Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Vol. 32, No. 07 © 2018 www.wintertexantimes.com Wednesday, November 28, 2018 Mission celebration kicks off Christmas season

The City of Mission will kick off the Christmas season with a festive celebration Friday, Nov. 30, with the traditional Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony beginning at 5:45 p.m. at the newly-renovated Leo Pena La Placita Park. The park is located in downtown Mission on Conway Ave. at Business 83, across from the H-E-B. The evening will feature a full evening of entertainment–South Texas style– including performances by the Mission Veterans Memorial High School Mariachi and Mission Parks & Recreation Folklorico. And visitors are sure to enjoy some traditional Christmas numbers performed by the Mission High School Choir and Baptist Temple with Tony Longoria. It will be a fun evening for all, as the little ones eagerly anticipate the arrival of Santa Claus on his…fire truck! Old Saint Nick will be giving out goodies to the children and posing for photos. And, to See MISSION pg. 5

Lighted Boat Parade at Port Isabel and SPI Saturday Captain Phil Calo and his Osprey Cruises boats “can light up Chicago” with the generators on them. They’re not going to do quite that, but it gives you an idea of what they can do with Christmas lights during the annual Port Isabel and South Padre Island Lighted Boat Parade. “We are fortunate to have that, it makes it a lot easier when we are putting lights and whatever pyrotechnics if needed,” he said. “Plus this is just a great event.” The annual Lighted Boat Parade begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1. The route begins at the South Point Marina in Port Isabel and there are designated viewing areas throughout the route. Judging of the boats will take place at the new Painted Marlin Restaurant, located at 202 West Whiting, right next to Jim’s Pier, located at 211 W. Swordfish St., South Padre Island. See BOAT pg. 5

Hidalgo Festival of Lights begins with parade Friday

Miss Hidalgo Ashley Villasenor is joined by cartoon characters on the Woody’s Roundup float during the Festival of Lights’ Illuminated Parade on Dec. 1, 2017 in Hidalgo.

If more than five million lights and nearly 500 lighted Christmas holiday-themed displays aren’t enough to draw visitors to the annual Hidalgo Festival of Lights, the illuminated nighttime parade, nightly trolley tours to see the lights, dinner and entertainment tour packages, the new Artisan Market and a lineup of exciting entertainment will give anyone plenty of reasons to visit and re-visit this year’s holiday celebration. The delightful festival officially begins with a nighttime parade starting at 6:50 p.m., Friday, Nov. 30 right in front of the Hidalgo City Hall, the hub of all festival activities. City hall is located at 704 E. Ramon Ayala Drive (formerly Texano Drive) in Hidalgo. The spectacular parade features illuminated floats, marching bands, performers from across the Rio Grande Valley and, of course, Santa himself with the Coca-Cola Polar Bear. Following the one-hour parade, there is so much to enjoy, including photos with See LIGHTS pg. 2

Brownsville Holiday Village lights up the season The Holiday Village in Brownsville just keeps growing and getting better and better each year. As the village opened – lights on for their ninth season – Bean Ayala, the emcee, announced there are 33 cottages on display this year – more than ever. The village is open daily, now through January 1. Admission is free. While the village is open during the day, the lights come on at 6 p.m., so for the best enjoyment of the cheerfully decorated – and lighted – cottages come by after 6 p.m. Food, drink and craft vendors will be at the village every weekend, and some week nights. Entertainers will also be performing in the pavilion throughout the holiday season. The Elf of the Shelf contest is back again this year. “There are many elves in the Holiday Village but there is only one Fritter!” Fritter is always holding a tiny box of Krispy Kreme donuts,” explained Ayala. Just like other Elves on the Shelf, FritSee VILLAGE pg. 4

Brownsville’s Holiday Village is now open daily, featuring 33 quaint cottages all decked out with different Christmas themes. Food, drink, crafts and entertainment add to the festive holiday atmosphere for all to enjoy.

