Last month Palm Gardens RV and MH Park in Harlingen had the privilege to present two organizations with monies they had raised. The money was raised by auctioning off homemade pies. The organizers of the event were Joanne Perry, Phyllis Tillotson and Rich Nagle and Wray Pedro served as the auctioneer. The organizers and representatives from some local organizations were present for a special park meeting where the money raised was going to be given out. Nagle said the pie auction started five years ago when they decided to find a new way to raise money. The first year they sold eight or nine pies for about $400. “We have done much better this year,” said Nagle. “None of these auctions would be worth a plugged nickel if it wasn’t for you See DONATE pg. 6

Kansas Day celebration bigger than last year

On January 22, 359 Kansans from all over the Rio Grande Valley met to commemorate the anniversary of the state’s January 29, 1861 admission to the Union. This total attendance tops the 2019 Event by 100. What might be more spectacular, is 150 attendees were first timers for this celebration. This year’s event took place at Trophy Gardens RV Resort. Much appreciation was given to Russel and Kathy Cropp and their team for setup of all tables and chairs. A great lunch was prepared and

served by Ballis Catering of Mission. Entertainment was provided by Rusty Rierson, home grown entertainer from Augusta, KS. Those in attendance had nothing but good things to say about the food and the entertainment. Jan Bergman, chair of the event and Larry Schmitt, communications and reservations, facilitated the day’s events. Ken Naysmith served as the official photographer. The committee was also very See KANSAS pg. 40

guys,” Wray told those in attendance. Pedro presented the full amount raised this year was $2,160. He proceeded with a breakdown – that’s $60 a pie, or $7.50 a slice. “I realize you can get cheaper pie at Denny’s,” said Pedro. But it’s the cause this is going to. “I am glad that we can do this here at Palm Gardens.” Wray presented Robert Reagan with Loaves and Fishes of Harlingen and Becky Zaller with HOST at Stuart Place Elementary with checks for $1,080. Loaves and Fishes started as a soup kitchen, said Reagan. Churches found that the poverty level was so high that they could not address it by themselves. The motto of Loaves and Fishes is “Help and hope for the hungry, the homeless and the hurting.” The organization has grown to a place that offers support for the community through its several departments. They have the Bread of Life Dining Hall, Family Emergency Assistance, Great Physician Healthy Living, New Hope Job Shop, Harvest Table Food Pantry, and Open Arms Homeless Shelter. Each department does something a little different from the other to help the community’s homeless, hungry and hurting. Reagan said their main goal is to get people out of the shelters and into their own home. They even provide help to keep people from becoming homeless. With a recent grant, Loaves and Fishes now has two full time mental health professionals that help with mental counseling and addiction. Last year, they served 167,000 meals in the dining hall. They currently have 45 people in their shelter. We see a lot of people, said Reagan. At least 500 to 600 unduplicated people. This past year they also served a lot of migrants that the Border Patrol dropped off at their facilities. In just three months’ time they saw about 2,000 people. “It really challenged us, but we were so happy to help people that were in such dire straits.”

Becky Zaller with HOST talked about how she has been a part of the program since she became a teacher nearly 20 years ago. One of the volunteers at the park, Pat Bradley, has been assisting the program for 21 years. Stuart Elementary is one of the only Harlingen schools to still offer the program. The program serves 35 to 40 children that are struggling readers. The children are partnered with mentors that volunteer their time to read to the children, and help the children learn to read. The mentors usually spend about 30 minutes with the children Monday through Friday. They work one-on-one with the kids. “The best part is seeing that relationship and the connection of the child being able to communicate with someone,” said Zaller. “The mentors make a great impact on these children. With the donations they receive they can purchase books that the children can take home during their breaks such as Christmas, Spring Break and over the summer. Both Zaller and Reagan were very thankful to the park for their generosity. The park participates in a lot of fundraising, and it isn’t always money they donate. During the holidays they did a fundraiser where they collected teddy bears to give to the Harlingen Police Department. The teddy bears are used during family disturbances and such where children are in distress. The teddy bears calm the kids during what can be a transition period for them. The park mans a station during Harlingen’s Jalapeno 100 where they provided a drink and snack for runners and walkers to help them energize during the event. The park also has volunteers in the park that help others in the park with repairs, and other things in their homes. This past Christmas the park was able to support five families with Christmas gifts. They were even able to give bikes to three of the children.

