Renk’s final event on February 16 will honor his son Matador David Renk, “El Texano,” a true icon of Matadorship in the bullfight world. David passed away September 2018. He was the sixth American Matador in history since 1902 to achieve the title, and the only one of the group to ever appear in the world’s largest bullring and receive the doctorate of bullfighting. Renk started to put on bloodless events in 1986, by leasing the Houston Astrodome, where the first of a series of world class bullfights started. By Arleen Bier Tommie Brixey, owner of LaFloresta Park in Mercedes, reported that the first annual La Floresta Derby was held the first Saturday in February at La Floresta Downs. It drew quite a crowd as Winter Texans arrived in large, extravagant hats; had Mint Julep jello shots; and cheered as the horses “raced by. Excitement mounted during the weeks preceding the race, as teams were created to decorate the horses and choose a jockey. The six horses, among the best of the best, were all first-time participants at La Floresta Downs. The jockeys were Winter Texans who came from all over the United States and Canada to participate in this prestigious race in the Rio Grande Valley. The horses were Star of Mercedes, Jockey Kent McVeigh of Ontario, Canada; Angel Eagle, Jockey Ginger Seurkamp of Whitney, TX; Floral Flurry, Jockey Gary Smith of Columbus, KS; Crown Royal, Jockey Hans Mohr of Manitoba, Canada; Dragon Lady, Jockey Wayne Summerly of Manitoba, Canada; and Come From Away, Jockey Monkey Bum Cheeks (Vicki Thurman) of Bonne Terre, Missouri. It was the most exciting 45 minutes of

sports racing at La Floresta Downs. Come From Away was the first horse out of the gate, and we had a photo finish as the winner, Crown Royal, won by a nose! Come From Away came in second place; and Star of Mercedes came in third. Dragon Lady won best decorated horse. Some people were there just to see the hats. A competition was held, and much thought and hard work went into designing masterpieces for this special event. The judges were Betty Fuller of St. Charles, MO; Arlene Willis of Des Moines, IA; and Tommie Brixey of Mercedes. Karlene Weiland of Texas and Harry Seurkamp of Whitney, TX won the prize for the best and most creative hats. T h e Derby was organized under the direction of Marlys St. Martin of St. Paul, MN, Bill Hocken of Ontario, Canada; and Harry Seurkamp of Whitney. The team created an unforgettable event that celebrated the tradition of horse racing.

As always, Emcee and show producer is none other than popular cowboy poet, Rich Bellert. This is Bellert’s 18th out of 19 years producing the Winter Texan Fiesta for the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce. Be sure to bring your lawn chairs for comfortable seating during the free outdoor concert. Rich Bellert Rich Bellert has produced the Winter Texan Fiesta for more than fifteen years sponsored by the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce. It has grown over the years from five to six hundred people in the audience, to over two thousand. Bellert features only live musicians, playing with no mechanical back-up, as he is dedicated to promoting live music festivals. There is always a variety of classic country, blue grass, rock and roll, new country, often oldies from the 60’s, Texas Swing, Mariachi, Folklorico, and laced with some gospel as well. Bellert attributes the success of The Winter Texan Fiesta to the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce in generously providing both a free lunch and live music, with a variety of vendors showcasing their various services to the Winter Texans throughout the Valley. It is a way for the City of Mission and the Chamber of Commerce; to express their appreciation and say “Thank You” to all the Winter Texans for choosing Mission, and the Greater Rio Grande Valley for the winter months.

pg. 1 Bellert’s unique way of emceeing, laced with cowboy poetry and comedy, is well known throughout the country. He has appeared at the National Traditional Country Music Festival for many years at Missouri Valley and Le Mars, IA which moved to Fremont, NE in 2019. Bellert is also a member of the Traditional Country Music Hall of Fame and is an award winning member of the National Cowboy Poetry Rodeo Association. Chari Heldenbrand and High Country Chari Heldenbrand, formerly from Michigan, now makes her home with her husband, Louie, in Iowa. Her early years growing up in Michigan and becoming involved with entertaining and music, not only in personal experiences, but on radio and television, are life experiences she will never forget. At age four she was singing in church with her sister at special events. She was a member of the high school band, began playing the piano, and at age 14 received her first

