Casa del Valle Ladies Christmas Luncheon helps colonia families
When I received a call from Norma Moe at Casa del Valle RV Resort about a Ladies Christmas Brunch, I wasn’t sure what to expect – or how a male would fit in with a room full of ladies at a brunch. But when she said it was the park’s food drive kick-off event to help the children and families in a local colonia, I said, “I’ll be there Saturday!” And I’m glad I did. What a treat! As soon as I walked in the door of the rec hall at Casa del Valle I knew this was going to be really special. The decorations were amazing – all creating the theme “Down Candy Cane Lane.” Sandy Tegen and Norma Moe, cochairs of the brunch planning committee explained how the brunch and the food drive came to be. Several years ago, some of the ladies at Casa del Valle attended a Christmas brunch hosted by someone else outside the park, and they decided they could do their own brunch. But they wanted to do it with a purpose. So, they decided to use the brunch to gather food donations to help the children and their families in La Mesa Colonia in the Alamo area. “We wanted it to be meaningful to get everyone’s hearts and minds into the Christmas season and to help those that are less fortunate,” said Moe. I’ve always said, “If you want something done right, put the ladies in charge.” See CASA DEL VALLE LADIES pg. 11

Christmas at the Museum
Christmas is a season filled with activities, and many of the museums in the Rio Grande Valley have a part in it. One of the newest events is a new exhibit of 200 nativity sets on loan from Demaris Swint to the Alamo Museum. The collection of the Alamo resident represents 50 years of gathering them and includes sets not only from this country, but also from Mexico, Peru, India, Africa and Russia. It all began in the 1960s when Swint, still in high school in Massachusetts, received a
miniature nativity set from Germany. She started collecting creche scenes for her two children and later her three step-children and then grandchildren so that they would know the true meaning of Christmas. After that, at home and when traveling, she would see a set and “I would have to have that one,” Swint said. And the collection just continued to grow, usually buying at least one each year, which was frequently augmented by gifts from relatives and friends. The indoor free-standing sets range in size from a couple of inches to about
two-feet tall, while there are even larger outdoor sized ones. The collection also includes about 35 nativity ornaments of Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus to hang on the family Christmas tree as well. One set from India has an elephant, while another from Kenya, Africa is inside a large gourd. One full nativity scene is similar to a Bethlehem settlement house and attached barn. The materials in the creches range from straw to gilt wood. Also history indicates that it was St. Francs of Assisi who began the nativity tradition in 1223 with a play using live performers to recreate the scene with the Christ child. In time the inaugural display spread throughout Europe. She also has a bit of a controversial modern millennial dress nativity with three “Wise Men” arriving by Segway See MUSEUM pg. 21
This unusual nativity set is from Kenya, Africa that uses a unique container.

Christmas Parade kicks of Hidalgo Festival of Lights
The thunderous sound of Mannheim Steamroller’s “Carol of the Bells” provided the sounds of Christmas from in front of Ramon Ayala’s home in Hidalgo on Friday night; the lights adorned his house and yard and flashed on and off in sync with the pulsating popular Christmas hit. In front of that house, across the street and down the road, thousands of people waited in anticipation for the City of Hidalgo’s annual Illuminated Parade that officially kicks off the month-long Festival of Lights. “We haven’t missed one since we started coming down here,” said Jane King, who sat across from the Ayala home and

right in front of the entrances to the Festival of Lights. “It just keeps getting bigger and better each year.” Jane and her husband Barry are somewhat experts when it comes to parade. As part of the Shriners International, Barry was one of those who used to drive one of those clown-like tiny cars that became a staple in Shriner parades. He would drive those vehicles as much as three times a weekend in a Shriner’s parade somewhere near his Michigan home. “We are parade people,” Jane said. “And we really enjoy this one. It’s really beautiful and the festival is fun.” See CHRISTMAS PARADE pg. 4

