Many parks with new or improved ‘toys’ for Winter Texans
There are new “toys” to welcome Winter Texans back at many parks and resorts across the Rio Grande Valley this year. From new cooks and paved roads to amenities for furry friends, Winter Texan parks are investing in their property and welcoming back their guests with several improvements. Residents of Pine to Palm RV Resort in Weslaco have brand new shuffleboard courts waiting to be broken in, as well as new two pickleball courts that were added due to the demands of that rapidly growing sport. “We completely redeveloped our recreational court,” said Park Manager Gretchen Hovda. “We have a huge demand for shuffleboard but pickleball is growing rapidly so we decided to build two courts for our residents who enjoy it.” Pickleball is played on a miniature sized tennis court and is a mixture of tennis, badminton and ping pong. According to the USA Pickleball Association, there
are more than 15,000 indoor and outdoor pickleball courts in the United States, with at least one court in all 50 states. The organization estimates that there are more than 2.5 million pickleball players in the country and it is exploding in popularity. “It is the fastest growing sport in North America right now,” said Claude Bru, a Pine to Palm resident for 13 years. “I started playing in Winnipeg six years ago and love the new courts.” Bru and two other couples introduced the sport to the park, which has 224 RV spaces and 222 mobile home lots. He said there are about 30 active pickleball members in the park and now that the courts are open that he expects that number to grow on a regular basis. The park invested approximately $240,000 to remove the old shuffleboard courts and put in 20 new shuffleboard courts and the two pickleball courts. “We have planned for this for a while See NEW OR IMPROVED pg. 18
The hills are alive with the sounds of music, or in the case of the Rio Grande Valley, it is the South Texas plains that are more alive now with music than at any time of the year as a season of concerts
begins. The musical organizations, ranging from barbershop choruses to symphony orchestras, are populated with lots of Winter Texans along with most of those
Pine to Palm resident Dave Gemmell enjoys playing on one of the two new pickleball courts at the resort, which also built 20 new shuffleboard courts for residents.

attending the performances. Among those preparing for a season of music now is the Magic Valley Chorus (MVC) of the Sweet Adelines International, directed by Sandy Seitz, a full-time Victoria Palms Park resident in Donna, who came to the Valley in 1999 after being part of a chorus for many years in Racine, Wisc. Seitz, who is also an accomplished accordionist since learning at age 9, adds to the educational process by throwing in a little bit of technical music theory during rehearsals. For the full-time Valley residents and the now-arriving Winter Texans, who make up about half of the chorus, a rigorous schedule of activities mark rehearsals being held Monday evenings at the Village of Westlakes clubhouse in McAllen. The three-hour rehearsals start with physical and vocal warmups, then into standing through sets of songs to be learned for the upcoming shows. Helping to keep everything organized
is Janet Doyle, the team leader for the past 10 years and often the emcee for performances. For the past 20 years she has been with the chorus, which was formed in November 1990; in 1991 it did its first annual show and went to its first regional competition. Most members come from communities from Mission to Weslaco, according to Secretary Joan Felton, a permanent resident at Royal Palms Park in Alamo. Having the Winter Texans is special. “We love them and welcome them,” she added. The local award-winning chorus had its first concert of this season, a Veterans Day salute on Nov. 10 at a Mission resort park. Shirley Valentine, who handles bookings, said other public concerts include Christmas at the Tower (Theater) in Weslaco, 3 p.m. Dec. 1-3; the chorus’ annual appearance at the Hidalgo Festival of Lights at 8 p.m. Dec. 5; St. George Church International Festival in Pharr at See SEASON OF CONCERTS pg. 14

