Petanque competitions create new friendships, good times
“I’m coming back here for sure next year!”
Louise Richard, a new Winter Texan from Calgary, Alberta, Canada
There are some things you just have to do when you come to South Texas. You have to try the authentic Mexican food. You have to go to a folklórico and mariachi concert. And you have to go to Santa Maria Bull Ring to see the bullfights. Definitely something you can’t do back home if you’re not from South Texas. See BULLFIGHT pg. 4

Louise Richard, in her first year at Pleasant Valley from Alberta, Canada, tosses a metal ball during the Golden Age Olympics Petanque Tournament. She is on a three-member team with her brother, Benoit LeBlanc, seated behind, from New Brunswick, Canada, and their Captain Denis Seucier, from Quebec, Canada.
By Herb Moering Nearly 240 players, 90 percent of them French Canadians, showed up for the opening ceremonies of the Golden Age Olympic (GAO) Petanque Tournament at Pleasant Valley Resort in Mission. The resort has offered the sport of French derivation for about 20 years, hosting the GAO tournament about 10 years. After the ceremonies, 28 teams headed for the 14 courts to begin play, a sport similar to the Italian bocce ball or lawn bowling. Teams usually involve three members, with one person tossing a tiny ball called a “jack” in English, out onto the crusher dust court surface, followed by the tossing of the first metal ball about 4 inches in diameter. Each player tosses two balls in each round and points are scored by getting the See (GAO) PETANQUE pg. 39
Ladies enjoy Bill Chrastil performance at Red Hat Festival of Tables
The annual Red Hat Festival of Tables was held Jan. 29 at Trophy Gardens in Alamo. Each year, local Red Hat chapters join with chapters in Winter Texan parks across the Valley gather at this festival to meet and socialize. Ladies in various chapters choose themes representing holidays, sports teams, countries, movies and Red Hat activities to decorate their festive tables. Two ladies from different groups are asked to sponsor tables. The rest of the ladies who attended drew a number when they entered to find the table where they were to sit. That gave ladies from all over the country a chance to meet Red Hat ladies from other chapters. They were able
to find out what they were doing in the Valley and what their home chapters were doing as well. Approximately 240 ladies arrived by 11 a.m. to view the tables set up by the other 60 ladies, for a total of 300 Red Hatters in attendance. After the viewing the tables, the ladies enjoyed a chicken dinner catered by Balli’s of Mission. Then it was time for the entertainment. Much to the pleasure of those attending, event chairman Jan Bergman was able to book Bill Chrastil, a highly popular Wintertainer™ who appears in RV parks and Winter Texan resorts throughout the See RED HAT FESTVIAL pg. 40

Brownsville’s Charro Days kicks off Sunday Born to lift community spirits during difficult times, the Charro Days Fiesta arrives in 2018 celebrating its 81st anniversary with a goal dedicated to bi-national friendship and respect for traditions that first captivated Brownsville more than eight decades ago. Charro Days this year will be held Feb. 18-25 in Brownsville. In 1937, during the Great Depression, local business leaders searched for an antidote to the gloom that engulfed Brownsville and the rest of the country. One year later, the community came together for the very first Charro Days to celebrate what made Brownsville unique: Its location on the border with Mexico and the rich cultural heritage enjoyed by Brownsville’s residents. From the very first celebration, Brownsville residents and visitors dressed in the traditional costumes of Mexico and honored the Mexican cowboys – the Charros – who were heroes of the borderlands. Horse-drawn, hand-made floats processed through downtown Brownsville in those early years, with marching bands from Mexico, soldiers from old Fort Brown and children from area schools dressed as charros and chinas. Elegant costume balls, popular street parties and fireworks – all launched with a joyful yell, the traditional “Grito” – were popular back then and contribute to lively Charro Days celebrations today. Charro Days kicks off with the official street dance on Sunday, Feb. 18 beginning
at noon starting at 455 E. Elizabeth St. in Brownsville. The day will include a children’s costume contest at 2 p.m., the official Grito at the bandstand at 3 p.m. and a flour tortilla eating contest at 4:15. Four parades are scattered throughout the festive week with the Brownsville Independent Children’s Charro Days Parade on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 2:30 p.m., the Illuminated Night Parade on Friday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. and the Grand International Parade on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. All parades go down Elizabeth St. through historic downtown Brownsville. Of course, there will be a large World’s Fair carnival with rides, games, food and entertainment throughout the entire event. There are also two dances including the Noche Mexicana featuring Noe Pro and the Band, Folkloric Dancers, Mariachi 7 Lenguas and food. The event is held from 6-11 p.m. at the Jacob Brown Auditorium, 600 International Boulevard, Brownsville. The Charro Days Fiesta Costume Ball featuring two-time Granny Winner Michael Salgado will take place from 8 p.m. to midnight, also at the Jacob Brow Auditorium, on Saturday, Feb. 24. Tickets for either dance are $30. Tickets are required at the door and can be purchased at Charro Days headquarters, located at 455 E. Elizabeth St., Brownsville. Call (956) 542-4245 for more information and visit https:// brownsville.org/events/festivals/charro-days/ for a complete schedule.

