From the Publisher Giving Thanks

It’s hard to believe it’s Thanksgiving already! But I am looking forward to getting together with friends and family. Of course, the food is always wonderful, but what I enjoy the most is the time we spend together. But Thanksgiving so much more than friends, family and great food. It’s about gratitude and truly thanking God for all He has provided. We are truly blessed to live in a country that enjoys so much freedom and opportunity. This land and this people have been greatly blessed. First, I am thankful to God – for my family, for my faith, for the Redeemer of the world, for life. It is truly amazing how blessed we are. I also want to express my gratitude to our veterans and men and women currently serving in the armed services. My son, Trent, recently retired from the Air Force after serving 21 years as an officer. It was through his years of military service and sacrifice that I truly came to appreciate – deeply appreciate – our military men and women and what they go through. It seemed he was constantly on deployment for 6 to 12 months at a time, one deployment after another overseas. After each deployment and being away from his family, it was another period of adjustment at home with a Type A military personality trying to figure out how to fit in again with his wife and children who had been managing things at home just fine without him being around. We can only imagine what adjustments they had to make. Then, just as they are getting it all together as a family – you guessed it – another deployment. Dad’s gone and Mom’s in charge, again. So, it goes without saying, I am grateful for the military families – the spouses and children who are left behind every time Dad (or Mom) is deployed on a new assignment. As a parent, I thought my pilot son was “safe” when he was assigned to fly bombing missions over Iraq. It was years See GIVING THANKS pg. 23

OPERAT MAS ION CHRIST

Winter Texans bring Christmas joy to children Christmastime is a time many of us think of others and seek ways to help those in need – those who are less fortunate. So many children go without proper food, shelter and essential medical care every day along the border. These needs seem to be magnified at Christmas. And Winter Texans seem to have some of the biggest hearts to be found, as they organize and work together to create wonderful events to make Christmas special for needy children and their families. Following are just a couple of examples of the many, many “Operation Christmas” projects Winter Texans either organize or for which they provide indispensable support and assistance. Amigos de los Niños makes Christmas plans In 1990, the group Amigos de Los Niños de Mexico (the friends of the children of Mexico) was formed to address those needs through gifts of friendship, love, food and presents to the children of Mexico. It is the time of year when the group is looking for volunteers to help. There will be meetings open to the public at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Nov. 28, Dec. 12 and Jan. 9 (to elect new officers and board members) at First Methodist Church in Donna, located at 228 S. Main Street in Donna. During the meetings you can sign up for various committees Santa holds a child during the 2016 annual Amigos de los Niños and get more information. Residents enjoy Country Jam at El Valle de la Luna/del Sol

Jim Brommel

Jim Brommel took a step back from the mic during a musical interlude and cleared his voice. “That’s really high,” he said before stepping back up and finishing the song “Old Rugged Cross” to the applause of those in attendance. Brommel, who went on to sing a few more times during El Valle de la Luna/El Valle del Sol’s weekly Thursday Country Jam, has been singing for more than 35 years, at least in front of crowds. When he began singing, there was nobody to hear him while riding his tractor on his Iowa farm – well maybe the livestock heard him. “When they ask me what key, I tell them I sing in the key of John Deere.” Now, however, he’ll sing at 20 to 30

jams across the Rio Grande Valley before Christmas even gets here. “I’ll go all over and sing in as many jams as I can,” he said. “I’ll go to Alamo Rec, Alamo Palms, Bentsen, Pharr South – everywhere. I think the more often you sing, the better your voice becomes.” He goes for good reason – his voice is outstanding, with a range that many who are in their prime would be envious of, hitting the high notes on “How Great Thou Art,” with smooth authority. That song is difficult to sing because of its range and Brommel, who recorded it on one of two CDs he made, shows his tenor to baritone range with that song among others. RGV welcomes return of Ralph Kuster’s variety musical performances Ralph Kuster’s vocal range is only surpassed by the beautiful tone of his voice and the vast number of songs he knows. Since 2012 Kuster, has performed in the Rio Grande Valley. A Canadian in the summer months, Kuster used to be a regular performer in Branson, Mo. He now looks forward to performing for Winter Texans each season in the Rio Grande Valley. His first performance of the season, “Timeless Treasures,” will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 2 at the Border Theater, located at 905 N. Conway Ave. in Mission. Tickets are $10 per person. “It may sound corny but when I was a little boy, I would listen to any of the great singers and loved when they could hold the long notes,” Kuster said. “Elvis, Humperdink, Eddie Arnold – I was a teen and heavy into music. When Eddie sings the Amen in the Lord’s Prayer, he holds it for 24 seconds. I would do that over and over until I had air left at the end.” Kuster, who resides in Paradise Park in Pharr, said he’s excited about the “Timeless Treasures” show that’s a little country, a little of the classics, some rock and one Broadway song in each set. He’ll also perform a few Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin hits. On the stage with Kuster will be a screen that will flash videos and photos to

