New cement track at Ranchero Village opens

Welcome to the Rio Grande Valley, home of what seems to be the new NASCAR world of remote-control racing. Possibly the hottest thing to come to the hottest part of the nation in years, RC racing has done more than taken the Winter Texan world by storm. It has consumed it. The latest and newest development of the craze was celebrated last week as Ranchero Village in Weslaco as the park cut the ribbon on the Valley’s first cement racetrack. Just as in NASCAR, where there are shot tracks, flat tracks, high-banked tracks See TRACK pg. 10

It’s time to vote for your favorite Wintertainers

Shows and dances hosted by mobile home and RV parks and resorts are attended in numbers by the Winter Texans that spend their winters here in the Rio Grande Valley. The parks and resorts spend a lot of effort getting popular wintertainers to perform at their venues. Each year, the Valley Star Awards, hosted by Robert Ferguson and the Winter Texan Times, presents awards to the Rio Grande Valley’s top Winter Texan entertainers – are as we call them, “Wintertainers™.” This year’s Valley Star Awards will be held on Wednesday, February 19, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Mission Bell Resort. Lunch will be available from 12 to 1 p.m. So now it’s time to vote for your favorite Wintertainers™ - and the Entertainer of the Year for 2020. Most nominees are familiar names. Second showcase did not disappoint

Shelly and Donna

suring us – “This isn’t how she sing all the time,” – before showing what else their voices could do. Ron and Jan Easter performed some Neil Diamon and some comedy as well. Williamson Branch has truly grown up – the girls have anyway. That young one really has a voice that she enjoys sharing with everyone. She was out in the crowd getting people active in their music. You can tell they love what they do. She has some fire in her. The Colliers, although performing a little bit of country and some old rock and roll, said they can play and sing anything from Merle Haggard to

While there were a lot of familiar names at the first Showcase, I was not familiar with more than half of the Wintertainers™ on the list to perform at the second Showcase. The activity director’s association and Robert and Billie Ferguson put on two showcase events every year to help activity directors book entertainment for next year. The Showcase allows the activity directors to get a sampling of what the Wintertainers™ can offer. Even though I was not able to stay for this Showcase, I enjoyed every minute I was there. Only recognizing about six of Mountain Highway the performers on the list, I was eager to see what the others had to offer. The room was full of laughter and clapping – as just about every Wintertainers™ had a joke to tell. Spittin’ Image, and several others, like Williamson Branch, brought out the belly laughter and cheers from the crowd. Other Wintertainers™ included Night Ryders, Absolutely Country, Definitely Gospel, Rudi Harst, Roger Kenaston Band, Shake, Rattle & Roll, Shelly and Darren, Regan James, Rusty Rierson, Greg Jones, Golden Oldies, The Colliers, Poison Ivey, 2 Country4Nashville, Lindley Creek, Colleen Reinhardt, Ron Moshier, The Band Wanted, and Mountain Highway. All of them came with the intent to entertain and book some shows. Even more Wintertainers™ were there to watch, to book and mingle with the other entertainRick Dodson ers. Absolutely Country, Definitely Gospel’s beautiful voices truly made their country and gospel music more heartfelt. Led Zeppelin. Rudi Harst was mainly comedy music. They sang some Oak Ridge Boys and He sang a song about getting old. He also well-known gospel songs. Shelly and Darren did an Edith and Ar- played the harmonica, his guitar and a chie Bunker imitation with Darren reas- mandolin, among other instruments.

Night Ryders did some old-time rock and roll like “Pretty Woman” and “Johnny B Good.” They weren’t all rock though, they even sang “Neon Moon.” Colleen Reinhardt gave a wonderful performance on piano and some yodeling. It is a pleasure and so fortunate that we have these Wintertainers™ that can come down here and entertain you Winter Texans. The Fergusons have done a great job in coordinating these events to get these Wintertainers™ into your

parks. I look forward to catching many shows in the future by some of these very talented performers. We try to feature as many of these Wintertainers™ as we can in our paper and our website. So, don’t forget to check out our paper every week – for their ads or a story – and check our website where you can find the profiles for most of them too.

