Wintertainers™ to perform at Borderfest 2018 Borderfest is one of the longest-standing events in South Texas and each year celebrates a different country. Borderfest 2018 will celebrate all things Spain from Friday through Sunday, March 2-4 on the grounds of and inside State Farm Arena. Spanish food and music, a bloodless bullfight, the annual parade and the car-

nival are just a glimpse into the activities of the 42nd annual event. For the Winter Texans, not only will there be all things Spain, but there will also be some familiar names performing at the State Farm Pavilion. The midday lineup on Saturday includes Vance Greek at noon, 4 His Glory at 1 p.m., Regan

James at 2 p.m., Greg Jones at 3 p.m. and Curt James at 4 p.m. On Sunday, 14-year-old Kelli Marie opens the midday lineup at noon, followed by Southern Anthem at 1 p.m., The Classic Band at 2 p.m. and Raices See BORDERFEST pg. 29

La Gloria, Texas—This weekend, Feb 24 and 25 is a world-class, bloodless bullfight marathon at Santa Maria Bull Ring in La Gloria. There are some people who would rather fight bulls than play golf. Activity Directors Appreciation Day

By Billie Ferguson When management and activities work as a team it’s a beautiful thing! The activity director has the freedom to be creative and management has less complaints from the residents and the people enjoy their retirement. Sounds so easy, doesn’t it? There are all kinds of activity directors. Some are volunteers because no one else will do the job. Some are paid to do their job or receive free lot rent or other perks. And some serve on committees where a group of people make the decisions. All See APPRECIATION DAY pg. 33

Winter Texan Ambassadors Wanted

If you love coming down to the Rio Grande Valley each winter, you’re invited to become a Winter Texan ambassador. The job is simple: share with your friends all the good times you have in the Valley each winter – away from the snow and ice. In a place where you can play golf almost any winter day. In a place where your MH & RV resort is a community of its own with lots of friends to share in a whole array of fun activities. See AMBASSADORS pg. 33

Valley’s Top Entertainers named at Valley Star Awards Show If the goal of entertainers is to make an audience laugh, cry, ponder or feel emotion and become fully engaged, then the Valley Star Awards achieved its goal in spades. Each year, Winter Texans vote for their favorite entertainers in several categories leading up to the overall Entertainer of the Year. The event is organized by producer Robert Ferguson along with the Winter Texan Times. Performances between award announcements came from Jason Whorlow, Kelli Marie, Dave & Daphne, 4 His Glory, Vance Greek, and Lindley Creek. Whorlow, known as The Piano Man got the crowd’s blood flowing, and was quick to let them know that the more energy they provided, the more he could reciprocate – and he did. VALLEY STAR AWARDS

From pg. 1 Audiences laughed as John Greer of Lindley Creek sang “Little Dipper,” wailing and crying loudly into a red bandana over the loss of his fictitious girlfriend to chewing tobacco. They also stood in honor of veterans and some members shed a few tears during performances from Dave & Daphne and 4 His Glory, who came away with trophies by the end of the night. 4 His Glory was named the Gospel Group of the Year and their barbershop-style a cappela performance kept those in attendance completely focused on their four-part harmonies. Dave & Daphne, however, clearly stole the show. Following the song “Hey Good Looking,” Dave performed “El Cumbanchero,” an instrumental he recently showcased with his uncle Jess McReynolds on the Grand Ole Opry. Daphne followed with an audience favorite “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” and Dave then electrified the audience and other musicians with his blazing fast performance of “Flight of the Bumble Bee” and dueling banjos – by himself - on the banjo. The duet topped all of that with a chilling medley of “I Will Always Love You” and “Always On My Mind” that sent those in attendance to a rousing standing ovation. Finally, the duet took the music to yet another level with a powerful rendition of “The Lord’s Prayer” by Daphne before closing with a medley of “Where The Ea-

www.wttrgv.com gles Fly” and “God Bless America,” an amazing tribute to veterans in attendance. While voting was done prior to the show, their performance would have been strong enough to earn them the Duet Musical Group of the Year right there. However, they returned to stage a few minutes later after it was announced they had won. “We have had the privilege of entertaining in this beautiful Rio Grande Valley for the past six years,” Daphne said.

