After DIEGO 19 years of unofficial study one would tend to think Renk agrees with the sentiment. Nineteen years ago, Renk opened the Santa Maria Bullring on Farm-to-Market Road 1017 in La Gloria, Texas. Today, there is nothing for miles on the desolate road, just a lot of ranch land, high and low fences and the bullring, the “only bullring used for bullfighting in the United States,” said the former matador. More than 300 people also came to enjoy an afternoon of bloodless bullfighting under near-perfect weather conditions. There was food, beverages, music, dancing horses and, of course, bulls – 1,000-pound fighting bulls. People came from as far away as Vera Cruz, Mexico, to the south and the northern border of Matador Leal Montalvo executed a stunning performance at the Santa Maria Bull- Minnesota. Bullfights are much different in the ring Saturday, following a near miss when the bull charged him instead of his cape. While the Lone Star Jubilee shows are certainly filled with inspiration, fun and laughter, they also serve a purpose. “It’s to support our ministry,” said Sam Ray, who first started performing at Dallas Christian College with the Master’s Four in 1971. Sam Ray moved to Branson in 1983 and changed their name to the Texans, now a full-time family trio comprised of Sam, wife Brenda, and son Curtis. They began their fulltime traveling ministry in 1999, performing more than 300 concerts a year, sharing the stage with speakers like TD Jakes, Charles

Great talent performs at Entertainers Showcase Kody Norris was fascinated – he used

the word “mesmerized” – with the performers he saw on the Grand Ole Opry when he was a child. Not only was he drawn in by the music, but also by the bright, bold colors that the performers wore; and the bling – the shiny rhinestones that peppered so many of the outfits, from Glen Campbell to Dolly Parton. The influence was quite clear as the Kody Norris Band was one of about 35 bands, groups and individuals to perform at the Entertainers Showcase last week at Park Place Estates in Harlingen, organized and run by Robert and Billie Ferguson. While bull riders are given just seven seconds to impress the judges, showcase entertainers are given nine minutes – with similar pressure attached – to show park activity directors what they can do in hopes of getting booked for shows the following year. “I had no idea what to expect,” said Norris, whose group was recommended to come to the Valley by Goldwing Express’ Steven Baldridge. “I was like a cat on a hot tin roof and everybody was running around. Stanley, Jerry Falwell and Tim Lahaye. After seven years of road ministry the group cut back and in 2009, created the Top of the Mountain Dinner Theater in Eureka, Ark. But the calling came calling again and in 2013 they went back into full-time traveling ministry, performing about 200 concerts a year, singing gospel music and putting on comedy skits. Sam Ray said, “In 2018 The Texans went to Gonavies Haiti, Cebu Philippines, Bahol, Leyte, And Manila providing Churches, Feeding centers, schools, clothes, and performed at the International Christian Convention. We also traveled over 39,000 miles here in the U.S., helping complete senior adult low cost housing, summer camps for adults and children and fundraising for mission projects around the world.” The Texans will be returning for their 41st year to entertain the Rio Grande Valley. The Texans have won many awards in Branson, Mo. with a show including comedy and music. Along with Sam Ray and The Texans family trio, bass vocalist David Little and Duke Mason will also be performing in this year’s Lone Star Jubilee. Duke Mason is a special performer because of his unique height of only 46 inches. However, his talent and charismatic personality bring a respect and dignity to his singing that only few are chosen to have. Mason sings, plays guitar, keyboard, bass and drums. Mason comes from a singing family. He began singing in personal appearances with

his family when he was only 4 years old. At the age of 7, he met and sang with the world famous “Duke Of Paducah” at a state fair in Des Moines, Iowa. On several occasions, Mason has performed with legendary singing group, the Jordanaires. Since September 2000, Mason has appeared on the nationally televised program “The Maury Show,” hosted by Maury Povitch. Following his first performance, an Elvis rendition of “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” Povitch said “we’ve had a lot of people sing Elvis on our show, but you are absolutely the best.” Oklahoma’s David Little returns as well. Known for his deep bass voice, Little formerly sang with the Schaefer Brothers quartet. The Texans were twice voted Branson’s Entertainers of the Year and four times selected as Branson Group of the Year. In 2015 they were named Gospel Group of the Year in the Valley Star Awards in the Rio Grande Valley. A freewill offering of $10 per person is suggested. No one will be turned away if they cannot pay. Faith’s Journey performs in RGV

