You’re Here! Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Vol. 31, No. 3 © 2017-2018 www.wttrgv.com Thursday, November 9, 2017 From the Publisher Our Salute To Veterans
As I look forward to the patriotic Veterans Day events this weekend, I feel deep gratitude for the brave men and women who have served our country valiantly, defending freedom and liberty. This nation has refused Jim Brunson to allow tyrannical despots to destroy the freedom of our people, or that of our friends and allies. This weekend we not only honor those who served valiantly in past wars, but also our sons and daughters and grandchildren who have stepped forward to serve their country, to protect their families, friends and, yes, even millions of people they never met so they may enjoy the freedom to live happy lives, enjoying the blessings of this great nation. Our warriors deserve the honor and respect of a grateful nation that could not preserve our beloved freedoms if it were not for their sacrifices. We are most grateful for those who gave their lives, and we share the sadness and loss with the families who lost their sons, daughters, husbands, wives or fathers and mothers in so great a cause. While most of us have never experienced the terror of war first hand, it is important that we hear the stories of those who have to help us understand the cost, the price of freedom and liberty, and that we must never yield to any enemy – from without or within – who would take our freedoms away. I extend a special salute to our Winter Texan defenders of freedom who have served our country. In today’s edition of the Winter Texan Times we bring you the story of Dave Cole, a Vietnam veteran, who served in an era when our military was not respected or appreciated as they should have been. Yet, he served – and many, many others like him – risking his life for freedom, answering the call of his country in performing the duty he was asked to perform. Thank you Dave Cole. Thank you to all our veterans. God bless you and God bless America!
Vet recalls close calls in Vietnam
“So I went down and enlisted.” Cole ended up in the Army Security Agency, a part of the military he said that they couldn’t talk much about because they were trained by the National Security Agency, where everything was top secret. They even changed the name to Radio Research - “then we went to Vietnam,” he said. Cole spent four years in the Army, 18 of those months in Vietnam. He was part of a group that made sure communications were secure and leaks were not transmitted. They would use descramblers in the field so they could talk normally, without using code upon code to
Dave Cole
Dave Cole is a Vietnam War vet who has seen a lot of things to say the least. His story is one of a man who was looking for something – and it wasn’t to be an accountant. Cole is from Grand Island, Neb. In 1966 he had just finished his first year in college and didn’t want to go back – the accounting life wasn’t something he could see in his future. And he couldn’t imagine what he might see in that near future, but a phone call started him on a different path. “My best friend’s dad was the president of the draft board and he told me ‘Dave, dad says your name is coming up on the draft board,” said Cole, who resides at Texas Trails RV Resort in Pharr.
At the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, an armistice was agreed to in 1918, ending World War I. That moment, 99 years ago, was called Armistice Day and subsequently in 1919 became a solemn, patriotic occasion honoring all those Americans who fought in what was called “The Great War.” It became a national observance in 1938.
On June 1, 1954, the U.S. Congress changed the word “Armistice” in the 1938 law to “Veterans” and urged the nation to additionally honor those on Nov. 11 who served during World War II and the Korean Conflict. And now, the national holiday honors all those who have been in military service. This month many communities in the
Rio Grande Valley will be honoring the veterans in their communities with programs along with a few parades. Citizens are encouraged to attend a program along with all military veterans. Veterans War Memorial of Texas One of the first programs will be in
Halloween marks the start of the social season at many of the larger parks in the Rio Grande Valley and Victoria Palms is no exception. Early arriving Winter Texans joined year-round residents by showing up in costumes and dancing the night away to the music of Danica for the park’s Halloween bash. Costumes ranged from witches to warlocks, and a variety of colorful costumes including a “molting rooster” who kept losing his tail feathers, and a pink bunny reminiscent of the Energizer Bunny. Park Manager Lori Fanaselle said the party is always the beginning of the new season. Age was no deterrent to the fun as 97-year-old Lorraine Johnson arrived dressed as a Good Witch. She was escorted by her daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Marshall Vytlas. Originally from See HALLOWEEN BASH pg. 11
Winners of the Halloween Bash costume competition included John and Janine St. Jean (at left), second place; 97-year-old Lorraine Johnson as a Good Witch and her son-inlaw Marshall Vytlas as the joker (center), first place; and Wayne and Sharon Blindaver as a beekeeper and pot of flowers, third place (at right).

