Charlie Yow was 12 years old when he put his first plane together; it was a Sailplane, a non-powered, 90-inch wingspan balsa glider. “I think I flew it into a telephone pole,” he said. “I had to get out the broom to bring it back. You can’t buy one like that anymore. I had to put it together from scratch. Now you buy ‘almost ready to fly’ aircraft.” Yow is the president of the Tejas RC Club and will be one of dozens of pilots See RC PLANES pg. 35
Performers flock to Entertainers Showcase Being an entertainer is a tough business. Rusty Rierson drove from Wichita, Kansas to attend the 2018 Entertainers Showcase No. 1 at Park Place Estates in Harlingen on Wednesday, Jan. 10. The trip is about 900 miles and on any given day, Rierson said it would take him about 17 hours to arrive. That is “on any given day - under normal circumstances.” But it wasn’t a normal circumstance in this case. Most of the U.S. was just on the tail end of the coldest cold front in recent memory. Wichita already has average low temperatures in the mid-20s in January, but during these days the temps were fluttering around the zero mark. And as Rierson set off for his trip, his car heater stopped working. “I was freezing,” he said. “It was 10 degrees when I left and I was shaking so hard in my car – but I made it. I was stopping a lot more often to thaw out though.” That’s the importance of the two showcases run by Robert Ferguson each year. Artists with passion for the music – and See SHOWCASE pg. 23

Lone Star Jubilee All Valley RV Show’s attendance increases makes Valley tour Inspiration, laughter and fun is one description of The Texans in concert. That alone, should be enough reason to attend the annual Lone Star Jubilee as it makes its way through the Rio Grande Valley from Jan. 21 to Jan. 26 with seven performances along the way. Along with Sam Ray and The Texans family trio, bass vocalist David Little and Duke Mason – A Giant Of An Entertainer – only 46 Inches tall, will also be performing. Sam and Brenda Ray, and their son Curtis, will be returning for the 41st year to entertain the Rio Grande Valley. The Texans have won many awards in Branson, Mo. with a show including comedy and music. Curtis performs a popular skit as a “TV evangelist” and Brenda performs as her alter ego, “Bertha Betterthanyou.” The Texans were created in 1971 at Dallas Christian College as the Masters’ Four. The full-time family trio moved to See LONE STAR JUBILEE pg. 6
Since early in the Winter Texan season word had been spreading that there may be an increase in the number of winter visitors to the Rio Grande Valley. Salome Welliver became a believer this past weekend. Salome, the director of the All Valley RV and Outdoor show, and president of the RGV Chapter of Texas Recreational Vehicle Association, said it was visibly noticeable that there were a number of first-time Winter Texans at the show. An abundance of them, she added, were Canadians. “Because of all the new Winter Texans that showed up at the show, I would say the overall number is going up,” Welliver said. “There were a ton of Canadians and they were new. They were everywhere, looking at the new stuff, looking to buy, looking to get into a park suited for them.” “I don’t know what it was that spoke to them but I’m glad to have them.” Prior to the show, Welliver had said that there was an expectation that Winter Texans who had been displaced from the Rockport, Texas area or Snowbirds from Florida may pay a visit to the Valley and the forecast was spot on. Nashville recording star Billy Droze performs Friday in Mission If Billy Droze had any New Year resolutions that had to do with having the No. 1 song, and album, in the country, he can check that off his list. Done. From Louisiana to Alabama, then from the halls of La Joya High School he went straight to Nashville to pursue his music dreams. Now, Droze is back in some of his native ground as a top-notch bluegrass star. Droze’s record label Rural Rhythm Records just announced last week that Haunted By The Wind, the third single from Droze’s debut album “To Whom It May Concern,” had reached No. 1 for three weeks in a row on the Bluegrass Today Weekly Airplay Chart. The first three singles from that album have reached No. 1 and the album “To Whom It Man Concern” reached the top spot for most spins on Sirius XM Radio’s Bluegrass Junction station for December 2017. It’s definitely not a bad way to start the year. And now he’s back in the Valley, where he’s returned every year for the past 14 years to visit with his dad and perform for his South Texas supporters. Droze will perform a 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. show on Friday, Jan. 19 at the Border Theater, located at 905 N. Conway Ave. in Mission. Each show by the Grammy-nominated artist is two hours and tickets are $12 per person or $20 per couple. Winter Texans also receive a $2 discount with their park badge. The show will also feature Bob Droze and a special guest. Tickets can be purchased at the Border Theater or by calling (956) 605-1811. Droze said he has built a special relationship with many Winter Texans over the years. “They’ve seen me grow up and go from nothing to having a career and doing stuff I’ve always wanted to do,” he said. “They have been nothing but encouraging over the years. I always say I have 60 or more grandmothers here. They help out and volunteer at my shows and sell CDs – they are family.” Droze has a special knack for his music, which he says is similar to what country music was 20 or more years ago with a more earthy, organic style of music that isn’t industrialized, like most genres have been.
Billy Droze “I like the topics that’s sung in that genre too, like God, family and love – it’s why I started putting our records in that genre. When we assessed it, it’s a beautiful style of music,” he said. “It has been a beautiful launching pad to for Alison Krauss and Chris Stapleton and other mega stars that started in that genre of bluegrass.” Droze is excited about his finale at the Border Theater. He says that he puts on his biggest show of the season there, wanting to especially cater to the Winter Texans who have encouraged him over the years – and who will be following him as he continues to climb the steps of the entertainment world. Droze also said he keeps in touch with some of the teachers in the La Joya school district. “They knew what I wanted to do even back then,” Droze said. “I wasn’t like the rest of the kids there, I just wanted to play country music.”

