RC racing speeding forward
Michelito Lagravere La Gloria, Texas—Santa Maria Bull Ring will present the Grand Finale bloodless bullfight on Sunday, March 11 featuring two famous matadors returning from their European tours. Manolo Martinez, known as the Mexicano De Oro, one of the elite matadors in the Republic of Mexico, will challenge his top competitor Michelito Lagravere, son of the famous French matador Miguel Lagravere. Both performed March 4 See GRAND FINALE pg. 28
Texas Independence Celebration is March 10 in San Benito
Learn about the early days of Texas through historical reenactments at the Texas Independence Celebration that takes place in San Benito March 10 at the San Benito Fair Grounds on FM 510 and Cesar Gonzalez Parkway, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The celebration kicks off on March 10-11 with an IBCA Sanctioned CookOff, where brisket, pork spare ribs, chicken and desserts will be prepared. Judging will take place Saturday afternoon. See SAN BENITO pg. 28
The fans sat in the stands on a beautiful sunny afternoon. The anticipation was growing as the race cars rubbed and raced, sliding along the track at the turns. Suddenly four cars wiped out along one of the wide, sweeping turns. The “big one happened” and the collective gasp could be heard from the race watchers. No, it wasn’t Daytona or Talladega superspeedways, NASCAR tracks that
are as infamous for their racing as they are for their crashes. The “big one” is a moniker used for the two NASCAR superspeedways, where cars have what’s called a restrictor-plate installed for those races for safety as speeds began exceeding 200 miles per hour. What those plates have done, however, is create equality and it’s not rare to see those cars racing at 200 miles per hour five wide down a
frontstretch. Because all the cars are racing tightly, one little miscue can wipe out 10, 15 or more cars, thus the “Big One.” But this was Alamo Palms Mobile Park and the cars were remote control race cars – a hobby that is picking up speed as quick as the feisty autos are on the track. Opened last November, the “facility” is more than a track. The mainstay is an See RC RACING pg. 2
Winter Texans enjoyed BorderFest
by Herb Moering There was something for everyone to flavor at Hidalgo BorderFest 2018. Strolling the grounds at the State Farm Arena there was the Spanish cultural attraction, plenty of entertainment and food delicacies to match the taste of festgoers, whether they were Winter Texans, yearround Valley residents or young people, including kids. For those into the music scene there were a pair of indoor concerts plus five outdoor stages. The stages also included comedy, magic and hypnotism acts. Other options involved a dog and monkey show, a bloodless bullfight, a pair of white Siberian tigers on display, a car show, a Jurassic Kingdom show, plus three parades. A food court fed the hungry and for the kids, and adults too, there were carnival rides. For Paul and Denise Legault, first time visitors to the “Valley”, it was mainly learning about the culture, with BorderFest offering an Hispanic flavor as Spain See BORDERFEST pg. 4

