Long Island Village – Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Course

After three weeks of voting, Winter Texans have told us who their favorite golf course is this year. Winter Texans were asked to participate in a golf course survey for the past several weeks in which they voted for their all-around favorite golf course, and their favorite golf course by region as well. A big thank you to those the participated. Here are the top three favorite overall golf courses. FIRST PLACE LONG ISLAND VILLAGE, PORT ISABEL Two years ago, Long Island Village made its first appearance as a Winter Texan favorite earning second place in the Lower Valley, finishing between two perennial favorites – River Bend and South Padre Island course. Large showing for Winter Texan Fiesta

Lots of fun was had at this year’s Winter Texan Fiesta hosted by the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce. The weather was just about perfect for the outdoor concert – sunny, some clouds here and there and a nice cool breeze. There were probably close to 2,500 Winter Texans in attendance at the event this year. Some of those visitors, who were able to get a ticket beforehand, received a free Mission T-shirt and free lunch provided by Chick-Fil-A. There were other vendors on hand with drinks and other Valley favorites for purchase. Rich Bellert, as always, emceed the event and shared some of his cowboy poetry with the huge crowd gathered in front of the outdoor stage. Entertainers for the event included Dayle and Gayle, Rusty Rierson, Chari Heldenbrand and High Country, The Kenaston’s and the Chamberlin’s and Southern Express. The event started with the presentation of colors by the Mission Fire Department, See FIESTA pg. 24

Sew Sew Sisters

Some of the quilts made by the Sew Sew Sisters of Royal Palms Park are displayed. They are (seated from left) Carrol Moering, Sandra Burgess, Carah Maney (standing left) Carolyn Schneider, Carol McConnell and LaDone Will. By Herb Moering Quilting has become a serious hobby for many women (and some men too) wintering in the Rio Grande Valley. They are part of an estimated seven to 10 million quilters in the U.S. This upswing in interest has resulted in the formation of a number of groups at RV and mobile home parks in the Valley. The resurgence in this old art form has led to many different homemade projects including the creation of honor quilts given to U.S. armed services veterans. One of those groups calling attention to service rendered to this country is at Royal Palms Mobile Home Park in Alamo. The Sew Sew Sisters, who chose that name in 2010, have created 39 quilts to recognize veterans living in their park, along with five more presented to veterans honored during special events in the local community. As each veteran is introduced in those ceremonies at the local park, their service background is recounted, potentially triggering lots of memories. As the quilt is draped over the shoulders of each veteran it often becomes an emotional moment for the recipient and sometimes the presenters as well. “We do it because we are patriotic,” Carolyn Schneider said, in explaining the thinking behind the project. “We gain satisfaction in honoring the veterans for what they did,” added Sandra Burgess, another of the “Sisters” group. “Our freedom of speech and of religion is because they fought (for this nation), whether it was in war or not, wherever they served.” The final group of veterans at Royal Palms received their quilts at a park-

wide bean and ham soup potluck supper Jan. 29, hosted by the “Sisters.” The six vets included Bruce Johnson, who was in the U.S. Air Force from 1968 to 1972, attaining the rank of staff sergeant with service as a heavy equipment mechanic for a mobile radar outfit in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Edward Keech was in the western Pacific, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1961 on the flight deck of three different aircraft carriers. U.S. Army Specialist 4th class Denny Mattson was part of an Army engineering unit dealing with bridges from 1970 to 1977 in Oregon, Washington and Wisconsin. Roger Peterson was a U.S. Marine sergeant serving first in ordinance and then in an intelligence unit between 1965 and 1968 that involved 20 months in Vietnam on outer perimeter patrols. Orvin Rosaasen was in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1972 to 1978 with engineering units trained in ordinance while in Minnesota and then in water purification in North Dakota. U.S. Army Vietnam veteran Greg Sylvain served as a combat demolition engineer on the Cambodian border from 1968 to 1970. The first quilts were presented in 2015, starting with the oldest veterans in the park, Joe Brayer, Keith Gay, Harlan Mandler, Jack Avant, Frank Pope, Paul Pfeiffer and Norm Hall. In years following, those receiving quilts included Al Taber, Bob Hamilton, Glen Pfaff, Warren Pfeffer, Joe Blasey, Bill Engle, Bob Will, Norm Cooper, Don Groves, Joe Maney, Chuck Belew, Paul Niva, Chuck Eyerly, Jim Kivisto, Ralph Swenson, Gale Stewart, Dave Longerbone, Jon Schneider, Jim McGowan, Andy Anderson, Joe Gerst, See SEW pg. 6