FESTIVAL

From pg. 1 Santa at Santa’s Cottage, nightly, Nov. 30 to Dec. 23 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Also, located at the City Hall courtyard will be the Outdoor Holiday Artisan Market, nightly from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Nov. 30-Dec 30. No festival is complete without some tasty treats to eat. Local organizations will be set up to sell food in the food court, offering tacos, hot dogs, corn in a cup, doughnuts and other goodies. The trolley tours, a huge favorite among visitors, begin Saturday, Dec. 1 and continue through Dec. 30. These tours will take guests on a narrated tour of the city’s many lighted displays to see the more than five million lights and nearly 500 displays. Dinner & Entertainment The Festival of Lights offers three ways to enjoy the festival and tour the lighted displays. First, guests can do a self-guided tour, free of charge, each night, anytime from 6 p.m.-10 p.m., Dec. 1-30. Or, start at Hidalgo City Hall and take a guided trolley tour of the lights for a small fee. However, the best option is the Dinner & Entertainment Package that includes dinner, VIP seating for the evening’s performance on the Christmas Stage and a narrated tour of the lights by train. The cost for the package starts at $12 per person. Choose from dinner package times of 5:15 p.m. or 6:15 p.m. Dinner includes

roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, corn, dinner roll, dessert, and tea, coffee or water. Reservations for the dinner may be made by calling 956.843.5311 or email to specialevents@cityofhidalgo. net. The dinner packages are available Dec. 1 through Dec. 19 on a first-come, first-serve basis. Seating is limited, so early reservations are recommended. Proceeds benefit local non-profit organizations. Entertainment The city hall courtyard features dozens of illuminated displays and a stage where performers provide entertainment every night, beginning Saturday, Dec. 1 through Dec. 30. On Dec. 1, the evening entertainment will be a show by Creative Studios at 7 p.m., followed by Grupo Folklorico Juvenil de Palmview at 8 p.m. Sunday. On Dec. 2, Mission Parks & Recreation Folklorico performers take the stage at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Each night will feature these or other local talented performers taking the stage. However, it has become a tradition to invite the famous Estudiantina de San Luis Potosi to perform at the annual festival. They are invited as special guests of the Festival of Lights, coming all the way from San Luis Potosi, Mexico. This highly talented group of students will perform Dec. 15 through Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. nightly. Call 956.843.5311 for more information or to make dinner reservations.

VILLAGE

From pg. 1 ter is being sent to keep an eye on the boys and girls here. Every night, from Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve, he flies back to the North Pole to tell Santa who’s being naughty and who’s being nice! You can find him hiding in a different cottage each day and enter to win some great prizes from Krispy Kreme. Here is how to have fun entering the contest: First, find Fritter’s hiding spot. Then take a picture in front of the cottage where you found him and post the photo on YOUR Facebook page using #IFOUNDFRITTER. That’s all; you’ve entered the contest. Now go out and have some fun. See who in your group will be the first one to find Fritter’s hiding spot tonight. Hint: He hides in different cottages night after night. All of the Elf on the Shelf contest rules are posted on the village website at www.holidayvillagebrownsville.com. Santa Claus will be available for complimentary photos too. He’ll be at the gazebo Fridays and Saturdays from 6-9 p.m. and Sundays from 6-8 p.m. Be sure to bring your camera or smartphone to take photos to share with family and friends. Come enjoy the holiday season with us at the Brownsville Holiday Village.

We’re also going to have an emcee where everyone will be able to hear him announce what’s going on.” The parade is part of Lights of South Padre Island, which includes a Tree Lighting Ceremony, Christmas Parade, Breakfast with Santa and a Holiday Sandcastle Village. The Sandcastle Village will be available for viewing from Nov. 30-Dec. 16 at the South Padre Island Convention Center. “We participate in this event every year that we can,” said Calo, a Syracuse, N.Y. native who has been working with Osprey Cruises for 23 years. “Our boat is open to the public and you can ride in the parade on it. VMHS Harlequins bring ‘Mamma Mia’ to Mission

One of Broadway’s longest-running musicals, “Mamma Mia” is now coming to Mission under the direction of Mission Veterans Memorial High School drama director James Hodgson. The VMHS Harlequins are producing the show with show dates set for Nov. 29, 30, Dec. 1, 6, 7 and 8 at the Veterans Memorial High School Performing Arts Center. Showtimes are 7 p.m., nightly, and doors open at 6:30 p.m. This lighthearted musical and dance showcase promises to be the biggest show in the Valley this season. “Mamma Mia” has delighted audiences worldwide and has been a fan favorite on Broadway for 14 years. The Harlequins have an 18-year tradition of being the first to bring big time shows to the Valley, including “Chicago,” “Sweeney Todd,” “The Great Gatsby,” and “Hairspray,” as director and instructor James Hodgson brings out the best in his talented students, putting together the compete production entirely by students. The staging, the props, costumes, lights, sound – everything is done by the students.