“We often tell our audiences that we can’t be us without you. It’s truly an honor to receive this award. From the bottom of our hearts – thank you for allowing us to do what we love.” “Congratulations to the winners and nominees for this year’s Valley Star Awards. With an abundance of high quality performers, it’s a real accomplishment just to be nominated for one of these awards. During the 30 years we have been

publishing the Winter Texan Times, we have seen more and more top-notch entertainers coming to the Rio Grande Valley to perform for our Winter Texan friends,” said Jim Brunson, owner and publisher of the Winter Texan Times. “The Valley Star Awards recognizes the best of the best, and Robert and Billie Ferguson always do a fantastic job of lining up a great show featuring some of the most talented performers in the Valley for everyone to enjoy. I know everyone had a great time at this year’s show.” The nominees who appeared on this year’s Valley Star Awards ballot were chosen by activity directors at their first meeting of the year. Some people wondered why Leslie Blasing and Gordy & Debbie were not on the ballot this year. Blasing announced at last year’s awards presentation that she wanted to remove her name from eligibility this year to allow other entertainers an opportunity to receive the award. She was voted Female Vocalist of the year for five straight years, and had also been named Entertainer of the Year. Gordy and Debbie agreed. They were six-time winners of the Valley Star Awards Duet Musical Group of the Year. Consequently, a new rule was established whereby those entertainers who receive one of the Valley Star Awards five times will not be eligible for future ballots. Gordy and Debbie, however, received a lifetime achievement award for their See VALLEY STAR AWARDS pg. 3

From pg. 2 longstanding success and popularity in the Valley. Bill Chrastil was named Male Vocalist of the Year as well as Entertainer of the Year for the second straight year. Chrastil, whose Valley schedule is completed for 2018, was on his way to Florida to visit his daughter and to perform a few shows when he received word. “That’s just so awesome and I am thankful for the Winter Texans taking their time to go out and vote,” said Chrastil, who performs an Elvis tribute but also imitates the voices of world class singers such as Roy Orbison, Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and others (including Elmer Fudd – see related story). “Ever since my wife and I came to the Valley, people have been so nice and we have made many friends there. We can’t wait every year to come back. The McAllen Nikki Rowe High School group Razz Ma Tazz won Musical Group of the Year (not related). The Cruisers were named best Rock N Roll Band of the Year. Female Vocalist of the Year was Maggie May. Gomer & Patsy won the Novelty or Comedy Act of the Year The Individual/Small Band/Variety Act of the Year went to Helen Russell & Co. Southern Anthem was named the Family Musical Group of the Year and Regan James & Hired Hand was named Country Western Band of the Year.

Chrastil notches Entertainer of the Year award again Imagine Bill Chrastil stepping on a stage, dressed to the nines in his Elvis regalia as he bursts out in song – not with a song from The King, but from The Boss called “Fire.” But it’s not Elvis’ voice. It’s not Bruce Springsteen’s either. It’s Elmer Fudd. Undeniably the voice of one of the most famous Looney Tunes characters, the bald-headed hunter and enemy of Bugs Bunny, whose aim is to hunt Bugs and who speaks in an unusual way, replacing his Rs and Ls with Ws. “I have no idea where that voice came from,” Chrastil said. “It just happened.” But that part of a Chrastil show is just a morsel of what the performer brings to his audience. Other voices include Elvis, Tom Jones, Neil Diamond, Conway Twitty, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly. It’s that variety of voices along with his high-energy performance that earned him his third straight Male Vocalist of the Year Award and second consecutive Entertainer of the Year Award at the annual Valley Star Awards on Saturday at Casa del Valle RV Park in Alamo.

“That’s just a thrill,” Chrastil said. “I appreciate the Winter Texans who enjoy my singing and my show. Regardless of the award I want to thank them for all the special moments and the way they have treated me and my wife, and for coming to the shows and voting for me.” Chrastil has been performing full time since 1983 and began his Elvis tributes since he was 16. He has been honored with numerous awards in Branson, Mo., including Best Gospel CD of the Year, Best Vocal Impressionist of the Year and Best Horizon Show of the Year. Chrastil has been inducted into the Nebraska and South Dakota Country Music Hall of Fame and is a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association. A resident of Lincoln, Neb., Chrastil said his show has evolved over the years and continues to evolve, even 34 years after starting full time. “It keeps me fresh and, honestly, helps make every show feel like a brand new show,” he said. “Finding different voices, improving on the guitar and the piano have provided me with a variety of options to change up my show and give it a

fresh feel. I do it for myself as much as I do for the audience – to give them something new and fresh.” Some of the voices he hears just come natural, like to those who play instruments without reading music but by “playing by ear.” Some, however, have even surprised Chrastil in their development. “I was really surprised I could to Willie,” he said. “I never sat down to do Willie. I was just singing along one day to My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys and it just came, it evolved.” Chrastil said he also works out five days a week to remain in shape for his high-energy performances. Swinging those hips like Elvis can wear down anyone. Chrastil will spend about a month in Florida with his daughter and perform a few shows then he and his wife will return to Nebraska, performing at casinos, fairs, festivals and other shows throughout the summer and fall. “Then we’ll be back in the Valley,” he said. “We are just so blessed to have made so many friends there. We always can’t wait to return.”

