Texas State Aquarium is a whole new experience
Anyone who has not been to the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi since the May 13 opening of the new $65 million renovation including construction of the Caribbean Journey, which doubled the
aquarium’s capacity, really has not seen the aquarium. I kept a promise to my great grandchildren to take them to the aquarium during the holidays. As an educator, I took stu-

La Gloria, Texas – The Santa Maria Bullring presents a special bloodless bullfight event in which the famous La Gravere brothers perform together with big bulls of El Colminar Viejo. The two brothers, Michelito La Gravere and Andre La Gravere, will face off in a duel of matadors at the Santa Maria Bull Ring in La Gloria, Texas on Saturday, Feb. 10. “This is the La Gravere brothers debut – their first bullfight in the United States,” said Fred Renk, owner of the Santa Maria See SANTA MARIA pg. 34
Winter Texan Fiesta at a new location this year
Two of the three events comprising the Mega Winter Texan Fiesta in Mission will be held at a new location this year. The annual Mega Winter Texan Fiesta, sponsored by the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce and city of Mission, will be held Feb. 9-10. The two-day event celebrating Winter Texans who winter in Mission and the Rio Grande Valley includes a “Fiesta on the Golf Course” golf tournament at Shary Golf course, Mexican Artesano Market Days on Friday and Saturday and the Winter Texan Fiesta celebration concert on Saturday, Feb. 10. dents each year but it changed so much that I didn’t recognize the place. I would put it on par with – or maybe even better than – the larger aquariums I have seen in major cities across the county. The aquarium is accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums and is a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The Texas State Aquarium specializes in the fish and marine life of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. There are more than 4,000 species of tropical fish and marine life on display in several large tanks. There are jellyfish displays and other hard-to-see marine animals. Dolphins make daily appearances and there is a wild bird flight show new to the aquarium. The otters perform and there is a turtle show. Visitors can also enjoy feeding the rays in the tanks. The new Caribbean Journey addition is the biggest change. Years in the making, the Caribbean Journey exhibit takes the best of the Caribbean and brings it to the coastal bend region. Winter Texans enjoy the Citrus Fiesta Parade of Oranges
A lot of Winter Texans love to go see a parade, including last Saturday’s Texas Citrus Fiesta Parade of Oranges in Mission. It looked as though half if not more of the spectators lining the route along Conway Avenue were visitors from up north. One group of Winter Texans roaming the streets who paused at the Fun Fair area to have something to eat were from the Fun N Sun Resort in San Benito and Orange Grove RV Park in Edinburg. Tim and Marilyn Brunel, from Green Bay, WI, had come to the parade for the first time. However, Marilyn said her parents had come to the Valley years ago and had been to see the event. The Brunels, who have come to the Valley and been at Fun N Sun since 2012, keep active. Tim likes fishing and goes See PARADE OF ORANGES pg. 41

We want to remind our readers to be sure and complete the Winter Texan Survey being conducted by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). The bi-annual survey studies the economic impact of Winter Texans in the Rio Grande Valley. The easiest way to complete the survey is online at http://utrgv.edu/wintertexan and there is a link to the survey on the home page of our website at www.wintertexantimes.com. It only takes a couple of minutes to complete the survey, and you could be one of the winners of our drawing -- just for participating in the anonymous survey. Prizes this year include a Kindle Fire and a $150 cash prize. The Winter Texan Times helps sponsor the survey, as we know how important Winter Texans are to local businesses and the RGV economy, spending $760 million each year, according to the last survey. If you prefer filling out a paper copy of the survey form, copies are available at the Winter Texan Times office as well as at chamber of commerce offices in Mission, McAllen, Edinburg, Alamo, Pharr (EDC office), Weslaco, Mercedes, Harlingen, San Benito, Brownsville, Port Isabel
and South Padre Island. Copies will also be available at the Texas Travel Information Center in Harlingen and at the restaurant at Don-Wes Flea Market. This survey of Winter Texans is conducted every two years by Dr. Penny Simpson with the UTRGV Tourism Research Center, with assistance from the Winter Texan Times in distributing the survey. “All information provided will be kept confidential. The data will be tabulated and only statistical information will be made public,” said Dr. Penny Simpson, associate dean of the College of Business Administration at UTRGV. To enter the prize drawing, fill out the survey form completely and mail it to the Tourism Research Center at the address printed on the form no later than Feb. 26. Survey forms may also be dropped off at the Winter Texan Times office, located at 1217 N. Conway, Mission. Popular performing duo on Valley farewell tour The Gordy & Debbie Show has