Climate, friendly people, social activities keep Winter Texans coming back
Art connoisseurs have many reasons for liking a masterpiece. For some, it may be the colors, for others the art may “just speak to them.” Yet, for others there may be another reason something undefinable
– or maybe for all these reasons. The same can be said for connoisseurs of winter travel who trek south annually to make the Rio Grande Valley their home – some for three months, some for
six months or longer. For them, however, the reasons are clearly defined. There are many reasons Winter Texans love to call the Rio Grande Valley their winter home. But the reasons that top the list are: the climate, the friendly people, the activities, entertainment and the low cost of living. It’s the Warm Weather Being cooped up indoors for 4-6 months of the year because icicles are hanging from the rooftop, which is covered with a foot of snow, is not the way many people want to live. When the main activity for the day is shoveling snow, it can be downright depressing. Welcome to the Rio Grande Valley, where the average high between December and February runs from 70-74 degrees and the average low during those months are between 49 and 54 degrees, much higher than the highs for the season in most of the Winter Texans’ northern homes. Winter Texans enjoy coming to the Valley to get away from the cold weather. Many seem to take pleasure in calling family and friends back home when they See RIO GRANDE VALLEY pg. 26
Swing Street Band delights Winter Texans
Karen and Trevor Tripp moved in perfect harmony, seemingly without stress or strain as the Swing Street Band played “In the Mood.” The couple waltzed away as Robert Comeau and his orchestra played an evening of music that covered several decades at Aladdin Villas in Mission. “That’s why we are here, for all the dancing,” said Karen as she and Trevor took a break in between songs. “We’ll go square dancing, club dancing, social dancing – wherever there’s a dance, we’re going to try to be there.” The couple have known each other for 37 years and said they were dancing before they even met. They love following several groups in the Valley such as the Swing Street Band, Texas Wheels, the
Cruisers and Diego. “We like to play songs that are recognizable to the Winter Texans,” said Bob Comeau, director of the Swing Street Band. “When they recognize something from when they were young, they enjoy it and will be more likely to dance and be engaged with the music.” The Swing Street Band incudes music from the likes of Duke Ellington, Bennie Goodman, Harry James, Henry Mancini and more. Some of their songs included “Moonlight Serenade,” “Emily,” “Crazy,” “Unchained Melody,” and “Mambo No. 5,” among others. Penny Alvey came up to Comeau during an intermission to express how See SWING STREET BAND pg. 33

The Valley is perfect for year-round golf Around most of the country, golf takes some time off during the wintertime. When those months reach the Rio Grande Valley, however, golf is in full swing. Golf is a year-round sport in the Rio Grande Valley, and Winter Texans are finding plenty of time to enjoy the links. “I love being able to play golf all year round – that and softball,” said David Clark, from Manitoba, Canada. “It especially beats the alternative – shoveling snow and staying indoors all the time.” With an average high temperature of 79, 71, 70 and 74 in November, December, January and February, Winter Texans can choose from nearly 20 courses in Hidalgo and Cameron counties. As an example, the same month’s average high temperatures in Ames, Iowa are 45, 31, 27 and 34. The record lows for Ames, just so you can see where the temperatures can potentially go, are -7, -24, -26 and -28 for those months. Despite not having the variety in elevation, there are several different types of golf courses, and challenge levels, for golfers to choose from. Three courses, Howling Trails in La Joya, Shary Municipal in Mission and Tony Butler in Harlingen are home to 27 holes, where golfers can play 1-18 or just decide to go out for nine and play the final holes, 19-27. Howling Trails and Shary are mostly flat but their layout and various tee boxes give golfers the option to choose how much of a challenge they would like. The
courses, however, play strategically and keeping the ball up the wide and friendly fairways is the ultimate choice. But don’t be fooled. While driving by the course it may look wide open and simple to play, it has enough holes where you need to hit a “golf shot” instead of just gripping and ripping it. Tony Butler has a few more challenging holes but the course, one of the oldest in the Valley, meanders through the natural South Texas terrain and is extremely easy to walk. The 18-hole course is a championship layout measuring 6,400 yards (par 71) featuring Champions Ultra-Dwarf Bermuda greens. The 9-hole course is a shorter course measuring 2,600 yards (par 35) with newly renovated Emerald Zoysia greens. Winter Texans are enjoying golf at a growing pace in the Rio Grande Valley. “There has been a definite increase, even with some bad weather this year,” said Carlos Espinosa, director of golf for McAllen’s municipal course. “Plus we have had some great compliments on the new greens that we have put in. Golfers see when you invest back into your course, and both the locals and the Winter Texans have noticed that and appreciate it.” Winter Texans may decide they want a little more of a challenge and choose a course like Los Lagos, with its numerous See YEAR-AROUND GOLF pg. 30

SAN BENITO, TEXAS
We welcome you to a corner of paradise in the tip of southern-most Texas and the middle the Rio Grande Valley. We extend warm greetings and rich cultural heritage in a setting where nature is most impressive and our greatest asset: our friendly, civic-minded residents, committed to quality growth and development. San Benito is called Resaca City after the picturesque waterway that ambles through this historic community. Whether you come to fish, hunt, bird watch, swim or spend a tranquil winter in South Texas, we know you are going to enjoy San Benito. San Benito is a great place to live with affordable homes, a low cost of living, beautiful surroundings and friendly people. Two charming cultures merge in San Benito, reflected in the arts and entertainment of the border area. The past year was one of transition in the Resaca City. A Museum Coordinator came onboard to steer the newly constructed $1.6 million Cultural Heritage Museum as the flagship designed to make San Benito truly a Destination
City, with the creation of new and exciting rotating exhibits and attractions. A myriad of music-based festivals were formed to draw visitors to the city including the Resaca City Music Festival, Hog Waddle Country Concert and Sanctioned Cook-Off and Cinco de Mayo Fiesta. They join the established festivals including ResacaFest and several Christmas themed events. San Benito also has a beautiful winding Resaca throughout the community that is drawing eco-tourists. The City is in the third phase of construction of an ecological wetlands project that hosts a wide variety of birds and other wildlife. The region’s subtropical climate, winter visitor facilities, a partnership in the creation of Rails-to-Trails projects, proximity to the Mexican border, and wide open undeveloped land suitable for manufacturing and industry also contribute to San Benito’s desirability as a destination city. Solid growth and development is being realized in the construction of the $23 million AEP Texas Service Center off of Business 77 that features an 88,000-square foot building which will serve as the regional headquarters for the commercial power provider. The impending opening of a new cold storage facility at the Free Trade International Bridge at Los Indios is designed to attract more commercial traffic locally. As a 25 percent owner of the bridge, the city is actively participating in a progressive marketing strategy that will bring additional revenue into the city.
WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com
San Benito’s Parks Department created further depth and dimension over the past year with the addition of a greater variety of recreational sports and civic activities directed toward the young and more mature citizens in the community. The city is creating a new community park on South Sam Houston Blvd., currently dubbed “South Park.” Infrastructure work, including installation of water and sewer lines at a cost of $100,000, has been completed on the designated 12.5 acres of land. Funds were granted by the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation in the form of a $495,000 grant. Completion of the park is forecast this year. This 106-year old city is evolving. We are throwing out old practices and unveiling a new business model,” the city manager said. A destination city must give people a reason to want to come to a community, whether it be for amenities, culture, aesthetics, food or other desires, he said, and San Benito is doing just that.

