly Center. Last year, attendees from 23 states and 4 countries registered to experience one of the most biologically-diverse areas in North America, with the assistance of expert guides. The National Butterfly Center and surrounding lands are renowned for a volume and variety of wild, free-flying butterflies that cannot be found anywhere else in the country. Participants can register for the Monarch 5K/1K Run and/or the field trips at www.TexasButterflyFestival.com. Call 956-583-5400 for more information.
RGV Birding Festival
Next up right after the Butterfly Festival is the RGV Birding Festival, a fiveday event, held Nov. 8-12, packed with See FROM THE PUBLISHER pg. 14
Dancing the night away at Trophy Gardens ALAMO – Brenda Taepke started dancing when she was 6 years old, growing up in Michigan. She hasn’t stopped since. In fact, as a Winter Texan living at Trophy Gardens RV Resort in Alamo, Taepke said she dances every day, whether it’s at a nearby resort or park, or at the Riverside Club in Mission or even in Progreso, Mexico – she’s ready to hit the dance floor. “I absolutely love to dance,” she said during Trophy Gardens’ weekly dance, on this night featuring the smooth country voice of Javier Moroles and Sweetwater. “My mother was a wonderful dancer and I get it a lot from her. I took ballet and tap when I was just a young child and just always looked for the opportunity.” Taepke was one of close to 200 attendees doing the waltz, two-step, cha-cha and even a little polka. Visitors brought their own drinks and snacks – some, offering up some tasty creations like a cream cheese, black olive and Miracle Whip mixture on a cracker. On this night See TROPHY GARDENS pg. 10
Neil and Eva Murphy, of Winnipeg, Canada, are in the Halloween spirit while the band Sweetwater performs during the weekly dance at Trophy Gardens RV Resort in Alamo.
Taco Tuesday is hit at Sleepy Valley The Winter Texan season has just begun. We are seeing cars and trucks with Iowa, Minnesota or Quebec license plates. There definitely are signs that the Winter Texans are arriving in the Rio Grande Valley. One of those delicious signs this past Tuesday was a wonderful aroma wafting from the rec hall at Sleepy Valley Resort in Mission. Just the smell of the acclaimed “Best Charro Beans in the Valley” was good enough to at least earn that distinction and be placed on a ballot for voting somewhere. If there are no charro bean competitions around, there should
be.
Held every Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Taco Tuesday at Sleepy Valley is already bringing the Winter Texans in by storm. The previous week there were about 50 to attend the all-you-can-eat treat for $5. On this day, at about 12:40, there were already 108 people served. Yes, Taco Tuesday is a popular event at Sleepy Valley, located at 2301 North Abram Road in Mission. On one Taco Tuesday last year, the four-person team who prepares and serves up the meal, served plates to a little more than 250 people. See TACO TUESDAY pg. 17