Steve and Jean Fisher met 30 years ago while truck driving across the United States. In those 30 years, they have made an effort to choose a charity to donate to each year. Jean, with growing up in foster homes, always felt a need to give to children in need. She remembers being told by her last home that she would be a welfare brat and a nobody the rest of her life. This gave her determination to set a goal in her life. At 18 she was put out on her own where she got part time jobs to put herself through beauty school. Jean was hired by a beauty salon corporation where she worked hard and was promoted to CEO to manage 15 salons in the New York City area. Jean also won the Most Outstanding Performance Award for all employees in seven countries. Eventually, Jean decided she wanted to do something different, and put herself through truck driving school. This is where she met Steve, and they started driving together – hitting some records for the miles they were driving – with Jean winning one for being one of the few female drivers to receive the One Million Mile Award. Because they enjoy giving back and sharing their blessings with others, Christmas is their favorite time of year. “It’s such a big part of our lives,” said Steve. The first year being a Winter Texan, they stayed at W&I Resort in Mission. On a day trip to the Rio Grande Valley Outlet Malls, they met some kids from San Benito. They were with an art class collecting stuffed animals for the Sunny Glen Children’s Orphanage. Jean, knowing what it was like growing up without parents, was touched by this.

The couple proceeded to go to Toys R Us and the Disney Store and bought over $4,000 in stuff animals. The Fisher’s, liking the beach, have been residing at South Padre Island for the last three years now. Here they have donated to Louie’s Backyard Toys for Tots fundraising. This past Christmas, the Fisher’s went to the United Methodist Church in Port Isabel to see if they had needy families they could help. They were told they had an Angel Tree and they were more than welcome to take one. Jean said, “How about if we take 15 girls and 15 boys.” The church was overwhelmed with their generosity. Jean and Steve took a trip to Wal-Mart and returned to the church with 133 toys for those families. They didn’t stop there. While in Brownsville a day later, there was a Sheriff’s Deputy standing outside with a sign on a cart that said – Cameron County Sheriff’s Toy Drive. They stopped and talked with the deputy, asking her questions, and only seeing two toys in the cart they walked into Wal-Mart. “We looked at each other and said, ‘You know what to do’.” With Jean going to the girls’ aisle, and me to the boys, we filled many carts, said Steve. We went outside and let the deputy know we had left some carts full of toys for her. They not only filled up one or two carts, but seven. With other errands to run, we felt like we wanted to do more, especially after the deputy told us the toys were for the neediest of the needy in the Valley. Jean and Steve went to another WalMart and bought so many toys, they did See GIVES pg. 29

TRACK

From pg. 1

and more, with the addition of cement to its repertoire of track choices, RC drivers can do more than just go race. Now they can learn how to set up their cars to maneuver the varying tracks, banks and surfaces. When residents of the park left last March or April, the track that is now gleaming-white cement - similar to the high banks of Dover (Delaware) Motor

Speedway – they left a dirt track in its place. Upon their arrival, the newest of the surfaces in South Texas was almost ready for what last week’s culmination of work led up to. “The owner (Walt Piper) said he wanted to have the premier track in the Valley,” said Jerry Hudson, who is originally from Missouri but lives full time now at Ranchero. “So, he went and paid for ev-

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

erything. It’s a top-notch facility and the only one of its kind down here.” Sandy Piper, Walt’s daughter, said that she will soon be taking over the area, and was pleased to not just hear about the park residents’ excitement to have the additional track – they also have a grass track – but to learn that other parks wanted to check out the high-flying, high-banked cement track. “We’ve had people move in just for this track,” she said. “There’s a lot of excitement and the whole purpose is to have more options to have fun. And this is such a unique track, that is drawing a lot of interest as well. Its’ a fun time.” The track is approximately 240 feet long, measuring around the outer rim. The banks on either end look to be between 12-17 degrees. The higher the banking, the more speed a car can take a turn at. Last week, a few “drivers” were testing the different “lines” to see what the fastest way

around the track is. Of course, just like in NASCAR and other racing affiliations, fans are awestruck by the sheer speed and movement of the cars – but they’re also waiting for “the big one” like at Talladega or Daytona Motor, the wreck that 10-15 cars are all caught up in. The difference is, lives are not at stake – except maybe some of the pieces of a banged up car. “As far as speed, we don’t know that yet,” said Hudson, vice president of the Ranchero Village Fender Benders. “But we do have a timer and as of today the fastest time is about 5.5 seconds. That’s a pretty good time, but as we get better, you’ll see quicker times. We’re just getting used to this cement. It’s fast.”

MHM screens She Came to the Valley

Mission Historical Museum will have a special screening of She Came to the Valley on Wednesday, February 5. The movie is based on Cleo Dawson’s novel of the same title. The book is about the “saga of a Dawson’s family battling for life and love along the raging Rio Grande.” It is said to be based on Dawson’s mother’s experi-

ences. The film was shot in South Texas’ Rio Grande Valley and Oklahoma. In its first run it broke weekend attendance records at Rio Grande theatres. There will be two showings – 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tickets are $5, and it includes the book. Mission Historical Museum is located at 900 Doherty Ave.