Mission, Texas:
WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com
We’re just getting better The city of Mission is the home of more Winter Texan mobile home and RV resorts than any other city in the Valley, and Mission is always looking for ways to enhance the quality of life for their winter visitors as well as year-round residents. Each year, the city and chamber of commerce work together to put on the Winter Texan Fiesta as a way of saying, “Thank you for choosing Mission as your Valley home.” The all-out celebration features top-notch entertainers who put on a three-hour show. This year’s lineup of entertainers included David Church, Terry Smith, Sherwin & Pam Linton, Adam Pope & The Rebels, Southern Anthem and Rich Bellert. Next year the Winter Texan Fiesta will be held in a brand new, renovated facility at Leo Peña Placita Park in downtown Mission, according to Mission City Manager Martin Garza Jr. “When they come back next year, they are going to be in a brand new park facility that’s going to have the same type of
atmosphere with an amphitheater,” said Garza. “But the new design includes more landscaping and we are adding canopies to provide more shade for those attending events at the park.” There will also be much better wheel chair access to the new facility. The city will also have a brand new events center when Winter Texans return in the fall. Garza, said the new events center will enable the city to bring in more events and entertainment for the community. Dog Parks They city’s first dog park – actually two dog parks – should be ready by this fall. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the proposed dog park at Bannworth Park, located on Shary Road, on March 7. The second dog park will be constructed at Bentsen Palm Community Park, located on the city’s Southwest side. The Bannworth dog park will include separate areas for small dogs and large dogs, including areas for training

dogs, plus a shaded area for leashed dogs. Watering stations will be provided for dogs and dog owners, and the park will be surrounded with butterfly gardens. Public Safety Public safety has always been a top priority for the City of Mission. Garza, the city’s former police chief, said they are purchasing two additional patrol cars for their fleet and will add two more by October. They are also investing $2.2 million to install a new state-of-theart police radio system that will enable better communications between police, EMS and fire department personnel. Garza said this will mean better response times on emergency calls as well as better coordination.
Parks & Recreation Mission offers a large parks system that includes 25 parks and two swimming pools. The city is working on plans to create a tennis complex consisting of 16 tennis courts, including a lighted central court for TSTA tournaments, a pro shop and a covered pavilion area to provide shade for tournament participants. Garza said he expects the $1.8 million project to go out for bids in April. The City of Mission invites all Winter Texans to come to Mission and enjoy our tourist-friendly South Texas hospitality, the safe environment, the Valley’s best RV resorts and the quality lifestyle you desire.

Winter Texans flock to Mission, Texas
Welcome to Mission, Texas where more Winter Texans come to enjoy the semi-tropical winters than any other place in the Rio Grande Valley. Mission has approximately 50 Winter Texan mobile home parks and RV resorts – retirement communities – offering a wide range of amenities and activities programs designed to make your retirement years truly golden. The sub-tropical climate of the Rio Grande Valley is not only inviting for Winter Texans, but also attracts 500 species of birds and 200 species of butterflies. The World Birding Center Headquarters and the National Butterfly Center, both located in Mission, offer abundant opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty of the outdoors. For those who pursue birdies of a different type, Mission offers four golf courses: the 27-hole Shary Municipal Golf Course, Howling Trails Golf Course, Meadow Creek Resort & Country Club and The Club at Cimarron, a private club with a beautiful course. Duffers coming to the Valley from other areas are pleasantly surprised at the bargain prices for a round of golf in the Mission area. For those who enjoy an active lifestyle there is plenty to do in Mission. Many of the mobile home parks and RV resorts have their own swimming pools, and the City of Mission has two city pools, an indoor pool at Bannworth Park and a newly-renovated
outdoor pool at Mayberry. Pickleball anyone? Mission Parks & Recreation has a very active senior pickleball program. Recreational softball programs are also available. Speaking of parks, Mission has 25 city parks, including the 63-acre Bentsen Palm Community Park, a regional park with picnic shelters, a two-acre pond with pier, lighted baseball/softball fields, restrooms, playground, basketball courts, shuffleboard courts, three lighted tennis courts, and a two-mile walking trail. Another popular park is Bannworth Park, which includes a jogging trail, playground, pond with a pier (and lots of ducks), picnic pavilion, picnic tables, football/soccer field, baseball/softball field, restrooms, and play area. The Mission Hike & Bike Trail provides a peaceful setting for Winter Texans to walk, jog or bike along a five-mile paved trail through a wooded area that leads to the World Birding Center, just down the road from several of Mission’s popular RV resort destinations. If you’re an artist, or if you fancy taking up painting or ceramics, Mission’s Upper Valley Art League may be your cup of tea. Local artists put together classes, art shows and exhibitions for the public to enjoy. You can enjoy the delightful Mexican culture of folklórico dancers and mariachi

Affordable Retirement Lifestyle
Mission has been named as one of the best places to retire because the cost of living is much lower than most other retirement areas, and it offers all the amenities and pleasurable activities seniors look for today. Many Winter Texans have tried visiting Florida and Arizona, but found the Rio Grande Valley of Texas to be much more affordable and enjoyable. They also find it is easier to access great entertainment offered either in their own resort or by neighboring resorts just down the road – at very affordable prices. You will find the people are friendlier in the Rio Grande Valley too. The city of Mission and local businesses have been rolling out the red carpet for Winter Texans for over 40 years and they look forward to your arrival each fall and winter. So, come on down and take a pontoon boat ride on the Rio Grande and sip a margarita or enjoy dinner as you take in the scenic vistas along the river. We’ll be waiting for you with open arms. And you can leave your snow shovel at home! Visit us online at discovermission.com or call the Mission Chamber of Commerce for more information at 956.585.2727.