They’re Absolutely Country and Definitely Gospel. That’s the name of the show performed by Faith’s Journey, a ministry of music that performs more than 120 dates a year from coast to coast. The musical ministry is comprised of Jonathan Edwards (emcee and baritone), his wife Deana Edwards (soprano), Josh Adams (tenor) and Lee Hendrix on pi-

ano. Faith’s Journey has ministered on small and large stages across the country singing great traditional gospel music. They have been featured performers at Branson’s Silver Dollar City as well as had their music played on radio stations across the country. The group returns to the Rio Grande Valley for the fourth year. “We really enjoy the opportunity to

catch up with the people we don’t see any other place,” said Johnathan Edwards, who was saved at the age of 6 in Humboldt, Tenn., where his dad was a pastor. “It’s always great to meet new people and play new parks each and every year. “Plus, the area is always beautiful, and we enjoy the food as well in the Valley.” Jonathan Edwards attended Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Mo., where he began his radio career at KWFC (100,000-watt Christian Radio station). While attending BBC, Jonathan toured with a gospel group called Tribute. He has served as youth pastor, music pastor and senior pastor, but his love for Southern Gospel Music keeps bringing him back to radio and singing. He has been nominated twice for Favorite DJ of the year in the medium market by the subscribers of the Singing News Magazine. In 2012 he won the Paul Heil Award for Favorite Broadcast Personality by the Diamond Awards and SGN Scoops. Over the past few years he has had a syndicated Southern Gospel Radio show on more than 20 stations. He traveled with Final Call and The Ascension Quartet before meeting his wife Deana and forming/ owning Faith’s Journey. Deana Edwards born in Bratt, Fla., and

saved at the age of 11 in her home church. She began singing at the early age of 4, singing harmony with her mother Rose. She began singing with Southern Heritage, a regional group in the Southeast formed with her mother in 1989, where she remained until getting married and moving to Branson in 2012. Deana loves music with harmony and “never meets a stranger at a concert.” She and Jonathan have three children. She is extremely excited to embark on this new chapter in her life with a new ministry serving with her husband on a full-time basis. The group, which was voted Branson’s 2018 Dinner Show of the Year, brings a fresh breath to both country and gospel music. Their rich and bold harmonies, plus stage presence, make for a show that needs to be seen and heard and touches the senses as well as the soul. JANUARY 16, 2019 MATADOR

From pg. 1 United States than in other countries because the bulls are not killed or injured. In other countries, 13 according to Renk, the bull is first weakened by a picador, who spears the bull to draw first blood. Bloodless bullfighting is much more dangerous for the matador, and several matadors have been tossed or injured at the Santa Maria Bullring, including Renk’s own son, David Renk. Fans got a quick look at a dangerous moment that world-class matador Leal Montalvo faced, the bull turning and making an unexpected quick charge on the matador. The bull first made a charge at Montalvo's midsection, possibly sideswiping Montalvo, who quickly sidestepped most of the danger. The bull turned and again was upon his enemy in the ring. Montalvo pushed himself away from the bull, his hand fully on the animal's horn, and helpers in the ring distracted the bull and gave the matador time to recuperate. The time, however, wasn't very long and Montalvo was back out in the ring, twirling, sidestepping and keeping the cape moving as the bull targeted and charged over and over, never once endangering Montalvo – well, not any more than being in the ring with a half-ton maniacal animal with a pair of horns. ARVP

