Welcome Back Party Planned We’re so glad to have all our Winter Texan friends back in the Rio Grande Valley, we’re planning a party just for you. The Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the Winter Texan Times to host a Winter Texan Welcome Jim Brunson Back Party on Friday, Dec. 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature live entertainment provided by The Cowboys, The Hobo and the Drifter, the Greyrock Band, and Keys & Strings. Rich Bellert, cowboy poet extraordinaire, will emcee the event and is sure to keep the audience entertained between acts with his western style humor. The theme of this year’s Welcome Back Party is “Deep in the Heart of Texas” and will feature informational booths on popular Mission area tourist attractions so Winter Texans can learn about some of the interesting points of interest in the area. The Welcome Back Party offers free admission, and lunch combos will be available for purchase for $5 from two of our most popular food vendors, Ace’s BBQ and Jason’s Deli. So, mark your calendar and come on over and join us on Dec. 8 at the Mission Chamber of Commerce Market Square, located adjacent to the Chamber of Commerce building at 202 W. Tom Landry Street in Mission. Bring your lawn chairs so you can relax and enjoy the outdoor performances by these popular Winter Texan Wintertainers™. “Operation Christmas” We’d like to know what your park or group is doing this year to make Christmas special for those less fortunate. Is your group doing something for others during the Christmas holiday? Let us know at the Winter Texan Times. Email us at news@wintertexantimes.com to send us a little information about what you or your group are doing for others this Christmas season. You could send us photos and a brief description after you hold your park’s “Operation Christmas” events so we can share your stories in the newspaper and online at www.wintertexantimes.com. Or, let us know a few days in advance, and we’ll try to stop in to take some photos of your group in action. Call us at 956-580-7800 or send us an email. Thank you for making this Christmas a special one to remember for so many less fortunate children in the Rio Grande Valley and Mexico. God bless you all!
Hidalgo’s Festival of Lights bigger, brighter in 2017
If you’re a Winter Texan trying to get away from the snow and cold, you can still have your snow – without the cold – and enjoy Christmas in Hidalgo at the
Festival of Lights. For 27 years, the City of Hidalgo has turned the small city into a glowing Christmasland with the traditional Festi-
val of Lights, which begins Friday, Dec. 1 and runs through Dec. 31. The city transforms from a middle-size town to a Christmas phenomena as it constructs and puts up more than 500 light displays that contain more than five million lights. This year’s theme is “Toyland” and narrated guided tours or the city’s festive light displays start at city hall and continue through the entire month of December – with the exception of the parade day, Christmas day, the day of the Ramon Ayala Posada, and New Year’s eve. The guided tour is only $5. Also available is a dinner and tour package for $12. The illuminated parade kicks of the entire festival beginning at 6 p.m., Dec. 1 and travels throughout the city, ending at Hidalgo City Hall, which stands as the hub of the festival and is located at 704 E. Texano Dr. in Hidalgo. On these grounds See FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS pg. 15
Brownsville Holiday Village continues to grow Vendors and entertainment added to festive display
With one flip of the switch, Dean Porter Park transforms itself into the quaint Brownsville Christmas Village. For the eighth year, the magical Christmas Village has returned to Brownsville, this year with a record 32 cottages. The tiny villas, roughly 10-feet by 10-feet, are a look into traditional Christmas days. Each cottage is filled with holiday excitement such as dolls, elves, candy, Christmas trees and a variety of lights; even Santa and Mrs. Claus show up.