Palmview High School presents Mariachi and Folklorico concerts
The Herencia Hispana (Hispanic Heritage) performances by the Palmview High School Mariachi Los Lobos Y Grupo Folklórico Ozomatli will give the audience a true taste of Mexico as they showcase the magic and diversity of Hispanic culture. The group will present their spring concert “Herencia Hispana” at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17 and Sunday, Feb. 18 at the Alejandro “Alex” H. Saenz Performing Arts Center. Audience members will be delighted by the colorful and flamboyant costumes and beautiful instrumentation and vocals. The shows are especially popular among Winter Texans, who keep coming back to La Joya ISD’s performances year after year. “I was here a few years ago, and those kids are amazing,” said Frank Sokol, of
Ontario, Canada “I’ve never seen anything like that in my life.” Both the mariachi and folklórico groups have been invited to represent Texas at the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington D.C. in May. The mariachi has recently been selected as a finalist for the Texas Association of Mariachi Educators and UIL State Mariachi Contest by receiving a Superior Division 1 rating. The groups were also named 6A State Champions in 2011 and 2015 and performed for President Barack Obama’s Presidential Inauguration Parade. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased at the Fine Arts Office, located at 604 Coyote Drive, Monday-Friday, from 9 a.m.noon and 1 p.m.-4 p.m., or at the door, the day of the event. Swing those ladies round and round! Square dancing is a great way to get both mental and physical exercise. Not only do you move around, you have to know what the calls mean.
‘Square dancing is friendliness set to music’
When the Winter Texan Times dropped in on a square dancing session with Joe Saltel at Tropic Star, the room was filled with happy people enjoying dancing to the calls Joe was giving. The dancers moved to calls like “gentlemen trade, pass through, chase right, girls trade, wheel and deal, swing through,” and “keep on walking until you are back home.” They moved walked, spun around, switched partners, and made a variety of moves in beautifully synchronized form as Joe gave calls. To learn more about square dancing the Winter Texan Times spoke with Georgine Woodcock of Washington, who was sitting out the dancing. Georgine and her husband Ron, have been coming to the Valley for the past four winters and have enjoyed participating in the dances. Back home in Washington they have participated in square dance for at least 30 years and Ron is known as a cuer (caller) for round dances, which Georgia explained is the ballroom version of square dancing. She explained there are two basic types of calls. The first is the patter tip call where the caller calls the moves off the top of his head with the object of moving the people around their square and then getting them back to their partners. The second is a sing call, which Joe was demonstrating with, “I’m Walkin’ in Sunshine,” where he sang a few lines of the song and then gave dance commands
in between the words of the song. Georgine explained many of the calls originated in French, and commands like “do-si-do” and “allemande” dated back to square dance’s French heritage. Several types of square dances and lessons are offered in the Rio Grande Valley during the winter season. They include Basic 51, which are the basic moves in square dancing. Main Stream adds 17 additional, slightly more complicated maneuvers. A-1 and A-2 include all the previously learned moves and a few more. The highest levels are Challenges I, II and III that use everything learned so far plus still other moves. “There is a level that is right for everyone somewhere in the Valley,” said Georgine. There are square dance lessons from Harlingen to Mission people can join. Lessons and dances are usually $5 per person. During the day dress is casual but night dances are usually in square dance attire. When asked about rumors that square dance is dying out, Georgine admitted there were fewer calls today than in years past. But she said the groups in the Rio Grande Valley are very active and there are other areas where it is was still very strong, especially in the Midwest. Several years ago, the desire to hold square dances and have a place to dance was so strong back in Spokane, the dancers built their own hall call Lac-a-Do Hall See SQUARE DANCING pg. 31

