From the Publisher Welcome Back Party Rescheduled
Jim Brunson
The Mission Chamber of Commerce Welcome Back Winter Texan Party has been rescheduled for tomorrow,
starting at 11 a.m. It’s not everyday we can say an event had to be rescheduled due to snow – at least not in the Rio Grande Valley. But that’s what happened last Friday when parts of the Valley received a light snowfall. It didn’t last long, but it wasn’t exactly the typical “chamber of commerce” weather one expects when you come down for the winter. But as some of our Winter Texan friends noted, it wasn’t cold enough for the snow to stick and “We didn’t have to shovel any snow.” The Welcome Back Winter Texan Party at the Mission Chamber of Commerce will be held from 10:45 a.m.-2 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 15 with live entertainment outdoors at the Mission Market Square, which is adjacent to the Chamber building located at 202 W. Tom Landry. The event will start at 10:45 a.m. with a flag ceremony and introductions. Entertainment will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m. and featured entertainers will be Cactus Willie & The Drifter, Keys & Strings, and the Grey Rock Band. Rich Bellert will be emceeing the event and entertaining with cowboy poetry throughout the event. The Winter Texan Times is sponsoring the Welcome Back Party and we will have lots of prizes and giveaways at our booth, including show tickets for some of our Wintertainers™, gift certificates from local restaurants, RGV Vipers basketball tickets and more. So be sure to stop at our booth to register. The Mission Chamber has also lined up some nice items from Schlitterbahn, and Brick Fire Pizza, T-shirts and other door prizes. Of course, there will be lots of information about some of the local points of interest as well as tours. Lunch combos See FROM THE PUBLISHER pg. 23

Victoria Palms focuses on helping others even more this Christmas
Victoria Palms Activities Director Lori Fanaselle, left, and Janice Hardy, stand by the Victoria Palms Giving Tree.
Victoria Palms is in the Christmas spirit of giving. Currently, the Donna resort has put up its annual giving tree, with the goal of helping provide gifts to children in foster care throughout Hidalgo and Cameron counties, as well as families who are part of Mabel’s Clinic in Nuevo Progreso, Mexico. The green tags on the tree, located inside the recreation building, are designated for families who seek help from Mabel’s Clinic. Mabel’s Free Clinic provides free medical and dental care, optometric care and minor eye surgery for the people of Nuevo Progreso, Mexico, who otherwise could not afford these services. The clinic also supplies household goods, and school supplies. The clinic services 14 schools and several orphanages in the Nuevo Progreso area and medical teams
from both the United States and Canada will visit to lend a hand at the clinic. Missionary and resident Dick Turner will bring everything that’s collected to the clinic on Dec. 19. Each red tag has on it the name of a child who is in foster care somewhere in Hidalgo or Cameron County. It also has the child’s gender and something they would like for Christmas. The names were brought to the park by pastor Chris O’Loughlin, who also serves as pastor of the Cowboy Church in Santa Rosa. O’Loughlin brought in the names from an organization called Blue Sunday, founded by Janet Magee in Harlingen. All year long, Blue Sunday works with foster children and abused children. The organization began in 1994 with 20 churches and has grown to include See VICTORIA PALMS pg. 18
Entries to be accepted for 12th Annual Mission Quilt Show
It’s first-come, first-in as the Mission Historical Museum prepares to accept entries beginning Dec. 19 for its 12th annual Mission Quilt Show. Entries will be accepted in three categories: hand-quilted bed quilts, machine-quilted bed quilts, and wall hangings. The show is open to all quilters, both Winter Texans and year-round residents. Quilts and wall hangings exhibit entries must be ready to hang with a sleeve for display purposes. Entries are accepted on a first-in, first-accepted basis. Because of limited space, the museum reserves the right to
close entries before the deadline. This will allow for the best possible presentation for all entries. “It runs anywhere from 20-22 quilts to the mid-30s depending on the size and how many we can fit in,” said Vernon Weckbacher, archivist and curator for the museum. “This is the 12th year and there’s always a lot of interest in it.” To allow for the broadest representation, participants may submit only one item per person. Any quilt entered in this show within the past five years is not eligible for entry this year. The quilts will be See QUILT SHOW pg. 27

