The show features exhibits by carvers, carving instructors, demonstrations, tool vendors, and wood vendors. Door prizes will be given away every 30 minutes with three large door prizes given at the end of the show. Table space may be rented by both commercial and non-commercial exhibitors. Entries will be judged by Debbe Edwards and Rich Wetherbee. Edwards is a Native American Indian sculptor from Northeast Oklahoma. She is a member of the Cherokee Nation. She started her carving in wood in 1990 after receiving a small set of tools as a Christmas present. She became instantly hooked, started attending woodcarving shows and entering her pieces into competitions. Edwards has won many Best of Show and Judges Choice Awards with her animal sculptures. In 1994 she began teaching seminar classes and has taught classes throughout the United State and Canada. She began sculpting in stone in 1998 and produced bronzes of some of her original wood sculptures. Her art represents her life of working with animals. Much attention is given to detail, character and mood in each piece - creating very life-like animal sculptures. Wetherbee began carving around 1982. His father, an excellent carver himself, let Wetherbee carry a jackknife and taught him the basics of grain direction and stop cuts. He can remember getting acquainted with the National Wood Carvers Museum in Monument, Colorado in the mid 70’s, making him get hooked on woodcarving. Wetherbee began doing art shows, displaying and selling his work through-

out the United States in the early 80’s. He began his own studio in the mid 80’s. In his studio he reproduces his pieces in molds to sell. He is a member of the Caricature Carvers of America, which he and a group of guys formed to promote the art of caricature carving. He teaches woodcarving and design throughout the United States. Dale and Gayle love coming to the Valley

2 By Carina A. Brunson t ale and Gayle Eisenhaur, or Dale r and Gayle, look forward to comd oing to the Valley every year. This is their f10th year to be entertaining full time and )they look forward to another fun filled year playing -music for the ypeople, espe-cially the fans and friends mthey love so edearly. . “We love -to expose new -people to our .music,” they said. “But there is so much comfort in seeing all of the familiar faces out there in our audience.” They love coming down to the Rio Grande Valley, just like other Winter Texans, for the mild winter weather. But for an entertainer, it is especially nice to be able to load and unload equipment and not do it in the cold, snow, or ice. Dale and Gayle say they love the cultures that they can experience down here too. You have the Hispanic culture everywhere, yet we get to spend a lot of time with Winter Texans from way up north or into Canada. “This is all quite a bit different than where we grew up in northern Oklaho- ma.” . Dale especially looks forward to coming down to the Valley because, down rhere, he is the pastor at their park every -Sunday, and is now in his fourth year. He .only gets to preach a few times elsewhere ,as he fills in here and there. n “It brings us a lot closer to God when ryou prepare all week for that Sunday sermon and Gayle picking out the songs that ywe will sing,” said Dale. s Dale had an experience in 2018 where uhe wasn’t breathing and had to receive CPR to bring him back. This experience -led him to needing a new aortic valve and egave him a new purpose in life. Every time they do a gospel show at a echurch or park, Dale will give his testimoony to “let everyone know that God has the -power over life and death for each of us.” “We hope that we will always give God the glory every time we perform.” Dale and Gayle have a complete sound

D

and can play at dances as well as a full variety of shows, and music for almost any venue. Dale and Gayle have a 750 plus song repertoire consisting of everything from classic and current country, folk, cowboy, gospel, rock and pop, and comedy songs. They currently have recorded, and offer, eight different CD’s and four DVD videos of some of their shows they’ve done here in the Valley. One of their most popular parts of their show has been a comedy skit with Ms. Crabapple. The skit is called “Let Me Speak to the Manager” and is a hilarious situation in which Ms. Crabapple calls the park manager and is always complaining about common problems that all parks face, except she really knows how to “explain” it to the manager. They love to interact with their audience and involve them. In any given show, you might see them put together a “kazoo band,” have “walking the dog” races, or have singing competitions between the men and the women. Their version of “Ghost Riders in the Sky” is a popular audience interaction song. You can quickly tell they love to entertain; they love what they do, and they love their audience – But more than that, they love each other and are always giving each other that special look, smile or wink during their shows. Through their entertaining, they have achieved many of their goals. As they meet one goal, they continue to stretch and reach for bigger goals. They are now trying to impress enough people to someday get good enough to get nominated for a Valley Star Award. Another goal is to play at least once in every park in the Valley. “We are proud that once we play in a park, we nearly always get asked back to play again the next year. While in the Valley, you can find See LOVE pg. 33