Red Hat Queens learn about sugar cane industry

By Kathy Olivarez The Red Hat Queens of the Rio Grande Valley held their February meeting at the Texas Travel Center in Harlingen where they viewed, “Sugar Growers,” a documentary about the development of the sugar cane industry in the Rio Grande Valley. They also learned about the services offered by the Texas Travel Information Center. While sugar cane was grown in the Valley before the Civil War, the first attempt at making it a commercial crop came in 1913 when a sugar cane mill was established. However, this attempt was short-lived due to a lack of technology and a declining economy. By 1921 the

mill had closed. By the 1960’s technology had improved and growers in Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy Counties once again began experimenting with sugar cane production. Planting begins with cane plants being buried horizontally under three to four inches of dirt. Sugar cane is a water-thirsty crop and irrigation methods had improved so that water could reach the crops. Depending on rainfall, sugar cane crops need from 30 to 60 inches of irrigation water per year. Planters test the juice level in the stalks to determine when the cane is ready for harvest. When the

Bill Chrastil – More than Elvis

Bill Chrastil is probably best known for his tribute and impersonation of Elvis Presley. He’s won local, state and national awards for that portion of his show. But Chrastil is so much more than that – and he’s changed some things around this year that has people “swinging” to his music. “I’ve added some 70s songs, some that people never really heard of, but I see them moving back and forth in their chair,” said Chrastil, the 2016-2018 Valley Star Awards Male Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year. “I tell the audience that they are going to be moving around in their chairs with these songs, just don’t move something you can’t put back.” Chrastil is back in the Valley for his seventh straight year. Some of his new material includes “Back in Love Again” by LTD and Isaac Hayes’ “Don’t Let Go.” “I also added a couple female songs,” Chrastil said. “Harper Valley PTA and These Boots Were Made for Walking.

Those are two songs that you get going and get to the chorus and the audience will take it from there.” But the versatility and variety doesn’t stop there. Chrastil said he started exploring some Tom Jones and found out that Jones did some cover tunes, included “Kiss” by Prince. Chrastil is also working on Prince’s “Purple Rain,” and “Let’s Go Crazy.” “I love that guitar solo on ‘Purple Rain,’” Chrastil said. “The best part about music is that you’re never, ever done. There’s always something more.” Talking about “something more,” Chrastil will also perform a song in four different voices. He’ll begin the song with Willie Nelson’s, and then Julio Iglesias will take over the second voice. “I’ll do the third verse in my voice,” he said. “Then end it with Elmer Fudd.” Chrastil’s second set at his shows will be his tribute to Elvis Presley. His favorite Elvis songs are “Words,” “Suspicious Minds,” and “My Way.” Elvis is an artist

that transcends the generations, loved by 18 and 81-year-olds alike. In fact, Chrastil was taken to show and tell for a firstgrade class recently. “They took me to this class, and they were singing all the words to “Hound Dog,” said Chrastil, adding that this season he is performing Elvis during his Las Vegas years. “I even had a 12-year-old girl come up to me and tell me she was a big Elvis fan and asked me to sign a card for her. “That music is loved everywhere and it’s not going away.” A wide variety of audiences attend Chrastil’s shows and because of his active engagement with the people in his shows, he can read which way to go – from 50s music to Classic Rock. “It’s really great,” he said. “And there’s always so much more to do.” For more information on Bill Chrastil, including to book him, visit www.billchrastil.com. Favorite golf courses by Valley region

Winter Texans in the Rio Grande Valley participated in a survey recently to let us know what their favorite parks were. While the top three overall in the Valley were highlighted in our front page story – here are the top three by region area in the Valley. FAVORITE UPPER VALLEY COURSES FIRST - Palm View Golf Course, McAllen This should be no surprise, especially when the golf director goes out knocking on doors to see how he and his staff can better serve the Winter Texan community.