RC RACING
From pg. 1 oval track with a figure eight track in the middle. There’s a booth for the “drivers,” to run their cars from and they have added technology that would make any RC fan excited. Behind those who are controlling the cars there is a television screen that is showing data from sensors around the track. Each driver knows how quick their car has made it around the track and are provided more data that prepares them for competition. “When we created this track, we did it with the intention of being the leader of remote control racing in the Valley,” said Park Director Rocky Ramirez. “This is the future for the new group of Winter Texans. It’s a different demographic coming and this is exciting and low impact and anybody can do it.”
www.wttrgv.com
The park made sure anybody could compete by building handicap accessible ramps to get to the RC control booth. The park also has RC cars and trucks for rent so anybody can give it a try before deciding to invest in the activity. Not only does the racing grounds have the technology with the sensors – and plans to place cameras around the track so they can livestream races – but they also have a “garage” area where car owners can tinker with their vehicles, fixing them or making adjustments. There are also air hoses and water hoses to remove debris that can’t be reached by hand. “We want to continually innovate and give our residents and those who come to race in our park everything that they need,” said Ramirez, who thought he held the track record at 8.6 seconds around the oval until veteran RC driver Tarry Freeman told him about his 7.9-second record
WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com
that now stands. “Wow,” Ramirez said. “I’m gonna have to get that back.” Ramirez said that Encore RV Resorts and Thousand Trails Campgrounds, the park’s parent company, sent out a manual to all of its locations and used Alamo Palms’ blueprint as how to start and maintain a racetrack facility. “That’s a pretty big deal for us,” Ramirez said. “It tells us we are doing it right.” The park was part of a racing series this year with two other parks, Alamo Rec-Veh and Victoria Palms. Ramirez said he wasn’t sure how many more parks would be part of the series in the future, but said several parks had visited Alamo Palms to check out the facility – and of course take their turns on the track. The park has close to 30 RC car owners and Alamo Palms had about 65 competi-
tors during the racing series hosted there. Alamo Palms has more than just the oval racetrack however, they also have a crawler track. A crawler track is similar to an obstacle course. Instead of speed, toughness, strength and durability are used, usually by RC trucks, to climb over rocks, run up ramps with boards and other obstacles set to create barriers and make the course more challenging. “Again, it’s being innovative and making the most out of our racing facility,” Ramirez said. “We also are looking in the near future to remove the figure eight in the middle and use that for tractor/truck pulls and mud races.” Many times, Ramirez said, there are more fans watching the racing than there are running the cars. Maybe they’re all anticipating “the big one.”

BORDERFEST
WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com
From pg. 1 was the country being celebrated this year. The couple, from Quebec, Canada, who are staying at Sleepy Valley Resort in Mission, were found at the replica 1599 Madrid, Spain plaza, known commonly as the Puerta de Alcala, where a play and dancing was taking place. Being the first winter for them has been a myriad of adventures. Paul has found the Mexican culture intriguing and Denise said she has enjoyed the shows, especially the Mariachi music. She was also awed by a visit to the San Juan Basilica. They like the parades and the warm temperatures. Denise said how much she has enjoyed their resort’s activities, noting the organizing by the resort’s Robert Jacque. “Seeing the culture and having good times” is what Nancy Swartz has liked in the 19 years she has come to stay at Southern Comfort in Weslaco. She comes from Pennsylvania and makes it a “girl thing” with two other women to do BorderFest every year. She was also joined by a cousin from Idaho. The atmosphere of the “valley” had an impact on her friend, Donna Longworth, who in her first trip here has plans to buy a place so she can return each winter. Don and Bernice Kellett have been coming to the “Valley” from Manitoba, Canada for 10 years and the majority of those years have come to BorderFest. Don said they always come for the parade on Saturday morning to again experience the rolling throaty roar of the motorcycles before they even see the machines leading the spectacle. The couple, who stay at Southern Comfort in Weslaco, enjoy the music of the stage shows at the festival. Don likes a variety of music that includes country and Tex-Mex. “We see as much as we can (of
the performances).” He noted a lot of the pavilion performers have also entertained at the resort parks and so their music is familiar. As they watched Greg Jones in the State Farm Pavilion, he did an Elvis Presley song and came down into the audience to serenade Bernice as part of the fun. Another couple, Richard and Doris Taylor also came to the pavilion, but primarily to hear Curt James sing. They originally came from Iowa, but now are full time residents living in Elsa. Doris related that between 2006 and 2012 they had a bar in Mission. Most of the clientele who came to Lonesome Dove were Winter Texans. Now they are just flat-out retired, according to Rich. The couple are also bikers and with their Harley they ride with others in the Thunder Horse Hog Club, which is sponsored by the Desperado Harley-Davidson dealership in McAllen. Rich recalled riding in the Saturday morning BorderFest parade with the other bikers, which included a free pass to the event and a few food vouchers. Doris used to have her own bike, but now rides with her husband. Friends of the Taylors at the fest were John and Lois Wardell, who are also motorcyclists. He has been biking for some 65 years, while Lois has been riding 14 years. John said he came to the “valley” from Michigan for the first time in 1992, when he retired. The Wardells, have been full-time for 15 years now, living in Edinburg. One of the best things in the “valley” is being hot, John said. “It keeps me healthy,” he added. Those associated with BorderFest see the little city of Hidalgo showing how a community effort can create a big American celebration with an international flavor that draws from all over the area.