I sat at my table, overlooking the Laguna Madre at Pirate’s Landing, grabbed my menu and started perusing. When my server reached me not long after I simply asked him, “What’s

It’s great.” There was no “everything on the menu is great,” or “people order this a lot.” I asked for the best and he gave me a straightforward answer. So that’s what I ordered, along with an appetizer of stuffed mushrooms. WTT_CouponConeorDish_Combo_3.218x3.09.indd 1 10/3/2019 1:13 Given the amount of clientele in the restaurant, I was a little surprised at how quickly the six large (and definitely stuffed) mushrooms were delivered. There was enough sauce One of the area’s Top Restaurants EARLY BIRD SPECIAL on the plate to roll the delectable around in and add according to Trip Advisor more, which is a great way to make all visitors happy. Soon after, the Red Fish Rockefeller appeared with my two sides - cole slaw and potato salad - and I dug Dinner Menu item 1906 E. Griffin Parkway Any in. The sauce was not overpowering in flavor and was a terrific compliment for the fish which, while flakey also had a little bit of firmness to it and with the large portion - all over a bed of rice - made it more than a challenge to finish. I, however, was up for it. I chose my fish blackened, but it wasn’t over powerful. In fact, the entire dish was made perfectly for me to use one of the restaurant’s several choices for a hot sauce. This truly made the fish dish a masterpiece. It enhanced the smooth, mild flavors of the fish, rice and sauce adding just a tiny kick of heat. I have a hard time sometimes picking something from a menu as varied as this one. Having a server guide me in such a polite and confident way, answering the question exactly as I presented it, made for a terrific dining experience. I don’t know if the Red Fish Rockefeller was the best on the menu, but it certainly was delicious. Hopefully, I’ll get the same server next time and he’ll be able to answer my next question - what’s the second-best thing on your menu?

Helen Russell and Co.: Not just a side thing F

or a moment you are listening to and watching a Willie Nelson “lookalike” perform and next thing you know it, you’re listening to, and watching, a version of Waylon Jennings. Then it’s Willie. Then it’s Waylon. Willie. Waylon. No, it’s not a reunion of the Highway Men, which also included Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash. It’s Helen Russell of Helen Russell and Company, the duo that has entertained audiences across the country and, now for the fourth straight year, the Rio Grande Valley’s Winter Texans. The Willie/Waylon combination is Helen, who will make up half of her face to look like Willie - hair and all - and the other half to resemble Waylon. It helps that she sounds like two outlaw country singers. It’s a funny and entertaining piece of a show that mixes great music, an abundance of humor and a bunch of audience interaction. And the best part is that it’s just a portion of the show that will keep fans in attendance enjoying the performance, reminiscing of past happy times and leaving with a smile on their faces, and a tune or two in their heads. There’s a whole lot more in store. “I’ve seen other entertainers do the flip face thing walking back and forth on

stage,” Helen said. “It’s never been Willie and Waylon so I looked at my husband and said ‘let’s see if I can put a deal on that I can wear.’” Audiences have fallen in love with the performance. But that’s the goal of Helen Russell and Co., winners of the Valley Star Award for Best Small Band Variety Show for the past two years. This year’s show will bring with it even more variety. The show, entitled “A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock and Roll,” brings with it some classic rock and roll title along with well-known country

songs, folk songs and, well, a little bit of just about everything else, including some impressive banjo pickin’. “We want our audiences to be entertained,” Helen said. “We (Helen and Elvis) have been a duo since the mid80s. We weren’t doing shows back then, but we were playing at places and then having a dance. But we’ve been strong on shows for the past 1012 years.” T h e difference between playing a show and a dance come down to what else is being offered outside just the singing and music. In Helen Russell and