Alamo Museum readies new Madonna Collection The City of Alamo Museum has just opened a new exhibit this week featuring a collection of Madonna and Madonna and Child figurines. The exhibit opened Feb. 14 and a reception to mark the opening of the exhibit is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 16 at the museum. The collection, on permanent loan, opened at the start of the Lenten season, Ash Wednesday. It is also Valentine’s Day, which museum Curator Alejandro Oyoque sees as quite appropriate because of the love there was between Madonna and child. The exhibit will be on display until after Easter weekend. The Madonna figurines come from Audry Stewart, a Winter Texan from Woodward, Oklahoma living in Alamo. She has collected them for more than 45 years. She started after seeing the collection of an elderly Episcopal Church mentor while a student at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Oklahoma. Her fledgling start was made more special when she received a Madonna figurine from the estate of her late mentor friend at her death. When the Episcopal church in Alva closed she was allowed to keep a Madonna from the church. Stewart said she finds the Madonnas “a significant spiritual experience.” To her
“they represent so much more than just an object.” In the places she lived and during her travels she would specifically look for Madonnas, not so much at garage sales, but often in shops and antique stores. Friends have also given her figurines, including one from the Holy Land carved from olive wood. She has another from Mexico City as well as others from each of seven European countries she visited during a 17-day trip in 1986. When she went to Germany in 2008 to work two years for the U.S. Army, it was another opportunity to visit nearby cities on weekends and to see the beautiful churches with their Madonna and Child figurines. She often found a Madonna or two in the town’s stores. She also found a husband in Germany, her former 5th grade playmate from Woodward, who was working for the Army as an educational counselor. She said they were married in Denmark and honeymooned in Sweden. Her husband, Gale, also became a supporter of her hobby. She has Madonnas from the Vatican store in Rome, Italy, from St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice, Italy and later more during a visit to France in 2016. Perhaps the most intriguing Madonna was the one she saw through the keyhole
of a tiny locked church in Herriberi, Germany. The church was built in the Middle Ages during one of the black plague outbreaks for those forced to live outside the walls of the town in an attempt to avoid further spread of the disease. Usually each room in the Stewart home has had a Madonna on display, with the rest in storage since 2008. But late this last fall she unpacked them to loan the entire collection of more than 100 to the Woodward museum for a month-long exhibit. In taking them out of storage, Stewart said it was like “meeting old friends.” After the Woodward exhibit closed, Stewart packed them up and brought almost all of them to the Alamo Museum. She was prompted to choose Alamo after having seen the Angel Galleria that is on permanent display here. She especially wants the children to see the Madonna figurines and she believes that museum visitors will come to love them too. “I plan to continue collecting those figurines that may need a home, and I will always think of the Alamo Museum,” she concluded. Museum hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until noon and 1 to 4 p.m. For more information call 956-9614398.The museum is located at 130 S. 8th Street, Alamo.

When I first walked through the entrance to The Griffin Grill, I was quite pleasantly surprised at the nice décor and atmosphere of this small, but not too small restaurant. Very nice! Clean as a whistle too.
My next pleasant surprise was the menu. Such a wide selection that you just don’t see at the chain restaurants anymore. Texas Nachos, ceviche, guacamole and shrimp cocktail are just a few of their appetizers. Then there are the steaks, fish and chicken entrees. In the mood for something else? They also offer several burger choices, Paninis, sandwiches, pasta dishes, salads and soups. Of course, in South Texas they definitely offer Mexican food. Save room for dessert because you’ll love their cheesecake (New York, mango or strawberry). They also have wonderful Mexican Flan, tiramisu and Chocolate Lava Cake. I’ve struggled for three days to decide what I’m going to feature from The Griffin Grill. There are just too many
good items to write about. I ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and corn. Delicious. I was intrigued when chef and co-owner Antonio told me that anytime someone orders that, a few minutes later the restaurant can hear the meat being hammered away with a tenderizer in the back – I just had to hear that, and there was no doubt about it; that’s how fresh the plate is. I also realized I had already reviewed a chicken fried chicken before, so out of guilt (and since I was eating alone) I ordered the chipotle chicken pasta and ate it at home for a late dinner. It was amazing – and when it comes to Italian food, I’m kind of a snob since it is my favorite. But that’s wherein lies the problem – after talking with co-owners Rick and Antonio, I want to try other things (well, everything) – like the enchilada suizas, or the Griffin Burger. I also tried the ceviche...and I wanted to try the buffalo shrimp and the... well, you get the picture Every tantalizing taste was fresh and terrific. What’s amaz-