guitar. Soon after, she began playing at a local restaurant in her hometown and appearing throughout Mid-Michigan with the Miles Family Band at churches and community events. As a member of the Mid-Michigan Bluegrass Association she performed with the “Back Porch Pickers” throughout the state. Chari also appeared on weekly television show “Heaven is my Home” and a short movie “Where Do We Go from Here” broadcast both in Michigan and Adamsville, TN. A local radio station personality, Mark Ray, broadcasting on WGLM-FM sponsored a talent show featuring original songs. Her song “Memories” charted number three and “Angel in Black” number six. She also sang “Play Me the Waltz of the Angels” recorded with Doug Wise and was selected to appear in a special concert featuring the top ten winners of the year. Chari

recorded an album in Nashville featuring her original songs. Her song “Memories” relating her love for her grandfather rose to number four on the independent international world charts, which included her tribute song to veterans “I Saw an Eagle Fly Today”. Heldenbrand is a member of the National Traditional Country Music Association “Hall of Fame” and performs at National Music Festivals throughout the country. She is featured at the Wahoo Music Festival in Nebraska sponsored by Sharon and Roger Kenaston as well as The Macon County Music Blue Grass Festival in Macon, MO and at the annual National Traditional Country Musical Association Festival. Chari, playing the rhythm guitar and singing her favorite songs, will be backed by the High Country Band featuring Barry and Linda Burton who have played for other country stars such as Justin Tubb, Jimmy Dean, Marvin Rainwater and others. Bar-

r y will be playing the steel guitar, Linda on bass; and Horace Comfort will be playing lead guitar. Comfort has played lead for Roy Drusky, Cal Smith, Justin Triveno, Kevin Black, and is a member of the Gatesville, TX Hall of Fame, and producer of the Lone Star Country Jamboree in Seguin, TX. Dale and Gayle Dale and Gayle Eisenhauer, who are simply known as Dale and Gayle, are retired schoolteachers from Newkirk, OK which is in northern Oklahoma. They are in their 10th year as entertainers having appeared in 38 states and have performed in nearly 1,500 shows. Dale has played guitar and sung in country dance bands since 1970 throughout Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas. He has played back-up and appeared with many country legends such as Hank Thompson, Kitty Wells, Helen Cornelius, Barbara Fairchild, Cal Smith, David Frizzell, Narvel Felts, Wanda Jackson, Michael Martin Murphy, Jimmy Fortune and many others.

“Each of these wonderful legends was a special moment for me as I looked up and saw “me” on the stage playing music with them. I never dreamed I would be so fortunate. It was a dream come true to sing and play with some of my all-time country music heroes,” Dale recalls. His biggest thrill was to appear with his daughter Kathy, at the Ryman Theater in Nashville; stand in the circle on the stage and perform several songs at a special event at the Ryman. For four years Dale had a fourteen-piece band, including himself, and put on a “Grand ‘Ole Opry” style show in Ponca City, OK with the quality of a Branson Music Show. A number of fans preferred the local show, making it not necessary to travel to Branson for quality Country Music Entertainment. Today Dale and Gayle work in the Rio Grande Valley during the winter months and play in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and New Mexico entertaining tourists and vacationers. Gayle is a trained pianist, beginning with lessons in her childhood, and she never dreamed someday she would be a full-time entertainer, traveling the country with her husband. Gayle plays a split keyboard and is the bass player with her left hand and plays piano with her right hand while she also sings. Dale and Gayle never play or sing to tracks for background backup, their music is always live. Rusty Rierson Rusty Rierson, a native of Kansas, is appearing on the entertainment circuit in the Rio Grande Valley for the second year. His popularity as an entertainer is growing by leaps and bounds as he works the Valley’s Winter Texan Parks and subdivisions. With nearly 25 years of experience under his belt, including the Shotgun Gun Red Variety Show on RFD-TV, Rusty also hosts his own show called “Rusty Radio” sponsored by Mid-America Ag Network out of Wichita, KS airing each week on several stations in Kansas and Oklahoma. Other TV credits include the “Phil Mac International Country Show,” Sky TV in Europe and also appeared briefly on a season of American Idol. Rierson has worked and appeared with country legends such as David Frizzell, T. G. Sheppard, Leroy Van Dyke, Sawyer Brown, Collin Raye, Joe Diffie, Johnnie Western, Jimmy Fortune, Susy Boggus, Moe Bandy, and including newcomers Dustin Lynch, Craig Campbell and many others. Rusty started recording in 2006. He has nine different projects, including See FIESTA pg. 8