King Ranch tours teach history and farming

What is it like to be retired? There is a difference in being retired and in slowing down. Most of the people who come to the Rio Grande Valley for the winter are not really retired, they have just slowed down. They are sometimes even more active here than they are back home. They keep busy helping their neighbor, giving back to the community, doing volunteer work at their church or pitching in as they help to prepare meals at the RV parks where they stay. And they do this until it warms up back home. Their minds are just as eager to learn as they always were. Since it is said that our Rio Grande Valley is a world unto itself, most of the Winter Texans want to learn more about “our world”. But as soon as it warms up, the itchy foot wants to put the petal to the metal and head for home. Some even leave too early and are caught in a snowstorm in route. Just because the farmers are planting in the Rio Grande Valley doesn’t mean it is planting time back

home. Stay a little longer, folks, we enjoy having you here! Wherever you may be, the best way to learn about any area is to take a guided, narrated tour. If you are from a farming area, the Farm Tour, the King Ranch Tour and especially the King Ranch Farm Tour are highly recommended. If you are planning on taking a Farm Tour or a King Ranch Farm Tour, it does become important to watch the fields. Planting time comes early for us in the Rio Grande Valley - generally around mid-February. On the King Ranch, they actually take the temperature of the soil - and when the soil reaches the right temperature, then it is time to plant. Now, that’s down to a real science. Farming on the King Ranch is just a bit different than what most of us can imagine. As you drive through the King Ranch Farm area, look to the right of the road. The furrows stretch for three miles. Look to the left, the furrows stretch for three

miles. Mind boggling! Not only are the rows long, they are as straight as can be. No doubt the driver that laid out those rows was equipped with instruments that kept the rows even and straight. No such equipment existed in earlier times. Old timers didn’t much admire anyone who couldn’t plow straight. A favorite saying among farmers about someone who wasn’t worth his salt was “He can’t even plow a straight row”. The road through the field leads to a state-of-the-art cotton gin. Although the gin won’t be in operation during the winter, the experienced King Ranch guide will tell you in detail how the gin operates. If we are lucky, we will see a huge mound of grain inside a large storage shed. Yes, they rotate their crops just like all good farmers do. One year, one field is planted in cotton, the other in grain. Next year, crops are reversed - the cotton field becomes a grain field and the grain field becomes a cotton field. There is a lot of history to be told about the King Ranch - in fact, on the tour you will hear about some “firsts” that occurred on the King Ranch. The King Ranch Tour includes the Historical Tour on the 12-mile loop road that runs through the ranch, plus the Henrietta Memorial Museum and the Bar-B-Que lunch that, weather permitting, will be served in the Cesar Kleberg Camp House. It is said that the cowboys spent their last night in the Camp House before heading out on the cattle drive to take the cattle to market.

JANUARY 22, 2020 25

You might say that the King Ranch Farm Tour is an enhanced King Ranch Tour. The extras are the tour to the Farm and the tour to the Feed Lot. At the Feed Lot you will see where beef are being fattened up before they are sold. What a contrast to the cattle you saw on the 12-mile loop road. There seems to be two types of herds on the King Ranch - those beautiful thoroughbreds you saw as we drove through the Ranch and the ordinary looking cattle at the Feed Lot. The thoroughbreds are mainly raised and sold for breeding and the ordinary cattle are sold and butchered for the meat market. Whatever tour you take - be it the King Ranch, the King Ranch Farm Tour or a regular Farm Tour - you will learn a lot about the Rio Grande Valley. They are educational and fun days. See you soon!

SPI CVB names January 23rd Cook Your Catch Day

January 23rd has been named Cook Your Catch Day by the avid anglers and cuisine fans of South Padre Island. The Island is celebrating their first-ever Cook Your Catch Day with a VIP fishing trip and Chef’s table dinner for local and regional influencers, tips from f i s h i n g guides on techniques for catching different species, ideas from SPI chefs on how to make the most of every catch, and a call for the best fish stories on social media. Enjoying freshly caught fish is a tradition on this tropical Texas island. With Island restaurants renowned for their fish recipes and great Redfish and Drum in the bay, SPI is the perfect Gulf-to-Table

experience. “The Island is not only a hub for some pretty dedicated anglers, it’s also home

to very talented chefs who know how to bring out the best in fresh fish,” noted South Padre Island Convention and Visitor Bureau executive director Ed Caum, himself an avid angler and foodie. From Redfish to Drum to Snapper to shrimp and more, this Texas fishing mec-

There are currently eight restaurants participating in the event – Blackbeards, Cap’n Roy’s, Padre Island Brewing Company, Painted Marlin Grille, Parrot Eyes Restaurant and Bar, Pier 19, Sea Ranch Restaurant and Tom and Jerry’s. Skilled fish cleaners are available at various locations on the island. Fishing licenses are also available at several locations in Port Isabel and SPI. Participants are asked to have their catch cleaned and filleted on the dock (there are people who perform this service). Then you can transport your catch to the restaurant in an icefilled cooler. The fish should be kept on ice.

