art of bullfighting and hosts bloodless bullfights at the Santa Maria Bullring in La Gloria, Texas each winter season featuring premier matadors who are famous in Mexico for their bullfighting skills. “The season opener on Saturday, Jan. 27, will feature two of the best matadors from the Republic of Mexico, Manolo Martinez and Leal Montalvo, and it is with great pride that they are to appear at the Santa Maria Bullring,” Renk said. In the United States bullfights are much different than in other countries because the bulls are not killed or injured. In other countries, the bull is first weakened by a picador, who spears the bull to draw first blood. Bloodless bullfighting is much more dangerous for the matador, and several matadors have been tossed or injured at the Santa Maria Bullring, including Renk’s own son, David Renk. As Ernest Hemingway said, “Bullfighting is the only art in which the artist is in danger of death and in which the degree of brilliance in the performance is left to the fighter’s honour.”

Spittin’ Image

Spittin’ Image escapes Ohio for sun, fun of Texas

Don’t get Blain Swabb wrong – don’t misunderstand what he’s saying. Blain loves Ohio. It’s where he and his brother Brian were born and raised – and still live – in Greenville, Ohio near Dayton. Blain is quick to praise the virtues of spring, summer and fall in Southwest Ohio, where the seasons are completely different. Then there’s winter – and that’s why Blain and Brian, identical twin entertainers known as “Spittin’ Image” are in Florida right now and will soon be making their way to Valley for the second straight year with 20 performances in 30 days. “Believe me, however cold it gets in Florida and Texas, it’s still warmer than Ohio,” Blain said. “I can’t stand dealing with the snow and ice. Right now, I’m in a condo in Florida, looking out over a golf course and I see blue skies and palm trees. In Ohio I would be looking at gray skies and bare, spooky trees.” The duo has been performing for 46 years and Blain, the older of the two by 26 minutes, said he couldn’t imagine doing anything else. Last Winter Texan season was their first in the Valley. They had performed at a showcase the year before and picked up almost 20 bookings, similar to this year. Intertwining wonderful vocal ability and mixing it all with comedy, audience participation, and a high energy show, the duo will perform a variety of the Top 40, classic country, current country, and classic rock. They’ll also throw in Motown, Bluegrass, and Blues. Both are proficient on instruments, picking theirs at a young age. By the time they turned 13, the twins formed their first group. At 14 years old they were performing most weekends. After graduating from high school, the two traveled the Midwest, playing the hotel and resort circuit. After eight years on the road, they came back to their hometown to own, operate, and perform in their nightclub, “My Brother’s Place,” which they had for 15 years.

In 1998, the twins went back out on the road, and now average more than 500 shows per year. Their instruments include guitar, eightstring mandolin, five-string mandolin and harmonica. Like so many entertainers who hear about the Valley’s Winter Texan entertainment scene, it was another entertainer – a couple of them actually – who recommended the Valley to the Swabbs. “They told us just that we needed to check it out and there was a great music scene here. They were right.” Brian does most of the lead vocals and also adds the harmony to the sound. He is also the emcee for the group. Blain plays the eight-string mandolin but also jams on his custom made fivestring mandolin. When he’s not playing the mandolin he is playing his harmonicas or adding his vocal talents. He also has a love of doing pantomimes. “We play and sing but we also interact a lot with the audience,” Brian said. “We’re doing our passion and we both love what we do. We actually get paid to leave Ohio in the winter and come to Florida.” Spittin’ Image’s Upcoming Schedule Feb. 17, 7 p.m., Aladdin Villas, Mission Feb. 18, 7 p.m., Fun N Sun Resort, San Benito Feb. 20, 7 pm., Alamo Rose, Alamo Feb. 22, 7 p.m., Winter Ranch, Alamo Feb. 23, 7 p.m., Paradise South RV Park, Mercedes Feb. 24, 7 p.m., Oleander Acres, Mission Feb. 25, 7 p.m., Park Place, Harlingen Feb. 27, 7 p.m., Tropic Star, Pharr Feb. 28, 7 p.m. Countryside RV Park, Donna March 1, 7 p.m., Tip ‘O Texas RV Resort, Pharr March 2, 7 p.m. Tropic Winds, Harlingen March 3, 7 p.m. Palmdale Resort, Los Fresnos March 4, p.m., Alamo Palms, Alamo