derful dining experience ing about this restaurant – located in the middle of a shopping plaza – is the wide variety of foods. From Italian to burgers to Mexican.... and it’s not just your normal fare of food. The presentation is as amazing as the flavors When the ceviche came out, after just a couple bites it was clear that there was something special, something different about this appetizer. It had a flavor I couldn’t quite put my finger on and when I asked, my suspicions were correct, there was a secret ingredient! Unfortunately,
it remained a secret. That’s how they roll at the Griffin Grill, food with fabulous flavor. The chipotle chicken was creamy and the mushrooms and onions and cheese and pasta were mixed in a way that every flavor stood out. Not one single item overwhelmed the rest. Antonio is an incredible chef who previously owned an Italian restaurant in the Dallas area. Rick has been in the restaurant and hospitality business for many y e a r s . And the two of them
have teamed up to deliver a superb dining experience where customer service and wonderfully prepared and food rise to a level that exceeds expectations – and all at modest menu prices. It’s no wonder that The Griffin Grill has been named one of the area’s best restaurants. Do yourself a favor and plan to enjoy a wonderful meal at a wonderful (modest) price at The Griffin Grill, located at 1906 E. Griffin Parkway in Mission. Now open for dinner. been presented. The program will begin at 2 p.m. Guests are invited to come early before the presentation and enjoy the displays of this year’s quilt show. “Turning of the Quilts” will be presented as part of the awards ceremony at the 12th annual Mission Quilt Show. The awards are sponsored by the Winter Texan Times. Entries for the regular quilt show competition were accepted in three categories: hand-quilted bed quilts, machine-quilted bed quilts, and wall hangings. The show is open to all quilters, both Winter Texans and year-round residents. To allow for the broadest representation, participants were allowed to submit only one item per person. Any quilt entered in this show within the past five years is not eligible for entry this year. The quilts are being judged by a panel of independent judges, with ribbons awarded for first, second and third places in each category. Best-of-Show and Viewers’ Choice ribbons will also be awarded. The show opened Saturday, Feb. 10, and runs through Saturday, March 17. Mission Historical Museum is located at 900 Doherty and the Museum Annex is at 200 E. Tom Landry, adjacent to the main museum building, in Mission. Admission is free. For more information, please call the museum at (956) 580-8646.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES SQUARE DANCING
From pg. 7 on a piece of donated land. Today, the hall is active seven days and week and sometimes twice on Sundays. One reason for the strength of square dancing in the Washington area is a caller who works with seven school districts, teaching square dancing to students. He teaches square dancing to as many as 20,000 students per year. There is a big contest within the school districts to determine who was best at

the end of the year. And there is an international competition called the Pacific Northwest Square Dance Teen Festival, where Washington teens compete with groups on the Canadian side of the border where square dancing is also very popular. As a result of the training in the high schools, not only is square dancing strong among teens but people tend to return to it for recreation in their 30s as they settle down after college and military service and start their families. Georgine said many of the dancers in the room travel and dance all across the United States. Warren Messer, wearing a purple shirt, proclaiming “Life is a Dance” said he was from Iowa but had dances in Texas, Arkansas, Washington, Oklahoma, Illinois and Indiana. In spite of having four heart bypasses and two stents, he is still dancing and credits square dancing for his continued health. Today, square dancing has become an international activity with groups not only in the United States and Canada, but it is also very popular in England, Australia, Germany and Japan. All calls are given in English so no matter where a square dancer travels, they can still understand the calls. Georgine introduced Charles and Debra Howard of Alabama, who she said travel internationally to dance. They danced in Germany in Munich and Berlin a couple of years ago and plan to return to Germany and Austria this fall. “We work with a Lutheran Church