‘A Touch of Frost’ symphony concert planned
Special traditions seem to brighten the holiday season and help usher in the spirit of Christmas. One such tradition is the annual Valley Symphony Orchestra’s annual holiday concert. “A Touch of Frost” will take place Friday, Nov. 17, 8 p.m., at the McAllen Performing Arts Center, 801 Convention Center Blvd. This is one of two concerts during the Valley Symphony Orchestra’s concert season that will feature the Valley Symphony Chorale, directed by Dr. David Means. The chorale is made up of more than 120 professional vocalists who will perform repertoire joined with the orchestra as well as without accompaniment. The program will include contemporary favorites as Williams’ “Somewhere in My Memory” heard in classic holiday movies such as “Home Alone,” to classical favorites such as “Gloria in Excelsis” by Antoni Vivaldi. Under the direction of Dr. Peter Dabrowski, the Valley Symphony Orchestra produces five classical concerts and one POPS concert each season. This year, the symphony will enhance each concert experience with added production to showcase music. Performances showcase the talents of 92 professionally trained local
musicians. Dabrowski is not only the music director and conductor of the Valley Symphony Orchestra, he is also the associate conductor of the Chicago Chamber Orchestra. Throughout his career, he has served many organizations, including as music director and conductor of the American University Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., the American Youth Concert Orchestra in Northern Virginia, and the Chicago Philharmonic. He is in demand as a guest conductor throughout Europe and the United States. He studied conducting at Northwestern University, the University of Utah, and the Warsaw Music Conservatory in Poland. He also participated in prestigious conducting courses at the Tanglewood Music Center, the Aspen Music Festival, and in Budapest and Miskolc, Hungary. “A true concert leaves the audience and musicians on the edge of their chairs,” Dabrowski said. His interpretations, filled with great expression, intrigue and excitement are done to create emotion moving through the audience. “As a conductor I must convey my interpretations with authority,” he said. “The final interpretations are not only the result of rehearsals, but are also due to

My goal is to combine the intensity and many talents of the musicians into one orchestral voice.” The Valley Symphony Orchestra has been performing for 66 years, founded in 1952 at what is now UTRGV in Edinburg as an orchestra of volunteer musicians. The symphony’s mission, according to its website “is to improve life in a diverse community through artistic excellence in the performance and preservation of great
music. This mission will be achieved through excellence in the live performances of great music as we strive to engage, inspire, and educate the populations of the Rio Grande Valley.” Single tickets for “A Touch of Frost” range from $38 to $58. Costa Messa Has It All!
Amazingly Delicious Food, Great Dining Atmosphere and Wide Selection If you ever read something like, “My friend arrived late,” I can tell you how the story ends - “I ate too much.” This week I visited Costa Messa, – a wonderful Mexican restaurant with three McAllen locations. I visited the one at 5248 N. 10th St., McAllen. I love this place and was meeting a friend for lunch – but my friend arrived late.... you know how this ends. I love salsa – and at Costa Messa they brought a variety of salsas with their chips. I also dug into amazing grilled jalapenos. I’m a six-time hot-pepper eating contest winner but I’m older now – I like to taste my food. These peppers had a kick, but the flavor was also intense. I ordered the choriqueso as an appetizer, a beautiful mix of melted cheese and chorizo. I especially love these with the fresh corn tortillas served with them. After chips and salsa, a chile toreado (the jalapeno) and three choriqueso tacos, I was content. I ignored being content and ordered the Fajita al Chipotle, super tender fajita strips grilled with onions, bell peppers and topped with a spicy chipotle sauce. The grilled onions carried a tantalizing taste from the chipotle, and the juices from the meat. This meal is enough for two people. I couldn’t finish it. The food and service is amazing, the way you want to be treated when you go out to eat. My buddy ordered La Plancha – and after the first bite into it he said, “This is how fajita should be made.” He’s a much tougher critic than me. General Manager Art DeLeon brought a couple of plates to show what’s most popular with the Winter Texans, who are regular visitors. One was the Mexican plate, a delicious meal consisting of two enchiladas, a taco and chalupa, served with rice and beans. Costa Messa has a wide variety of delicious meals to choose from. So, if someone in your party doesn’t want Mexican food there’s plenty to choose from, including steaks, shrimp, chicken, pork chops, fish and soups and salads. The atmosphere is excellent and the food is a dining delight. Just be careful that you don’t eat too much. It’s so tempting, but it was worth every last bite.