“It’s all student generated. We don’t go out for anything. The sets – the kids and I build them ourselves,” Hodgson said as he took a break during one of the cast’s daily rehearsals. The cast of 40 students, has been rehearsing for three months – working hard on the music, the singing and the choreography and is set to captivate their audiences with outstanding vocals, sets and dances. Sam Gonzalez (junior), who plays in a lead role as Sam Carmichael, says “This year’s production has much more choreography and dancing” than last year’s production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” But after three months of practice it has become easier for the cast. Senior Chelsey Garcia, who plays the part of Tanya in this year’s show, has played a role in each of her four years in high school. “We’ve done “Grease,” “Chicago,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” and now “Mamma Mia,” and my favorite of them all I can say is “Mamma Mia” – for sure with all See MAMMA MIA pg. 18

VSO ‘Touch of Frost’ returns Dec. 7

A “Touch of Frost” is in the forecast for the Rio Grande Valley. But, before you rush outside to cover the plants and bring the animals indoors, this is a musical “Touch of Frost,” as the Valley Symphony Orchestra prepares to present its holiday concert Dec. 7 at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. The concert, featuring beloved music for the holiday season, is the third in the VSO’s 2018-19 season. Joined by the Orchestra Chorale directed by Dr. David Means, the symphony will perform many seasonal favorites, including “Sleigh Ride,” selections from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker,” and Handel’s “Messiah.” Soloist Nereida Garcia (soprano) will perform Schubert’s “Ave Maria” and David Sadlier (tenor) will perform Finkelstein’s “Yah Ribon.” As part of the evening’s events, attendees will have the opportunity to meet Santa and view the holiday lights and tree displays at both the McAllen Performing Arts Center and the McAllen Convention Center. “The holidays are a time to connect with family and to hear music that we look forward to enjoying all year,” said Katy Coy, executive director of the Valley Symphony Orchestra. “We invite the community to celebrate with us and experience some of the most beautiful songs of the season performed by our incredible orchestra and chorale.” Tickets start at $39. To purchase tickets, visit the McAllen Convention Center Box Office Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. or online at www.valleyorchestra.org. Museum of South Texas History tells story of RGV

“One of the best ways for new Winter Texans to learn about the area where they are wintering is to make a visit to the Museum of South Texas History in Edinburg,” said museum Executive Director Shan Rankin. The museum chronicles the Valley’s history from prehistoric times when the Mossasurs (sea dinosaurs that inhabited the area now known as the Rio Grande Valley when it was under the ocean). In a later period, giant mammoths roamed the area after the land rose out of the water to become vast prairies. Come to the museum to find out where the mammoth bones for the museum’s mammoth exhibit were discovered. The museum’s prehistoric view continues through the time of the Coahuiltecan Indians, when 50 tribes roamed the area looking for food. Things changed with the coming of the Spanish conquistadors in the 1500s. Most of the area’s early development was to the south in Mexico, although there was an unsuccessful attempt to settle along the river in the 1500s. Evidence of Spanish influence can be found in other ways.

The museum has a replica of the hull of one of the ships used by the Spaniards. It also has another display showing how horses were transported on ships in slings during times of bad weather to keep them from breaking their legs. And there are artifacts from the Spanish galleons that sunk during a hurricane in 1554 near Padre Island. The ships were loaded with bars of silver and gold mined in Mexico being transported back to Spain. One of the rarest shipments were small bugs, cochineal, that the Spaniards discovered made a bright red dye when crushed. Rankin said red was the royal color and no one else could wear it. No one could create as bright of a red as the Spaniards could with their “secret ingredient” brought back from the New World. Jose de Escandon led a successful colonization attempt where 13 colonies were established although not all survived. All but Laredo were on the south side of the Rio Grande because the north side of the river is higher and more difficult to irrigate, making it unsuitable for farming. The north side was designated as See HISTORY pg. 17

