Mission to host first ever Veterans Day Parade

Each year, thousands of people unite to commemorate Veterans Day, a holiday that honors all those who have served the country in war or peace — dead or alive — although it is largely intended to thank living veterans for their sacrifices. This year, the City of Mission is honoring local military heroes with its weekend-long Mission Veterans Festival, “Our Mission is Service,” beginning Friday, November 8, with a flag-laying ceremony at the RGV State Veterans Ceremony, 2520 Inspiration Rd, in Mission. “Veterans Day is not just a chance to enjoy an extra day off from work or See PARADE pg. 15

For several years we have gotten Winter Texans’ input on the Valley top golf course and favorite holes at the golf courses in the Rio Grande Valley. This year we are starting a little early with our series that introduces some hidden gems at the more popular Valley golf courses. This is the last of a three-part series introducing these hidden gems in three categories – lower, middle and upper Valley. These hidden gems are recommended by the golf pros, or regulars, at the golf courses. Jerry and Iris Weersma, of Arcadia, Mich., enjoyed a round of golf at Tierra del Sol in Pharr.

The Mission of the CAF: To keep the planes flying

The mission of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) is to keep the planes from WWII flying. What started with one plane has grown not only into a mission to save the planes from the era, but to also keep them in their natural habitat – in the air. More than 11,000 volunteers work to keep the airplanes flying so generations can “see, hear, feel, and experience the power and majesty of these aircraft in operation.” The CAF goal is to keep these airplanes alive to “tell the story of the greatest generation.” While there is a need for pilots, Chris Hughston, RGV Wing operations officer, See AIRCRAFT pg. 20

Help decorate golf carts for parade

The City of Mission is urging civic, school and church groups to help volunteer for the first ever Veterans Parade November 9. City leaders are excited to pay tribute to the heroes who have served our country, but they need the community to participate in this great event by decorating a golf cart for the veterans that will ride them down the parade route. The theme is of course patriotic. Mission will have 50 golf carts to decorate on site at Leo Peña Placita Park from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9. Groups must provide their own decorations and bring all supplies needed – scissors, tape, string, glue, etc. Groups should make a sign for the golf cart that they decorate. Example: “Decorated proudly by…” To register, please contact Deputy City Manager Aida Lerma at (956) 580-8729.

RGV’s PREMIER ACTIVE ADULT COMMUNITY

Charity benefiting children in Progreso asking for help

Many Winter Texans take time to donate to local charities while they are here in the Rio Grande Valley. There are many organizations, school, churches, and other places and organizations, that you spend your time with while in the Valley. As we approach the holiday season, our hearts are drawn to those less fortunate – especially children in the community and those across the border. Without the generosity of others, these children, and families, would have a very sad and bleak Christmas. Winter Texans have a reputation for their generous hearts and are known to plan food and clothing drives, make quilts, and gather donations for the many needy families and children in the Valley and Mexico. If your park or resort is planning anything for Thanksgiving or Christmas, such as food or toy drives, or any other activities to help brighten the holidays for the less fortunate, send us an email at news@wintertexantimes.com or call (956) 580-7800. We would love to hear from you and share your story with others. With the holidays just around the corner, some of those places are already asking for help. This organization is just one that is already seeking help from their community.

As most know from being located so close to the border of Mexico, many children go without proper food, shelter and essential medical care every day due to a variety of factors. This need is magnified when so many children are denied even the blessings of the Christmas season. Amigos de Los Ninos de Mexico (friends of the children of Mexico) was organized in 1990 to address this need through gifts of friendship, love, food and presents to the children. There are many ways you can help. You can help by becoming an Amigo member by attending a meeting and buying a one-time $5 badge; donate or gather some of the needed items; or have fun with the children when they are presented their goodies. Some big ways to help include going across the border in a caravan of vehicles on December 23rd to bring the gifts collected and get them set up for Christmas day or to sign up to help with various committees who will be distributing the goodies to the children. General meetings will be held at the Donna First Methodist Church, 228 S. Main St. at 1:30 p.m. Dates for meetings are November 12 and 26, and DecemberT p See CHARITY pg. 14 C a a