during the summer and often pick our summer jobs in a location where square dancing is available,” said Debra. “We have also danced in places like Bossier City and Shreveport, Louisiana, and in Livingston, Texas during their travels, added Debbie. Georgine explained that many square dancers travel to other parts of the country to dance and also take in the sights of the area. One of the biggest square dance festivals is the Oregon Midwinter Festival in January that attracts 2000 to 3000 people. There is another large dance in Boise, Idaho. Ruth Hoen wants to invite dancers to the upcoming square dance festival in Castlerock, Colorado, just south of Denver. It will be an all plus weekend on September 28-29. The National Square Dance Festival will be held in Kansas City, Missouri, July 19-21. Several people now in the Valley plan to attend that one. At the same time, there will be a Canadian National Festival in London, Ontario. Georgine summed up one reason for square dancing’s popularity is that it is an equalizer. Back home the plumber and the doctor were in the same square. “Your garbage man can be dancing with the lawyer and no one cares,” she said. “It’s a great way to relax and leave the day’s stresses behind, no matter what the profession.” Using Messer’s description, “square dancing is friendliness set to music!”
Joe and Chris Saltel Joe and Chris Saltel have been involved in the square dance program for many years. Joe teaches all levels of square dance from the beginning 51 steps to the most complicated calls.
Georgine and Ron Woodcock Georgine and Ron Woodcock are avid square dancers from Washington. They chose to winter in Texas because of the square-dancing opportunities.

VALLEY STAR AWARDS From pg. 1
Tickets to the Valley Star Awards Show are available at Casa Del Valle or the Winter Texan Times office in Mission; or order by phone at (865) 253-2514. The nominees appearing on this year’s Valley Star Awards ballot were chosen by activity directors at their first meeting of the year. Some people have wondered why Leslie Blasing and Gordy & Debbie are not on the ballot this year. Blasing announced at last year’s awards presentation that she wanted to remove her name from eligibility this year to allow other entertainers an opportunity to receive the award. She was voted Female Vocalist of the year for five straight years, and had also been named Entertainer of the Year previously. Gordy and Debbie agreed. They are six-time winners of the Valley Star Awards Duet Musical Group of the Year. Consequently, a new rule was established whereby those entertainers who receive one of the Valley Star Awards five times will not be eligible for future ballots. “There are so many wonderful entertainers performing in the Rio Grande Valley and we wanted to give some of the newer acts a chance to be recognized,”

Woodcarvers show their craft at annual show
Woodcarving enthusiasts from Winter Texans parks and around the Rio Grande Valley filled up the parking lot at the annual Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers Show Jan. 12 and 13 at the Nomad Shrine Club in Pharr. But after the show ended, the woodcarving excitement didn’t. From Monday, Jan. 15 through Saturday, Jan. 20, the Rally on the Rio also took place at the Shrine Club. More than 20 instructors held classes for all levels of woodcarvers – even
those who hadn’t done any projects but were interested in trying it out. They started each morning at 8 a.m. and concluded each afternoon at 4:30 p.m. “People are welcome to just come in and look around and see what others are doing, said Fred Stenman, president of the RGV Woodcarvers Club. “It’s not very formal and the instructors are here to help. During the weekend Woodcarvers Show, however, the two days belonged to