From Arena in San Antonio, then to Ft. Worth, then to the coliseum in El Paso. Twenty years ago Fred built the plaza Santa Maria in La Gloria, and started world class events that, to this day, have entertained the Winter Texan tourists these last 20 years. “I built the plaza for David to have a connection with all the matadors and the bullfight world and continue in later years when for sure I would not be around, but this loss of son, David has forced me to retire. There is a chance that because of the interest, a few bullfight ranch owners will take it up and continue these events next year. It has gained an interest, and fame, and is inspiring to watch,” said Fred Renk Last week the Wall Street Journal did a big story on Fred Renk and the Santa Maria Bullring, that came out all over the world, it created an interest from bullfight entrepreneurs in Spain and Mexico. The article carried photos of Karla Santoyo and Cayetano Delgado so there’s a great chance that Fred will be able to continue as a spectator in the future - God Willing. The bulls are from the ranch of El Sabinal, a ranch that Fred Renk helped to get started and are a pure Spanish blooded animal. These bulls go to the Professional Bullriding Rodeo after one fight - you

pg. 1 can only fight them once - where they will chase the clowns the rest of their life. Karla Santoyo heads the card on February 16, and will be performing with Cayetano Delgado. Both have performed at the Santa Maria Bullring over the years. Karla, whose bullfight club is recognized by the American International Association of Bullfight Clubs of America, has a special meaning to Fred Renk because he formed it and has represented the club throughout the United States and Mexico and Europe. Cayateno Delgado recently returned from Spain and won the Golden Bull trophy here last year. He is a classic matador who performs with sterling statuesque passes that literally make you tremble while watching his performance. Truly inspiring. Before the show, there will be food, beverages and music. There will also be a horse performance by Mario Ordaz and his fantastic horse Guapo. Alexa Posas will entertain with her classic voice and sing mariachi favorites. Gates open at 1 p.m. Show begins at 4 p.m. Make reservations by calling (956) 481-3300 and pay when you arrive. Come and watch the Hair Fly. The event was started by Winter Texans in 2009 at Texas Trails RV Park. The first seven years the event was staffed by seniors. Doctor’s Hospital joined the event in 2016 and now the event is staffed by senior volunteers and volunteers from the hospital. Texas Trails has a team of six that will be showing up to do the shaving and a group will also manage the silent auction. Winter Texan volunteers also handle the raffle, distribute buttons and wrist bands, take pictures and so much more at the event.

2020 will be the twelfth year of participation for the Rio Grande Valley and over $300,000 was raised in previous Valley events. Vannie E. Cook Jr. Clinic in McAllen has received over $462,000 in grants from St. Baldrick’s Foundation. St. Baldrick’s Foundation began in 2000 as a casual conversation between friends and has exploded into the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising program for childhood cancer research. Over $39 Million was raised in 2019 bringing the total given in grants since 2005 to over $270 million. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation makes more grants for childhood cancer research than any organization except the U.S. government. At last year’s head shaving event 51 heads were shaved and $25,000 was raised for research into cures and better treatments for Childhood Cancer.

Tip O Texas Fundraiser Feb. 21

Tip O Texas sewing group will have their Wedding Gowns of the Decades Style Show and Luncheon next week on Friday, February 21 from 12 to 3 p.m. The event is $8 per person and must be purchased in advance. Monies raised go to their Sewing Room Charities group. Tip O Texas has a large endeavor with their sewing room charities organization. On Thursday’s the group has a charity sew where they make blankets for children in different places. On the second Thursday of every month, they make comforters for Ronald McDonald patients at Edinburg Children’s Hospital. Marcia Albers from Iowa and Jackie Hood from MI are in charge of that group. On the Third Thursday of the month, they do piece quilting for Veterans in the Valley. They make 54”x72” quilts to give to the VA nursing home on Yuma. For the

past 10 years, they have taken quilts to Killeen for wounded soldiers. Betty Fiser from Ohio is in charge of this endeavor. Celeste Layman donated a mid-arm and fabrics are donated. The group buys batting and backings. Fiser said taking the quilts to Killeen was very satisfying, but the seven-hour drive was getting a bit much for their aging members. On the fourth and fifth Thursdays, the group makes lap size comforters for nursing homes. Mary Kitkowski from WI is in charge of the project. Double knits are always needed for the project. These are just some of the areas the donations will be used for. If interested, call Betty Fiser at (419) 230-0229 for tickets and more information.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