Lindley Creek, always a Valley favorite

Lindley Creek has been a favorite in the Valley for a number of years now. Currently nominated for the Valley Star Awards Family Vocal Group of the Year, the group did win the 2015 RGV Bluegrass and Folk Band of the Year. Lindley Creek’s musical roots are strong, stemming from the Ozark Hills’ rich legacy of bluegrass and gospel music. They bring their unique and personal brand of acoustic music to the stage to delight all that attend their shows. The group will be presenting their Faith, Family and Freedom show with Williamson Branch on Saturday, February 8 at Casa Del Sol (400 N. Val Verde Rd., Donna). There will be a performance at 2 and 7 p.m. The event is going to be an exciting

one with both groups performing and livening up the stage and crowd. The events will feature their grand finale Kid Jam set by the kids of both family bands. It’s surely going to be an event you don’t want to miss. Lindley Creek features Kathie Greer on guitar, songwriting and vocals; husband, John Greer on bass; d a u g h t e r, Katie Greer on mandolin, songwriting and lead vocals; and son, Jase Greer, on fiddle, songwriting and harmony vocals. The family band started when Kathie and John were seeking music they could play around the house that the whole family could share and enjoy. Gospel music was already a part of their life, but one See LINDLEY CREEK pg. 45

The International Museum of Art and Science (IMAS) will be hosting Art Bash on Thursday, February 6, from 3 to 8 p.m. to continue its Family Fun Night series on the first Thursday of every month. Visitors can celebrate different forms of art at the IMAS including spirograph art, Surrealism, Mexican folk art, and music. A special performance by Musical Living Academy students will take place at 5 p.m. Guided tours in the galleries and outdoor sculpture areas will be provided throughout the evening. Recently opened exhibits include Cosmic Connections: The Metaphysical Practice of Kirk Clark and light sculptures from Jinju, South Korea. At 6 p.m. UTRGV philosophy professor Dr. Remei Capdevila Werning will present a talk entitled “The Impossible Question - What is Art?” The IMAS has partnered with UTRGV’s Department of Philosophy to present Philosophy for Everyone talks, an ongoing series of philosophy lectures at the museum for a broad audience. The IMAS is hosting special giant light sculptures on museum grounds for visitors to view during the month of February. The City of Jinju, South Korea, has loaned these sculptures to the IMAS following their special appearances in

the McAllen Holiday Parade and at the McAllen Convention Center. This collaboration bridges both communities through festivals and cultural events such as the IMAS Art Bash on February 6 and Lunar New Year Festival on February 8. International dignitaries including Mr. Jung Jae Min, Vice Mayor of Jinju toured the IMAS in early December to see firsthand the site for this art form and the treasures of the museum’s Mexican and Latin American Folk-Art Exhibit and experience a taste of South Texas arts and culture. Visit theimasonline.org or fb.com/imasmcallen for the full event program. The Art Bash is included in cost of General Admission and free for IMAS Members. WIC and EBT cardholders can visit the museum for $1 per person. The museum is located at the intersection of Bicentennial Way and Nolana Avenue at 1900 W. Nolana in McAllen. Hours of operation are Tuesday to Thursday: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Friday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. Closed Mondays. On the first Thursday of each month, IMAS is open until 8 p.m. Visit theimasonline. org or call (956) 681-2800 for more information.