Monarch Festival is March 17 at Quinta Mazatlan
McAllen, TX – It’s time to celebrate and educate once again. Quinta Mazatlan will host the second annual McAllen Monarch Festival on Saturday, March 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The festival will focus on educating the public about monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) through family friendly activities such as arts and crafts, music and dancing, face painting, garden walks, informative speakers and scout activities. The festival will also have food and native plant vendors. Children and adults will learn about the life cycle of these amazing and iconic insects. Monarch butterflies were adopted as the official state insect of Texas in 1995. These butterflies migrate through Texas on their way to Mexico, however, their population has dwindled by more than 80 percent in the last 20 years. This is an incredible loss to the species and can be attributed to the degradation and loss of summer breeding habitat in the United States and wintering habitat in Mexico. “Every citizen in the City of McAllen, and across the Lower Rio Grande Valley, can make a difference starting in their own backyard through smart landscaping techniques and native plant propagation. Help the City of McAllen bring back the monarch butterfly to its once historic
population numbers,” said Coleen Hook, manager of Quinta Mazatlan in McAllen. The festival offers a Nature Speaker Series including “The Magnificant Monarch” at 11 a.m., “Butterflies of the Rio Grande Valley at 12 p.m., “Caterpillar Care” by Barry Knoll at 1 p.m., and “But-
terfly Garden Design for Homes” by Sylvia Barr at 2 p.m. Over 20 vendors will be offering nature and culture items at the festival, including specialty health desserts from the Home Bakers Market, and Lebby Salinas of Fooducator sharing healthy tips.
Come out to the McAllen Monarch Festival at Quinta Mazatlán on Saturday, March 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a day filled with activities, music and games that everyone will enjoy!
There will also be a Native Plant Sale & Chit Chat with and Expert, featuring Mike Heep, of Heep Nursery; James Lovegreen, of L&L Growers; and Betty Perez, of Perez Ranch Nursery. Butterfly Garden Tours will leave every 30 minutes, led by urban ecologist John Brush and botanist Silvia Barr. In addition, the entertainment and program includes: 11:15 a.m. – Bug Parade with children dressed as their favorite insect 11:30, 12, and 12: 30 – Dance of the Butterflies by Deborah Case Dance Academy 1 p.m. – Native American Butterfly Dance by the Bear Clan 1:30 p.m. – Recycled Walking Art Show by UTRGV 2 p.m. – Magician Show by Oscar Muñoz The festival entrance fee is $5 per person (ages 2 and under free) and no advance reservation is required. Quinta Mazatlán is located at 600 Sunset Drive in McAllen, one block south of La Plaza Mall on 10th Street. For more information, contact Quinta Mazatlan at (956) 681-3370 or visit www.quintamazatlan. com.

Schlitterbahn ‘Black and White’ Style Show was glamorous affair
By Kathy Olivarez Black and White was the theme of this year’s Red Hat Style Show, held annually at the Schlitterbahn Resort the last Tuesday in February. Sponsored by the Dazzling Dolphin Red Hat Group from South Padre Island, it is an event open to all Red Hat ladies across the Rio Grande Valley. This year’s event attracted 85 ladies from different Red Hat groups spread from Mission to South Padre Island and

Brownsville. Everyone wore black and white clothing. Styles ranged from elegant dress to casual wear. Some ladies also selected black and white hats, while others chose to wear the traditional red hat. Dazzling Dolphin Shirley Hawkins, known as the hat lady because of her glamour hats, acted as emcee of the event. She introduced musicians, led the raffles of the two quilts, led the discussion to find
the oldest Red Hat Lady there, and introduced each group in the parade. Ladies ranged in age from their 50s to 93-year-old Betty Hardin who resides in Palm to Pine in Weslaco during the winter and Nebraska during the summer. She had two other close competitors, both in their 90s. Two quilts were raffled as part of the fun. One was a blue print with a matching pillow while the other had a Red Hat