DECEMBER 7, 2017 CHRISTMAS PARADE
From pg. 3 Barry and Jane live in Tropic Star RV and MH Resort in Pharr. They were joined by Pittsburgh native, and fellow Tropic Star resident Buffie Pardue. “I don’t think I’ve ever been to a Christmas parade in Pittsburgh,” she said. “I don’t even think they have one – but I definitely won’t miss this one.” The parade, which moved along Texano Drive, had dozens of illuminated floats, from Toy Story themes to Disney princesses and more. Area schools were also represented by their marching bands, school dancers, cheerleaders and other local organizations. Children screeched as they saw their favorite cartoon characters come to life – and got even louder as some parade participants handed out candy, T-shirts and other goodies to those who waited patiently to enjoy the beautiful, and well lit, parade. “This is our favorite holiday,” said Linda Ayala. Linda is the wife of Ramon Ayala, known as the “King of the Accordion,” Ramon has recorded more than 113 albums and has won four Grammy Awards. Additionally, Ramon has been featured in 13 movies. A legend of Norteño music, Ayala is one of the most recognized and best-selling artists of this genre of Mexican music. Three other houses are illuminated similar to Linda and Ramon’s home – those of their children. “This all started with just one strand of lights many years

ago and it’s grown, just like this festival.” Near the end of the festival each year, the Ayalas, the City of Hidalgo and the Hermes Music hold a Posada where as many as 10,000 low-income children will receive a Christmas present. This year, the Posada will be held Dec. 20, kicked off by a ribbon-cutting event and then the presents for the children. During the entire festival, Linda said, people will come to their front gate with questions about their lights. “We just love the holiday and you can’t imagine how many Winter Texans come up and talk to us and ask all sorts of questions,” she said. “We love them so much.” The weather was close to perfect, around 72 degrees – a delightful day compared to Christmas parades in Saginaw, Mich., near the Kings’ home. “I haven’t seen snow since 1990,” Barry said. “That’s good.” Barry especially enjoyed seeing the RGV Shriner Jokers go by early in the parade with members dressed in clown outfits. The Shriners are well known for their Shriners Hospitals for Children, a network of 22 non-profit medical facilities across North America. Children with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients’ ability to pay. Following the more than one-hour parade, people packed the festival grounds. The theme this year is Toyland and light-

ed displays included Minions, several Star Wars scenes and characters, dinosaurs and more. Local organizations set up to sell food in one area, offering tacos, hot dogs, corn in a cup, doughnuts and other goodies. Rides, highlighted by the looming ferris wheel, sat in another area. In between the food and the rides were dozens of illuminated displays, entertainment, Santa’s Station and more. The trolley tours, a huge favorite among visitors, began the next day. These tours will take guests on a path throughout the area to see the more than five million lights and nearly 500 displays. There is
also an option for dinner reservations prior to the trolley ride. The festival will run until Dec. 31. There are two tour options available, one that is the tour only, and another that is a dinner, concert and trolley tour package. Here, visitors will take a narrated tour aboard a train or trolley and learn a little about the history of Hidalgo. The dinner tours include a roast beef meal complete with musical entertainment. The dinner takes place in front of City Hall from Dec. 2-19. Call (956) 843-5311 for more information or to make reservations.
The entrance is all aglow as visitors enjoy the Hidalgo Festival of Lights on Texano Drive.

Seeing things a lot clearer at the Don WesWhat Flea Market There’s a diamond in the rough sitting they have to offer is nothing short
in Donna. It’s called the Don Wes Flea Market. Now, maybe it’s the words “flea market” that gives people a stereotypical vision of a flea market. That’s not the case at the Don Wes. In fact, if you visit, you’ll feel that your stereotypical vision has recently undergone Lasik surgery and you will clearly see that Don Wes is not your typical flea market. “You’re not going to come here and find just the typical flea market items,” said Debbie Fitzgerald, owner along with her husband Jim for the past 20 years. “There are high end knives, an air-conditioned restaurant where you can get a great burger, billiard items and shuffle sticks… items you won’t find at other flea markets. There’s Wisconsin cheese and Amish jams. There’s a barbershop here seven days a week. There’s even a dog grooming service and a western wear shop.” Don Wes has been around as a flea market for the past 40 years. One of the buildings they use is an old barn; the market used to be a farm. “This place has been around for 100 years,” Fitzgerald said. “We want everyone to realize that we’re here and show them what we have to offer.”