Pine To Palm’s Bissillions among top shuffleboarders
Gina and Brian Bissillion haven’t had a chance to find their favorite shuffleboard court at Pine to Palm Resort in Weslaco. Chances are, they won’t. “We’re more likely to have an unfavorite than a favorite,” joked Gina. “We’re glad though about the new courts here. They’re really nice.” Pine to Palm Resort renovated its activity area for residents. The park completely removed the 24 shuffleboard courts that had been in place for 40 years and built 20 new shuffleboard courts and two pickleball courts, complete with new lighting, over the summer. Park Manager Gretchen Hovda kept residents informed on the progress through regular emailed newsletters. The park not only saw an increasing demand for pickleball, but it has a large and competitive group of residents when it comes to shuffleboard. The Bissillions are just two of the several players who are considered good enough to play at the international level from the park. In fact, the Bissillions competed in July in the International Shuffleboard World Team Championships for Canada (West). The women’s team finished second, behind USA (East) and ahead of the United Kingdom in third. The men finished third, behind only the USA (East) and Brazil in
first and second, respectively. The competition was a week-long event. The event hosts teams from all around the world including Germany, Holland, China and others. If a country doesn’t have enough to put together a team, the association will create a team called the U.N. team. Teams qualify based on their resume and accomplishments throughout their career. The men’s team was made of up park residents Brian Bissillion, Earl Doell and Peter Hilderbrand, and Doug Cowling from Ranchero Village in Weslaco. The women’s team had residents Gina Bissillion, Eileen Hilderbrand and Carol Klem, plus Marlene Cowling from Ranchero Village. Most recently, the Bissillions finished third in the Don Johnk Memorial Expert Mixed Doubles Tournament at Leisure World in Weslaco. They finished behind park residents – and Canadian teammates – Doell and Klem. “There are some great shuffleboarders in the Valley, that’s for sure,” Brian said. “Plus you meet so many great people, people from all over the world at the World Doubles event.” The Bissillions have played all over the world and have played on many different See SHUFFLEBOARDERS pg. 5

Bit-O-Heaven holds craft sale
Christmas is coming soon and craft sales are often a great source for people seeking gifts for that hard-to-buy-for person who has everything. Even when not seeking Christmas gifts, craft sales are always fun to attend. Bit-O-Heaven RV Park in Donna held its monthly craft show On Friday, Nov. 10, and offered several sources of unique gifts of fun items to furnish Valley homes. T-shirts are often popular wear among Winter Texans, who enjoy the warm weather in the Rio Grande Valley. Kathy Webber had a great variety of shirts with Valley themes such as “Winter Texan for Life,” for those wishing to advertise ¬– or maybe brad a little – that they are vacationing in the warm Valley. She also offered specialized themes such as the one for quilters, “Quilter for Life,” a hobby many women (and men) enjoy during their leisure time. She had too many themes to list so look for her table at next month’s craft sale. Rosie Armstrong had a table filled with clothes that fit the very popular American girl dolls. Many Winter Texans have granddaughters or great granddaughters just the age to play with American Girl dolls. The clothes Rosie was offering were much less expensive than those listed in the American Girl catalog. Roger Ruggles of AR Creations had
WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com
www.wttrgv.com a table filled with all sorts of handmade pens. Some were outstanding because of the woods used such as olive wood from Bethlehem or the local mesquite tree. Others were outstanding because of the symbols on them such as anchor designed to appeal to boaters and Navy veterans. Pens come in thick and thin sizes. Ruggles also featured wooden rippers that he said were popular with the quilters in the Rio Grande Valley. The ripper part is fashioned from stainless steel and is set in a variety of types of wood. It would make a great gift for a seamstress back home who has every piece of sewing equipment possible as this is a unique ripper few others would have. If that special person on your list does not like to write and is not a quilter, there were also pill cases and toothpick holders. There were several tables of jewelry, but Betty Miller was offering snap jewelry. She sold magnetized bracelets and necklaces. Because they were magnetized instead of glued, the buttons could be popped out and replaced with another one. Of course, she had an array of buttons in all colors with varying amounts of decorations. Purchasers could buy one bracelet and a dozen buttons and have a different colored bracelet to match each of their outfits.
Arne Hole was offering a variety of woodwork items for sale. New this year were cremation boxes for pets or people. Another woodworker, Milton Voss, sold ornately decorated clocks. Barbara Humphrey had some wood crafts, but also had gourds which had been painted to look like Christmas ornaments. Artis Jensen offered crocheted items. There were several tables of tools de-
signed to provide just what tinkering Winter Texans might need. And “Spiffy Cliffy” Spears had a table filled with waterless carwash products. For those looking for unique gifts for Christmas or giving at other times, the Bit-O-Heaven Craft Sale is held the second Friday of the month from 8 a.m. to noon. Breakfast items are offered early in the morning.
New wardrobes for American Girl dolls Rosie Armstrong displayed new wardrobe items designed to fit the popular American Girl dolls many Winter Texan’s granddaughters have.
Ornate handmade clocks Milton Voss shows the ornate handmade clocks with wooden scrolling he has for sale.

