The celebration of Winter Texans is three events rolled up into one “mega” fiesta. Shary Municipal Golf Course hosts the “Fiesta on the Golf Course” golf tournament on Friday, Feb. 9, while the Mission Historical Museum hosts the Mexican Artesano Market Days on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9 and 10 and the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce hosts the Winter Texan Fiesta concert on Saturday, Feb. 10. This year’s Winter Texan Fiesta concert features a packed lineup of powerhouse entertainers, including David Church and his Straight Up Country Band, Sherwin & Pam Linton, Adam Pope & the Rebels, Terry Smith and Southern Anthem. Terry Smith and his 2,000 songs return to the Valley Singer and songwriter Terry Smith says he has pitched songs to just about anyone who will listen – from from “the country artists of the day to the Texas Rangers baseball team and Captain Kangaroo.” With more than 2,000 songs on his resume, he is considered a writer extraordinaire. He has released 14 albums of original material throughout his career, his most recent being “Ten Miles East of West.” Smith has returned to the Rio Grande Valley and will continue his tour through South Texas at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Winter Texan Fiesta. He has 10 more performances scheduled through February. As a singer, Terry has steadily built a following over the years in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. Smith, who was born in Cordell, Okla. and reared in Denton, Texas, taught English and coached baseball in public school systems for 30 years in Texas and Tennessee. After retiring from teaching, Smith began to pursue in earnest his love of songwriting and singing country music. His first album was a country gospel project, “Look at My Hands” in 1979,

which features his initial version of “Far Side Banks of Jordan,” a song featured twice in the movie “The Apostle” and included on the film’s soundtrack CD. The song was heard in its entirety at the close of “Ring of Fire,” a TV movie based on the life of June Carter Cash that debuted in the spring of 2013. “Jordan” has been recorded close to 300 times by many different artists, including Ernie Ashworth Terry of Grand Ole Opry fame, as well as the Statler Brothers on their album “Amen.” In the spring of 1999 June Carter Cash released “Press On,” her first solo album in over 24 years, on which she and Johnny Cash re-recorded “Far Side Banks of Jordan.” “Press On” won a Grammy in 2000. Terry has written songs that were recorded by well-known country music artists such as Kitty Wells, Chris LeDoux, The

Oak Ridge Boys, Daniel O’Donnell, Kris Kristofferson, Patty Loveless, George Hamilton IV, Allison Krauss, Roy Acuff, Jimmy Fortune, and many more. Whether performing by himself with only his guitar—as he frequently does in churches and smaller venues—or with a band, Terry fills his shows with a heavy dose of his original songs Smith mixed with standard favorites. His humor, his stories about songs, and the various kinds of songs he sings give audiences an emotional roller-coaster ride. The motto of the national Songwriters Association is, “It all begins with a song.” Terry strongly believes that a performance is all about the song. When performing with a band, he frequently reminds them, “It’s not about me. It’s not about you. It’s

about the song. Let’s have fun during this show. But let’s not do anything to damage the integrity of the songs.” Smith is a member of the Traditional Country Music Hall of Fame and was voted Traditional Music Association’s Songwriter of the Year in 1995 and 1996.

Lexington board announces 25th annual Stage Door Canteen CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – USS Lexington Museum On the Bay Board President Pat Veteto has announced plans for the 25th Annual Stage Door Canteen to be held aboard the USS LEXINGTON Museum on Friday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. The upcoming event will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the commissioning of USS Lexington (CV-16). Steve Banta, museum executive director, said this year’s show will recreate the Canteen shows from WW II when famous entertainers traveled the world performing for service men and women far from home. Headlining the star-studded cast will be the USS Lexington Big Band Orchestra. Celebrated vocal artists Jason Armstrong, Flicka Rahn, Carla Gardiner, and Victoria Majors will perform songs of the era. Scott Plant, a recipient of the