Faith, Family, Freedom celebration is next Thursday
The eighth annual Faith, Family, Freedom celebration will be held Thursday, Jan. 25 at Winter Ranch Resort, located at 600 State Hwy. 495, in Alamo. The 2018 family band lineup includes some of the Valley’s top entertainers – Lindley Creek, The Punches Family, and Williamson Branch. There will be two shows: 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Advanced tickets are available at the park for $15. Tickets at the door are $18. “Faith, Family, Freedom is a celebration event. It is not political,” said Lindley Creek’s Kathie Greer. “It is a chance for everyone to be thankful for the freedoms we enjoy.” Lindley Creek (The Greer Family)
Williamson Branch
from Missouri is the host band and has been the only band to have performed in every Faith, Family, Freedom event since its inception on Feb. 16, 2010 at the Tropic Star RV Resort in Pharr. The founding bands of the event were Link Union (aka The Link Family, Lindley Creek and guest The Lindsey Family). The other bands that have performed at FFF over the years are The Punches Family, The Harper Family, The Farnum Family, and The Prowel Family. Each band will perform a concert showcasing their ability to entertain without the use of any pre-recorded music. Every performer sings and plays several instruments in this high-energy show.
The grand finale is a showcase of all the kids from each band forming a “super group” of young talent. Lindley Creek is an acoustic family band showcasing beautiful, traditional bluegrass and gospel music, soulful, soaring lead vocals, soothing family harmonies, intricate instrumental breaks and original songwriting, Lindley Creek presents compelling acoustic music and a sincere family sound. ALL VALLEY RV SHOW
From pg. 1 Prior to the show, Welliver had said that there was an expectation that Winter Texans who had been displaced from the Rockport, Texas area or Snowbirds from Florida may pay a visit to the Valley and the forecast was spot on. “There were some who had just rolled in and where they were just wasn’t their forever spot because once they get here, especially for the first time, they just want a place to put their feet down for a little bit,” she said. “People were looking for just about everything they need for their RVs – accessories, add-ons and the latest models,” Welliver said. “Most of the vendors had a great show and they were able to enjoy a couple of those frosty mornings since we were in a climate-controlled building this year.” Welliver added that just by guesstimating she could tell the overall numbers were up from the 2017 show, which was up from the 2016 event. Of course, there’s little rest when it comes to preparing for a show like this and Welliver was already thinking about ways to improve the total experience for next year’s event. “We’d like to get everything under the roofs and maybe fill the arena area with RVs,” she said. “Also I think we will try to get some parking trams to make it a lit-