Senior Saturdays part of IMAS 50-year celebration
The International Museum of Arts and Science (IMAS) in McAllen has several special exhibits now on display, including two special exhibits. The exhibits include an art exhibit entitled “American Impressionism: Lure of the Artist’s Colony,” and “50 Years: The History of IMAS.” Also currently on display are three other exhibits called “Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice,” “Pure Shape and Color: Geometric Abstract Prints from the IMAS Permanent Collection,” and “Love of Life and Landscape: The Art of Edward E. Nichols.” While the “Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice” exhibit is an interactive display designed to engage the children, adults will also find the exhibit informative and interesting. American Impressionism: Lure of the Artist’s Colony One of many paintings in this display is an oil on canvas titled “February’s Sun.” The snow is untouched, pure and white, settling on the ground in the wooded area. The trees, stripped of all their leaves, cast thin shadows on the snow while their thin trunks and tiny limbs reflect a brownish-yellow haze from this winter’s day morning sun. sam, Chauncey Ryder, Frank W. Benson, Charles Webster Hawthorne, Daniel Garber and Edward Redfield, among others. In addition, American expatriate artist Mary Cassatt will be examined. “American Impressionism: The Lure of the Artists’ Colony” is organized by the Reading Public Museum, Reading, Pa. 50 Years: The History of IMAS There’s more than one exhibit that looks into great eras of the past. IMAS is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with the gallery: “50 Years: The History of IMAS.” This gallery goes through the five decades of IMAS, highlighting the growing permanent collection, a wide range of exhibitions, and the ambitions of the com-
munity-inspired institution. Archival photographs and objects from the vault create a trip through time at IMAS and shows the path the museum followed and continues to follow as it grows. Senior Saturday Along the impressionism lines, the museum also continues to hold its Senior Saturday on the first Saturday of the month from October through April. On Saturday, Nov. 4 to go along with its exhibit on impressionism, there will be a workshop entitled “Art of the Impressionists” where attendees can learn how to texturize acrylic paint, while creating a unique impression-
is a real season, visions of days like that make it seem like yesterday. The “American Impressionism: Lure of the Artist’s Colony” collection of more than 50 works, including landscapes ranging from snow-covered hills to sun-filled harbors, document an important part of American art history, dating from the 1880s through the 1940s. “A lot of our senior citizens and Winter Texans can remember scenes like this See IMAS pg. 5 growing up,” said Jennifer Kanyo, director of education at the museum. “We love when they come here and to listen to them and what they think about these exhibits.” The works, which include 40 oil paintings, capture light and different atmospheres as it takes a tour through different regions including Old Lyme and Cos Cob in Connecticut, Cape Cod in Massachusetts, New Hope and Philadelphia in Pennsylvania and Taos, New Mexico. Within each of these colonies, artists were able to teach, collaborate, and escape the daily rigors of their city studios. Often located in scenic locations within striking distance of major cities, artists’ colonies served up steady doses of natural beauty and provided plenty of subject matter. The International Museum of Art and Science holds several classes and workshops Leading artists of the movement in- where attendees not only will be given a tour of one of the galleries but then will have clude William Merritt Chase, Childe Has- the opportunity to create some form of art – like a painting or drawing.

it was also the Halloween dance and decorations abounded with the orange-andblack themed holiday. Taepke’s attire fit the mood, wearing a black maid’s outfit and an orange wig with long stringy hair. Neil and Eva Murphy, from Winnipeg, Canada, took the opportunity to dress up, Neil donning a long, dark beard and a patriotic bandana with the words “Duck Dy-
nasty” across the front while Eva wore a long frosty blonde wig. Meanwhile, Phill and Susan Hudson, from Dumas, came as glow-in-the dark skeletons with a T-shirt showing the upper body of a skeleton. They also made lime green glow stick glasses, just in case you couldn’t see them with their fluorescent shirts. See TROPHY GARDENS pg. 11
Phill and Susan Hudson, of Dumas, Texas, are nothing but bones – and florescent glow sitck glasses – during the weekly dance at Trophy Gardens RV Resort in Alamo. Saturday’s theme was a Halloween dance.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES TROPHY GARDENS
From pg. 10 Gayle Steinbech and her husband Terry are the park’s activity directors. Gayle said it isn’t out of the ordinary to host 250 dancers on any given Saturday. In fact, the park holds dances all year long and not just during the Winter Texan season – but it’s during the winter season when the fun goes through the roof. “Everyone is just so friendly, and a lot of the people who come aren’t even residents here,” Gayle said. “It feels a lot like a family, everyone giving everybody else hugs.” That is an understatement in the case of Keith Beachy, who lived in Indiana and Michigan before moving to the Valley. “I’m gonna have to get a freight train to bring all these women with me,” he said as the table of about 20 singles (made up of mostly women and Beachy), including Taepke. “We’ll go dancing all over the place, to South Padre Island, anywhere and it’s always me and four of five ladies and you should see the looks.” When Beachy took to the dance floor it wasn’t long before a group of ladies joined in as they all free styled it on the floor, laughed and clearly had a great time. Gayle, the activities director, said she learned a valuable lesson years ago and it has certainly paid off at Trophy Gardens. “Someone told me once that if you please your singles group, you’ll have a successful dance,” she said. “It’s true.’ While Trophy Gardens, located at 800
www.wttrgv.com
FM 495 in Alamo, has its weekly dances, two of the special ones are the New Year’s Eve bash and the Valentine’s dance, which may be a combination celebration of Valentine’s Day and Fat Tuesday, which leads up to Mardi Gras. “People know about our dances from all over, and the bands like it too,” Terry said. “The bands tell us that the acoustics are really good here – I don’t know why, but they are. People love that too.” For more information, visit trophygardens.com or call (956) 787-7717.