Bam … Kapow … Whack

As I peered through my camera lens, I saw the angle that the attack came from. A pickleball player at the net wanted to

go cross court with a smash. She went cross court and she smashed it. Unfortunately for her and her teammate, I was standing out of play as the ball crashed into me, serious injury just a moment’s notice away... ok, so I’m being a bit dramatic. They lost the point. “Yes, I was aiming for you,” said my plotting attacker. “You were targeted.” Everyone laughed as the eight players

taking up residence on the two air-conditioned pickleball courts at Bentsen Grove RV Park continued on with their games. Another 10 or so people waited their turns at what Larry Vermeersch said is the only indoor air-conditioned pickleball court in the Valley. I moved to a different spot – away from “her.” Vermeersch is president of the Bentsen Grove Pickleball Committee, a group of five people of varying pickleball skill levels that work to make sure things run smoothly and efficiently, and above all, to see that the club’s motto from Day 1 remains the most integral part of the entire pickleball experience. “It’s all about fun, fitness and fellowship,” said Vermeersch, who can be seen quite regularly at the pickleball courts, when he’s not on his patio watching his Winnipeg Jets play

(they happened to be playing the Chicago Blackhawks later on this day and, unfortunate for Larry, the Jets lost 5-2. Chicago’s win pulled them into a tie for mediocrity in the NHL’s Western Conference). Now in their third season of use, the courts have drawn in experienced pickleball players and those who have never played the sport at all. The committee has times set up so players can find skill levels that are comfortable playing in. One thing for sure, the fun, fitness and fellowship is a perfect moniker for this seemingly tightly knit group of ballers. Two years ago, I played on these courts during their inaugural year, trying my hand at pickleball for the first time. I had to find out why the craze. A combination of tennis, table tennis and badminton, the sport has raced through South Texas with a fiery popular-

There’s another indoor court in the “hangar,” but with it not being air-conditioned, it is a little lonelier than it used to be. There’s also one player who literally wears a shirt with a target attached to it. They say he’s never been hit yet. I wonder if he’s ever met “her.”

When asked “What is the emergency?” Steve told them he didn’t have one, but he had a lot of toys to donate to their toy drive and needed some help. They sent several cruisers to the store to pick up the toys. Several days later, the couple received a call – they had been invited to come to the station where they were wrapping the presents. Unbeknownst to them, the department had gotten several news outlets, print and TV, to show up and do a story on the Fisher’s generosity to the community. “The Sheriff thanked us from the bottom of his heart and said thank you for what you have done for the children in the Valley,” said Steve. The couple spent about $16,000 on toys and clothing (for both the church and Cameron County Sheriff’s department). They are so very thankful for all of the associates at the stores they visited for helping them and giving them feedback on what was most needed, and what the children might enjoy most. “Wish we could be a mouse and see the expressions on the faces of the children,”

said Steve to the sheriff. In response, the sheriff told them they were more than welcome to go with them and help deliver the presents to the families. Steve said one of the deputies came up to him later and said he must have made an impact on the sheriff as nobody has ever been able to go with them to deliver, other than the deputies, in the 24 years they have been doing the toy drive. “We like giving and it is just important to us to think that someone’s life can be impacted by what we do and not any other reason,” said Jean. “We are not in it for the glory. We just do it because we like doing it. If we can impact a child’s life, or an adult’s life, that’s what’s really important, it is not about the giving or the getting, it is letting them know that someone cares.” “This will be one of our most memorable donations – Seeing the smiling faces and hugs from the children,” said Steve about the experience. A poem Steve wrote on the experience will be on our website.