tle less tiring and rough on the feet, especially to get people from the parking lot to the show area. EZ Go out of Mission was great by delivering golf carts and maybe we can do something more with them for the visitors.” June Ferguson got more than she expected – even though as of Monday afternoon she had yet to realize she had won a seven-day stay at Los Cabos Golf Resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Ferguson is from Montgomery City, Mo. and Welliver believes she may have filled out the raffle ticket with a land line phone number. “A lot of people thought that the raffle was just a joke and not real,” Welliver said. “It’s real, but we just can’t reach the winner.”

From pg. 11 Branson in 1983 and changed their name to the Texans. They began their full-time traveling ministry in 1999, performing more than 300 concerts a year, sharing the stage with speakers like TD Jakes, Charles Stanley, Jerry Falwell and Tim Lahaye, among others. After seven years of road ministry the group cut back and in 2009, created the Top of the Mountain Dinner Theater in Eureka, Ark. But the calling came calling again and in 2013 they went back into full-time traveling ministry but performed about 200 concerts a year, singing gospel music and putting on comedy skits. Duke Mason is a special performer because of his unique height of only 46 inches. However, his talent and charismatic personality bring a respect and dignity to his singing that only few are chosen to have. Mason sings, plays guitar, keyboard, bass and drums. Mason comes from a singing family. He began singing in personal appearances with his family when he was only 4 years old. At the age of 7, he met and sang with the world famous “Duke Of Paducah” at a state fair in Des Moines, Iowa. On several occasions, Mason has performed with legendary singing group, the Jordanaires. Since September 2000 Mason has

Known for his deep bass voice, Little formerly sang with the Schaefer Brothers quartet. The Texans were twice voted Branson’s Entertainers of the Year and four times selected as Branson Group of the Year. In 2015 they were named Gospel Group of the Year in the Valley Star Awards, hosted by Robert Ferguson in the Rio Grande Valley. A freewill offering of $10 per person is suggested. Marty Haggard brings Merle Haggard tribute to RGV Marty Haggard’s song Apple says “the apple never falls too far from its tree.” The phrase hits home for the legendary son of Merle Haggard. It’s obvious that Marty Haggard was influenced by legendary artists. Of course, traveling with his dad, considered one of the best country singer/songwriters of all time, sure didn’t hurt. Now Marty is making sure that everyone knows the influence his dad has had on him over the years with “A Tribute to
Marty Haggard
Merle Haggard – My Dad.” Marty and his “little big band” will make two stops in the Rio Grande Valley on Jan. 26 and 27. He will perform Jan. 26 at Tip O’ Texas, located at 101 E. Sioux Road in Pharr, and Jan. 27 and Carefree Valley Resort, located at 4506 N. Highway 77 in Harlingen. Tickets at the door are $30, advance tickets are $25 and can be purchased at martyhaggardtickets.com or by calling (318) 658-6780. The oldest son of Merle Haggard, Marty will share some of his dad’s greatest country music songs written and recorded. He will also share some stories of his memories growing up alongside his dad as he wrote and recorded those songs. Marty will be accompanied by worldclass musicians and the show will also include some of Marty’s original songs. Marty has had his own accomplished career, performing country music for 40 years, but about eight years ago, the love he has for his dad and his music inspired him to begin paying tribute. His dad died on April 6, 2016, on his 79th birthday. In 1979, Marty began touring with his own band, signing with Dimension Records in 1981. From 1983 to 1985, Marty toured with his dad, playing guitar and singing harmony. Marty signed with MTM Records in 1986 and released
“Trains Make Me Lonesome,” which garnered him a nomination as best new male vocalist. Marty signed with Critique/ BMG in 1995 and after some time decided to leave the Nashville lifestyle behind. In 1999, Marty and his wife, Tessa, formed Marty Haggard Music and Marty began writing and singing spiritual songs inspired by his life spent with his Grandma Haggard after his mom and dad were divorced. There were also many struggles growing up for the son of such a famous father. For the next 10 years, Marty traveled the country with his wife and son, Jamey. He still found time to go
back to his roots and play country venues. Marty’s love for his dad’s music inspired him to begin a project titled A Tribute to Merle Haggard “My Dad.” In 2010, he cut the first album in his tribute consisting of 15 Haggard classics. In 2010 he also began performing a tribute to his dad in Branson, Mo. until 2012. In 2011 he also recorded his second tribute album to his dad. Marty has spent the last eight years performing A Tribute to Merle Haggard “My Dad” all over the United States and Canada plus England, Ireland and Scotland.
Golden Age Olympics now underway But it’s not too late to register
The 38th annual Golden Age Olympics is underway but it’s not too late to sign up and compete. Twenty different events are scheduled to take place at 17 different venues – from Mission to Harlingen. The event, run by the City of McAllen Parks & Recreation, welcomes close to 1,500 competitors who can compete in a variety of events, from active to more recreational. There’s pickleball, swimming and softball on one end of the spectrum, and less physical competitions like jigsaw puzzles and sudoku on
the other end. Events are not just for individual awards, but Winter Texan parks can compete against one another. Parks are awarded points based on their residents placing in individual events, or team events where at least 75 percent of the team is made up of residents from the same park. Tip-O-Texas RV Resort in Pharr has dominated the competition in recent years in the Park versus Park competition. Phyll Thackery, who was named the Female See GOLDEN AGE pg. 27