Texas CMA Hall of Fame Award, will entertain you with his fiddle. Described as a magical evening of nostalgia, the show has been a complete sell-out for the last 24 years. Tickets are $60 per couple, $35 single for open seating. Reserved tables of ten are available for either $400 or $500. The higher priced tables are closer to the dance floor. Advance ticket purchase is required; tickets will not be sold at the door. Ticket funds are used for continued restoration and maintenance of the USS Lexington Museum. Dale & Gayle and a pair of Crabapples: Having fun in retirement

Eight years ago, the Dale and Gayle show hit the road. “It took me a while to convince her how much fun it would be,” said Dale Eisenhauer. “She was just a roadie up until then.” The roadie – who only had played the piano and sang in church – finally relented. “Just the other day, eight years later, I told her ‘you just played your 1,000th performance,” Dale said. “It doesn’t seem real sometimes but it has been real fun.” The performance count will continue to rise this year as the Dale and Gayle show has returned to the Rio Grande Valley – along with alter egos Miss Crabapple and Grumpy Crabapple – to share music, laughter and fellowship with their audiences. Ironically, that 1,000th performance occurred at the same place as their first performance – at Leisure World Mobile Home Park in Weslaco. “We gave out CDs and were really glad that it happened at our hometown park,” Dale said. “But I was sure tired the next morning.” The couple were told by a friend who was living at Leisure World that they needed to come visit to see what it was like. Dale and Gayle drove to the Valley in their motorhome and planned to stay three days. Those days turned into six weeks. “The next year we came down and stayed three months,” Dale said. “After that we decided that we needed to buy something bigger if we were going to stay.” Now, Dale and Gayle reside at Rolling Homes RV park in Mission where Dale is

also the park’s pastor. Both were teachers for about 30 years and Dale says “whether teaching, preaching or singing, we want everyone to be happy and have a good time.” Dale started a garage band when he was 16 but decided that he wasn’t going to be able to make a livign out of music at the time. Thanks to his school mentors he started to love the idea of teaching and did that for 30 years. After he retired, he took up music full time. “When I finally convinced my wife to play music I wanted a bass player, but she had been trained as a piano player,” Dale said. “So we bought a keyboard and split it down the middle. With her left hand she’s my bass player, and with her right hand she plays the piano. We have people in the audience who are looking around, convinced they hear background tracks because of the bass they hear, so we show them in the show and Gayle will do a little bass run – we don’t use tracks. We do it the hard way.” The latest addition to their show is Miss Crabapple. Gayle will dress up and, along

with Dale – aka Grumpy Crabapple will do a skit where she calls the park manager to complain about just anything. The routine has quickly become a hit – especially since she stared “roasting” residents. “Bentsen Grove called and wanted us to do something special for their volunteers – roast them,” Dale said. “I said ‘tell us their names and I’m sure she can gripe about every one of them. They had a ball. She does real situations about the parks and overexaggerates them – you could actually imag-

Just a hop, skip and jump off Interstate 2, nestled within the Victoria Palms RV Resort lies the Victoria Palms Restaurant – a virtual diamond just off the beaten path. Actually, it’s just a hop and skip off the beaten path (you don’t even need the jump), and a visit to this restaurant will be worth every second, and every dime you pay. Camilla (my 13-year-old daughter) and I visited the restaurant right before Thanksgiving – two days later we were there again (with one of Camilla’s friends Ximena) for their Thanksgiving buffet – which had all the delicious traditional fixins’ for the holiday, but also mixed in a few tongue-tantalizing Cajun dishes – like jambalaya and Cajun turkey. (They had the common – and amazingly moist – regular turkey there as well.) The girls enjoyed sampling several things – Ximena especially tore into everything potato while Camilla was a roll and turkey girl. It was an amazing display of a wide variety of food and people just kept coming in. The reason we were there on Thanksgiving – and I love to cook on Thanksgiving – is because this restaurant wowed both of us just two days earlier as Camilla and I stopped in for lunch. We’re both glad we did.