Vote for your favorite golf course

The deadline to vote for your favorite golf course is drawing near. You have until 5 p.m., Wednesday, February 12 to cast your vote. Your vote can be made by using the ballot located in the Winter Texan Times paper, or online at www.wintertexantimes.com. This week, and the past two weeks, we have highlighted a favorite golf course from each area of the Valley. While you

can consider voting for these again this year, consider the hidden gems that we published in November as well to help you with your votes this year. Please review these stories and use your best judgement from your experience to place your vote on your favorite golf course in the Lower, Mid and Upper Valley.

Lecture series presents iconic companies of Texas

Join Mission Historical Museum (MHM) for sweets and light refreshments as they present their Lecture Series on February 8 at 11 a.m. You might call W.F. Strong a student of all things Texas. In 2010, he began sharing his Stories from Texas vignettes on NPR stations, most recently on the Texas Standard’s network of 30 stations. Celebrating his home state, Strong has collected 75 of his broadcasts. You’ll hear his inimitably Texan voice in your mind’s ear as he weaves stories on subjects ranging from how to talk Texan to Texas bards and troubadours; from tall Texas tales to Lone Star icons like Charles Goodnight, Tom Landry and Blue Bell ice cream; from

legends and heroes of the past to some heartfelt memories of his own. W.F. Strong is a Professor of Communication and Culture and a Fulbright Scholar at The University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley. He also writes, occasionally, for Texas Highways Magazine. MHM is located at 900 Doherty Avenue and are open Tuesday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturdays, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. For more information on this program or any upcoming events contact the museum office at (956) 580-8646, visit us at www.missionmuseum.org, or follow us on Facebook.

ACDG performing in the Valley this month

Golf Favorites: Third Stop – River Bend Golf Course

How long can a secret remain a secret, especially when more and more people discover that secret? River Bend Golf Course and Country Club was once the best kept secret golf course in the Rio Grande a Valley. Since then, however, ownership has not only marketed the course to Winter Texans inside and out of the country club, but they’ve also added a touch to make the challenging, but fun course, a more memorable event. In the past two year, the course has removed trees and cleaned out the holes that run along the Rio Grande, providing golfers with a view that is enough to bring them back to the course. “It’s a much prettier picture now,” said assistant golf pro Adrian Garcia. “We pulled a lot of trees and mowed all the

stuff down along those holes 5, 6, 10, 11, 12 and 13. It’s a very nice visual on a very challenging golf course.” Ted Trap, the developer of Rancho

Viejo, originally owned River Bend and his idea was to link Rancho to a raw water source from the Rio Grande, thus the beginning of the development in 1983. River Bend opened as a nine-hole course in 1983 and quickly expanded to 18 holes just two years later, in 1985. Thirty years later, in 2015, the Barnard family, owners of Coastal Realty

and long-time Brownsville residents, bought River Bend and the new strategic marketing plan was put in place. That strategy included improvements for residents and letting golfers know that River Bend golf course was no longer a secret place. “The Winter Texans are very important to our course, both our wonderful residents and those from other parks,” Garcia said. “We have several groups that come play weekly, both men and ladies, and some days we will have 25-35 in a group.” The course has also made a couple

holes a tad bit less challenging (never does a hole become easier) by moving a set of par-3 to cut the distance to the green. No. 2 went from 205 yards to 150 while No. 13 went from about 210 to 140. While that is definitely a plus, the South Texas wind will certainly find a way to make up for it. “Number 5 is one of my favorite holes to walk up to and play,” Garcia said. “And now you can see the whole river. The course is in great shape, the view is magnificent and it’s just a great place to come out, enjoy a round of golf and the scenery. It’s just a pretty picture out here.”

