From the Publisher Christmas Blessings
In today’s edition and other December editions of the Winter Texan Times we have published a series of stories about the generosity of WinJim Brunson ter Texans as they look for ways to bless the lives of others – especially the poor and needy – at Christmastime. This week you will read about Trade Winds and Mission Bell RV Resorts’ efforts to assemble Christmas gift bags for “the poorest of the poor” in Reynosa, Mexico. Coupled with this is the ministry of Scot and Cynthia Swafford, park managers for the two parks, who also make weekly trips to Reynosa to deliver food and the Gospel message to the poorest areas of our neighbors south of the Rio Grande. You’ll also see a story about W&I Resorts’ annual project to make hundreds of Christmas stockings for the Wounded Warriors. These dedicated ladies have made over 1500 stockings during the seven years they have been doing the project as they show their appreciation and provide encouragement for those who have sacrificed so much for our country. Another story in today’s issue is from Palm Resaca Resort in Brownsville, where the Winter Texan residents donate not only their money, but also their time, as they volunteer and give monetary and food donations to the local food pantry. Of course, they also – like Winter Texans all across the Valley – enjoy the festive spirit of the season as they decorate their homes, hold golf cart parades and go caroling to their neighbors to “make the season bright.” Previous stories include El Valle del Sol’s Winter Texan residents donating over 1,000 coats to Tim’s Coats, and Victoria Palms Resort’s gift drive for children in foster care and also their support of Mabel’s Clinic, which provides medical services for 14 schools and several orphanages in Nuevo Progreso, Mexico. These are just a few examples of the See FROM THE PUBLISHER pg. 20
McDonald House a place for support
A report on baby Roger’s recovery was brought by the Cardozo family of Raymondville when they visited Ronald McDonald House in Harlingen after using its facilities for a time.
The mission of the Valley’s Ronald McDonald House (RMH) is to allow parents and family to remain close by while a child is seriously ill in a hospital in Harlingen, one of only 288 facilities worldwide. The aim of RMH Charities-RGV (RMHC) is to have a place for parents to stay and also receive emotional support during a difficult time, says Cynthia Guerra, the house’s executive director. RMH serves families of newborn babies to those with children up to age 21. They also provide services to high-risk pregnancy women as long as they have someone 18 years or older with them. One of the favorite stories of help for Guerra is that of the first baby at the house, Andrea Pedraza, who with her parents, spent eight months here as her twin sister, Angelica, fought complications at both nearby Valley Baptist Medical Center and at Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Brownsville before passing away. See RONALD McDONALD pg. 27
Arguello’s the heart of McAllen Jam
McAllen Mobile Park’s Pat Arguello reminded me of a veteran boxer in the ring, diverting punches directed at her with smooth and graceful movements. A question would be aimed at her or about her, but like the cagey veteran, the response would be skillfully pushed to the side, more often than not to promote the talents of others. Arguello is humility personified. The entertainment coordinator for McAllen Mobile Park shared some of her story, but not without putting others in front of her on a regular basis. From talking about the jam (“it’s invitation only, my level and up,” she said, placing herself at the bottom of that list) to talking about her successes (“So many others out there have done so much more than me”), to talking about her ongoing battle with breast cancer (“I’m happy to be back, this is our last jam until March,”) the Iowa native who spent 20 years as a pattern maker in Chicago is soft-spoken, kind and a model for what being humble looks like.
Put her behind a cornet or trumpet, however, and you will see an amazing transformation as she rips off vibrant tunes with such confidence and electricity. And yes, that’s a tattoo on the outside of her right hand. “I got it so people can see the treble cleft,” she said. “She has a following and most of her closest friends are musicians,” said her friend, park resident and entertainment committee member Betty Denison. “She’s not only talented with her performance and voice but also with listening and knowing quality when she hears it.” Arguello’s love for music can be traced back to her dad who had a dance band. She continued to dabble in music, taking classes such as music theory. When she first started coming to the Rio Grande Valley, the first thing she did was check out jams. “I was here and went to several jams before I had enough nerves to play,” said Arguello, who is more introverted than extroverted until it comes time for music. “I was really nervous.” See MCALLEN JAM pg. 26

Leland Jones is no stranger to the country music business. He is the seventh son and youngest of 11 children – all who were musically inclined. His mom played the organ and his day played the fiddle. That more than likely had some major influence on Jones’ life. The results have been about 60 years of performing traditional country, western swing, bluegrass and gospel music. He continues to return to the Rio Grande Valley and perform here for four months. Leland was inducted into the America’s Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame on Sept. 1, 2017 in LeMars, Iowa. He felt honored and performed five shows for 30 minutes singing his most requested songs. Many Nashville performers are part of this organization and have appeared many times and crossed this same stage from Nashville and all over the United States. He began his professional career at age 12 where he performed, sang and played his borrowed guitar. He sang “Slowly” the then No. 1 hit from Web Pierce. His older brother Byron Jones took Leland to many shows, fairs and festivals. They performed as a duet, signing Wilburn and Louvin Brother style songs. In high school, Leland formed his own band, the Show Me Bluegrass Band, and played all over Missouri. “I thought we were pretty good,” he said. “And we were.” He was on Red Foley’s Ozark Jubilee in Springfield, Mo., doing many live radio programs, stage shows and television programs in the mid 50s and 60s. In 1963 his brother Byron opened the Farris Opry, Richmond Opry, Richmond Missouri and filled the Farris Theatre more than once on the same Saturday night for many years. Leland became a very important part of the Lee Mace’s Ozark Opry for three years driving the bus, performing TV shows on KRCG out of Jefferson City, Mo. and then doing 10 shows a week.