La Joya High School’s mariachi and folklorico to perform

La Joya High School’s Mariachi Los Coyotes y Grupo Folklórico Tabasco will present their Spring 2018 concert “Orgullo y Tradición” at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 4. Performances will be held at the Alejandro “Alex” H. Saenz Performing Arts Center, located at 604 Coyote Dr. in La Joya. “Orgullo y Tradición” translates to “Pride & Tradition,” and Mariachi Los Coyotes y Grupo Folklorico Tabasco have much earned that mantra. As the longest running mariachi and folklórico high school groups in the nation, they have an extensive resumé that dates back to 1982. The program was first born as a means to increase student attendance and lower dropout rates, but now, the program is a big part of La Joya’s traditions. The groups have performed for dignitaries such as Gov. Ann Richards, Gov. Mark White, President George Bush, Sr., President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore. They have also performed in Niece, France, at the French Quarter Festival in New Orleans, and, at the White House. This year, they will also perform at Fiesta San Antonio 2018.

Mariachi Los Coyotes is ranked amongst the top 5 in the State of Texas, and consistently earn Superior ratings at UIL (University Interscholastic League) competitions Grupo Folklórico Tabasco was crowned the Grand Champion at the Competencia Folklórica de Tejas 2017, in Corpus Christi, Texas. This year, in addition to the Mariachi/ Folklórico performances, organizers have planned a “Feria Artesanal,” and pre-show entertainment that includes performances by Conjunto Los Diamantes, “The Gentlemen,” and Folklórico groups from Dr. Saenz Middle School, Lorenzo de Zavala Middle School, and Cesar Chavez Middle School. Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Office, next to the Alejandro “Alex” H. Saenz Performing Arts Center at La Joya High School, 604 Coyote Drive, in La Joya,. Where good times If you haven’t experienced the Tilted Kilt, then you are missing out! Located on the south side of Expressway 83 just West of Ware Rd. in McAllen, this Celtic-themed restaurant offers a total sensory experience. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted by one of their beautiful and friendly Kilt Girls and ushered to a comfortable table. Surrounded by a warm pub-like atmosphere you also have a 360° view of multiple HD television screens streaming all the sports action you can handle. From classic pub fare to gourmet burgers, the menu is sure to contain something for everyone in your group. And if you are thirsty, have no fear! The Tilted Kilt offers a selection of more than thirty draft and bottle beers, as well as an extensive spirit selection. Their “Hoppy Hour” runs daily from 3-7 p.m. and then again from 9 p.m.- close and offers a selection of delicious appetizers. From their burger selection, the CLASSIC “BIG ARSE”® HAMBURGER is sure to appeal to all. You have your choice of cheese, number of patties or to make it a bit more healthy, you can have a Turkey or Spicy Black Bean patty! Their PUB CAESAR SALAD comes full of flavor as one would expect and for a bit extra you can add grilled chicken. When it comes to pub fare we suggest the OLDE DUBLIN IRISH STEW! Any time of year the tender beef pot roast, mixed with vegetables and a rich and hearty Guinness® beef stock served with a side of garlic bread is a delicious choice! If you like sandwiches we suggest THE ‘KILT® CLUB, or if you are in the mood for something different, try their CREAMY PUB PASTA! If you have a sweet tooth, their TILTED GUILT will complete any meal. Get into the Tilted Kilt, where they are eager to put a smile on your face and an ice cold beer in your hand. All across America, everyone agrees that “A Cold Beer Never Looked So Good.”®

Residents of Mobile Gardens celebrate the return of their park queen Augusta Freiboth after the grand march around the ballroom Gloria and Joe Smith of Wagon Norm and Louise Fowler of Split Steven and Anne Howell of at the annual Cabaret Ball at MisCity Rail RV Park Green Gate Grove sion Bell RV Resort.

Norm and Louise Fowler, king and queen of Split Rail RV Park, enjoy a dance together prior to the introductions of the Kings and Queens at the annual Cabaret Ball at Mission Bell RV Resort.

Kings, queens crowned at annual Cabaret Ball

Gloria Smith knew she had a prince from the first time she met her future husband, Joe Smith, in high school. Now, she can say she has a king. The Smiths were one pair of 14 kings and queens recognized at Mission Bell Resort for the annual Cabaret Ball. Winter Texan parks that are members of the Winter Texan Activities Association elect a king and queen to represent them at the ball where they are honored and presented in a grand march around the ballroom, dressed in their royal regalia.