As usual, my daughter jumped straight to the breakfast menu – and they serve breakfast anytime. She ordered two eggs, over medium, sausage, hash browns and French toast. Just a few seconds after they placed the dish in front of her, while I was done talking to the chef, I turned to ask her how the sausage was – I didn’t need an answer; they were gone and she was chewing away with the grin of a Cheshire cat. What registered the highest for her, however, was the French toast – she described it as “soft, sweet and tasty.” She saved it for last and said it left a satisfying taste in her mouth afterwards. I ordered the barbeque chicken with corn on the cob, Texas toast and baked beans. Yup, this was no “use your fork” meal. It. Was. Awesome! The barbeque sauce was a little tangy, a little sweet and deliciously messy,

even though the tender chicken could easily be cut with a fork just as well. The baked beans were the way my mom made them and the corn was sweet and juicy enough to make a mess by itself. Palm View ranks as top course in Upper Valley

For the second straight year Palm View Golf Course has been named the favorite golf course in the Upper Valley by Winter Texans, tied this time with the 2015-16 winner Los Lagos. It goes to show that reinvesting in something can bring about positive results. “The weather has been good and we have had a really good turnout and rounds are up,” said Carlos Espinosa, director of golf at the public course for the City of McAllen. “We are getting more rounds, the weather is good and we are hearing a lot of positive comments about our greens. We’ve been getting great compliments on our greens and that is very humbling – it always is no matter how many times you hear it.” The greens of the par-72 course that measures 5,779 yards from its middle tees – but can turn into a lengthy 6,771 yards from the back tees – were resurfaced in Summer 2017 with what Espinosa says is still a Bermuda-style grass but one that is superior to previous grasses and is performing extremely well. One of the many reasons golfers of all skill levels are attracted to Palm View are the large greens and fairways. That

doesn’t mean it’s a simple course, however. Instead of waiting for Winter Texans to come to him, he went out to see them and find out what the course could do to better serve them “I got to know the customer better and identify what they wanted and implemented a program that would benefit them and us.” The course has gone through major renovations over the years but now is finally taking a break. While the course may be undergoing a little time off, it doesn’t mean that Espinosa or his staff are doing the same. “Hard work never ends and we owe it to those who come here and play here and expect a certain level of quality,” Espinosa said. “Hard work never ends when you want to keep people happy and want to keep the course in shape. It’s all about improving – the course, the staff, and myself.”

Heavy wind, moguls running along and behind – and sometimes through – lush fairways, which sometimes are leaning (toward water, of course) and challenging options are what Los Lagos has in store. And despite – or maybe because of – all those challenges, Los Lagos, the Edinburg public course, tied for Winter Texan’s Favorite Golf Course in the Upper Valley with McAllen’s Palm View Golf Course. The links style course was the 2015-16 winner of the contest and finished second in 2016-2017. Los Lagos can be challenging for the best of golfers. Beside the moguls there are doglegs begging a golfer to try and clear them, not knowing what lies behind them. More often than not, taking the traditional path is the smart play – but cutting those corners sure can be more rewarding, and more penalizing as well. Located at 1720 South Longoria Road in Edinburg, Los Lagos’ signature hole is the intimidating par-3 No. 14, which plays anywhere from 130 to 160 yards depending on the tee and pin placements. With those five sets of tees, they can be hitting wedges into the greens instead of long irons. It’s still challenging but the enjoy playing here. We’re honored that the like this course with its rolling hills and fairways and greens. That’s what it’s all about, coming out here and having a good time with a courteous staff and a wonderful course.”

Stebbins said about 25 percent of the people play golf at least some of the time. “The public is invited. All they have to do is stop at the gate and let security know they are playing golf and they’ll let you through,” said Stebbins, who moved to the Long Island Village with his wife 10 years ago from Indiana. “We have our Village Grill restaurant adjacent to the parking lot and it’s really a nice course.” But don’t think it’s too easy though. One resident, also a write, wrote in a golf journal that it was the toughest golf course to play. Long Island Village is located 33840 South Garcia in Port Isabel. Long Island Village makes its first appearance as a Winter Texan favorite this year, finishing second between two perennial favorites – River Bend and South Padre Island courses. The news took Garry Stebbins, golf committee chairman, by pleasant surprise. “That is fantastic,” he said. “We don’t get too much press, but we have a wonderful golf course.” The course is an 18-hole par-3 course located in Port Isabel just across the Intracoastal Waterway. Hole distances range from 50 yards to 140 yards. But that 140 yards can feel like 170 or more since golfers are hitting into the wind. Even No. 12 at only 50 yards can be a challenge with all 50 yards being over water. The course has water on 75 percent of the holes, including the signature hole, the 110-yard No. 8. Water follows the fairway along the right side and the green is tucked away behind it at the end. “You need some accurate shots out here,” Stebbins said. “The good thing is that you can be done with a round in two hours or less because it’s a par-3.”