Come to Alamo, Texas
Where the Weather is Warm and the People Are Friendly
M
any Winter Texans have found the City of Alamo to be the perfect spot to spend their winters in the Rio Grande Valley. The community offers that welcoming small-town atmosphere where winter tourists and retirees come to enjoy their warm South Texas hospitality. Alamo also offers an abundance of friendly RV resorts that provide all the amenities retirees want to enjoy in their active retirement
lifestyle. Alamo City Manager Luciano Ozuna said winter tourists are welcome and important to the city. “Ask them to keep coming back,” he said. “We welcome them with open arms.” In Alamo, the mobile home and RV retirement communities have a good friend at city hall. “We stand ready to assist our RV parks in any way we can. We’re always there to extend our helping hand,” Ozuna said. If you love nature and the outdoors, you’ll love Alamo, where you’ll find the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge right next door. The 2,088-acre refuge has been called “The Jewel of the National Wildlife Refuge System” be-
cause of the great diversity of its biological system. Located at the crossroads of two major flyways for migratory birds, the refuge is where birders flock to observe hundreds of species of birds and butterflies as well as other wildlife, such as the bobcat and the endangered ocelot. Alamo is a small town with a population of just under 20,000, according to the 2016 population estimates, but it offers all the basic needs of its residents and visitors with a shopping center, a Walmart store and several popular restaurants, such as the famous Willie’s Barbecue, El Dorado Restaurant and the new El Toro Restaurant. And it’s just a short drive to the neighboring cities of Pharr and McAllen for the largest variety retail stores in the Valley, plus several major hospitals, if the need should arise. The City of Alamo is the winter home for Winter Texans at 12 mobile home and RV parks, which offer a variety of activities including professional entertainment shows, music jams, craft and quilt shows, some of the best in NASCAR remote controlled racing, drone flying, target practice and shuffleboard. Some of the Rio Grande Valley’s larger winter resort communities are located in Al-

amo, such as Alamo Rec-Veh, Alamo Palms, Alamo Rose, Trophy Gardens, Winter Ranch and Casa del Valle. Some of the parks have golf courses, as does Alamo Country Club. A popular attraction is one of the largest flea markets in the Valley on Highway 83/I-2 and Cesar Chavez Road. Hundreds flock to the expanding market several days a week. The city completed a new museum last year and has had several exhibits, starting with a permanent Galleria of Angels. Currently visitors can view a display of nearly 100 Madonna and Madonna and Child figurines. Every year, the city and the chamber of commerce host the Alamo Open Golf Tournament and the Winter Texan Appreciation party. For those who stick around a while, there’s the Watermelon Festival and sanctioned Barbecue Cook-off in early May. So, when you come to the Rio Grande Valley, come to Alamo for the perfect retirement lifestyle.

Wilder Resorts - The Gold Standard of the RGV
Wilder RV Resorts have been a leader in Winter Texan resorts in the Rio Grande Valley for decades. They have a large number of amenities in the resorts along with some of the best activities around at some of the best pricing in the Valley. Wilder RV Resorts has a location in Harlingen (Park Place Estates), 3 locations in Alamo (Alamo Rose, Trophy Gardens, Winter Ranch), 3 locations in Pharr (Texas Trails, Tip O’ Texas, Tropic Star), and a location in Mission (Blue Bonnet). Take a look at them on the web sites at http:// www.wilderresortstexas.com. We believe you will find a place that is just right for your interests and enjoyment. The resorts have large pet-friendly areas and pet walking areas (leash required). Many have a fenced dog park where your dogs can run and enjoy some time outside with you. Some of the friendliest and most welcoming people stay at the Resorts so you would always feel welcome and not feel alone. New ideas are always being explored and adopted when they fit the residents in the Resorts. For example – Alamo Rose introduced a pilot program during the 2016/2017 season involving radio con-
trolled cars. Residents got together and have set up a track to race each other and it has really gone over well. The program is being explored to be expanded into the other resorts and then possibly have contests between the Resorts to see who has the best cars and drivers. Tip O’ Texas has their new radio controlled car track up and running. Bus trips are a mainstay in the resorts with resorts sharing the buses. Trips are scheduled and the bus ride is free (tips for the driver if you like). The trips are scheduled through the Activity Office with suggestions always welcomed. There are activity departments at all resorts with activity directors who schedule bands for dances, entertainment, activities for everyone and dinners for special occasions. As a resident you too can join in the fun that is planned for everyone. Relax at the pools, enjoy a game of shuffleboard, enjoy working in the woodshop at those resorts that have this facility. Play cards with other residents as well as play some pool or billiards with the new friends you will meet here. At Wilder RV Resorts, regular maintenance of our facilities is important to us and certainly to our residents. We have
RVer’s TIRED
recently undertaken steps to enhance our maintenance program in Texas. The Texas Division manager now lives in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas year-round so he can keep a close eye on each of our resorts in the area. We are working hard everyday to ensure the Wilder RV Resorts are not only well-maintained, but are also a great, fun place for everyone to enjoy. So, if you are looking for a place that you can call home and relax during the cold winter months – or even to stay year round as more and more folks are doing – then give the Wilder RV Resorts a look; I think you will be pleasantly surprised by what you find. Come stay in your RV or bring in a park model or mobile home and enjoy some of our “New Resident” specials. We hope to see you soon. The Valley is quickly becoming the premier place to visit and Wilder RV Resorts is the premier place to stay. PAID ADVERTISEMENT