When the Winter Texan Times visited, we ordered two of their popular meals: fajita tacos with queso fresco and their fish tacos. Our server told us we had arrived on “Taco Tuesday” where tacos cost only $0.50 each at the bar. Patrons can choose from fajitas, fish or shrimp. Another bar special is their $0.50 shrimp, served from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays. Wednesdays the special is half price appetizers. Thursdays there are $0.50 oysters served deep fried or on the

half shell. Beginning Dec. 17, patrons can enjoy these snacks while listening to a Winter Texan entertainer favorite, Cactus Willie between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Pirate’s Landing also offers lunch specials Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Our server brought us a couple to sample. My favorite was the bread bowl filled with broccoli cheese soup. This is a new item on the menu, which the server said has been very popular. She also brought a fajita-stuffed potato filled to the brim with fajitas sitting on a base of sour cream and cheese. Both entrees come with a fresh garden salad or a medley of grilled vegetables. Other lunch entrees include

Wild By Nature by Luciano Guerra

Birding has undergone many changes over the years. The fact that it’s now called birding, as opposed to birdwatching, is one of the most obvious changes. However, a change that has had a much more significant impact on the hobby is the ability of birders to share their sightings with other birders online. In years past, birders were limited to word of mouth as a way of spreading the news of interesting and/or rare bird sightings with fellow birders. Thanks to the world-wide-web, birders now have many more options for sharing information about such sightings with others. I am a frequent user of eBird, a Cornell University website that has grown to become the world’s largest biodiversity-related citizen science project with more than 100 million bird sightings submitted by birders each year. It is an online database of bird observations providing scientists, researchers and amateur naturalists with real-time data about bird distribution and abundance provided in most part by

birders themselves. So while birders help eBird by submitting their sightings in the form of checklists, eBird helps birders by compiling and providing the data in these reports in such a way as to make it possible for birders to search by species, by region and/or by birding hotspots. Therefore, if a birder wants to know where he or she might be able to see a specific species of bird, all he or she has to do is to search eBird by species. Or if a birder wants to know what species of birds have been seen in a particular state, county or even at a specific birding or nature center, over the past month, year or even since eBird began compiling this data, then he or she can do an eBird region and/or Hotspot search. For birders who want to be alerted whenever a rare bird species, such as the Roadside Hawk pictured here, is seen in a particular region, they can sign up for eBird’s daily e-mail alerts. I receive daily e-mails from eBird with rare bird sightings in Hidalgo and Cameron counties.

That way I know if any rare birds have been reported in these two counties simply by checking my e-mails on a daily basis. In addition, these e-mails provide me with the number of different reports there were of any particular bird species, the name or names of the people reporting them, the exact location(s) of these sightings, the day and time of the sightings and any additional comments the person submitting the sighting felt were pertinent. In order to receive these e-mails and to submit your own sightings, you must create an eBird account. Doing so is free of charge and only takes a few minutes. To do so, visit the eBird website at www. ebird.org. Upcoming Nature Events and Activities • Resaca de la Palma State Park (1000

WINTER TEXAN TIMES HISTORY

From pg. 12 ranchland, while farms and cities such as Reynosa, Guerrera, Mier, and others were set up on the south side. The 1800s brought war to the region. Between 1810 and 1820 Mexico revolted against Spain, eventually winning its freedom. In 1836, Texas revolted against Mexico, claiming much of the land north of the Rio Grande. After Texas joined the United States in 1845, the United States-Mexican War was fought from 1846-1848. The war started between Port Isabel and Brownsville. Then came the Civil War from 1860 to 1865. The Rio Grande played an important role in the war when steamships operating under Mexican flags moved Confederate goods out of Texas headed for markets in Europe to generate much-needed money

for the Confederacy. Then came the days of early ranch settlement. People began moving into the area between the Nueces and Rio Grande to claim and settle the land. The era of large ranches like the King Ranch began. It was also a time of bandit raids. The Texas Rangers were sent in to bring order to the area and to protect the settlers from bandit raids. The United States sent 70,000 troops to the Valley to control the borders and protect against the bandits. The early 1900s was a time of new technology such as irrigation systems that could turn ranchlands into farmland, sparking an agricultural boom in the Rio