The Rio Grande Valley Farm Equipment Club will be holding their annual scholarship fundraiser this weekend, Saturday February 8, and Sunday February 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the RGV Livestock Showgrounds in Mercedes. Admission is $5. There will be food and fun for those that attend. All proceeds will benefit the club’s scholarship program. The club awards scholarships to high school students that plan to study agriculture or a related field. The club receives applications every year from Valley high school agriculture and Future Farmers of America department. The club includes current and/or retired farmers and individuals interested in the preservation of farm life. Some of our members are Winter Texans who are members of similar clubs back home. The club participates in public events, such as the RGV Livestock Show in Mercedes, the La Feria Festival and other related events. Club members display their antique tractors, equipment and other items related to old farm life. The club was created by local farmers in 1989 to help preserve older farming equipment and to tell the stories of how farming used to be. The goal of the club is to keep old farm life memories alive for present and future generations to come. With their demonstrations and activities, the club lets the younger generation, and older people too, experience how life was for their parents and grandparents. The club provides demonstrations on rope making, blacksmithing, corn grinding, broom making, and how to make

sauerkraut the old-fashioned way. They also provide hayrides and other activities like a duck race game using old fashioned pumps. The activities are done in hopes of keep old traditions alive and in the thoughts of those who visit. The club enjoys sharing these farming traditions by teaching and exploring them with the younger generations. It is also a walk through memory lane for those that grew up during those times. The club participates in the RGV Livestock Show in Mercedes that is held in March. They also participate in the La Feria Festival held in February. The group has several Winter Texan members that help during their stay in the Valley. Some of the members are also members of similar clubs back home. Irene Zuniga, a board member of the farming club, said the Winter Texans that come by their barn at the Livestock Show spend a lot of time talking to club members about their own farm life experience. “Of course, they love to compare their tractors with the ones we have on display.” The club meets from November through March every second Saturday of the month at 10 a.m. at the Livestock Showgrounds. Membership fees are $20 a year. They welcome anyone who would like to come and visit or might be interesting in joining the club. SHE KEPT US SAFE

Fred Renk – a legend coming to an end

Rio Grande Valley citizens rarely make the headlines in the Washington Post - unless, of course, they are locally elected politicians and hold a high office in Washington D.C. Well, that can’t be said of Fred Renk who is well known for operating Bloodless Bull Fights for at least twenty years. At 83 years of age Fred has decided to sell his Bull Ring located in La Gloria, Texas. On Sunday, February 16, Fred will present his last bull fight. Two bull fighters - one a woman - will perform before what will probably be a full house. Each fighter will draw for the two bulls that they will fight. The bull fight will begin at 4 p.m. and will not end until around 6 p.m. Prior to the beginning of the fight, food and drink will be available for purchase. Fred makes sure that you are well entertained with music and trained horsemanship performances before the actual bullfight begins. So, arrive early to enjoy all the entertainment. Mr. Renk is presenting only two fights this season. The first was presented on January 12, the second and last will be the one presented on February 16. Those who attended the January fight, reported that it was very interesting, entertaining and that they were glad they went. The big difference in a Bloodless Bullfight and the Bullfights held in Mexico and in Spain is that the bull is not killed in the Bloodless Bullfight. Since 1950, it has been illegal in the United States to kill the bull. As a finale to each fight, and after the judge has given the matador permission to “kill”’ the bull, the bull fighter must reach in over the lethal horns of the bull and remove a paper flower that was placed in the same position where the sword would have entered. There are other movements that are similar in the bloodless version to those where the bull is actually killed. Anyone attending either type of bull fight will appreciate the skill of the fighter more if they understand why certain moves and passes are executed. There-

fore, I encourage those who plan to attend to go on a group narrated tour where the guide will share with you the meaning of what you will be observing. For Fred Renk, bull fighting is in his blood. He was a bull fighter himself, and the father of David Renk, who was the sixth American to reach matador status. David, who was affectionately called “EI Texano,” became the only American to ever receive the prestigious status of a confirmed matador. David earned that honor fighting in the Mexico City bull ring - the largest bull ring in the world. He earned that recognition when he was only 18 years of age. As the bullfighter walks into the ring, surrounded by his cuadrilla, or helpers, no doubt many a young lady’s heart will flutter. The matador wears a splendidly decorated, tight fitting suit while the band plays an exciting, exhilarating tune for the crowd. Some young lady - perhaps a sweetheart or a wife or maybe just a beautiful senorita - will be especially recognized by the handsome matador as he dedicates the fight to her, or perhaps he will dedicate the fight to the whole crowd. Who knows? I guess we will just have to watch to find out. A little romance is just a small part of the fight which can become very dangerous. Both of Fred’s sons lost their lives due to accidents in the bull ring. Fred almost died after he was gored in a fight in Juarez, Mexico. Even so, Fred will tell you that bull fighting has been his entire life. Hopefully, for bull fighting fans, there will be someone who will buy the bull ring and continue offering bloodless bullfights. Currently, there is only one other permanent operation in the U.S where one can see bullfighting and that one is in California. No wonder Fred Renk made the Washington Post. For Texas - and for almost all of the United States - Fred Renk is a one and only.

