We thank you

It seems as though 2019 has come to a close way too fast. We are just about halfway through our season and it has been great getting to know you better. It has been a pleasure working with you to help serve you and get the news you want to read. This holiday season I have seen parks go out of their way to make sure others have a nice holiday. It has been eye opening in seeing how many of you are so willing to give to the communities you reside in while in the Valley. Our feature this week is about the good work that Paradise Park in Harlingen did for two organizations – in a fairly short time. Other parks mentioned in this issue is Orange Grove, Alamo Rec, and the FCRV WT Chapter. On the Road with Jo even mentions a few parks like

Paradise Park ‘big advocates for helping others’ By Herb Moering In a first-time effort, Paradise Park RV Resort residents built a small mountain of food, school supplies, candy and personal hygiene items, which were placed on display in the clubhouse during the regular Friday lunch time social gathering on December 20. Sharon Bargel, who came up with the idea after watching something similar on Facebook, said the donated items are going to two ministries, Fishes and Loaves in Harlingen and Sow the Word that operates primarily in Nuevo Progreso, Mexico. FCRV WT Chapter remembers Vets during the holidays

By Nancy Herberholz FCRV WT Chapter Activity Charirman The FCRV Winter Texan chapter has been privileged to help the Veterans at the Alfredo Gonzales Texas State Veterans home for several years. One of the projects that the chapter works on, all year round, is furnishing stuffed animals. The memory care unit is one of the special places that uses the stuffed animals. The stuffed animals have a calming effect on the Veterans. One of the chapter couples, Judy and Mahlon Dickey happened to share the need for stuffed animals with their friends, Diane and Roger Gibson. Diane is an accomplished crocheter and has a unique hobby – she crochets stuffed animals. She asked Judy if she could crochet some of her homemade stuffed animals for the Veterans and Judy readily agreed.

Diane and her husband were honored for her contribution to the Veterans home at a recent luncheon and meeting held at the Riverside Club. The group thanks Diane Gibson and her husband Roger and all of the FCRV Winter Texans who have contributed to this project. The Veterans Home has 160 beds that stay full, most of the time, so there is a great need for constant donations. Many

of the FCRV Winter Texans, collect stuffed animals all winter and bring large amounts of them back to the valley, at the beginning of the winter with them, for the Veterans home. Pat Rozelle, who is a member of the FCRV Winter Texans, crochets beautiful lap blankets for the Veterans and Tim and Suzie Zich supply the Vet’s home, several times a year, with small beanie baby like animals, that Marlene and her angels use for bingo prizes. If a Vet wins Bingo, they get to pick an animal and then have to make the sound that particular animal makes, to keep their minds sharp. On December 23, many of the FCRV

Come to find out, Diane’s homemade crocheted animals are a favorite of the activities director, Marlene Mendez, and her staff of angels that work with the Veterans. The animals have a different feel than the furry stuffed animals and are much harder to pull pieces off. This is helpful for the safety of those Veterans in the memory care unit or those who are suffering from suicidal tendencies. Since the crocheted animals are so popular with the staff and Veterans, many of the FCRV Winter Texans have donated yarn, or money for yarn, for Diane to crochet more of them. It is a match made in heaven.

Winter Texans and some volunteers went to the Vets Home to give out signed Christmas cards, cookies, candy, cupcakes and many other goodies to ensure that the Vets know that they are not forgotten. FCRV thanks all who participated in any of these projects and are pleased to honor the vets who fought for our country.

The recently expanded Donna location is brimming with inventory and features the only indoor showroom in South Texas. Their lineup of RVs includes everything from pop-ups to Class A motorhomes. “The event is absolutely free all around,” said Dustin. “There are so many things to do and win. Plus, it’s a party like atmosphere.” This year the event will feature more vendors and, new to the event, a scavenger hunt. As in previous years, there will be free food, music, Kona snow cones, t-shirts, door prizes, medical screenings and more. Factory and supplier reps will be in attendance to answer questions and have some deals for those attending. This is an opportunity to check out hundreds of RV units in stock too. There will be more RVs than what can be shown at other RV shows throughout the Valley and elsewhere, said Dustin. It’s also a chance to see what deals may be available

on 2019 stock. The event will also feature a flea market like sale on all the extra RV stuff Ron Hoover has collected over the year – parts, hitches, etc. Most items will be at rock bottom prices or at least a great bargain to be found. The RGV Vipers will also be on hand giving away free tickets. “I like that we can give back to our customer base something other than offering the best service we can or the best prices we can offer,” said Dustin about why he enjoys holding the event. “We can show our appreciation to the Winter Texans coming to the Valley,” he added. “The event is a lot of fun. We invite everyone to attend. You’ll be glad you did.” Ron Hoover RV & Marine Center is located at 101 Expressway 83 in Donna (on the south side of the expressway). Parking will be available along North Ave. behind Ron Hoover. Shuttles will also be available providing rides to and from the parking lot both days.

