The Senior Texan Softball League, made up primarily of Winter Texans, but is also open to locals, has two mottos. The first is “Life is a Game – Softball is Serious.” The second is “You don’t quit playing when you grow old. You grow old when you quit playing.” Competition is something that these men and women have never gotten out of their bloodstream. That competitive nature and talent will be on display Thursday, March 8 during the United States – Canada Day at the Westside Softball See SOFTBALL pg. 9

Each winter season, Fred Renk, the owner of the bullring in La Gloria, brings in some of the most skillful matadors to perform the bloodless bullfights for Winter Texan fans. By Herb Moering An experience from some 15 years ago finally bore wings in 2016 and is celebrating Mission’s ever-growing reputation as the Butterfly Capital of the nation. Maxilou Link, president of the Upper Valley Art League (UVAL), related that she went to Mexico to visit the wellknown mountain destination migration site of Monarch butterflies, where they winter at a preserve around the 10,000foot elevation. “I was enthralled in seeing trees that didn’t look like trees because of how they were packed with the butterflies,” she said. “The Monarchs were like a cloud when they left their perches, landing on pathways and on the tourists’ head, shoulders and arms.” Link, a resident of Mission, wanted to do something to beautify the city about eight years ago after recalling her Mexico trip. She began thinking about those

butterflies, realizing how many of the species travel through the Rio Grande Valley during migration periods. Mission is home to the National Butterfly Center, with the location of the center chosen by the North American Butterfly Association because of the wide variety of butterfly species that are either native to or that migrate through the area. The Butterfly Center has recorded more than 200 butterfly species on the 100-acre preserve near the Rio Grande River, some 150 of those species can only be seen in the Lower Rio Grande Valley or by traveling into Mexico. The Lower Rio Grande Valley is host to more than 300 species of butterflies – about 40 percent of the 700 plus butterfly species that are found in the United States. The southernmost tip of Texas, with its subtropical climate is ideal for the migrating butterflies, including See SCULPTURES pg. 33

Bensten Grove Resort takes pickleball to another level

Mike McSpadden hits a backhand while playing on the new heated and airconditioned indoor pickleball courts at Bentsen Grove Resort in Mission.

MISSION - With 130 registered pickleball players and just one indoor court, the folks at Bentsen Grove Resort decided to construct a building to shorten wait times for those who would surround the old court, inside a building known as “the hangar.” The “hangar” court would also double as a tennis court (sometimes also as a volleyball court) and when the residents used it for pickleball, those waiting to play would act as ball boys, chasing down balls and getting them back in play quickly to decrease the amount of time a game took. Now, however, Bentsen Grove residents have the Valley mecca of pickleball courts. A 65-foot by 60-foot, air conditioned and heated building that holds two immaculate pickleball courts reminiscent of the hardcourts that the U.S. Open and Australian Open tennis tournaments are

played on. There is also a set of bleachers, a cylinder on the side of each net for extra pickleballs, signup sheets and a schedule that determines the times specific leagues and skill levels can play, including when there’s open court for anyone to play. Programs include beginners training, beginners play, ladies only play, men only play, intermediate training, intermediate play and competitive play. There are also open play times available to all skill levels. Larry Vermeersch, the park’s pickleball chairman, said that the sport is the fastest-growing sport in North America and has seen the number of players increase at the park. He added that he expects even more players in the coming years. “This is good for recruiting new residents,” he said. “It’s good for every age See PICKLEBALL pg. 34

BorderFest plans wide array of entertainment The United States has a love for parades. There’s the Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Parade of Oranges, the Parade of Roses, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Every town seems to have some type of parade to celebrate an event, a person or a holiday. There’s just a certain excitement regarding the floats and pomp and circumstance. Hidalgo has its share of parades as well, especially this weekend as Borderfest takes place and celebrates Spain. In its 42nd year, South Texas’s largest music, culture and heritage festival “BorderFest.” Each year, the festival has paid homage to a different country, bringing a bit of its culture and history to the Rio Grande Valley. The event displays a culture of people that revel in unique cuisine, language, arts and crafts, musical heritage and entertainment. BorderFest showcases the diversity of cultures in South Texas, highlighting the rich history and vibrant customs of local peoples. Three parades are scheduled for the annual celebration that each year selects a

different country and celebrates its tradition and culture. The Budweiser Grand Parade will take place Saturday, March 3 at 10 a.m. A televised Illuminated parade will take place at 6:30 p.m. with Channel 4 broadcasting the event live. The final parade will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. Of course where there are parades there usually are a whole lot of attractions and this year’s event is not short on attractions. In fact some of the shows will be performing each day. The Welde Bear show performs at 7 p.m. on Friday, and 2:30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The same goes for the White Tiger Experience, the Jurrasic Kingdom Show, the Banana Derby, Inka Wayra Music and one of South Texas’ largest car shows. There will also be bloodless bullfight inside State Farm Arena on Sunday. A special Sunday package is $25 and includes the bullfight and ground events. Visit www.ticketmaster.com for tickets. For more information on the annual festival, visit hidalgoborderfest.com.