WT Activities Association plans tournaments and dance
The Mission Winter Texan Activities Association is gearing up for another series of fun tournaments for Winter Texans, and you’re invited to get your park to participate in the games. The activities being held this year include a pool tournament, golf tournament, bowling, and the annual Cabaret Dance held at Mission Bell Resort. This year’s fun begins with the pool tournament, which kicks off Jan. 5 with the Ladies 9 Ball Singles hosted at El Dorado Acres. The series of nine pool tournaments continues through Jan. 29 and is hosted by several different retirement resorts in the Mission area, including W&I Resort, El Dorado Acres, Bentsen Grove, Hidden Valley Ranch and Aladdin Villas. To register for the pool competition, contact Larry or Dawn Schrader at 956638-0506, or register at the resort the day of the competition. Registration fee is $2 per participant per event. Each resort that is a member of the Winter Texan Activities Association is permitted to have two participants or two teams. If your park or resort is not a member of the WTAA, it’s easy for them to join by calling Sharon Northedge at 956-6008629. The annual association dues are only $20 per park. Bowling Tournament The bowling tournament will be held Jan. 6, 7, 13 and 14 at IncrediBowl in Mission. Tournament participants receive a
discounted cost to bowl in the events. To register, contact Cathi Svetlecic at 816898-0635. Golf Tournament The 16th annual golf tournament will be held Saturday, Jan. 20 at Shary Municipal Golf Course. This is a four-person scramble with 7 a.m. check-in and 8 a.m. start. The cost is $40 per person, including green fees, cart, luncheon and awards and prizes. (No discounts for golf course members.) Team captains are responsible for registration and entry fees. Entry deadline is Jan. 4. Make checks payable to W.T.A.A. Bring registration forms and fees to the Jan. 4 meeting of the WTAA at 1 p.m. at Tropical Valley Acres club house. For more information and registration, contact Sharon Northedge at 956-6008629. Cabaret Dance The annual Cabaret Dance will be held at Mission Bell Resort on Feb. 13 from 7-10 p.m. Tickets are $7.50 per person. Music will be provided by Keys & Strings. For advance tickets contact Sharon Northedge, or purchase tickets at the door. Volunteers Needed The Winter Texan Activities Association needs park reps and volunteers to help run the tournaments and activities they are hosting this year. If you can help in any way, contact Northedge. Or if you want to learn more about what WTAA does before jumping in to help, attend the WTAA
meeting on Thursday, Jan. 4 at Tropical Valley Acres. The WTAA board of directors meets monthly on the fourth Thursday. There are perks for park reps, such as free tickets to the annual Cabaret Dance. If your Mission area park is not participating, talk to your park manager or activity director and see if your can get them to pay the $20 membership dues to allow your park’s residents to join the fun. (Residents at some parks pay the dues themselves, so they can participate.) Let’s keep a good thing going by getting your park to join and by volunteering. Every volunteer is important and appreciated. Member Parks So Far The parks who are currently members of the WTAA include: Aladdin Villas, Bentsen Grove, Bentsen Palm, Circle T, Fiesta Village, Rollin Homes, Split Rail, Sunlight, Wagon City South and Wintergreen Estates. The park you represent in these tournaments must be a registered member of WTAA. All park reps and others interested in these events are asked to attend the WTAA meeting on Jan. 4. This will also be registration day, so anyone wanting to register for any of these events – or to find out more information – is asked to come to this short meeting at Tropical Valley Acres where the event chairmen will be in attendance.