“This is our largest Christmas Village yet and we are excited,” said Jeanne Hughston, owner of 1112 Studios and marketing coordinator for the Village. “What’s really different are the vendors – we have about 25 vendors this year and it gives it much more of a fair feeling.” The cottages make a semicircle through the park, making it a simple and pleasant walk to each one. In addition to their festive displays with colorful Christmas lighting, some of the cottages
have added Christmas music. And every day, Fritter – the elf on the shelf – can be found inside one of the cottages. “Our Elf’s name is Fritter,” Hughston said. “Just like other Elves on the Shelf, the elf has been sent to watch over all of the children and the elf flies back to the North Pole each night to report back to Santa how the children are behaving.” While the elf may be watching over

‘A Tejano Christmas Carol’ returns to Pharr Community Theater
The Pharr Community Theater will present the play “A Tejano Christmas Carol” for a second year. Pedro Garcia, CEO and artistic director has been directing the theater company for the past 10 years and also plays the role of Mr. Codos, the equivalent to Charles Dickens’ “Scrooge.” Many of last year’s cast are returning, including Danika Leal as Tiny Tina, Adan Rodriguez as Beto Gonzalez, Joel Gutierrez as Martinez, doubling as the Ghost of Christmas Future, and Armandina Sesin as Adelita, the Ghost of Christmas Present. “Our Christmas play has a modern day Rio Grande twist and, of course, all the intrigue of Dickens’ original Christmas story, including the three ghosts, the children and their families and the battle between good and bad and an outcome that surprises everyone,” Garcia said. This fun and entertaining play is also a tribute to the mighty Rio Grande and its nearly 1,900-mile journey that begins in Colorado and ends in Brownsville. “So many people take our most precious water source for granted, but in reality without it, we would be lost,” Garcia said. The two-act play with a cast of 16 local actors is set in the city of Pharr and is told
predominately in English, with a little Spanish. Performances will be presented at the theater from Wednesday, Dec. 6, through Saturday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 10, at 3 p.m. Pharr Community Theater tickets are $7 for general admission and $5 for students, seniors and military. Tickets will be sold at the door starting one hour before each play, on a first-come first-serve basis, for the 60-seat PCT theater at 213 West Newcombe, Pharr. For more information, call 956-239-0412 or 956-655-9308. The play will also go on tour, with performances in the following three Winter Texan retirement parks: Monday, Dec. 11, 7 p.m. at Bit-OHeaven Park, 1051 W Bus. Hwy 83, Donna. Tickets $7. It’s that time again when shoppers will be greeted by the sound of The Salvation Army bells ringing at stores throughout the RGV. The Red Kettle Campaign is The Salvation Army’s major fundraising event of the year and all proceeds support year-round programs and emergency assistance benefitting those in need in our community. Believe it or not The Salvation Army red kettles were once hailed as “the newest and most novel device for collecting money” way back in 1898 by the New York World newspaper. The first sighting of The Salvation Army kettle was in 1891, when a young Salvation Army Captain in San Francisco was looking for a way to fund a community Christmas dinner for the area’s poor. He remembered as a sailor seeing a large pot on the dock in Liverpool, England, where passersby would drop charitable donations. Captain McFee secured a large red pot, positioned it so all those going to and from the ferryboats could see it, and launched a tradition that has since spread throughout the world. “Public contributions to the Red Kettle Campaign enable The Salvation Army to deliver emergency assistance and support to individuals and families who come to us in crisis, often at the very worst times of their life,” said Captain Stephen Correira, commanding officer of The Salvation Army Hidalgo County. “You’ll see our red kettles and bell ringers stationed outside your favorite stores and local businesses Monday-Saturday from mid-November until Christmas Eve. With more individuals and families coming to us for help than ever before, please don’t forget to give to The Salvation Army red kettles this season.”
All money raised through the Red Kettle Campaign – which kicked off during the half time show at the Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Day game – remains in the community where it is collected. In 2016 The Salvation Army in Hidalgo County raised $197,000 in kettles and this year has a goal of $200,000. Volunteers are needed throughout December to help ring bells. If you, your RV park, family, or church group are interested in signing up to ring a bell, or would like more information about The Salvation Army, please call Norma at 956-682-1468 or visit them at 1600 N. 23rd Street, McAllen.