Senior Ambassadors, Men of A-Chord, Magic Valley Chorus and RGV Band in concert Friday

Ken Morrison has been in some type of choir since he was a child, growing up in Crooked Creek, Saskatchewan, Canada. He moved to the Rio Grande Valley in 2009 and it didn’t take him long to find something to keep his vocal chords loose and ready to go. He joined the Senior Ambassadors chorale group. He along with the other 37 chorale members will join the Men of A-Chord, the Magic Valley Chorus and the RGV Band for “Music for All Ages” concert at 7 p.m. Friday, March 2 at Center Church, located at 4801 N. Cage in Pharr. Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door and can be purchased through any member of

the four groups or by calling (956) 3775556. “We have tried to increase our fun factor and have a few ‘cute songs,’ a much more diverse repertoire,” Morrison said. “But every group sings or plays songs that are germaine to them. There’s a huge variety of songs and music.” Each year a different group organizes the event, with this year being the Senior Ambassadors running the show. “We have singers from all over the United States and Canada who sing with us,” Morrison said. “I’ve been with the group since 2010 and I’ve been in four of these. It’s a good time with a lot of good music.”

‘Chatterton Country Club’ comedy to be presented at Valley View Estates

Many parks have different types of activities, but few have drama groups that present plays. Valley View Estates in Mission is an exception to that rule. For the past eight to 10 years the Winter Texan subdivision has had a theater group led by George Dicken, a retired drama and journalism teacher from Marion, Indiana with 55 years of experience with school and community plays. The residents present one play a year, always a comedy. This year’s play will be Chatterton Country Club. It will be presented March 2-3 at the park’s recreation hall. “We chose this play,” states Dicken, “because the residential country club inhabited by senior citizens, is very similar to our park.” “All the residents of the Chatterton Country Club talk about each other and get into each other’s business just like they do in a Winter Texan subdivision,” he added. “The way the residents interact is what makes the play funny.” In this case the Women’s Council of the Chatterton Country Club is upset with the scofflaws, the people who are violating the laws of the subdivision,” explained Dicken. “They are determined to do something about the violations. All sorts of situations arise as they attempt to

bring the scofflaws into line with subdivision ordinances.” Those participating in the play include Wayne Carver, Allen Rohne and Marcia Kaps. Other performers include Judy Kreps, Sylvia Bork, Judy Shook, Marilyn Jurrens, Nancy Johnson and Marilyn Witzel. Dicken says the play has three acts. While the actors are changing the scenery, other members of the group who do not have roles in the play will provide entertainment. The first interlude will include a tribute to comic Shelly Berman, who died last year. The second interlude will be a tribute to Patsy Cline where a member of the group will mime one of Cline’s Songs, “I’ve Got Your Picture; She’s Got You,” while providing humorous actions during the song. Another interlude will be a tribute to Abbot and Costello, the famed comedy team of yesteryear. Those performing in the interludes include George Dicken, Diane Bird and Brad Bork. Bork will also do a tribute to his home town. Other participants include Kathy Dahl who is technical director and Loretta Terstig and Carol Blair who are house managers. “We think everyone will enjoy this

comedy because it is so close to what life is like in the parks,” stated Dicken. In the past, we have done similar comedies which as “The Mop Ladies” featuring a group of ladies who clean a building, and “The Pie Ladies,” which was about a social in a church basement. Dicken stressed that everyone who participates is a volunteer. Valley View Estates is a relatively small park but the

residents have a lot of fun with their annual play. Anyone who enjoys comedy performances and wants to join the fun can contact Dicken at 765-998-7886 or simply buy a ticket at the door. Performances are at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5. The play will be presented in the Valley View Estates recreation hall located at 2100 Vernon Avenue, in Mission.

Quilt-A-Bees to hold annual quilt show

The Alamo Rose Quilt-A-Bees will hold their fourth annual quilt show from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, at Alamo Rose Park, located at 938 S. Alamo Road in Alamo. The Quilt-A-Bees will feature their special Friendship Quilt. Each quilter made nine square blocks of their own design and color. They shared these blocks with each other and then were challenged to design their quilt using these nine patch blocks. Along with the Friendship quilts there will be a variety of antique quilts and many other items. There will also be a quilt raffle, a Second Hand Rose table, and quilts for sale

along with other items by vendors. Admission is $2 and there will be an appreciation gift and door prizes.