The course is always in the best shape and has recently added a driving range the size of a small planet. Palm View Golf Course is located at 2701 S Ware Rd., McAllen. Phone (956) 681-3444. SECOND – Los Lagos Golf Club, Edinburg

with moguls and has some of the purest fairways around. Some of the holes are also set up where the fairways lean a bit toward the water hazards and, of course, on those holes the wind always seems to be blowing toward those hazards as well. The clubhouse also has one of the best burgers in the land – yet another reason to be a Winter Texan favorite. Los Lagos is located at 1720 S Raul Longoria Rd, Edinburg. Phone (956) 3160444. THIRD – Tierra Del Sol, Pharr

This course brings a different look and approach to the Valley, and the wind here is something golfers can talk about for years. The course is covered

Four years ago, this golf course had stopped being mentioned by golfers – residents and Winter Texan visitors alike. The city of Pharr decided to do something about that and invested about a million dollars to give the course a total makeover. The results were beyond what they expected and now both locals and Winter Texan visitors are back on the course, rediscovering some of the wide open – and lengthy holes – that are quite a challenge. And the breakfast tacos, yeah, you have to snag some of those, so get there early. Tierra Del Sol is located at 700 E Hall Acres Rd, Pharr. Phone (956) 402-4545. FAVORITE MID VALLEY COURSES FIRST – Tierra Santa Golf Course, Weslaco As soon as you drive up and see the outside of this Mid-Valley beauty, it’s obvious it’s going to be a special round. From the late dogleg left on No. 1, with a tight fairway and mounds on both sides, to the beautifully built No. 18, the

absolute most memorable finishing hole in the Valley, Tierra Santa is a perennial power when it comes to being a Winter Texan favorite. And, just like many of the favorite courses, this course is reinvesting back into the property. Seems there is a pattern there. The course is located at 1901 Club de Amistad, Weslaco. Phone (956) 9731811. SECOND – Treasure Hills Country Club, Harlingen This course went from one that was virtually forgotten and on the selling block to one of the most regular visited, and enjoyed, courses in the Valley. Treasure Hills offers a different type of layout where golfers can enjoy shot making opportunities. Many fairways are wide open but golfers need to be smart on which side and

how far they want to hit their ball, even though the temptation is to “grip it and rip it.” If you haven’t been to Treasure Hills in a while, you’re missing out. It provides a variety of challenges and there are different elevations throughout the revived course. Treasure Hills is located at 3009 N Augusta National Dr, Harlingen. Phone (956) 4251700. THIRD – Tony Butler Municipal Course, Harlingen Not only are some of the holes spectacular, this course provides too much history that it beckons players to come and enjoy it.

Possibly the oldest course in the Valley, it has been played by leg-

endary golfers – and we’re not talking just the greatest Winter Texans of all time. When you go out to play here, take some time to learn about its history and who the course is named after. It will add a little more enjoyment to your round. Tony Butler is located at 2640 Golf Course Dr, Harlingen. Phone (956) 2165970. FAVORITE LOWER VALLEY GOLF COURSES FIRST – Long Island Village, Port Isabel The king for a year, this little dainty wind-stricken golf is the favorite golf course for Winter Texans. Hey, why not, some of the holes play about 110

or, more than likely 140 or more yard shot with the wind in your face. This course was a best kept secret just a couple years ago. It sure isn’t any more. Long Island Village is located at 950 S Garcia St, Port Isabel. Phone (956) 9437520. SECOND – River Bend Golf Course and Country Club, Brownsville Many people seem to have thought that this course was for residents on the course property only. That’s when the owners decided to “get the word out” and now Winter Texans flock to River Bend. The course has cleaned up a bit too, removing trees and thick brush along the Rio Grande, where several holes run adjacent. This not only adds to the challenge of See REGION pg. 22

River Bend is located at 4541 US-281, Brownsville. Phone (956) 4650705. THIRD – South Padre Island Golf Club This course should be the prima donna of South Texas. It’s working its way back to that spot with new ownership.