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

King Ranch holds their Ranch Hand Breakfast It’s Texas brag time! Once we could brag that we were the largest state in the Union, but not anymore. Even so, we can still brag, for surely that is what Texans do best. The “brag” this time is that south Texas has the largest ranch in Texas ... the famous King Ranch. Perhaps at one time we could brag that the King Ranch was one of the largest ranches in the world. But not anymore. Today, the South Texas King Ranch has a total of 825,000 acres. Next in size, and located in Texas, would be the Waggoner Ranch with 590,527 acres. When we compare acreage worldwide, we are truly out ranked by ranches that are found in Australia. Two ranches in Australia far surpass Texas with Ana Creek Station at 6,000,000 acres and Alexandria Station with 4,000,000 acres. Even so, the King Ranch has always been in the forefront with conservation, education for the children of the ranch hands, and with up breeding of both the cattle and horses on the ranch. From the original lank and rangy long horn cattle, to the Santa Gertrudis breed and from the cutting horse to Assault, a triple crown winner, the King Ranch has always accepted the challenge of improving the herd and conserving the soil. Perhaps at one time or another, all of us have dreamed about living on a ranch and being a real cowboy or cowgirl. What fun it would have been to have been one of the cowhands who herded the longhorns on the long cattle drives to the Kansas market. Even in this day and age, sleeping on the ground under a star filled sky, sitting around a campfire and eating your meals prepared by the camp cook, could easily be every young child’s dream. Although we may not have experienced living on a ranch, we can still experience a little of what it would be like by attending the Ranch Hand Breakfast. Annually, the City of Kingsville teams with King Ranch to bring to us the Ranch Hand Breakfast. The breakfast is always offered the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This year the breakfast will be offered on Saturday, November 23. Breakfast will be served from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. Youngsters, as well as the oldsters, can enjoy a heaping plate of eggs, refried beans, biscuits n’ gravy, sausage, tortillas, coffee and orange juice. It is a great way for young and old to experience just a little of ranch life.

s m M m w w K o r h e

But this event is not just about eat-d ing. You will enjoy watching the Texasi cutting horse as the horse instinctivelyt follows the lead of the cowboy and sep-R arates - or cuts - from the herd the cow ors steer that the cowboy has indicated to thev horse. The horse and rider become as oneM n - a true team - to make this happen. Branding is another ranch experiencet that not everyone has witnessed. You will get to hold the branding iron as yous “brand” a piece of wood to take home asp a souvenir. Branding, or marking, the cat-P tle with your registered mark is how theR rancher indicates this animal belongs to f me. A true art practiced by the camp cookf is Dutch oven cooking which will beb demonstrated in the preparation of “panu de cam po” or camp bread. Heaping coalsp underneath and on top of the Dutch oven must be exactly right not to bum the thin crusty bread. So, so good, especially with honey - and dripping with butter would make it even better. Try it, you will like it. Attending the Ranch Hand Breakfast would be a wonderful experience for grandparents or parents to share with a grandchild, or for parents to share with their child. Why not build a memory that will last forever? King Ranch is located in Kingsville. Visit their Facebook page, King Ranch Visitor Center, or their website at https:// king-ranch.com/visit/our-tours/, for more information or to learn about their tours and other events.