Tavie’s Rock & Roll Show all about entertainment Be careful not to get caught laughing

at your friend when Tavie Spivey starts picking on him or her. If she catches you, you could be next in line. For the third straight year, Tavie’s “Rock & Roll Show makes its way to the Rio Grande Valley with a goal of bringing fun and helping people put their worries away, even if just for a couple hours. “We love coming to the Valley,” said the seasoned show biz performer from East Texas. “People are so friendly and nice and we just want everyone to get away from their problems and have a good time. I try to feed them that.” Entertaining since the age of 15, Tavie has entertained around the country and across Europe. She has also been heard on “oldies” radio shows across the nation and other English speaking countries for many years. She has performed with talent such as “The Coasters,” “The Country Comedy Tour,” “Jimmy Clanton” (Venus in Blue Jeans), many Elvis Tribute Artists and at theaters, festivals and convention centers across the country. She has also performed for the “Columbia Space Shuttle Project” and the “Texas Country Music Hall of Fame” among many others But she doesn’t just stand on a stage and sing – she interacts and brings her au-

Tavie’s “Rock & Roll” Show focuses on providing 50s and 60s entertainment from Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens. The show is also filled with interaction and comedy. But don’t tell Tavie that her show is all about singing because her motto makes that clear – It’s not about singing, it’s about entertainment. “I love doing stuff with the audience and picking on people,” she said. “People see their friends getting picked on and when they are laughing, of course I have to go pick on them. It’s all in fun and meant to help you forget about your troubles, laugh and enjoy life.”

Tavie’s Rock & Roll Show dience back to a simpler time – the 50s and 60s. Not only does she interact but audience members could find themselves on stage as well. “I like to get the audience going as much as I can – I want people to know that they will have a good time,” Tavie said. “I do a lot of interaction and will go out and sing to them and have everyone singing – and I’ll get them on stage and get them singing there too.”

Someone could go watch Ralph Kuster perform for a week straight – that’s seven days – without hearing the same song twice. Actually, make that nine days in a row – and that’s what’s unique about the performer who has shows ranging from Country Classics to St. Patrick’s Day to a salute to Broadway and the Movies. The Canadian who has travelled to the Valley for the Winter Texan season for the past seven years has nine completely different shows and performs here from December through mid-March. a Christmas Show, a Timeless Treasures Variety Show, a Tribute to Elvis, Neil and Friends and a Country and Rock Show. He recently completed an outline for a Gospel Show with video which he hopes to perform, if not this year, then in 2019. All of his shows are 2 hours including a 15-minute intermission. Kuster has put hours of time into each video presentation, which complements or simply tells the story as he performs each song. He enjoys interacting with his audiences and hopes that the videos re-kindle special memories for his audiences. It’s that connection that makes his show just a little more personal. During his years performing in Branson, Kuster learned early on the importance of diversification. This inspired him to learn more than 600 songs, to date, which provides his audiences with a broad range of musical tastes. For more information, call Kuster at (417) 230-8198 or by e-mail ralphkuster@ sympatico.ca. He will be performing in the Rio Grande Valley until March 18.

From pg. 4 Some of his upcoming shows validate the extreme variety. He will perform his Country Classics Show at Texas Trails on Jan. 30 with a video for each song followed by ‘A Tribute to Frank Sinatra and Friends’ at Southern Comfort with a Valentine’s Day theme on Feb. 14 featuring a dinner and show. He also has an upcoming show at Paradise Resort Estates on Feb. 28 where he will entertain the audience with a blend of classics from Broadway Shows like ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Les Miserables’, ‘Oklahoma’, ‘Mama Mia’ and many others. Throughout the show, he will also perform classic hits like, ‘I Cross My Heart’ from the movie Pure Country and ‘Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head’ from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and many other favorites. That is just three of his options that he can be booked for. He also has a St. Patrick’s Irish Show, a Valentine’s Show,

Attention Winter Texans of the RGV!!! Hip Pain Workshop Reveals the three common causes of hip pain and how to heal naturally without pain medications, injections, or even surgery...