go with each song. In fact, he has photos to coincide with all nine different types of shows he has going right now. Besides his “Timeless Treasures” show, some of the others include a Sinatra Tribute, his popular Christmas Show, an Irish performance and a Tribute to Broadway, among others. “There’s a lot of interaction with the audience,” Kuster said. “And people enjoy the photos along with so many songs. I have enough songs to do three-hour shows; it’s hard to cut back on some songs.” Some of the tunes people will hear at the Timeless Treasures performance include, “Love a Rainy Night,” “The Sound of Silence,” “Moon River,” “Please Release Me,” “Save the Last Dance,” and others by singers like Neil Diamond, Leroy Brown, Elvis and more. “I really look forward to that show,” Kuster said. “I really get into it.” Kuster started his professional career, as he puts it “late in life,” performing in front of a live audience for the first time in 2004. He had grown up singing in high school and performing in plays. Finally, he decided to chase his dream, and has found success, and plenty of joy.” He sings with several different voices and can actually impersonate the likes of Neil Diamond,

Frank Sinatra and others. Ralph Kuster’s performances in the Rio Grande Valley for December are: Dec. 2, Border Theater, Mission, New Timeless Treasures Show, 2 pm; Dec. 13, Bit O’ Heaven, Alamo, Timeless Treasures Show, 6:30 p.m., $7, 603-396-2786; Dec. 14, Casa Del Sol, Donna, Christmas Show, 7 p.m., $6 pp , 956-464-9024; Dec. 15, Winter Green Estates, Mission, Christmas Show, 6:30 p.m., $6 pp, 989-708-0921; Dec. 16, Border Theater, Mission, Christmas Show, 2 p.m., $10, 417-230-8198; Dec. 18, Tropic Winds, Harlingen, Christmas Show, 7 p.m., $6 in advance, $7 at the door, 956-423-5484; Dec. 20, Park Place, Harlingen, Christmas Show, 7 p.m., $7pp, 956-412-0375; Dec. 21, Winter Ranch, Alamo, Christmas Show, 7 p.m., $7pp, 417-293-4438; Dec. 22, Tropic Star, Pharr, Christmas Show, 7 p.m., $6 pp, 956-7875773; Dec. 23, Sunshine RV Resort, Harlingen, Christmas Show, 7 p.m., $7 pp, 830-765-0272. From pg. 4 Holiday, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and more. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. The song-and-dance revue “Two on Tap,” with Melissa Giattino and Ron DeStefano is a high-energy performance that takes place Thursday, Jan. 11. The talented dance duo will bring the audience back to the days of Fred & Ginger or Mickey & Judy. It’s a return to days when those dance couples brought undeniable chemistry, harmony and prevision tap dancing to the stage and screen. The show “breathes new life into classic song-and-dance with gorgeous vocals, exciting choreography, and unique arrangements.” Up next on Saturday, Jan. 27 is a nostalgic look at the legendary Hank Williams and his influence on country music in a performance by Obie Award-winning singer/actor Jason Petty. “I was transported back in time,” said Don Helms, an original Hank Williams band member, about “Hank and My Honky Tonk Heroes.” Petty will bring Williams’ music back to life while also paying tribute to artists such as Roy Acuff, Ernest Tubb, and The Carter Family. The Harlingen Concert Association isn’t fiddling around with this year’s lineup, but they have included triple-threat fiddle champions The Quebe Sisters, who will take the stage on Sat-