Ranchero Village and Rio Valley Estates A splash of sun on the tropical palm trees swaying in the breeze, melodious strains of a song well sung, and cheers of victory in a competitive pickleball match: those are the sights and sounds that capture the essence of life in Ranchero Village and Rio Valley Estates. Ranchero Village is tucked away from the main streets and heavy traffic for a quiet setting featuring wide, tree-lined streets and large concrete pads to accommodate your mobile home or RV. Rio Valley Estates, Ranchero’s sister park, is located near the heart of Weslaco’s thriving business community, giving Winter Texans easy access to shopping, dining and entertainment. Both immaculately maintained and landscaped parks offer a host of amenities designed to make your home-away-fromhome enjoyable and comfortable. Both sister parks offer a variety of activities taking advantage of the swimming pools and spas, shuffleboard courts, and recreational halls at each park. Ranchero also has a woodworking shop, craft room, billiards, ceramics shop, pickleball court and free cable TV. These are active communities with a
full schedule of activities for the residents to enjoy, including dances, jam sessions, bingo, billiards, horse shoes, arts & crafts, dinners, tours, a variety of card games and Ladies Day Out (while the men enjoy a day at the golf course), and some very good live entertainment. Resident Doug Cowling said people who enjoy shuffleboard should come to Ranchero Village because, “We have the best courts in the Valley!” Of course, the residents love to eat. From fresh cinnamon rolls to biscuits and gravy or pancakes, breakfasts are held several days a week, and they often have hamburger cookouts or pot luck dinners for all to enjoy. Ranchero Village and Rio Valley Estates are centrally located in the mid-Valley and are only 15 minutes from the outlet mall in Mercedes for some great shopping. It is 20 minutes to Harlingen and 25 minutes to McAllen for still more shopping and dining possibilities. For medical emergencies, Knapp Medical Center is only five minutes away and Harlingen and McAllen are the epicenters for a wide array of medical specialists and several hospitals. Paul Flannery, a 12-year-resident, said

the thing that makes Ranchero Village so special is that it is privately owned. “If we have a problem with something in the park, the owners are willing to work with us. That is not true in the larger corporately owned parks.” Virgil Kappes, from northern Minnesota, says he has been coming to Ranchero Village for 29 years. He loves the friendly people who are like a second family, the recreational activities and the weather. While he was enjoying a warm sunny day, it was six degrees back home. Jim Lindquist is formerly from Minnesota but decided he liked it at Ranchero Village so much he made it his permanent home and refers to himself as a “Summer Minnesotan” when he goes back to visit family.
There are a limited number of lots and mobile homes available, so don’t miss out on all the fun! Call Ranchero Village at 956-968-6223 or Rio Valley Estates at 956-968-2708 to make a reservation. For more information, visit their websites at www.rancherovillageTx.com or www.riovalleyestates.com.

Friends, laughs, good times highlight USA vs Canada softball Larry Boggs stood up, dressed in his patriotic red, white and blue shirt and shorts, held the megaphone (more like a miniphone) to his mouth and made one of several announcements.” “Today’s official attendance is 10,682,” said Boggs, whose goatee resembled that of Baseball Hall of Famer Wade Boggs – but there was no relation, Larry Boggs said. “Thank you all for your attendance.” Obviously, Boggs, who lives in Branson, Mo., but stays at Chimney Park in Mission during the winter, was being a bit optimistic – just overestimating by a little more than 10,200 – but that wasn’t the point. The crowd laughed – and that
was the point of the entire day during the annual US-Canada Senior Softball games held at Westside Park in McAllen on March 8. “This is entertaining and fun and everybody is all excited,” said Milly Laux who, along with her husband Larry have come to the games for the past three years. “It’s a friendly competition with lots of laughs and we get to see a lot of our friends, and make new ones.” Three games were scheduled for the day, led off by the Competitive Division’s U.S. versus Canada matchup, won by the U.S. team in a rout this year. The U.S. had just a little too much firepower for Team
Canada to keep up with, including slugger Vance Freeman. During one at-bat the outfield positioned themselves so deep that when he ripped a shot to centerfield, they were able to hold it to a single. The next time up, however, Freeman crushed a ball that at first looked like it would leave the ballpark. Instead, it dropped just a couple feet before the outfield fence and he ended up with an easy triple. Freeman ended up getting walked once and going 3-for-3 at the plate. It was his first time in the U.S. Canada game, just finishing off the Senior League, and being part of the championship team, the day before. “That triple felt pretty good – if it
wasn’t for my injured knee and pulled muscle in the other leg, it would’ve been an inside the park home run,” said Freeman, who is from Lawrence, Kansas and winters at Alamo Palms RV Park. “This was a lot of fun. The guys on my team were absolutely terrific and there were five guys on the other team that we played against yesterday so they were giving me a hard time – that was fun.” Freeman said he had been playing baseball/softball for 43 years now but not in school, even though he was clearly an athlete. He did receive scholarship offers, however, to run cross country and track See SOFTBALL pg. 23

From pg. 22 but went into the working world instead – and he’s glad to be here now instead of back home. “I’d be back home shoveling snow and fixing toilets,” said Freeman, adding he would be working part time at an apartment complex if he was home. “I’d be freezing my butt off. I love it here.” During the game in the background, Boggs continued with his announcements – at one point encouraging the three sets of bleachers, filled with people carrying or wearing U.S. or Canada flags – some with both ¬¬– to start the wave. In between some innings there were sack races and hula hoop competitions. Later in the day a “non-competitive” matchup was scheduled to take place as well as a game between the U.S. and Texas. Ed Martens, who has organized the event for several years, walked from dugout to dugout – as the “Competitive” game was coming to a close, the Leisure group was about to start. Martens emphasized that sometimes it’s difficult to keep the competitive nature tamed down a little bit and the key is having fun. Still, winning and having fun do go hand in hand – especially when that competitive spirit is leading the way. “Sometimes we’ve had some people who are just a little too competitive,” said Martens, who played baseball most of his life before the transition to softball. “Our

goal really is to have a good time and show how much fun it is to be able to play and have the fellowship.” “My husband’s warming up right now,” said Darlene Neel, from Tinley Park, Ill., and a Bentsen Grove Resort resident is Mission. “We are from Illinois but he’s playing for Canada since they didn’t have enough players. That’s why I have dual flags.” Fans entered the park and were greeted by one of four ladies – Judy McHugo, Lee Watts, Fayeth Witkowski or Brenda Lane – who offered a flag for whichever team the fan was cheering for…until they ran out of U.S. flags and had only Canada flags remaining. “My husband plays and he looks forward to this from June until we get here,” Watts said. “He loves playing softball and he loves being able to do it all year.” The game signals the end of the Senior Texan Softball League season, following the league’s championship games. The league is open to Winter Texans and locals alike and Martens wanted to make sure to let people know that if anyone’s interested in being part of the league next season that they can give him a call at 956-581-2254. “We are blessed to be able to keep playing this sport,” Martens said. “And we have different levels so everyone can enjoy it.” The Fall season goes from Nov. 1 to Jan. 5 and the Winter League begins Jan. 6 and goes through approximately March 8.