of amazing. The stories behind some of the shops are even more amazing. Ginger and Greg Aronhalt run the Shadow G Indian Jewelry store. On display are dozens of different necklaces, rings, bracelets, buckles and other pieces of jewelry that are made by Navaho or Zuni Indian tribes in New Mexico. Zuni and Navajo jewelry and pottery are still a major part of trade for the tribes. Thousands of visitors travel to northeastern New Mexico every year to see the ancient dwellings and learn more about the Zuni Indians. If they want jewelry or other artifacts, they don’t have to make that trip. They just need to visit Shadow G. When the Aronhalts make their annual trek to the tribal lands to stock up on Zuni and Navaho jewelry and other products, they don’t go just with a list of things for the store. Along with them are several item requests pre-ordered by many of their customers, collectors of certain types of jewelry, or maybe dream catchers or carvings. Many of them follow a certain jewelry maker and are always in the market for a new item that the artist may be creating. Effie Calavaza is one of those jewelSee DON WES pg. 16

WINTER TEXAN TIMES From pg. 1
These ladies certainly know how to do it right! The event was festive and fun. The ladies had fun playing a “right-left” game as Tegen narrated a crazy story about Mr. Wright (Right?) running an errand for Mrs. Wright while trying not to get lost. I was so relieved to learn that he was successful and didn’t get lost after all. There’s nothing like getting in trouble with the good wife. Whew! Adding just the right mixture of fun with a purpose, the ladies heard a presentation by Peggy Phillips, a Winter Texan from Bibleville (and Minnesota), as she explained the meaning behind the candy canes we give at Christmastime. This was a nice reminder of the symbolism behind one of the many traditions we enjoy at Christmas to help us remember the “reason for the season.” Each of the approximately 120 ladies attending the brunch purchased a brunch ticket and brought a food item donation for the families. (Did I mention that the breakfast was marvelous? Yes, the ladies even fed me too, and I was happy to donate to the cause.) Many are also making monetary donations as well. The ladies at Casa del Valle will be gathering more food and monetary donations until
Dec. 15 to help 20 families from La Mesa colonia. If you’d like to donate, contact Norma Moe at 605-212-7932. Or just drop off your donation at the park office. The ladies are also doing a toy drive for the colonia children. And the “Texas Grandmas” quilters from Case del Valle have made 20 quilts that they will present to the families. What a wonderful, busy group of ladies at Casa del Valle! That’s what I love about Winter Texans. You are wonderful people!

What is Your Park Planning For Christmas?
I’d like to know what your park or group is doing to make Christmas special for those less fortunate. Call me at 956-580-7800 or email me at news@wintertexantimes.com to tell me about any events you are planning, and we’ll cover as many as we can. Or, after you hold your event be sure to send us photos and a brief description of your park’s “Operation Christmas” events so we can share your stories in the newspaper and online at www.wintertexantimes.com. Thank you for making Christmas just a little merrier for so many underprivileged children in the Rio Grande Valley. God bless you all!

Ladies Christmas Brunch
Pictured are some of the almost 120 ladies from Casa del Valle RV Resort who attended last Saturday’s Ladies Christmas Brunch in the park’s rec hall.
Welcome back, folks. It seems like it’s been forever since you were here with us enjoying the great weather and abundance of fun activities in the Rio Grande Valley. While it’s been a Jim Brunson busy summer, we are always eager for a new Winter Texan season to begin.
Don Wilson remembers when he and his wife Jeni were making their first stint as park managers a few years ago at Bentsen Palm Village RV Resort in Mission. They oversaw the park, which has approximately 245 RV spaces. “The park would be full and there would be a waiting list of as many as 30 people wanting to get in,” Wilson said. “That’s a good problem to have.” The Wilsons, who moved to the Valley from Las Vegas, then took a few years off to travel in 2011 and came back in