Bill Reagan, left, at the podium, and Dr. Bill Harrison, spoke about their ministries and offered thanks for all the food and other supplies given by the Paradise Park residents. Dr. Bill Harrison, who directs Sow Bargel said she originally took the idea the Word, operates a program for feed- to park management and after it was preing children in Progreso, which received sented, residents strongly embraced the

proposal. She promoted the donations as “a way to give back to the community.” Stacey Flores, who has been Encore Corporation’s park manager for just two months, was happy to approve the project. Flores quickly learned how residents are into helping the community. “They are big advocates for helping others.” she said. Bargel asked park chaplain Jeff Hastings and his wife, Criss, to help with the new program. Jeff contacted the two ministries and the project got underway under the theme “Reverse Advent Calendar.” Each day during advent, park residents were asked to contribute a different item, starting with a spiral notebook on December 1, can of veggies the next day, followed by a can of fruit, bar of soap, small bag of candy, noodles, rice and etc. with the 20th being a bottle of laundry detergent. The total on Friday’s distribution day on the stage and in front was 54 bottles of laundry soap, 157 soap bars, 65 bottles of shampoo, 120 bags of pasta, 64 of beans and 63 of rice, 75 cans of tuna, 191 commercial-size cans and 310 small cans of fruit and vegetables, 66 notebooks,

112 coloring books and 95 boxes of crayons. Because the word got outside Paradise Park, Sue Kaneski, who lives in Weslaco’s Ranchero Village, showed up on distribution day with about 30 dresses, sizes three to five, and another 20 shorts and tops for the boys and girls in Progreso. She brought them down to the “Valley” this fall, made by a band of sewers from the American Lutheran Church in Long Prairie, Minnesota. They began providing the clothing, initially all made from pillowcases, about seven years ago for Sow the Word and since have added a few more ministries. Kaneski’s job has been to take care of the distribution, which this time also included school supplies and food items. Kaneski said, even her husband Dennis is involved in helping prepare packages in addition to financially supporting the effort. The park’s lunch time was turned into a time of celebration for what had been done. Before the start of the burger and chicken meal, a patriotic mixture of carols and other Christmas songs were played by jammers Bill Java, Rick Jennings, Tom Holmes and Jim Becker. Most of those attending wore red as a remembrance of the deployed U.S. Military troops. A number of residents sported red “Warrior 180 Foundation” shirts to mark the counseling provided by park chaplain Hastings to veterans suffering from PTSD.

Dr. Harrison noted the ministry expanded to providing school supplies and offering meals to pregnant women and nursing mothers. The latter is thought of as still feeding kids, only babies in these instances. Loaves and Fishes has been around in Harlingen since 1991, with the last 10 years under the directorship of Reagan. He told the audience that the initial effort was to help the homeless and later expanding it to those in the community, both in Harlingen and now also in Raymondville, in need of a hand. Reagan outlined the ministry starting with the Bread of Life dining hall, where some 350 meals a day are served, adding up to 12,000 meals a month. The Open Arms Homeless Shelter is a second effort. There is also New Hope Job Shop, Family Emergency Assistance and Great Physician Healthy Living with a full-time nurse and two mental health counselors. Both ministry directors indicated surprise at the amount of food and other supplies and thanked those present for their generosity. The last to speak was the park’s advisory board president, Terry Wenk, who added his thanks to residents for their participation in Reverse Advent Calendar. “No park, do I know of, to have given this much to the people of South Texas,” he concluded.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

Rusty Rierson back in the Valley

Rusty Rierson exploded onto the Winter Texan music scene last year, in his first full season in the Rio Grande Valley. His charming personality and laugh out loud wit combined with his musical talents - both with the guitar and his smooth and wide-ranging voice - make for an extremely fun and entertaining show for the throngs of audience members who attend his performances. His interaction with the audience goes beyond the scripted narratives. It seems as if each story and pleasantry exchanged before, during and after a show are real life, not from a performer “doing his time.” It’s not a surprise that he was named last year’s Male Vocalist of the Year by the Valley Star Awards. That’s just one reason that helps explain his demand and popularity. “I’m back this year because of all the love and kindness I was shown last year,” he said as he prepared for one of two shows in South Dakota before heading back to the Rio Grande Valley for two shows on January 5. “I’m hoping we get more opportunities in new places and more excitement as people come out to the show,” Rierson said. “I’m definitely not going to let up. I’m going to keep improving and keep getting better.” Audiences will laugh at his “Let’s go

to Texas,” song that he wrote especially for South Texas and Winter Texans, while he will also keep the smile on their faces with forever favorites such as “Sweet Caroline,” and John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” This year, Rierson said he will have some more rock n roll songs added to his playlist, noting that it seems to be growing among the Winter Texan population. That’s assuredly to come with more jokes and stories as he talks about growing up and life in general. One of the many highlights of his shows will undoubtedly be “Bumper Stickers on a Bentley,” a song he wrote and released earlier this year. The song, a mixture of rap and country, was No. 1 on the country charts for three weeks all over Europe. Its theme is a somewhat humorous, but thoughtfilled look at today’s tattoo craze, especially among females.