Attention Winter Texans of the RGV!!! Hip Pain Workshop Reveals the three common causes of hip pain and how to heal naturally without pain medications, injections, or even surgery...
• Is your pain in hip keeping you from being able to play cards with your friends because it hurts to sit for long periods? • Is your pain in hip making you feel frustrated, annoyed, and insecure because it has caused you to lose balance when walking to the mailbox in the morning? • Is your pain in hip worse in the AM? • Is your pain in hip making you become disabled and dependent on a wheelchair and causing you to become depressed because you are missing out on valuable memories with loved ones? • Is your pain in hip making you take medications that you have never taken before, and the pain still does not get better? • Have you stopped going to pray at church, stopped volunteering at the salvation army, and given up on life due to your pain in hip? •Do you want to take control of your life again and be able to enjoy the memorable times with family and loved ones without risk of falling, or feeling insecure? • Do you want to learn how this can be achieved without injections, pain medications, or even surgery? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the HIP PAIN Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “The Pain in my hip and back is gone and I don’t have to worry about it interfering with my daily routine anymore.” Sabrina Doffing
Hip Pain can completely ruin your life. I’ve seen it many times.
• It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing) • It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… • It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… • It can ruin your travel plans… • And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress, and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems…and life problems. Here at Pure Physical Therapy, the Hip Pain Specialists have helped 1000’s of people from right here in McAllen, and the rest of Hidalgo County who have suffered needlessly with Hip Pain. It’s our SPECIALTY. By request, I’m hosting a Hip Pain Workshop here at Pure Physical Therapy in McAllen,
Saturday, January 27th, 2018 from 10am to 12noon
If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: • The Single Biggest #1 Mistake Hip Pain sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… • The 3 Most Common Causes of Hip Pain… • A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) • How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg… • What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections, or surgery.
Where do I register for the Hip Pain Workshop? www.pure-physicaltherapy.com/hippain
You Can Also Call our office to register at (956) 994-8880. When you register, we will mail you The Hip Pain Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. Woodcarving week continues with Rally on the Rio
FREE e-Edition Online
Woodcarving enthusiasts from Winter Texan resorts and around the Rio Grande Valley filled up the parking lot at the annual Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers Show Jan. 12 and 13 at the Nomad Shrine Club, located at 1044 W. Nolana in Pharr. But while the show may have ended, the woodcarving excitement didn’t. From Monday, Jan. 15 through Saturday, Jan. 20, the Rally on the Rio takes place at the Shrine Club. More than 20 instructors have (and will have through Saturday) classes for all levels of woodcarvers – even those who haven’t done any projects but are interested in trying it out. They start each morning at 8 a.m. and conclude each afternoon at 4:30 p.m. “People are welcome to just come in and look around and see what others are doing,” said Fred Stenman, president of the RGV Woodcarvers Club. “It’s not very formal and the instructors are here to help.” Last weekend, however, the two days belonged to woodcarvers who put a variety of objects out for display and purchase. The most popular carving was by far Santa Claus, but there were birds, animals, caricatures, canes and more. “We want people to come and see the woodcarving shows and to maybe gain an interest in it,” Stenman said. “We have everything here anyone needs and if they ever have a question, I don’t know of a
woodcarver who wouldn’t share their knowledge with someone else.” The Woodcarvers Club meets at 8 a.m. every Thursday from October through March and Stenman said the public is welcome to come and see what woodcarving is all about, as well as show how many different variations of the hobby there are. For questions or more information about the club, call Stenman at (320) 2532132 or club vice president at (956) 2796013.