Nature lovers from across the U.S. flock to the Rio Grande By Herb Moering One of the major attractions drawing visitors to the Rio Grande Valley is its varieties of birds and butterflies. The migration path of many of the flyers runs right through the Valley and that draws people not just from the U.S. but from many other countries in the world. Those who come to the Valley’s World Birding Center system with its nine satellites between Roma and South Padre Island, are part of a worldwide hobby with millions of people who enjoy watching birds and recording the sightings. There’s a lot more to this hobby than just spotting a pretty bird. Those thousands of reported sightings contribute to hundreds of conservation decisions and peer-reviewed papers, fueling thousands of student projects while also helping inform those involved worldwide in bird

population research, according to the ebird.org website. The number of bird species that have been spotted in the Valley is approximately 535, according to Mary Gustafson, a bird biologist who is a full-time consultant for client companies and individuals. The number of species here is more than any state except for the four southern border states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. She is an active birder and at various centers she visits on her own or with clients has racked up an impressive number of sightings. For example, she says there are some interesting birds at Estero Llano Grande State Park in Weslaco, which is one of the World Birding Center network sites. She’s observed 281 species, which places her high among bird spotters at the park. Currently the park is considered
a hotspot for birds, which over the past eight years has had 341 different specie sightings. Gustafson said recent rare sightings include a blue bunting and green mango hummingbird at Quinta Mazatlan in McAllen and a rose-throated becard at the Inn at Chachalaca Bend in Los Fresnos. “Communications is the key to bringing in birders (to the valley),” Gustafson said, who has been serious about birds since she was five or six. The same comment was made by Grant Jense, a former wildlife biologist with 35 years of service in the state of Utah. “International phones and the internet have made birding the fastest growing sport in the country,” Jense said. “People sight a rare bird and share it, calling friends and putting it on the internet.” For example, recent rare sight-
ings have included a long-eared owl at the Edinburg Scenic Wetlands, broad-tailed hummingbird, hammond’s flycatcher and wood stork at Estero Llano Grande State Park. Jense, who had spent most of his career on the hunting and fishing side in Utah, ended with bird studies and it sort of grew on him, he said. He and his first wife began traveling with a fifth wheel when he retired in 2002, and after stays in Arizona, made their way to Texas as they had a son in the Air Force in San Antonio. “Texas has a reputation about bird migration and the Rio Grande Valley is well known,” Jense said. “People come from Europe, Asia and other places to see certain species.” He said the spring migration is more concentrated in birds arriving in large numbers and needing to feed after crossing 400 to 450 miles of open water across the Gulf from Mexico. There are plenty of birds to be found during the winter in the Valley. He noted that Texas state parks cater to birders with guided walks. The Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge south of Alamo has bird walks Thursday through Saturday. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Park Ranger Laura de la Garza said they are led by knowledgeable volunteers. There are also nature tram rides offered through March from Thursday through Sunday, which takes visitors to the scrub forest, a stop at the old cemetery and to the Rio Grande River. The refuge draws approximately 130,000 visitors a year, with the heavi-

Most birders average 15 trips to the Valley, he noted. Nature visitors rank third in the Valley’s economy behind only Mexican visitors and Winter Texans, Hackland said. The attraction is the 540 bird species and some 330 butterfly types that have been seen in the Valley, which Hackland said accounts for more than half the numbers found in the entire U.S. If the Gulf Coast is included toward Corpus Christi and Galveston Bay, the numbers climb to 75 percent of all species found in the U.S. “What is so unique is that the Valley is divided into three regions, the coast, the central area and then around Falcon Lake near Roma,” Hackland said, “with different birds in each due to different habitat.” Working for him is Mary Beth Stowe a professional guide, who he claims is among the top 10 in the U.S. when it comes to recognizing bird calls. Stowe, who served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years based in San Diego, began birding at the age of eight after she and a friend were both wrong about a bird call they heard. Records of bird calls sharpened her knowledge. She has a blog at alamoinnbnb.com that lists 50 columns about Valley birding, written as adventures. The prettiest time for her is at and around the South Padre Island birding center in April. Hackland is a part of the visitor industry with his Alamo Inn catering to birders
Butterfly gardens at the National Butterfly Center in Mission attract hundreds of butterfly species. est concentration in February and March, many of them birders, according to de la Garza. Some also come to see the butterfly migration. Jense, has been to Santa Ana as he moves about the Valley quite a bit from his place at Cottonwood RV Park in Mission, which is like a stone’s throw away from Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park. He visits it often as it’s also headquarters for the World Birding Center network and a popular birders destination. Bentsen recently had a rare sighting of a hook-billed kite. He also enjoys Anzalduas County Park at the dam south of Mission, Falcon Dam feeding station, as well as Estero Llano Grande. In April and May he works his way up the coast toward Corpus Christi and beyond. It was natural for Keith Hackland when he came to the Valley in 1997 to get involved with birding, which had been an interest since childhood. He created a tourism business of lodging, tours,
from all over the world. He has hosted visitors from 43 countries, and he knows of at least half a dozen other countries represented in the Valley. Canadians Casey and Karen Balvert from Windsor, Ontario, are here for their seventh season. The couple, who is staying at Tropic Winds Resort in Harlingen, are avid nature photographers, which is another reason many come to the Valley. They had been to Florida but coming to the Valley has been a bargain as to living costs. “When we landed here, we did not realize how unique it is here,” Karen said. They arrive around Nov. 1 and leave about April 1, spending a month in Tennessee on the way home. They especially like Estero Llano Grande because of its array of birds and animals found in the varied landscape of shallow lakes, woodlands and thorn forest. “It’s a nice park and has everything,” Karen said. “It’s handicap friendly, it’s easy to walk with nice boardwalks or there is the tram to ride. And there are benches in the popular viewing areas so one can rest. You can bike and (electric) scooters can be used. Even dogs are allowed.” The couple sort of stumbled onto the 230-acre refuge, and quickly acquired a season’s pass so they come about three times a week to shoot photos and get some exercise, plus meet Winter Texans, families, foreign visitors, even brides and graduates, Karen Balvert said. On the trails they have also met the rather reclusive bobcat, coyote, javelina like pigs and seen the alligators. Casey’s interest lately has been shooting the pair of alligators in the lake with
his long and heavy lens. He has photos of the gators in action consuming a turtle and a catfish. His seriousness is evident with all the photo gear contained in a three-wheel cart that he received as a birthday present. “The equipment was getting really heavy,” he said. For Karen, her main interest is the song birds. Her face lit up when she recalled seeing the parakeets the day before in the volunteers’ RV area, which also included the red crown parrots. “A lot of people don’t realize it’s here, Karen said, “nor do they know much of the city’s small Hugh Ramsey (Nature Park of 54 acres) that we found in Harlingen.” A couple rare sightings of a northern beardless-tyrannulet and lazuli bunting were spotted there. Casey, who has been behind a camera for almost five decades, since he was 18, noted the couple loves to share their best shots on Facebook, in addition to sending photos home.

