Winter Texans enjoy Nuevo Progreso, Mexico
By Herb Moering Winter Texans were the toast of Nuevo Progreso during the 42nd annual Winter Tourist Appreciation Day on March 21. The appreciation offered by Progreso officials included the selection of a king and queen for the event, Bob and Jody Ferns, who spend the winter season at Siesta Village in Weslaco. The couple was given a pair of Mexican sombreros for crowns along with a sash each proclaiming them the 2018 Winter Texan King and Queen. A plaque and other gifts were presented along with a large bouquet of roses for Jody. The Ferns said they were surprised by their selection. They learned they had been recommended by their dentist in Progreso. The couple had been going to the border city every year since arriving in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) in 2004. The mayor of Nuevo Progreso spoke along with several visiting dignitaries from Texas cities, citing their common interests. A bridge parade had been staged earlier in the morning, marking the com-
monalty found on both sides of the border. With the opening ceremonies completed, the cry was “let’s party!” And for this huge crowd of Winter Texans that’s exactly what they seemed to find enjoyable. Yvonne Thomas, from Minnesota, and Char Salewske, of Iowa, who are both at Tip-O-Texas RV Resort in Pharr, looked to be enjoying the party atmosphere, both wearing flower head wreaths. Thomas, who has been coming to the RGV for six years, likes the peanuts and margaritas at the appreciation day, which she has attended several times. Her best friend, Salewske, mentioned how easy it is to make friends. She and Thomas met at a dance with their husbands. They both find people really friendly, more than other places in the country where they have stayed. It’s also much less expensive to live in the Valley, they agreed. And there are plenty of activities for meeting people, including the dancing. See APPRECIATION pg. 18
Bob and Jody Ferns received sombreros and sashes from the mayor of Nuevo Progreso after being tapped for the honor of 2018 King and Queen of the Mexican city’s Winter Tourist Appreciation Day on March 21.
Cyclists join GA Olympics Bike Tour
Gary, on left, and Sharon Branson, with help from Tony Chos help coordinate the Tip O’ Texas Resort Roadrunners, who came to be part of the Golden Age Olympics Bike Tour at Bentsen State Park.
by Herb Moering There were bikes ranging from 18-speed to a few three-wheelers and everything in between, including mountain, 3-speed, balloon-tired cruisers, recumbents and folding types, in use by some 275 cyclists taking part in the Golden Age Olympics Bike Tour Feb. 7 at Bentsen State Park in Mission. The skies featured dark clouds, but no rain as the riders unloaded bikes in the parking lots and then moved to the staging area at the park entrance. Genial chatter along with some picture-taking marked the wait among the cyclists, almost all from Mid-Valley RV resorts, until the moment came to ride out across the levee and onto the park’s three-mile loop. The cyclists ranged from the serious, like Gary and Sharon Branson from Tip O’ Texas RV Resort in Pharr, to the occasional rider in Roy Hansen, from Winter Ranch RV Resort in Alamo. Winter Texan wins onion-eating contest at Onion Fest
Dennis Purcell immediately recognized he had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in front of him. His response? He danced as if nobody was watching. Purcell was one of just a handful of audience volunteers who were given the chance to dance along with the dancing horses at the 29th annual Onion Fest in at City Park in Weslaco. “That was absolutely fantastic, a dream,” said Purcell, a Cedar Rapids, Iowa native who has spent the past 16 years in Palm Shadows RV Resort. He couldn’t take the smile off his face after the five minutes of fun in front of more than 1,000 people there to see the horses and their dancing routines. “That’s something that not everybody gets a chance to do. It was just amazing.” The Andalusion breed has existed for thousands of years and was once popular among Spanish nobility, who used the horses as a war horse or gift in order to aid diplomacy. Today, these horses are used in a variety of equestrian events like jumping and have appeared in many Hollywood films. Jamie Campion stays at Bit-OHeaven RV Park in Donna and said she had a blast dancing. The Minnesota native said she was actually looking forward to going back north. “We own horses back there,” she said. “I’m gonna go train them to do this. – Just kidding.”
She may have a conflict of interest there. Her husband James Campion may want to look for a career as a professional food eating contestant after winning the annual onion eating contest. “I love onions,” he said after eating two plates filled with chopped up raw 1015 onion. “And these were some sweet and delicious ones.” The day, one of the few days this spring where the temperatures reached the 90s, was filled with entertainment, food, shows, crafts and, of course, onions. The longest lines in front of the many food vendors on hand were at the two booths that were making onion blossoms. People waited as the onion was battered, flowered and dropped into the deep fryer before being pulled out and served hot and fresh. Another long line extended out from under a tent where a 1015 onion was being given away with a goodie bag that had such items as a peeler inside. Carole Hains and Mario Bellavance, from Quebec, were glad to stay at Sunshine RV Resort in Harlingen for an extra three weeks, especially considering it was still very cold and snowing back home. “And we love to come to this festival every year and get an onion blossom,” Carole said. “No words can describe how much we love onion blossoms. They’re just delicious.”
Thank You for a Great Year!
The next longest line for food may have come at the turkey leg tent where visitors with big eyes and larger appetites walked away with monstrous sized turkey legs. Laura Espinoza, director of the event and marketing director for the Weslaco Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber plans a date each year with the Winter Texans in mind, to make sure not too many have returned. It’s almost like a sendoff, and a reminder of the fun and food available in South Texas. “This is their home, many live here all year now and others for three to six months,” Espinoza said. “They come here, stay here, spend their money here and volunteer to help so many businesses and charities and events like this. We’re glad to have this for all the people who are here locally and for the Winter Texans. We know how much they love it.” Corvin and Bonnie Stark said they don’t miss the Onion Fest. The couple is originally from Nebraska but has lived at Pine-to-Palm RV Resort for the past 13 years. “We love our park and we love this festival – we come every year,” Bonnie said. “We love the Valley. There’s so much to do and the people are just Dennis Purcell, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and a resident so nice. We couldn’t go anywhere at Palm Shadows RV Park, dances with the dancing else.” Andalusian horses at the Onion Fest in Weslaco.
Safe travels and we look forward to seeing you next year!