Courts are rated based on their ing shuffleboard tournaments in the Rio draw speed. The ones around the Valley Grande Valley, visit https://rgvsa.weebly. are usually about eight seconds – which com/ means it takes that amount of time from the time it leaves the shuffleboard cue until it stops. There was a court in California that the Bissillions played on where the draw took 20-to-22 seconds. “All you had to do was touch the disc ever so slightly and it would go,” Brian said. “The court was so slick. I had one disc stop and then it slid again after a full stop. I just couldn’t figure those out. Some use beads, some use wax on the court. There are a lot of different types of courts.” Gina said that players also need to be able to read the courts. An avid golfer with a low handicap, Gina likens it to reading the breaks on the golf course greens. “There are subtle breaks on the courts that you need to see. Is my disc going to go this way or that,” she said. “You play with a lot more finesse and strategy than a lot of people think.” Competitors gain points based on how they finish in tournaments. Reaching 1,000 points is a huge milestone. Gina, who was inducted into the Rio Grande Valley Shuffleboard Association Hall of Fame this year, has 975 points and should reach that mark this season. Brian is at 900. The Camille Playhouse, located at 1 Dean Porter Park (across from the Gladys Porter Zoo) in Brownsville, will present the musical drama of Judy Garland’s “comeback” during Christmastime in 1968. Entitled “End of the Rainbow,” the show will be performed at 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Nov. 17 and 18, and Sunday, Nov. 19 at 2:30 p.m. With failed marriages, suicide attempts and addiction behind her, Garland has scheduled a six-week booking at London’s Talk of the Town. At 46 and with new flame Mickey Deans at her side, she seems determined to carry it off and recapture her magic. But lasting happiness always eludes some people, and there was never any answer to the question with which Judy ended every show: “If happy little blue-

Ann’s Restaurant
I rarely ever order chicken fried anything from anywhere. I generally am not a fan. That being said, I’ve never had anything that was cooked up in Ann’s Restaurant, located on Highway 83 in San Juan, that was anything less than delicious. Those two statements were getting challenged. As my daughter Camilla and I walked into Ann’s we were greeted warmly – owner Nadia Baughman and staff are terrific. We grabbed a table along the wall where a large map covered with pushpins show where people have lived and

have visited – as expected, pins are dense in South Texas and the Midwest. Winter Texans love this place. Why wouldn’t they? The food is always cooked fresh and to order. You can even see owner Nadia Baughman tinkering in the kitchen, making sure everything is cooked as if she were at her own house. You want the taste of home? It’s here. Camilla and I each ordered a breakfast taco to start. This Valley breakfast staple was probably 1.5 times the size of a normal taco with nearly twice as much filling. Both the chorizo and egg for Camilla and the ham, egg and cheese for me were fresh, cooked perfectly and the homemade tortillas were probably the best we’ve eaten in a long time. There’s just something about home cooking. Afterwards, I ordered the chicken fried chicken. Battered in a thin wash, the outside had a great flavor with the panko crumbs prominent. The chicken breast was thin but spread over half the plate and was cooked carefully, getting it away from the heat before any chance of drying. Covered in white gravy with pepper, I was able to easily slice through the piece. In fact, I could use a fork. I think many places put way too much pepper on their gravy for this dish, and for the mashed potatoes. If I want more, I can put more – don’t overdo it. This one was peppered just right. The mashed potatoes were creamy and with the gravy it was a perfect combination with the chicken and buttery corn and toast. There’s plenty to order at Ann’s, including Mexican plates, burgers, salads.... and I’ve stayed away from chicken fried anything. I don’t think I’ll be a stranger to it anymore. It’s terrific – and it’s a lunch special on Fridays so what more could you ask. Ann’s Restaurant is located at 221 W. U.S. Highway 83 in San Juan. If you enjoy homestyle cookin’, you’ve got to try Ann’s Restaurant.

