Men of A-Chord announce schedule

Alamo celebrates Christmas with Candy Land

By Herb Moering he transition with directors went just as planned as several hundred spectators enjoyed the City of Alamo’s Christmas celebration in “Candy Land” the evening of December 14. With Parks and Recreation Department Director Arnold Robles retiring earlier this month, the task of organizing the 10th annual illuminated parade, tree lighting ceremony and on-stage entertainment fell to Steve Vela, the recently named interim agency director. As entertainment drew to a close, Vela noted this year’s parade, with the “Candy Land” theme had 41 entries,

TCF Float entry deadline January 21

T

he Texas Citrus Fiesta in Mission is an event to look forward to every year. Each year the parade has a different theme and floats in the parade that are all decked out according to that theme using lively decorations and Valley products. This year’s theme is Space Odyssey Adventure to celebrate the anniversary of space exploration. The deadline to enter your float into this year’s parade, being held January 25, 2020, is January 21, 2020. Competitive categories include Antique cars, bicycles, church, golf carts, military, motorcycles, horses and two Winter Texan categories. The Winter Texan categories are based on size of the park. Winter Texan I is for parks with 199 or less spaces. Winter Texan II is for parks with 200 or more spaces. Most floats have to be decorated with a certain amount of citrus and Valley grown products. The Winter Texan floats should be decorated with one third citrus and the rest with Valley grown products or other

The golf cart entries are voted on workmanship, originality and adherence to the theme. A total of four golf carts will be allowed per entry. One quarter of the cart must be decorated or displayed with citrus. There is also a Valley Product Category that requires more work than the rest. The float must adhere to the parade theme and be decorated with at least two thirds citrus or any product grown in the Rio Grande Valley. Towing vehicle must also be decorated, but product is not re-

quired for the vehicle. A general category is also available to enter and require the one third, same as the Winter Texan float category. For more information, or to get a registration packet and the full rules and guidelines, visit the Texas Citrus Fiesta website at www.texascitrusfiesta.org. You can also find them on Facebook, call (956) 585-9724 or email them at info@texascitrusfiesta.org.

materials. The towing vehicle must also be decorated with one third citrus. Both must be decorated to fit the theme. The prizes awarded to the Winter Texan floats are the Precious Award, Winter Texan King and Queen Award and the Ruth Kissinger Award.

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.

the park attention shifted to the tall darkened Christmas tree on the plaza area. It wasn’t long before a 10-second countdown began with Mayor Martinez again doing the honors of pushing the button that lit up the several hundred white lights. The School choirs, dancers and cheerleader squads from John McKeever, Marcia Garza and Zeferino Farias Elementary Schools, Audie Murphy Middle School and Vanguard Mozart Academy were part of the on-going tradition started by Robles to expand the special evening event with entertainment since the schools were already in the parade. They took to the stage this year to present the magic of a “Candy Land” night of music, much to the delight of an audience of parents, Winter Texans and Alamo residents. One of the cutest was the young costumed Dazzlers Dancers from McKeever Elementary doing the well-known “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies.” Nearby youngsters were having their picture taken with Santa Claus who was one of the first in the parade lineup to arrive at the park. Some of the kids were joined by their parents and family members for a group picture with jolly old Saint Nick. The Alamo Fire Department’s little truck also drew families for photos. Families wandered through the Candy Land park following the entertainment, enjoying the fun evening that was blessed with such pleasant weather.

Newly elected Alamo City Commissioner Oscar Salinas came for the first time even though he lives only a few blocks away. “I was very surprised on the great turnout (of people) and we had good weather to boot” he said. He went on further to state, “It was an awesome event.” Alamo Mayor Diana Martinez, who rode aboard the big City of McAllen train with other commissioners, John McKeever Elementary School students and Alamo Youth Center kids, agreed that “it was a great parade.” This marked the third year that McAllen has lent the train to Alamo. She thanked the sister city for providing the train and staff to run it. “I am proud to say that Alamo and McAllen are the only two cities in the Rio Grande Valley that for the past seven years have been recognized by Kaboom, Inc. as a “Playful City USA Community.” The mayor noted she has been in every one of the illuminated parades and

recalled how the parade has grown in size over the past 10 years. It has gone beyond the fire trucks, police units, a couple of floats, a few school groups and a band. She credits much of the success to Robles, who picked up on the parade and tree lighting event when he came to Alamo from the City of Hidalgo seven years ago. Robles used some ideas from his previous employment, adding lights to the lower part of trees in Central Park and initiating

The day after – What will you resolve to do?