The recreation hall at Trade Winds RV Resort in Mission was filled with tables covered with small toys, such as toy cars for boys and little dolls for girls, along with puzzles, booklets of Bible stories in Spanish, and bowls of candy on Dec. 19. Approximately 40 volunteers – mostly from Trade Winds and Mission Bell RV Resorts – were manning the tables, filling plastic bags with simple dollar store toys and trinkets destined for more than one hundred children living in shacks in the poorest parts of Reynosa, Mexico. The bags were then delivered by Whitewater Ministries pastor Scot Swafford, his wife Cynthia and some of the Winter Texan volunteers to colonias in Reynosa on Dec. 20. Scot Swafford said the people living in these areas are “the poorest of the poor” and have very little of their own. Swafford founded Whitewater Ministries about 10 years ago when he and his wife and moved to the Rio Grande Valley from Kansas. Back in Kansas Swafford was a farmer and a banker. After visiting Mexico and seeing the poverty, he felt the need to help. Scot has also been pastor for the church services referred to as Whitewater Ministries, held at Trade Winds on Sundays for the past 10 years. The Swaffords are also the new activity directors for Mission Bell and Tradewinds this year. Swafford said 100 percent of the donations at the services go to the ministry in Reynosa where he holds Bible studies at five locations in the colonias. They do not have a church building there, and they typically hold their church meetings in Reynosa in someone’s front yard.
In the beginning, Swafford, and others who accompanied him, would fill backpacks with bags of beans. They would walk along through the colonias asking people if they believed in Jesus Christ and pass out the bags of beans. After a while, they were invited to hold Bible studies at people’s homes. Over the years the ministry, which provides bags of beans and animal crackers to those who attend services weekly, has grown. Swafford estimates there are over 700 children in the colonias being served. He said they buy the beans and animal crackers in bulk and divide them into smaller portions in zip lock bags with the help of volunteer members of the project. He estimates 300 to 400 pounds of beans are distributed weekly. At Christmas, a bag of rice is added as a special treat. But, noting that the only way out of the impoverished conditions for these children is education, Swafford said they also try to help as many of these children as they can with their secondary school education costs. In Mexico, he explained, the parents have to pay many of the school’s expenses if they want their children to go to school. The families have to pay for items such as school supplies, school uniforms, teacher supplies and even toilet paper. The cost is about $300 per child per year – an amount these families cannot afford to pay, according to Swafford. So, Whitewater Ministries funds school costs for about 30 children each year to give them an opportunity for a better life. The ministry has also helped these people in a variety of other ways, including providing medicine, medical care, and See WINTER TEXANS HELP pg. 23

Ladies Christmas Brunch serves others
By Bill Lang Because Norma Moe attended a prayer breakfast at Winter Ranch RV park in Alamo, just before Thanksgiving of 2013, dozens of families have benefited during the holidays from the annual Casa Del Valle food drive. Following that 2013 prayer breakfast, Norma was handed an invitation to an Advent breakfast at a private home in Alamo. Norma and four of her friends attended, and when the breakfast was over they came out filled with excitement and the spirit of Christmas. They didn’t just keep that joy to themselves. Instead they wanted to share, and take action. Upon returning to Casa del Valle the five met with the activity director and then park manager Marie Howard. Thus, the Casa del Valle Ladies Christmas Brunch was born The brunch is a time where many of the ladies can meet and socialize with each other. The brunch usually includes a program and the “Wright” game is played.
But the brunch means so much more – it is also the kickoff for the Casa del Valle food drive, which has become an annual event since the birth of the brunch. For two weeks, park residents donate money, time and food. This year on Saturday, Dec. 16, more than 1,500 pounds of food – yes, almost a ton – was delivered to the La Mesa Colonia church; toys were included. Twenty families were the recipients of the food, which consisted of non-perishable items, a bag of potatoes, carrots, apples, oranges and a ham. Casa del Valle Texas Grandmas made 20 quilts, one for each family, plus 20 bags used to carry the perishable food items. Maude’s (Carol Agnew) toy drive provided toys for each of the children. Hugs, thank yous, laughter and joy filled the day between the families, the children and those who delivered the good. The Christmas spirit was felt by all, and it all started with one little prayer breakfast.
Casa del Valle’s Ladies Christmas Brunch group and others delivered more than 1,500 pounds of food to La Mesa Colonia following their annual food drive.
W&I makes stockings for Wounded Warriors
Certificate of Appreciation and the Military Challenge coins Held by Dennis Carstensem and Linka Luthi.