From pg. 1 even more field trips, seminars and workshops. The Birding Festival, based out of the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium, will feature over 60 vendors of bird-related products available for every level of birder at the Birders Bazaar. Field trips are listed on a downloadable worksheet at rgvbf.com. There is a $25 registration fee to participate, then there are separate fees for different field trips, seminars and workshops. So you can choose as many as you like. The Kiskadee Pass ($25) will also be offered as a blanket registration to cover all seminars and workshops. There are literally 100 or more field trips to choose from. If you haven’t been birding before, this

is an excellent opportunity to get started with the help of birding experts who are brought in just for this event. You can pick up a birding checklist and record dozens of species in just a few days. But a word of warning: this can be habit forming. If you like being outdoors, you’ll love birding. Birders from all across the country know the Rio Grande Valley is a birder’s paradise that boasts over 500 species of birds that either live in the RGV or migrate annually through the area, due to its geographical location. There’s good reason the Valley has nine different World Birding Centers, each offering it’s own unique habitat and bird species. For more information on the 24th annual Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival, visit rgvbf.org or on Facebook search RGVBF.

BROADWAY From pg. 14
The New York Daily News said the show was a “delicious confection of charm, sparkle and talent...” “There’s no place like home,” as Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz come to the Performing Arts Center on Sunday, Feb. 11. The Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion and Toto (with the Wicked Witch in tow of course) takes their stroll down the Yellow Brick Road for a family-fun evening. Described as a “lavish show featuring breathtaking special effects, dazzling choreography and classic songs,” the stage version of the 1939 film will “blow you away from the moment the tornado touches down and transports you to a dazzling Oz, complete with munchkins and flying monkeys.” Who doesn’t want to see flying monkeys? For those who still love 50s and 60s music, three days after Dorothy and crew go over the rainbow, the Million Dollar Quartet musical will take the stage at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 14. This Tony Award-winning musical tells the true story of the one and only time that rock ‘n roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins came together for a recording session. Along with an irresistible story of betrayal, celebration and broken promises, the music list is filled with timeless hits such as “Blue Suede Shoes,”
“That’s All Right,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “I Walk the Line,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Who Do You Love?,” “Hound Dog” and more. The season rounds out with the intriguing musical story Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story on Wednesday, April 4 and closes with the classical, Tony Award-winning performance, Les Miserables on Wednesday, Sept. 12. For ticket information for any of these spectacular Broadway in McAllen shows, call Live in McAllen at (888) 200-4035 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday or visit www.liveinmcallen.com. Interested parties can also visit the PAC box office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday to purchase individual tickets. The McAllen Performing Arts Center opened Nov. 18, 2016 and immediately brought in a wide variety of nationally recognized productions of music, dance and theater to South Texas. The 93,471-square-foot facility seats approximately 1,800 people on three levels of seating – the main auditorium level, the first balcony level and the upper balcony level. There is also a VIP Lounge in The Tower.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES TACO TUESDAY
From pg. 1 “Every one of us has a job,” said Missouri native Debbie Taylor, who has lived in Sleepy Valley for six years and is the resort activities director. “We work as a team.” People lined up for a bowl of the amazingly tasty charro beans and a plate of crunchy shell tacos. The fixins were lined up on a table where people could add lettuce, cheese, tomato, onion, jalapeno, hot sauce, taco sauce and sour cream to their tacos (some of them added some of it into their beans as well). Joseph Lockhart of Ontario, Canada was sitting at a table, enjoying his first week -ever - as a Winter Texan. He said he was working back home in April when someone walked into his store and said they had just returned from Texas for the winter. Lockhart asked where in Texas, and the response was “Mission.” So he looked up the RV and mobile home park online and said he thought it would be a good fit. He’s the first renter of the year for Sleepy Valley Manager Glenna Clark, in her eighth season managing the park and 11th overall living there. She said that

she is ecstatic about the upcoming year. “We are going to be busy,” she said. “I like to keep my open spaces to under 100 and already we have only 103 remaining. That’s just a wonderful sign and we’re excited about that.” As they get the word out to more folks about their fabulous Taco Tuesday, they may just set all sorts of records for attendance in the park – and for people being served their delicious beans and crispy tacos. To watch a short video that tells the story of the “Best Charro Beans in the Valley,” visit our Facebook Page at Winter Texan Times. And when you stop by next Tuesday to check out their tacos and charro beans, tell ‘em Henry from the Winter Texan Times sent you.