The great, great grandson of Henry Clay Davis, a famous Texas Ranger, will present about his ancestor during the Sunday Speaker Series program, “The Legendary Henry Clay Davis in Early Texas,” at the Museum of South Texas History February 9 at 2 p.m. L. Michael “Mike” Davis is the great, great grandson of Henry Clay Davis. He created a booklet with the goal of telling his ancestor’s story to his family, and other history enthusiasts. Using Dick D. Heller Jr.’s manuscript, “The Story of Henry Clay Davis,” Mike Davis will discuss the life of the former Texas ranger, frontier fighter, enterprising merchant, state senator, brigadier general and founder of Davis Landing, a docking station for steamboats on the Rio Grande. In addition to the landing, Henry Clay Davis established barracks called Camp Ringgold, later named Fort Ringgold, in 1848. Old Guys Rule

Bob Repp took his glasses off and made his way toward the tennis court. “Hey,” yelled out Jerry Butcher. “You forgot your glasses.” “What,” the 92-year-old Repp responded. “I don’t need those things.” Repp, Butcher and Bob Tenyak are the three elders in a group of tennis players that meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday to play tennis for 90 minutes. They’ve been doing that at Aladdin Villas for at least 20 years and in a recent email that provided a photo of the group, the subject was: Old Guys Rule. “I have a hard time sometimes keeping up with them,” said Butcher, the baby in the group who just turned 84. Meanwhile the more “experienced” Tenyak is 87 and Repp is 92. “We play 70-year-old and sometimes 60-year-olds and we definitely keep up with them, if not trounce them occasionally.” Those are the words of a preacher man, so you can take them to heart. Butcher actually started playing tennis with a group of pastors in Ohio. They would play at 7 a.m. every Wednesday “to get our frustrations out – it’s much better to hit a tennis ball than the congregation,” Butcher joked. Aladdin Villas, Butcher said, has a strong history and tradition of playing tennis. Butcher said that the numbers have dropped and pointed to the popularity and meteoric rise of pickleball as one of the reasons. “Well, tennis players can play pickleball,” Butcher said. “But pickleball players can’t necessarily play tennis. I don’t play pickleball though. I like the exercise

from tennis.” Butcher said that there are six to eight netters who come out pretty much religiously for camaraderie, competition and, mainly, exercise, adding that the group have all had their health issues but have been able to bounce back and keep their hardcourt time going. “Sometimes when we have six or seven players, we’ll rotate players,” Butcher said. “Sometimes we like that little bit of rest period. If someone would have asked me to go jump up and down in the street for an hour and a half, I would say no way but if you put a tennis racket in my hand and suddenly it’s a different story.” Butcher had nothing but praise for his other two “Old Guys Rule” friends. “They really keep up with the young people very well,” Butcher said. “Bob really gets the ball back and he’s been around awhile. When you’re an old tennis player you have to play smart – if you can’t be that good, you gotta be that smart to take care of those younger players. Another trick that Butcher has up his sleeve – well both sleeves actually – is that he’s an ambidextrous player. “Well I serve only with my right hand,” he said. “But I can return the ball with either hand. I fell once a few years back trying to take that ‘third step’ to reach a ball. At our age we shouldn’t be taking that ‘third step’ so being able to return the ball with either hand saves me a step.” They’re good. They’re smart. That’s why the “Old Guys Rule.”