Oleander Acres has Farmers’ Market, Butterfly Garden
While Oleander Acres may be a smaller park, it provides a variety of activities for its residents. Each Saturday there is a Farmers’ Market from 1 to 4 p.m. so residents may purchase fresh fruit, vegetables and baked goods. The Oleander Acres Farmers’ Market offers fresh fruits including citrus, star fruit, avocados and exotics. Manager Seth Welliver pointed out two of the more exotic fruits like the chocolate pudding fruit, which is a green fruit similar to a persimmon to which it is related. Welliver also pointed out a smaller tan fruit called a chico sapodilla, which he said tasted like brown sugar. The exotic fruits were a product of Rivers End Nursery and Farm, which also had papershell pecans for sale. Engert Farms offered fresh citrus and fresh juice, squeezed in the morning. It was the sweetest most delicious juice I had tasted in a long time! They also offered locally produced wildflower honey. Welliver said all fruits come from within a 400-mile radius. Most were grown here in the Valley but they got pineapples from a farmer in Mexico. Amy’s Home Baked Goods of Edinburg offered banana bread, thumb print cookies, and sugar cookies in the shapes of pumpkins and turkeys for the Thanksgiving weekend. She also had a variety of unique jellies like blueberry pomegranate, mango habanero, jalapeno and other exotic flavors. Perhaps the most unique offering was Japanese garlic. Instead of large bulb like
those found in the grocery store, the garlic resembled a pistachio nut. But when the outer covering was removed, a tender soft bubble of garlic was ready to eat. Vendor Art Luna said the garlic is especially good for medicinal purposes. Luna said he eats one or two raw daily, one in the morning and one in the evening. He said they are good for the body’s immune system, cold prevention, hypertension and other conditions as well. Although they were not there the day we visited, due to the holiday weekend, Welliver said Lil Buddy Farms usually provides heirloom vegetables including squash, tomatoes, arugula, basil, and daikon radishes. Welliver also pointed out a number of plants for sale along the back wall. One of the most popular ones for sale was the Moringa tree, which is entirely edible. It is known for helping mental clarity, works as an appetite suppressant, known to eliminate constipation, reduce wrinkles and works and an anti-fungal medicine as well. One of Welliver’s customers, Barbara Veach, came in with a caterpillar of a Gulf Fritillary, a rare butterfly. She wanted to transplant it to his butterfly garden. He maintains a 3,000-square-foot butterfly garden in the park. Welliver said some time ago his wife, Carly, saw an unusual butterfly on one of their plants and took a picture of it. Welliver’s father, Ed, showed the picture to Marianna Wright, the director of the National Butterfly Center in Mission. Wright
informed him it was an erato heliconian crimson patch longwing butterfly, which was very rare. “It changed everything for us,” laughs Welliver. “We quit spraying our plants and started planting nectar plants designed to host the butterflies.” He received a grant from the Native Plant Society of Texas and another from the Rio Grande Valley Garden Club. He has planted 10 varieties of milkweed, favored by Monarch butterflies, along with other host plants such as the passion vine that hosts the Gulf Fritillary. Veach, who resides in another local park, said there was not enough of the host plant for the large caterpillar and the smaller ones she brought to her park so she brought them to Welliver’s garden for a better chance of survival. She explained she grows milkweed for Monarchs in her yard and has dill for Eastern Black Swallowtails as well. She found eggs for Swallowtails and took them inside to increase the likelihood of the eggs surviving and turning into butterflies. She recently released 35 swallowtails. Welliver said many of the residents in his park have also become interested in providing butterfly habitat and planted host plants in front of their mobile homes as well. For those interested in doing the same, each recommended looking at Valley Plant Addicts on Facebook or the Beautiful Monarch. Welliver has host plants for sale in his nursery where he also grows
fruit and vegetables. Welliver concluded saying that one rare butterfly has totally changed his way of farming and caused him and many people in his park to dedicate land to planning host plants for different species of butterflies. At the same time, the organic fruits and vegetables he produces are much healthier for his family. The Farmers’ Market, which celebrates its one-year anniversary on Saturday, encourages residents of the park to buy healthier produce for their own consumption. Others are welcome to come to the Farmers Market held each Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. or to stop by and see the variety of butterflies in their butterfly garden.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS
From you will find a stage with nightly entertainment, a small house to take pictures with Santa, a carnival, food and the starting point for guided tours through the displays. A new taste – literally – for the festival is a house where gourmet chocolates from the Mozna chocolate factory will be available to the public. The factory is located less than a mile from the festival. Mozna Chocolate is an artisanal bean to bar chocolate factory established in 2015 with a mission to make high quality dark chocolate. Trolley and Train Tours There are two tour options available, one that is the tour only and another that is a dinner concert trolley tour package. Here, visitors will take a narrated tour aboard a train or trolley and learn a little about the history of Hidalgo. The dinner tours include a roast beef meal complete with musical entertainment. The dinner takes place in front of City Hall from Dec.