Canada Day celebrated at Riverside Club
Hundreds of Canadians showed up at the Riverside Club in Mission on Tuesday, March 6 to join in the fun of the annual Canada Day celebration. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the music provided by the Riverside Club Band led by Randy Dupuis and enjoying drinks and food. They were a number of couples on the floor at all times and when the line dances started, two lines of dancers filled the room from one end to the other. A group of ladies from Ontario were enjoying a Perita, a 32-ounce margarita with two Peronas dumped upside down in the glass. Each had a straw and were drinking their share. Others were enjoying nachos, barbecue sandwiches and other items from the club’s menu. More than half of the people there were from Ontario with Saskatchewan coming in second. Other provinces represented included Alberta, Newfoundland, Quebec and the Northwest Territory. People attending came from parks in and around the Mission-McAllen area, Edinburg, Pharr, Alamo and Weslaco. Most of those attending said they stayed in the Rio Grande Valley from five to six months due to the extremely cold weather back home in Canada. Others, sadly had a shorter time as they had to go home before the cold was over. Leanna Hastin said the weather at home in Saskatchewan was cold and snowing.
Another Canadian from Saskatchewan said there was a recent blizzard with over a foot of snow near her home. Diane McDougall of Manitoba said there had been 18 inches in two days back home. Everyone who commented on the snow said they were happy to be in South Texas away from the wintery weather back home. Betty Devereaux, who lives in Magic Valley in Weslaco, said she is a third-generation Winter Texan preceded by a great aunt and uncle and then her parents. Her
children have visited so there is a possibility of a fourth generation coming in the future. When asked what they liked to do while in the Valley there were a variety of answers. Bob and Dorothy Bridges said the love to eat and drink and do line dancing. They go to the dances at the Riverside Club quite often. They also enjoyed visiting Progreso. Jeff and Kari Whyte are first time visitors from Alberta staying at Leisure World in Weslaco. They have been visiting in-

laws and seeing the sights and enjoying the warm weather. Brian and Deb Highmoor who live in Seven Oaks in Mission enjoy golfing up to five times a week. Mick and Roe Parent participated in the senior Golden Olympics put on by the city of McAllen. He won a bronze medal in billiards and they also played Texas Hold’um. Alphonse and Suzanne Lesscair are new to the Valley and are enjoying everything as it is their first time to visit and see the sights. Shirley Fischer of Leisure World said she has been coming to the Valley for 15 years and enjoys coming to the Riverside Club to dance. She also enjoys doing activities like shuffleboard in her park. When Randy and Judy Buchko were asked what they liked to do best in the Valley, Randy wiggled his eyebrows mysteriously and said, “We don’t like to tell what we do in the Rio Grande Valley. What happens in the Valley, stays in the Valley!” Paul and Elizabeth Mitchen of Ontario have been coming 11 years. They love the rodeo and livestock show opportunities available in the Valley and they enjoy going to South Padre Island for the beaches. Back home they enjoy taking the ferry on Lake Erie and going to the lake’s beaches.