I

t’s the day after the day we have been waiting for. Such anticipation to have the family together for such a grand celebration. And then very quickly, it is all over. Of course, the house is a mess. Stockings are scattered all over the floor and gifts are stacked in the corners ready to be put away. Empty boxes filled with wrappings and ribbons need to be destroyed or carefully stored to be recycled next year. But now, we must move on - we pick up the trash, we put away the special dishes used just at Christmas time, we make those telephone calls to loved ones and friends who could not be with us. And we move on for this year is winding down with a new year just around the corner. January 2020 is upon us and it is time to think about our

New Year’s resolutions. Many resolutions are made - few are lived up to. Perhaps we should think a little more seriously about what we shall resolve to do in this coming year. Actually, New Year’s resolutions have a very long history and started even before the birth of Christ. In Roman mythology there was a King named Janus. This King had two faces and was placed at the head of their calendar. With his two faces he could look back at the events of the old year and at the same time he could look

“Many resolutions are made - few are lived up to.” forward to the future. Not a bad idea - we should look back

at our past, learn from our mistakes and from our accomplishments and use that knowledge as we make our resolutions for the next year. Have you ever wondered why so many resolutions are never kept? Maybe that is so because we give so little thought to the resolutions we make. Or maybe it is because so many resolutions are actually negatives. For instance, it is easy to say, “I resolve to quit smoking” or “I resolve to lose 20 pounds.” When we resolve, we promise. We promise ourselves that we will accomplish a certain thing without giving too much thought as to how our promise will be fulfilled. The word quit sounds negative as well as the word lose. Maybe a positive resolution would be easier to fulfill. How about “I am going to wake up with a smile every morning” or I will say “thank you” and “please” or even “I will treat everyone as I myself would like to be treated and I will do this regardless of their station in life, the color of their skin, the language they speak, the education they have or how much money or lack of that they may have.” Now that is positive thinking. It is time for all of us to think positive. Instead of thinking of ourselves and what we might resolve to do to make ourselves look better or feel better, let’ s broaden our resolu-

“We should look back at our past, learn from our mistakes and from our accomplishments...” My memory goes back to a children’s song with the words “If you can’t say something nice, don’ t say nothing at all.” Now there goes that negative again. How about “I will look for the good in everyone that I know, and I will greet even the stranger that I meet on the street with a smile and a hello.” Have a happy, blessed, positive and prosperous New Year.

In fact, they have been to two world championships and now Ann is organizing the 40th International Shuffleboard Association World Championship to be held at the Fun n Sun Resort in San Benito. Approximately 140 of the best shufflers from nine different countries are expected to take up 16 of the resort’s 17 indoor courts for the event, October 17-22, 2021. Engell, who says she has no title really at the park, is the event organizer. “We need this much time to get prepared for this event,” she said. “There’s a lot to be done.” The couple has been coming to the Valley for nine years and has spent the past seven at Sun n Fun. Evan, her husband, has been playing the sport for eight years. “He has shuffled longer, and he shuffled with his dad a few times,” Ann said. “Since we’ve been coming to the Valley, he plays more full time in the Winter. We stay for four months and have gotten to know people throughout the Valley.”

Ann said there are few places better than the Valley to prepare for this event. “The quality of play at least rivals what we went up against in Austria at that worlds championship,” she said. “There are great shufflers in the Valley and many of them play once a week, up to daily. If you play daily, you’re going to get better with all those repetitions. And the more you play with higher-skilled players, the better you become.” Ann said she comes from a competitive family. “That’s our spirit,” she said. “It’s a competitive spirit and it’s the whole family.” To get in touch with Ann Engell for more information on volunteering or sponsorship, you can email her at ann@ northshore.tax. She also noted the participation in the competition held in Austria in November. The Museum will be accepting vintage quilts through Friday, January 10, 2019. Quilts can be brought in Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. The Museum will be closed Dec. 23, 24, 25, and 31; and on Jan 1. It’s too good not to go I

t happens every single time, without fail. I will meet someone for lunch at the Griffin Grill, located at 1906 E. Griffin Pkwy. in Mission, and when I leave I swear that I will visit this wonderful eatery more often. But I don’t. Then, the next time the name pops up, I kick myself for not having gone there several more times. It’s that good. I took my 15-year-old daughter to the Griffin Grill for lunch recently for two reasons. I knew she would love the food and I was positive she’d really love how the quaint restaurant is decorated, especially for Christmas. I was right on both occasions. The place was full at about 1:30 p.m. on a weekday, but the ambiance was still wonderful as the Christmas music rose above the crowd chatting and clearly enjoying the place. The menu ranges from steaks to sandwiches, to fish, seafood, burgers, pasta and more. Each category has four to six items so it’s not a struggle to decide what to eat. Today I struggled over the salmon or mahi-mahi with a dill sauce on top. I chose the latter. It took Camilla less than a minute to decide, picking out the three-cheese grilled cheese sandwich. We ordered some guacamole and chips to start and the taste bud pleasantries soon began. The guacamole was fresh and plentiful. There was no reason to ration how much you wanted on each chip — there was going to be some left for sure. Camilla’s sandwich was thick with oozing melted cheeses in between two toasted slices of dark wheat bread. Just the contrast in colors made it look delectable, sitting next to a pile of hot, crispy fries. This was no kids’ menu grilled cheese sandwich; this was royalty. I enjoyed the other half of the sandwich later that night and it was still great — there’s just something about cheese that makes things great, so three cheeses were mind blowing. My fish was as good as I imagined. A little heavier than salmon, it was cooked to perfection, flaky but holding firm, the dill sauce not smothering it but just bringing out the flavor. The sauce also went amazingly well with a fork full of white rice. The dish also came with some fresh vegetables. When we left, we both agreed that this was a fantastic lunch, and I promised myself that I would be back soon. This time I mean it; it’s too good not to.