Grande Valley. This was accompanied by the coming of the railroads to the Valley, making shipping agricultural products north possible. With these developments, land developers advertised the area to farmers in northern states, arranging excursion trains to bring them down to South Texas to see for themselves the fertile soil and mild climate that made it possible to plant crops year-round. During World War II, the Valley became a major provider of food and fiber, taking its place as a major region of Texas contributing to the wellbeing of the state

and country. Rankin invites everyone to come visit the museum to learn more about the area’s history. Entrance fees are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and students and $5 for children, ages four to 12. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. MOSTHisory is located at 200 N. Closner in Edinburg. Check out the new exhibit “Edinburg: Then and Now” that opened Nov. 18. The annual Christmas “Noche Buena” will be held Dec. 9 from 1 to 5 p.m. It is a look at Mexican Christmas traditions including Posada, the reenactment of Joseph and Mary looking for a place to sleep and have their baby. Be sure to enjoy some hot chocolate, posale, tamales and pan dulce while there. Outside there will be vendors in the courtyard holding a Christmas market.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com www.wttrgv.com Chanukah Concert MAMMA MIA From pg. 6 my heart,” Garcia said with enthusiasm. Ali Garza, a talented sophomore, is playing the lead female role as Sophie in this year’s show, and her enthusiasm is literally infectious – both on and off stage. Ali said, “Oh, my goodness! It’s so much fun. Everyone is so happy. And playing Sophie, she’s such a ray of sunshine. I love this play and I love the music and the dancing and the staging. Everything is just so exciting, right down to the lights. I’m so excited and I can’t wait to show it off. “This if probably one of the best performances we’ve ever put on. It’s a wonderful story, and the music pulls it all together…. It’s going to be great and we’re going to put on an amazing show!” Mr. Hodgson said, “Come see ‘Mamma Mia’ here in Mission. You don’t have to go to the civic center and pay $100 a person. We’re bringing that level of production here, so the people of Mission can see the production for only $5 or $10 for a really great show.” Tickets are available at the door or at the VMHS front office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting Nov. 26. Seating is limited. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for students. The high school is located at 700 East 2 Mile Line, Mission. The front office entrance is on 2 Mile Line. The entrance to parking for the Performing Arts Center is on Mayberry Road. Call 956323-3000 for information.

& Festival planned

The annual Chanukah Concert and Festival will be celebrated Wednesday, Dec. 5 at Archer Park in downtown McAllen. The festival begins at 5 p.m. and a concert by the world-acclaimed Jewish band 8th Day will begin at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Chanukah, an alternative spelling for Hanukkah, is the Jewish eight-day holiday commemorating the victory of the Jews “against Greek persecution and religious oppression,” according to torah. org. This year, Chanukah is celebrated Dec. 2-10. The band 8th Day is a popular American Jewish pop band originating from Los Alamitos, Calif, formed by brothers Shumel and Bentzion Marcus in 2004. The band has produced eight albums, with their album entitled “Slow Down” reaching #1 on iTunes World Music chart, #8 on Billboard’s Heatseekers, and #11 on the Billboard Top 100 selling World Music Albums, according to the website my8thday.com. The group has performed in concerts in Australia, Europe, Israel, Asia, South Africa, Canada, the Carribbean Islands and all across the U.S. They will also be performing at the National Chanukah Menorah Celebration in Washington, D.C. on Dec. 2.

RGV Concert Band to perform Christmas concert

pr hiro act

Clinic ic

Martin C

The Rio Grande Valley Concert Band performed its first concert at Fiesta Village in Mission on Feb. 15, 1998. They booked a few more that year after that one. Twenty-one years later, the RGV Band, mostly made up of Winter Texans – and with a few musicians still from that original group – is preserving and performing “lovely music,” as one review about that band stated. Since those first days, the group has grown – there have been as many as 65 musicians, and membership has stayed steady at about 60 for the past few years. While not all of the band’s members have made it to the Valley from their northern homes, the ones already here are moving full speed ahead in preparation for their annual Christmas concert at 3 p.m., Dec. 9 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, located at 1105 W. Fern Ave., in McAllen. “We’re going to have several traditional Christmas songs and some that are popping and a couple of rock Christmas pieces,” said conductor Gene Goede. “We have a pretty good library of pieces we can play and the crowd usually enjoys it.” Goede, a Minnesota native, is in his 11th year as conductor but his roots with the band go all the way back to the group’s second season as a trumpet player.