RIO GRANDE VALLEY
From pg. 1 know the weather is bad to tell them it’s a sunny 70 degrees today in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Wayne Watts, from Twin Lakes RV Park, said he would be back home right now shoveling snow and feeding the horses. Instead, he was outdoors watching his Winter Texan friends playing softball. “The weather here is perfect – you can do a lot in this weather,” he said.” But when you feed the horses you gotta go back out and clean what they ate.” Virgil Kappes said he heard a person could add 10 years to his or her life by wintering in the Valley, away from the miserable cold weather. Hundreds of Winter Texans break in the New Year at South Padre Island for the warmest Polar Bear Dip in the nation.

While they may be jumping into freezing water in places like Ely, Minn. to celebrate the New Year, here they will run into 60plus degree water and then sit down and listen to some Jimmy Buffet style music outside enjoying food and friendship. For Diane Coulter and her husband and friends from Sun Valley Village in Harlingen, 2017 was their first Polar Bear Dip. Not only did they run into the water, but they even made “pinky swear” promises to make the event a tradition as well. “This was a lot of fun,” said Coulter, from Winnipeg, Canada. “We jumped in and were able to come out and not have our teeth chattering. You can be sitting here at this time of year in your shorts and bare feet.” The climate is important for other reasons. Jim McDermid of Minnesota said he has heart and vascular disease and in the Valley the weather is good enough that he can walk almost every day and the

land is flat enough that he does not have to climb while he walks. Friendly People Time and again, Winter Texans list friendliness as big a reason to live here. Not only does that include their neighbors in the park or other parks, but also the people in the community who are happy to have Winter Texans because they appreciate the economic and other benefits they bring to the Valley. “Really that’s why my wife and I keep coming back,” said Larry Boggs, a Branson, Mo., resident during the non-winter months and a Chimney Park resident during the winter. “The best way to say it is that they welcome you with open arms from the moment you get here. We have made so many friends here. We have more friends here than we do back home – that’s the truth.” Winter Texans who have been to Florida explain why they prefer Texas. They
don’t feel welcome in Florida; the people there are unfriendly and don’t appreciate them as they are appreciated South Texas. There are “Welcome Home” fiestas as winter guests begin to arrive in the Fall. Most RGV communities host “Winter Texan Appreciation” events at the end of the winter season as well. “We’ve been to Florida,” said Darlene Neel, of Tinley Park, Ill. She and her husband live at Chimney Park in Mission. When they were looking for a place to move, they checked out both Florida and Arizona – and the decision to come to South Texas was an easy one. “It’s not anywhere near as friendly [as Texas].” Business owners and government officials will talk about relationships that were built, commonly calling the winter visitors more than just part-time visitors. “We’ve built relationships with so many of them,” said Jennifer Hart, See RIO GRANDE VALLEY pg. 28

McAllen Monarch Festival is March 17
The McAllen Monarch Festival is the place to be for anyone wanting to know more about monarch butterflies, but for the best in-depth look at all the festival has to offer, guests should attend the speaker series presentations given in The Cottage at Quinta Mazatlán. Professionals from every discipline will be discussing entomology (Dr. John Goolsby), caterpillars (Berry Nall), butterflies of the Rio Grande Valley (Mike Rickard), butterfly garden design (Silvia Barr), and monarch butterflies (John Brush). Dr. John Goolsby will be presenting “Meet an Entomologist” at 11 a.m., 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. Dr. Goolsby is a native of the Rio Grande Valley and is a researcher with the United States Department of Agriculture in Mission, Texas. He is a scientist and entomologist. Berry Nall will be presenting “Caterpillars” at 11 a.m. He is a pastor and teacher who is fascinated by butterflies at all stages of their lives. For the past 10 years he has been seeking to rear as many species as possible from egg to adult. Mike Rickard will be presenting on “Butterflies of the Valley” at 12 p.m. He did extensive butterfly field studies throughout Texas for 30 years, focusing on habitat and host plants. His photo-
graphic databases now consist of over 45,000 images representing 270 of the Lower Rio Grande Valley butterfly species and approximately 700 moth species. Silvia Barr will present on “Designing a Butterfly Garden” at 1 p.m. She is a horticulturist at Quinta Mazatlán and works with McAllen schools and other entities sharing knowledge about native plants to promote their use in landscapes in schools, businesses, and homes. She has a B.S. in Biology and a Master’s Degree in Horticulture. John Brush is the Urban Ecologist at Quinta Mazatlán and will present “Magnificent Monarch” at 2 p.m. He graduated with his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from the University of Texas - Pan American in 2013 and is now a graduate student at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, where he works in the agroecology lab. His current project focuses on bird communities in urban habitats, which he hopes will further conservation of birds and other wildlife in our towns and cities. The McAllen Monarch Festival takes place at Quinta Mazatlan on Saturday, March 17 between 10 and 3 p.m. Admission is $5 per person at the gate entrance. For more information, visit www.quintamazatlan.com or call 956-681-3370.