pg. 1 2-19. Call (956) 843-5311 for more information or to make reservations. The tour ends at the historic Hidalgo Pumphouse, which also sponsors a movie night every Saturday during the festival at the Starlight Cinema. Snow Days To make the festival seem even more Christmas like, two Snow Days – that’s right, Snow Days – have been added to the festival’s schedule at the Hidalgo Memorial Park Pavilion, located at 200 Judy Dr. in Hidalgo. The Dec. 16 Snow Day is free to the public and includes snow (don’t worry, we’re not forecasting snow...it will already be made), a slide and the opportunity to build snowmen – something Winter Texans do better than anyone! The second Snow Day is Saturday, Dec. 23 and will cost $10 for admission. The Snow Days are sponsored by H-E-B. Ramon Ayala Posada The annual Ramon Ayala Posada, hosted by five-time Grammy award-winning
NOVEMBER 30, 2017 15 www.wttrgv.com
artist Ramon Ayala, will be held Dec. 20. According to the city, this is one of the largest single day events in the Rio Grande Valley, drawing crowds of up to 45,000 people. Known as the “King of the Accordion,” Ayala has hosted this massive free concert for years. The posada officially starts with a ribbon cutting at 5 p.m., followed by the City of Hidalgo giving away toys to more than 10,000 low-in-
come children. The City of Hidalgo, the Hermes Music Foundation and other local businesses team up to provide these toys. The posada includes a list of top artists who will perform free to the public. The lineup will be announced at a Dec. 6 press conference. Of course, Santa will also be in attendance from 6 to 10 p.m. Dec. 1 to Dec. 23 in the Hidalgo City Hall Courtyard. Pictures are $15 for one or $20 for two.
HOLIDAY VILLAGE From pg. 1
children, anybody who visits and finds him is eligible to win some prizes from Krispy Kreme. All anyone has to do to enter is find Fritter’s hiding spot, take a picture in front of the cottage and post in on your Facebook page using #IFOUNDFRITTER. Here’s a hint – there are many elves throughout the cottages. Fritter, however, is holding a box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts. There are some new cottages this year to add to the wide-ranging themes at the village. Among them is the North Pole Cocoa Shop #2, sponsored by Brownsville Coffee Shop #2. Jovita Chase has owned the well-known Brownsville Coffee Shop #2 for 42 years and has been serving food 24 hours a day since 1977. Chase’s mom actually started the business in 1964 in downtown Brownsville on Elizabeth Street in a small wooden-frame building that previously was a four-room house. “There was a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom and I’m not sure what the fourth room was; maybe a bedroom,” Chase said. “We had to remodel it.” The cottage takes on the idea of a cocoa shop instead of a coffee shop, with chocolate being found in nooks and crannies, with the additional touch of someone singing inside the cottage. Another addition this year is the Nutcracker Lodge, built by the Masonic Temple Lodge in Brownsville. This cottage is filled with Nutcrackers just relaxing and enjoying the moment. Updates were made to the Celaya Home cottage, a representation of one of the most historic homes in Brownsville. Simon Celaya, trying to get goods to his stores at lower prices, organized the Rio
Grande Railroad in 1870 and finished it’s 22.5 mile construction between Point Isabel and Brownsville in 1872. Simon Celaya had two sons - Augustine and Jose. Augustine was a lawyer and businessman who, like his brother Jose, continued to grow his father’s assets. In 1904, Augustine designed this Victorian home for his family. In attempts at climate control, the home’s hand-made adobe brick walls are 13 inches thick and the home’s entrance is orientated toward the corner, where three polygonal bays join to form an entrance porch designed to capture the slightest Gulf breeze. Inside the home is a free-standing, curved staircase, said to be one of the most striking interior architectural features of Brownsville. The Village is open until Jan. 1. There is no admission price and food, art and craft vendors will be set up every weekend, and some weekdays. Santa will make an appearance at the Gazebos starting at 6 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for complimentary photos (bring your camera). There will also be plenty of entertainment throughout the month. Among those performing include Veronique. Veronique Medrano is a Lopez High School graduate and a product of the BISD Fine Arts Department. After graduating from UTRGV, she released her first Tejano album titled “Encantadora” which got her nominated as Best New Female Artist at the Tejano Music Awards. And she just recently signed on to AMI Records Latin. Local schools and other entertainers will also perform throughout the month of December. For more information and to see a complete schedule of entertainment, visit holidayvillagebrownsville.com.

