From the Publisher Texas Trails Christmas Luncheon

Thank you to Pat Julian, Sharon Swanson and all the ladies at Texas Trails for inviting me to the Texas Trails Ladies Christmas Jim Brunson Luncheon last week. In addition to enjoying a wonderful luncheon and visiting with some of the park residents, we got to hear about some of the projects the park residents are doing to help the children of the Rio Grande Valley. Also attending the luncheon were Pharr Police officers J.C. Aguirre and Daniel Garcia, who spoke to the group about the many different projects the police department conducts to help the community. The Texas Trails ladies organize a project each year to gather Teddy bears to donate to the Pharr Police Department to help with their Blue Santa program. This year, the Pharr Police plan to give away 1,000 toys for children living in the colonias or who have been identified by school counselors as children in needy families. That’s not all. The Texas Trails ladies also donated many Teddy bears and stuffed animals and made 24 quilts for the children receiving cancer treatments at the Vannie Cook Children’s Cancer and Hematology Clinic in McAllen. On hand to receive the donations were Victoria Guerra, director of development for Vannie Cook, and Yadhira Huerta, social worker at Vannie Cook. It is wonderful to see the spirit of giving and caring that abounds in our Winter Texan communities. Thank you Texas Trails Ladies and thank you to all Winter Texans who help with toy drives and food drives, making quilts and blankets, knitting baby clothes, and all the other kind acts of service you provide to bless the lives of the children and the poor here in South Texas. I so appreciate your time-honored values, your industry and your caring for others. You are truly a blessing to the people here in the Valley. God bless you all, and best wishes for a joyous Christmas! You have done so much to make the season brighter for others. Thank you!

El Valle Del Sol donates 1,000-plus to Tim’s Coats

A bumper crop in agricultural terms is a crop that has yielded an over-productive harvest. While it can also be a source of problems, such as when there is insufficient storage space, that definitely wasn’t the concern at El Valle Del Sol last week. Residents from El Valle Del Sol, located at 2500 E. Business Hwy 83 in Mission, donated more than 1,000 coats to Tim’s Coats, a project that has been going on for 34 years between KRGV Channel 5 and Chief Meteorologist Tim Smith, in conjunction with the Southwest Dry Cleaners Association. During those three decades, the project has brought in and donated more than 140,000 coats. The coats are distributed to the needy through Catholic Social Services and the Salvation Army. “It’s going to be a bumper,” Sharon Haynes said in front of a well-attended event. “We told you we have 1,023 coats – well that’s gone up since then, we have

1,030 now.” Smith was joined on stage by Haynes, several volunteers and Bill Stocker, owner of the Valley’s Palace Cleaners. Each jacket is washed and cleaned by Palace Cleaners. “Winter Texans have been a big part of Tim’s Coats for a long time,” Smith said. “It started with Bentsen Grove more than 25 years ago and now there are several parks and resorts collecting coats for us every year. El Valle Del Sol’s contribution is huge.” Jackets were in piles across the stage at the Peppermint Palace building. The building is known for being a dance hall for many years and is used as the park’s recreational building. There were also several knitted snow hats, scarves and other wintery items. “We will take these coats and bring them to one of my cleaning plants, they See TIM’S COATS pg. 24

KRGV Channel 5’s weatherman Tim Smith is all smiles as he receives a donation of over 1,000 coats from Winter Texans at El Valle del Sol for the annual Tim’s Coats drive.

Winter Texans help with local toy drives

Christmas always brings out the spirit of giving and this year is no exception. Many Winter Texans across the Rio Grande Valley entered into the spirit of the season and have provided thousands of gifts to brighten the faces of children who might not have received much or anything at all this Christmas. Police departments in many Rio Grande Valley communities are deeply involved in coordinating toy drives and other special events for children during the Christmas season. Brownsville For example, the Brownsville Police Department has been coordinating a toy drive for children for many, many years with support from numerous organizations, agencies, businesses and local Winter Texans, which culminated in the annual party last Saturday for more than 2,500 kids. The Brownsville Chamber of Commerce is among the supporters of the drive, and at the its Dec. 14 mixer, members were required to bring a toy. See TOY DRIVES pg. 26