GOLF

From pg. 1 In turn, we would like to hear from you during the series. We will have a survey on our website, www.wintertexantimes. com, for you to vote on your favorite hole. We will be taking votes until November 13. We will announce winners in an article on November 20. Hidden gems, diamonds in the rough, unexpected surprises — like finding an extra $20 that was forgotten in the pocket of a pair of pants — can have a profound positive effect on one’s day. Similarly, golf courses have some hidden gems of their own. Sure, they have their “signature holes,” usually the most difficult, most scenic or most unique (most of the times all three) hole on the course. But hidden away are those other holes that bring a smile to a golfer’s face (sometimes dread) but, just like a mystery writer who throws twists and turns throughout their novels, golf courses do the same. Three of the courses in the Upper Rio

Grande Valley that often appear on top of Winter Texans’ favorite places to play are no different. And, over the course of the past 12-18 months have made some changes to not only improve the course but also have made some of their gems all “shiny and new again.” PALMVIEW GOLF COURSE, McALLEN Before you even get to the golf course at Palmview, there’s a hard-to-hide hidden gem that was just constructed over the summer. “The driving range here is amazing,” Golf Director Carlos Espinosa said. “You won’t find many driving ranges of this size and quality that are open to the public in the United States. I honestly, don’t know if there are any.” The range is 130 yards in length by 52 yards in width and opened Sept. 11. It’s open from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. seven days a week. “It’s a monster,” Espinosa said. “It almost looks like a football field.” Espinosa said that on the course, the 340-yard par-4 No. 10 is a gem that will challenge golfers from the tee, more from the approach and finally on the putt, if you’re lucky enough to get on the green in two. “The way the wind blows, the way the green slopes, and with the lake in front of the green – a small green, it makes it very difficult,” Espinosa said. “It’s very hidden.” The key to the hole is to get a good tee shot that lands between 120-130 yards from the green. “That’s where the challenge begins,” Espinosa said. “The wind can be up and down there. There’s a berm behind it that blocks the wind, but only sometimes. Then if you come up short on the green – you can go five or six yards past the water, but the way the green is sloped, it will trickle back and could end up in the water, just like at Augusta. “The tee shot isn’t the difficult shot; the second shot is.”

Golfers finish out their putting on a well-protected green at Los Lagos Golf Club in Edinburg. LOS LAGOS GOLF CLUB, EDINBURG Los Lagos is currently building a couple of new gems - well more like shining them up - into its course. The 18-hole facility known for fairways that seemingly all slant to the water, and hundreds of moguls throughout, is making some modification to two holes that manager Liz Segar said will add to the enjoyment of playing the course. As golfers finish No. 13, they will see

www.wintertexantimes.com

a new rustic monument at the back of the hole with the Los Lagos logo. Then, it’s off the No. 14, currently being worked out. The short par-3 is having a new tee box added to it. The 175-yard shot is straight over water. There’s no tees, no trees but only a bunker in front of the green, guarding it. Of course, there’s always the Los Lagos wind, similar to what one would face at the island. So, prepare to go up a club or two and enjoy the new scenery. No. 14 is also usually the money-prize hole when it comes to golf tournaments. Sink a hole-in-one and suddenly this gem has paid off. TIERRA DEL SOL, PHARR In 2013, Tierra del Sol put close to a million dollars of work into their golf course. Since then, many of the holes can be considered hidden gems, with shiny new greens, new cart paths and several renovated tee boxes. Golf pro Mike Fernuik believes that among others, No. 5, a par-4, 411-yard hole, is among the shiniest of the gems. “It’s a dogleg right with water down the right side, trees on the left and surrounded by two bunkers,” Fernuik said. The hole – as most seemingly do – typically plays into the wind. “The fairway I wouldn’t say is too wide – maybe 20-30 yards,” Fernuik said. “But you have obstacles on the left and a pond on the right. It ranges in yardage from the men’s tees from 360 to 411 yards. It’s a challenging hole.”

The home exploded and the tapestry was shredded with shrapnel.” The family got out of Poland before the Germans invaded and went to England before finally moving to Canada. This family, he said, somehow got in touch with us and said they would like to donate the item to us. “Unfortunately, we don’t have the room to show that tapestry today. So, we very lovingly packed it away,” said Christopher. It is sealed in glass to protect it as best as they can until a time comes when they can display it for visitors.