More grass from tee to green, completed path carts, new sand instead of hard pan – these are just some of the improvements that SPI golf has done to start its return as one of the premiere courses in South Texas. It already has a spectacular layout, amazing scenery overlooking the Laguna Madre and the island itself, and it has a wind that’s actually second to none in the Valley. The American Junior Golf Association Tour is also making a stop here in April, another sign of the quality its working to achieve. Everything about this course is on the rise, so now is a great time to go check it out. South Padre Island Golf Course is located at 1 Golf House Rd, Laguna Vista. Phone (956) 943-4653.

cane is ready, the fields are burned so the leaves and plant stubble are gone leaving the stalks for easy harvesting. Today a 40acre field can be burned in 20 minutes. The remaining cane is cut and loaded into large trucks to be taken to the mill for harvesting. Once the trucks are weighed the truck dumps the load into the mill for the juice extraction process. The cane is cooked until crystals form. Up to 70,000 tons of sugar crystals can be loaded on to barges at time for transport to the Domino Sugar processing plant. Remaining syrup will be used to make molasses for cattle feed. Sara Van Wyk, director of the Texas Travel Information Center, told guests the site is one of seven destination centers located in Texas. It represents the Gulf Coast and South Texas Plains Regions of Texas. It offers visitors information about all regions of Texas, not just the local area. Each visitor was given a packet with a guide to the Rio Grande Valley, a 2020 map of Texas, a guide to Texas Wildflowers, and a pamphlet on the Texas Tropical Trail. They also received a map and guide to the sites of San Antonio, the largest city in this region. And of course, there was a Texas State Travel Guide highlighting the best stops to make in each region of Texas. Van Wyk asked the queens to tell oth-

ers in their parks to come visit the center and get these items along with some of the many pamphlets on sites they may want to visit in other regions of Texas as they travel home. Afterwards the ladies met for lunch and a business meeting at La Playa where plans for the annual Festival of Tables to be held at Trophy Gardens on February 19 were finalized. This is the meeting where Red Hatters from all over the Rio Grande Valley meet for lunch. Queens also reported field trips to the Harlingen Conservatory, Channel 5, the Brownsville Fine Arts Museum and other locations with their groups.

From the Cheap Seats ‘Bowling’ making a comeback?

It was probably 10 years ago that I stepped onto a bowling lane and had the greatest game of my life. My team was in the semifinals of our league tournament and I was horrible, barely managing a 120 average for the season. On this day, however, for one game, I came through. Out of nowhere everything lined up and fell, as they were supposed to. When we were done, I had rolled a 268 and we were moving onto the semifinals. Reality is cruel, however, and it took me two games to surpass the 268 I had bowled in that one game. My passion for bowling was struck down for good. It’s back, however, after walking through Bit O Heaven’s bowling alley. Well, it’s not really a bowling alley, but every Monday for eight straight weeks you can hear the balls barreling down the alleys and the pins clashing as the ball strikes them. This is Wii Bowling, and it’s the most popular activity at the Donna RV park as 200 bowlers compete in the league. Bonnie Cadwalader is from Illinois and she has been at Bit O Heaven for 20 years. She’s been part of the Wii Bowling league – which consists of four-person teams – since it started. Recently she bowled a 300 and last week she was on her way for a second perfect game. People gathered around to watch her strike gold for a second time. They collectively cheered as she sent the final ball down the lane. Perfection wasn’t for her this time, but who’s gonna be upset with a 297? “They startled me there at the end,” she said. “That’s why.” Bonnie is a small lady with a gigantic and fun personality. She isn’t a regular bowler but she’s a competitor on the Wii Bowling lanes. She also loves to play shuffleboard and, I was told, the 88-yearold from Illinois can “kick it up a notch or two on the dance floor as well.” Kip Smith who, two years ago bowled

back-to-back perfect games and ended coming barely short of a perfect series with three straight 300s, is among the top 20 Wii Bowlers at the park. He said he hasn’t bowled at an alley since probably when he was in eighth grade but enjoys the eight weeks. As part of a 10-person committee, he said it takes a lot of volunteer hours to make sure everything is done right – from putting the TVs up on the wall, connecting the Wiis and troubleshooting on match days take hours to keep the team and individual stats up to date. Currently, Diane Hart leads all bowlers in total pins with 4,968 of ‘em knocked down. She’s 170 pins ahead of Bruce Allen at 4,798 and 284 ahead of Jim Allen. Ralph Hart is fourth at 4,322 while Roger Olson rounds out the top five at 4,322. Hart is also part of team “Incredibowls,” who have 16,925 total pins on the season. “The Bikers” are close in second with 16,576. The next closest is team “The Agates” with 14,752. While the Wii Bowling league is for fun, as most Winter Texan activities are, there’s still the feel of heated competition in the air. You can hear the cheers for strikes or tough spares picked up, and the groans when the 7-pin stays firm. Marielle Pare threw both arms up in the air after she clamored home a strike. Another bowler in the next lane leaned far to his right, hoping that would affect the path of the ball to the pins – it didn’t, but he looked great doing it. At one point I got in the way of one bowlers backswing as I made a straight line to the snack table. The glare stayed with me the rest of the time there. And I swear I heard the words “knock you down,” muttered as I excused myself and walked away. Suddenly, my 120 average came back to the front of my memory. Maybe I’ll wait a little more to get into bowling. But when I do, it definitely will be Wii Bowling.