Baffin Bay Seafood: Drive If you are looking for a unique restaurant with great food, drinks, and a beautiful view; head to Baffin Bay Seafood Co. A short drive east on FM 771 off of Highway 77 will take you through the South Texas Brush Country to a great view of Baffin Bay. The restaurant is a bit off the beaten path, but well worth the short 10 minute detour off of Highway 77. You might even see some local wildlife on the way. The attire and atmosphere is definably laid back. While many go specifically for the drum fish ribs, there are plenty of other choices on the menu. The “fish ribs” are exactly what they sound like, the ribs of drum battered and fried to perfection. Eating the ribs is quite an experience and the extra work is well worth it. A few other menu items include gulf shrimp, locally caught fresh black drum, giant burgers, great steaks and many
other choices. All items are cooked to order and prepa by hand. When the weather is nice (almost always), y can sit outside and enjoy a beer or mixed drink wh overlooking Baffin Bay. Each table is greeted with a b ket of crackers to top with their famous seafood sau The sauce is an upgraded tarter or remoulade sauce t is amazing. Craig Alexander purchased the property from the o inal proprietors, the Kraatz family, in early 2015. A a complete kitchen remodel and dining area facelift, restaurant opened back up in November 2015. Mr. Al ander has 30 years of restaurant experience and dema consistent, quality food and excellent customer serv Many of the patrons are regulars, so do not be surpri if it seems like more of a family diner than just anot restaurant. Red Hat Queen’s Council holds first meeting
By Kathy Olivarez The Red Hat Queen’s Council held its first meeting of the season at Mamma Mia’s Pizza in McAllen on Monday, Nov 13. Queens present were reminded of upcoming events such as the Annual Festival of Tables to be held this year at
Trophy Gardens in Alamo on Monday, Jan. 29. Tickets are $18 and Queens were asked to collect the money for their members who will attend by the December meeting so the event organizers will be able to get a correct count of participants. Doors will open at 11 a.m. so guests
may tour the room and see the 30 elaborately decorated tables for all types of occasions. A lunch of Chicken Cordon Bleu will be served at noon. After lunch, entertainment will be provided by Bill Chrastil, who was named 2017 Entertainer of the Year by the Valley Star Awards. Queens were reminded of the other big event for all Red Hatters to be sponsored by the Dazzling Dolphins at the Schlitterbahn on Feb. 27. The theme of this year’s costume show is black and
white. More details on this event will be made available at later meetings. Several Queens recommended tours their Red Hat groups had taken such as having lunch at the old Coronado Hotel in Weslaco and recommended that other Red Hat Groups take the tour. The next Red Hat Queen’s Council meeting will be the annual Christmas party to be held Monday, Dec. 11 at Red Lobster on expressway 83 in McAllen.
The McAllen Music Club will host a free cello concert at 2 p.m., Monday, Dec. 4 in the Miller Room at Valley Keyboards, 900 Harvey St., McAllen. Abram Garcia, who has performed as a soloist with the UTRGV Symphony Orchestra and VSO will play a concert with a Christmas twist.