RALLY
From pg. 5 This year, Judi decided to organize a destination rally to Victoria Palms for other Coachman owners who might not know about the Rio Grande Valley. Judi explained that a destination rally is a rally where participants go to one location and try to visit as many of the sights in the area as possible. In the spring Judy planned the rally to Victoria Palms and about 25 residents from other areas of the country decided to participate. They represented Arizona, Illinois, Kansas, Georgia, North Carolina, Connecticut, Ohio and Texas. “None of those attending the rally had ever been to the Rio Grande Valley before,” McClellan said. “It is my hope that some of them may want to come back and spend a part of the winter down here.” Judi planned a variety of activities for them including a visit to South Padre Island for dinner and a ride on the pirate boat. They also visited Quinta Mazatlan, the World Birding Center’s McAllen location and the Riverside Dreamer pontoon boat in Mission. They also made a visit to Javier’s Wine Estate in western Hidalgo County.
McClellan said the people were taken to sites on the park’s bus. Although the resort’s restaurant was not officially open for the season yet, it catered the meals for the rally. Participants have one day off during the weeklong rally and some were planning to travel to Corpus Christi, while others were planning to tour the Basilica, McClellan said. Of course, participants were allowed to take part in activities at the resort including the Halloween Bash. John and Janine St. Jean of Surprise, Ariz., were second-place winners in the Halloween Costume Contest, dressing as Hershey bars, one plain and one full of nuts! McClellan said participants had commented on how friendly the people of the Rio Grande Valley were toward them and how they welcomed them. Many had visited Florida and Arizona and found the people there more reserved. They were enjoying the open friendly attitude of Val ley residents.

American Spire Of Honor The American Spire of Honor stands at the center of Veteran’s War Memorial of Texas.
VETERANS HONORED From pg. 1
McAllen at the Veterans War Memorial of Texas at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, which will feature those who served during World War II. There will be a special section for the WWII vets as part of the recognition. There are slightly more than a half-million WWII veterans still alive, according to Jan Hartzog, war memorial publicity director. The program is being held a day earlier than usual to allow for school children to be bused to the 3.5-acre event site off 29th Street, just north of Expressway 83. Singer Stephen Lopez will open the program with the National Anthem. The college student, who has been singing at the Veterans Day program since he was eleven, will later offer another musical selection from the 1940s war era. The McAllen High School Band and Choir will be providing special music including songs from the 40s. The RGV Quilting Guild will be represented by the Green Bee Quilt group from Green Gate Grove in Mission, with members presenting an honor quilt to a veteran. McAllen Mayor Jim Darling will be the keynote speaker. Retired Army Col. Frank Plummer, who was instrumental in establishing the war memorial nearly 20 years ago, is expected to speak about plans for the new “Pathway for Life,” which will be composed of engraved bricks and pavers containing the history of WWII veterans and their families. The pathway is to be located in front of a new Children’s Plaza of American history where there will be 38 walls of stories written by children involving historic moments.