Co.’s case, that’s a lot. “We are a high energy show and we have a different show every single year,” Helen said. “It’s all live music, there are no pre-recorded tracks, it appeals to everybody and we do all genres of music.” Helen will also do spot on impersonations of Cher and Dolly Parton and others. The duo also makes sure to pay respect to Veterans at each show. “To see their faces light up during our tribute is something very special every time for us,” Helen said. “They are very near and dear to us.” Helen said they noticed that rock and roll was trending more with the Valley’s winter residents and therefore changed the name of the show, but also said they are not just all about country or all about rock. “We are about all genres,” Helen said. “We are always trying to think out of the box and bringing something different so people will laugh. We want them to forget about their aches and pains or what stresses them and just enjoy the songs, the interaction and the humor. “Our show is to entertain. We are versatile - from bluegrass to country to rock and more. If people have seen it before they’ll love the new music.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES OMELET

From Victoria Palms management has figured out that Thursday, January 16 will be that special day when they will celebrate Dave Rountree — The Omelet Guy as he is known across the Valley — and his amazing milestone while making omelets at the Winter Texan RV park and resort in Donna. “We are going to celebrate Dave that day,” said restaurant supervisor Lionel Rodriguez. “People come in and will just ask for the “tall omelet guy all the time. Families will bring their kids in to have that full breakfast experience with Dave.” The restaurant will open at 7 a.m., just like normal. But it will be anything but a normal breakfast as someone will get the lucky plate signifying the 100,000th omelet. “Dave has that spunk and personality; his jokes can get to any Winter Texan. He has just great qualities and is an amazing people person.” Rodriguez said his favorite omelet will

In fact, there are so many regulars that he remembers what they like. I don’t know how he can keep track of so many orders. “The other great thing is he will bring your order to you if he has a chance and then sit at your table. His interaction with customers is just a part of that omelet/ breakfast experience. He is just a great part of this team.” Rountree started his career as a breakfast cook not long after graduating high school from PSJA and hitchhiking all the way to St. Louis in 1969. “I started as a breakfast cook in St. Louis and now I’m a breakfast cook here,” he said. “With a whole lot of mileage in between.” With that mileage comes plenty of fascinating tales, many of which will be shared as he cooks up omelets leading to, and then surpassing, No. 100,000 on January 16. “It’s just an omelet,” Dave will say. “It’s not rocket science, or I wouldn’t be doing it.”

Water – a blessing to the RGV

W

hat is the most important natural resource to a farmer? Probably water - a commodity that we just can’t do without. Most of our water supply in the Rio Grande Valley comes from the Rio Grande River or as it is called in Mexico the Rio Bravo del Norte - the brave, wild river of the North. The Rio Grande bends and twists like a snake which impedes the quick drainage of water into the Gulf of Mexico. Heavy rains generally occur twice a year - once in the Spring or early summer and again in the Fall. Before the dams were built to help store this excess water, the Rio Grande would overflow its banks. Since the land in the Rio Grande Valley gently slopes towards the South and East, the slowly moving flood waters left deposits of rich silt in areas that produced a sandy loam soil. Some areas though, would have water standing and the soil

would leach out causing other areas to become clay and even some to be considered as salty. So, we cannot say that the entire Rio Grande Valley was rich sandy loam soil, but we can say that water helped to develop the rich sandy loam that we do have. But good soil without water will not produce the lush landscape and the bountiful crops that we have. We must have water. Our area is considered as arid. Without water, we could not exist. In the early l 900’s, ingenious settlers realized that the Rio Grande River could serve to irrigate their crops and help them through the long periods of heat, wind and drought that plague our area. Irrigation Districts were designated, farmers were taxed to help support the Irrigation Districts, and water was allotted by what is called an acre foot. Water that had helped to produce the rich soil was now being used to

