Tip O Texas loves Steven May and the Southern Knights

While the hustling and bustling of pre-Christmas preparations were over, activity at Tip ‘O Texas RV Resort in Pharr was going full swing the day after Christmas. Card games were at near capacity in most of the rooms reserved for those competitions, the pool had a small group of people milling about and the billiards room was at full speed with eight-ball, stipes and solid or other games being played on every table. Fred Renk, owner of the Santa Maria Bullring in La Gloria, announced the 2019 bullfight season opens Jan. 12 “with a magnificent card (bloodless bullfight) featuring four of the top matadors on the North American continent.” Heading the card will be the famous top sword of Mexico, Manolo Martinez, known as the “Mexicano of Gold.” Martinez is the last of the Martinez dynasty See BULLFIGHT pg. 7

Gearing up for the Golden Age Olympics

by Roberto Ontiveros Celebrating its 39th annual Golden Age Olympics, the city of McAllen invites anyone aged 50 and up to compete in a series of events that offer everything from bowling to bake-offs. The GAO started in 1983 with just three events. Today they offer approximately 30 different competitions. The games, which run from Jan. 7 to Feb. 28, reflect the interests of the Rio Grande Valley’s growing Winter Texan community. “We have events all across the board, anything from card games, Poker, Cribbage, Hearts, to swimming,” explains Stephanie Valdez, who has been in charge of the Golden Age Olympics for the past two years. With 1,729 individual participants registered in last year’s events and 4,406 people involved in its competitions, attendance for these winter games is impressive and, according to Valdez, always growing. The Mission Historical Museum held a tour of historic sites in Mission on Wednesday, Dec. 12. The tour was very well received, according to museum tour coordinator Lisa Price, so another tour has been scheduled for Jan. 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. The December tour was led by Mission native and architect Manuel Hinojosa. Two van loads of people toured sites beginning with the Tom Landry Mural. Tom Landry, who was coach of the Dallas Cowboys for 29 years, was a home town boy that Mission remembers with pride. Bill and Gen Long, who lived in Mission many years and had businesses downtown, commissioned Hinojosa to paint the mural, which was dedicated September 18, 1995, after taking a year to complete. Coach Landry was present for the dedication that year along with several Dallas Cowboys players. The mural shows highlights from his life from his birth in Mission in 1924 and his years playing quarterback for Mission High School, winning See MUSEUM pg. 4

From pg. 1 Valdez stresses that since the activities cover everything from birdwatching to shuffleboard, anyone, whether “mobile or not,” can definitely join in the fairs and festivities. The games, which take place in parks and venues across the city, can be as educational as they are entertaining. Valdez singles out “The Great Chase” as an example of an event that serves to introduce Valley visitors to the charms of the City of Palms. In the scavenger huntlike game, teams made up of two men and two women are given clues that take them all around McAllen as they race to snap shots of the city. When they are done, “we go through all of their pictures to make sure that they have gone to the correct location and then they will get a medal as a team.” Participants enjoy “getting to learn the city a little more as they are driving through.” The Bike Tour, which has three hundred registrants a year, serves as a recreational way to learn about the famous bird-life of the Valley. Participants in the tour bring their own bikes then form riding groups that travel around the path at Bentsen State Park and in the process, “they’ll actually get to experience some of the birds there and nature.” Aside from the Bike Tour there is a