Sat. Feb. 17th 11am - 3pm For over 26 years, Clayton Homes of Donna has been the #1 Supplier of Winter Texan Mobile Homes in the Rio Grande Valley!

The Riverside Club was built for people to have fun. Consider it mission accomplished. Johnny and Jennifer Hart have owned the club, located right on the border and along the Rio Grande, since 1982. They have watched it transition from being a summer gathering spot with boats all along the river to a Winter Texan hot spot and where Johnny navigates the waters daily on the Riverside Dreamer pontoon boat. For years as well there has been the annual Canada Day celebration, which takes place Tuesday, March 6 at the club, located at 214 E. Chimney Road in Mission. Doors will open at 11 a.m., food will be served from the menu, which includes specialties such as the pork tenderloin sandwich, shrimp basket and super nachos. Jennifer said they will also have another favorite on hand, their delicious pulled-pork sandwich. There will also be door prizes and live music from 1 to 5 p.m. Johnny will also be taking the Dreamer out for onehour boat rides. There is one scheduled for noon and other times may be added. Reservations are needed for the boat ride, which is $10 for seniors. Reservations can be made by calling (956) 581-4477 or (956) 581-1033. The Riverside Club Bar & Grill and Special Event Center has been a gathering place for more than 30 years for locals, tourists, bird watchers and nature lovers who bring their friends, their cameras and their zest for enjoying the good life along the Rio Grande. The club is nestled on the banks of the Rio Grande River and has been the setting for all types of parties and special events. People can relax in air-conditioned comfort in a casual atmosphere or enjoy the fresh air on the shaded waterfront patio while viewing the river and a beautiful sunset. There is a stage

and dance floor that gets pretty packed inside and outside. “We always just want people to have fun here,” Jennifer said. “We had a Heart of Texas concert the other night and everyone was having a great time. There was this one table filled with Canadians and they were laughing and having a great time. One man was especially excited because he had seen the performers on TV before and wanted them to sign his hat. That’s exactly why we build this place.” Jennifer said it seems like there have been more Winter Texans visiting the club, a trend that has been noticed by park managers and other organizations and businesses throughout the Valley. And, similar to other observations, Jennifer said it seems like it’s an influx of newer Winter visitors. “We look forward to the wintertime, when the Winter Texans are here,” she said. “We built this place for people to have a good time and for families to come an enjoy it and in a sense the Winter Texans have become family for us. There are so many locals and Winter Texans that have been coming for years and have supported us all the time. Some have been coming for years and years and have watched as we have built the business and made improvements.” Canada Days haven been traditionally on the first Tuesday every March. In the past there has been a group that comes in and decorates and sets up for the large Canadian crowd. When that group discontinued being in charge, Jennifer and Johnny wanted to keep the tradition going as a way of saying thanks. The first Tuesday of March has stayed as the traditional date ever since. “There will be decorations and games and it’s just a great, fun time every year,” Jennifer said.

Fans watch as softball players from the Senior Softball League play in the annual U.S. - Canada games at Westside Softball Fields in McAllen last year. This year’s games will be played March 8 and the public is invited to come watch one of three scheduled matchups.

SOFTBALL

From pg. 1 Park, located at 1000 S. Ware Road in McAllen. Ed Martens, who coordinates the games, said that the competition may be high, but the emphasis is on having a good time. “Sometimes we’ve had some people who are just a little too competitive,” said Martens, who played baseball most of his life before the transition to softball. “Our goal really is to have a good time and show how much fun it is to be able to play and have the fellowship.” Martens said he’s had to politely let

two players know that they couldn’t play on a certain team – but both were out of safety concerns including a 91-year-old pitcher. “Some of these guys at the plate still crush the ball,” Martens said. “If you don’t have quick enough reflexes, some bad things can happen and we’re not there to have those things happen.” For the first time, the U.S.A. - Canada Day will hold three games, some on a separate field at the park. A U.S.A. team will play a Canada team at 9:30 a.m. A second U.S.A. team will play an All-Texas team at 10 a.m. and at 11 a.m. two teams from the “B” Division will compete. “Our B Divisions teams have a few older players and some ladies,” Martens