SEASON OF CONCERTS From pg. 1
11 a.m. Dec. 9; the Westlakes Community Christmas event in McAllen at 6 p.m. Dec. 16, and the combined “Music for All Ages” concert show at the Center Church in Pharr at 7 p.m. March 2, 2018. Dee Fritsch, a Winter Texan hailing from Buffalo, N.Y., and staying at Bentsen Grove Park in Palmview, has been singing bass for 20 years with MVC, which comes on top of 36 years with a Buffalo chorus. She noted her husband, Jack, is a barbershop singer in two choruses as well. Fritsch enjoys being in the chorus, including the educational part as she doesn’t read music, but has been helped to find ways around that, including using technology to work on songs. The fellowship is special to the couple including the international flavor that created a long-lasting friendship with a Swedish couple they met during a competition. “You can travel anywhere and find help and support through the Sweet Adelines,” Fritsch said. “It’s one huge family.” She is also the reason that Judy McCullough, a Winter Texan in Alamo’s Royal Palms Park who this summer moved to Warsaw, Mo., is part of the chorus. McCullough was looking for a barbershop opportunity and found it in 2004, when she met Fritsch across the border in Mexico, a year after coming to the Val-
ley. McCullough said she was raised with music, her parents and brother singing and playing instruments after chores were over for the day on the family dairy farm in Kansas. The only singing part left for her was to harmonize. Later she sang five years in Topeka, Kan. with a group called the New Life Singers. In addition to McCullough singing bass in the MVC, McCullough plays a variety of instruments including the trumpet, piano, organ, accordion, bass and steel guitars. For the past two years she’s played the trumpet with the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Concert Band as third chair and with the smaller Winter Texan Orchestra. RGV Concert Band When the combined concert comes next March, McCullough will have two parts, singing with the MVC and playing trumpet with the RGV Concert Band. Gene Goede, who was a band director for 33 years, has been conducting the RGV Band for the past 10 years. The band, which began with just a dozen players back in 1997, is made up primarily of Winter Texans from 17 states along with a few from Canada. The band now numbers between 55 and 65 musicians, which still includes a few charter members. Goede was a band director in Minnesota public schools before coming to the Valley 26 years ago. The Minneapolis area resident, who has toured the world See SEASON OF CONCERTS pg. 15

with his music, joined the band in December 1998, 10 months after it was formed. In addition to his conducting, Goede has also been a member of the McAllen Symphonic Band/Wind Ensemble for the past 12 years. He noted 10 performers are still in the workforce, but the rest include retirees from all walks of life – some former band directors, and others who love to play an instrument in creating old time “concert in the park” type music. One of those who hadn’t played her baritone sax since high school, is Linda Ingram, a registered

nurse from Smithville, Tenn. and staying at Lemon Tree Estates in Mission. She joined in 2007 and is the band’s secretary. In preparing for the RGV Band’s series of winter concerts, rehearsals are held at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1105 West Fern Ave. in McAllen, on Saturday mornings. The schedule involves seven or eight Sunday concerts a season. The band starts with a Christmas concert each year at the Lutheran church rehearsal site, which will be 3 p.m. Dec. 10. The rest of the all Sunday concerts, all at 3 p.m., include Aladdin Villas West in Mission on Jan. 1, 2018; First Presbyterian Church, Mission, Jan. 21; Alamo Palms Park in Alamo, Feb. 4; Snow to Sun Park in Weslaco, Feb. 18; Casa Del Valle Park in