fond memories in the Rio Grande Valley – and they are down to their final few shows before they say goodbye after 10 years of making those South Texas memories. The country duo that is especially known for their show “A Tribute to George Strait” has eight shows remaining in South Texas. Gordy Wensel and Debbie Kaye are from Branson, Mo. And have spent the last 25 years in the entertainment industry. They first met in 2005 and by 2006 their love for music and each other grew into a husband and wife singing duo. Gordon Wayne Wensel Jr. was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where he also was raised. His love for music began at an early age. He started out singing in church when he was 13 years old and has been singing ever since. He sang lead in the gospel quartet “3rd Generation” for 7 years, during which time they had their music released to national southern gospel radio. Although gospel music has been a large part of his life, he still enjoys all types of music. Gordy is a big fan of country music legend, George Strait, which explains why he performs so many of George’s songs.
Gordy moved to Branson in 2005 and began performing at Mel’s Hard Luck Diner as a singing server. 2005 was a big year for Gordy, as it was also the year he met Debbie Kaye. They were married in the main dining room of Mel’s Hard Luck Diner on Dec. 10, 2006. Gordy and Debbie continue to pursue their music career and enjoy traveling and performing on the road in the off season. They are six-time Valley Star Award winners, winning Favorite Musical Duo for the past six years in a row. Debbie Kaye grew up in Kimball, S.D. where she discovered her love of music.
Along with her older sister and brother, she worked her high school years waiting tables in their family-owned truck stop, where all the stars stopped on their way across South Dakota. She studied music education in college at South Dakota State but decided she would rather sing than teach. She moved to Clear Lake, Iowa and formed her own band, The Debbie Kaye Band. She had the privilege of opening for Bobby Vee, “Take Good Care Of My Baby” at Pufferbilly Days in Boone, Iowa before a crowd of thousands. Another highlight was headlining several times at the legendary
Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. The site of Buddy Holly’s last concert. She moved to Branson in 1994. Some of her successes include performing in The Showboat Branson Belle Show and in The Pump Boys And Dinettes Show. Several of her songs are heard locally on Branson radio and nationally on XM Radio. She has also been featured in a book about Branson alongside the likes of Mickey Gilley, Box Car Willie and Moe Bandy.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com www.wttrgv.com ice cream bars available. PARKS CALENDAR Wednesday, February 7 Attention Back Pain and Sciatica Sufferers! Back By Request…
Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “Amy and Frank did an outstanding job on my right leg and lower back, I feel so good that I can now put on my socks on my own and enjoy my time with my family.” - Reyes Garcia “Lately I am not paying a cleaning lady because I can do it myself!”- Roberta Barriere II “Now I can sleep the night through without pain.”- Marilyn Eisenmenger Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life. I’ve seen it many times. • It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… • It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… • It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… • It can ruin your travel plans… • And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems…and life problems. Here at Pure Physical Therapy, the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 100’s of people from right here in McAllen, and the rest of Hidalgo County who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica. It’s our SPECIALTY. By request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Pure Physical Therapy in McAllen Saturday, February 3, 2018 from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. Valley Star Awards deadline nears The deadline to cast your vote for your favorite entertainers is fast approaching. Each year we ask Winter Texans to help us choose the top entertainers who perform in Winter Texan resorts in the Rio Grande Valley. Now is your chance to decide who will receive the top awards at the annual Valley Star Awards Show, which is organized and hosted by Robert and Billie Ferguson. We tally your votes and announce the winners at the show. A ballot listing the nominees for Entertainer or Group of the Year overall, Male Vocalist of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year and eight other awards appears on page 33 of today’s edition of the Win-
ter Texan Times. When you fill out a ballot we ask you to vote for someone in every category, if you are familiar with the nominees. In the past, some ballots have come in with only one category marked. Also, be sure to write in your choice for Entertainer or Group of the Year. (Sometimes people forget to write in their favorite.) This can be any of the individuals or groups on the ballot, from any category. This award is open to groups as well as individual entertainers. “The Valley Star Awards are designed to honor the top entertainers and groups who are performing in the Rio Grande Valley this year,” said Robert Ferguson.