• Is your pain in hip keeping you from being able to play cards with your friends because it hurts to sit for long periods? • Is your pain in hip making you feel frustrated, annoyed, and insecure because it has caused you to lose balance when walking to the mailbox in the morning? • Is your pain in hip worse in the AM? • Is your pain in hip making you become disabled and dependent on a wheelchair and causing you to become depressed because you are missing out on valuable memories with loved ones? • Is your pain in hip making you take medications that you have never taken before, and the pain still does not get better? • Have you stopped going to pray at church, stopped volunteering at the salvation army, and given up on life due to your pain in hip? •Do you want to take control of your life again and be able to enjoy the memorable times with family and loved ones without risk of falling, or feeling insecure? • Do you want to learn how this can be achieved without injections, pain medications, or even surgery? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the HIP PAIN Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “The Pain in my hip and back is gone and I don’t have to worry about it interfering with my daily routine anymore.” Sabrina Doffing

Hip Pain can completely ruin your life. I’ve seen it many times.

• It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing) • It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… • It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… • It can ruin your travel plans… • And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress, and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems…and life problems. Here at Pure Physical Therapy, the Hip Pain Specialists have helped 1000’s of people from right here in McAllen, and the rest of Hidalgo County who have suffered needlessly with Hip Pain. It’s our SPECIALTY. By request, I’m hosting a Hip Pain Workshop here at Pure Physical Therapy in McAllen,

Saturday, January 27th, 2018 from 10am to 12noon

If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: • The Single Biggest #1 Mistake Hip Pain sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… • The 3 Most Common Causes of Hip Pain… • A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) • How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg… • What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections, or surgery.

Where do I register for the Hip Pain Workshop? www.pure-physicaltherapy.com/hippain

You Can Also Call our office to register at (956) 994-8880. When you register, we will mail you The Hip Pain Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. Johnny Bird from “Voice of the Legends”

Performers came from all over to compete for bookings during the second Showcase of Winter Texan season. The event, held at Casa Del Valle RV Resort in Alamo on Thursday, Jan. 18, was the second one held this season to give musicians, comedians and variety acts an opportunity to “show of their stuff” to Winter Texan park activity directors with the hopes of signing bookings this season and next. Some were even booking into 2020. The second show was comprised of 32 entertainers, all given nine minutes to wow the “judges.” Some of those entertainers are from the Valley, but mostly they came from places like Las Vegas and Branson, Mo. with titles that included Nashville Recording Artist, Entertainer of the Year or other such accolades. Some have performed thousands of shows. Eighteen of them were first timers to the Showcase, not to be confused with firsttime performers by any means. Here is a glimpse at three of those artists and the story of their first Showcase. Kainoa Kamaka Kamaka was the 31st of the 32 performers during the day. In other words, he performed from minute 270 to 278 out of the 287 total performing minutes allowed. In fact, several people had already left for the day – that was their mistake. Kamaka knocked his performance out of the park. The first timer who was born and raised on the main island of Hawaii and now works for the University of Texas-San Antonio (for a few more days until he begins an early retirement) energized and rewarded those who stayed, about 80 percent of them, with his song, dance and his ukelele. While he was a first-timer to the showcase, he was in no sense a rookie entertainer. Kamaka – whose full name

is Kimokeo Keo Kainoa Kamakamanoanoaluahine (“But people can call me Kai,” he says to the relief of the crowd.”) frequently entertained while living in Hawaii and was part of a group named Positive Connection that traveled to schools with an important message. “We went to schools to teach kids about self-esteem, which is so important for them,” he said. “The group was me, a motivational speaker and a magician/ juggler/comedian and I took the ukelele in the schools and had to come up with an act that would really grab them. They would see a ukelele and think I was gonna perform a luau or something so I needed something else.” His performance of “Johnny B. Good,” was lightning let out of a bottle. He introduced it by telling the audience how he had been influenced by artists such as Michael Jackson, Elvis, Jimi Hendrix and, of course by Chuck Berry, who first wrote and performed the hit in 1958. Not only did Kamaka explode with energy on stage, he also included some Michael Jackson moves, some Elvis Presley shaking, and the famous duckwalk that Berry made extremely popular on stage while playing the guitar. Then, to top the performance off, Kamaka dropped with a split on stage, put the ukelele behind his head a la Hendrix and jammed to the song’s guitar solo. The audience yelled, laughed and applauded in enjoyment. His connection to those in attendance were validated, booking 14 shows for next year. More importantly, he definitely left a good impression for those who will be still looking to fill in some entertainment spots. “He nailed it,” said one performer. “There was a line waiting out the door for him.”