Houston Rockets affiliate RGV Vipers bring pro ball excitement
Many of those who make their home the Rio Grande Valley during the winter months leave some intense basketball-loving areas, especially from the Big 10 market – where the hard court and the gridiron have about the same amount of loyal and rabid fans. It’s easy to spot those Wisconsin, Indiana, Nebraska and Purdue fans, among others, as the basketball season gets underway. Fortunately, basketball is a hot topic in the Rio Grande Valley as well with twotime NBA G-League champion RGV Vipers playing 50 games, 24 of them at home in the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo. Next season they will have a new home – the 8,500-seat Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg – which is now under construction and is scheduled to be completed for next season. Formerly known as the D-League, the league is rebranding itself as the NBA G League following a multi-year partnership with Gatorade. This year, the Vipers will open the season at the Oklahoma City Blue on Nov. 3 before returning to the Valley for their home opener Nov. 6 against a newcomer to the league, probably to the delight of many winter visitors, the Wisconsin Herd.
The Herd, affiliated with the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks, is one of four new teams to the G League this season. The other teams include the Los Angeles Clippers affiliate Agua Caliente Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies affiliate Memphis Hustle and Orlando Magic affiliate Lakeland Magic. The Vipers are an affiliate of the Houston Rockets. In addition to the 24 home games and the 24 away games, the Vipers will play two games in a neutral site as part of the annual NBA G League Showcase in January. Those games will take place at Mississauga, Ontario. All home games for the Vipers will tip-off at 7 p.m. The only exception is the annual Kids Day game Dec. 19 against Canton Charge. That game will tip-off at 11 a.m. Winter Texans may have already bonded with a G League team away from the Valley. Some of those teams could include the Central Division’s Canton Charge, Fort Wayne Mad Ants, Grand Rapids Drive, the Windy City Bulls and the Herd. The Midwest Division also has teams in Winter Texan states such as the Iowa Wolves, the Oklahoma City Blue, the Memphis Hustle and the Sioux Falls Skyforce. See RGV VIPERS pg. 20

NOVEMBER 2, 2017 RGV VIPERS
From pg. 19 “There’s always extra interest when teams from Wisconsin or the Dakotas come in,” said Vipers President and General Manager Bert Garcia. “We love having them come and always have accommodations for them.” All NBA G League prospects – players whose rights are not owned by NBA teams – are free agents and are eligible to be “called up” by an NBA team. More than 30 prospects have been called up in each of the past five seasons. Garcia added that the Winter Texans identify well with not only the Vipers and the teams they have maybe left behind in their home state during winter, but they also know the players and will come out to support, especially Big 10 players. “Basketball is a lot different than a lot of sports in that people will follow a certain player through college and into the pros,” Garcia said. “It’s a lot more of an individual following than a lot of other sports but they also have their favorite teams. We’re always excited to see them come wearing their Iowa shirts or Michigan. They have a good time and we are happy to accommodate them.” Past call-ups have included current NBA standouts Chris Andersen – the league’s first-ever call-up to the Denver Nuggets in 2001 – Danny Green (Reno Bighorns to San Antonio Spurs in 201011), Gerald Green (Los Angeles D-Fenders to New Jersey Nets in 2010-11) and Hassan Whiteside (Iowa Energy to Miami Heat in 2014-15).
WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com
www.wttrgv.com The Vipers had two player call-ups last season. Gary Payton II, son of Gary “The Glove” Payton, who played most of his career with the Seattle Super Sonics, was called up by the Milwaukee Bucks. Isaiah Taylor was called up by the Houston Rockets. Players who have been drafted or whose rights are owned by a certain team – for example the Houston Rockets owning the rights to most of the players on the Vipers – can get assigned to their NBA affiliate.