The ladies enjoyed a Mexican buffet dinner while David Sellers, husband of one of the ladies, sang and played harmonica. His friend, Doyle Heim, accompanied him on accordion. Victoria Palms Style show features variety of fun outfits
A wide array of fun to wear outfits for many different occasions were modeled at the 21st annual Victoria Palms Style Show on Thursday, Feb. 8. Outfits ranged from casual to formal and included cruise wear, western wear, wedding wear and a variety of other styles for both men and women. During the first half of the show, the women chose casual wear for the hot summer months ahead, including casual shirts – many with three-quarter length bell sleeves that are popular this season. Others chose clothing made of gauze with loose skirts and matching tops or tops over sensation pants in different lengths
from crops to Capris and long slacks with ladder back trim. Others sported leggings with colorful blouses and belts covered with bling. And of course, there was western wear for the upcoming rodeo with a variety of western style shirts with diamond snap buttons, stylish boots, hats, jeans and western style hats. The men modeled the latest in western shirts, slacks, sport coats, jeans, and Stetson hats. The second half of the show was dedicated to more formal clothing. Some women wore slacks with dressy tops suitable for cruise wear while others selected party clothes made of gauze, chiffon or
silk materials suitable for summer outings, such as concerts, theater presentations, showers, weddings and teas. One lady modeled a long tiered floor-length gown in charcoal and ivory, suitable for the grandmother of the bride or perhaps for a second wedding! Many featured the popular three-quarter bell sleeves of the season. Jewelry to accent the outfits, bags suitable or the occasion, some hats, and a variety of sandals, both recreational and dressy, accompanied the outfits. Clothing for the style show was provided by local clothing stores. Models included Josie Murray, Bev-
erly Ford, Marianne Blasco, Nancy Karg and Tracy Smith. Also modeling were Jeff Butcher, Sarah Mackenzie. Kathie Butcher, Dan Baumhofer and Ray Zachow. Norma Powell, Michele Drake, Karen Hermanson, Normalee Teskey and Susie Zillmer also served as models along with Barbara Baker, Janice Hardy, Gail Bosman, Jeanne Beckenback and Rex Kirchhoff. There was a wide variety of clothing modeled with something for everyone’s taste. The merchants also provided coupons for discounts on clothing in their stores to encourage the ladies to purchase of their favorite items.
Becky Malcik, owner of Bec’s Fashions welcomes ladies to the luncheon.

Chili cookoff a hot event at Llano Grande Resort
What determines a great-tasting chili? Heat, flavor, color or a combination of some, all or none of those categories? “You have to have hatch chiles,” Linda Sanders said. “I like meat in my chili,” Kim Hawkins said. “If it’s beans, then it’s a soup.” “Loaded with flavor and creamy, gooey, yummy with just about anything,” added Paula Lake. “And with fresh green
chile peppers on top.” There could be hundreds of varieties of chilis. Which style to make – especially in a chili cookoff like the one held in the Rec Hall by the garden club at Llano Grande Resort , located at 2215 East West Blvd. in Mercedes – is not the simplest of decisions to make. The club held its first chili cookoff at 3 p.m. Monday and there were more than a dozen entries with a full spec-
trum of flavors, colors and heat. There was bean chili, spicy beer chili, Texas chili , red, white and green chili and more. The event was a fundraiser for the newly re-organized garden club to raise money to re-establish the resort’s butterfly garden. Hawkins, one of the organizers of the club and the event, said this was the first year for the garden club and the money will be used to bring in some milkweed and other native plants. A unique aspect of the event was that there was no charge for the entrants and just a moderate tasting fee of $3. The winner would be decided by the tasters – a true people’s choice award. The tasters/ judges did not know who made what chili. There were oyster crackers to cleanse the palette and a variety of desserts to finish off the event. Sanders’ chili was gushing with flavor and chunks of meat. The green hatch chile, one of New Mexico’s finest delicacies, definitely separated that chili from others. In fact, all 12 chilis had their distinct flavors – that’s what happens when the competitors are from all over the country
– even though there was the regional favorite Texas chili among the competitors. Ironically, Sanders hailed from (guess?)... New Mexico. “I also make the Texas red chili but thought I’d go with this because people are probably not use to it,” said Sanders, who along with her husband are in their second year at Llano Grande. “My husband loved it and he is my guide so that’s good.” Paula and Mike Lake have competed in a few chili cookoffs, including at wineries, in Iowa. After the judging is complete, the host will also recommend a bottle of wine that could be paired with each chili. “I would think it would be better paired with beer, but it was a real neat deal,” Mike said. “We decided to introduce the white chili here to South Texas. Trying something different like this is usually hit or miss. We’ll see.” With a complete different taste and appearance - the chicken breast shredded in the white sauce - the white chili was See CHILI COOKOFF pg. 25