2019 Valley Star Award winners in the Valley again Dave and Daphne are not new to the Rio Grande Valley scene. They have won Valley Star Awards Duet Musical Group of the Year the past two years and are here again to entertain the Winter Texan audiences. Dave Slayer is just a regular guitar playing man with a God-given talent to touch people with his music. He is proclaimed to be one of the most fabulous guitarists on the planet by Barbara Mandrell. His guitar is explosive. Slayer has toured the world with Barbara Mandrell, performed for presidents at the White House and appeared on countless TV shows. Dave credits his uncles who were Bluegrass legends and Grand Ole Opry members for his love of music and his musical ability and talents. When not touring with Daphne, Dave performs with his uncle Jesse at the Grand Ole Opry. Aside for his guitar playing talent, Dave is also an accomplished vocalist, songwriter and humorist. Daphne Anderson is a talented female vocalist that was born in Georgia. While in college she performed in pageants, talent contests, and churches. She has performed with some of the greatest southern gospel music groups of all time including The Bill Gaither Group, the Florida Boys,

and The Cathedrals. She has been voted the Female Vocalist of the Year by the Southern Gospel Music Association. It was during that time she made the decision to move to Nashville to pursue a career in music. Best described as a cross between Shania Twain and Patsy Cline, the crowds are in love with Daphne’s voice. She is quick witted and super talented. She performs impressions of country music legends such as Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, and Patsy Cline. She also has a talent for yodeling and of course, gospel music. Together, these two liven up crowds and bring them to the edge of their seats, if not standing and singing along. Dave and Daphne start performing in the Valley with their first show on February 15 at Fiesta Village Resort in Mission. They have a full calendar through February 29. February 16, Pharr South Resort; February 17, Aladdin Villas; February 18, The Beach Resort at South Padre Island; February 19, Valley Star Awards; February 19, Winter Haven; February 20, John Knox Village; February 21, Seven Oaks; February 22, Mission West; February 23, El Valle Del Sol; February 25, Beach Resort at South Padre Island; February 28, Eastgate; and February 29, Canyon Lake RV Resort.

Children’s Haven International needs you

Knowing more about the Children’s Haven International located near Reynosa has always been my desire. For years I had heard about the Haven, but I really did not know much about it. Many residents of local RV and Motor Home Parks regularly cross the border to volunteer their time and talent to Haven. Some park residents even sponsor a needy child to help them on their way. Sponsoring a child means you commit to donating $25 per month. I was especially impressed with how the sponsorship dollars are actually put into a pool that doesn’t just help the one child you picked but will help all the children. Obviously, some children are more appealing than others; some are cute and lovable and apt to be chosen quickly by a sponsor. Others are not so cute and lovable but are shy and withdrawn. But all of them need our love and support. Recently I was blessed to meet the director at a local park expo. Just in the brief time that I visited with director Betsy Chacon my desire to know even more increased. Now I just need to make time in my busy schedule to join one of their tours scheduled from October to April. Anyone who would like to know more about the work Betsy does and would like to visit the facility should call the Pharr office. Their number is (956) 787-7378. For groups of eight or more, Children’s Haven International will arrange a pickup in your park on a date of your choosing. Regular Wednesday lunch tours can be arranged as needed for individuals who would like to visit the facilities. The cost of lunch is $15 per person or $25 per couple. You will be served a regular Mexican lunch giving you time to have lunch with the children, visit the Elementary School classrooms and tour the 14-acre facility. The facility itself is very close to the US border. If you cross into Mexico on the Anzalduas Bridge off of Bryan Rd. in Mission, you will be less than ten minutes from the campus. This way you can avoid the downtown traffic of Reynosa.