“Parks will vote on who they want to honor as the king and queen,” said Sharon Northedge, president of the WTAA. “Usually it’s people who have been in the park for a long time and benefit the park by doing volunteer work and other things to promote and make the park better.” Gloria and Joe Smith, who reside at Wagon City South in Mission, met in high school. Their senior class was made up of 28 students. “There were only 800 people in our town (Milltown, Wisc.),” Joe said. “Everybody knew everybody.” He was a

He entered the Navy in 1945 and got out in late 1946. “I had two older brothers who were in the Army and they kept writing home and telling mom to tell me to enter the Navy,” Joe said. “They wrote ‘if he’s floating, he’ll have three meals a day and a bed instead of rations and mud.’ It’s the best advice they ever gave me. Unfortunately, Gloria’s pool team lost that night – better luck next time.” The WTAA has been in existence for 30 years with the purpose of promoting friendly recreational competition within and between various RV parks. Originally starting with three parks, the membership now has more than 30 parks. Each park had several residents in attendance. Several parks made signs congratulating their king and queen and all hollered and cheered as their park’s royalty were announced and escorted onto the royal court’s ballroom floor. One of the loudest groups came from Split Rail RV Park, cheering on Norm and Louise Fowler. The Fowlers, from Haliburt, Ontario, Canada, have lived at Split Rail RV Park for the past four years and recently helped organize the park’s 40th anniversary celebration. The couple, who first met on Feb. 18, 1959, have lived in the Valley for the past 10 years and at Split Rail for the past four. “This is such an honor for us,” Louise said of the coronation. “We’ve been welcomed at Split Rail since day one.” The couple stays busy, always looking to bring a smile to someone’s face. During Christmas they will dress up as Santa and Mrs. Claus and go entertain students at

The couple has traveled all over the world, including four continents. Emma Knicker passes the Bonham’s Bears torch

Emma Knicker, the “Mama Bear” of Bonham’s Bears, affectionately remembers the original Mama Bear, Emma Montgomery. Montgomery was the founder and leader of Bonham’s Bears, a charitable organization that makes Teddy bears to comfort children in crises. “I remember her telling a story about the first bears she made,” Knicker said. “She said it was the most sorry looking bear she ever saw.” Today, however, Knicker is known as Mama Bear, and has been part of Bonham Bears for the past 24 years, the past 18 years as president. This is Knicker’s final year at the helm and Rachel Carter will be taking her place next year to continue the tradition. Over those years, Bonham’s Bears have grown – in size and expertise. The organization, which began in 1989 and turned into a 501 (c)(3) in 1994, held their annual Teddy Bear Giveaway on Dec. 15, donating dozens of hand-made, stuffed bears to first responders and Texas agencies who will pass on the bears – filled with stuffing and love – to children with the hopes it will soften their pain and bring comfort to their lives. “It just makes us so happy when the firefighters or the Ronald McDonald House people, or whoever, comes and tells us the stories of children that they

give the bears to. It really makes us all feel good.” Bonham’s Bears is made up of Winter Texans from five different parks in the Rio Grande Valley, but is headquartered at Green Bay South. “All members of Bonham’s Bears Inc. are volunteers,” wrote Maple Frye, secretary of the group. “While most of the volunteers are from Green Bay South, we have volunteers from other parks, including El Ranchito, Rio Valley Estates, Sun Valley Acres, and Sunwest MH Park. The volunteers make the Teddy with care by tracing, cutting, and assembling different color fabrics, attaching eyes and noses, machine sewing, stuffing, closing with hand stitches, and tying handmade bibs around the Teddy bears. “The Teddy bears are unique, and made to be child-safe and lovable,” said Knicker.

Couples renew vows at Fun-N-Sun Resort

Valentine’s Day wasn’t necessarily just on Feb. 14 this year – at least not at FunN-Sun Resort in San Benito. The park hosted its 12th annual Wedding Vows Renewal Ceremony. More than 20 couples in attendance celebrated their 50th (or more) anniversary, thus collectively renewing more than 1,000 years of marriage. Now that’s worth celebrating. The park has hosted more than 150 couples during the 12 years, since Fun-N-Sun resident Edna Johnson started spearheading the event. One couple who have resided at the park for 25 years celebrated 71 years of marriage.

“Fun-N-Sun offers so many activities and events throughout the year that are specifically suited for a variety of residents,” said Johnson, organizer of the event. “Each one brings our community together and lets us get to know our neighbors, but the wedding vow renewal event is special to me, it’s my baby.” Following the renewal ceremony, participants, guests and friends of the community were offered wedding cake and continued the celebration. “Seeing these couples who have been together for so long and celebrating their love, just warms my heart,” Johnson said.