From pg. 6 ry makers who has a huge following. Her line of “Effie C- Zuni” is probably the most widely recognized of Zuni artists, handcrafting her “serpent” patterned jewelry, an unmistakable pattern sought by many collectors. Greg Aronhart has several pieces remaining from Effie C. According to him, the jewelry maker has retired and is no longer making jewelry, so he expects the final pieces he has to be sold fairly soon. “Her stuff is incredibly popular,” he said. “Now that she’s not making any more, people are going to want to get their hands on anything that has her name attached to it.” Sharon and Glen Lemke run G and S Sales. If you’re looking for a card game, a board game, dominos, bingo, shuffle sticks, dart boards, Pokeno, Uno – and the list goes on – this is the place to check into. “If we don’t have it, we can get it for someone,” said Gina Lemke, who is running the “Game Room” while her husband runs the tables they have for sale. “I grew up playing games and my mother used to love games.” Gina added that many people come in looking for shuffle sticks, so he has a large quantity in stock, and is always ordering more. She can also special order gloves for a growing Winter Texan sport – pickle ball, where the more serious competitors will have gloves custom made for their hands.
One lady walked into the store looking for boxes for her dominos and the store had two types. Gina Lemke then when on to talk a little about the history of the domino game “42,” which was introduced into the U.S. in Waco, Texas and her dad was a “42” champion. Taking up a major part of the building – a wing that was actually empty for a short time – is the delicious world of Papa’s Kettle. Run by Debbie and Jim Strum, visitors can find Amish and Wisconsin cheese, Amish jams and coffees, summer sausages, roasted nuts, popcorn, lemonade and a literal smorgasbord of cheese, meat, snacks and other not-so-easy to find items anywhere else. Among the cheeses include three very hot ones – the ghost pepper cheese, the Scorpion cheddar and the Caroline reaper, cheese made with the world’s hottest peppers. But there’s also provolone, baby Swiss and some of the more common cheeses, mostly from Wisconsin. The jams are from Ohio and the largest Mennonite/ Amish county in the nation. To top it off, everyone should try the Boetje’s mustard, a brown mustard that is not only the perfect complement for the summer sausage, but is also a wonderful alternate spread for sandwiches. The market is open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 6:30 a.m. (in time for breakfast) to 4 p.m. and is located at 3210 Expressway 83 in Donna. If you want to clear your flea market vision, take a visit here – it’ll be well worth it.

Victoria Palms Restaur
Just a hop, skip and jump off Interstate 2, nestled within the Victoria Palms RV Resort lies the Victoria Palms Restaurant – a virtual diamond just off the beaten path. Actually, it’s just a hop and skip off the beaten path (you don’t even need the jump), and a visit to this restaurant will be worth every second, and every dime you pay. Camilla (my 13-year-old daughter) and I visited the restaurant right before Thanksgiving – two days later we were there again (with one of Camilla’s friends Ximena) for their Thanksgiving buffet – which had all the delicious traditional fixins’ for the holiday, but also mixed in a few tongue-tantalizing Cajun dishes – like jambalaya and Cajun turkey. (They had the common – and amazingly moist – regular turkey there as well.) The girls enjoyed sampling several things – Ximena especially tore into everything potato while Camilla was a roll and turkey girl. It was an amazing display of a wide variety of food and people just kept coming in. The reason we were there on Thanksgiving – and I love to cook on Thanksgiving – is because this restaurant wowed both of us just two days earlier as Camilla and I stopped in for lunch. We’re both glad we did. As usual, my daughter jumped straight to the breakfast menu – and they serve breakfast anytime. She ordered two eggs, over medium, sausage, hash browns and French toast. Just a few seconds after they placed the dish in front of her, while I was done talking to the chef, I turned to ask her how the sausage was – I didn’t need an answer; they were gone and she
was chewing away with the grin of a Cheshire cat. What registered the highest for her, however, was the French toast – she described it as “soft, sweet and tasty.” She saved it for last and said it left a satisfying taste in her mouth afterwards. I ordered the barbeque chicken with corn on the cob, Texas toast and baked beans. Yup, this was no “use your fork” meal. It. Was. Awesome! The barbeque sauce was a little tangy, a little sweet and deliciously messy, even though the tender chicken could easily be cut with a fork just as well. The baked
beans wer the corn w a mess by perfect br we’re goi the Victor the hustle and skip a The Vi 602 N. Vi burgers, t You can a something away plea