Lindley Creek returns with the bluegrass sound

Lindley Katie Greer probably doesn’t remember the first time she picked up an instrument, just like she doesn’t remember the first time she took a step or said her first word. Those distinctions, however, aren’t far apart in dates. Greer, 20, is the lead singer for Lindley Creek, an acoustic family band from Missouri showcasing, according to their website, “beautiful, traditional bluegrass and gospel music, soulful, soaring lead vocals, soothing family harmonies, intricate instrumental breaks and original songwriting, Lindley Creek presents compelling acoustic music and a sincere family sound.” The band has returned to the Rio Grande Valley with a bustling schedule. They started visiting South Texas in 2010. “This is our eighth year and we love it here,” said Kathie Greer, the mom of the four person group that includes her daughter Katie, son Jase and husband John. “It’s laid back, the weather is wonderful and we love hanging out with the Winter Texans.” Katie said that her daughter started playing instruments when she was four. She first stepped on stage when she was 10. “She doesn’t remember not playing music,” Kathie said. Now Katie is the group’s lead singer who plays the mandolin, electric guitar and fiddle. Also a budding songwriter, Lindley Creek includes some of her original compositions in their repertoire. She is always working on new song ideas by making notes on her phone then she’ll pick up the guitar and get to work completing a new song. She cites Allison Krauss, Carrie Underwood, Tori Kelly and Mandisa as her vocal inspirations. Jase, 22, plays the fiddle, cello, saxophone, electric guitar and more. He will sing lead vocals and oftentimes harmonize with his sister. Kathie said they love to make people laugh. With their Christmas show, she said, there’s a Santa bit that comes out with the purpose of doing that. “We like to do originals and make sure when people leave, they are having a good time – maybe feel a little less burdened.” An interesting fact with the band is that Kathie and John didn’t start learning to

Creek play until the children did, so they could all play at the same time. The strategy has worked wonderfully for them. “We change up our shows every year and we are in the process working our show for the first of the year. Right now we are doing an all Christmas, holiday and winter show, old-time Christmas. When we play ‘My favorite things’ it’s a really cool mountain sound. Being from the Ozarks, we like that.” The group is especially gearing up for the Faith, Family, Freedom combination event with two other family bands, Williamson Branch and the Punches Family. The event will be held at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Jan. 25 at Winter Ranch in Donna. “We have been doing it down here for seven of the past eight years,” Kathie said. “It’s a big deal for us and a great event.” Lindley Creek RGV Schedule December 21, 7 p.m.Trophy Gardens, Alamo January 2, 7 p.m. Aladdin Villas, Mission January 3, 7 p.m. Gateway Park, Raymondville January 7, 7 p.m. Park Place Estates, Harlingen January 8, 7 p.m. Palm Shadows, Donna January 9, 7 p.m. Eldorado Acres, Palmview January 12, 7 p.m. Bentsen Palm, Mission January 17, 7 p.m. Ranchero Village, Weslaco January 18, 7:15 p.m. John Knox Village, Weslaco January 19, 6:30 p.m. 1015 Park, Weslaco January 20, 7 p.m. Tropic Winds, Harlingen January 21, 7 p.m. Palm Resaca, Brownsville January 25, 10am & 3pm Faith, Family, Freedom, at Winter Ranch, Donna January 28, 6 p.m. Alamo Palms, San Juan January 29, 7 p.m. Hidden Valley Ranch, Mission January 31, 7 p.m. Bentsen Grove, Palmview

Eastgate residents help the homeless Ladies make mats from grocery bags

The Eastgate Mobile Home and RV Park ladies in Harlingen have some outof-the-box thinkers. Well, maybe they should be called outof-the-bag thinkers. Last season, park resident Marilyn Stovin shared an idea she had seen on the hobby and do-it-yourself website Pinterest and brought it to her Friday doughnuts and coffee group. The idea was to create plastic mats, roughly 3 feet wide by 6 feet long for the homeless to lay down on and keep them off the ground. The bags would be cut into strips, then linked together and rolled into a ball. The ladies would then crochet the ball into a mat, just like any blanket made of yarn for example. They needed about 500 bags to complete just one mat and the time commitments were immense. “We may have made 10 all season,” said Margaret Bergen, event coordinator for the park. “They are sleeping mats that you can sleep on and they are very strong and will last. Some of the ladies make them with a lasso at the end so they can wrap them up and make it easier to carry.” They gave some of the mats to the food pantry. Bergen said after the latest cold snap, the group started thinking about the