CHILI COOKOFF
around and growing. In fact, some were already thinking about next year. “I have a neighbor that does a Texas chili and I think I’ll make that one,” Paula Lake said. “It has kidney beans and jalapenos and thicker chunks of ground beef. I’m gonna get that recipe and bring it.”
From pg. 23 loaded with delectable flavors that many would normally not associate with chili. One taste, however, qualified it as chile, as the distinct white northern beans, green chilies, onion, cumin and cayenne pepper – and some Monterey Jack cheese – made it comparable enough to qualify. Paula had worked in food service and said while she worked at a small college in Iowa she had a chance to try some recipes on very eager – and always hungry – students. “One time I made an omwhich – an omelet in between two slices of toast basically – and the first time I made it, only one tried it. But the second time I think 40 or more tried it. Those kids were great.” None of the chili’s present looked to be insta-chili. Clearly there was a thought-process into what type of chili to bring – red, white or green? Hot, hotter or hottest? Meat or beans... or both? “I started making the beans yesterday,” she said. “The slower you cook it, the more flavor you get out of it and I started the rest at about 7:30 this morning.” Hawkins, the organizer, said she didn’t enter the event since she was organizing it. She added that she hope it was a big enough hit that it would become an annual event. By the looks of the chilis, the contestants and the judges, the event should not have a problem with sticking

Laguna Atascosa in need of volunteers
The Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is looking for volunteers to plant seedlings in order to create more thornscrub forest habitat. The refuge is located at 22688 Buena Vista Road, Los Fresnos and is part of the National Wildlife Refuge System, a national network of lands and waters set aside for the benefit of wildlife and those interested in wildlife. The planting will take place from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 10. Volunteers are asked to bring work gloves, a shovel, sturdy shoes or boots, a water bottle, sunscreen and a hat. Water refills and snacks will be provided. The refuge was established in 1946 to provide habitat for wintering waterfowl and other migratory birds, principally redhead ducks. Today, there is an expanded emphasis that includes endangered species conservation and management for shorebirds. The refuge is a premiere bird-watching destination with more recorded species of birds than any other refuge in the National Wildlife Refuge System. The largest population of ocelots in the United States calls the refuge home, making it the center for conservation and recovery efforts for this endangered cat. Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge encompasses more than 97,000
acres, a portion of which are open to the public for wildlife related activities like wildlife watching, hunting, fishing, photography and environmental education. Most of the planting will be done near the Scum Pond Trail, with some near the Mesquite Trail. The Habitat Restoration Team and a 12-person ACE crew will be leading the effort. Visit www.fws.gov/refuge/Laguna_ Atascosa for updates and the most updated directions. Call Ranger Marion Mason at (956) 748-3607 for more information and for group reservations.