wanting to make a few dollars on the way - will make the trek no matter what the obstacle – even if it means not being able to feel their fingers, the same fingers needed to perform on their guitar, violin, fiddle… whatever. Some, like Kevin Williamson from the Williamson Branch family band, will travel just to get their nine minutes to perform, then make a U-turn to head back home or to their next performance destination. Kevin drove 20 hours with the family in 2015, performed in front of the couple hundred activity and entertainment directors and set off for another 20hour trip home. second season, embarking on the second half with a show entitled “Sentimental Journey,” a country show with music from the 1940s all the way to the 2000s. The performer admits that she has butterflies on the day of each show but nothing like she had at her first Showcase appearance. “It was like giving birth the first time,” she said. “All the people are sitting there not to enjoy you – staring at you to critique you. I had never been to one before and had no idea what to expect.” Different parks and different activity directors no doubt have varying opinions on what good entertainment is. They all have their little checklists of how a performer does in his/her/their nine minutes. “One of the things I look for is nerves,” said Llano Grande Activity Director Hilda Lamas. “If you’re up there looking nervous, that’s not a good thing and if we see it, the audience sees it. But, if you’re nervous and don’t show it – and then you say that you were nervous up there – that’s points for you.” Some of the entertainers are old pros – even the young ones, like 15-year-old Kadence Williamson, who speaks like an artist who has been performing for a decade. Actually, she has. “The showcase is a gamble because you only have nine minutes,” said Kadence, who sings the harmonies that are too high for anyone else in Williamson Branch and is more than just proficient See SHOWCASE pg. 26

Ann’s Restaurant
I rarely ever order chicken fried anything from anywhere. I generally am not a fan. That being said, I’ve never had anything that was cooked up in Ann’s Restaurant, located on Highway 83 in San Juan, that was anything less than delicious. Those two statements were getting challenged. As my daughter Camilla and I walked into Ann’s we were greeted warmly – owner Nadia Baughman and staff are terrific. We grabbed a table along the wall where a large map covered with pushpins show where people have lived and