If River Bend Golf Course was one of the best kept secrets of the Rio GrandeValley, the Winter Texans are doing their best to change that. For the second straight year those Winter Texans have voted the course their most favorite in the Lower Rio Grande Valley River Bend was built as a nine-hole course but expanded to 18 holes in 1985. It’s situated along the banks of the Rio Grande and has been considered one of the best-kept secrets in the Valley mainly because there has been no marketing – zero, nada, zilch. That changed when the Barnard family purchased the course in 2015. Now General Manager Jeremy Barnard and his dad and uncle – owners of the course – have huge plans. Howling Trails Golf Course

Raul Gutierrez, complex administrator at Howling Trails Golf Course, located at 1910 Hole In One Dr. in Mission, is excited about what the future is bringing to the course. He has already watched a complete transformation of a golf course into a learning and recreational center. He’s even happier about the fact that La Joya ISD is investing back into the course, formerly known as Martin Valley Ranch. The course is surrounded by seven Winter Texan parks and has undergone some major construction on the outskirts of the property since the school district purchased it. Gutierrez said that the planning stage was focused highly on not disturbing the Winter Texans and their routines – especially when it came to the golf course. He said that the planning has worked and the Winter Texan community hasn’t missed a beat when in terms of their regular group outings or if they just want to randomly hit the course. Howling Trails has lush Bermuda tees, fairways and greens, The facility boasts 27 holes with a par-72 on the first 18 holes and a par 36-on the back nine. The 18-hole course ranges from 6,175 yards from the tips to a nice, short 4,881 yards from the most front tees. The 9-hole course (holes 19-27) ranges from 3,003 yards to 3,459 from the blue tees. The course has an abundance of Live Oak, Mesquite and Palm trees, as well

as native plant and wildlife. The Howling Trails course is a fun yet challenging course - bunkers and water come into play on six holes. The school board approved the purchase of the golf course in 2014 and set out plans to build a natatorium, tennis courts, a student learning assistance center, fields for science experiments and possibly a planetarium. The learning assistance center is part of an overall plan to have a place in several areas where students can access computers and the Internet. They also planned to extend the district’s golf program to include sixth-grade students. It wouldn’t be a new program, he said, just an expansion that wouldn’t cost much to kick off because each of the middle school campuses already have golf equipment. The course already hosts high school tournaments for La Joya, La Joya Palmview and La Joya Juarez-Lincoln and will soon be hosting the district tournament. Before that, however, there will be some more work done to improve the course, and every golfer will be happy to see. “Now that the water park is done being built, we will start working on the irrigation and a driving range,” Gutierrez said. “We need the driving range for the high school tournaments but it will be something that everyone can use.”

Improved Brownsville Golf Center Challenges Golfers

There was a time when golfers complained about the deterioration of the Brownsville Golf Center golf course. Of course, when is there a time when golfers don’t complain – too much wind, not enough wind, unlevel playing surfaces, the hole was too small, they were robbed... the list goes on and on. Those times are long gone, according to city officials, as the city has reinvested into the course, making major improvements – and the response has been extremely positive. The Brownsville Golf Center opened in 1971 and was designed by Donald Sechrest. It measures 6,144 yards from the

longest tees and went through a renovation in 1999, when the City of Brownsville took over management of the operation. The course boasts a tropical landscape with challenging holes that features Bermuda grass and wide open fairways. While that may sound easy, water hazards come into play on nearly every hole. The front nine is a par-34 with three par 3s, one par 5 and 5 par 4s. It’s a short nine holes, ranging from 2,306 yards to 2,765 yards with three tee boxes. Also adding to the challenge are raised greens, water on nine holes and 10 grass bunkers. The No. 3 450-yard, par 4 will take a tee shot that will need to carry water and not fly off