It was a busy day at W&I RV Resort in Mission as some of the ladies folded and cut materials while others worked at sewing machines, all with one goal in mind – making Christmas stockings for Wounded Warriors. The ladies made more than 300 stockings last year that were donated to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. The stockings were given to soldiers in the Wounded Warrior Program to be used for Christmas 2017. The ones that the group started on Dec. 20 will be for Christmas 2018, said park resident Linda Luthi, who heads the Stockings for Wounded Warriors Project at W&I. More than 1,500 stockings have been donated to Fort Sam Houston for distribution in the seven years that the ladies have been working on the project, Luthi said. Luthi said many soldiers who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan are suffering from
Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome and are in a program run by the Brooks Army Medical Center in San Antonio. The idea was introduced to Luthi her by her friend, Sandy Carstensen, who during the height of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars worked with a group of ladies in Rock Island, Ill., to make stockings that were sent directly overseas to soldiers on the battlefields. After seeing the operation in Illinois and discovering that there were groups in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Spain and Germany creating quilts and stockings to be presented to soldiers, Luthi decided the ladies at W&I could easily do the same. She presented her idea and the project took off. The ladies have sewn at least three Wednesdays a month in the rec hall from See WOUNDED WARRIORS pg. 24

even paying for funerals, when they are able to assist. When the Swaffords decided to sell everything they had an come to the Valley and start a ministry, they had considered constructing a building in Reynosa to house their Mexican ministry, but became concerned that the cartels would take it over. So, they decided the need to buy food to feed the hungry people they met was more important. And at Christmastime, with the help of many Winter Texan friends, they are able to provide just a little bit of Christmas cheer for many children whom they fear would not have any Christmas gifts at all without their donations.

By working in an assembly line we can sew the stockings rapidly.” She pointed out the different types of materials used for the stockings. Some of the materials are Christmas-themed, oth-
ers have wildlife scenes or are plaid or have other patterns or subjects that might appeal to a man in the Wound Warrior program. The ladies do not fill the stockings with goodies. They make them and take them to Fort Sam Houston. There, another group will take care of what will go in them. Luthi will leave the park to return home in mid-March and will drop off the See WOUNDED WARRIORS pg. 25

DECEMBER 28, 2017 MCALLEN JAM
From Now she runs one of the most talent-filled jams in South Texas with the likes of Del Puschert, who plays the saxophone and had playing stints with the likes of Elvis Presley and Charlie Daniels. There’s also Howard O. Bedient, a master on the double-decker keyboard (whose range of song knowledge is profound, switching from old-time rock ‘n roll to a little bit of the 1980s Van Halen song “jump” during an intermission. “He is an amazing vocalist too,” Arguello said. “There’s so much talent up there and they’ve done so much.” Arguello has done quite a bit as well, even though it’s not easy to get her to talk about it. In fact, she didn’t talk about it, only texting some of her info in a couple days after we interviewed (maybe she thought she’s miss deadline?) Over the years she played with a concert band in Chicago, has performed in different church praise bands and played in the RGV Concert band for the past nine years. She’s also been seen with the Winter Texan Orchestra and recorded two CDs in 2011 of her cornet and trumpet playing, as well as her vocals. It’s been a harsh year for Arguello. Her husband died in June and a month later she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She still has six more chemo treatments. But through it all, her focus remains strong on music, and helping others in that arena.
www.wttrgv.com
pg. 1 “She is very encouraging to help those who are starting to perform publicly,” said Denison, who is an entertainment committee member. “She always does her best to help them, to make them better. She’s a highly organized woman and spot on when it comes to music.” Denison recently celebrated a birthday and said Arguello treated her to dinner. “We ended up going to a couple jams before, she added music to my day to make it more special,” she said. “But at each jam she would walk up to someone and invite them to this jam – there were a couple here today. Not only does she look for music and musicians she would enjoy but also looking for what the people in our park would enjoy, and helping the musicians get exposed to more people.” Nearly as the end of the interview, a park resident approached Arguello to let her know that a gentleman in attendance would be celebrating his 98th birthday on Christmas. As she turned back to talk, I asked her about what her biggest music success story was. After a pause and two or three comments along the lines of “those musicians out there have done so much more than I have,” she finally relented and talked of a time when she performed once on television, but it was a brief off the track moment for her as she once again diverted everything somewhere else. “This is our last jam until March,”
WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com
she said. “We have been doing it in November, December and March. Starting in November, 2018, though, we’re going to do it all through the season.” On this day, the talent was obvious. Trumpet player Dean Schilling played “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear” and “Oh, Holy Night,” Obedient sang “Just a Jigalo” to the delight of the jam packed rec hall, lead guitarist John Lavoie jammed out to “Jingle Bell Rock” and Arguello performed “Sugar Blues” during her
first performance and Al Hirt’s 1960s hit “Fancy Pants” for her second number.” As the interview ended, Arguello stepped back into her musical mode, looked around and then asked me a question - “Do you remember the gentleman’s name who is celebrating his 98th birthday on Christmas? I need to find out.” And she was off, once again looking to promote the park, the jam and someone else’s success story.