28 MARCH 15, 2018 RIO GRANDE VALLEY
From pg. 26 co-owner with her husband of the popular Riverside Club along the Rio Grande in Mission. “A lot of them have truly become like family to us.” Texas even coined the endearing name “Winter Texan” for those adopted Texans from up north. Great Social Life and Activities Winter Texans are known for having fun. The Valley provides tons of it too. Peruse through the Parks Calendar in any January or February edition of the Winter Texan Times – see it online at www.wintertexantimes.com By the end of March the season is coming to a close and the park activities have tapered down – but there is still plenty to do. The list is seemingly never-ending. What’s more impressive is that there are more and more activities and social events being added on a regular basis as activity directors and park managers realize that the hobbies of Winter Texans today are different than those of yesterday, so they look to accommodate all – and they’ve done a great job at it. Some of the activities gaining popularity include pickleball, remote-control race car competitions (Encore Parks actually have a racing series between three of its parks and expects it to grow), the Canadian game petanque and cycling. There are still large groups of shuffleboard players – some ranked internationally – as well as the ageless favorites like cards, bingo, quilt making, woodcarving, aerobics, yoga and other exercising, and so much
www.wttrgv.com
more. Golf, of course, is huge with a long-standing annual tournaments played throughout the Valley, such as the “Life Begins at 40” tournament played at Harlingen Country Club. It’s the perfect sport that can be played for many years, especially when the weather is in the 70s. There’s also an annual hugely popular event known as the Golden Age Olympics which offers dozens of active and not so active events that seniors – Winter Texans and locals – can compete in. There’s, of course, a smorgasbord of craft shows and craft fairs where people can find all sorts of knick-knacks, souvenirs and uniquely inexpensive items for themselves or as gifts. And all that is just the tip of the iceberg. (Sorry, had to use a winter-esque reference). None of that even includes the entertainment – which is broken down into dances, jams and performances to just sit back and enjoy. Live Entertainment Providing that live entertainment are many excellent performers who come to the Valley during their “off season” in Branson, Nashville, Las Vegas and other parts of the country to perform their shows in the RV resorts. The cost is typically in the $7 to $8 range while the same show in Florida or Arizona will cost $10$15 and in Branson – a mini-Nashville if you will – the cost could be $30-$50 or more for the same show. When you go to 30 or more shows or dances per season, those savings add up. Dancing the Night Away Of course, the Winter Texans aren’t
WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com
kids anymore – but they can certainly handle their own when it comes to dancing. Whether it’s line dancing, square dancing, waltzes, cha-chas, jitterbugs or anything else, these visitors know how to make a dance floor come alive. “That’s the reason we’re here; we dance every chance we get. Every night if we can,” said Karen Tripp, who was waltzing with her husband Trevor to the sound of the Swing Street Band. “We absolutely love it. We were dancing before we even met. We’ll go square dancing, ballroom dancing, club dancing, social dancing. There’s nothing better anywhere.” It’s definitely not hard to find a dance – no matter what your swing is. And the events in the Parks Calendar are activities that are open to out-of-park guests, so you’re buffet of things to do is limitless. Of course, none of that includes any of the activities that are going on outside the parks. South Texas is known for birding and butterflying and South Padre Island and world-class fishing and professional soccer and basketball and....need we go on? Adding to the social aspect of the Winter Texan lifestyle is the park community of friends and neighbors who participate in many activities together. It’s Down Right Affordable It’s a fact: Texas is much more economical than Florida and Arizona. According to CBS’ Moneywatch, Harlingen is the cheapest city to live in and McAllen is the third cheapest in the United States. What’s not to like about that? Winter Texan John Tim says, “People
who know they have money go to Florida. People who think they have money go to Arizona. Everybody else goes to Texas because it is the most economical place to live.” According to an AARP article, Texas was the best state to retire because it had the lowest taxes. Texas has no state income tax. And as for property taxes, homeowners can claim a homestead exemption and also get their taxes frozen if they are age 65 or older. Those on a very restricted budget, as well as those who just like to save money, can find great bargains at local flea markets, such as Don-Wes Flea Market, the local ropa usada (used clothing store) and other thrift stores that are abundant in the RGV. Craft and yard sales can be found almost every weekend on what seems like every street – if you’re not too tied up at the park sales. There’s also Progreso, Mexico, where many Winter Texans still enjoy going for a day of eating, shopping and having a few cold beverages. Winter Texans also agreed they save a lot of money on heating fuel for their homes by coming to the Valley where the winters are mild. There are a variety of reasons why people choose to come the Rio Grande Valley. Whether it’s being able to fish or golf year-round or the social life of tightknit Winter Texan communities in the parks, most folks want to get out and have a good time enjoying their retirement. And South Texas provides exactly what they’re are looking for – and maybe even a good bit more.

Bird and Butterfly Events in the RGV
In addition to hitting the parks and birding centers, special events are planned for birders. Among the first of the season is the annual Wild in Willacy Nature and Heritage Festival set for Oct. 18-20 in Raymondville this fall. It is both an opportunity to go birding, take part in a photo contest, see aspects of ranching and taste unique foods. See the website for information. The annual RGV Birding Festival that begins Nov. 7 in Harlingen is one of the largest and oldest in the U.S., said Keith Hackland a leader in the RGV nature tourism industry. It consists of educational seminars, a myriad of field trips all over the Valley with professional guides and social events. For more information, check the festival website. Dovetailing that festival is the Texas Butterfly Festival, planned for Nov. 3-6 in the fall hosted by the National Butterfly Center (NBC) in Mission. The publication USA Today has called Mission “the butterfly capital of the USA.” While the focus of the field trips, educational activities, North American photo contest and free Community Day for fam-
ilies is on the 230 plus species of butterflies recorded at NBC, some 270 different birds have also been spotted there over the years. Luciano Guerra, who works at the butterfly center near Bentsen State Park, said that last November’s festival visitors came from 23 states and four foreign countries. Many of them saw 60 different species in a day. Guerra noted that in the first week of March, 75 different species of butterflies have been recorded. Among that figure were the very rare zebra cross-streak and hidden-ray, skipper. Others not seen very often were the hammock, evans, double-dotted and mercurial skippers, bandcelled sister, shadowed hairstreak and angled leafwing. The figures in earlier months has been 100 plus species. Guerra emphasized the species are wild and free-flying. More information is on the NBC website. An event coming up this Saturday is the Monarch Festival scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Quinta Mazatlan in McAllen. The monarch is the official state insect of Texas. The festival includes a