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

have visited – as expected, pins are dense in South Texas and the Midwest. Winter Texans love this place. Why wouldn’t they? The food is always cooked fresh and to order. You can even see owner Nadia Baughman tinkering in the kitchen, making sure everything is cooked as if she were at her own house. You want the taste of home? It’s here. Camilla and I each ordered a breakfast taco to start. This Valley breakfast staple was probably 1.5 times the size of a normal taco with nearly twice as much filling. Both the chorizo and egg for Camilla and the ham, egg and cheese for me were fresh, cooked perfectly and the homemade tortillas were probably the best we’ve eaten in a long time. There’s just something about home cooking. Afterwards, I ordered the chicken fried chicken. Battered in a thin wash, the outside had a great flavor with the panko crumbs prominent. The chicken breast was thin but spread over half the plate and was cooked carefully, getting it away from the heat before any chance of drying. Covered in white gravy with pepper, I was able to easily slice through the piece. In fact, I could use a fork. I think many places put way too much pepper on their gravy for this dish, and for the mashed potatoes. If I want more, I can put more – don’t overdo it. This one was peppered just right. The mashed potatoes were creamy and with the gravy it was a perfect combination with the chicken and buttery corn and toast. There’s plenty to order at Ann’s, including Mexican plates, burgers, salads.... and I’ve stayed away from chicken fried anything. I don’t think I’ll be a stranger to it anymore. It’s terrific – and it’s a lunch special on Fridays so what more could you ask. Ann’s Restaurant is located at 221 W. U.S. Highway 83 in San Juan. If you enjoy homestyle cookin’, you’ve got to try Ann’s Restaurant.

Sometimes activity directors scurry to line up their favorite acts before someone else books them. “They’ve had a lot of people wanting to talk with them,” said one of the volunteers in the scheduling building about Williamson Branch. “A lot of people like them.” Those in charge with signing and scheduling entertainment for the following year – and beyond – try to get the best dates for who they consider are the best performers. Those dates are usually in the second half of the year when there are more performers available, and more Winter Texans, as one director said “to put butts in the seats, because it comes
Robert Ferguson, president of the Rio Grande Valley Activity Directors Association, has run the two showcases per year for the past 11 years. What looks so organized and easily run has many underlying issues to work out. Where an entertainer is placed along the performance list is as big as any. In the Jan. 10 showcase, there were 32 performers listed. At nine minutes each, that’s 288 minutes of entertainment – or a little under five hours. That’s not counting set up and teardown time, which was run quite efficiently. Still, five hours of listening to group after group can be a difficult thing for anyone – especially those being tasked with signing up the park’s entertainment for the following year. Sometimes some of the activity directors may leave early because they’ve either felt they’ve seen enough or they just don’t want to wait any longer. Yet another challenge is the fact that if a director sees someone he or she feels fits what they are looking for, they may take off to the booking room to get the group booked, and miss other performers. “Some of these people are afraid that if they don’t sign them right away, they won’t get them,” Ferguson said. “I try to teach them personally to take notes; do not and go fill your entire schedule until you see those showcases. It’s unfair to See SHOWCASE pg. 32

WINTER TEXAN TIMES SANTA MARIA
From pg. 1 “His history is one of fame and glory, and his exceptional bravery and talent is extraordinary,” Renk said. He is the son of the matador Manolo Martinez who was on top during his 30-year career through the 70s, 80s and early 90s. “No one is better,” Renk added. “He has performed all over the world.” His father was a close friend to Don Fred Renk during these years and that is the main reason for his appearance in the Santa Maria Bullring. Alternating with Martinez will be the star of Monterrey, Mexico, Leal Montalvo who captured the best awards given for the last two years. Leal’s perfomances have wowed the crowd since 2015. “Everyone who has attended these events has witnessed his ability to dominate the largest of bulls. Most recently he accomplished a tremendous triumph in Monterrey’s plaza monumental bullring,” Renk said. Leal won the Golden Bull Award the last two years at the Santa Maria Bullting, topping all others who performed. Appearing mano a mano with Martinez is a challenging opportunity to try and top the best. The bulls for the entire season are huge, Renk stated. “They are as big as they (matadors) face in Mexico’s bullrings, using pica-

