From the Publisher Celebrations, Festivals and Voting
This week we will see a big lineup of community festivals and activities all Jim Brunson throughout the Rio Grande Valley – from Mission to Brownsville – including fall festivals, Halloween parties, and Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations. Of course, we’re all familiar with Halloween dances and parties, fall festivals and haunted houses. But I’d venture to say that many of us aren’t too familiar with the Mexican traditions behind the Day of the Dead celebration. Except, of course, those who have attended some of the Dia de los Muertos events that can shed a little light on the subject for the unacquainted. Dak’ ee si means the fall ceremony of celebration and the event is a way for the Native American tribe to share its culture and history with other tribes and non-natives. See POW WOW pg. 15
Winter Texans feel ‘safe’ in Mexican border town
Winter Texan friends from Tropic Winds Resort in Harlingen came for the Nuevo Progreso’s Tourist Appreciation Day in March. Enjoying some beverages are (from left) George Mueller, Loren and Mary Voecks, Rocky Semmelrock and Bill Galliher.
By Herb Moering Concern about border troubles don’t seem evident in at least one popular Mexican border town on the Rio Grande River. Nuevo Progreso, which is just a short walk or drive across the international bridge, has been a popular spot for tourists from the U.S. for decades. While the perception of trouble on the border may make news headlines in some border locations, the Winter Texans who come to the McAllen metro area and many full-time Texas residents still find Mexico’s Progreso to be a charming place to go shopping, enjoy a meal, get a manicure/pedicure and buy cheaper prescription drugs and liquor. And best of all, the visitors feel perfectly safe, according to Mary Kinsel, a Donna resident. “We have been coming here about 10 years and feel safe,” she said. Day of the Dead festivals and events planned By Henry Miller Halloween is traditionally known as a night of mischief, horror and costumes. Dia de los Muertos, also known as “Day of the Dead,” isn’t a Mexican version of Halloween, even though it does deal with the dead, and with calacas (skeletons) and calaveras (skulls), and there are plenty of sweets to be shared – usually decorated as calacas and calaveras. However, Dia de los Muertos is about celebrating life; specifically the lives of loved ones who have deceased. Originated in Mexico thousands of years ago with the Aztecs and others, but now celebrated all over Latin America, Dia De Los Muertos is recognized Nov. 1-2 (another similarity to Halloween’s Oct. 31 tradition and also during the Catholic faith’s All Saints Day on Nov. 1 and All Souls Day on Nov. 2). The traditions portray the belief that during this celebration those who have gone on to their eternal sleep awaken to celebrate with loved ones. Families will create personalized altars See FESTIVALS pg. 3

From pg. 1 rant and store on Main Street, she recalled one time when some kind of problem started “and the merchants sent us home. They protect us.” The others who were part of her group echoed her sentiments about safety, including her husband, Sherman. The couple, along with Frank Cueller and Janie Zamarripa, also of Donna, and Lico and Janie Rodriguez, from nearby Weslaco, come to Progreso about once a month on average. Lico is a businessman operating a body shop and Cueller has been a butcher for some 30 years. Enjoying a drink at a street café were Oscar and Deyaniva Sifuentes, sporting New England Patriots jerseys. The couple, from Alton, Texas have been coming just about every other weekend for the past several years. They don’t have any qualms about visiting the town regularly. Nuevo Progreso’s Arizona Restaurant was one of the stops for John and Wendy Colomb, who have been full-time residents for six years at Green Bay South Community Park in La Feria, where a lot of Packers fans from Wisconsin live. Wendy, who is a retired Spanish teacher from Racine, Wis., enjoys using the language. Wendy noted they come at least once and sometimes twice weekly. Sometimes See BORDER pg. 14