www.wintertexantimes.com

Montalvo performed along with famous matador Manolo Martinez and Michelito Lagravere, who won the Golden Bull Award last year at Santa Maria and was also awarded symbolic ears and tail on two occasions in 2018. Renk himself was a matador who was injured being tossed by a bull. One story describes that 1969 battle between Renk and the bull named “La Conquistador,” as follows: “(His son David) watched many times as Renk drew his magenta-colored cape, charming the dust into a swirl as death charged past him. This time, however, when Renk offered the cape, the bull took aim at his knee. He spun the cape in a circular motion, and the beast tossed Renk in the air. After he fell to the ground, Conquistador played with him: He speared him in the upper leg and pulled Renk atop his head like a floppy hat worn akimbo. Then, as if to gloat, Conquistador pranced, presenting his trophy to the gasping crowd before he rammed Renk’s body into the sidewall of the ring.” His passion, nor David's never slowed. Saturday's bullfight was actually in honor of David Renk, who died in September of congestive heart failure. Fred Renk, the master of ceremonies for the event, urged people to cheer on the matadors. “Let's hear it, Ole!” he would yell, rousing the audience's attention and excitement. He's been around this for decades and understands that many in the

The crowd - on the shade side of the Santa Maria Bullring - enjoying the show. crowd were first-timers, among them a van full of Winter Texans from Illinois who weren't sure what to expect. “This is our first time,” said one of the group members, adding he had worked on a farm before and saw his brother chased by a bull, but that was the closest he had been to a bull fight. “We have no idea what to expect but we do know a lot of what goes on is traditional and it all has meaning.” Matadors prayed as they prepared themselves physically, mentally and spiritually. A small room under the stands held candles and other religious artifacts, for those to have moments in prayer. The arena, built by Renk, has an air

that demands respect. As the matadors stand facing their opponent, the pride and majesty of one of the world's oldest sports fills the air. There are openings along the ring and behind barriers where people can watch, while seated in the shade of the seats above them. These are the box seats. The next bullfight will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 26. Call the bullring at 956-481-3300 to make reservations and for directions. Pay upon arrival. All tickets are the same price as last year $30 sun, $35 shade and ringside covered box seats are $40. Children under 12 free. Gates open at 1 p.m. You’ll want to arrive early for food and entertainment prior to the bullfight. The bullfight begins at 4 p.m. sharp.

Close call at Santa Maria Bullring

Matador Leal Montalvo was nearly gored by a bull during Saturday’s “bloodless” bullfight. In the first photo (Top Left), Montalvo is shown grabbing the bull’s horn in effort to push himself away from the danger as the bull charged the matador instead of his red cape. Sensing the danger, the matador’s assistants distracted the bull, giving Montalvo time to escape the threat. The undaunted matador quickly resumed his “ballet” with the bull, coaxing him, daring him to make another pass – and another, and another – as the world-class matador skillfully performed the dance of life before a cheering crowd. Photos by Henry Miller.

Matador Michelito Lagravere seems to mesmerize the bull as he prepares for it to charge during the bullfight at the Santa Maria Bullring in La Gloria on Saturday.

From pg. 1 you are shooting at on the shuffleboard court,” he added. That is what many have done in getting ready for the competition that began with the McAllen Parks and Recreation Department’s singles event on Jan. 7. The singles contest continues until Jan. 18. Yauchzee and his wife, Joanne, have been helping with the tournament for amateur and expert shufflers at Casa Del Sol for the past 10 years. He pointed out they receive a lot of help from park residents in rewaxing the discs to make for easy sliding on the court. Almost all shufflers bring their own sticks for pushing the discs, much like golfers have a favorite putter. The Yauchzees, who were from Leroy, NY, but have been full-time residents for the past five years, are in the expert division and have been winners in the Olympics mixed doubles. Ed has also been a champion in the men’s singles and doubles. He admitted he used to be pretty intense in competition, but he’s more relaxed now. Joanne said they got their start with shuffleboard 15 years ago when neighbors invited them to the Casa Del Sol courts. “We laughed,” she said, “That’s for old people.” But they found it a lot of fun and stayed with it. Ed said shuffleboard requires skill and strategy along with the practice. Most Winter Texans “shuffle” nearly every day, with tournaments held a couple of days in many parks. Competition involves 20 frames with each player using four discs each time. It helps to win the first match, as a loss puts the contestant in a different bracket, requiring more wins to move back up into the top brackets, he noted. Being in the Olympics was a bit extra