W&I to retire flags, honor veterans with quilts

Military veterans will be honored at a ceremony Saturday, Feb. 24, at W&I Resort, 206 South Stewart Rd, in Mission. Each veteran will be given a handmade quilt, made by the ladies of the park. The event begins at 1 p.m. with a flag retirement ceremony where nearly 100 flags will be respectfully cremated. Many of these flags have flown over the park until they have become torn or shabby. “The goal is awareness,” said Gary Davidson, organizer of the annual event. “Honoring the flag is a way to honor those who have died for it, and those who have served.” Davidson started the flag retirement event three years ago. “Some people don’t know what to do with old flags, he said. “This ceremony provides a place for people to take their flags for proper disposal instead of burning or burying them. VFWs and American Legions usually provide a similar resource. After the flag-burning ceremony, participants will process to the clubhouse for the quilt presentation. This year, 33 Vietnam War veterans will be honored for their valor and for their sacrifice. The idea to use quilts to honor vets is not new, nor is it unique to W&I Resort. A national movement called Quilts of Valor presents quilts to thousands of military veterans and active military personnel every year. Sandy Carstenson, who spearheads the project at W&I, was a part of that movement for many years. She is joined by both accomplished quilters and beginning sewers. They meet regularly during the Winter Texan season to cut and sew the quilt tops, then send the completed quilt tops to a local machine quilter. The completed quilts are then bound around the edges and hand stitched with a

label that reads, “With Respect and Honor. Thank You for Your Service.” The ladies, in many cases, are-or were-married to men who served, so they know firsthand about the sacrifices that were made. The quilt presentations began at W&I in 2016. The decision was made to begin with the World War II vets. Only six park residents were veterans of that war, and one quilt had to be awarded posthumously. The next year the 15 veterans of the Korean War were given quilts. Obviously, among the age group in the park, the Vietnam vets constitute the largest group, roughly 50 men, and several women, served during that era. The quilters will make additional quilts for those who did not receive a quilt this year. The public is invited to join W&I residents for the ceremony and for cake and coffee afterwards.

are important. Activities isn’t just something to keep the “old people quiet”, it’s the lifeblood of the park. It can be the difference between your park barely surviving or your park thriving and growing. If you have a good activity director, do everything you can to keep them. Let them know they are appreciated. If you don’t have a good activity director, get one! Work with them and watch your park grow and improve. Healthy, growing 55+ parks are the lifeblood of this Valley. Let’s make them stronger by working together, not just seeing what the bottom line for this month gives us. Look at the big picture! Retirees come south to enjoy their retirement. Let’s do everything we can to make them happy and keep them happy and then we will all be winners. One last idea: Let’s make March 1

each year Activity Directors Appreciation Day. Show your activity director or activities committee how much you appreciate their hard work during the Winter Texan season. They’ve spent a lot of time creating ways for you to enjoy your retirement more. Appreciation will keep them coming back year after year and will make our parks stronger and healthier.

You’ll want to tell your friends about the dances in your park, the jam session, craft sales, pancake breakfasts, ice cream socials and the great entertainers performing daily in the resorts. If you like country music, there’s a jam for you and a whole bunch of great bands performing at country-western dances. If your preference is rock-n-roll or bluegrass, you’re not disappointed. There are so many great performers here in the Rio Grande Valley coming from Branson, Nashville and other locales during their winter “off season.” Be sure to tell your friends about the low, low cost of living in the Rio Grande Valley! Not only do you save a ton of money on heating fuel to keep you warm in the winter, but everything costs less money than in most other areas of the country. It’s a great place to make your retirement dollars stretch further, enabling you to enjoy a great lifestyle with all your new friends in Deep South Texas.

Don’t forget to tell them it’s SAFE here. We all know there has been a lot of bad press about what’s happening in Mexico, but the Rio Grande Valley cities have some of the lowest crime rates in the country. The Winter Texan Times will be publishing our second annual “Take Home Edition” of the paper on March 15 for you to take home with you so you can show your friends up north all the fun times we have here in the Rio Grande Valley. If you can help us spread the word, give us a call today and tell us how many papers you would like to take back north with you to share with others. Most people take 10 to 20 extra copies of the Take Home Edition to share with their friends. We hope you will do the same and invite your friends to come down with you next winter and give us a try. Give us a call and we will put you on our list of Winter Texan Ambassadors and make arrangements for you to get the papers you need. If you are leaving before March 15, take some extra copies of our earlier editions, including today’s paper.