If you are looking for a unique restaurant with great food, drinks, and a beautiful view; head to Baffin Bay Seafood Co. A short drive east on FM 771 off of Highway 77 will take you through the South Texas Brush Country to a great view of Baffin Bay. The restaurant is a bit off the beaten path, but well worth the short 10 minute detour off of Highway 77. You might even see some local wildlife on the way. The attire and atmosphere is definably laid back. While many go specifically for the drum fish ribs, there are plenty of other choices on the menu. The “fish ribs” are exactly what they sound like, the ribs of drum battered and fried to perfection. Eating the ribs is quite an experience and the extra work is well worth it. A few other menu items include gulf shrimp, locally caught fresh black drum, giant burgers, great steaks and many

other choices. All items are cooked to order and prepa by hand. When the weather is nice (almost always), can sit outside and enjoy a beer or mixed drink w overlooking Baffin Bay. Each table is greeted with a b ket of crackers to top with their famous seafood sau The sauce is an upgraded tarter or remoulade sauce is amazing. Craig Alexander purchased the property from the o inal proprietors, the Kraatz family, in early 2015. A a complete kitchen remodel and dining area facelift, restaurant opened back up in November 2015. Mr. Al ander has 30 years of restaurant experience and dema consistent, quality food and excellent customer serv Many of the patrons are regulars, so do not be surpri if it seems like more of a family diner than just ano restaurant. The goal is to make everyone feel welco

Gayle from “Dale & Gayle”

SHOWCASE NO.2

From pg. 8 Kamaka said he had no idea what to expect. His girlfriend, who is from Edinburg, had been telling him about the showcase for years. After researching it, he decided to make the journey. After not playing music as much as he would like for the past 10 years, his early retirement looks like it’s on a good path. “Performance wise I just wanted to give people a glimpse of who I am,” said Kamaka, who lives in San Antonio. “I love to entertain and have the chance to showcase the ukelele differently. I was blessed. I get to play music again.” Johnny Bird/Voice of the Legends Johnny Bird owns an entertainment company – Birdland Productions – and soon that company will have its new offices and production studio in Las Vegas. Bird, like many of the performers, is no stranger to putting on a show and estimates he’s done more than 5,000 shows in his career. “I know the stage pretty well,” he said. But he almost never made it to the Valley. While performing a bar show three years ago in his hometown, just south of Minneapolis, a Winter Texan approached him and told him about the Valley. “He told me I should check it out and gave me an entertainer’s phone number,” Bird said. “So I researched a little bit and called this person.” The person on the other end of that call, however, was no help to Bird, who recalled being told things like “don’t come down here and waste your time,” and other things. “Then he hung up on me,” Bird said, laughing.

Kainoa Kamaka (in the background) If anything, however, that piqued his attention and two years later he tried again, this time reaching Robert Ferguson, the creator and organizer of the showcase. Entertainers are only allowed to perform at one of the two showcases. However, Bird has a few completely different shows – one is “The Fabulous Vegas Boys” and another is “Voices of the Legends.” Less than a week before he embarked on a nearly 1,500-mile journey, his partner for the first show called – his interest had wained and he told Johnny he wasn’t going to perform. “I had to go, no matter what, but had to come up now with something for the showcase since we were going to do dueling pianos,” Bird said. “I couldn’t do that by myself.” His partner in one of the other acts he performs, and a former winner of Ed McMahon’s Next Big Star, Don Tersigni, drove all night from Indiana to Minnesota to help Bird come up with something. “We worked on a script and then I filmed him in front of a green screen,” Bird said. “Then I worked from 10 at night to 6 a.m. to finish it off.” Bird started his trip to the Valley and bought “the biggest television I could with the money I had in a pawn shop in Waco.” So I worked the script and when we turned the TV on, it looked like he was live – I don’t think the people could get over it since it was so different. It was impressive enough to garner Bird 17 shows in the booking room. “I had to tell him that he got more applause than I did,” Bird said. “We definitely weren’t up there doing what everyone else was doing.”