homeless and needy. “We need to help them all year but especially during the winter months,” Bergen said. “Wendy and Jim from the food pantry came and told us about all the services they offer their clients. Everything is available for them, from food for their families, to clothing and household items. The homeless are given warm clothing and items that will help them make it through the coldest of the winter days. Many of the Eastgate Mobile Home and RV Park residents get involved within the community at places like the food pantry, Loaves and Fishes or tutoring for children, along with many other ways, she said. “We went out and gave some of the mats to a few of the guys, our clients, and they were so excited to have them and have their picture taken,” Bergen said. “The mats will give some protection from the ground and the elements during these cold and damp winter days. Most of us are so blessed to have all the comforts in life. We must remember to help the less fortunate by donating to the closest shelter or organization.” Bergen said she has gone to visit the food pantry and was amazed at not just

the organizing but the effort that those working there go through to find the items for those who are in need. “If someone needs pants or a certain shoe size, they will go find it,” she said. “It was a wonderful thing to see how it works and

the care that the food pantry has for our community and how our donations we’ve collected through Bingo and other events are being put to use. We always need to remember those who are in need.”

LaDawn excited about second season in the Valley

LaDawn was 14 when she had her first public performance. She wasn’t planning on performing, but she said she wasn’t given a choice. “I sang a duet in church,” said the singer, who has returned to the Valley for her second season. “I had been playing the piano and this new fellow came to church. He was about 19 or 20. Mom had him over for dinner and afterward I was playing the piano and he was singing – he had a really nice voice.” He asked LaDawn if she would rather accompany him on the piano or sing with him. “He didn’t give me a choice,” she said. “I decided to sing but I was deathly afraid of speaking in public. I still get a little nervous. I have a show coming up and I’ll have nerves throughout the day as it gets closer but right before the performance I’ll be fine.” For someone who still gets those butterflies from getting on stage, you would never realize it the way she interacts with her audience. Actually, she says it’s the interacting that she enjoys the most during her performances. “I had a show once with just 11 people there,” she said. “But they were an incredSee LADAWN pg. 25

Christmas Extravaganza at Harlingen Museum ongoing

The annual Christmas Extravaganza at the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum will continue through Jan. 2, according to Forest Garling, volunteer and gift shop coordinator. “This year there are 19 Christmas trees in the two front galleries of the museum representing a variety of Christmas themes. Different clubs and organizations in Harlingen participate in the annual event by decorating a variety of colorful trees,” said Garling. “Over 1200 people attended the Gala reception held Dec. 7 but for those who missed this event, the Christmas Extravaganza will be on display until Jan. 2.” For newcomers to the Rio Grande Valley, the museum also tells the story of Harlingen’s History. In the historical park behind the main galleries there are three historic buildings including the home of Lon C. Hill, founder of Harlingen, The old Harlingen Hospital from the early 20th century, and the original El Paseo Real Stagecoach building. Although it was once called “Six Shooter Junction” because it was a frontier town where everyone needed guns because of the bandit raids, or “Rattlesnake Junction” because of the number of rattlesnakes that greeted settlers and railroad builders, Hill named the city Harlingen in honor of his friend Uriah Lott’s ancestral land of The Netherlands. Lott’s grandmother lived in Harlingen, Holland. Hill built the home in 1904 after his wife and ninth child died in a typhoid epidemic. It is furnished with period pieces of furniture. Hill family photos, old clothing and cooking utensils, some of which actually belonged to the Hill family are on display. Hill was known as a visionary “who had a finger in every pie” helping the development of the irrigation system to help the agricultural empire of the 20th cen-