ON THE ROAD with Jo Liston

Charro Days – A fiesta since 1937 There is something for everyone in the Rio Grande Valley so you should never be bored. Do you like to quilt? Then how about a visit to the Harlingen Arts and Heritage Museum located at 2425 Boxwood St. There is no entry fee, but donations are appreciated. Or better yet, why not visit the museum and be inspired to join in a mosaic art glass that will teach one how to make Turkish lamps. The class will be taught by Marco Antonio Martinez, an artist from Matamoros, Mexico. On display now at the museum is a beautiful mosaic and tile sphere that was created by Mr. Martinez. The sphere and a nearby bench are covered with flowers and plants native to our local area. Call the museum at (956) 216-490l for more information regarding the classes to be offered. Or maybe you like something a little more exhilarating. If so, then what could be better than the Street Dance in Brownsville, sponsored by the Charro Association. The Street Dance, scheduled for February 22 at 455 E. Elizabeth, and last-

ing from 2-8 p.m. is the kickoff to Charro Days. Featured will be food, live music and folkloric dance. There is no entry fee. If you really want to join in the spirit of things, dress in your best Mexican attire the more authentic, the better. Charro Days in Brownsville is a wonderful celebration of the friendship and cross river connections that exist between Brownsville and Matamoros, their Sister City. Charro Days Fiesta doesn’t just last one day and not everything is free. You might say that the Fiesta compares somewhat to the Carnivals celebrated in New Orleans, Galveston or in Mazatlan, Mexico. Not to be outdone, Charro Days also goes on for quite a few days with multiple parades both daytime and nighttime. There is a Children’s Parade scheduled for Feb. 27; an Illuminated Parade on Friday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m.; and on Saturday, Feb. 29 a Color Guard Parade at 12:30 p.m. and the Grand International Parade at 1 p.m. The parades are always very colorful with costumed dancers, marching bands and decorated cars and floats. the parades travel down Elizabeth Street - the main street of Brownsville - and through the downtown historic district. On Sunday, Feb. 23, there is a presentation of “A Little Bit of Mexico” from 5:30-7:30 p.m. with an entry fee of $20 per person. It must really be a treat to attend the Costume Ball which will be held in the Jacob Brown Auditorium on Feb. 29. Can you imagine that huge ballroom filled with couples dressed in the elaborate and colorful regional costumes of Mexico? What a beautiful site it must be to see the ladies in the brightly embroidered Chiapaneca dresses or the colorful tiered skirts from Guadalajara. The men will look more handsome than ever in their silver studded charro suits or in their elegant fine cotton guayavera shirts. Music will be by Noe Pro and there is an entrance fee of $30. The Charro Day fiesta is probably the longest fiesta in existence in the Rio Grande Valley. It was in 1937, at the height of the Great Depression, when business leaders in Brownsville met to discuss what might be done to lighten the spirits of the people of their community. A year later, in February 1938, the first Charro Days Fiesta was celebrated honoring the charros, the gentlemen cowboys of the Mexican culture. The two cities Brownsville and Matamoros - have since joined together to celebrate their friendship and community spirit. In years past the border was open for free movement so that friends and family could join together

in the celebration. Today, the mayors of both cities meet in the middle of Gateway Bridge to inaugurate the festivities. Hats off to Brownsville, Matamoros and the Charro Days Committee who have worked to maintain the celebration, the friendship and the mutual respect that exists between the two cities.

the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance and an invocation by Rev. Roy Snipes. Title sponsors Mission hospital and Bert Ogden welcomed those in attendance, as did City of Mission Mayor Dr. Armando O’Cana. Brenda Enriquez from Mission Chamber also shared a few words. All of them thanked those in attendance for everything the Winter Texans do for the great City of Mission. Mission Historical Museum hosted their Artesano Market Days inside the Mission Events Center. The event featured Mexican artisans with so many different works of art to share. Vendors filled the indoor banquet area showing their wares and arts for purchase. There was a lot of talent in that small space. C.J. Sanchez, vice present at the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce, was pleased with the turnout of the event and is already thinking of next year.