WINTER TEXAN TIMES RAMBLINGS From pg. 1

I told you last week we had been busy this January and our month wasn’t over yet. I tried to get everything in last week that we had done, but I tend to ramble and it got lengthy, so I wanted to talk about a few more things we did before we get our February rolling – which we already plan to attend six events in the next couple of weeks, including the Bull fight, Mission Mega Winter Texan Fiesta, the Valley Star Awards, and Glenn Miller Orchestra. Who knows what else will come up during the month though? On Saturday, January 25, we went to the Texas Citrus Fiesta where there were three parks that had entered floats or golf

1- 8 0 0 - 5 6 7- 3 3 11 carts into the parade. We spent a few hours watching the parade and making sure we got pictures of the parks that participated. Their pictures and information were printed in last week’s edition of our paper. Later that evening we went to the National Professional Bull Riders competition at the Mercedes Livestock Showgrounds. We took our kids too and had a blast. The crowd was full of Winter Texans. We enjoyed some tunes from Chris Marshall before the bull riding took place. Leslie Blasing was playing at the Commemorative Air Force RGV Wing on Monday, January 27, for a fundraiser and, even though it was press day, we went ahead and made a trip out there.

They are located at the Port Isabel-Cameron County Airport in Los Fresnos. It can be a drive, but well worth the visit, and not only because we got to hear some 40’s music from Leslie. They have several planes out at the airport that the whole family enjoyed looking at. My son really liked the military jeeps that were there. Leslie was performing in the back end of an old Ford pickup that suited the time period. There was a couple, in which the man was 90, that had so much energy. He and his partner danced to nearly every song. Before the close of the event, two trumpet players, Jim Duffey and Nacho Garcia, played the echoing TAPS. It was soulful and resonated in the hangar the event was held in. If you haven’t been out there, drop by and pay the guys a visit. They are working their best to preserve memories and memorabilia from WWII. The pilots and volunteers work on keeping the machines – vehicles and planes – in working order. They have a small area right now with pieces that have been donated, mostly by locals, but plan to expand to fit items that are currently in storage. You can find out more about the CAF RGV Wing at their website, https://rgvcaf. org/. Last week we also went

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

out to Winter Fest at Beach Park. We had a great time listening to some music by Jeff Gordon and Hector Guzman. Pickpocket Gene put on quite a show too with his prowess at taking watches and jewelry off unsuspecting participants. Before getting out to Winter Fest, we stopped by the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park for their groundbreaking of what will eventually be a 428-mile trail network connecting the lower Rio Grande Valley. Their plans are massive, but they intend on bringing the community together to create healthier lifestyles and trails that will be open to all. The trails will consist of multiuse trails, including bicycle routes and paddling trails. The trails will go through several of the birding sites in the lower RGV including the cities and towns of Brownsville, Harlingen, Combes, Los Fresnos, Los Indios, Port Isabel, Rio Hondo, San Benito, Laguna Vis-

ta, Rancho Viejo and South Padre Island. Eva Garcia, project manager, said there are opportunities for Winter Texans to get involved in these projects. If not only to use them, but also to offer some feedback. These resources are meant to be shared she said. Palo Alto Battlefield is a free park to visit, has trails of their own as well as

some history. Garcia said she hopes the Winter Texans, and other residents, will offer advice and input on things they want to see or areas they can improve. She said, since Winter Texans are from other areas, they can offer so much to the project by giving input on what you enjoy at other locations throughout your travels, or your other home. “We’re still learning,” said Garcia. We are open to any ideas for this network as it grows. It was a beautiful day out there and we had a chance to see some of the artifacts at the annex building and talk to two Winter Texan volunteers. Daryl Sullivan, who stays at Victoria Palms while wintering in the Valley, is from Iowa. He was manning the building and gift shop area. William “Bill” Boyle, a Winter Texan from Indiana, was a surprise visitor according to Daryl. Bill usually volunteers on Fridays, but he was going to be visiting with some elementary students later in the day to give them a history lesson on the Mexican-American War and the Battle of Palo Alto. We enjoy visiting with you and learning why you come here and what you like about the Winter Texan Times. We have had so much fun getting out there and enjoying things right alongside with y’all. We look forward to continuing this trend until the end of the season – and I am already looking forward to events we can attend next season. Y’all are keeping us on our toes, that’s for sure. Thank you for letting us have some fun with y’all.