team event called the “Bird-a-Thon” which is held at the McAllen Nature Center. Participants are given a piece of paper and asked to seek out and identify the birds on the list. “There are trails in the McAllen Nature Center and the team will go ahead and walk along the trails and describe what they’ve seen,” explains Valdez. As McAllen’s Parks and Recreation Department is always looking for ways to improve its Golden Age Olympics, competitors are encouraged to voice their ideas and concerns at a wrap-up meeting that takes place a week after the awards ceremonies. “So that if Louise Richard, from Alberta, Canada, tosses a metal ball there were any issues during the 2018 Golden Age Olympics Petanque Tournaor they wanted to try ment at Pleasant Valley. something new, then we invite them to come sit with us at the Valdez. and to some serious discussion regarding the amount of chips passed out during the poker tournaments. Participants in past events, which run the gamut from horseshoes to sudoku, have expressed gratitude over the Golden Age games. “They really do love it; it keeps them active and this is something that they get to experience not only as an individual,” says Valdez, who is heartened by the positive responses to the events as well as the enthusiasm of the competitors. “There are so many different participants with so many different views,” she says, adding, “and you get to see them returning and get to see them really excited because they have been practicing all year round for their billiards tournament or their shuffleboard tournament and they’re ready to win gold.” Entry Fee - First event : $7 per person. All events thereafter: $5. Some events may require additional fees. Register at the Las Palmas Community Center at 1921 N. 25th, Lark Community Center at 2601 Lark, or Palm View Community Center at 3401 Jordan, in McAllen. Registration must be received one week prior to each event unless noted. Contact McAllen Parks and Rec at 956681-3333 for full registration details. Younger brothers Joseph and Ammon play the drums and keys and Zachary plays electric guitar. Although they did not perform in the Valley last season, the Redhead Express family looks forward to coming down this season to the people who have received them so well in the past – even naming them the Valley Star Awards’ Family Band of the Year. “We’re excited about coming back to the Valley,” Kendra said. “The people are wonderful, the weather is great, and we have a great time.” The group will be performing only three shows in the RGV this season. And who knows if they’ll be back next year as the band grows in popularity. Redhead Express will perform Jan. 14 at Winter Ranch, Alamo, phone 956-7834587; Jan. 18 at Oleander Acres, Mission, phone 956-585-9093; and Jan. 21 at Victoria Palms in Donna, phone 956-7823263. From pg. 1 park had people out enjoying the warm weather walking their dogs or driving around in golf carts. And in the main ballroom, Steven May and the Southern Knights kept an audience of close to 200 on their feet, dancing the night away to country, waltzes, polkas and little rock-n-roll. “I really didn’t know what to expect,” May said of the holiday crowd, right before someone walked up and introduced himself, telling May that he should compete on “The Voice.” “This is a good crowd. I enjoy coming here.” May definitely has a following. Annette and John Autry came from Edinburg to dance and listen to the band and said they will follow them whenever they can. “He has an amazing voice,” Annette said. “And he can really rip it on the guitar.” Ben and Ada Toubner reside in Val Verde RV Park and were staying for their final night in the Valley for “round one.” They were heading back to their other home in Abilene – but said they would be back in February. They just needed “take care of the other house,” Ben said. “We love to get out dancing, any chance we get,” Ada said. “We really enjoy all the different entertainment and love hearing them perform. Honestly, we already can’t wait to get back.” Toward the end of the first set, May announced that they were going to play for that “Waterfall dance.” This dance is mainly for singles; men will line in a single formation line up on one side of the room while ladies will line up on the other. They’ve had a great time so far.” in the U.S.A. Mario Ordaz and his famed horse “Wapo” will lead the opening procession and perform after the bullfight. The bulls are the 1000-pound, bighorned animals of the famous ranch of ‘El Colminar Viejo’, Renk said as he described the danger these brave bullfighters face as they step into the ring with only a red cape and their skills for protection. CORRECTION: This article was published in the Dec. 27 edition of the Winter Texan Times with the wrong show schedule. We apologize to Tavie Spivey and to our readers for the error. The show schedule published with this article is the correct one. When Tavie Spivey entered the U.S. Army, it was during a time when women had two choices – go for administration or go for medical. “I chose administration,” Spivey said. “Then I went to a position in recruiting. That seemed to be my niche for 12 years.” Spivey spent 27 years in the Army, partly during the Gulf War. She said recruiting during a war is difficult. “Nobody wants to sign up during a war.” But Spivey’s first love – before, during and after the military – has always been singing. “I would sing to anybody who

Midwesterners yearning for a taste of home – and anyone else looking for authentic Chicago-style pizza and other tasty dishes – simply must head over to Scalisi’s Chicago Style Pizza & More. They’re located at 912 E. Nolana Loop in Pharr. Owner Patty Scalise says the family moved from Chicago several years ago. When they decided to open a family restaurant, their passion was to serve authentic Chicago style foods. “It tastes like home,” said Barb Stanford, a former Winter Texan who recently moved to the Rio Grande Valley from Chicago. “The lamb gyro is absolutely authentic.” Her son, Tim, said he likes the Chicago combo sandwich on Gonnella bread. He says it is just like those back home. Chef Carl “Chuck” Scalise makes a fresh Chicago-style dough for the pizzas and makes the sauce from scratch. The pizza is cut in squares, Chicago-style. The restaurant offers variety of pizzas including “Scalisi’s Deluxe,” which includes one meat with an array of fresh vegetables. Or try the “Super Deluxe Four-meat Pizza.” Their Margherta pizza features fresh tomatoes and mozzarella cheese. There are a other varieties, all available in the traditional Chicago deep dish style crust, thin and crispy crust, or hand tossed crust. Scalisi’s also serves a variety of sandwiches, including the popular Italian beef sandwich, chicken parmigiana, and others. Another favorite is the Chicago-style hotdog with true Vienna sausages with poppy seed buns. Look for authentic Maxwell Street dogs as well, served with celery salt, true Chicago style. Burgers are also available. Of course, their pastas are popular, including the colorful spicy penne chicken pasta which is a favorite among Winter Texans. The spaghetti and meatballs are homemade. Look for ravioli, calzones and strombolis. They serve a variety of fresh salads including Caesar salad, wedge salad, portabella mushroom salad and the favorite Caprese salad with fresh tomatoes and mozzarella cheese. I Look for traditional desserts like the Mascarpone and ricotta cheese-filled Cannoli and cheesecake.