Remember, the Haven will arrange the visits as needed and you don’t even have to drive. Children’s Haven International can accommodate eighty children. Currently they have fifty Mexican children finding refuge at the Haven. These children range in age from infants to young teens and come from broken, abusive or impoverished homes. Over 150 children attend school at the Haven. On your visit you will be able to witness firsthand the humanitarian work that is accomplished at Children’s Haven International. Children’s Haven International was founded 47 years ago. The Haven exists because of volunteers who give of their time and their money to support this Christian endeavor. Betsy and her husband are the only paid employees. Support comes not only from volunteers who give of their time and their money, but also from proceeds garnered from sales at their Thrift Store located at 400 E. Minnesota Rd. in Pharr. You will find great bargains there on everything from household items to clothes and furniture. They are always looking for donations and more volunteers, especially in the summer. You can drop off your items to donate, or if they are large items, they can arrange to pick those up. The hours at the Thrift Store are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The Haven needs your continued help. If you would like to participate in the Spring Festival scheduled for March 21, give the office a call. There will be many carnival type booths and they need volunteers to help man those booths. Booth sponsorships are available at $20 per person or $35 per couple. All proceeds will go to support the elementary school. Of course, the most fun will actually be working in a booth and having a hot dog with the kids. Call the Haven office at (956) 787-7378 to volunteer, wear your tennis shoes and join the fun.

Maggie Mae and Dan Smith, entertaining duo

Maggie Mae and Dan Smith are an entertaining duo performing in the Valley this year. They share each other’s talents with each other and with the parks they visit. They will be performing at several parks this month as well as the Valley Star Awards on February 19. Maggie Mae is a home-grown talented country singer/Nashville recording artist from Oxford, Wisconsin. She has been entertaining crowds with her country music and yodeling. Maggie’s instant rapport with the audience and her enthusiasm

throughout her shows give enjoyment to country music fans and also anyone else who just loves good music. Maggie started her singing career later in life when she owned and operated her little café Maggie Mae’s Café in Oxford from 2001-2014. She always listened to country radio while working, singing along quietly when she was encouraged by her husband to try to sing. It was in 2002 when she decided to buy a guitar and learn to play and sing. Her popularity then grew by her singing at her café, and then as time went on, her musical career grew rapidly, and she has been entertaining crowds ever since. She sold her café in 2014 and bought a campground, Blue Lake. She continues to keep busy singing with her talented band, Heartland Country, at theaters, festivals, fairs and at her very own Barn Theater on her farm in Oxford. Her barn is where guests can enjoy a great buffet meal, music by the band and dancing. Her theater closes in October to allow her to travel to Texas and Arizona during the winter months before opening back up in the Spring. She and her band have opened for the Oak Ridge Boys, she has performed sev-

eral times with the great lady of country, Leona Williams, and award-winning polka musician Mollie B., as well as opened for festival shows for many other artists. To date she has recorded seven albums and two DVDs of her performances with plenty of toe-tapping and yodeling songs that will make you smile. In 2011, Maggie’s album “Cooking Up Country” won the Rural Roots Music Commissions pick for Contemporary Country CD of the Year Ward. She is a performer on RFD TV’s Midwest Country Show on Sunday evening (on Direct TV and Dish Network), which has made her a familiar face in millions of homes across the country. She has won Female Vocalist of the Year Award in the Valley Star Awards in 2018 and 2019. This year she, and her singing partner, Dan Smith, are nominated for Musical Duet of the Year. Maggie is joined on her southern tour with the talented guitarist and vocalist Dan Smith. Dan has played with several bands throughout his career and has been a member of Maggie’s Heartland Country Band for the past five years. He is also a regular member of The Wisconsin Opry Show which is located in Wisconsin Dells. Maggie Mae and Dan Smith will be performing today, February 12, at 7 p.m.

at Paradise Park in Harlingen; on February 14 at 7 p.m. at Eastgate Mobile Home Park and RV Park in Harlingen; February 16 at 7 p.m. at Trophy Gardens in Alamo; February 18 at 7 p.m. and Mission Bell Resort in Mission; February 19 at the valley Star Awards; February 20 at 7 p.m. at Bentsen Grove Resort in Mission; and February 22 at 7 p.m. at Sunshine RV Resort in Harlingen.