With The Quilt Show around the corner let us help you get ready.

Celebrate Lunar New Year at IMAS

The International Museum of Art and Science (IMAS) will be hosting its eighth annual Lunar New Year Festival on Saturday, February 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Celebrate the Year of the Mouse (Rat) alongside RGV’s vibrant Asian community. Visitors of all ages are welcome to explore China, Korea, and Taiwan with traditional calligraphy, art, games, story times by McAllen Public Library children librarians, and more. Entertainment includes a hip-hop dance by X Studio, a piano performance by Dr. Jooyoung Kim from UTRGV, and a martial art performance by students from Bob Davis Martial Arts school. A food sampling from local restaurants will take place (while supplies lasts), plus boba tea will be for sale by the Filipino Student Association from UTRGV. Each year, the IMAS hosts the Lunar New Year Festival which celebrates the rich traditions of Asian cultures. While the Gregorian calendar that is used in the United States is based on the solar year, the calendar used in most Asian countries, including China, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, and Tibet, is based on the phases of the moon. Lunar New Year festivals began on January 25, with the first new moon of the lunar calendar, and will end on the first full moon fifteen days later. The yearly festival celebrates the coming of spring, and each year is represented by

an animal from the Chinese zodiac. This year, the calendar started at the beginning making 2020 the Year of the Rat. Experience the customs unique to China, Korea and Taiwan with activities and performances based on these countries’ common traditions. In the Taiwan r o o m , make a lantern and learn a b o u t Taiwanese rituals with a Q&A at 2:30 p.m. In China, learn all about the Chinese zodiac, make a mouse bookmark, and see the art of Chinese calligraphy. Play traditional games, experience Korean calligraphy, color a folk-art mask, and try on a hanbok in the Korea room. For the full event program, visit theimasonline.org or fb.com/imasmcallen. The Lunar New Year Festival is included in cost of General Admission and free for IMAS Members.

I chose the latter. museums, SeaLife Center, and of Happy Hour 1 PM to 7 PM course the Historic Lighthouse. It took Camilla less than a minute to decide, picking out the three-cheese grilled cheese sandwich. We Like us on Tel: 956-943-3663 ordered some guacamole and chips to start and the taste www.pirateslandingrestaurant.com facebook bud pleasantries soon began. www.spifrequentdiners.com The guacamole was fresh and plentiful. There was no reason to ration how much you wanted on each chip — there was going to be some left for sure. Camilla’s sandwich was thick with melted cheeses in between two toasted slices of dark wheat bread. Just the contrast in colors made it look delectable, sitting next to a pile of hot, crispy fries. This was no kids’ menu grilled cheese sandwich; this was royalty. I enjoyed the other half of the sandwich later that night and it was still great — there’s just something about cheese that makes things great, so three cheeses were mind blowing. My fish was as good as I imagined. A little heavier than salmon, it was cooked to perfection, flaky but holding firm, the dill sauce not smothering it but just bringing out the flavor. The sauce also went amazingly well with a fork full of white rice. The dish also came with some fresh vegetables. When we left, we both agreed that this was a fantastic lunch, and I promised myself that I would be back soon. This time I mean it; it’s too good not to go.

The love grew from hearing bluegrass music played in a Sunday School sit around, to making the decision to buy one instrument at a time – teach the kids, learn to play and sing. They found what they loved and made it into something of their own. Fifteen years later, and without one member that went to college and now has his own family, Lindley Creek is enjoying their time developing their own bluegrass sound and entertaining people from Missouri, the Ozarks, to the Rio Grande Valley.