McAllen and Palm View Golf Course decided to take to the streets and see how better the city and the course could serve

the winter clientele. “It was probably the best thing we could have ever done,” Espinosa said. “We went out, we asked questions and we

listened to what they wanted. We discovered that they wanted value with quality, a nice ratio of how they wanted to spend their money. “Doing that has been a blessing.” That’s what has made Palm View one of the top courses annually in the voting for the Winter Texan Times Favorite Golf Course. Nestled just south of the expressway on Ware Road, Palm View golf course has been renovating and improving what it offers to its guests seemingly at a torrid pace. “We are investing in our product through our patrons,” said Espinosa, who is celebrating his 21st year at the municipal course. “They are not only great patrons of our course, but they are also great ambassadors of our course, sharing who we are with everyone when they go back home.” Palm View is one of the Valley’s nicest designed and maintained course, public or private, in the Rio Grande Valley. The course is set up for golfers to take as a big of a challenge as they’d like as the course will play anywhere from 4,816 yards to 6,787 yards. In terms of why we are trying to do things over the past few years, our infrastructure has aged,” Espinosa said. “The city of McAllen is aware of the need and See GOLF pg. 32

no other driving range better, or as good as what we have to offer. It’s almost the size of a football field, the tee area. We wanted to offer grass all year for our customers to hit from and we have no problem keeping grass on this. Native Plant Project meeting next week Barbara Peet and Robert Gaitan will speak at the Native Plant Project’s monthly meeting on January 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Valley Nature Center, 301 S. Border Street, in Weslaco. The public is welcome. There is no charge to attend. Barbara and Robert’s talk will explore how being members of the Rio Grande Valley Texas Master Naturalist organization reaches far beyond birds, reptiles, plants, and rocks. They claim it could save your marriage. Meet Robert and Barbara, married for 24 years. Both credit TMN for opening their eyes to the uniqueness of the RGV. Where once predefined rules of business and success defined their days, they now prefer discovering new plants growing in their yard, the morning parade of chachalacas, and the glassy days on the Laguna Madre. Robert Gaitan - Born and raised in San

Benito, Robert couldn’t wait to explore what lay beyond the RGV. Returning home, wiser and a bit older, he has spent the past several years building a deeper appreciation for our unique part of the world. Barbara Peet - Born and raised in Maryland, Barbara found herself in North Texas due to school and work. Now retired, with business and management behind her, she can slow down a little and take a closer look at the natural world. January is the Annual Membership meeting of the Native Plant Project. Refreshments will be served and those attending the meeting will have an opportunity to join the Native Plant Project. For more about the NPP, visit www. nativeplantproject.org

Mayor’s Brunch highlights Mission citrus industry

www.WinterTexanTimes.com

2019 Park Directory

2019 Rio Grande Valley Visitors Guide

The annual Mission Mayor’s International Brunch, a tradition that stretches back to the 1970s, will be another memorable one this year. The event will take place Saturday, January 25, at the Mission Event Center. “This brunch is a unique opportunity for us to celebrate our international friendships and pay homage to the citrus industry, our culture and our city’s long and distinguished history,” Mayor Dr. Armando O’Caña said. Nearly 500 leaders from throughout the Rio Grande Valley, the State of Texas and Mexico will be in attendance to foster international relations. The breakfast serves as a tribute to Mission’s rich heritage and the unique role the citrus industry plays in the city’s prosperity. This year’s keynote speaker will be U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28). Congressman Cuellar represents Texas’ 28th congressional district, which includes the cities of Mission, Laredo, Rio Grande City, and San Antonio. “It is an honor to be selected as the keynote speaker for the Mayor’s International Brunch. This long-standing tradition is a unique opportunity to celebrate the Texas Citrus Fiesta, as well as honor the rich history surrounding Mission’s citrus industry as a whole,” Congressman Cuellar said. “To be in a room filled with local leaders, elected area officials, international dignitaries, state legislators

and federal representatives, this brunch signifies the strong ties between sister cities, both along and across the United States-Mexico border. I look forward to being a part of this historic ceremony.” The 9:30 a.m. brunch will also include a special sister city signing ceremony with Fortin de las Flores, Veracruz. “Together, Mission and Fortin will encourage cultural exchanges, and stimulate economic development through our newest sister city relationship,” Mayor O’Caña said. “We look forward to this new beginning.” The brunch will kick off the Texas Citrus Fiesta events Saturday which include the Fun Fair at Leo Peña Placita Park and the famed Parade of Oranges which attracts about 100,000 people annually. The mayor said it is an honor to have so many international dignitaries and elected leaders taking part in the transnational celebration. More than a dozen delegations from Mission’s 26 sister cities will be in attendance at the brunch, some from as far away as Guatemala, Veracruz, and Jalisco. “It is a distinct occasion where we strengthen relationships with our friends across the border and at the same we highlight the citrus industry,” Mayor O’Caña said. “The citrus industry is the foundation and the heart of our All-America City.”