Of course registered for and $5 for each event thereGOLDEN AGE here they are faced full strength through the entire performance. It is with sheer nerve that you face these animals in this the only bullring in 49 of these United States,” Renk said. The bulls are from the ancient blood of Spain, They are the bulls of Colminar Viejo from the breeding ranch of our plaza judge Don Gerardo Martinez, first cousin to Matador Manolo Martinez. Over the years Don Fred Renk has presented bloodless bullfights in some of the largest arenas, including the Houston Astrodome, Hemisphere in San Antonio, and others. These bloodless bullfights are Ticket prices are still the same as years before: sun $30, shade $35 and covered ringside box seats $40. All tickets can be obtained by reservation only. Just call the bullring 1-956-4813300 and state the number of seats desired pay when you arrive. Checks or cash only, please. Bus tours to the bullfight are available this season through Journey Charters & Tours at 956-800-5356. So get a group together and do something you can’t do back home – go see a bloodless bullfight and witness the bravery of some of the world’s finest matadors as they face these enormous bulls and perform their artistic feats.
From pg. 8 Overall Olympian for the 2016 and 2017 Golden Age Olympics, has been a major reason for the park’s success. Tip-O-Texas won the park championship in 2017. The Golden Age Olympics has also added a GAO Hall Of Fame and are requesting nominees. Last year was the inaugural induction. The Hall of Fame honors and recognizes participants who promote the benefits of active, productive and purposeful living. Shirley Fellin was named the female inductee while Leon Penell was named the male inductee. Both are Tip-O-Texas RV Resort residents. Nomination forms at available at the Parks and Recreation Administration Office, located at 1000 Ware Road in McAllen. Perhaps the most popular of the events is one that many locals in the Rio Grande Valley – and quite possibly most of Texas – haven’t heard of or played, petanque. The sport, which is considered of French origin, is a mixture of horseshoes and bocce ball. According to petanqueamerica.com, bocce is more of a rolling game while petanque is more of a tossing game, like horseshoes. More than 100 three-person teams are expected to compete in the event, which begins Tuesday, Feb. 4 and will be held at Pleasant Valley Resort. Participants can register up until a week before the event they want to compete in. There is a $7 fee for the first event
after. Forms can be found at Lark Community Center, located at 2601 Lark Ave., McAllen; Las Palmas Community Center, located at 1921 N. 25th St. in McAllen or at Palm View Community Cener, located at 3401 Jordan Road in McAllen. Competitors can also register at www.mcallenparks.net.

From pg. 26 you and to the performers – you missed it if you filled the whole schedule. I feel the same way if they leave early.” Scheduling the entertainers is not an easy thing and being at the end isn’t always a great thing for an entertainer – but that wasn’t always the case. “Three years ago a guy called from Omaha who wanted to be in the showcase,” Ferguson said. “I only had a 3:30 time at the last showcase. He paid $850 to fly, stay in a hotel and go home.” The entertainer arrived with only his clothes and an accordion. He did his nine minutes and, according to Ferguson, he had a line in the booking room that went out the door and took at least 45 minutes after the show ended to get through. “He was playing two shows a day every single day the following year,” Ferguson said. The following year, however, he had hardly any bookings – because everyone had seen him. Another reason is because there are so many entertainers available – more keep coming each year and bringing different acts and skills – from a bluegrass folk band, to magicians, there is definitely something for everyone. And the key is for directors to know who their audience is.
“We’re looking for family acts,” said Gail Savvy of Big Valley RV Park in Donna. “We like Mario and the Punches Family and groups like that,” he said. “We’re booking for next year and even 2020.” During the interview, 8-year-old Carolina Williamson – the youngest of the Williamson Branch family group, walked up. “And of course, we signed this girl and her family,” Savvy said. “They are just amazing.”