Entertainers who are not coming to the Valley this year are not eligible. The Fergusons compiled a comprehensive list of this year’s entertainers and the park activity directors voted to determine the top four nominees in each category. Only the top four nominees appear on the ballot. To vote for your favorite Valley entertainers, fill out the ballot in today’s paper and mail it to 1217 N. Conway, Mission TX 78572, or, vote online at www.wintertexantimes.com. Only one vote per person is allowed. This year, no photocopies of the ballot are permitted. Voters must either vote online (preferred method) or fill out the ballot printed in the Winter Texan Times newspaper. Ballots must be
received by Feb. 13, 2018 to be counted. The Valley Star Awards Show will be held, Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. at Casa Del Valle in Alamo. This is a new location and new time. The award show has a great lineup of entertainment including 4 His Glory, Kelli Marie, Dave & Daphne, Lindley Creek, Jason Whorlow and Vance Greek. Bullring. Both matadors have performed in Spain, France and Portugal during the 2017 season scoring huge triumphs, receiving many awards from the European fans, Renk said. Especially, Michelito who fought in Spain’s major rings, while Andre fought in the major rings in France. Their father, Mechel La Gravere, a French born matador de toros of the highest class, is very proud of his sons. “They have made me very proud, both young men were trained and groomed by me, and to have this great success, and be able to come to the United States is an honor I will never forget “ he said. “You can’t imagine the honor that the Santa Maria Bullring feels being able to present this esteemed family of matadors,” said Renk. “The bullring is in its 18th year, and this group of top level matadors and bulls is truly something the public will never forget, Renk explained. The mere size of the animals is the same weight and size of bulls that Mexico presents in its bullrings using picadors, but these animals are not hurt in any way and will go on to their future of appearing in major rodeos chas-
ing the clowns around for the rest of their life,” the bull ring owner said. The gates open at 1 p.m. and there is food and beverage, music and entertainment until the bullfight starts at 4 p.m. Come early and see Mario Ordaz, “The Singing Horseman” perform with his horse El Guapo. Also singing is La Bella Alexa Posas. Tickets are still just $30 sunny side, $35 shady side, and $40 for the ringside covered seats. All tickets are by reservation or walk up. Call the bullring at 1-956-481-3300 to make your reservation, and pay when you arrive. Checks or cash only, please. There is also bus service to and from the bullring by calling Journey Charters & Tours at 1-956-800-5356 or 1-956358-1934. Get a group together and do something you can’t do back home – go see a bloodless bullfight – and you’ll have some stories to tell when you go back north. This one’s got to be on your bucket list. Quilts and more to be on display at Green Gate Grove show Jinny Beyer’s patterns are among the most vivid and rich when it comes to quilting. This year, Green Grate Grove’s “Opportunity Quilt” is a Beyer pattern named Kinabalu. Like the Malaysian mountain which the pattern was named after – and which was near where Beyer lived at one point – the quilt “has an unmistakable richness of color and form. Triangles cut from a signature Jimmy Beyer border print add an unexpected touch to her classic blocks.” That quilt is just one of about 150 quilts that will be on display at the 14th annual Green Gate Grove Quilt show to be held Tuesday, Feb. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Green Gate Grove is located at 2135 S. Bentsen Palm Dr. in Palmview. “We just loved the (Kinabalu) pattern and decided on the design, the colors, the fabric – everyone contributes,” said Annette Sweet, one of the group’s quilters. “It is such an awesome king-sized – 93 by 93 - blanket made by the group.” That group, which started in 2000 with five quilters now have 40 quilters. The Kinabalu quilt will be up for raffle during the show and proceeds go back to the group to help them purchase supplies “to continue our community service projects,” Sweet said. “We make and donate more than 100 quilts each year for those in need, we sponsor a quilt-a-thon and make quilts for Rio Grande Valley Veterans.