Alamo, March 4 and Paradise Resort Estates in Pharr, March 11. And on March 2 is the 7 p.m. combined concert at Center Church in Pharr. Magic Valley Men of A-Chord Another group taking part in the combined “Music for All Ages” show is the Magic Valley Men of A-Chord, a group of 40 to sometimes 60 barbershoppers, co-directed by Bob Lemkuil, from Neenah, Wisc., and Herb Edwards, from McComb, Ill.. Lemkuil, who stays at Aladdin Villas in Mission, has been with the chorus for 20 years and has been directing for six seasons, while Edwards, at Americana Resort in Mission, is in his third year of directing. Edwards, who retired in 2008,
said the men are drawn together by the fact, “All of us love music and we get to entertain an audience once a week.” Dennis Bush, president of the Men of A-Chord and a permanent McAllen resident, has been with the chorus for 20 years, although he has been singing barbershop for 40 years. His singing included a part in an award-winning quartet, “Vocal Majority,” while living in Dallas, and another group in Beaumont. “We need men who like to sing,” Bush said. The local group started in 1992, with only eight guys and have become known for their red vests and bow ties. Many of the singers hold membership in the interSee SEASON OF CONCERTS pg. 17

The former elementary music and high school choir director for 29 years in Minnesota, has been leading the Ambassadors for the past 10 seasons. The Ambassadors were launched more than 30 years ago by 12 men from Bentsen Grove Resort in Mission who just wanted to sing. The chorus now numbers around 45, the majority Winter Texans, who have begun rehearsals on Friday afternoons at Bentsen Grove. NEW OR IMPROVED
From pg. 1 because we know how much our residents enjoy these activities,” Hovda said. “The previous shuffleboard courts had been used for 40 years so it was time.” Bit-O-Heaven RV and Mobile Home Park in Donna, with nearly 700 RV spaces and 155 mobile home lots completed two major projects over the summer, adding a remote control racing track and a fencedin dog park. “There’s everything needed for you to walk your dog and take it out for a run. It’s a fairly large dog park,” said Charlotte
www.wttrgv.com Campbell, one of three managers for the park. “There’s water for them and everything to pick up after them. We also have people taking care of it and the ones who have animals really love it. Some of the dogs our residents have are rather large, so this is an area for them to take them for a good run and some exercise.” Remote control racing is another activity that is quickly rising in popularity in the Winter Texan parks. Several parks have built a track ranging from drag racing lanes to dirt to grass to carpet tracks. League play at several parks are scheduled to begin this month and next. Siesta Retirement Village in Weslaco has 410 mobile home lots and residents
there are excited about a new pool being built for them. The old pool was removed and the new pool is 30 x 50 and includes a hot tub, fencing, lounge chairs and other pool furniture. The pool is currently still under construction but is scheduled to open for residents on Jan. 15. Tom Clark at Sunshine RV Park in Harlingen said they spent the summer working on the large park’s infrastructure. With nearly 1,500 lots (1,027 RV and 450 mobile home spaces) the park spent money focusing on repaving the many roads the park has to maintain. “You can’t do the roadwork when most of the residents are here, so that was a major project,” said Clark, the park man-

ager. He added that the park spent about $100,000 on infrastructure, including resurfacing the jacuzzi and re-plastering the main pool. Other parks had smaller items they focused on. Canyon Lake RV Resort’s acting park manager, Linda Richardson, a resident of the park for seven years, said there were no major projects worked on during the off-season, but they were tweaking some things. “We’ve got a lot of new cooks,” she said. “We’re trying different foods and different things for different nights of the week. That’s going to be fun.”