From pg. 1 have taken a more active role in trying to preserve their Mexican heritage and pass it down to younger generations, we have seen these celebrations and altar displays become more popular. Some of the museums report that their Dia de los Muertos events are better attended than any other they host throughout the year. If you’ve seen Disney’s movie “Coco” released in October-November 2017, you have a head start on learning about the culture behind the tradition. This entertaining, musical animated film portrays a 12-yearold Mexican boy who accidentally enters the Land of the Dead and there gains an appreciation for his family heritage as he tries to find his way back home. During his journey, he learns much about the traditions behind the annual celebration that honors those who have passed on before and helps forge bonds between the living and their deceased family members. If you want to learn more about the Mexican culture, or if you just want to enjoy the performances by authentic folkloric dancers – and enjoy the food and refreshments that come along with the celebration – then attend one of these events in your area. And, if you want to enjoy an entertaining animated film, rent the movie “Coco,” which was voted the best animated film of 2017 and was among the highest grossing films of the year with $807 million in revenues. You’ll not only have an entertaining evening, but you may also gain a little better appreciation for the Day of the Dead. It’s not the morbid day that some might think. VOTE Don’t forget to vote. Of course, there are many important races on the ballot, but in addition to the candidates running for office, Hidalgo County Drainage District #1 has a $190 million bond election on the Nov. 6 ballot. Early voting began Oct. 22 and continues through Nov. 2. The money is to be used for many different drainage projects all throughout the county. Some 38 of them are listed in the bond program information the district has provided. This summer, the county experienced flooding in many low-lying areas or areas with poor drainage. This occurred when some areas received up to 15 inches of rain over a seven-day period, with most of the rain pouring down on or about June 21. What compounded the situation in June was that the rains were so intense and widespread all across the Valley that the water had no place to go. Town halls have been held in many communities in recent weeks. If you missed them, you can view the 38 project locations and descriptions on the Hidalgo County Drainage District #1 website at http://www. hcdd1.org. For polling locations and times, visit the county elections department website. For Hidalgo County, Texas go to https://www. hidalgocounty.us/105/Elections-Department. From pg. 1 to celebrate the lives of these loved ones. These altars are not ones of worship but ones to remember their loved ones. Family members will adorn them with figurines, photos, candles, sugar skull masks, water and more. The water is meant to quench the thirst during the during the deceased’s long journey back to celebrate. The calavera Catrina is the most iconic figure in Dia de los Muertos. Murder, mystery and more at Brownsville Museum tour
Rumor has it that if anyone takes a toy from little Daisy Starck’s gravesite that she will come to your house and tickle your feet. These “horror” stories and many more will be shared as the Brownsville Heritage Museum presents its second, Murder, Mystery and Mayhem tour from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27. The museum is located at 1325 E. Washington St. Starck is widely considered the victim of the first auto-pedestrian accident in Brownsville in 1879. According to program director Ashly Guzman, Daisy was playing with her ball when it rolled out into the street. “She ran after it and was run over by a carriage,” Guzman said. The tour will explore the Old City Cemetery and make between 10 and 13 stops at different, and story-worthy, gravesites. Ghosts/actors will be at the different sites to share the stories of the graves’ inhabitants. They will tell tales of love, deceit and horror during this night of haunts, history and surprises. Tickets are $10 for non-members and $5 for members. There is a 25-person limit. The first tour was scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 20 and was sold out. For more information or to register call (956) 5481313. And don’t take any toys from little Daisy’s grave.

Wild By Nature by Luciano Guerra
As a life-long Valley resident, and as a wildlife photographer for nearly as long, I have visited, and photographed wildlife in, nearly all the nature centers across the Rio Grande Valley. My familiarity with these sites, and my appreciation for what each one has to offer, is why I will be featuring some of the top nature centers in the Valley here in the weeks to come. With more nature centers across the Valley than there are tail feathers on a Chachalaca, I will let the numbers speak for themselves by sharing some statistics about each of the Valley’s top birding hot spots. Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge in Alamo, Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park in Mission and Estero Llano Grande State Park in Weslaco have been the three top birding hot spots in Hidal-
go County for almost as long as they’ve been in existence. Based on the number of bird species that have been reported to eBird, the world’s largest biodiversity-related citizen science project with more than 100 million bird sightings submitted by birders each year, these three sites are among the top eight sites in Texas and the top 20 in the U.S. With 269 species of birds reported at Estero through mid-October of this year, it tops Santa Ana’s 260 species and Bentsen’s 223 species. The fact that Estero has had over 1,600 checklists submitted to eBird so far this year, while Santa Ana has had just over 1,000 and Bentsen Park has had less than 700, could account, at least in part, for Estero’s higher species count. However, its impressive checklist total is a pretty good indicator that Estero is the bird-
ers’ top birding site in Hidalgo County. So does this mean that Estero Llano Grande is the best birding site for you? Not necessarily. However, it would certainly be worth your time to visit www.wintertexantimes.com