Southern Comfort RV Park hosts Bocce tournaments
WESLACO—The sport of bocce ball isn’t going away anytime soon. In fact, the trend that’s happening at the Encore RV resorts across the Rio Grande Valley might lay claim to the opposite. Southern Comfort RV Park, located at 1501 S Airport Dr. in Weslaco, has been running bocce ball tournaments for the past couple of years. What started as one bocce tournament in the park is now up to three and signs are that the growth is going to continue. “Participation and excitement from Winter Texans is overwhelming,” Terry Hause wrote in an email. “It has become one of the most popular pastimes for the Winter Texans.” Canadian residents Ugo and Linda Cesario have worked continuously around the bocce courts, maintaining and upgrading the park’s four courts. There is open bocce every Friday for Southern Comfort residents from November until the beginning of March. Ugo also has his “famous” hotdogs and beverages available. Not only that, but the Cesarios host a tournament for the park with 32 teams.
They run a full draw and, according to Hause “for the price of admission, the participants and spectators have meals supplied for the entire day.” The park’s management company, Encore, has noticed the revitalization of the sport and included it in the annual Encore games. Southern Comfort is the host park and there are teams from all 10 Valley Encore parks that head to Southern Comfort to participate. Those other RGV Encore parks include Fun-N-Sun RV Resort in San Benito, Alamo Palms RV Resort in Alamo, Country Sunshine RV Resort in Weslaco, Lakewood RV Resort, Paradise Park RV Resort, Sunshine RV Resort and Tropic Winds RV Resort in Harlingen, Paradise South RV Resort in Mercedes, and Victoria Palms RV Resort in Donna. “As a resident of Southern Comfort we are truly blessed to have such a wonderful couple provide such an event that anyone can play and get to meet our neighbors to make lifelong memories,” Hause wrote.

This will be the final bullfight for the Santa Maria Bull Ring’s 18th season. “The competitive spirit between these two is incredible,” said Santa Maria Bull Ring owner Fred Renk. “They are always trying to out do each other, creating this show of complete domination of their opponents, el toro bravo (the brave bull), everytime they perform together. Very seldom are they presented on the same card. It makes for one dynamic show for the fans.” The bulls are huge, Renk said, outweighing many of the bulls faced in Mexican arenas. Unlike Mexican bullfights where the bulls are weakened and slowed by the picador, these bulls are fought by the matadors full strength for the entire performance. “Truly world-class bloodless bullfights,” Renk added. The gates open at the Santa Maria Bull Ring at 1 p.m. and there is always great food, beverages and entertainment prior to the corrida which starts at 4 p.m. sharp. During the meal, the ladies visited with other groups and found out some of the activities they were doing both in the local Red Hat Chapters and their groups back home where they live in the summer. Some groups simply enjoy going out to lunch while other groups enjoy special activities such as pajama parties, new red hat making contests, formal teas or dinners, and shopping trips. Many of the winter groups in the Rio Grande Valley enjoy visiting local favorite spots like Turtle Rehab, Inc. or the dolphin tours on South Padre Island. Other groups choose to have lunch at a nice restaurant and then a movie. Or they opt for museums, nature centers and special tours available in their areas. After the meal, the name of each group represented was called and the ladies paraded around the room showing off their finery. Door prizes were distributed after the style show. At the end of the event, the ladies were told the theme for next year’s Red Hat Style Show is going to be “Lace and Roses.” Hawkins told the ladies they have a full year to come up with a costume with that theme. The event is planned for February 26, 2019, once again at Schlitterbahn at SPI. See you there next year!
Whether watching or being in it, Winter Texans love a parade. The Trophy Gardens RV Resort pirates performed a dance Saturday morning before the Alamo Texas Independence Day Parade judges that helped them earn first place overall.
“Ahoy Alamo” brought out the pirate theme for the Alamo Texas Independence Day Parade. In this instance passing along the route was the pirate ship captained by Father Rene’ Angel from Resurrection Catholic Church in Alamo.