The most popular carving was by far Santa Claus but there were birds, animals, caricatures, canes and so many more creations. “We want people to come and see the woodcarving shows and to maybe gain an interest in it, Stenman said. “We have everything here anyone needs and if they ever have a question, I don’t know of a woodcarver who wouldn’t share their
knowledge with someone else. The Woodcarvers Club meets at 8 a.m. every Thursday from October through March and Stenman said the public is welcome to come and see what woodcarving is all about, as well as show how many different variations of the hobby there are. Winter Texans are key to Shriners transportation program
Driving about 750 miles round trip about nine times a week adds up to a lot of miles. That total of 90,318 miles in 2016 is what it took for the Shriners transportation program to bring medical help to 698 children up to age 18 from the Rio Grande Valley and northern Mexico. In 2017 the number of children transported is expected to top the 600 mark, virtually all done by volunteers. The Nomad Shrine Club in Pharr coordinates the Valley transportation for each child and one parent or guardian to the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Houston. To carry out one of the largest Shriner transportation programs in the nation requires six 15-passenger vans, according to Richard Russell, assistant director of hospital drivers. Keeping the vans running requires good maintenance since a few of the vans are well past the 200,000-mile mark. About 40 volunteer drivers are needed for the frequent weekday trips, Russell related. More than half the men and women who drive are Winter Texans from all over South Texas; most are drawn from about a dozen parks, where the program is best known. Russell, who is a year-round resident at Wagon City in Mission since 2005, came from Nashville, Tenn., where he was a volunteer driver for two years and then more than 10 years in the Valley, racking up about 125 trips, before taking over duties in the club office on weekday mornings. However, occasionally he will drive a trip if necessary.
Dale McMillan, a Tip-O-Texas RV Resort resident and former transportation director, has been around a good part of the Shrine Club’s 30 plus years of taking kids to the Houston hospitals. He’s made the long haul about 220 times. Most trips begin on the U.S. side of the International Bridge with Reynosa where at either 4 a.m. or 8 a.m. six kids, who have been previously referred and evaluated as likely candidates for help, climb aboard with a parent or guardian for the ride to Houston. If the child is from Mexico, of which 75 percent are, he or she needs a passport and a permanent visa to enter the U.S. The trip includes a stop in Corpus Christi for either breakfast or lunch, depending on whether it is the early or late pickup. The children’s next stop is Shriners Hospital for virtually any pediatric orthopedic condition. For other treatable health conditions, children go on to other area medical facilities, including the Galveston Burn Hospital of the Shriners, of which there are three in the nation. Dental and cleft palate conditions also receive treatment. The children arriving first in the late morning will be seen that afternoon. Those coming late in the afternoon will be seen the next morning. All the children and parents stay overnight in Houston before making the trip back to the “valley.” Shriners Hospitals for Children in Houston have racked up 80 years of caring for children, most of them referred by physicians, school nurses and counselors.
Even parents or anyone who knows of a child with orthopedic needs can make a referral by calling 1-800-237-5055. The call will result in a response from Diane Pachaco, who will arrange to acquire as much medical history for the child as is available. The evaluations consider a multitude of orthopedic problems children have involving bones, joints or muscles. Genetic conditions, limb deficiencies, like different leg lengths or missing limbs, cerebral palsy, club foot, scoliosis, rickets, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, hip disorders and spina bifida are some of the conditions treated. The Shriners also arrange for outpatient clinics to which children come for evaluation or to have less involved procedures done. Portable X-ray and other medical equipment are brought for doctors and nurses to use for the major three-day clinics. One is scheduled for March 7-9 at the La Feria Shrine Club. A one-day clinic is slated Jan. 24, also in La Feria that will include some evaluation and prosthetic adjustments for children with equipment problems or to accommodate growth. What makes the effort so worthwhile, according to Russell, is observing the improvement children make over time due to the treatments. He recalled one little girl who was in a full body cast and her mother would bring her across the border pulling her in a little red Radio Flyer coaster wagon. At first the young girl had to be laid on a van seat for the trip to Houston. After a number of trips for treatment over a two to

three-year period, the girl was able to finally shed the cast and was able to walk, Russell said. Most of the funding for the medical services and transportation comes through the Houston Shriners hospitals since most families cannot afford the health care for their child. Only a small number of families have health insurance, Russell said. The local Shriners do a few fundraising drives each year. It takes the form of help from some I-Hop Restaurants and their patrons along with direct solicitations of mainly Winter Texans at the Progreso International Bridge. Others who would like to donate funds to the charitable organization’s transportation program can send funds to the Nomad Shrine Club, 1044 W. Nolana, Pharr, TX 78577, or stop in at the office at that same address between 9 a.m. and noon any weekday. Make checks out to Shriner’s Transportation. Winter Texans and others who would like to help with transportation can find out more by calling the Nolana office at 956787-2628 or simply visit there. A Shriner affiliation is not a requirement, but there is an application form to fill out. Besides a valid driver’s license, those who drive are encouraged to take the AARP defensive driving course. The Shrine Club pays for it. The Shriners like the program that so improves the lives of children, thinking of it as “Love to the Rescue.”