said. “They’re the ones who are always saying that they have the most fun.” Fans come dressed in their Canadian or USA gear; others will have flags representing both countries sticking out of their hats or visors. Flags will line the backstop and there will be some friendly jeering back and forth – and applause for a great play or big hit, no matter which team it comes from. Just like going to a semi-pro or minor league game, there will also be some contests for the audience to participate in between innings. “It’s just a day for a lot of fun,” Martens said. All players must be 55 and older and sliding is not permitted. The batter will

start with one ball and one strike when coming to the plate. A foul ball after the second strike will be considered an out. Martens said he’s hoping that the regular league will expand next year. “Our season usually starts around November 1 and runs through the first part of March,” he said. “The Fall season goes from Nov. 1 to Jan. 5 and the winter league begins Jan. 6 and goes through approximately March 8. Everyone is welcome.” For more information on the Senior Softball League, call Martens at (956) 581-2254.

Rio Valley Estates celebrates Roaring 20s

By Mary Lou Benson Rio Valley Estates Senior citizens wintering in South Texas along with some now living in the Rio Grande Valley year-round, staged an event on Feb. 22 to celebrate “The Roaring 20s.” Held at Rio Valley Estates in Weslaco, over 200 fun-loving residents came to the party. Some folks remembered hearing about tills and speak easy bars, so party chairs Kathy and David Cochran and their crazy committee tried to recreate that adventurous time. To get in through the Speak Easy door riddled with bullet holes, you had to know a secret password. There was a guard of sorts at the door who checked for firearms and we heard he might even be into frisking some of the shady ladies who tried to enter. The guard did say the sign that read “Watch out for pickpockets and loose women” had to have the words “loose women” X’d out. Ever popular Fred Goldsbery played for listening and dancing. Thanks to a great kitchen committee, a meal of salad, ham, potatoes and dessert was served before the fun began. The stage backdrop portrayed a brick background with some jazz musicians featured. Residents brought along their own favorite beverages, such as giggle water, moonshine, the bee’s knees, soda pop or beer.

There were contests for best decorated table. Men and women at Rio Valley Estates always seem to go along with whatever the theme is for any party. This one being no exception, there were welldressed men who could have been gangsters in those days, and beautifully attired ladies “Puttin’ on the Ritz” in their flapper of Gatsby dresses. Pick pockets roamed throughout. A cigarette-cigar gal walked through the crowd selling her wares – candy cigarettes and bubble gum cigars! Though none were actually old enough to have lived in the 1920s, many had parents who told of adventures from that era. One lady remembered her mother telling her that her own father was a bootlegger who said, “You had to have a bootlegger ID card in my small town, or you’d try to sell to another bootlegger, there were so many around.” Some of the party’s events may not have really been from the 20s, but they were loads of fun. As Kathy said, “If it was illegal, we did it!” A Rodent Run for the Roses: drew the most attention. The committee had constructed a lighted mouse race track so six live mice could race at a time. Mouse dollars (some claimed they were counterfeit) were used, but that didn’t discourage the gamblers from really getting into the swing of things. They held six races with mice having names such as Mickey, (of course!)

Cat Food, Zippy, Squeaky, Oh Here We Go and Leg Cramps. The winner of each race was then placed on a roulette wheel to determine a winner. It’s a challenge each season to come up

with something new to entertain and surprise the residents at Rio Valley Estates, but you can bet this nutty committee is already working on an event for 2019!

The mayor also purchased two for himself, with Link relating that one of his escaped to the Alton community. His other one is to be installed at the west intersection of Taylor Road and Nolana Avenue. City Manager Martin Garza Jr. has bought three that are still to be installed. A total of seven are up for installation at various public and private sites in the near future. Link said there is more to do as she is working with the Mission Chamber of Commerce and the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission to create a visitor’s map marking the locations of the different butterflies around the city, which would be updated when new sculptures are installed. She also expects to see flyers developed explaining the butterfly program. The lower Rio Grande Valley is host to more than 300 species of butterflies, according to the Butterfly Center here, a project of the non-profit North American Butterfly Association. The center itself has recorded 150 butterfly species that can only be seen in this area or by traveling into Mexico. Actually, about 40 percent of the 700 plus butterfly species that are found in the United States can be seen in the three-county area of Hidalgo, Cameron and Willacy. The southernmost tip of Texas, with its subtropical climate is ideal for the migrating butterflies, including rare types that draw visitors coming to the Rio Grande Valley just to see them. But now, in addition to the butterfly center, there are growing opportunities to see a number of the different butterfly sculptures throughout the city of Mission. Special #1