www.golf.pharr-tx.gov golf@pharr-tx.gov

aid in the production of crops. This system is still being used. These ingenious farmers who initiated the irrigation system were soon producing so much sugar cane, vegetables and citrus that a market had to be found to purchase the produce. Fortunately, the railroad had come to the Valley and the produce could be moved to market - but not without ice to keep the produce fresh. Again, water was needed to produce the ice that was so important in moving the produce to market. By the time the train cars reached Kingsville the ice had to be replenished. Today, the refrigerator trucks and train cars carrying produce do not have to be replenished with ice. A remnant from this period of history is in the old icehouse in Kingsville - now housing the Henrietta Memorial Museum. If you want to see the original icehouse, visit the Henrietta Memorial Museum or go on the King Ranch Tour that includes the museum. Besides the King Ranch hunting car, the saddles and guns on exhibit in the museum, you will probably see salt residue on the mortar in the brick walls as salt was used in the preparation of ice. WATER - it truly is a necessity; it is our life blood. The Rio Grande Valley is a delta, a flood plain. This becomes all too evident when we have the Spring and Fall heavy rains. Almost every city in the Rio Grande Valley suffered from too much water in the aftermath of Hurricane Beulah in 1967. We should learn to appreciate and re-

spect water. Even so, we will continue to have torrential rains that might not drain off fast enough. But I would not want to live anywhere else. I love my Valley home!

MFD reminding residents Texas A&M Singing Cadets Perform Tomorrow about heater safety Heaters can be a safety hazard if used improperly

D

uring cold spells, Rio Grande Valley residents may be trying to stay warm by using heating equipment in their homes. However, using heaters carelessly can cause serious damage, injuries and even death. Mission firefighters are encouraging all residents to learn how to prevent heater fires. By developing safe habits, you can reduce your risk of a fire breaking out. The Mission Fire Department recommends these guidelines for preventing heater fires: Keep all heaters at least three feet away from combustible objects, such as walls, curtains, drapes and furniture, especially beds. Use a yardstick or meter stick to measure the distance. Be sure your heating equipment is in good operating condition. Watch for worn electrical cords, gas leaks or faulty switches. Keep your heating equipment (including ducting) clean. Don’t use the heater if it is damaged. Have your heating equipment, serviced by a qualified expert at least once a year. Check both central systems and portable

equipment. Have your fireplace, wood burning stove and chimney inspected and cleaned at least once a year. Follow all instructions for your heating equipment EXACTLY and re-read all the instructions before starting your heater. Be sure all heaters, stoves, fireplaces and chimneys are properly installed and insulated. Touch nearby floors and walls. If they are warm or hot, the stove or chimney could be too close and start a fire. Wear close-fitting pajamas or night clothes. Avoid loose, billowy gowns or robes. This will reduce the risk of igniting your clothes by contacting heaters or cook stoves. Warn senior citizens and children to stay away from heaters. Be sure there is adequate ventilation in any area where there is an open flame. The flame in your heater needs fresh air. Keep the central gas heating system ventilation ducts open. Provide ventilation for wood- or gas-fueled heaters by opening a window.

Brett Marshall performs January 13 B

rett Marshall will be celebrating his 10th year anniversary of his Winter Concert series with a performance on January 13. He will be kicking off with The Disclaimers Jazz Quartet, performing an array of early jazz standards from the Great American Songbook along with some blues, bossanovas and their reimagined renditions of tunes from the 60’s and 70’s. This group began to form a few years ago when Brett started having Adrian

Foncerrada, Jr. and his brother Luis play with him during his set on Tuesday nights at El Hueso de Fraile. The Foncerrada brothers are part of a very musical family that own and operate the coffee shop in downtown Brownsville, which features live music every night. Dr. Bob Vastano, a band director who plays trumpet for Brett’s yearly February concert, began playing with the trio on a regular basis forming what is now called Brett Marshall and The Disclaimers Jazz Quartet.

Brett Marshall will be on piano and vocals, Dr. Bob Vastano will be on trumpet and flugelhorn, Adrian Foncerrada, Jr. will be on upright and electric bass, Luis Foncerrada will be on drums, and special guest, Justin Wilson will be spicing it up with a variety of percussion instruments. The group focuses on unique jazz oriented arrangement of vintage songs. The doors for the event open at 6:15 p.m., with the concert starting at 7 p.m. Snack and cash bar will be available.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at www.eventbrite.com The Port Isabel Event and Cultural Center is located at 309 E. Railroad Ave. He will hold another concert on February 10.