replacement surgery. The first year fulltime resident now at Snow to Sun RV/MH Park in Weslaco, noted the knee was a bit tender with just getting to return to play the previous week. She is one of the oldest women at 84 years of age competing in tournaments twice a week before the surgery. She is in the expert division, having achieved singles championships in a national meet held at Fun N Sun Resort in San Benito, a state tourney at Snow to Sun and locally for those over 75 at Victoria Palms Resort. “I achieved everything I wanted, so now I just have fun,” Hall said. “Her husband, Venis, also playing, is an expert too and holds the distinction of being the oldest shuffler at age 97. Darold Niemeier, from Lenexa, Kansas, is at the other end of the competition having shuffled only two years. The current resident at Texas Trails RV Resort in Pharr, is in his first year of playing in the Golden Age Olympics. He shuffles just about every day in his park here. “I enjoy it,” Niemeier said, “You make a lot of new friends.” In fact, he was competing against one of them from the park, Melvin Scott, who hails from Milan, Missouri, and has been shuffling for eight to 10 years. Three years ago, Niemeier rented a place for a month with his wife Kay. “We fell in love with the area,” he added. “There are more activities than anyone can do.” He has been into pickleball, beanbag contests and dancing with the wife. “It keeps us young,” he concluded. Most of the competitors one talks to are found to be highly enthusiastic about the sport. That’s one of the reasons most parks have shuffleboard courts as part of a wide variety of activity choices.

If you are an aficionado of the culinary delights from the Indian subcontinent, then you will be pleased with the authenticity and variety to be found at Kabob Guys. If you have never tried Indian cuisine, it may well be because of common Western misconceptions about Indian dining. Those misconceptions vanished with my very first bite. On my first trip to the buffet I sampled nearly every dish offered, and not one of them fit my former idea of Indian food being overly spicy and curry-laden. In fact, owner Aamer Aman points out that every dish on the buffet is prepared mild, and if you order off the menu your dish can be seasoned to your preference. Aman knows that some like it hot, and for those that do, there are a variety of sauces on the buffet you can choose from to add a little heat—or a lot. As we reviewed the menu, Aman pointed out several favorites such as the Chicken Tikka Masala, Tandoori Chicken, and Beef Curry; each of which can be ordered off the menu or found on the buffet. Just like the menu, the buffet has three distinct sections. The first section on the buffet was the Pakistani selection of meats, or Kebab – a Pakistani style of barbeque in which meat is cooked on a spit or skewer over a clay, wood-fired oven. Next on the buffet is the vegan selection of Indian dishes, all prepared without any animal meat or by-product. Indian food is replete with fresh fruits and vegetables prepared in many different ways. This section of dishes includes the garden-fresh flavors of the Cabbage Masala; flavorful Dal Tarka, lentils cooked with mustard seeds turmeric, cumin seeds and Indian spices; and an earthy Zera Aloo, potatoes cooked with cumin seeds, fresh coriander and Indian spices, a very popular dish. Finally, on the buffet is the vegetarian selection of dishes, desserts, and sauces. The dishes in this section may be similar to the vegan dishes as they were prepared without the use of animal meat or fat, but differ as they can use by-products so could include the use of butter, yogurt, and cheese. You really must try Kabob Guys soon. I would bet they quickly become one of your new favorites. The full buffet is available for $9.99 anytime. Winter Texans receive a 15% discount with their coupon found on this page. Located at 137 W. Nolana Ave., Ste. 137, McAllen, Kabob Guys is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Mark Schwendner electrifies the crowd with his performance of “Wooly Bully” at the Green Gate Grove rock ‘n roll jam.