www.wttrgv.com Alamo Program Alamo’s program begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and will be held at the Veterans Memorial Plaza, which was dedicated a year ago, and is located adjacent to Farias Elementary School on Alamo Road. The family of Army Sgt. Fernando De La Rosa, who died in a roadside bombing on Oct. 27, 2009 in Afghanistan and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, will be guests of honor. The family is to receive an honor quilt made by the Sew Sew Sisters from Royal Palms Park in Alamo. Keynote speaker for the occasion is Hidalgo County Judge Ramon Garcia. The PSJA Memorial High School Jr. ROTC color guard is scheduled to participate along with a high school choir. Pharr Parade In Pharr, a parade is planned for 4:30 p.m. on Saturday that starts at the corner of Polk Avenue and goes south on Cage Boulevard to PSJA Stadium. A program following the parade will be held at the American Legion Hall of Post 101, located on Cage Boulevard. Later, around 7 p.m., a fireworks display will be launched from the grounds of Liberty Middle School, 1212 South First St. San Benito Parade and Ceremony San Benito has a full morning of activities on Saturday to honor women in the military, starting with an 8:50 a.m. parade that is expected to include many school children marching along the route from City Hall to the Veterans War Memorial, 151 Rowson St. Leading the parade down Sam Houston Boulevard will be the San Benito High School Jr. ROTC. The ceremony honoring veterans will follow with La Encantada Elementary students performing the “National Anthem” and “God Bless America.” Keynote speaker is to be Janice Whitehead, a Vietnam-era veteran, who served as a U.S. Army nurse and then continued in a civilian life career as a pediatric nurse. Other women military veterans to be featured include Edith Clark and Laura Vela. One of the best known local women in the military is Wilma “Dolly” Vinsant Shea, a World War II flight nurse and after whom the Dolly Vinsant Memorial Hospital was named when it opened in San Benito in 1949. The San Benito native enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps in 1942 and after rigorous training was sent to England in early 1943 where she flew on evacuation flights of wounded soldiers back to England from battle zones in Europe. Sometimes she flew between England and the U.S. with her the only medical person on board to tend the wounded. On her final sortie beyond the allotted maximum hazardous-flight quota, the evacuation plane with wounded Americans on board was shot down over Germany on April 14, 1945. The lieutenant, who received a number of medals including a posthumous Purple Heart and a special citation from President Truman, was buried in a U.S. Military Cemetery in the Netherlands.
NOVEMBER 9, 2017 17 www.wttrgv.com
Harlingen Program In Harlingen, a program is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at the War Memorial in Pendleton Park, 1425 Morgan Blvd., which will also pay special tribute to women in the military. The keynote speaker will be Chief Petty Officer Teresita Garcia from the U.S. Naval Reserve, and Lenore Combs, who served with the U.S. Air Force. The ceremony will include a combined color guard of veterans carrying flags of the different military branches. Veterans attending also will be recognized during the music for each service group.
Marine Military Academy Parade The Marine Military Academy, 320 Iwo Jima Blvd., near Harlingen International Airport, will be staging a full-dress parade in honor of veterans at 10 a.m. Saturday on the Battalion Grounds. Immediately following the parade’s conclusion, a flag retirement ceremony will be held behind the famed Iwo Jima statue. Brownsville’s observance was marked by a parade last Saturday. Carlos Cascos was the selected marshal for the Southmost Veterans Parade. A luncheon was served for the area’s honorees and veterans.
Wolrd War I This bronze relief is just one of dozens of granite and bronze walls at the Veterans War Memorial of Texas in McAllen that bring to life the history of our hard-fought wars and the heroes who defended freedom.