Shelly from Shelly and Darren interacts with the audience. Curt Reister/Curt James Curt Reister is a local performer whose experience is small compared to the previous entertainers. He was like the kid in a candy store, however, at his first showcase. “I’m chasing my dream at 50,” Reister said. “It was really cool and I was excited to perform and to be around all those great performers.” Reister picked up four bookings at the show and has received some calls with more opportunities attached. He said he’s all ready for next season’s show. “Maybe I’ll talk a little more or tell a joke, or try to get more songs in my nine minutes,” he said. “I realized then when you only have nine minutes, there’s so much more to it than just having a good voice. It’s all about whether you can give them a good

Wade Landry from “Swingin’ Cajun Style” show and keep them entertained.” Reister lives in Alamo Country Club, a 55-and-older community. He has performed there as well as seen many of the performers there. He said he is especially looking forward to seeing Southern Anthem perform, a family band that hits it big every year they’ve been to the Valley. “They are entertaining and I’m excited to see them,” he said. “I may never achieve Southern Anthem’s success but this truly has been a dream of mine to get up there and have a blast making people smile. Maybe I’m still naïve about the possibility of the future, but I can do this for a long time and there are so many parks out there.”

Lemon Tree Estates Omelet Breakfast Party The chicken dance, the Rooster song and a bunch of clucking – usually in response to someone yelling out “let’s hear it for the roosters,” were just a part of the monthly Lemon Tree Estates Omelet Breakfast. Three-hundred and forty tickets had been sold by the time the first breakfast of the New Year was served to its first customer in the newly renovated kitchen, complete with flat top grills. The breakfasts take place three times per season. The remaining two this year are Feb. 7 and March 14. Money raised from prior omelet events were used to renovate the kitchen, extend it, modernize the laundry and make the bathrooms handicap accessible. Lemon Tree Estates is located at 1510 U.S. U.S. Business 83 in Mission. The grills previously had been used for a pancake breakfast. When the pancake event ceased, the grills were left unused. The idea was the brainchild of two new resident owners in 2010 and started with a simple conversation between Estella Boldt and Chris Maher. The idea came quickly to fruition and, now into its eighth season, has turned into a social event with entertainment (Rip Van Winkle is the host – his real name is Vern but it became Rip when he entered the military

and it has stuck with him), plenty of good humor – and the ageless chicken dance. “I had done this before at a hospital while working in Iowa,” Boldt said regarding the grill and fundraiser. “I mentioned it to the residents but it didn’t really move, but then when I talked to Chris about it she was like ‘let’s do it’ and she just got going.” Maher, whose job along with Boldt is to man the flat top grills and cook, cook, cook, said that there are approximately 450 hours donated by 75 volunteers for each event. Tickets are $6.50 per person and each person brings their own table settings. Based on roughly 320 omelets per event, the park will surpass 7,500 omelets cooked and served since the fundraising feast began – probably 95 percent of them cooked by Maher and Boldt. The shocking news behind all those omelets: “I’ve never cooked an omelet at home,” Boldt said. “I would make them at the hospital in Iowa too, but I’ve never made one at home.” Boldt is also training Annette Hyman to take over her role as one of the two “Master Chefs” as she plans to step down next year, but will be available to volunteer and help in other areas – but she still

WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com

Chris Maher (foreground) and Estella Boldt are the omelet cooks, with close to 7,500 of them made on the grills. probably won’t cook an omelet at home. The volunteers could probably turn what they’ve learned into a seminar on how to serve your customers efficiently, effectively and with a smile on your face (while bringing many to their customers’ faces as well.) “We’ve been doing it since 2010 so we keep taking suggestions and ideas

WINTERFEST

From pg. 1 put your name and address on it.” Several other voices came across too – like Barney Fife and Gomer Pyle from the Andy Griffith Show; Bill Clinton even piped in a word or two about Hillary. Those voices came from 71-year-old entertainer Gary Crain, who will once again be the emcee for the popular Winter Texan celebration known as WinterFest. The annual Winter Texan music festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31 at Schlitterbahn Water Park on South Padre Island. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the gate and can be purchased by calling (956) 772-7873. Headlining the event will be Mirage – Visions of Fleetwood Mac. Based in Los Angeles, the members of the group capture the look and sound of Fleetwood Mac live in concert. Mirage focuses completely on Fleetwood Mac and their greatest hits in the five-piece concert recreation. “They are going to be fantastic,” Crain said “There’s just going to be a large amount of great music and entertainment.” Crain will be part of that entertainment as emcee as well, performing jokes and other comedy routines in between shows. Crain said the first time he did an impersonation was in 1964 and it was of Gomer Pyle, aka Jim Neighbors. “I never got to meet Jim and that’s one of my regrets,” Crain said. “But as far as the show goes, he’ll be there along with