al Cowboy Poetry Rodeo in Hot Springs, S.D. in 2007. He has performed at many venues throughout the Midwest, Texas and the northwestern part of the country. Entertainment will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m. Lunch combos will be available from Ace’s Barbecue and Jason’s Deli for $5. This year’s Welcome Back Party will feature vendors who will be introducing Winter Texans to some of the Valley’s top attractions. Featured entertainers at the Welcome
Back Party will be Cactus Willie & The Drifter, Keys & Strings, and the Grey Rock Band. Casterline’s uncle, Lester Flatt of bluegrass fame, inspired young Charles to learn to play the guitar. After serving four years in the United States Marine Corps, Casterline began to pursue his career in music. Over the years, Casterline has played with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Ray Price, Bill Anderson, and Billy Walker to name a few. Later, he formed his
own band, playing lead guitar in the Cowboy and The Hobo Show with Bob Selby and Wil Kelly, who was the upright bass player, performing in theaters, rodeos and various events all across the country. Cactus Willie was also featured on the Midwest Country Theatre show in Sandstone, Minn., filmed for the RFD-TV network doing a tribute show to Willie Nelson. In 2017, they were featured performers for a PBS show called Pure Pluck in Hibbing, Minn. Today semi-retired, “Catcus Willie” lives in Brownsville during the winter months and in Minnesota during the summer playing at local venues. This winter

WELCOME BACK PARTY From pg. 1
Welcome Winter Texans!
Catcus will be playing at various venues on South Padre Island and Port Isabel. Wil Kelly, aka “The Drifter” grew up in Michigan. Employed as a fluid engineer for a large company in Minnesota, at age 33 after attending a blue grass festival caught the bug to play the banjo. After years of playing banjo he later moved to the upright bass, for the Minnesota Bluegrass Association and he joined the Cowboy and the Hobo Show in 2006. Kelly who is a polished entertainer, known for his keen and funny wit, with songs like “I Just Don’t Looked Good Naked Anymore,” may surprise the audience with more than a laugh or two throughout the show. Bob Selby, who plays the rhythm guitar, may not be with the Cowboy and the Drifter show at this performance, as his wife Brenda recently became ill, and they are hoping to get to the Valley very soon. Rick Sanchez and Joel Garza are known professionally in the Valley as Keys & Strings with both having a diverse background in music and experience, performing in clubs and venues across the country. Sanchez was born and raised in Chicago, beginning his music career there. He also traveled the Midwest working the lounge circuit, clubs and colleges. In 1985, Rick moved to the Rio Grande See WELCOME BACK PARTY pg. 28

scooters as they are delivering Amazon parcels, and one visitor taking a selfie of him and the baby Jesus in the manger. Until now, the nativity sets were packed in boxes and plastic tubs until brought out for the Christmas season in her farm home off Tower Road. She has been living in Alamo since finding her late second husband in 1999, two years after her first husband died. She moved from Little Rock, Arkansas to be the wife of a goat farmer, who also had other animals on the farm. In fact, she and her grandchildren here still have the donkey and some chickens. But this holiday season, Swint decided to offer the nativity scenes to the Alamo Museum, where through the month of December they are on display along with the famed Galleria of some 1,600 Angel figures. The museum, located at 130 South Eighth St., is open from 9 a.m. until noon and 1 to 4 p.m. daily. For more information call 956-961-4398. Quinta Mazatlan Other museums in the Valley also have some special activities and exhibits. One of those is Quinta Mazatlan in McAllen, which has several holiday events, starting with the Perula Winds Concert and Santa in the Park on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. The event features a little of Mozart’s
Marriage of Figaro, Klughardt’s woodwind quintet music and plenty of Christmas carols Cost is $3 per person. Santa’s Animal Forest Fest is set for 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 16, with a snow flurry machine, performances by youth choirs, storybook stations, inflatable animal characters, crafts and photos with Santa. The fees are $5 for kids and $3 for adults. Discovery Days for Families are going on all month long with the hours of 11 a.m. to noon and 2 to 3 p.m., to decorate the nature tree on the Dec. 9 and 23; water color of naturescapes on Dec. 27; Thorn Forest Skulls To Bones To Fur & More on Dec. 28; Feather Fun Foto nature walk on Dec. 29, and Survivor Skills with rope making and more on Dec. 30. The fee is $3 per person. Quinta Mazatlan is located at 600 Sunset Drive in McAllen. For more information call 956-681-3370 or check the website quintamazatlan.com. Historic Brownsville Museum At the Historic Brownsville Museum, 641 East Madison St., a Miniature Holiday Village is on display through Jan. 6 with more than 500 Department 56 ceramic pieces of figurines, animals and lighted structures. Brett Marshall & Friends Benefit Christmas Concert moves to Port Isabel with retro theme Along with Marshall, the lead vocalists in-
Popular Valley musician Brett Marshall will head up a fun, retro-themed Christmas concert on Dec. 17 at 4 p.m. followed by a second performance of the same concert at 7:30 p.m. This year, the event will be held at Fishers of Men Lutheran Church, located at 603 S. Tarnava Street in Port Isabel. With a $10 minimum contribution per ticket, the concert proceeds will benefit the We Love Laurin Special Needs Trust, which assists disabled McAllen dancer Laurin Huber with her ongoing medical care expenses. Two years ago, the concert raised around $8000 for Miss Huber. Entitled Brett Marshall & Friends Retro Christmas Party, this year’s concert features a 1950s theme, and also a segment of Christmas songs from around the world. “Besides the many favorite Christmas songs people remember from the 1950s, we also wanted to emphasize how global Christmas really is,” said concert organizer and soprano vocalist Carolyn Porter. “We hope to promote a sense of unity as we celebrate Christmas together in song.” Popular local musician Brett Marshall, known all over the Valley for his diverse piano stylings and smooth baritone vocals, serves as music director of the event. He leads an assortment of talented vocalists from South Padre Island, Port Isabel and Laguna Vista who round out the cast of this festive, annual event.
clude soprano Carolyn Porter, alto/mezzo Lisa Kinsolving, mezzo-soprano Sara Steele, tenor Paul Cardile, tenor Ron Fuqua, baritone Dale Ziegler and tenor Harold Clark. Percussionist Dave Boughter and choral group Valley Voices will make guest appearances. Concert attendees are urged to get their tickets early, as seating is limited. Tickets will be available at Paragraphs Bookstore on the Island or at Fishers of Men Lutheran Church. Tickets for this charity concert may also be reserved by calling Carolyn Porter at 612-309-2651.