Denny’s: The Ultimate place for Breakfast … and Lunch and Dinner Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Anytime is a great time to head over to Denny’s for a great-tasting meal. After my daughter’s volleyball game, we headed over to Denny’s for “breakfast.” Good choice! The look on my 14-year-old daughter’s face as she bit into her first Moons over My Hammy sandwich at the Denny’s located at 2301 W. University Dr. in Edinburg said it all. Her eyes closed, the corners of her mouth turned upward and, after a long and stressful day that included school and a huge volleyball match (they won), she relaxed – the sandwich became her comfort food. The sandwich is made with ham and scrambled eggs, topped with American and Swiss cheese, and placed between crunchy grilled sourdough bread.
But, like something your mom makes, it just can’t be replicated; there is no substitute. Denny’s has an incredible variety. There are burgers, steaks, chicken, sandwiches...the list goes on – even for dessert. But for me and Camilla, breakfast will always be king at Denny’s – 24 hours a day. Camilla’s reaction to the sandwich brought back memories of my first trip to a Denny’s in the early 1990s in Florence, S.C. The sandwich caught my attention because of the Betty Grable film “Moon Over Miami.” It immediately became my favorite menu item. Today, I have several favorites at Denny’s. This time I ordered the Ultimate Omelette. It was ultimate goodness. The three-egg omelet with crumbled sausage, bacon, fire-roasted bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, diced tomatoes and shredded cheddar cheese was a tasteful treat and a breakfast for royalty. Served with crispy hash browns and toasted wheat bread, this omelet is competing for my favorite Denny’s breakfast, along with about five other items. Denny’s was founded back in 1953 in Lakewood CA as Danny’s Donuts, in 1959 Danny’s Donuts renamed to Denny’s. The coupons in today’s edition of the Winter Texan Times are valid at any location in the Rio Grande Valley. Camilla and I will be sure to visit them quite often in the future, especially when we want breakfast – which is pretty much all the time.

OCTOBER 24, 2018 BORDER
From pg. 2 she comes with girlfriends. But the couple likes the restaurants in Progreso. When asked, Wendy said, “We do feel safe and have just done what we want to do, even going dancing at night.” John added, “You just need to be aware of your surroundings.” He also said that they have never had any trouble with the food when in eating out there. Oscar and Rose Billarreal usually come once a month from Harlingen to shop. They either walk or drive over the bridge. The latest trip involved groceries including avocados, crackers and a couple cases of pop. The couple said they feel safe all the time. Some shoppers came all the way from Raleigh, N.C. The group from Grace Church came to the Valley on behalf of Faith Ministries, of McAllen, which builds cinder block houses for the poor in Reynosa, Mexico. The church, which has been sending members for a week’s time annually over the last decade, usually includes a visit to Nuevo Progreso, according to Holly Cook, a member of the group. One visit included items they were taking back for reselling to raise funds for the area ministry. “We enjoy coming and feel very safe,” Cook noted. Businessman Larry Burgess, a longtime Alamo resident, says the news about
www.wintertexantimes.com
the Rio Grande Valley is being misconstrued when it comes to crime. “As far as Progreso goes, we go at least every two weeks and have never had a problem.” He and his wife, Sandra, usually take a vehicle across the bridge. Sandra, who likes to go Saturdays because of live music, said, “It’s very safe…and they have margaritas (for sale) on the street.” Larry said his wife was headed for the dentist on the next trip. In addition, the Valley is attractive because the cost of living is much less than most other areas in the U.S. Friends of the Burgesses, Jessie Dreher and her daughter, Denise Dressler, enjoy going to Progreso. Dreher is a Winter Texan from Kansas, living at Royal Palms Park in Alamo. Her daughter brings her down from Kansas. Another friend, Joann Lincoln, who is president of the Royal Palms Women’s Club, has been going to the border town since 1994 and finds not much has changed, except now there are federal authorities around to make sure the area is safe. The addition of more law enforcement is thought to be one of the reasons things are peaceful, according to Angel, an employee at Angel’s Restaurant, the oldest eatery in the town. He said there are federal troops from a station at the south edge of Progreso and the police, who come from Rio Bravo, are on the north side at the bridge entrance. See BORDER pg. 15