over the years on ways to make it better,” Boldt said. “Me and Chris are doing the cooking so we don’t hear anything during the event.” When someone walks in, they are given a Styrofoam cup with a number on it. When that number is called (which was almost immediately), the customer goes to a set of tables where there are several options for the inside of the omelet – onions, greens, mushrooms, jalapenos, sausage, ham and other. A volunteer will scoop the items into the cup and when the end of the line is reached, it’s off to get the omelet cooked. Once the omelet is done, there’s another table with salsa, fruit, juice and buttered toast just waiting to be scooped up. Volunteers walking around the recreation hall-turned restaurant are at an arm’s reach if someone needs coffee or water, but don’t dare ask for a chicken – they are highly protective of the creator of eggs. “People from the park will find a chicken or rooster,” and will get it because they think we should have it,” Boldt said. The official roosters are the men who work in the kitchen, cracking the eggs into bowls – two eggs per bowl for each omelet. “We’ve got the system down,” Boldt said. “The people in the park are the ones who turned it into a party.”

my other voices including Gomer P. Presley, the cousin of Elvis. I do the talking voice of Gomer and the singing voice of Elvis. I gotta wear a wig for it since I don’t have any hair.” Others in the musical lineup include Goldwing Express, Lobo del Mar, Tavie’s “Rock & Roll” Show, Port Isabel High School’s Mariachis Plata, Mario Rosales, Southern Anthem and more. “There’s a lot of great acts at this festival,” said Crain, adding that he’s personal friends with some of them including Rosales. “Mario has been in Vegas and Branson and he’s just a really great talent,” Crain said. “He’s a crooner, has a style like Sinatra. He also has the best Rodney Dangerfield impersonation. He’s extremely talented. People will enjoy him and the rest of them.” A meal also comes with the cost of admission. The meal, provided by Shrimp Haus Restaurant, is a choice of either a fish or shrimp basket with coleslaw and hushpuppies. Crain and his wife Patsy come to the Valley to entertain Winter Texans. Their show “Gomer Hears Voices” includes the voices of Gomer, Barney, Haney and Clinton along with Floyd the Barber, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Walter Brennan among others. “We started doing that when I retired at age 62 and now I’m 71,” said Crain, whose wife Patsy sings several Patsy Cline songs. “But now we come down and just emcee, and we have a wonderful time.”

2017 TCF Parade photo of Mission Bell/Trade Winds Float 2nd Place Valley Products

CITRUS FLOAT

From on their float, which will be competing for top awards in this year’s parade. Marilyn Causey of Illinois, who is a nine-year veteran of Texas Citrus Fiesta parade floats and Nancy Erickson of Minnesota, an eight-year veteran, told the Winter Texan Times they have a crew of seven women, whom they referred to as “the think tank” when it comes to designing and building the floats. Other members include Patty Halkala, of Michigan;

pg. 1 Carol Iwanka, of Canada; Edna Carlson, of Wisconsin; Gert Van Tine, of Illinois; and LeNeice Sharpling of Iowa. When it is time to start designing the float these ladies put their heads together to come up with a creative way to bring the float to life using the current theme for the Parade of Oranges. Then there are a bunch of volunteers like Arlie Stolle, who come to help. “Arlie can build anything we want,” said

WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com

Marilyn. “He works on the foundation and infrastructure of the float and if we want something like a mermaid to hang on the side of the float, Arlie can cut one out for us.” The Texas Citrus Fiesta theme for this year is “Hawaiian Pirate Adventure” so this year’s float will have their five-foot pirate standing on the deck of his ship. There will be other special features on the ship but the ladies did not want to give away too much of what they planned. The park has had a contest to name the ship and the name selected will not be revealed until Saturday when the parade takes place! Without revealing their entire plan, the ladies brought out their pirate made of paper mache to pose for a picture. They will be using dried oranges, cotton, oregano (yes, it is grown in the Rio Grande Valley!), dried carrots, bougainvillea and a host of other products to cover the pirate and the rest of the float. The ladies first learned use of the product when they attended a seminar where staff at the TCF office was teaching volunteers to make costumes for the Product Costume Show several years ago. But these ladies decided to apply what they learned to float building instead. So they gather material through the time they are here and process them much the same way the materials for the Product Costume Show are prepared. “This is really a park or parks project,’ said Marilyn referring to the fact Mission Bell and Tradewinds are sister parks and do projects jointly. Each year a spaghetti supper is held to fund the materials needed for the floats. In past years, they have also raised enough money to build a shed to store materials and a cover for their float, located on the northwest corner of Mission Bell. Many of these residents