From pg. 1 get messages delivered. “We could talk openly, the descrambler made it so we could talk but they couldn’t hear our communication, even if they were on the same channel we were on,” he said. “They would just hear static. We did some work where we went out with units and watched the Ho Chi Minh Trail and we would call in air strikes or troop strikes when there was troop or supply movement. That way we could get it quicker; we didn’t have to worry about remembering all the terminology.” Cole said back then – he enlisted in June 1966 – nobody knew what the Secret Service was and the Army Security Agency was similar. After enlisting, however, he knew that a neighbor in his hometown had been part of the same organization. One day, Cole approached him with curiosity and asked questions to help enlighten him for what he had in store. But it was critical that nobody knew who was in the top intelligence agencies to keep them from being a bigger target. “Even the recruiters didn’t know what the Secret Service was,” Cole said. “When I asked my neighbor about that he looked at me like he was dumbfounded and was like ‘what are you talking about?’” During those 18 months in Vietnam, Cole said he became a believer that “the Good Lord was watching over me at least three times.” The first of those was one day as he and a small unit were heading to their battal-
www.wttrgv.com ion with critical classified documents that needed to be delivered. While speeding along Highway 1 (“I didn’t know there was a speed limit on Highway 1” Cole said jokingly), an MP stopped Cole’s jeep to check out identification. “They stopped us and when I explained what I was doing, they were going to let me go,” Cole said. “Before they let us go a deuce and a half truck went around us.” A deuce and a half truck was first manufactured for Vietnam. It was a vehicle that was constructed quickly, could be transported en masse on a Navy ship and would be used primarily to transport troops. “The truck got 200 yards in front of us and hit a mine in the middle of the road,” Cole said. “Those boys were killed. It was command detonated and we saw the VC running out across the rice patties and they did get him. “That was my first one.” The strikes continued on the North Vietnamese’s supplies and troops along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, which was actually a series of trails that the North Vietnamese used as a route for its troops, weapons, food and equipment to get into the South. Finally they realized how the strikes were happening with such frequency. “We were out there too long and they knew we were there because of too many direct hits and they started looking for us,” Cole said. “One night they scaled a cliff where we were and one of them ran between the bunker I was in and the bunker beside me. To this day I say he had to be left-handed because the threw

the satchel charged to the left. If he had thrown it to the right, I wouldn’t be here. “That was my second one.” The night was a long one of combat. Cole said it’s during those times that you just don’t have time to be scared or think about anything but survival. “You didn’t have time to think about things when you were in combat,” he said. “You might think about it after – that’s when you might get scared.” The third was filled with bittersweet emotions. While sitting in the operations center and teletyping, he received a message asking where Dave Cole was. “I said ‘talking to you.’ They said I was supposed to be in Saigon processing out to go home but the orders never got from the battalion to where we were. The next day they brought a replacement and I started heading to Saigon. That night the camp got run over and two or three of the guys in my group got killed in the attack. I never found out who. “I said that was my time to leave.” Cole returned to the states and left the Army in June 1970, four years after enlisting. He went back to college and earned his degree – in accounting. “I still didn’t want to be an accountant,” he said. Cole ended up being a produce buyer for a large chain similar to H-E-B, called Nash Finch and they had several locations all through the Midwest. He worked there until he brought his dad for a vacation visit to the Valley. “We came down after my mom passed away, and while I was playing golf he
bought a place down here,” Cole said. “I’ve been down here ever since – 16 years and this is home.” Cole tells the story of Vietnam in a calm and professional way, like telling somebody about a movie he just watched. There is little emotion, it’s just matter of fact. But when he talks about what he calls one of the best experiences he ever had since returning from Vietnam, even he can’t hold back choking up ever so slightly. “Some friends of ours and us went up to San Antonio to the Alamo. Me and my buddy were sitting on one of the benches and this young lady came up to me, probably 10 or 11 years old, and thanked me for being a vet,” Cole said. “She asked me if I was a hero. I told her no. I said if your parents ever get a chance to take you to Washington, D.C. and see the Memorial, those are the heroes.” Cole said living in the Valley has been an overwhelmingly positive time in his life. “The people in the Valley thank me more for my service than anywhere I’ve been all my life – at home I never got thanked but here it’s the young people and the older people. Everyone. “When my dad passed away, he told me on the last day he was alive – ‘son, don’t ever leave the Valley. You have more friends and family here than you will ever have anywhere else.’ “I found this place with my dad. This is home.”