the path into the trees left and right, which pinch this fairway. Oh, and there’s water down the entire left side of the fairway. Number four has water down the entire left side of the 340-yard, par 4, plus a tough approach to the green thanks to water cutting into the left side of the fairway in front of the green and some trees that can block the shot if you come in too far on the left. The back nine is longer, a par 36 that measures 2,785 to 3,379 yards and has water on nine holes. The fairways are longer and the greens are a little harder. The par 4, No. 16 is a challenging 403yard hole with a tight fairway thanks to

out of bounds marked on the left side and water on the right along the first half of the fairway before it dog legs left and makes a tough approach to a raised green with water on the left and right side. The finishing hole – No. 18 – is a 601yard, par 5 from the tip, but it’s not just a grip-it-and-rip-it hole. It doglegs left and to make it more challenging there’s water close to the green on the right side. The course’s layout, despite prior conditions, was worth the trip. Now, with the course being in the best shape it has been in past years, it’s even more appealing to golfers of any level.

Tony Butler Golf Course Namesake Remembered

If there is one course in the Rio Grande Valley that epitomizes golf, it’s Tony Butler Golf Course. The Harlingen public golf course bears the name of the man who helped bring some of the sport’s greatest athletes to the Rio Grande Valley for professional tournaments during the Great Depression. His style of play, a consistent short game and accurate putts, came to reflect the character of skills required for success to those pursuing challenges on the Tony Butler Municipal Golf Course. Born in Ganado, Texas, on April 19, 1908, Tony Butler died at the age of 71 on Dec. 9, 1979, following a 49-year career in golf. He gained fame with the four wood as he occasionally played entire

rounds of golf using only that club, and he proved to be accurate with the putter. Butler became captain of the Austin High School golf team and then at age 20 defeated Tinsley Penick for the Austin City Championship. His college golf career at the University of Texas was brief before he turned professional in 1928. However, later he returned to the University of Texas as the first golf coach at the university. In his Professional Golf Association career he advanced to compete against legendary professionals such as Gene Sarazen, Walter Hagen, and Dick Metz. In 1931, Butler won the Texas PGA title by shooting seven under par on the last

10 holes to beat Metz by one shot. Butler finished in the money six straight times in 1931. The next year, Butler finished second when the Texas PGA Championship was played at the Harlingen Country Club. In 1934, Butler traveled to the British Colonial Open at Nassau, The Bahamas, where he finished second to the 1927 leading money winner Bobby Cruickshank by a single shot. Butler was tall, thin, with small hands and slender arms. He was a regular competitor across Texas. One of his more notable highlights occurred in 1933 when he defeated the reigning National Open champion, Gene Sarazen, in an exhibition match at the old Corpus

Christi Country Club on Upriver Road. Shortly thereafter, Butler was contacted by the Harlingen Country Club about its golf pro position, a position he kept until 1937. He eventually left Harlingen for another position, and the Rio Grande Valley lost its position as part of the PGA Tour to bigger markets. His name reappeared on June 20, 1973, when the Harlingen municipal course was renamed in his honor. He retired to become a professional emeritus in 1975. Even though it’s private, Harlingen Country Club’s golf course gives Winter Texans ample opportunities to play. Because of that, those Winter Texans have voted the 18-hole golf course as their second favorite golf course in the Mid-Valley. “A lot of them say we are in the best shape we’ve been in,” said Liz Richardson, the club’s LPGA Professional. “We hold Winter Texan Mondays every other week where they can come out and play and sometimes we’ll have burgers and stuff for after. The course was opened in 1968 and its multiple tees leave golfers to decide how much of a challenge they want to take. They course measures 6,541 yards from the championship tees. Fairways are common Bermuda and the greens are Champion Bermuda that is similar in appearance and performance to bentgrass.