“We also gather food and clothing and toys for children and families. Community service – helping others – is very important to all of us in the group.” Sweet said that besides the blankets, there will be all types of textile art including lap quilts, wall hangings, table tops, bags, wearable art such as scarves, jackets, vests and hats, and more textile items on display and for sale. “We also have a couple of antique quilts on display and a veteran quilt,” said Sweet, who has been quilting for nearly 20 years. “The quilts range from very traditional to very contemporary.” Sweet explained some of the differences between traditional and contemporary patterns. “Traditional quilt blocks have been around for a long time,” she said. “Sometimes the newer fabrics will give variations of that block. The contemporary are not so much individual blocks but give an overall design that’s different – often more vivid in its colors.” Sweet, from Michigan, said the loves both styles but prefers the “traditional with a twist to them.” There is no admission to the show and lunch will be available. “It’s a wonderful show and everyone is very friendly and we do a lot of community service.” Sweet said. “For our group it’s a way of sharing and fellowship, which is important to us.” For more information, call Sweet at (248) 921-6867.

RGV Quilt Guild Show displays beautiful quilts
Judging by the quality of the quilts on display at the RGV Quilt Guild Show held Jan. 26 and 27 at the South Padre Island Convention Centre, the show has to be one of the best shows around. Not only do local quilters participate, there are Winter Texan quilters from all over the United States and Canada who enter their best works to be displayed. Vendors came from across Texas to demonstrate the latest in quilting techniques, sell quilting frames and machines, quilting patterns, sewing notions, and all types of quilting materials and supplies. Their booths were set up on the perimeter walls and also in the outside hallway. It was a quilter’s heaven. In addition, an Opportunity Quilt was raffled. The money raised from the raffle is to be used to provide scholarships to students in the Rio Grande Valley interested in careers in fiber art. Cricket Rice won the Opportunity Quilt, which was created by Lila Helm. Quilts and quilted items were judging in the following categories: Challenge, Small (Crib) Quilts, Twin Quilts, Full Quilts, Queen Quilts, King Quilts, Wearable Items, Home Décor, Embroidered Quilts, Youth Entry Quilts and Art. In the Challenge category participants are given some materials and some instructions of how they must be used. They are then free to come up with their
own designs following the guidelines given to them. First place was awarded to Vicki Guerra; second to Renee Pageau, third to Paula McCutchan, and honorable mention to Terry Davis. In the Wall Hanging Division first place went to Lynn Benson; second, Bonnie Hall; third, Karyn Henney; and honorable mention to Mike Hall. Pleine Air Painters in Port Isabel Library During February
Laguna Madre Art League, “Plein Air” group: (from left to right) Diana Grenier, Donna Gordon, Karol Tucker, Shirley Hawthorne, Eleanor Seabrook. (Not pictured: Peggy Paris, Becky Crowell and visitor Caroline Dechert) The pictures seen hanging in the Port Isabel Library during February were painted “en plein air” – in the open air. That means not in a studio. Painting “en plein air” was considered a revolutionary approach to art in the mid-nineteenth century as Impressionist artists such as Monet and Renoir moved outside the academy and studio to capture light, shadow and color in natural settings. A “plein air” approach is an important element in U.S. art, particularly in the work of artists of the California School. The “plein air” group is part of the Laguna Madre Art League, and they can be spotted around Port Isabel and the Island trying to capture the picturesque buildings, waterways, beaches and street corners in oils, acrylics, watercolors or pastels. Below are some short profiles of some of the “plein air” painters who are part of the Laguna Madre Art League. Karol Tucker Tucker,a Winter Texasn, is always ready to go when it comes to “plein air” painting. A distinguished professional artist who mainly focuses on figures and portraits, she enjoys the change of scenery and subject matter she experiences while in the vicinity of SPI and Port Isabel. Over the years she has been juried into many national and international shows, receiving a number of awards. Tucker, who lives in Durham, N.C. and graduated with a degree in Fine Art, is a member of Oil Painters of America, the National Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society, and the Portrait Society of America. Her work can be seen on her website, www.karoltucker. com and at Seas the Day on Lighthouse Square in Port Isabel. Shirley Hawthorne Hawthorne grew up in rural South Jersey where she developed an appreciation for the beauty in simple things and a love of nature. Today, landscapes and natural forms are the subject of her paintings in oil and pastel. She holds a BS in education and also studied at the University of the Arts, the Pennsylvania Academy of