tury. He had a specific interest in sugar cane. He was instrumental in getting the railroads brought to the Valley to move the crops to northern markets. The old Harlingen Hospital opened in 1923 and charged a fee of $5 per day for patients. The hospital, which was moved to the museum in 1978, showcases a doctor’s office, dentist office, birthing room, pharmacy and two patient rooms. Surgeries were popular and many Harlingen residents would entertain themselves by spending their Saturdays peering in the windows of the surgery room. The Paseo Real Stagecoach was built in the 1850s on the bank of the Arroyo Colorado near Rio Hondo. It was a way station on the Brownsville to Alice route. Rooms were $0.35 to $0.50 cents and meals served consisted of jerked beef, beans, tortillas and milk. Until 1904 when the railroad arrived, Harlingen mail was delivered by stagecoach to the inn. As a 1976 bicentennial project, students from Texas State Technical College built this replica on museum grounds of wood salvaged from the original inn. The Santa Rosa School Bell was donated to the museum in 1966. It was said the bell could be heard over two miles away calling children to school. The historical museum, currently under renovation, was the original museum started in 1967. The building was part of the old Harlingen Air Base and housed the Air Police Squadron and brig. Take time to visit this Harlingen treasure either to enjoy the spirit of Christmas by looking at the trees on display or to learn more of Harlingen’s rich history by touring the historical buildings. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. It is by donations but guided tours are available for groups on request at a cost of $2 per adult.

The Christmas Extravaganza at Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum features 19 beautifully decorated Christmas trees, each with a different theme.

Where good times If you haven’t experienced the Tilted Kilt, then you are missing out! Located on the south side of Expressway 83 just West of Ware Rd. in McAllen, this Celtic-themed restaurant offers a total sensory experience. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted by one of their beautiful and friendly Kilt Girls and ushered to a comfortable table. Surrounded by a warm pub-like atmosphere you also have a 360° view of multiple HD television screens streaming all the sports action you can handle. From classic pub fare to gourmet burgers, the menu is sure to contain something for everyone in your group. And if you are thirsty, have no fear! The Tilted Kilt offers a selection of more than thirty draft and bottle beers, as well as an extensive spirit selection. Their “Hoppy Hour” runs daily from 3-7 p.m. and then again from 9 p.m.- close and offers a selection of delicious appetizers. From their burger selection, the CLASSIC “BIG ARSE”® HAMBURGER is sure to appeal to all. You have your choice of cheese, number of patties or to make it a bit more healthy, you can have a Turkey or Spicy Black Bean patty! Their PUB CAESAR SALAD comes full of flavor as one would expect and for a bit extra you can add grilled chicken. When it comes to pub fare we suggest the OLDE DUBLIN IRISH STEW! Any time of year the tender beef pot roast, mixed with vegetables and a rich and hearty Guinness® beef stock served with a side of garlic bread is a delicious choice! If you like sandwiches we suggest THE ‘KILT® CLUB, or if you are in the mood for something different, try their CREAMY PUB PASTA! If you have a sweet tooth, their TILTED GUILT will complete any meal. Get into the Tilted Kilt, where they are eager to put a smile on your face and an ice cold beer in your hand. All across America, everyone agrees that “A Cold Beer Never Looked So Good.”®

will be processed and then we will distribute them,” Stocker said. “We had 1,200 to process the day before. Then we will take them to Catholic Charities in Harlingen, Salvation Army in McAllen and Harlingen, Sister Norma’s in San Juan and then some to the respite center where they are handling all the refugees.” Kitty Benton, a native from the park, knitted about 30 winter hats. Haynes said it’s something she has been doing for five years or more. While many of the jackets are from up north, some of them are purchased at Ropa Usada stores in the Valley with monetary donations from the residents. “They just do so much,” Haynes said. “It wouldn’t be possible without them.” Haynes said she has lived in the park for 19 years and has volunteered on the Tim’s Coats project for about 10. The key, she said, is to remind the residents while they are living up north to not forget about Tim’s Coats. “It’s amazing what these residents do

when it comes to helping others,” Haynes said. “They are always stepping up for any cause that’s going on.” Smith shared a story of a young person coming up to him at one collection site and telling Smith that he wanted to return the jacket. “Return it?” Smith asked. “Yes sir, I received it last year from Tim’s Coats but it’s too small now so somebody else can use it.” “There is such great enthusiasm inside the Peppermint Palace,” Smith said. “Everybody there seems full of energy and eager to help. “Oh my gosh I was so excited when I got the call from El Valle Del Sol. More than a thousand coats. When you think about it, that’s 1,000 people who will be warm the next time a cold snap hits the Valley, because of the amazing people at El Valle Del Sol.” Stocker said the donation is always a welcome one from the park. “It’s huge, just huge,” Stocker said. “So many people are blessed because of the care and the love of so many people, especially our Winter Texans. It’s amazing.”