From pg. 17 dressed as a Christmas present. (She changes her costume weekly so go and see what she is wearing.) Inside, people were eating or waiting to be served “all-you-can-eat” pancake dinners. The meal is a bargain, costing only $2.50 for pancakes and coffee. Applesauce, eggs, sausage and ham could be purchased to go with the meal for an additional $0.25 each. Many people were choosing to add eggs or meat to their meals but the crew in the kitchen had them ready and the line kept moving efficiently. Darrell Gullickson, of South Dakota, who was running the dinner, told the Winter Texan Times the park had been doing the dinner for as long as he remembered. I told him it was at least 40 years because my father and step-mother, Bill and Ernestine Gerald, had lived there when they first became Winter Texans, and I could remember taking my young children over there for pancake dinners. Now I have great-grandchildren! Gullickson laughed and said things had improved since the early days when pancakes were cooked in electric skillets. Now the park has a special grill that can cook up to 24 pancakes at a time in just a couple of minutes. That helps keep the line moving smoothly. In the kitchen, an experienced cook team worked to get the dinners ready for the crowd. Warren Ries and Jim Hartrick
were cooking pancakes, while Ann Campanella cooked sausages and Bruce Kielback cooked the eggs. Others were serving coffee and taking orders. Gullickson then asked me if my children were still in the area. I said one daughter lived here along with her two sons, one of which had three children. He invited me to bring them all back one day for pancakes and a picture of the four generations eating Lemon Tree RV Inn pancake dinners.
Sausage anyone?
Ann Campanella cooked sausages for those who wanted a meat addition to their meals.

Pearl Harbor Day Ceremony planned at VWMT
“It’s been an amazing journey but in late 2018 or early 2019 the entire Veteran’s War Memorial of Texas will be completed,” stated Col. Frank Plummer (Ret.) US. Army. The journey began in 1988 when a friend told him the veterans of McAllen should place a statue of a World War II veteran in Archer Park to remind residents of their sacrifices.” While Plummer agreed with the idea of remembrance of the sacrifices made during World War II, he wanted a memorial that would teach school children about the sacrifices of all those who had served to give the United States of America the freedoms that it now enjoys. Shortly after that conversation, he visited
Las Vegas. While walking around the city he came upon a large mound of dirt with a stream of water shooting from several large tubes at the top. The water was shooting into smaller tubes in smaller mounds of dirt with such precision that none of the water was wasted. Mesmerized by the accuracy of this unique fountain, Plummer sat and watched it for a couple of hours, while forming the concept for the Veterans War Memorial of Texas in his head. The spurting water would represent the men and women who defended and some who sacrificed their lives for our freedom and liberty and independence. The returning water represented the freedom and independence earned through these sacrifices so the American people continue to enjoy