Fine Art and Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia. She taught art K-12 in Pittsburgh and Salem County, NJ. Hawthorne has won a variety of awards in numerous juried shows and has exhibited her work in the Noyes, Brownsville, and Hagley museums. You may enjoy her work at The Gallery in Port Isabel, the World Birding Center, and on Market Days on SPI. Eleanor Seabrook After a long career in teaching Seabrook, a Canadian transplant to South Dakota, travelled across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico using her RV as her studio. She works in acrylics and enjoys recording her travels. Her exhibit illustrates the use of “plein air” painting while travelling and features a view of Venice, Italy, which she visited in October 2017. The original drawing for the picture was done from the landing dock of her hotel, but the color work had to be completed from a photograph after she dropped her art kit in the canal. Her work has been exhibited in Ottawa and Southampton, Ontario as well as at Market Days on SPI. Donna Gordon Gordon is a pastel painter and teacher who primarily paints landscapes. She is intrigued by the coastal light and how it can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Her landscape paintings are of places where she has experienced that magic. She is a charter member of Austin Pastel Society and a member of the Pastel Society of New Mexico and Plein Air Painters of New Mexico. She, and her husband David, own Cloudcroft Gallery in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. Diana Grenier Grenier, also a winter Texan, lives and paints in the Les Cheneaux Islands of Michigan, making her winter home in Port Isabel. She is a member of The International Association of Pastel Society, The Pastel Society of America and The Great Lakes Pastel Society. Her work includes oil, pastel, acrylic, collage and watercolor combining realism and impression in portraits of people, landscapes and marine subjects. Grenier’s work has received many awards including the 2011 “Best of Show Gold Medal” for “Huron Point” and has been juried into major competitions including the Great Lakes Pastel Society National Competition and the Pastel Society of America Annual Show. Grenier’s work is displayed at Les Cheneaux Islands Art Gallery and may be seen at Market Days on SPI. There is no charge to visit the Plein Air group’s library display. For Library hours call 956-943-2265. For information on the Laguna Madre Art League contact Diana Franklin at dfranklin@rgv.rr.com.

In addition to its aquatic residents, Caribbean Journey is home to dozens of exotic plants, flowers, and trees found in the Sian Ka’an and are insulated by a film skylight roof. The new exhibit includes a glass dome built to withstand 200 mile-per-hour winds covering the addition. Fortunately, the exhibit was completed before Hurricane Harvey hit the Gulf Coast. Alex Nguyen, my guide, said the aquarium had minimal damage and was able to protect its many species of marine life during the storm that did so much damage just up the coast. Entering the domed area, Nguyen said visitors will enter a rain forest, complete with a waterfall. To the right was a pen of flamingoes, bright orange in color. In the middle, there were brightly colored birds including a green-winged macaw, and a toucan. On the left side, there were indi-

Don’t miss the Hawaiian Giant Calliwasp, a scary-looking snake considered to be vulnerable. Look for vampire bats and red-tailed boas in their own exhibits. Other displays taught the importance of the Mangrove forests that serve as nurseries for many different fish, like tarpons, snook and mangrove snappers, along with crabs, shrimp and mollusks. A Karst pool awaited a baby alligator now in the nursery when it gets large enough to be moved. A small palapa provided shelter for a two-toed sloth hiding up under the roof. Walking around the circle of the dome brings visitors face to face with a waterfall fronting a two-story aquarium tank where brightly colored fish swim alongside “well fed” sharks. WINTER TEXAN TIMES PARADE OF ORANGES