RGV Concert Band will perform a Christmas concert on Dec. 9 at Our Savior Luthern Church in McAllen. “We started out with 12 members in 1998 and now there are just about 60 and they come from 17 or 18 different states and we have a few from Canada,” Goede said. “They are a strong group. It’s interesting because some will play when they go back home; some will only play here.

We’ve had some that hadn’t played for 30 years and they get their instrument out and started up again. “It’s kind of like riding a bike. You never really forget. You just have to get yourself back in shape to do it well again.” Currently, the band is seeking musi-

cians for the clarinet and percussion sections. Goede says there isn’t a lot of turnover in the band but it happens. When the Christmas show is over, the RGV Band is far from done for the year, however. They have six different shows this year scheduled at Winter Texan resorts. Show time will be 3 p.m. for each of the shows. Goede said the music variety is wider and goes from some rock music, such as “Rockin Around the Clock Tonight,” to relaxing, like a library full of legendary flugelhorn and trumpet player Chuck Mangione. The six concerts scheduled for Winter Texan resorts include (all begin at 3 p.m.): Jan. 6 – Llano Grande Park, Mercedes Jan. 20 – Snow to Sun, Weslaco Feb. 3 – Alamo Palms, Alamo Feb. 17 – Aladdin Villas West, Mission March 3 – Casa del Sol, Donna March 10 – Paradise Resort Estates, Pharr “We try to do a real variety, not just easy polkas and waltzes,” Goede said. “We have quite a library and we’ll do marches, overtures, show tunes and several different arrangements.” There is no fee for the Dec. 9 Christmas performance at Our Savior Lutheran Church. Donations will be accepted.

Snow to Sun hosts annual drive to benefit Rainbow Room

A look around the tiny room speaks volumes. There’s baby food and diapers, backpacks and school supplies, clothing and bathing necessities. Everything is neatly organized to grab in a moment’s notice. There are also toys, stuffed animals and comfort items. Comfort is what’s needed most when walking into this room. These items are here for when a child is taken from his or her home and to safety by Child Protective Services. This is the Rainbow Room and for many children, it is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Rainbow Room is an emergency resource center founded by First Lady Laura Bush that allows caseworkers to offer tangible help to families in need. Its walls are painted with bright designs; its shelves overflow with new toys and clothing - just like a retail boutique. All products are available for caseworkers to bridge the gap for children who come into protective care with nothing more than the clothing on their backs. Snow to Sun Park is a huge supporter of the Rainbow Room, donating items year-round. But when Christmas comes, the park moves into high gear, collecting toys, delivering blankets and looking out for others in their commu-

nity. “The park is filling 102 stockings for those children,” said Jeanne Fears, of Davenport, Iowa who, along with her husband Gary, has been returning to the park for the past 12 years. “These stocking may be all they get for Christmas.” Since the park residents are working with caseworkers, they never see the child who receives the stockings but “we trust that they get something that pleases them,” Jeanne said. “Whatever they get from the park might be all they get for Christmas.” CPS will give a list of ages and gender to the park. They can’t give our any more information due to safety precautions. But those who donate will stuff those stockings until they are ready to burst. “Some people will also buy gifts that are just way too big for the stocking so we make sure what the stocking and the gifts stay together. “These children are oftentimes taken out of their homes in the middle of the night – maybe because of domestic abuse or drug problems – and they are brought to the rainbow room to try and give them a little comfort. They don’t know what’s happening and they’re just frightened,” Jeanne said. “They get fed

They’re given a toy and a blanket or quilt and will stay there until they are put in a foster home, usually within a day.” According to Jeanne, Bubba and Frida Clark started the community partnership with the Rainbow Room years ago but have since moved away and the Fears were asked if they would take over. Gary Fears was a junior high middle school teacher for “a couple dozen years,” as he likes to say. Jeanne remained in the business world. It’s a great 1-2 combination for this volunteer effort. “We have never met any of the kids. There is no contact and can’t be any

contact,” Jeanne said. “But I went to a meeting and just found out how generous so many of these foster people are – if a mother has nothing, she still might take in someone else’s children. If a mother goes to prison another mother will take in her children. There’s so much generosity.” The Rainbow Room accepts donations and is always looking for volunteers. See BENEFIT pg. 22