Del Puschert played with King of Rock & Roll Del Puschert, who has been playing saxophone since he was 3, fondly remembers the night he was working in a nightclub in Texarkana back in 1954 when a young man wearing a red mackinaw pushed through the doors of the club and asked for an opportunity to sing with his band. He told Del he had just cut his first record and was on his way to Shreveport, Louisiana, where he was to appear on “Louisiana Hayride.” Since 1953 Del had his own band that played society type music at the Texarkana supper club. Because of the extremely cold weather that night, business was slow, so Del said it was okay with him if his manager approved. The manager agreed so the young man sang the song he had just cut as his first record. The song was “Blue Moon over Kentucky” and of course, the young man was Elvis Presley. After the performance the band, Elvis and a group of employees from the club went out for biscuits and gravy at a local all-night diner. When Elvis’ car would not start, a local TV newscaster offered to put him up for the night since he had no money. It was not long before everyone in the music world knew who Elvis Presley was. But Elvis never forgot his friends and was loyal to them. He often stopped at the
club where Del worked when he passed through Texarkana. On one visit, Elvis asked Del, whom he called “Daddio,” if he would like to go on tour with him. Del hesitated because he had been on the road touring before and knew how hard it was for musicians to make money. At one time, he and the band had only enough money to buy a sack of beans to eat and he had decided it was time to give up touring and stay in one location. Still, the idea of going on the road with Elvis appealed to him so Del decided to go. It was an exciting time because Elvis’s popularity was gaining momentum and the crowds of fans were waiting long hours to get in to see him. Del recalls a show in Miami when Elvis had a 1 p.m. matinee show and the girls had started lining up outside at 2 a.m. Because his dressing room overlooked the street Elvis could see the long line of girls. He opened the window, rolled up his pants and waved his bare leg out the window at his fans who went wild at the sight of Elvis’s leg. Later that evening, Del was backstage when fans stormed the stage and tried to pull Elvis off the stage and tore his clothes off. A band of policemen had to rescue Elvis from the girls. But safely back in the dressing room, Elvis took a pair of scis-
sors and cut the remainder of his pants and shirt into pieces and threw them out the window to fans. Del still has pieces of the pants and purple sports jacket Elvis was wearing. Later, when he opened a barber shop in Maryland, he had them framed and hung them on the wall as a conversation piece. As Elvis popularity skyrocketed, some of the notoriety wore off on members of the band. People would come up to him and ask to shake the hand of the hand that shook Elvis’s hand. “It was an exciting time,” Del said. “Being part of the scene where thousands of girls were yelling and trying to tear the clothes off the stars they considered to be larger than life was fun.”

Swinging the nights (and some days) away The Swing Street Band is on the road again, all throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Started by Winter Texans, the band has evolved throughout the years and is currently made up mostly of active and retired music educators from around the Valley, plus a few Winter Texans. Consisting of five saxes, four trumpets, four trombones, piano, bass, drums, guitar and
female vocalist, several of the musicians are actually directors of award-winning high school bands from the area and bring a wealth of the talent and experience to complete the full big band sound. The band plays music ranging from the early big band days of Glenn Miller’s “In The Mood,” to the music that will bring you back to the days of your high school dances and sock hops.

The Griffin Grill: A wond When I first walked through the entrance to The Griffin Grill, I was quite pleasantly surprised at the nice décor and atmosphere of this small, but not too small restaurant. Very nice! Clean as a whistle too.
My next pleasant surprise was the menu. Such a wide selection that you just don’t see at the chain restaurants anymore. Texas Nachos, ceviche, guacamole and shrimp cocktail are just a few of their appetizers. Then there are the steaks, fish and chicken entrees. In the mood for something else? They also offer several burger choices, Paninis, sandwiches, pasta dishes, salads and soups. Of course, in South Texas they definitely offer Mexican food. Save room for dessert because you’ll love their cheesecake (New York, mango or strawberry). They also have wonderful Mexican Flan, tiramisu and Chocolate Lava Cake. I’ve struggled for three days to decide what I’m going to feature from The Griffin Grill. There are just too many
good items to write about. I ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and corn. Delicious. I was intrigued when chef and co-owner Antonio told me that anytime someone orders that, a few minutes later the restaurant can hear the meat being hammered away with a tenderizer in the back – I just had to hear that, and there was no doubt about it; that’s how fresh the plate is. I also realized I had already reviewed a chicken fried chicken before, so out of guilt (and since I was eating alone) I ordered the chipotle chicken pasta and ate it at home for a late dinner. It was amazing – and when it comes to Italian food, I’m kind of a snob since it is my favorite. But that’s wherein lies the problem – after talking with co-owners Rick and Antonio, I want to try other things (well, everything) – like the enchilada suizas, or the Griffin Burger. I also tried the ceviche...and I wanted to try the buffalo shrimp and the... well, you get the picture Every tantalizing taste was fresh and terrific. What’s amaz-