The idea to make the song a unique mixture of rap and country was something he didn’t have to mull over for too long. “It just came to me,” he said. “I knew right away it was the right thing to do.” As he toured the likes of Ireland, Scotland and London since last year’s Winter Texan season, the song continued to climb the charts. His instincts were spot on. Rierson made his first trip to the Valley two years ago for the Winter Texan showcase. He drove from the snowy and icy tundra from home to South Texas with a broken heater and said he had to make several stops just to thaw out. The trip, however, was a good one as he remained busy throughout the Winter season then and is busier now. Rierson, tagged as a country music traditionalist, grew up on the family farm in

South central Kansas and earned a master’s degree in animal science from Kansas State. He has released several albums, toured across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Scotland and London, enjoys writing and singing about the positive aspects of life, while also reflecting on events and people who have played a major role in his life. His show is engaging, fun and entertaining - it’s one of the must-see shows this year, and every year. “I’m thankful to all who came out last year,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones this year.” His full schedule can be found in his ad in our Wintertainers section – but here it is as well – January 5, 3-5p.m., Texas Trails, Pharr; January 5, 7 p.m., Southern Comfort, Weslaco; January 6, 7-9 p.m., Blue Bonnet, Mission; January 7, 7-9 p.m., Tropic Star, Pharr; January 8, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Bit-O-Heaven, Donna; January 9, 7-9 p.m., Palmdale, Los Fresnos; January 19, 2-4 p.m., La Hacienda Estates, Alamo; January 22, Kansas Day Celebration, Trophy Gardens, Alamo; and January 26, 6-8 p.m., Rio Hondo Baptist Church. 2020 Census provides job opportunities

By Nadia Ramlagan AUSTIN, Texas -- Nearly 100 days are left before the 2020 Census count begins, and advocates for Texans over age 50 say this massive undertaking is an opportunity for people looking for short-term work. Tina Tran, state director of AARP Texas, says her organization is helping older residents who want to get involved to become census-takers in their communities. “The Census is a great opportunity for particularly older workers who are looking for flexible work and short-term work,” says Tran. “And the Census is looking at adding about 500,000 temporary workers.” Texas is one of five states in the nation that has chosen not to establish a statewide “Complete Count” committee, tasked with increasing awareness and motivating residents to participate in the 2020 Census. Without a state count committee, Tran adds it’s even more important that schools and local organizations ensure all families

are educated about the census. “It is really important that we get an accurate count, because resources and representation is on the line,” says Tran. “Our officials estimate that even a 1% undercount could result in lost millions of dollars for our state.” Tran points out that understanding how the census works can help protect people against potential scams. For instance, she says the Census Bureau doesn’t send emails to individuals, and if you receive an email claiming to be from the census, it’s a scam. “Often, scammers will use this as a way to get access to your Social Security number,” says Tran. “They also may ask for bank account or credit card numbers. The census will not demand any money or threaten any jail time for not participating.” If you suspect a scam, Tran says contact the Census Bureau and your local police department. You can also call the AARP Fraud Watch Network hotline at 877-908-3360.

ARVP’s Coat and Sweater Drive adds warmth to the season

To make freezing temperatures a little more bearable for those in need, Alamo Rec-Veh Park (ARVP) residents donated 81 coats and sweaters to charity before Christmas. Due to Park Manager Barbara Hamel’s concern about those who might suffer from the cold this winter, the park’s first Coat and Sweater Drive resulted. Before it began, ARVP resident Fred Meier made arrangements with Al-

amo’s Heavenly Splendor Church pastor Josh Gutiérrez to distribute the collected winter garments. ARVP resident Colleen Benoit decorated the very large collection box. Within a couple of days, the container was filled. When Fred and Pastor Josh came to collect the warm clothing, the original box had been filled and emptied six times.

After playing a Christmas Concert on December 8th at Our Savior Lutheran Church the Rio Grande Valley Concert Band is tuning up for its 22nd season of concert performances. Since 1998 both Valley residents and Winter Texans have joined forces to create this seasonal band which only performs December thru March. WINTER TEXAN TIMES

MOSTH hosts Winter Texan Day

Winter Texan Wednesday is a program that welcomes Winter Texans and retirees to enjoy an afternoon at the Museum of South Texas History. The museum, which is located in Edinburg, features a presentation followed by a highlight tour of part of a museum exhibit. The first program, titled “Sal del Rey,” with guest speaker Joe Vidales Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 3 p.m. North of Edinburg resides a large salt lake that the early Spanish settlers along the Rio Grande claimed for the Spanish crown. The salt lake was referred to as Sal del Rey, or “Salt of the King.” Salt at the time was considered a valuable resource because of its preservative qualities. Vidales, a Weslaco Museum volunteer,

will discuss the origins of the salt lake and its importance to the native peoples, Spanish settlers and the state of Texas. Following the presentation, visitors can join a highlight tour of part of the River Frontier gallery, which includes history on a prehistoric mosasaur and Spanish exploration in the region. Winter Texan Wednesday is included in the fee for regular museum admission. No reservations are required. Resort/park groups are welcome to enjoy this program. Winter Texan Wednesday will be a bi-weekly event at the museum with a different topic each time. For more information, please contact the museum at (956) 383-6911 or visit mosthistory.org/events.