Like that baseball player in the minor leagues where the scouting report is something along the lines of “should be an impact player in the pros, maybe as soon as next year,” for Treasure Hills, next year has arrived. After being pretty much left in no man’s land for several years – up for sale but with no buyers, the course finally was sold and the new owners immediately got to work on all aspects of the course. Walk into Tierra Del Sol just about any time of the day that it’s open and you’ll see some golfers – on the course, on the green, in the pro shop or chowing down on some of the best breakfast tacos in the Valley. It just seems like everything continues

to get better at the Pharr municipal course. Looking back a few years ago – when the course had incomplete cart paths, balding fairways and greens that wouldn’t hold the loftiest of shots – many wouldn’t believe it’s the same course. Now the cart paths are complete, there is grass pretty

much from tee to green, there are no sudden ponds appearing due to poor drainage and golf balls will stay on the green with the correct approach. All this is because the city decided to invest in their course – close to a $1 million. Golfers would normally have to start out on No. 1, which was notorious for letting great shots just roll off the back. Then as they moved on to No. 2, the temporary ponds from rainfall and/or poor irrigation, combined with the end of a cart path would make the start of the round as unmemorable as any round in the Valley. That, however, has all changed and word of mouth continues to bring golfers back who haven’t played the course in many years. Winter Texan rounds are up due to those reasons – and more. The course has leagues and preferential tee times

The name alone rings majestic – South Padre Island Golf Club. Winter Texans clearly feel the same way, voting the course with the most picturesque of views of the Laguna Madre and South Padre Island – even to the point of distracting golfers from the tee box – as their third favorite golf course in the Lower Valley. The South Padre Island Golf Club will challenge you while providing a relaxing, picturesque backdrop. A golfer’s accuracy will be tested on the somewhat tight fairways, water hazards and sand traps. “All in all, our goal is to provide you with a quality experience that includes exceptional service and a comfortable

atmosphere,” states the clubs web site. A nice breeze, a bright sun and the sound of seagulls.... this is a Picasso painting on golf. Located at 1 Golf House Road in Laguna Vista, the course can go from a normal to challenging course to extremely difficult when the wind decides to pay a visit. Golfers will never get away from that wind in South Texas – it’s made for the golf courses. South Padre Island Golf is a public course with 18 holes, par 72 and measures in at 6,800 yards. Greens are good, with little break to the hole. The fairways are in good shape. The sand traps are also looking good.” Located at 700 E. Two years later in 2006, Sharon reached the expert level, the same year she lost her husband. She found shuffleboard to be “a very social thing where you meet many nice people.” Many of the players are Canadians, with many having a background in the popular sport of curling, which has some similarities. Bill Piett from Erickson, Manitoba, has played the sport a lot over the past 30 years and had his first trophy in 1988. He became the first one to reach 2,000 points a few years back. Piett, who stays at Pine to Palm Resort in Weslaco, is now at about 2,300, but attributes much of it to good partners. Currently, for doubles, his partner is Jim Coates, from Brandon Manitoba, who also stays at Pine to Palm, a park started by a Canadian with a large clientele of those from Canada. Piett has a new partner for the mixed division in Shirley Crocker, coming from Victoria Palms in Donna. Piett, who has been to international shuffleboard tourneys in Australia and Japan, plays every week. He likes sports and says “shuffleboard is easy to play, it’s inexpensive and you meet a lot of people.” One of those he met, was Clayton Bakke from Regina, Saskatchewan, a very good opponent for two years. Now Piett sees Bakke’s son, Garth, at the tournaments. The younger Bakke, who has been at Pine and Palms for five years, was shuffling last Friday and said he had the privilege of having his expert dad as a partner for two years after being introduced to the sport along with

strategies. Both had also curled back home in Canada. Usually if one is good at curling, it carries over to shuffleboard, Bakke said. This is the second year he has been joined by Eric Polzin, from Janesville, Wisconsin, as partner. For the mixed division, Bakke’s partner is Barb Brezinski, from The Pas, Manitoba, who has been among the shufflers from Pine to Palm for the last 17 winters. She has been in tournaments for the past seven years and reached expert status two years ago. The courts are considered among the best in the RGV, and he stressed the condition of them is only made possible by the volunteers. A number of residents return to the park each year because of the great shuffleboard courts. Yauchzae said, “A lot of shufflers [here] are the best in the state.” Many of the top players will be seen at the Feb. 18 GAO Awards Banquet. It will be held at Texas Trails RV Resort in Pharr starting with refreshment time at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m.