RONALD MCDONALD From pg. 1
“Andrea is very special to all of us because she and her sister weighed only one and a half pounds at birth,” Guerra said. “Today at the age of 18, Andrea is at Texas A&M University with plans of becoming a pediatric surgeon. She comes to volunteer (at RMH) and will be honored at our 19th annual Wild Game Feast on March 3 next year.” The fund-raising dinner will mark the 20th anniversary of the founding of RMH. And the event slated at the adjacent Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine will also honor the Frank Boggus family, who along with generous friends, were responsible for establishing Ronald McDonald House. More than 90 percent of families needing accommodations come for the four-county area of the Rio Grande Valley. And the vast majority receive the stay free, as they are unable to pay the normal $10 a night rate. Families need to be referred by an area hospital’s social services department. But physicians, nurses, social workers or even a parent of a sick child can also seek referral help through a hospital to use RMH. Most of the families served have children who are patients at Valley Baptist Medical Center, which provided the land for Ronald McDonald House at 1720 Treasure Hills Blvd. In addition to six bedrooms, the 9,000 square foot facility has a common area of a living room, dining, laundry, family/game, play and quiet rooms, plus a kitchen, pantry, storage and fenced backyard. Some food staples are provided, but families can make their own meals as well. Occupancy normally averages between three and four families a week. Stays last from a day to as much as several months, until the child is well enough to be released from the hospital. RMH has provided more than 14,100 nights of lodging for 3,500 families over the years. In addition, RMH Charities has established a family room at Valley Baptist and a similar room at Edinburg Children’s Hospital for those needing a rest break. The family rooms are open between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. The family suite in the Harlingen hospital has an attached bedroom, while the Edinburg facility, created in 2009, has three attached bedrooms. Both include a kitchen, living room and food provisions. More than 400 families a month on average use the family suites. RMH Charities-RGV is responsible for the operation and funding to meet the needs of families with ill children, using a variety of avenues of support. All funding remains for local use. Continuing financial support has come from the founding partner McDonald Restaurants in the Rio Grande Valley. It
accounts for about a quarter of the approximate $450,000 operating budget of RMH Charities. Also, Guerra said, businesses, corporations, foundations and individuals help support the program. She cited Southwest Airlines for regular support of many of the RMH events, especially the recent Light the House of holiday decorating that featured school students of various ages singing Christmas carols, and other entertainment. There were about 200 guests packed inside due to the inclement weather outside. Volunteers are the heart of RMH, ranging from secondary and college students to older adults, the director said. They help in administration, at the reception desk, help clean floors, dust, wash windows, bake cookies or cakes and cook meals for future use by families. Volunteers 18 and older are always needed at the family rooms at the two hospitals as well. Some help with the fundraising events too, including the annual dinner and a golf tournament. More that 5,700 volunteer hours were logged with RMH Charities. Winter Texans from some of the parks have made quilts, crocheted baby blankets and made baby caps, some of which are shared with the hospital’s maternity and pediatric units. Many of those involved have come from Ronald’s Angels at Fun N Sun Resort in San Benito, Tip-O-Texas RV Resort and Texas Trails RV Resort, both in Pharr, and Gateway Ladies Quilters of Raymondville. The director points out, “We are blessed with an abundance of gifts from complete strangers who drop off canned goods, toiletries, pull tabs, new and used clothing that generate funds for us.” The pull tabs from aluminum pop cans are collected in a competition among invited Valley elementary schools. The school with the most tabs wins a visit from Ronald McDonald to present his magic show. RMH Charities also has a clothing donation program with a Dallas company that places boxes at businesses and then collects the wearable items, for which a percentage is paid. “Near or far, everyone wants to give back to help others,” Guerra says, “and we’re blessed that because of the generosity of our donors we can keep families close during their time of need.” To find out more about Ronald McDonald House, its services, donations and volunteering, check the website at www. rmhcrgv.org or call 956-412-7200. Those wanting to volunteer can also stop by Ronald McDonald House in Harlingen or fill out an application at the website.
Volunteers play an important role in the Ronald McDonald House operation. Baking goodies for those staying at the house were (from left) Jae, Javi and Vanessa.