urday, Feb. 10. The trio will perform authentic Western Swing and vintage country music reminiscent of Bob Wills and Riders in the Sky. Their multi-part, close harmonies and Texas-style fiddle tunes are authentic Americana music, delivered with a cannonball of stage presence. The fifth show, on Wednesday, Feb. 21, brings in a completely new breed in the tenor genre with the Three Redneck Tenors. It’s “ like Duck Dynasty goes to Carnegie Hall – down-home laughs with big city music by classically-trained artists.” Written by opera-veteran Matthew Lord and arranged by award-winning composer Craig Bohmler, these America’s Got Talent finalists are sure to delight with amazing vocals and a fresh approach. The sixth and final show in the HCA 2017-18 season celebrates the 100th anniversary of recorded jazz. On Friday, March 9, Vinyl Jazz, a Century Celebration, will be presented by The Sidestreet Strutters Jazz Band with vocalist Meloney Collins. Performances include Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Ellington’s Mood Indigo, All or Nothing At All recorded by Frank Sinatra, and more. This show is a wonderful potpourri of jazz, pop, and R&B songs that have shaped our music landscape. For more information on the nonprofit Harlingen Concert Association, or to purchase season tickets, go to www.HarlingenConcert.com or call (956) 216-5990. wood residents mentor students at the school, a program that started with the Lakewood RV Worship Committee. Fundraisers for the project include a Soup for the Needy Luncheon & Bake Sale from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8 at Lakewood RV Resort, located at 4525 Graham Road in Harlingen. The event is open to the public. There will also be a Dance for the Needy, a Square Dance/Round Dance for the Needy, a quilt raffle and a Nativity Scene raffle. The quilt has been designed by the park’s quilting ladies. The Nativity Scene is carved by hand from wood by a former resident. Raffle tickets are on sale now and will be sold at fundraising events, with the drawing held Monday, Dec. 11 – and the winner need not be present to win. The Dance for the Needy will be held from 2 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 2. Western and ballroom dance music will be performed. The Square Dance/Round Dance for the Needy will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 3, hosted by callers Nick Harley and Shirley Heiny. Following the fundraisers, the Stuart Place school children and their families visit the resort for fun with the residents and, of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus. Cookies, punch and fellowship will be provided along with groceries, gifts and a handmade quilt for each child.

“We receive a warm sense of the season in our hearts, serving God in His work,” said Donna Wright, Lakewood resident and Christmas for the Needy chairperson. For more information call Donna Wright at (269) 806-1428. Contact the Winter Texan Times We’d like to know what your park or group is doing to make Christmas special for those less fortunate. Swing Street Big Band set for 18th season

Some people enjoy listening to the music performed by the Swing Street Big Band. Others just can’t sit still. They want to hit the dance floor when the 18-piece dance/ show band kicks off its 18th season from 3 to 5:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 3 at the Texas Theater Ballroom, located at 115 E Newcombe Ave. in Pharr. Started by Winter Texans, the band has evolved over the years and is currently made up mostly of active and retired music educators from around the Valley, including a few Winter Texans. Consisting of five saxes, four trumpets, four trombones, piano, bass, drums, guitar and female vocalist, several of the musicians are actually directors of award winning high school bands from the area and bring a wealth of the talent and experience to complete the full big band sound. The band plays music ranging from the early big band days of Glenn Miller’s “In The Mood,” to the music that will bring you back to the days of your high school dances

and “sock hops.” “We like to cater to our audience and we’re happy to take requests from our music library,” said band leader Bob Comeau. “We have two kinds of fans that follow the band. First we have the dancers that range from “seasoned ballroom dancers” to folks who just enjoy being on the dance floor and moving to the music. Secondly, we have listeners who just come to enjoy the big band sound and watch the dancers, while enjoying their favorite beverage with friends.” The band has added four new venues to the regular stops they have played for years. Those include Aladdin Villas and Leisure Valley Ranch in Mission, Alamo Rose in Alamo and the Texas Theater Ballroom in Pharr. Swing Street will also present two “Big Band Christmas Shows” this year at Bentsen Grove Resort in Mission at 7 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 10, and at Aladdin Villas at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17.

The McAllen Town Band Association will present the Parula Winds Ensemble Concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 26, at the McAllen Public Library, 4001 N. 23rd St. The Parula Winds is a woodwind quintet that will play music from Mozart to Hindemith, from baroque to contemporary. The quintet performs throughout the year at events such as the City of McAllen’s Lighting of the Christmas Tree, Founder’s Day at McAllen’s IMAS museum, and the Lark Branch of the McAllen Public Library. The following day, Nov. 27, the McAllen Wind Ensemble will celebrate with the City of McAllen at their annual Lighting of the Christmas Tree at the McAllen Convention Center at 6 p.m. Both events are free to the public. The McAllen Town Band, as it was originally named, was created in 1973 following Bill Wilson’s trip to Mexico where he listened to bands performing in town plazas. He envisioned something similar where performances could be held at Archer Park in McAllen. Musicians were recruited and later that year, in November, the town band had its first rehearsal in the McAllen High School Band Hall. It’s first concert was held in Archer Park on May 31, 1974. Now, 43 years later, the band travels throughout the Rio Grande Valley and into Mexico to