will help with last minute construction of the float as well when the product has to be applied. The ladies are proud of their float. Last year they won second place with the float they entered. Of course, they are hoping for a first place this year. But regardless, they enjoy the challenge of building the float and the camaraderie that goes on with fellow park residents over the construction of the float. And that may be the most important part of the entire project! Thank you Mission Bell/Trade Winds residents – and all the other Winter Texans who participate in the Texas Citrus Fiesta events. This year’s Parade of Oranges will be held Saturday, Jan. 27. While the parade officially begins at 3 p.m., spectators begin lining up along the parade route in the morning, securing their favorite viewing locations. The parade will proceed from north to south along Conway Avenue beginning at FM 495 and ending at 1st Street in downtown Mission. Concessions and sale of the famous Texas Citrus Fiesta barbecue sandwiches will begin at 12 p.m. along the parade route. Watch for the barbeque trailers being pulled down Conway Ave. and enjoy one of the Fiesta’s traditions – Fiesta BBQ! I look forward to it every year. Texas Citrus Fiesta Fun Fair Before or after the parade, be sure to check out the Fiesta Fun Fair, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with live entertainment, food and arts and crafts. Admission is free. Due to the reconstruction of Leo Pena “La Placita” Park, the Texas Citrus Fiesta Fun Fair will be held in a new location this year – at the Mission Market Square, next to the Mission Chamber of Commerce at 202 West Tom Landry.

VOTE

From pg. 1 ter Texan Times. When you fill out a ballot we ask you to vote for someone in every category, if you are familiar with the nominees. In the past, some ballots have come in with only one category marked. Also, be sure to write in your choice for Entertainer or Group of the Year. (Sometimes people forget to write in their favorite.) This can be any of the individuals or groups on the ballot, from any category. This award is open to groups as well as individual entertainers. “The Valley Star Awards are designed to honor the top entertainers and groups who are performing in the Rio Grande Valley this year,” said Robert Ferguson. Entertainers who are not coming to the Valley this year are not eligible. The Fergusons compiled a comprehensive list of this year’s entertainers and the park activity directors voted to determine the top four nominees in each category. Only the top four nominees appear on the ballot. To vote for your favorite Valley enter-

tainers, fill out the ballot in today’s paper and mail it to 1217 N. Conway, Mission TX 78572, or, vote online at www.wintertexantimes.com. Only one vote per person is allowed. This year, no photocopies of the ballot are permitted. Voters must either vote online (preferred method) or fill out the ballot printed in the Winter Texan Times newspaper. Ballots must be received by Feb. 13, 2018 to be counted. The Valley Star Awards Show will be held, Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. at Casa Del Valle in Alamo. This is a new location and new time. The award show has a great lineup of entertainment including 4 His Glory, Kelli Marie, Dave & Daphne, Lindley Creek, Jason Whorlow and Vance Greek. Tickets to the Valley Star Awards Show are $15 and are available at Casa Del Valle, 1048 N. Alamo Rd., Alamo; Winter Texan Times office at 1217 N. Conway Ave., Mission; or order by phone by calling (865) 253-2514.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES SANTA MARIA