From pg. 14 Angel, who has been a resident of Progreso for 55 years, feels the criminal element is more interested in large cities than small towns where it’s too peaceful. He figures visitors feel safe because of the easy accessibility of being downtown as soon as one crosses the bridge over the river. “You can find anything you want within the first four blocks (of Main Street),” he stated. “The news doesn’t help too much,” said dentist Dr. Jorge Mustre, in commenting on the perception of what many Americans outside of the Rio Grande Valley have of the area. If problems persisted, people would not flock to the town from many places in the U.S. for work on their teeth at the numerous dental offices. The dental profession, of which he, his wife, Rocio, and their three grown children are all a part, plays a major role in the town’s economy. Among those who heard about the Mustre clinic was Jim Walker, a converted Texan living in La Feria, who, with his wife, Carolyn, came from Pennsylvania Amish country as visitors 10 years ago. The couple, who have been “steady customers” over the years, come once a week for food, drinks, to have a meal, meet new people and enjoy the weather. More than 1,000 people enter Progreso daily and that number increases on the weekends, according to Briseno.
A town association of merchants plans major celebrations for the American tourists every year. One of those events coming up soon is the Welcome Back Winter Texans, set for Dec. 7. The committee organizes it, arranging the music entertainment, the foods and other items provided by merchants on that Friday. A similar event takes place for the Winter Tourist Appreciation Day, which is always held on March 21 each year. The 43rd annual event next spring will include a program of officials from both sides of the border along with the announcements honoring “Mr. Tourist,” “Mrs. Tourist” and “Winter Texan,” of the year (usually a couple). The event includes a ceremony at the center of the international bridge. An overflow crowd can be expected at this event, which marks the end of the winter tourist season. The town’s committee held a motorcycle event on Oct. 12-13 and another will be next April. Both correspond to the bikers being at South Padre Island. There is also much interest in the May 5 Cinco de Mayo celebration, Dr. Martinez said. Dr. Martinez is anticipating continued growth in the numbers of Winter Texans coming to Texas that has been occurring in the last few years—and more Winter Texans visiting Nuevo Progreso to experience the good times to be had south of the border.

POW WOW
From pg. 1 There will be gourd dancing from 11 a.m. - noon and again from 5:30 p.m. - 6 p.m. There will also be intertribal dances throughout the day. Each type of dance has its own meaning. There are several opinions regarding the gourd dance, a dance that is used to honor a warrior. Many state that the dance originated with the Kiowa Tribe. The dance will be one of the featured dances at the day-long pow wow. The buffalo dance is known as “a ritual group dance of North American Indians imitative of the buffalo for cure, for success in the hunt, or as part of the sun-dance ceremony,” according to Merriam-Webster. The Free Dictionary online describes the snake dance as “any of various ceremonial dances of American Indian peoples in which snakes are handled or imitated by the dancers.” There will be more than 40 vendors selling native food, arts, crafts, beads, supplies, jewelry, dream catchers and food. “This event is a family affair – all ages are welcome to come and learn about the American Indian culture. Some dances are audience participation,” said Iris Soto, who coordinates the event with her husband Robert Soto, a Lipan Apache. “There will be food, arts and craft vendors, jewelry, beads, jewelry making supplies, cake walks, raffles and more.”
Bob Woolery, a Chickasaw/Cherokee, is the master of ceremonies. There will also be dancers/drummers from the Ponca and Lipan Apache tribes, among others. The Edinburg Folkloric Aztec Dancers dance team will also make a special guest appearance. “This is a way of keeping our heritage alive,” Robert Soto said previously. “The Lipan Apaches had a stronghold in the Valley. Starr County was especially our stronghold and then the western side of Hidalgo County. We want to let people know about our history and our culture and we want to celebrate life.”