From pg. 4 They also enjoy the people they meet. Others mentioned festivals like BorderFest, the Texas Citrus Fiesta Parade, and Smokin’ on the Rio. They also like taking part in VFW activities, and seeing the folklorico dance shows put on by La Joya ISD. While most of the folks were from Ontario and the middle provinces, there were a few from the east coast. But perhaps the ones who came the farthest were Gerald and Barbara Thorbin who come from Yellow Knife in the Northwestern Territory where they work in the diamond mines. Gerald says he once found a diamond of 37 carats in the mine. The mines produce brown, yellow and clear diamonds. It’s a distance of over 4000 miles to the Thorbin’s home. Temperatures there in the winter are very harsh. On Cana-

www.wttrgv.com da Day, it was 30 degrees below zero at home. The couple has previously stayed in Hawaii during winter but after coming to the Valley they found they like it better here. Their daughter and son-in-law Sara and Stephen May were visiting from Yellow Knife and enjoying the warm weather. Stephen is a fourth-generation resident of Yellow Knife, which he says it hard to find because the weather is so very cold most of the time. In winter, it is dark all the time and in summer it is daylight all day long. The lake there freezes in October and does not thaw until June. The cold temperatures and the lack of sun in winter are very hard on people so few families stay in the far north long. Regardless of where in Canada they came from, all those attending the Canada Day celebration at the Riverside Club had a great time.

Pharr Hub Phestival coming April 7
The Rio Grande Valley is in full swing when it comes to festivals. The City of Pharr takes center stage April 7 with the annual Pharr Hub Phestival. Gates open at 4 p.m. and the festival, with music, food and a whole lot more, will celebrate until midnight. Among the attractions will be the Pharr Out Kids Nature Day (which sounds fun for adults too) that includes an animal petting zoo, a raptor project, information and exhibits from the World Birding Center, the Austin Bat Conservation and a West Texas Rattlesnake Show. With two major highways cutting through the city of Pharr – Interstate 2 and Hwy. 281 – Pharr is a hub for traffic going from one end of the Valley to another. The city has also used that mantra to attract
business, entertainment, retail and overall growth. Car and motorcycle enthusiasts and collectors will have their show-stopping rides on display and there will be plenty of entertainment from the time the gates open until closing. Drew & The Dancehall Dreamers perform at 5 p.m. Grupo Arroyo performs at 6 p.m. and will be followed by Texas Dezire at 7 p.m. Bo Garza goes on stage at 7:30 p.m. and will be followed by Little Joe y La Familia at 8:45 p.m. Easton Corbin returns to the festival and will end the night; his performance begins at 10 p.m. The cost is $5 after 5 p.m. for ages 12 and older. It is free before 5 p.m. The festival grounds are at Pharr city hall, located in downtown Pharr at 118 S. Cage Blvd.

ball, shuffleboard and pickleball tournaments. Then of course, there are the nature hikes, bird watching, craft shows, quilt shows and woodworking shows and projects – and the list goes on. As you head north, we hope you’ll become a Winter Texan Ambassador and tell your friends and family about all the good times you had this winter. Whatever you enjoy doing in the Rio Grande Valley – whether it’s getting out to play golf several times a week (when the folks up north are dealing with snow and ice) or taking daily bike rides or testing out your new remote control car on the racetrack – tell your friends about it. And let ‘em know we really do appreciate our Winter Texans. We miss you when you’re gone, and we surely look forward to your return in the fall. Have a great summer! And hurry back and see us. values you bring to our local communities all across the Rio Grande Valley. You volunteer in our schools and hospitals. You donate to our food pantries. You provide vital support for our orphanages and children’s homes – on both sides of the border. You even build homes and deliver weekly food supplies to impoverished families in Mexico. When you leave for the summer, you leave behind a big void that no one else can fill. Yet, you balance all that with having fun. What a great time you have doing dozens of different activities in your resorts and parks and at community festivals and events. We enjoy catching you in action as we visit your rock ‘n roll jams, country western dances, RC car races, petanque, bocce