She said there wasn’t a dry eye in the church that day. Almost three decades later, LaDawn and her husband are still happily married. They were blessed with six children, and despite singing being her passion, LaDawn realized her family was her first priority and she con-

Homeschooling also allowed her to spend time with her children, playing the keyboard, violin, and guitar. She also continued to perform when the occasion arose. A Canadian native, LaDawn divides her time between performing in Texas and visiting family, including five grandchildren, in Nebraska, Utah and Idaho. While the first half of her performing season in the Rio Grande Valley is com-

One is called “Sentimental Journey,” she said. “We are doing songs from the 40s on up to the 2000s. I really think people like the word ‘Journey,’ it sounds nice. Of course we start off the show with the song ‘Sentimental Journey,’” She also has a country show, claiming the Valley is “Countrified.” “I just want to sing what people want to hear and the Valley loves their country,” she said. TOY DRIVES

From The Brownsville department is still accepting toy and monetary donations, which can be dropped off at the police station at any time. The donations are used to meet requests from various agencies outside of the drive, who have children in need. In addition, several police officers volunteer to play Santa on Christmas Day and visit area hospitals to bring presents to young children who can’t be at home for the holidays. Pharr The Pharr Police Department began using a “Tips for Toys” program in four local restaurants with officers shadowing the wait staff and helping serve meals. It’s a win-win situation as the officers earn tips, while exchanging crime prevention tips with customers in the form of stickers and pamphlets. The special serving days over a month’s period is now in 10 restaurants and provides funds to provide $50 vouchers for about 1,000 students in 11 local elementary schools. Pharr officers are also participating with officers from other Mid-Valley departments in the “Shop with a Cop” program going on today, Dec. 21. It will include 20 to 25 special needs children, which has been expanded to include firefighters in the “Shop with a Hero” program. A Target grant has allowed shopping with 200 kids from the Vanguard Academy also. Funds collected or earned that exceed the goal are used for a Blue Guardian program to help about 20 fami-

pg. 1 lies who fall into dire circumstances. Winter Texans are aiding the Pharr drive by having collection points in their RV parks. Toy donations are still being accepted, some of which will by used by officers who run into kids on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day while on neighborhood patrols. Toys may be taken to the police department, which has two boxes out front. Weslaco In Weslaco on Friday, police received toys from Winter Texans at the Town Center along the freeway frontage road. Officers when called also will be going to 1015 RV, Pine to Palm Resort and Sun to Snow parks to pick up the large boxes left there for toys. Distribution is planned for this Friday, Dec. 22, at the police department when officers and firefighters will be joined by Santa Claus to hand out presents to about 2,000 kids between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Alamo The Alamo Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center is wrapping up its annual toy drive that benefits students in six local elementary schools. The chamber also conducts an elementary coloring contest in which winners receive new bicycles. Alamo businesses and Winter Texan park residents, including Alamo Rec-Veh, Royal Palms Mobile Home and Winter Ranch RV Resort’s Christian Ministries group provide the bulk of toys and funds. The Alamo Lions Club, which in-

cludes some Winter Texans, will join local police officers to distribute presents on Christmas morning to children. Toys are still being accepted at the police and fire departments for the Christmas delivery. Mission In Mission, the local Crime Stoppers organization is coordinating the toy drive

with backing from the Mission Police Department, which will be the site for this Friday’s big event and toy distribution. Children from 300 families are registered at the department to receive presents. Toys and monetary donations are still being accepted at the police department.

A large number of toys and money was collected at the Alamo Rec Veh Park for the Alamo Chamber of Commerce drive for elementary school students. Those showing some of the gifts include (from left) Carol Norman, Juanita Vess, Kay Rossa, Louise Schmitz, Pearl Hickemeyer, Park Manager Barb Hamel, Phyllis Brandt and Activity Director Linda Miller.