Southern Anthem’s Mike Pausewang passes Mike Pausewang may have been behind the scenes of the wildly popular family band known as Southern Anthem, but he was as much of the driving force as his family stars on stage. Pausewang died at the age of 51 at his home on Aug. 20. Southern Anthem was named 2017-18 Family Vocal Group of the Year by the Valley Star Awards, a people’s choice-style award. The band regularly filled Winter Texan resort venues and were booked heavily for performances throughout the Valley. Due to Pausewang’s passing, the group will not be returning to the Rio Grande Valley this year, according to 17-year-old Mikaela Pausewang, lead singer and guitarist for the band. “We would like to say a sincere thank you to all the Winter Texans who gave us some of the most amazing seasons we could imagine in the Rio Grande Valley,” Mikaela Pausewang said in a statement to the Winter Texan Times. “The experiences that you made possible have changed our lives forever.” Mike Pausewang was born Aug. 15,
1967 in Temple, Texas. Survivors include his children Derek, Mikaela, Logan, Miranda and Emma Pausewang, and wife Wendy. Pausewang married Wendy Adams on July 31, 1993. According to his obituary, “He spent most of his adult life as a remodeler and was so dedicated to his craft that he started his own business. He wasn’t one who liked the bright lights or to be in the spotlight or on the stage. He knew, however, how to run a show, the lights, the setup and would always be seen quietly doing his job at the sound and lighting board, sometimes with his two youngest daughters Miranda and Emma sitting on his lap or by his side. “Our dad was the foundation we stood on. He supported us in every aspect of our lives and made possible our dream of traveling and performing,” Mikaela Pausewang said. “We will miss his words of encouragement and unconditional love every single day. Although we won’t be able to return to the Valley this season, we will carry the memories we made there in our hearts forever.”

Tupelo Kenyon Remembered Tupelo (Stephen) Kenyon, who formed the musical duo Laughing Bird in the late 70’s with his wife Janey Wing Kenyon, died June 22 after a bout with cancer. He died in his home in Story, Wyoming. Laughing Bird performed concerts from California to Florida annually, making stops in South Texas for Winter Texans here.
“Even though you’re hurting now, the hurting will not last. The strength you gain from such a pain, remains when it’s all past. Even this will pass away, like this life itself someday, And all that we take with us is the love we gave away.” −From Tupelo Kenyon’s song “All That We Take With Us” Kenyon produced and recorded countless local musicians in his music studio, Riversong. He would say he loved those sessions because of the musical camaraderie and shared creativity. He and Janey also loved to travel each winter, distancing themselves from the Wyoming snow to the palm trees all across the south. “It breaks my heart that we won’t be coming down anymore,” his wife Janey
told The Winter Texan Times from her Wyoming home. “We have been coming to Texas since 2003 and the Winter Texans have been so good to us. We’ve made so many good friends.” Janey added that she is not performing either, but has turned her attention to her glasswork, something she has dabbled in before, even bringing some of her pieces on their trips to sell. A guitar player first since a pre-teen, Kenyon expanded his abilities and could play and perform on a number of acoustic instruments, the most recent being the harp guitar. He wrote hundreds of songs, both instrumental and with lyrics, and recorded 16 CDs of original songs. “He was a really great musician and his compositions touched people,” Janey said. “The whole thing about it is that our shows and music and his compositions were to uplift and hopefully make people laugh and make them feel better. That was our whole point of performing.” Janey said that their website, www. tupelokenyon.com, which emphasizes “Personal Development Inspiration and Uplifting Music,” will remain online and people can still order books, CDs and other material. “We wanted to make people laugh,” Janey said. “We wanted to uplift people. He was such an amazing person.”