sounds of the music. No interruptions, please! Trumpet player Del Hickey, had the stage when I arrived – half an hour after the jam started. He was backed by a band of eight performers that included

two trumpets, a saxophone, an accordion, two electric guitars and a keyboard. Del was playing “The Best Things in Life Are Free.” Del was followed by Ted Begeman, who gave a lively rendition of “Ain’t Misbehavin.” Then Gerry Rutherford played “Mr. Sandman” on his trumpet and also sang a few verses. After the break, he returned with “Tennessee Waltz,” on his flugelhorn. Not only did he play, he also sang several verses of “Tennessee Waltz” including one I had never heard before about the girlfriend wearing a paper dress to the Fireman’s Ball where the sports section of the dress caught on fire revealing all.” “Tennessee Waltz” was my mother’s favorite song but I never heard her sing that verse!

Claudette Schafer sang “Music, Music, Music!” and “Put your Arms Around Me.” Guitarist Bruce Wutzke followed, singing and playing “Miles and Miles of Texas.” He also sang Conway Twitty’s version of “It’s Only Make Believe.” Roger Steiger, alto sax, played “Stranger on the Shore.” He also played Tommy Dorsey’s “Let’s Get Away From It All.” Later he played “Deep Purple” on his soprano saxophone. Eloise Rutherford played some number on the keyboard, followed by John Kujda, on the accordion playing “Litchenstein Polka.” Trombone player Vern Denman entertained the audience with “Moon Glow” and “Indiana,” and “Georgia,” which brought back old memories.

GIVING THANKS

ism. That’s just what our servicemen and women do. It’s their “job.” They do it so well, we take it for granted. They’ll tell you it’s what they signed up to do – to protect our nation and our freedom wherever they are called to serve. I am grateful and I do not take for granted what so many have died and sacrificed to protect. God bless America! (And Canada too!) Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

From pg. 1 later before my son told us about the near misses as anti-aircraft artillery tried to bring his bomber down – including a harrowing experience I may share at a later time. And in typical military style modesty, it was only during Trent’s retirement ceremony that I learned of many of his accomplishments and acts of hero-

From pg. 1 country jam he also performed both “Old Rugged Cross” and “Make the World Go Away.” The park also hosts a Polka Jam on Wednesdays from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Vanessa Vargas, one of two property managers at El Valle de la Luna/El Valle del Sol, said that jam will start in December and usually packs the building. You can find Brommel there as well. Since he’s a resident there – now going on 32 seasons – it only makes sense for him to perform on his home turf. But he’s been all over the Rio Grande Valley when it comes to singing. He’s performed in Mercedes, sang “Silent Night” at his church, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and routinely performed at the annual Amateur Night at the old McAllen Convention Center. “I remember getting standing ovations there, quite often,” he said. “That was always such a good time. I went there 10 straight years.” Brommel said his parents moved to the Valley in 1972. They sold one of their Iowa farms to him and another to his brother. He and his wife, Margaret, had six children – three boys and three girls. Five of them still live “up there” as Brommel put it, but the other one lives in Austin. Brommel also has 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He said Christmas is usually a special time with Eagle Pass Gambling 2 Days

“I gotta get more Christmas presents,” he joked. “I don’t need anything but they’ll usually get me a card for a restaurant to go eat. That’s fine because I was born hungry.” While the Winter Texan season is just – like in baseball terms – in spring training, there weren’t too many performers at the show, it didn’t lack quality by any means. John Ecken, in his black cowboy hat and guitar, had a great time singing “Lord It’s Hard To Be Humble” while LeRoy and Virginia Kuhlers sang, among other songs, “Jingle Bells.” “That song was actually written for Thanksgiving,” LeRoy said. “People think it’s for Christmas but not originally.” Earlier, the couple, from Ankeny, Iowa and residents of W & I Resort in Mission, sang “Hey Good Looking,” which closed with a Virginia solo on the accordion. Toy Drive The park is also collecting toys for the Mission Police Department Toy Drive. The toys can be dropped off during office hours at the activities building, located at 2500 E. Business Hwy. 83. Vargas said toys will be accepted until Dec. 20. Call 956-585-5704 for more information. Check out the Winter Texan Times website at www.wintertexantimes.com and click on the Parks Calendar to see when El Valle Del Sol/El Valle de la Luna has its different events and jams.