Winter Texan Fiesta draws large crowd
By Kathy Olivarez Mission’s Mega Winter Texan Fiesta drew thousands of winter visitors from all over the Rio Grande Valley on Saturday Feb. 10. This year’s concert was held outside in front of the Mission CEED Building, and Mexican Artisan Market was held next door in the Mission Parks & Recreation building. Emcee Rich Bellert expressed thanks for the beautiful sunny day after a couple of days of cloudy, damp weather. Guests were served complimentary
barbecue sandwiches and chips. The meal and program were provided by the Mission Chamber of Commerce as a “thank you” to Winter Texans who contribute greatly to the Mission economy while they are here each winter season. The pre-show started at 12:30 with a welcome from Bellert and from the Chamber of Commerce. Father Roy Snipes of Our Lady of Guadalupe gave an invocation. The colors were presented by the Mission Fire Department and included the department’s new Thistle and
Drum Bagpipe Band. The Bagpipes are now being used more and more often at funerals of former peace officers and veterans across the Valley. The first entertainer to perform was the Adam Pope Rebel Roots Band. Popular throughout the Midwest, the band has appeared on numerous television shows airing in the Midwest and nationally. Pope performed “Movin’ On,” “That’s All Right” and “Blue Moon over Kentucky,” before moving to Johnny Cash’s, “I Walk the Line.” He ended his performance with
a song he wrote after visiting the 911 Memorial and seeing the two holes in the ground where the twin towers once stood. The song is, “I Ain’t Over It Yet.” David Church, extremely popular for his tributes to Hank Williams, was next to perform, along with his wife Teri Lisa Church. Church is the most requested performer on RFD-TV in the Midwest because he has an authentic Hank Williams sound. He sang favorites like, “Why See FIESTA pg. 37

Don’t You Love Me Like You Used to Do?” and “A Dime At a Time.” His wife, Teri Lisa, sang, “Someone Had to Teach You.” Their segment ended with a tribute Church wrote to veterans, “The Old Red, White & Blue.” Sherwin and Pam Linton took the stage next. The couple has five Country Music Association Award nominations, eight Grammy nominations and they are members of 11 Halls of Fame in different states. The couple along with Dick Mobakken performed a variety of songs including “Get Rhythm,” Singing the Blues,” Auctioneer,” “Hail, Hail Rock & Roll,” and “God Bless America Again.” Southern Anthem featuring the Pausewing Family was next on stage with
www.wttrgv.com Derek, Mikaela and Logan performing a variety of songs, with mom, Wendy. “I’ve Been Cheated,” “That’s All Right, Mama,” If You’re Going to Play in Texas,” and “Orange Blossom Special” were all very popular with the audience, especially when young Logan displayed his magical fiddling talents Little sisters, Miranda, 5 and Emma 3, came on stage to sing, “I Want to be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart.” They drew cheers from the Winter Texan audience. Last on stage was Terry Smith, who debuted his new song, “Ten Miles East of West” for the first time on the stage at the Winter Texan Fiesta, followed by several other numbers. Emcee Rich Bellert also recited cowboy poetry between acts and kept the audience entertained throughout the afternoon’s free concert that he had produced.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES (GAO) PETANQUE
From pg. 1 large balls closest to the jack. A total of 13 points earns a win and two out of three rounds is required to win the game. Winning a game moves a team to the A division, while a loss takes a team to the B division, according to Bob Jayne, a Pleasant Valley resident from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Any loss thereafter eliminates the team from contention. Those in the A division are playing for the gold and silver medals, while the winner of the B division earns the bronze. Jayne has been playing petanque about 13 years, starting when there were only four courts marked off with ropes instead of the boards now in place. “I like the attitude (of players),” he said. “It’s a fun game with some skill and a lot of luck.” He learned the sport from a French Canadian in the park. In addition to the GAO tournament, he normally plays twice a day, in the morning and evening, skipping only Sunday morning for church. On Wednesday afternoons he manages to squeeze in golf with about 50 others from the park. When the GAO tournament incorporated an opening ceremony, the idea of a flaming Olympic torch was added along with the presentation of the U.S. and Canadian flags. Jayne said he got to carry the torch in the ceremony from 2011 until 2014, when it was discontinued. Benoit LeBlanc, from New Bruns-