The two brothers, Michelito Lagravere and Andre Lagravere, will face off at the Santa Maria Bull Ring in La Gloria, Texas. Andre Lagravere performed a stunning performance last season at Santa Maria Bull Ring. The then-17-year-old matador was brutally tossed by a bull, who shredded his suit of lights (as the matador’s uniform is called). After being attended by medics, he returned to the ring with his mid-section taped and proceded to face the last bull of the day. While the bulls are uninjured in bloodless bullfights, the sometimes thrilling, sometimes chilling performances by the brave matadors are highly dangerous for those who face the 1,000-pound bulls with no protection, no horses, no weapons – only a red cape. Despite his injuries last season, Andre was relentless as he forced the bull to comply with his cape demands, passing the bull with five to six series on each side. He then went to adorning passes that would end up with him kneeling in front of the bull touching his horn. The fans went crazy with a constant roar of “Ole!” said Fred Renk, owner of Santa Maria Bullring. He would then continue as if driven by a higher power, Renk said. Passing the bull closer and closer to his body, he ended the fight by leaning over the horns and removing the rose attached by velcro to the bulls back, symbolically killing the animal. The accolades went on and on with flowers, hats, cigars and more flowers as he took his triumphant walk around the ring three times, Renk recounted. Both of these brother matadors performed in Spain, France and Portugal during the 2017 season scoring huge

He does something that 99 percent of all other artists cannot do and that is to stand on their own music.” Terry Smith Terry Smith, who was voted the National Traditional Music Association’s Songwriter of the Year in both 1995 and 1996, wrote “Far Side Banks of Jordan,” triumphs, receiving many awards from the European fans, Renk said. Michelito fought in Spain’s major rings, while Andre fought in the major rings in France. Their father is Mechel La Gravere, a French born matador de toros of the highest class. The Santa Maria Bullring is in its 18th year, and this group of top level matadors and bulls is truly something the public will never forget, Renk explained. The size of the animals is the same weight and size of bulls that Mexico presents in its bullrings using picadors, but these animals are not hurt in any way and will go on to their future of appearing in major rodeos. Renk invites all Winter Texans to come out to see the beauty and poise of the matadors as they display their skill and bravery in the only bloodless bullfight arena in 49 of the United States. The gates open at 1 p.m. and there is food and beverage, music and entertainment until the bullfight starts at 4 p.m. Come early and see Mario Ordaz, “The Singing Horseman” perform with his horse El Guapo. Also singing is La Bella Alexa Posas. Tickets are $30 sunny side, $35 shady side, and $40 for the ringside covered seats. All tickets are by reservation or walk up. which was featured twice in Robert Duvall’s movie, “The Apostle.” Both Johnny and June Carter Cash recorded the song in the 70s, as did the Carter Family, including Mother Maybelle and her sisters, as a part of the Carter family album. The Carter Family version of “Jordan” was used on “The Apostle” soundtrack CD, and “Jordan” was sung at both Johnny and June Carter Cash’s funerals. The song has been recorded by several hundred artists over the years and continues to be one of the most requested songs at Smith’s performances. Terry’s renown as a songwriter has attracted many well-known artists to record songs he has written. To name a few, this includes The Statler Brothers, Roy Acuff, Kitty Wells, Oak Ridge Boys, Chris LeDoux, Johnny and June Carter Cash, Ernie Ashworth, Kris Kristofferson, Patty Loveless, Jimmy Fortune, and including premiere bluegrass groups in the country. A traditional country singer in his own right, Terry has released 14 albums, the most recent being this year in February. Terry’s ability to write songs that get into your heart, mind and soul is the driving force behind his music. Southern Anthem The Pausewang Family, known professionally as Southern Anthem, is among the most popular family shows in the Valley. Their performances continue to draw large crowds wherever they are performing. The family’s musical talent is amazing, and Wendy (Mom), Derek, Mikaela, and Logan have a brand new “Branson Style” show for 2018. They are especially proud they had the opportunity to appear on Nashville’s WSM Radio’s Midnight Opry show in 2017. A couple of years ago, they were featured on the RFD-TV network “Shotgun Red’s River Boat Show” in Nashville and this past October were featured guest stars on RFD-TV’s Penny Gilly’s show. They are also members of the Gatesville Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. The Pausewang family’s musical talent goes back many generations. Wendy’s grandfather, James Adams, played bass for Benny Thomasson who was the forefather of a new style of fast fiddle playing they called “Texas Fiddling”. Today, Logan, age 12, James Adams great, great grandson is making his mark with his “Texas Fiddling” style. Mikaela, 17, sings lead on most of their songs with an amazing voice that always captures the crowd. Derek, 18, sings and is a very talented lead guitar and mandolin player, and he also plays the banjo. Wendy sings, and plays rhythm guitar and saxophone. Adam Pope & the Rebel Roots Adam Pope & the Rebel Roots is a high-energy, country/rockabilly group based just outside of Nashville, Tenn. Together they produce the raw sounds and unbridled energies of the Sun Record era and combine it with respectful polish and substantive songwriting soaked in classic country music sentiments. Their shows are woven together with Hee-Haw like humor and front porch storytelling. Adam Pope & the Rebel Roots have played on the “Music City Roots” show in