The “Over-loaded baked potato” caught my daughter’s eye as she looked over the Pit Stop Smokehouse menu. I’m usually not a fan of the loaded baked potatoes when going out. Too many times I’ve been served a potato that’s mainly just a shell with the “overloaded” part doing nothing more than replacing the dug out actual potato part. That was anything but the case in this instance. In fact, the potato that came out of the pit was a behemoth in itself. The sour cream, butter, cheddar cheese and brisket turned this beast into a true super heavyweight. And as far as taste – it matched its size. The hint of smoky flavor from the pit, combined with savory brisket and other toppings made this more than a meal. In fact, it truly was big enough for two. My daughter dug in and ate to her heart’s content, put• Outdoor Patio ting just a tiny dent into this simple food, turned reshaped • Food Delivery into a monstrous delicacy. It was a great choice. Along with the meats I grabbed corn on the cob and green beans with bacon. This was a meal meant for a king. I immediately WTT_CouponConeorDish_Combo_3.218x3.09.indd 1 10/3/2019 grabbed some of the moist brisket slices and dropped them in between two slices of bread, tossed on a couple pieces of raw onion and covered it all with a dab of barbeque sauce and took a bite. The mixture of flavors erupted in my mouth. I know I chewed it, but it was gone in a heartbeat. The sausage followed suit, delectable with or without the sauce and with just the right firmness. Then came the recommendation – the ribs. Glistening meat filled my fork as I took my first bite. They knew what they were talking about when it came to my third choice; it was how ribs were meant to be. This is a place where you can order food that is carefully and slowly prepared by the pit masters, bring it home to family and/or friends, and celebrate excellence in Texas barbeque. A second location will be opening soon in La Feria, near Mercedes Outlet Malls.

The intensity was felt through the deafening silence as 19 teams competed to see who, after probably 5-6 hours of competition, would earn the rights to be named champion. Nineteen teams of two men or two women from 10 Encore Parks took their seats across from their partners, their opponents taking the opposite chairs as the battle for Bridge dominance began Monday morning at Victoria Palms RV Park and Resort. Bridge derived from the game “Whist” and dates back to as early at 15th century when a French author mentioned a game “La Triomphe” in one of his publications. These are the earliest known mentions of the game. Yeah, seven centuries later and I still have no clue. The 76 competitors, however, were pros, trying to gain points for their Winter Texan Park during the Encore Games, a three-week event involving the 10 Encore-owned parks in the Valley and comprised of 18 different competitions, from shuffleboard, pickleball and table tennis to Euchre, Texas Hold ‘em and Bridge. Unlike Euchre, a cardgame where cheating is allowed and in the rules (but a steep penalty is paid

if caught), Bridge is a game of pureness and etiquette. It’s also super quiet, the intensity and concentration so thick, it’s palpable – you can feel it. “This is a very competitive event,” said Bill Englert, coordinator for the 13th edition of the Encore Games, which when done will have more than 1,000 competitors who were in at least one of the events. “The men are even a little more intense than the ladies. You won’t hear a word out of the men.” Almost on cue, the door to Victoria Palms’ small card game room closed on us, our interview clearly breaking some concentration as the games began. As I walked through the large card game room, where the women were competing, barely was a word spoken oth-

second place. Competitions still left to play included Texas Hold ‘Em, 500, 10-point pitch, Pinochle and darts. But the only thing on anyone’s mind Monday morning was Bridge. “It’s a very quiet game and there’s a lot of strategy on how to play the cards,” Englert said. “You have to know the cards and it’s a really good competitive game. It’s very intense. They don’t turn on a radio or anything or they’ll run you right out. “The women might talk a little but the men, they have nothing to say.” Thus, another reason I haven’t learned to play pitch. I always – many times to my detriment – have something to say.

er than what players were going to bid. I snuck a few pictures during the time, receiving only one or two glares as if I were going to share a teammate’s hand via photo to the opponent. Not a bad idea, but I knew I wouldn’t make it safely out the door. Prior to the Bridge competition, Fun N Sun Resort was in first place and Victoria Palms had pulled into

Imagine if you could touch history and feel the rhythm of culture? Back for its 30th year, Pioneer and Ranching Crafts Day returns Saturday, February 15, at 10 a.m. to celebrate and showcase the heritage of South Texas and northeastern Mexico through music, food and handson activities. Edinburg North High School Mariachi Oro will commence the festivities with their whimsical horns, strings and voices. The talented students have impressed the crowds with Mexican ballads at the museum for many years. Local folklórico groups, such as Conceptos Entidad Dancística, RGV Folklórico and Grupo Juvenil de Palmview, will paint the stage with their brightly colored skirts and outfits and interpret the dances of the borderlands and Mexico. Los Cucuys de Rodney Rodriguez will perform live Conjunto music during their debut performance at the museum. Rodney Rodriguez began his 20-year ac-