derful dining experience ing about this restaurant – located in the middle of a shopping plaza – is the wide variety of foods. From Italian to burgers to Mexican.... and it’s not just your normal fare of food. The presentation is as amazing as the flavors When the ceviche came out, after just a couple bites it was clear that there was something special, something different about this appetizer. It had a flavor I couldn’t quite put my finger on and when I asked, my suspicions were correct, there was a secret ingredient! Unfortunately,
it remained a secret. That’s how they roll at the Griffin Grill, food with fabulous flavor. The chipotle chicken was creamy and the mushrooms and onions and cheese and pasta were mixed in a way that every flavor stood out. Not one single item overwhelmed the rest. Antonio is an incredible chef who previously owned an Italian restaurant in the Dallas area. Rick has been in the restaurant and hospitality business for many y e a r s . And the two of them
have teamed up to deliver a superb dining experience where customer service and wonderfully prepared and food rise to a level that exceeds expectations – and all at modest menu prices. It’s no wonder that The Griffin Grill has been named one of the area’s best restaurants. Do yourself a favor and plan to enjoy a wonderful meal at a wonderful (modest) price at The Griffin Grill, located at 1906 E. Griffin Parkway in Mission. Now open for dinner. VICTORIA PALMS From pg. 1
more than 7.4 million people on five continents during the National Blue Sunday Day of Prayer where churches are asked only to take a moment during their service to pray for abused children and for those who rescue them. Jamie Graham is the assistant director, and also a Cowboy Church member. “Victoria Palms wanted to reach out to different families and children in the area,” said O’Loughlin, who has pastored the Cowboy Church since 2008 and Victoria Palms since 2009. “I’m just so happy with what God is doing within Victoria Palms – not just being a Winter Texan
www.wttrgv.com closed community but extending beyond their own community to help people throughout the Rio Grande Valley.” O’Loughlin holds service at Victoria Palms every Sunday at 9 a.m. and Bible study every Wednesday, also at 9 a.m. But the Victoria Palms giving doesn’t stop there (read the related story on the Linda and Bill Beltram couple and their Pokeno donation). The resort has decided to adopt the Chacon family, a local family that has faced a series of devastating blows – financially, legally and physically – over the past year. The family’s father was deported to Mexico about a year ago; 20-year-old Jaquelyne Chacon was dealing with extreme joint pain and exhaustion before being diagnosed with acute

lymphoblastic leukemia; and along the way, they lost the land their trailer was on because they couldn’t keep up payments and now live in a one-bedroom small house – all five of them. “There’s a lot of need all around us,” said Lori Fanaselle, activities director for the park. “We thought we would take on more of that and see how much we can help others. Victoria Palms is collecting money for the family, asking church attendees and anyone willing to listen to donate just $1 week. After the first week, the resort had collected more than $200. The money collected will go toward helping the family cover medical expenses. But they are also looking to fill other needs, providing
food, household goods, a bunk bed and more to their newly adopted family. “It’s always exciting to see people ministering to extend further than the four walls; to see people take action upon their faith to make a difference in the world. To see the Kingdom of God expand we have to do our part and the people we are around first. It’s a wonderful thing to see those individuals living in the park take action upon their faith and share the love of the Lord to those in need.” For more information on any of Victoria Palm’s Christmas projects, or to find out how you can help call (956) 4647801. ‘Barefoot in the Park’ rescheduled at Harlingen Community Theatre Harlingen Community Theatre has rescheduled performances of Neil Simon’s “Barefoot in the Park.” Due to lighting problems, last week’s shows have been rescheduled for Dec, 14-17 at the theatre, located at 1209 Fair Park Blvd. in Harlingen. The theatre’s stage lighting system suffered major electrical problems and had stopped working. Repairs were being made earlier in the week and the show had been rescheduled for this weekend, Thursday through Sunday. All tickets previously purchased will be honored for the rescheduled performance and the theatre asks that attendees bring their tickets for the Box Office to exchange them. Barefoot in the Park premiered on Broadway in 1963 starring Robert Redford and Elizabeth Ashley. When the play was adapted for film, Redford was still cast as the male lead while Jane Fonda starred as the female lead. The play opened in 1963 and closed in June 1967 after 1,530 performances. It
was Simon’s longest running hit and is the 10th longest running non-musical play in the history of Broadway. The play was nominated for three Tony Awards. The storyline focuses on a newlywed couple, Corrie and Paul Bratter. Their first home is an apartment on the top floor of a building in New York City. During the course of four days, the couple learns to live together while facing the normal daily routine. Corrie wants Paul to become more easy-going – as and example, to run “barefoot in the park.” Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday. Doors open for ticket sales one hour prior to curtain and seating begins 30 minutes prior to curtain. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students 18 and under. There is also a $2 transaction fee for credit/debit cards. The play is directed by Kathy Eunice. For more information call the Harlingen Community Theatre at (956) 412-7529.

QUILT SHOW
From judged by a panel of independent judges, with ribbons awarded for first, second and third places in each category. Best-ofShow and Viewers’ Choice ribbons will also be awarded. “I don’t know if I can say there’s been any one favorite of mine; there are many that I really like,” Weckbacher said. “Some it’s because of the pattern, but others it may be because of the colors. There is such a wide, wide variety.” Quilts may be pre-registered by submitting an entry form, which is available at the museum. Entry forms will be accepted at the museum from Tuesday, Dec. 19 through Wednesday, Jan 31, during the hours of 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Saturdays. The museum will be closed Dec. 25, 26, and Jan 1. The quilts themselves may be delivered on any date during this time,
pg. 1 through the Jan. 31 deadline. If you would like to enter your quilt, you are urged to register early, because space is limited. “I can’t tell you how many hours are put into these quilts but I can tell you that pretty much the price someone would pay for a quilt wouldn’t equal a fair wage – there’s a lot, an awful lot that goes into them,” Weckbacher said. “There’s a high level of craftsmanship. Some people do it by themselves. Others will get together like a quilting bee and sew different parts. It really is amazing what they make.” The show opens Saturday, Feb. 10, and runs through Saturday, March 17. An awards reception and Turning of the Quilts program will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16. The Mission Historical Museum is located at 900 Doherty in downtown Mission. Admission is free. For information, call the museum at 956580-8646.