Nashville, RFD-TV’s “Midwest Country Show” from Sandstone, Minn., hosted the legendary “Midnight Jamboree” on WSM radio and Adam joined a cast of performing songwriters who were featured in a TV series called “Nashville Unleashed,” airing on Blue Highways TV, Angel Two, on the Dish Network, Heartland channel and more. In September 2015, just a few days before the 14th anniversary of 9-11, Adam wrote and released a song called “Ain’t Over it Yet” that quickly gained the attention of Nashville’s WTN 99.7 FM Morning News talk show host, Ralph Bristol. Ralph has played the song multiple times on his program and Adam has become a staple performing the song at many patriotic and military appreciation events across the nation. Pope has recently released several projects, including teaming up with Johnny Cash’s and Carl Perkins original drummer, W.S. “Fluke” Holland to record original music at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis. And most recently Adam and his wife, Amy, joined together on an album called “Songs of Faith & Family” with traditional gospel songs. Sherwin & Pam Linton Sherwin Linton got an early start in performing. By age 16 he had his own radio show on KWAT radio in Watertown, South Dakota. Sherwin and his band “The Rocketeers” were soon in demand all over eastern South Dakota. Moving to Minneapolis in 1957, Sherwin formed “The Fender Benders,” which became a very popular ballroom and nightclub act that “rocked and rolled” audiences from Minnesota to the west coast in the early to mid-sixties. Having several Rock-A-Billy records successfully released in the Midwest, Sherwin went to Nashville in 1966 where he recorded “Cotton King”, a song that catapulted him to the top of the Country Music charts. “The King of Country Music,” Roy Acuff, became aware of Sherwin’s talents while they toured in 1968. Acuff and his partner Wesley Rose signed Sherwin to Hickory Records and brought Sherwin to the Grand Ole Opry. Sherwin has received five CMA nominations, eight Grammy nominations and has been inducted into 11 Halls of Fame. He has been awarded “RGV Entertainer of the Year” three times. In 2015, Pioneer Public Television completed a two-hour documentary film of Sherwin’s life and career “Sherwin Linton-Forever on The Stage.” After 62 years Sherwin is still singing the songs of Elvis, Marty Robbins, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, and Johnny Cash. Sherwin is joined on stage by his wife, Pam Linton, a star in her own right. Pam is a member of the National Traditional Country Music Hall of Fame. This petite lady amazes the audience with her “Big Voice.” Pam’s repertoire includes traditional country, folk, gospel, and rock-nroll standards.