freedom and independence. Plummer returned home, and with a group of 12 other veterans began planning an impressive war memorial that would attract people not only from the Rio Grande Valley but all over the United States and internationally as well. The first step was to acquire the land. The committee led by Plummer went to the McAllen City Council. Then-mayor, Othal Brand, told Plummer he had plans to convert a piece of swampy land near Ware Road into a site where a new McAllen Convention Center would be built. Because an attraction would be needed to enhance the site, Brand promised Plummer five acres on the west side to build the memorial. Col. Plummer told him it would take nine years of fund-raising before the project could start. If there was not enough funds at begin at that time the land would be returned to the city. He and his committee began talking to city administrations and veterans’ groups all over the Valley to explain what was planned. Nine years after the concept was created, construction began on the first of five pieshaped wedges. It was decided to construct the World War II memorial first. Statues of military personnel who played an important part in that war along were sculpted and bronzed, and glistening beautiful granite walls were erected bearing the names of those who died in that war etched in stone as a permanent memorial. When the World War II section was completed, work began on the section for the Vietnam War and the Korean War. Then came the all other wars section, which represented the American Revolution, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, the Mexican-American War and more modern wars such as the Gulf War and the fighting in Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan. A large 105-foot tall black spire was then erected in the center representing the sacrifices made by those who served to defend our country and to protect the freedoms and values this nation represents around the world. Currently under construction is another All Wars section (the fifth wedge of the pie), that features the children of the Valley. Children will be invited to write essays about significant moments in history. The stories selected will be etched into 36 granite panels for everyone to read with the child’s name, school and principal. The others will be placed in a website for use by teachers, historians and the general public. will be a record for all “These stories time about how the wars affected United States history and its citizens,” said Plummer. erations to read and learn about the sacrifices made by American military personnel to keep this country free,” he added. “That is, unless someone decides to rewrite history and tear it down as is happening to Southern history across the South.” Colonel Plummer served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam before retiring in the Valley in 1975. Almost 30 years after he first conceived the memorial, Plummer, who is now 92, and the memorial committee are looking for volunteers who are willing to continue management of the memorial and organization of the two major programs honoring veterans. To volunteer or for more
www.wttrgv.com information, call (956) 631-2511. The first program celebrates Veteran’s Day. This year’s Veteran’s Day service was held, Nov. 10 with schools participating in the event. Pearl Harbor Day/9-11 Remembrance The other program planned at the Veterans War Memorial of Texas is a Pearl Harbor Day/9-11 Remembrance to be held on Pearl Harbor Day, Dec. 7. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. The public is encouraged to attend this ceremony to honor and remember the bravery and sacrifice of our military and first responders lost in these horrific attacks on our nation. In addition, WWII veterans will be honored for their service and sacrifice during WWII. A special tribute is planned for these members of

our “greatest generation.” “This program was planned for the Veterans Day ceremony, but due to bad weather it was canceled, so we are asking all WWII veterans and families to attend,” said Jan Hartzog, one of the event’s planners. In case of bad weather this program will be moved indoors to the Convention Center. For further information or questions call Col. Frank Plummer at 956-631-2511 or Jan Hartzog at 956-605-3486. When Col. Plummer turns over management of the memorial, he will be able to look back with pride on the wonderful memorial that has taken 30 years to create. Through the perseverance of a man who had the dream and the veterans and city officials that helped him, McAllen has a war memo-
rial that can proudly stand beside any war memorial in the United States. However, Plummer is quick to say he was not the only person responsible for the memorial that honors war veterans. It could never have been built without the support of the cities, schools, veterans organizations, citizens and Winter Texans of the Rio Grande Valley and Texas and the nation who helped raise over $2 million needed to create the memorial that will stand for decades, if not centuries, to attest to the patriotism that exists in the City of McAllen, the Rio Grande Valley and the nation. For those who have not yet visited the memorial, it is located on 29th Street and Col. Plummer Drive on the west side of the new McAllen Convention Center.