Rock n roll Jam at Green Gate Grove

Danny & The Juniors boldly proclaimed, in their musical hit in 1960. that “Rock n Roll is here to stay.” In the 70s, the John Travolta and Olivia Newton John confirmed that prognostication in the movie “Grease.” Now, another 40-plus years later, Winter Texan parks and resorts across the Rio Grande Valley are enjoying rock n roll more than ever and making sure it’s here to stay. Green Gate Grove is one of the latest parks to add a rock ‘n roll jam to its list of weekly events. The park ended the year on a rockin’ note with a dozen different performers with songs ranging from George Bowers performing “Johnny B. Good” to Bob and Lily Weibe with Elvis’ “Don’t be Cruel” and Mark Schwendner with an exciting and fun version of “Wooly Bully.” The event is new for the park, and judging by the excitement on the stage and in the crowd, it will be a growing event throughout the year. One of the things that seems to be consistent in the jams is the level of talent. In most cases, performers at one time or another played with some of the greatest entertainers throughout history. Martin Strubberg, who was the host of the Green Gate jam, remembered the day when he and some other musicians were together when Ike and Tina Turner walked into the building. They were in town one day to scout the lead guitarist for the band Strubberg performed with. The band and the Turners spent the day together and when it was over, Strubberg and his band were looking for a new guitarist. “We were a small group that would get together and go look for some jobs playing in the area,” Strubberg said. “They came into town looking for a lead guitarist and they hired him (Herb Sadler). We spent the day with them and ended up

playing behind them in St. Louis. It was the greatest experience of my life. It was just one crazy song after another. “I was 20 or 21 and they had just hit the big time. Talk about being nervous.” After that experience, Strubberg organized a band and they stayed together for about 16 years. Later on, after he left the band, he moved to Springfield, Mo., and bought a dairy farm. “I did that for several years and it got to the point where you just couldn’t make any money,” he said. Stories like Strubberg’s abounds with the performers throughout the Valley’s various stages, from playing with Elvis to performing with the likes of the Turners or B.J. Thomas or Charlie Daniels, the underground music scene among Winter Texans is like a virtual who’s who. Brothers Bob and Bill Schneider, who sang “World Without Love” and “White Sports Coat,” have made their living performing – for 60 years. “We started when we were 7 in church together,” Bill said. Then my mom bought a guitar for me when I was12 and I learned three chords.” The Schneiders play at three rock n roll jams weekly but will try to perform in two jams per day, six days a week. Born in North Dakota and raised in Iowa, the Schneiders have lived full time in the Valley, staying at Circle T Park, for the past year and a half. The brothers have performed in Branson, Mo., Las Vegas and around the globe over those six decades. “We enjoyed the Green Gate jam, it was very good,” said Bill, adding that they perform also at Bentsen Grove and at a new jam on Tuesdays at Casa del Valle. “There are more rock n roll jams being created. We like that.” That’s because rock n roll is here to stay.

www.wintertexantimes.com SHOWCASE

From pg. 1 cision that they do a great job catering to the entertainers. Coming back this year we were 100 percent more at ease.” That comfort showed as the boldly dressed group electrified the crowd with their high-flying, fast paced bluegrass music, Norris all in a red outfit while the remainder of the group was decked out in all blue – they would’ve made the Grand Ole Opry proud. Apparently, those in the crowd were excited as well. “The bookings went great,” Norris said afterwards. “We’re up about 30 percent from last year and that’s a step in the right direction. We even had some talks going into 2020. We had a lot of compliments on our dress code – we heard a lot about that, and we put a lot of effort into that. Always keep it classy, but also keep it captivating. We want to be professional in all we do.” Many of the performers early in the day were well-known regulars to the Valley and Winter Texan entertainment scene, such as three-time Valley Star Awards Entertainer of the Year Bill Chrastil, Lindley Creek, and Tavie Spivey with Shake, Rattle and Roll. Many of these groups could get bookings just on their popularity, but each year there seems to be more options and more talent coming from Las Vegas, Nashville, Branson and elsewhere. The competition is getting tougher. “When you first come down, you don’t know anything about what goes on and how it works – so you just need to wing it,” said

Spivey, who has her solo show as well as the Shake, Rattle and Roll show. The group performed portions of hits such as “Twist Again,” “Respect,” and “All Shook Up.” The recipe for success to getting bookings is a combination of a great stage presence, songs to engage the audience, audience participation – and a little bit of comedy doesn’t hurt either. Shake, Rattle and Roll not only booked 38 shows for February 2020 (many including two shows in a day) but also booked 11 shows for 2021. “That just seems so far away,” Spivey said. “You have nine minutes to give it all you’ve got, and they need to see your best stuff.” Last year, Rusty Rierson came all the way from Wichita, Kansas when the temperature was zero degrees at home – and his car’s heater broke down on the way. The Nashville recording artist said it was a much longer drive than it should’ve been since he had to stop to “thaw out” a couple of times. It was a quick in and out trip for him and he even booked shows before the showcase. This year, with one showcase under his belt, he was clearly at ease while performing his country music. His amazing vocals, and quick funny barbs, clearly appealed to the “bookies” in attendance. “I was a little better prepared this year for the showcase, knowing what to expect,” Rierson said. “That’s a day when you need everything to go right and produce synergy – where one plus one equals three. With the amount of entertainers, talent bookers, press and the event itself, that’s possible.” Rierson already has a busy schedule for