From “These bulls are of pure Spanish blood. They can out run a quarter horse the first hundred yards and turn on a dime. He is an animal of enormous strength and is something to behold when being worked by a matador that can dominate his strength,” Renk said. “While the bloodless bullfight is harmless for the bull in our way of presenting it, it is quite dangerous for the matador. These bulls are bred for their size, strength and bravery and they fear

pg. 1 nothing they encounter. When in a herd, they are docile, but when alone, they become aggressive. They will charge anything that moves; they learn fast and can be fought only one time with a cape. After they have appeared at Santa Maria, they are sold to the rodeo world and chase clowns for the rest of their life.” Renk describes bullfighting as “more of an art than a sport.” “The matadors perform a dance – a choreography – as

they skillfully maneuver these huge, dangerous fighting bulls with nothing more than a cape.” Renk invites Winter Texans to come out to this weekend’s bullfight at Santa Maria on Saturday, Jan. 27. The gates open at 1 p.m. and there is food and beverage and music and entertainment until the bullfight starts at 4 p.m. Tickets are still just $30 sunny side, $35 shady side, and $40 for the ringside covered seats. Rat Pack to appear at Travel, Health & Wellness Expo

The experts say good music, fun and laughter is good for your health. Great entertainment just one of many good reasons to attend this year’s McAllen Travel Health & Wellness Expo on Feb. 13-14 at the McAllen Convention Center. Headliners for this year’s entertainment will be “The Rat Pack,” featuring Las Vegas style tribute performers as Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Marilyn Monroe. The Dean-O-Holics recreate the music and fun of Dino, Frank and Sammy – The Rat Pack. The atmosphere? Pure Las Vegas circa 1960. The Act? Strictly Rat Pack; Frank, Dino and the gang bring back memories of yesteryear. It’s live. It’s 18-karat fun. The show starts with Dino, the emcee of the evening, ad-libbing and warming up the crowd with the rest of the pack following suit shortly after. The group works their way through all the years of the Rat Pack, not just the 1961 Sands era, which most of the Rat Pack Tributes shows usually cover. The show is more of a tribute to the style of music and that golden era than to the artists themselves, although the voices are remarkably close to the originals. The best is that fun is contagious. One is never sure who is having more fun, the audience or the performers. The Agency While this year’s Expo organizers were searching far and wide to bring you

top entertainment, they didn’t have to travel far to sign one of the Rio Grande Valley’s best local bands – The Agency – to entertain folks who attend this year’s Travel, Health & Wellness Expo. Known as “the best classic rock band in South Texas,” The Agency is celebrating 25 years of performances. The Agency is a Rio Grande Valley-based five-piece veteran band that has been entertaining people throughout Texas since 1993. The band specializes in authentic versions of rock, soul and Motown classic hits from the 50s, 60s and 70s. They also play a variety of dinner jazz, swing, country, waltzes and more. Composed of seasoned musicians who grew up with classic rock, The Agency is well known for finely crafted vocals, tight, blended sound and danceable arrangements. So, put your dancing shoes on and come on down to the Travel, Health & Wellness Expo for a great time – and it’s all free. Free admission, free entertainment, free door prizes, free health screenings and lots of exhibitors offering you special Expo deals. The McAllen Travel Health & Wellness Expo will be held Feb. 13 and 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the McAllen Convention Center. Come early for the free health screenings and stay for the massages, health care solutions, nutritional and travel information available from over 80 exhibitors participating.

Palm Shadows Navy moms ship care packages

Every month Navy moms across the nation adopt a unit that has requested a morale boost for a program called “Molly’s Adopt a Sailor.” Since 2016, Palm Shadows RV Park in Donna has created care packages, organized by Ruth Clayton-Davis, a Navy mom who has been organizing packing parties in Davenport, Iowa, since 2011. Many Palm Shadows residents are veterans, veterans’ wives and parents, or have active duty military in their families. This year, Navy mom Ria Richards from Alamo and volunteer Linda Garza from Mercedes also helped. The adoption in January is for a weapons department on the USS Roosevelt. A “packing party” was held Jan. 21 at Palm Shadows that resulted in 18 boxes from this area being shipped. More boxes are being sent from other locations around

the Unites States. “We ship love! Sending a little bit of home in every package,” is the motto of Molly’s Adopt a Sailor, a nonprofit 501c3 organization that sends letters, cards, and care packages adopting our service members of all branches. Postage will be paid by the organization for the large priority boxes. Volunteers from Palm Shadows, Alamo, and Mercedes helped pack the donated and requested items including snacks, candy, toiletries, Valentines, and pillowcases. Girl Scouts from Troop 137 sold cookies during the party that were donated to the packages. Each sailor will receive a new pillowcase to fill with items from the boxes. For more information about the program, visit mollysadoptasailor.com.