From pg. 1 rare types that draw butterfly enthusiasts coming to the Rio Grande Valley just to see them. During a sculpture class Link was taking taught by the locally well-known sculptor Douglas Clark, they hatched the idea of creating butterfly sculptures that would beautify the city and also draw attention to the center. But the idea didn’t fly then. Just over two years ago, the cocooned idea re-emerged and Link, with the support of Clark and the UVAL, took a clay-like butterfly replica to Mission Mayor Norberto “Beto” Salinas. He liked what he saw and with the city councilmen in agreement, they had a Queen butterfly sculpture placed in front of city hall. The $1,000 painted sculpture was given a slight modification to extend a leaf outward so it’s possible for an individual to sit next to the butterfly for a photo opp. The installation on April 12, 2016 was supervised by Brad Bentsen, head of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, and Clark along with the Monarch artists Cesar Gonzalez and Yolanda Colin, both of Reynosa. The base of the sculpture is made of fiberglass with intricate details of a branch tree bark and leaf. The body of the Queen Monarch is also fiberglass, from which a chrysalis dangles underneath, suspended by a steel cable. The antennas are made of flexible wire to reduce breaking. The city followed up the city hall sculpture with a purchase of 10 more, slightly smaller butterflies of the Monarch and other species. While Link had gone up and down Conway Avenue looking for good outdoor locations, the city decided upon sites. Most of the locations were the same ones Link had wanted, with Bentsen doing

www.wttrgv.com

all the installations for the city. Of course, the butterflies needed to be painted and Link found a number of student helpers from area schools along with some other people interested in the project. The volunteers used automotive paint to protect against the sun and weather. While the base, leaves and body are all fiberglass, the wings are made of steel. Each of the butterflies are different in style and colors. Link has been inviting individuals, businesses and organizations to sponsor a butterfly, which cost $550 unpainted or $1,000 fully completed and installed. There is a catalogue listing types available, like the Barrel Slasher, Giant Tail Swallow, Fiery Skipper and Tawny Emperor as well as the popular Monarch. To find out more call the Art League office at 956-583-2787. The idea caught on right away with others, starting with Oleander Acres RV Park on South Conway Avenue. The park did its own installation wanting a higher base for its Monarch, according to Link, who with Clark, usually do the installing. Actually Link, who is a spry 93 years old, indicated she is more of a supervisor on the installation projects. “Clark gets the heavy part, but has a lift,” she said. One of the latest was at Fiesta Village RV Park on South Stewart Road, which is painted in the colors of the Texas and American flags. It was one of three installed this past weekend. The other two included Green Gate Grove on South Bentsen Palm Drive and at the intersection of Taylor Road and Nolana Avenue. Dr. Kevin Sparks painted his own sculpture, giving it a distinct coloring, related to the Dallas Cowboys team colors. It is located at the intersection of Tom Landry Drive and Miller Street. The mayor’s office at 500 East Ninth Street, has a Swallowtail butterfly in front.

These bulls are bred for their size, strength and bravery and they fear nothing they encounter.” Renk, who in his younger days was a matador of distinction, loves the art of bullfighting, describing it at a dance in which the matador gracefully maneuvers the bull with nothing more than his red cape. After several series of passes, the matador slowly wears the bull down until he can go in for the symbolic kill by reaching around the dangerous horns of

Unlike the traditional bullfights in Spain, in the bloodless bullfights, the bull is not lanced to weaken the bull and the bull in not killed or harmed in any way. Instead, it is the matador who is in the greatest danger of injury or even death – if he should make the wrong move or underestimate the quick moves of the bull he faces. These bulls will charge at anything that moves, said Renk. And they learn fast and so they can only be fought one time with

Returning home from a round of golf with two of his friends, they saw that their families were bored so they tried to set up a badminton net but couldn’t find a shuttlecock. They improvised with a Wiffle ball, lowered the net and made some improvised “paddles.” It has been fine tuned ever since then.

Vermeesch said he heard about the sport being played at a nearby school back in his hometown. He and his wife checked in on it and have been playing ever since. Renk invites Winter Texans to come out to this grand finale bullfight at Santa Maria – the last fight of the season – on Sunday, March 11. This will be your last chance to see something your friends back home have never before seen. Then you can tell them, “Guess what I did this winter in South Texas?” Come on out and have a good time. The gates open at 1 p.m. and there is food and beverage, music and entertainment until the bullfight starts at 4 p.m. Tickets are still just $30 sunny side, $35 shady side, and $40 for the ringside covered seats. All tickets are by reservation or walk up. Call the bullring at 1-956-481-3300 to make your reservation and pay when you arrive. Checks or cash only, please. There is bus service to and from the bullring by calling Journey Charters & Tours at 1-956-800-5356 or 1-956-3581934.