Valley Star Award winner Helen Russell returns

The 2018 winner of the Valley Star Awards “Best Small Band Variety Show,” Helen Russell and Company, is in demand with a very full schedule of shows at the RV resorts in the Rio Grande Valley this season. From country to bluegrass to classic rock to gospel, Helen Russell said she strives to make sure the audience enjoys their show. She said they pride themselves in “giving 100 percent, whether there are 50 people in the audience or 300.” Regarding being voted “Best Small Band Variety Show” last season, Russell said, “That was only our second year and we didn’t think we had a following big enough to win that award. We felt really honored, especially since we had only been here one season prior. It has been awesome. It’s more and more like coming home every year.” Russell remembers music being a part of her family ever since she was a child, when her parents would travel to entertain. They encouraged her to sing and learn to play multiple instruments starting at the age of 6. Russell participated various bands as a teenager, until her dream of being a fulltime musician came true at the age of 18 when she was offered an entertainment position with Lee Mace’s Ozark Opry, a historic, Branson-style show that ran for 53 years where she was a featured vocalist and musician for 19 seasons. It was at this show

that she met her best friend and husband Elvis, who shares her love for music and entertaining and now they travel the United States as Helen Russell & Company. Their entertaining shows not only include a wide range of music, but also a little comedy and a lot of audience participation. There’s also plenty of impersonations of entertainers such as Reba, Cher, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and more. While this may be just their third year, fans who have seen their show before will be pleased to see a different show this year. “We pride ourselves on bettering ourselves all the time and by never thinking we’ve got it made,” said Russell, who resides with her husband the remainder of the year in Osage Beach, Mo., when they’re not traveling. “We don’t do the same show from season to season because we want people to see something different. We play a lot of different music, we have a wonderful tribute to our veterans, and people will focus in on what they enjoy. “If it wasn’t for the people who come out to see us, we wouldn’t get to do what we’re doing. So we want to make everyone happy and have a good time. We are blessed to be here.” Here are some of her upcoming shows, dances and music, but there’s more to come, so watch for her ads in the Winter Texan Times for the latest schedules.

Ron Hoover plans huge Open House event

Ron Hoover RV & Marine Center in Donna, Texas will host a huge Open House event on Thursday and Friday, Jan. 10 and 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. The annual open house celebration has become one of the most popular events in the Rio Grande Valley each January, drawing thousands of people attending the event – and for good reason. Ron Hoover rolls out the red carpet during this annual appreciation event that is not only customer appreciation, but also an invitation to everyone to come out and see their enormous selection of RVs, boats, golf cars and ATVs. The Donna location has 12 acres filled with inventory, plus a 3-acre overflow lot that has still more RVs. Their lineup of RVs includes everything from pop-ups to Class A motorhomes. Highlights of this year’s open house include free food and beverages, free snow cones, free T-shirts music, many door prize drawings throughout the day, plus a free grand prize drawing for a free golf cart or a new RV. What more could there be? RGV Vipers representatives will be on hand giving away free tickets, and free health screenings will be available during the open house. In addition, Ron Hoover will be offer-

ing a flea market-style sale of many miscellaneous items – RV parts and supplies – at rock bottom prices. Great bargains. This is a great opportunity to check out hundreds of RV units now in stock at Ron Hoover and see what kind of deals may be available on 2018 models that they want to move out. Factory reps will also be on hand to answer questions and some of them may be offering special year-end close-out deals. “It’s an excellent time to buy and trade and get a really good deal on a new RV,” said Dustin Hoover, vice-president of Ron Hoover RV & Marine Center. Ron Hoover RV & Marine Center is located at 101 Expressway 83 in Donna (on the south side of the expressway). Extra parking is available on North Ave. behind the dealership, and golf cart shuttles will be provided all along North Ave. to the store.