30 MARCH 15, 2018 YEAR-AROUND GOLF
From pg. 2 moguls, doglegs and tilted fairways that seem to lean toward all of the water hazards. Plus, there’s always the South Texas wind, which is prevalent on this Edinburg public course. Another challenging – and beautiful course is Tierra Santa in Weslaco, which is known for maybe the nicest finishing holes in the Rio Grande Valley. Golfers can choose to go over a small lake and hope for a reward. Pin placement will definitely make you think about this hole before attacking it. Some Winter Texan communities have their own golf course, like Adobe Wells in McAllen with an 18-hole, par-3 course or Llano Grande Resort in Mercedes with a full 18-hole course that measures from 5,293 yards to 6,781 yards at the tips and includes four holes that are more than 500 yards long, including the finishing No. 18 at 554 yards from the tips. Long Island Village, a gated community located just across the Intracoastal Waterway via a swing bridge from Port Isabel. It has maybe the shortest hole in the Valley – a 50-yard par-3. The shot has to carry the full 50 yards and chances are the club selection will be close to what someone uses for 110 yards “You need accurate shots out here,” said Garry Stebbins, who has lived at Long Island Village for 10 years and is
www.wttrgv.com
from Indiana. “It’s a beautiful par-3, 18hole course, but don’t let the yardage make you think it’s easy. Our signature hole is 140 yards, but it’s more like 170180 with the wind.” Brownsville Golf Center is that city’s municipal golf course and offers a variety of Winter Texan specials, and some of the most moderate prices across the Valley. But there are more courses to attack – from South Padre Island Golf Club and its beautiful background of the Laguna Madre on some holes to the recently renovated Tierra del Sol in Pharr that makes it a priority to take care of its Winter Texans. Golf in the Rio Grande Valley provides good prices, better Winter Texan specials and the best winter weather any golfer could want – especially if that golfer is from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska....

MARCH 15, 2018 33 www.wttrgv.com
www.wttrgv.com From pg. 1 much she and her husband enjoyed the band. “We went to see the Glenn Miller Band the other night and I have to tell you that you all are every bit as good as they are,” she said. “Why thank you so much,” Comeau replied excitedly. “And you know what? Your music is more danceable,” she said. The Alveys especially enjoyed the songs “Satin Doll” and “When I Fall in Love,” and the couple was a staple on the dance floor, participating in the jitterbug, fox trot, cha cha, waltz and more. “There is so much dancing down here in the Rio Grande Valley, we absolutely love it,” said Penny, who enjoys dancing to Sweetwater, the Ramblers and many more. “We will go out as many times a week as possible and follow our favorite bands and meet so many people.” Comeau took over the Swing Street Band four years ago. The band is made up mostly of current or retired band directors from local middle schools and high schools. “It gives them a chance to perform and not just teach, which is something of
course they love to do,” Comeau said. Several of the band members are graduates of Texas A&M Kingsville, where its music program is highly recognized. “I called them once to let them know how many graduates I had from their program,” Comeau said. “They told me that I had some of their best ex-students.” Comeau said there are several types of fans that range from seasoned ballroom dancers to folks who just like to move around to the music. Then there are those who don’t dance but go to just hear the music – just because of the big band sound. The band plays a variety of shows and up-tempo music, beautiful waltzes, and even Latin rhythm sprinkled through the concert. The band was founded in the 1990s and was called The Society for the Preservation of Big Band Music. When Comeau took over, he made several changes and the band continues to thrive today. “We love listening to them, they are such a professional band,” said Lori Engebrutson, from Fun N Sun Resort in San Benito. “They are a lot of fun and play so many songs that you can dance to. And if you don’t like to dance, they are just great to listen to.”

Costa Messa Has It All!
Amazingly Delicious Food, Great Dining Atmosphere and Wide Selection
If you ever read something like, “My friend arrived late,” I can tell you how the story ends - “I ate too much.” This week I visited Costa Messa, – a wonderful Mexican restaurant with three McAllen locations. I visited the one at 5248 N. 10th St., McAllen. I love this place and was meeting a friend for lunch – but my friend arrived late.... you know how this ends. I love salsa – and at Costa Messa they brought a variety of salsas with their chips. I also dug into amazing grilled jalapenos. I’m a six-time hot-pepper eating contest winner but I’m older now – I like to taste my food. These peppers had a kick, but the flavor was also intense. I ordered the choriqueso as an appetizer, a beautiful mix of melted cheese and chorizo. I especially love these with the fresh corn tortillas served with them. After chips and salsa, a chile toreado (the jalapeno) and three choriqueso tacos, I was content. I ignored being content and ordered the Fajita al Chipotle, super tender fajita strips grilled with onions, bell peppers and topped with a spicy chipotle sauce. The grilled onions carried a tantalizing taste from the chipotle, and the juices from the meat. This meal is enough for two people. I couldn’t finish it. The food and service is amazing, the way you want to be treated when you go out to eat. My buddy ordered La Plancha – and after the first bite into it he said, “This is how fajita should be made.” He’s a much tougher critic than me. General Manager Art DeLeon brought a couple of plates to show what’s most popular with the Winter Texans, who are regular visitors. One was the Mexican plate, a delicious meal consisting of two enchiladas, a taco and chalupa, served with rice and beans. Costa Messa has a wide variety of delicious meals to choose from. So, if someone in your party doesn’t want Mexican food there’s plenty to choose from, including steaks, shrimp, chicken, pork chops, fish and soups and salads. The atmosphere is excellent and the food is a dining delight. Just be careful that you don’t eat too much. It’s so tempting, but it was worth every last bite.