wick, Canada, is spending his first year at Pleasant Valley, which is the largest park in the Rio Grande Valley for petanque, according to his sister, Louise Richard, from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and in her first winter in the RGV. The two were playing in the tournament with team captain Denis Seucier, of Quebec, Canada. Richard noted this is the first time she has seen her brother since a big family reunion in Canada four years ago. She was enthusiastic about being at the resort, finding it to be a great social outlet, helping her make many new friends. And she loves all the potential activities, many with which she is now involved. For example, she recounted her first park cribbage tourney and won the jackpot. Being bilingual helped her with the 95 percent French-speaking Canadians in the park. She said it also caused her husband, Ernie, to brush up on his French. “I’m coming back here for sure next year,” she said. Le Blanc noted the social aspects too. In addition to petanque, he plays shuffleboard occasionally and helps out sometimes with the park’s burger night. He also worked on a chicken dinner to raise equipment funds for the park’s first respondent teams, of which he is a member. These teams, which have a golf cart with medical equipment, are usually called first when a resident becomes seriously ill. Prior to the arrival of an EMS ambulance, the first respondents are
trained in CPR, defilation, checking oxygen count and sugar levels and taking blood pressure. The respondents, who now number about 50, are on call two days a month, A team will meet the ambulance at the front gate, direct the EMS personnel to the residence and hand them written medical information they have obtained or monitored. Watching the games was Roger Mathieu, a PV park resident for 10 years from Boston, Massachusetts. Mathieu said he and his wife, Denise, had a motor home and traveled quite a bit, seeing much of the country. But now the couple, who have been married 57 years, fly down in early November and usually stay
until mid-April. He had never seen petanque before coming to the RGV. He played in competition eight years but had to give up regular play due to some health issues. Mathieu will still throw the balls sometimes with his wife and his sister, Gloria, as partners. Mathieu said he liked to be active, also playing senior beanbag baseball, cards and karaoke because he likes to sing. Being active has led to meeting nice people. He admits being somewhat competitive, “but most of all, the games and time with friends has meant good times.”
Bob Jayne, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, takes a look at the ribbon medals that go to the top finishers in the GAO petanque tournament.

40 FEBRUARY 15, 2018 RED HAD FESTIVAL
From pg. 1 Valley. Chrastil was voted Male Vocalist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year in last year’s Valley Star Awards. To say the least, the ladies loved him! What happens when 300 ladies, without husbands to restrain them, are in a room with a high-energy performer like Chrastil? Almost anything! Chrastil started his performance taking the ladies back to the years of their youth by singing the songs of the popular performers of the time like Conway Twitty, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. As he performed, ladies began to dance in the back of the room. By the time Chrastil got to Buddy Holly and Billy Ray Cyrus, the dancers had formed a conga line and were weaving through the tables picking up more dancers as they moved. Moving on to performers like Neill Diamond and Tom Jones and performing their dance moves as well, he received shouts of approval from the ladies reliving the days when those singers would make them swoon. I’m not sure if the entire audience was as excited as the rowdy ladies surrounding me, but the ladies were definitely having a good time. When he finally put on his Elvis jacket to do his impersonations of Elvis, the ladies went wild. Part of his act is taking
www.wttrgv.com red scarves and going out into the audience and giving them to a fan. The first fan who received one stroked his face and looked at him in adoration. She was obviously having a great time. Then he moved to one of the rowdier ladies. When he wrapped the scarf around her neck, she grabbed his face and gave him a big “smackaroo” on the lips! This caused one of the ladies in the audience to question whether he had a big bottle of antiseptic mouthwash to use after such performances. “You know those entertainers don’t really know what is coming when they go out and pick a random person out of the audience. They have to take whatever happens!”