From to South Padre Island to fish in the beach surf, while Marilyn is into watercolor painting at their park. Marilyn’s brother, Don and wife, Sheila, who were with them, had worked on the Orange Grove float that was in the parade. They have been Valley visitors for 17 years and Sheila said, “We’re loving every minute of it.” The Green Bay woman said she enjoys the parade and seeing a whole bunch of grapefruit and oranges. During their winter stay they enjoy lots of activities including line dancing. She’s also one of Ronald McDonald’s Chapter Angels who support Ronald McDonald House in Harlingen. The couple also likes to exercise and watch the remote-controlled car races at the park. Tom and Arlene Mathias are also from Green Bay and met the Brunels at the Fun Fair for the first time. Saturday also marked the first time Tom had to put on sunscreen here. The couple who are in their second year at Bentsen Grove Resort in Palmview, have only been in the Valley two weeks and they have packed a lot into it, including ithe popular Senior Olympics playing cribbage and as partners they still have a pinochle tournament ahead of them in February. They also play pickleball at their park. Tom, an
Elks Lodge member, gave high marks to the McAllen Lodge for its Friday fish fry, which is a tradition in Wisconsin. “A lot in two weeks and more to do in the next three months, Tom concluded. Sitting on the sidewalk waiting for the parade to start were Bob and Pat Wanta, of Bevent, Wis. The parade was one of the last events for the couple who only booked the month of January at Mission Bell/Trade Winds RV Resort in Mission. Because they liked being in the Valley they already booked a return stay, but for two months next season. Bob is a cash crop farmer and the trip here was the first winter of any long time away from the farm. A Gold Wing trike motorcycle, brought with them in their fifth wheel toy hauler, is the way they were seeing places between Rio Grande City and South Padre
Island. They also made a trip to Nuevo Progreso, Mexico. While here the Wantas took line dancing and ballroom lessons, played cards and helped with the park’s parade float. “It’s been wonderful,” Pat commented on being in the RGV. Another first-time couple to the parade were Larry and Korella Selzler, from Dilworth, Minn., which is across the river from Fargo, S.D. They have spent four winters in the Valley at Winter Green Park in Harlingen and he loves going to flea markets. In fact, last year he had to buy a trailer here so he could get everything back to Dilworth. His wife he related said, “that won’t happen again.” But Larry said she picks up things too. They like playing cards and especially fishing, whether it’s up north in “the land of 10,000 lakes” or the waters See PARADE OF ORANGES pg. 42

around South Padre Island. When Korella returned from a stroll, she claimed she “catches all the big ones.” He says she gets to fish more because he has to drive the boat. Larry, who noted he has 40 rods at home so he doesn’t have to change any of the tackle, plans to get to the Island soon to go surf fishing. Jim and Shirley Johnson, from the Brainard, Minn. area, are also plenty busy. Jim said, “We like lots of jams” and Shirley added “we like dancing.” They also like to hike at the Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge in the Alamo area. The couple staying at Lemon Tree RV Inn in Mission agree that they can’t pass up a rummage or park sale. And they like eating out, which is almost all the time, they admitted. Shirley said, “There is lots of good food and it’s reasonably priced.” They have been in the RGV for five years and only missed the Mission parade last year. “I like to see how the floats are decorated,” Shirley said. “Get our feet wet in the Gulf and pick up seashells is an activity we like,” Jim said. They also enjoy seeing many of the
entertainers, which has included a couple from their area back home. A Nebraska trio were part of a larger group on hand to see the parade. John and Sharon Bitter are in their 19th year of coming here from their home in Tekamah, Neb. They usually attend four parades in the Valley, each season. “I want to get out of the snow,” Sharon said as the main reason in coming to stay at Orange Grove RV Park in Edinburg. Another long-time Winter Texan is Rose Marie Helgoth, from St. Libory, Nev., who has been here 22 years. Her reason for coming now, she said is “to be with friends” since she lost her husband a few years ago. She has been to the parade a few times, and at the park she enjoys bingo and any event that includes a little food. She recalled once being a part of a lawn chair drill team for a couple of years. Fortunately, for the Winter Texans and native Texans alike, they were able to enjoy the Mission event as “it didn’t rain on their parade. ”