the remainder of the year but added a few shows while booking shows in 2020 and 2021, including a few Christmas shows at the end of this year. Tracy Wagner waited in the booking room and received a text from her helper, who was critiquing the performers. It didn’t take long before Wagner received her first message - “book the Kody Norris Show.” “You have to hustle to book the top shows,” said Wagner, activity director at Tropic Winds RV Park. “It gets pretty hectic.” Activity directors need to know what is appealing to their residents and need to fill out the entertainment schedule with variety; it’s like putting a puzzle together. Maude Agnew is an active volunteer at Casa del Valle and can be seen at almost anything that has to do with music and entertainment, a valuable asset at her park. She has been to several showcases, will likely be at the next one, and is passionate about music. “The showcase was amazing, and I can’t wait for [the next one],” she said, confirming her appearance. “Last year when I heard 4 His Glory, it just blew me away and I haven’t forgotten that. Every year I’m just in awe.” Agnew said there’s nothing like the showcase back home in Ontario, Canada. “I wish I could take what they do with me when I go home,” she said. “This is me and my husband’s life. We love all the bluegrass and variety shows and the family groups like Lindley Creek or Williamson Branch. People just don’t realize all that is here. It’s amazing.”

The Wheelhouse of The Winter Texan

by Roberto Ontiveros Visitors to the 2019 All Valley RV and Outdoor Show got a glimpse of much more than posh park models and travel trailers. The three day event, held at the Mercedes Livestock Showgrounds, was a window to the recreational adventures of the RGV’s Winter Texan community. Marie A. Howard, who manages Magic Valley RV Park in Weslaco, notes that many of the attendees showed up specifically for the vending tables, which this year included gourmet cookware as well as therapeutic jewelry, and even information on pinhole dentistry. “They do shop, and they do look at the new RVs,” says Howard, explaining that “we have vendors with all kinds of supplies and things and information on lots of parks from all over the Valley.” In her 13th year working with the RV show, Howard has seen the annual event bring in as many as 8,000 people. According to Betty Corcoran, a vendor who sells custom made necklaces and bracelets, the crowds coming for the vending booths were increasing. “More and more people are here and that is a good thing,” she says. Corcoran, a Minnesotan who has been involved with the event for three years now, describes the weather of the Valley as its major draw. “I come for the winter,” she says, adding: “I mean compared

to Minnesota at this time of year. Like the other day it was 20 below zero compared to 70 degrees.” A happy resident of the Fig Tree RV Resort in Harlingen, Corcoran, beams about the entertainment she engages in as a Winter Texan. “We have activities every day. I love to play cards and that kind of stuff so every evening I go out for a couple of hours.” Corcoran believes that the warmth of the Valley is therapeutic and helps Winter Texans with aches and pains. She also loves the border culture and travels to Mexico, feeling “totally safe.” Joe Diaz, the owner of RV Station, blames sensational news for any trepidation experienced by winter tourists regarding the Valley. “So the perception has actually got out of whack,” says Diaz. “It’s not what people think it is with the news and TV and all that stuff.” Diaz, who has been selling RVs for 25 years, stresses the affordability and easy living of the Rio Grande Valley as major selling points. “Economically, compared to Florida, compared to Arizona, you get a lot more bang for your buck, and it’s a lot more tranquil than people think,” he says. “You have to go to Panama City, Florida, to get the same kind of weather and that is a lot more expensive,” says Diaz. Taking into account the fair weather, the affordability and the friendliness of the RGV locals, Diaz considers the Rio Grande