Loaves and fishes provides food and shelter for homeless

By Kathy Olivarez Loaves and Fishes in Harlingen is a homeless shelter that provides daily meals and temporary shelter for up to 30 days and some educational assistance to the homeless of Harlingen. The shelter, which first opened its doors in 1991, is located at 514 E. “E” Street in Harlingen. It is an “open arms” shelter where everyone who is hungry or in need of a place to stay is welcome – no questions asked. Bill Reagan, who has served as executive director for the past nine years, told the Winter Texan Times, there are five main functions of Loaves and Fishes. Reagan is a pastor, who until recently served as pastor of Our Redeemer Church, in addition to his duties at the shelter. The shelter has grown over the years since it moved to its present location in 2008, and now has 15 employees, 11 full-time and four part-time. The first function is referred to as Bread of Life. The shelter has a kitchen that is open seven days a week serving three meals Monday through Friday and two meals on weekends, serving up to 12,000 meals every month. November, December and August are peak months for meals. Many come to the shelter for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. Thanksgiving dinner is served the day before Thanksgiving while Christmas dinner is served Christmas Eve. Often there are 300 to 400 people for these traditional meals. Children who attend on Christmas Eve receive a toy for Christmas. Reagan said August is a peak month because children are out of school and families run out of food stamps to feed the family. Reagan said the meals are prepared and served by volunteers, church or civic groups and people doing community service. The second function of the shelter is to provide shelter. As an Open Arms Homeless Shelter, it has a rapid re-housing program where people can stay up to 30 days while arrangements for other housing are made. The shelter can house 66 people at a time with its current beds and up to 120 with cots during an emergency. Reagan said the shelter has two outreach workers who locate the homeless in the city and invite them into the shelter. The third function is the New Hope Job Shop. Staff and volunteers can assist people in getting their GED (alternate high school diploma) if they have not finished high school. The shelter teaches basic life skills and those staying at the shelter can earn a certificate in Microsoft Office to prepare them for office jobs. Reagan said a few people have been placed in offices but they have had more

The fifth component is the Great Physicians. There is a daily nurse who comes to check blood pressures and blood sugars. Dr. Robinson comes to the shelter weekly and provides regular office services for those who come to the shelter. The one area the shelter does not address is clothing. They do not take or distribute clothing to the homeless or needy families. The Winter Texan Times asked Regan about the needs the shelter had. The number one need is money. It costs about $1 million a year to keep the shelter operating at its current level. Approximately 40 percent of this cost is met by local churches and service organizations. Government contracts supply about 33 percent of the costs. The shelter also receives funding from United Way and (Ages 60+. Tax not included. Cannot be combined with other specials or offers) charitable foundations. The rest of the funding comes from group and individual donations. 3 convenient Valley locations: Reagan said a dozen Winter Texan parks in the Harlingen area held their 4100 N 2nd St 1208 Expressway 77 & 83 2100 FM 802 own church services and took a collecMcAllen, TX Harlingen, TX Brownsville, TX tion. Ranchero residents brighten Christmas for kids Red Hat Queens celebrate Christmas

By Henry Miller Jan Murphy fought at the idea; she battled with God over idea. “I felt God was asking me to do this,” she said. “I wasn’t interested in doing it, but he told me I was going to do it and he was going to work on me until I did.” Now in its sixth year Jan’s Christmas for Kids has blessed nearly 50 families who may have gone without during the Christmas holidays. The “event” is a collaboration between residents at Ranchero Village in Weslaco and Margo Elementary School, which sits just down the road. The two already work together with other functions; residents will go read to school children and, in turn, the students will come and perform their Christmas program for the residents. Jan’s Christmas for Kids begins when Rosie Arriaga, a parent specialist for 23 years at Margo Elementary, delivers the names of students from eight families who she knows who could use a better Christmas. “Miss Rosie brings us the names and I will distribute the names to people in the park. They’ll take a name or two and buy gifts for the children,” Murphy said. “There will be several real good donations and people will give whatever they can.” Three other couples will then go buy the toys and food to prepare for delivery day, the final day of school. The couples, joined by Arriaga and her husband, enjoy

making the deliveries to the families. Prior to delivering on Dec. 21, nearly a dozen tables and many chairs were covered in the items purchased. There was plenty of food, milk, paper towels, laundry detergent and other necessities to make each family’s holiday a little less worrisome and a whole lot brighter. “The people are really appreciative; a lot of them don’t have the funds to buy gifts for their children,” Murphy said. “When we buy the gifts we put them in a big bag and each bag has a child’s name on it.” Imagine the look on a child’s face – one day he or she has no expectations of Santa visiting; the next day there’s a big bag with

The Rio Grande Valley Red Hat Society Queen’s Council held its December meeting at Red Lobster in McAllen and celebrated Christmas with a gift exchange. Tickets are $18. Ladies wanting tickets should contact their local queens or Jan Bergman at (956) 532-1233 or (956) 7818485 for tickets to the event. The queens were informed there would be no racing of live greyhounds so there will not be a special Red Hat event at the race track. The Dazzling Dolphins in Port Isabel will be holding their annual style show Feb. 26 at the Schlitterbahn on South Padre Island. The theme is “Lace and Roses.” No details are available yet on where to get the tickets.