cordion career at the age of 16 and made his professional start with Los Fantasmas del Valle. In 2017, Rodriguez created Los Cucuys de Rodney Rodriguez, which features bajo sexto player Siji Perez, bass player Beto Perez and percussionist Javier Perez. Pioneer and Ranching Crafts Day is a family-friendly event that makes history come to life with hands-on activities. Children will have the chance to stamp metal at a j e w e l e r ’s bench and take home their free creations. CHAPS UTRGV will provide historical Civil War uniforms for adults and children to try on. The UTRGV Anthropology Club will station a free petroglyph activity, giving children a chance to learn about engravings on rocks. In the museum’s Will Looney Legacy Park, the Texas Master Naturalists will present on the history and nurturing of native plants, and the Gladys Porter Zoo will showcase native animals and reptiles such as turtles.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES Try the basket weaving activity—it’s not as easy as it looks. Test the butter churning station and then taste the homemade butter on a piece of bread. Other homestead skills include knitting, leather work, cro-hooking, wood carving, wood burning, soap making, weaving and more. The world class Rio Grande Legacy Exhibition will be open during the event, and gallery hosts will dress in historical interpretative costumes and asking passersby to examine authentic artifacts and the sophisticated dioramas. There is no need to leave the event because there will be a variety of regional food and beverages to choose from. Visitors might want to enjoy barbecue from Q’in It Up BBQ, a local food truck. If you want to enjoy something small, try a snack or a roasted elote prepared by E&B Elotes. Other regional favorites include tacos de guisados en olla de barro, pan dulce, nieve Mexicana, aguas frescas and sodas. Pioneer and Ranching Crafts Day is included in the regular museum admission of $9 adults (ages 18+); $6 seniors with ID (ages 62+), students with ID (ages 13+), and active military. FRIENDS of the MOSTHistory are admitted free as a benefit of FRIENDships and must bring their FRIENDship card. For more information on the event or becoming a FRIEND, please call (956) 383-6911.

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC), the City of Brownsville and the National Park Service were joined Wednesday, January 29, by dozens of regional partners and participants of Challenge-RGV, the county-wide effort to inspire healthy eating and active living among residents, in celebrating the groundbreaking of the Battlefield Trail Extension. The project, a 1.8-mile extension to the City of Brownsville’s Historic Battlefield Trail, is the first phase in a plan to connect Brownsville with Los Fresnos by trail and is a project intended to increase access to public lands in the region. The Battlefield Trail Extension was funded with a $2 million grant from the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation (Legacy Foundation) to jumpstart Cameron County’s efforts to create new opportunities for physical activity and active transportation in a part of the country facing significant rates of chronic disease and poverty. It is the first of six Caracara Trails catalyst projects that are intended to accelerate development of the 428-mile trail network, which is poised to deliver significant health and economic benefits to the region. For example, the development of the trail network is expected to generate a 22 percent increase in physical activity to Cameron County residents and an annual health care cost savings of as much as $12.3 million. Construction of the trail network alone is expected to deliver a total economic impact of more than $173 million. “As we break ground on the Battle-

field Trail Extension, we’re marking a turning point for the health, wellness and economic potential of our region,” said Rose M.Z. Gowen, M.D., Brownsville city commissioner and a board member of RTC. “The Caracara Trails vision is already bringing new investment to Cameron County in the form of federal and private grants. Already, you can see families and friends out on the trails, having fun while building new routines in their lives around physical activity. Soon, we will connect Brownsville to Los Fresnos by trail, beginning with this trail extension. Our trail network vision and all that it can deliver for the health and economic growth of our region is being realized with each investment, each mile of trail built and each person who gets out for a walk, a run or a ride.” At the groundbreaking, officials from Brownsville, Los Fresnos, Port Isabel, Cameron County and the University of Texas (UTHealth) School of Public Health outlined progress being made on regional trail infrastructure projects that are beginning to build out the Caracara Trails Vision, including Brownsville to Los Fresnos Connect, a 2.5-mile trail project funded by a federal Transportation Alternatives grant, and the 1.1-mile Los Fresnos Hike and Bike Trail, funded by the Legacy Foundation and a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department grant. Together, with the Battlefield Trail Extension, these projects complete the connection between Brownsville and Los Fresnos. Other See BATTLEFIELD pg. 37