Orchestra and Wind Ensemble performances announced The Winter Texan Orchestra, conducted by Bob Seymour, is starting its winter concert season, as is the McAllen Symphonic Band/Wind Ensemble under the baton of Roger Olivarez. The Winter Texan Orchestra, which began more than 30 years ago at the TipO-Texas RV Resort in Pharr, is under the direction of Bob Seymour, now in his fifth year. The former band director in Edinburg, Ind., who also spent 24 years with the Boy Scouts and 15 years with Rotary International, said the orchestra has between 45 and 50 Winter Texans. The group, which has a goal to promote music to youth, is offering an outlet for older home school students to join them. Their first rehearsal was set for 9 a.m. Nov. 22 at Tip-O-Texas, with additional ones coming each Wednesday after that. The season opens with Christmas concerts at 7 p.m. Dec. 14 at Tip-O-Texas and 7 p.m. Dec. 17 at Golf View Estates in Mission. The next concerts come in 2018 at 3 p.m., Feb. 11 in Aladdin Villas; 7 p.m., Feb. 22 at Tip-O-Texas; 2 p.m., March 4 at Orange Grove RV Park in Edinburg and 7 p.m., March 6 at TipO-Texas.

MOSTHistory offers insight into South Texas culture
“The Museum of South Texas History (MOSTHistory) is the best first stop for anyone who is new to the Rio Grande Valley who wishes to understand the culture of the South Texas region,” said Shan Rankin, executive director of the museum. “It will help newcomers see how the region developed from early times into the thriving community that exists today.” The museum opened in 1970 with the old Hidalgo County jailhouse being renovated into a museum. In 2003, a new two-story building was designed by a world renown firm located in British Columbia that specializes in museum design. A tour of the museum starts on the second floor in with an exhibit going back 75 million years ago to the Cretaceous era, when South Texas was under the ocean. When visitors step off the elevator to begin their tour, they are greeted by a skeleton of a Mosasaur, a giant water lizard hanging from the ceiling. Rankin said the bones for this prehistoric creature have been found all across the globe – from China, Nuevo Leon, to Matamoros to Corpus Christi, Texas. In the corner is a replica of a giant Columbian mammoth that roamed the area once the land rose above sea level. As visitors leave the prehistoric area, they enter a diorama of the life of the Coahuiltican Indians, hunters and gatherers, who live in and roamed the area in search of food. Another diorama is found in the area depicting the early ranch life during the Spanish Colonial period. The dioramas were painted by Jan Driesen, one of the top three diorama artists in the United States. The Spanish Colonial period also has models of the galleon ships sailed by the
Spanish explorers who plied the waters of the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of the Rio Grande Valley. It was these ships that were thought to bring the first horses to the New World. There is also information about a Spanish shipwreck that occurred in 1554 off the coast of Port Mansfield. The wreck was located in the 1970s and brought to the surface providing much insight into the lifestyle of the sailors who sailed these ships Although there had been earlier attempts to colonize the Rio Grande Valley it was not successful until 1749 when Jose de Escandon led an exploratory expedition to determine the best sites for Spanish settlements and Indian missions. Two years later, in 1751, he returned bringing colonists to settle selected sites along the river. Because Texas was still part of Mexico at that time the newly explored territory was given the name, Nuevo Santander and included sites on both sites of the Rio Grande River. “Few people who come to the Valley realize what an important part in our nation’s history the Valley has played,” Rankin said. “While history books record only a few of the happenings in the Valley, many events that took place in the Valley had an unexpected impact on our nation and the world.” Other displays include highlights of the Mexican Revolution, the French rule of Maximillian and Carlotta, the Texas Revolution, The Mexican-American War, World War I, the Civil War and World War II. People may not realize the Valley had a direct impact on the United States joining into World War I. President Woodrow Wilson was trying to maintain a policy of isolation, letting Europe fight its own war.
Germany, fearing U.S. involvement in the war, developed the San Diego Plan, designed to get Mexico to aid in getting Mexican Americans living along the border to rise up and kill the Anglo citizens living in the area. What happened then? Visit the museum for the rest of the story. Fort Brown and Fort Ringgold established in the Valley on the border with Mexico were important in quelling bandit raids and were the last two cavalry forts in the country. Because these forts were still active at the beginning of World War II, the cavalry soldiers trained at these forts were shipped to China,
India and Burma during WWII to open the road into China controlled by the Japanese. In 2013 the American Alliance of Museums accredited the museum, saying it was of the “highest professional standing, for educational and public services.” The museum is located at 200 N. Closner, caddy-corner to the Hidalgo County Courthouse parking lot. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors. The museum is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call (956) 383-6911.