NPBR bull riders to perform at Mercedes
The “Hottest 8 Seconds of the year” is back, and it’s bigger and better than ever. The National Professional Bull Riders bring some of the nation’s top bull riders to town for a two-day event on Jan. 27 and 28 in the Payne Auto Group Arena at the RGV Livestock Show Complex, Mercedes. Top cowboys will compete for an average of $14,000 in money and prizes. The NPBR is one of the premier bull riding tours in the country and has been entertaining crowds since established in 2000. The four-footed beasts that cowboys will be trying to score points on will be top bucking bulls that are the up and coming stars of professional bull riding. Many of the bulls that have performed in the Mercedes NPBR in the past have been featured bucking bulls on television. This is your chance to be up close and personal with the bulls and the bull riders. Returning this year…South Texas Bull Fight Challenge. This will be the first stop on the South Texas Bull Fight Challenge Tour. Five top bull fighters will be competing against each other not only for money but also for a chance to perform in the finals held in September. In a freestyle bull fight, the bull fighter goes one-onone against a Mexican fighting bull for 70

seconds. The bull fighter is judged on his willingness to expose himself to risk and on his aggressiveness. Pro Rodeo Clown and Barrelman, Joey “Hashbrown” Hackett from Hutto, Texas will be showing off his comedy routine from inside the clown barrel at each performance. Joey has established himself as one of the hottest barrelman and funny guy personalities in the world of Professional Rodeo. There will be something for everyone including music, food, vendors, pony rides and a calf scramble for the kids. Pre-sale tickets are available at Boots & Jeans in Weslaco, Bull Rider in Harlingen and all Boot Jack Western Stores. Adults are $14 pre-sale and $16 at the gate. Seniors (55+) are $12 presale and $14 at the gate. Kids (6-12 years) are $7 pre-sale and $8 at the gate and kids 5 and under are free. Chris Marshall starts the action on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 5:30 p.m. performing a variety of music and the bull riding and bull fights start at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday, Jan. 28 matinee show will start with a performance by “Ruthi” at noon followed by action packed bull riding and bullfights.

RC PLANES
From pg. 1 at the annual Fun Fly and Tailgate Swap Meet, Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 20-21, at the club’s flying field in San Juan. “There’s going to be warbirds from World War I and World War II, helicopters and drone racing, also called quad racing, which has exploded in popularity,” Yow said. “The swap meet is where people will show up with things to sell like knick knacks for your plane and all the things you need to keep your planes running.” Admission is free to the public and the air show starts at 9:30 a.m. each day following a 9 a.m. pilot’s meeting. There is $15 fee to fly a plane during the show. “We’re going to have concessions and be selling hamburgers and hot dogs so people can just come out, bring a lawn chair and watch some of these beautiful planes fly,” Yow said. At noon, all of the planes, helicopters and other aircraft are brought out onto the runway area and spectators can walk out and get a close-up view of the plane and talk to the pilots. Yow is bringing his Outlaw aircraft, with a 35-inch wingspan, that can reach speeds of 150 or 160 miles per hour. The largest planes will carry a wingspan of 112 inches, measure in at more than 12 feet long and weigh as much 30 pounds. “That plane can stand on its tail right in
front of me,” Yow said. Technology has changed a lot and drones, also known as quads, have become trendy among the younger generations, Yow said. “The quad stuff has taken off in the past five years where people are putting cameras on the aircraft and they can fly them like they are in them,” Yow said. “It takes a different skill to be flying one when you are looking at one as opposed to seeing things from inside the craft – there, up is up and down is down. But it’s exciting and people are latching on to it.” The weather forecast is calling for some heavier winds on Saturday, which means some of the smaller aircraft may be grounded. Sunday, however, looks to be very promising for all pilots, Yow said. While there is no specific ending time, Yow said people start leaving about 3 p.m. when they are tired and there are usually fewer than half the people left by 4 p.m. For more information call Yow at (956) 802-5976. Directions to the field: Take Expressway 83 to San Juan and exit on Stewart Road. Go south for 2.5 miles and you will see a steel gate on the east side of the road. This gate is the entrance to the airfield. If you go over the levee, then you have gone too far. GPS coordinates are: 26.153746, 98.152427