MHM offers She Came to the Valley screenings

The Mission Historical Museum gladly presents the 1979 western film: She Came to the Valley. The film is based on the novel written by local author, Cleo Dawson. Recent screenings were sold out, so the museum will be offering more opportunities to see the movie. Who is Cleo Dawson? Cleo Dawson was born in 1902. Her family was one of the first pioneer families who helped transform the frontier town of Mission into an incorporated city. They were the owners of one of the first convenience stores, Caballo Blanco. Her novel is inspired by the Lower Rio Grande Valley and Mission, Texas during its pioneer days. It is said to be based on Dawson’s mother’s experiences. The film was shot in South Texas’s Rio Grande Valley and Oklahoma. In its first

run it broke weekend attendance records at Rio Grande theatres. After writing her book, she attended Baylor University and became one of the nation’s most renowned speakers. In celebration of this Missionite, we’re presenting four special screenings of the film on February 20 and February 21. You’ll have the option between two showings each day, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Pre-sale of tickets only. We will be giving out a copy of the novel with the purchase of a ticket. Tickets are $5. Come by the museum and purchase your tickets today. For more information contact us at (956)580-8646. The museum is located at 900 Doherty Ave. in Mission.

Rodney Atkins, Los Palominos to perform at Fiesta Edinburg

Immanuel Lutheran Church and School Give us the great pleasure of meeting you!

Sunday Worship Service: 9am Bible Class: 10:30am

Pastor's Message for Sunday February 16th: "How God truly can change YOUR heart!" (Psalm 119:7)

The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce along with Title Sponsors Bert Ogden Fiesta Dealerships, City of Edinburg, and Edinburg Economic Development Corporation, proudly presents the 52nd Annual Fiesta Edinburg. On Friday, February 21st, Rodney Atkins will perform all his #1 hits and latest singles, and on Saturday, February 22nd, Los Palominos, a Valley favorite, will perform at H.E.B. Park, located at 1616 S. Raul Longoria Rd., in Edinburg. This award-winning country music artist, Rodney Atkins, did not even pick up a guitar till he was in high school. However, his interest in country music grew, and soon after graduating college, he began performing in Nashville. The opportunity to launch his career came in 1997 when he signed with Curb Records. After some hits and misses, he began making the country charts with songs like “Honest (Write me a List),” “Watching You,” “These are my People,” “If You’re Going Through Hell,” and “Farmer’s Daughter.” Rodney Atkins’ fifth studio album, Caught Up in the Country (5/10/19), reveals an artist who is confident enough to know that making your best music can require patience and experimentation. While his storied career has reached such heights as being named the Top New Male Vocalist at the 2006 ACM awards and seeing his single “Watching You” become the Number One Song of the Decade according to Country Aircheck, it’s been more than seven years since Take a Back Road, his last record of new material. But Atkins knew that this time, he wanted to bring his songs further than he had ever gone before. “I’ve never taken it lightly,” Rodney said, “but with some of the other albums, I got to take my time for part of the album. But then when you get that first single finished, you gotta go, and you start working at a faster pace for the second half of the

album. This time, I got to take that time with every song.” The results, he believes, are the most daring collection of his career, touching on emotions and sounds which continue to expand his range—from the twangy celebration of the album’s title track (featuring the roof-raising vocals of the Fisk Jubilee Singers) to the slow-burn cover of Jason Isbell’s “Cover Me Up.” And with six Number One singles, eight Top Five singles, and over 13 million units sold, Atkins sees that his track record validates his approach. With Caught Up in the Country, one of country music’s biggest stars is starting his next chapter. Honesty and simplicity characterize the innovative way to interpret the musical group Los Palominos. The musical group is originally from Uvalde, Texas, composed of Jaime (James) Arreola - lead vocalist, bajo sexto and guitar; Juan (Johnny) Arreola - vocals, keyboards, and accordion, Jorge Arreola - bass, and Julio Arreola - drums, Jesse Arreola (QEPD), have succeeded in breaking all boundaries, conquering the United States and Mexico, making them a well-established musical force, leaving their style and presence felt on every stage, forever memorable. The Arreola brothers are four young men united in their passion for music. From the beginning, in 1986, under the guidance of their father, also a musician, the Arreola brothers demonstrated a humble yet natural artistic way of presenting their music on stage leaving you with an image of triumph. Being such a young act, they named the group Los Tremendos Pequenos, that would later be changed to Los Temendos De Johnny Arreola, until they decided on the name Los Palominos.