MARCH 29, 2018 17 www.wttrgv.com Riders from Winter Ranch Resort in Alamo had a group picture taken before saddling up for the Feb. 7 GAO Bike Tour at Bentsen State Park in MIssion.
BIKE TOUR From pg. 1
Gary Branson estimates he and his wife have clocked about 50,000 miles on their bikes over the years. In fact, his wife’s foldup bike speedometers are up to 25,000 miles, which included a ride across the state of Kansas last year. The bike comes from an Eugene, Oregon, company, one of the few manufacturers left in the U.S., he said. Gary, who is a resident of Ozawkie, Kansas, has biked across his home state 16 times in addition to doing the popular across Iowa Rag Ride three times. Their park is big into biking, according to Phyll Thackery, a full-time Tip O’ Texas resident who is originally from Kansas City, Missouri. She coordinates all the senior Olympics events for the residents in the park. The park’s Roadrunners have taken the gold in the GAO bike tour for the last
five years. Biking medal awards are based on the percentage of park residents participating. “We have tremendous participation,” Thackery said. “Have had a strong program for years.” She said the resorts’ residents do most everything in Olympics, which means at least two-thirds of all events. Besides the annual tour ride, a group of Roadrunners use every Friday morning to bike four or five miles to a local restaurant. Tony Chos, from Cook, Minnesota, laughed when he noted the Roadrunners have also been called “the Breakfast Club.” Hansen, who summers in northwestern Wisconsin, occasionally goes with one of two groups of Winter Ranch “breakfast riders” on Tuesdays. However, that day is reserved more for his golfing. The Tuesday riders bike between five and 10 miles, while another group will travel around 25 miles on Fridays.
Flo Reed and her husband, Doug, have been organizing rides at Winter Ranch since 1998. They lead the Friday group, which used to include trips to Mexico, like riding to and taking the Los Ebanos Ferry and Nuevo Progreso as well as Falcon Dam on the border. Now the bikes get carted to South Padre Island for an outing or ridden to Bentsen State Park, she said. A few of those doing the three-mile loop at the state park, one or more times, considered cycling back to Winter Ranch, which is about 24 miles away, but that depended upon the weather. The Reeds, who have been full-time RVers since 1996, travel much of the year. Flo commented that “we go looking for bike trails all over the country.” Tropic Star Bicycle Bunch Also, the Tropic Star Bicycle Bunch came to ride. It is another group that likes to stop for something to eat during weekly rides. Every Tuesday a couple of groups of
between 30 and 40 will bicycle three or four miles to one of seven restaurants included on their circuit, led by Bernie and Pauline Loiselle and assisted by Leon and Eleanor Morrisette, both couples from the Winnipeg, Manitoba area. About 60 Bicycle Bunch riders came to the state park, with most doing the loop once, according to the Loiselles, who took up biking after arriving in the RGV 11 years ago. They figured three or four would ride the loop several times, racking up nine to 12 miles. The Loiselles have come for the ride every year. In the past, the riders have won gold and finished second several times, Bernie said, proud of the group’s achievement. The smiles on the faces of most riders heading into the state park spoke well of the fun and exercise they were getting out of cycling, whether it was total dedication to the sport or just an occasional ride to have brunch.

in Weslaco. They like the friendly people, plus the great winter weather. Music is the life of most parties and there was plenty of it at appreciation day. That is what led to the friendship of Judy Minden, of Kansas, and Keith Churchill, of Illinois. The pair who stay at Lamplighter MH & RV Subdivision in Palmview, are involved in the various music jams around the area. Minden plays mandolin and guitar and Churchill is on the keyboard. Churchill, who has been in the RGV 20 years, loves music and likes it here. Minden, who says she is “a people watcher,” likes the weather and making friends. In the Valley, she can count on music,
From pg. 1 Jim and Roberta Swenson, from Minnesota, have been coming to the Valley for 15 years. Jim recounted, “We found it nice on our first visit and said maybe we should buy a place. Two weeks later we had a place.” They live at Siesta Village in Weslaco, down the street from Progreso’s newly crowned king and queen. They enjoy watching people and the “free stuff” at the event. That is similar to the tastes of their friends Jerry and Judy Freitag, also from the same city in Minnesota, who have been in the Valley for 14 years and stay at Country Sunshine Park
and a Superior mark at UIL area. They advanced to state competition in both events. They are under the direction of Emilio Cantu, one of La Joya ISD’s pioneer mariachi directors. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Fine Arts Office (located within the Performing Arts Center Complex), or at the door on the day of the event. Tickets will be sold Monday-Friday, March 26-April 6, from 9 a.m. - noon and 1-4 p.m. The school district offices will be closed March 30 and April 2. The Alejandro “Alex” H. Saenz Performing Arts Center is located at 604 N. Coyote Drive, La Joya. For more information call 956-3232898.

friends and sunshine. “One of the three is always available.” Five friends from Tropic Winds Resort in Harlingen, sat around a small table enjoying beverages on the blocked off main street of Progreso and sort of people watching. That included lots of color as entertainers moved past in the crowds toward the stage area, where they performed during much of the day. George Mueller, who spends summers in both Missouri and Wyoming, has been coming to the RGV for 18 years. He likes seeing people. Loren and Mary Voecks, from Minnesota have been in the Valley for 10 sea-
sons. They said they enjoy the RGV area, its people and the weather. Rocky Semmelrock, from Connecticut, has visited for the past eight years. He too likes people and the warm winter weather. Bill Galliher, from Minnesota, is in his fifth year of coming down. He loves the sun, he said. From the comments, it appears Winter Texans find the RGV a great place to spend the winter, where the sun beams brightly much of the time, the breezes are usually cooling, it’s easy to meet someone and lots and lots of the merchants and visitors are friendly folk.
Winter Texan friends from Tropic Winds Resort in Harlingen came for the Nuevo Progreso’s Tourist Appreciation Day. Enjoying some beverages are (from left) George Mueller, Loren and Mary Voecks, Rocky Semmelrock and Bill Galliher.