He pointed straight to the Red Fish Rockefeller and said “this is it. It’s great.” There was no “everything on the menu is great,” or “people order this a lot.” I asked for the best and he gave me a straightforward answer. WTT_CouponConeorDish_Combo_3.218x3.09.indd 1 10/3/2019 1:13 So that’s what I ordered, along with an appetizer of stuffed mushrooms. Given the amount of clientele in the restaurant, I was a little surprised at how quickly the six large (and defiBreakfast Special nitely stuffed) mushrooms were delivered. Lightly covBuy One Breakfast Meal Get 2nd One THE ered in an Alfredo sauce and Parmesan cheese, these delightful shrooms were packed with crab meat and some shrimp. The sauce was not overpowering in flavor and was a terrific compliment for the fish which, while flakey also had a little bit of firmness to it and with the large portion - all over a bed of rice - made it more than a challenge to finish. I, however, was up for it. I chose my fish blackened, but it wasn’t over powerful. In fact, the entire dish was made perfectly for me to use one of the restaurant’s several choices for a hot sauce. This truly made the fish dish a masterpiece. It enhanced the smooth, mild flavors of the fish, rice and sauce adding just a tiny kick of heat. I have a hard time sometimes picking something from a menu as varied as this one. Having a server guide me in such a polite and confident way, answering the question exactly as I presented it, made for a terrific dining experience. I don’t know if the Red Fish Rockefeller was the best on the menu, but it certainly was delicious. Hopefully, I’ll get the same server next time and he’ll be able to answer my next question - what’s the second-best thing on your menu?

the dining and pro shop area. Tierra Santa is known for the prettiest, and one of the most challenging closing holes in Texas. But it has a variety of hidden gems, including the split fairway No. 8 hole. A golfer can try to go over the water on the left side or be safe and go right – then still have to go over water for an approach shot into the green. So, basically, a golfer can find water on every

shot on that hole. There are four sets of tees, ranging from 5,300 to 7,100-plus yards. With 14 lakes, and plenty of strategically placed sand traps, Tierra Santa provides plenty of challenges for all levels of golfer. The course is located at 1901 Club de Amistad, Weslaco. Phone number is (956) 973-1811.

AMBASSADORS

From whole array of fun activities. You’ll want to tell your friends about the dances in your park, the jam sessions, craft sales, pancake breakfasts, ice cream socials and the wonderful Wintertainers™ performing daily in the resorts. If you like country music, there’s a jam for you and a number of quality bands performing for country-western dances. If your preference is rock-n-roll or bluegrass, you’re not disappointed. There are many talented performers who come to the Rio Grande Valley from Branson, Nashville and other locales during the winter season. Be sure to tell your friends about the very affordable cost of living in the Rio Grande Valley! Not only do you save a ton of money on heating fuel to keep you warm in the winter, but everything costs less than in most other areas of the country. It’s a great place to make your retirement dollars stretch further, enabling you to enjoy a great lifestyle with all your new friends in Deep South Texas. Don’t forget to tell them it’s SAFE here. We all know there has been a lot of bad press about what’s happening in

pg. 1 Mexico, but the Rio Grande Valley cities have some of the lowest crime rates in the country. The Winter Texan Times will be publishing our third annual “Take Home Edition” of the paper on March 11 for you to take home with you so you can show your friends up north all the fun times we have here in the Rio Grande Valley. If you can help us spread the word, give us a call today and tell us how many papers you would like to take back north with you to share with others. Most people take 10 to 20 extra copies of the Take Home Edition to share with their friends. We hope you will do the same and invite your friends to come down with you next winter and give us a try. Give us a call at (956) 580-7800 and we will put you on our list of Winter Texan Ambassadors and make arrangements for you to get the papers you need. If you are leaving before March 11, take some extra copies of our earlier editions, including today’s paper, to share with the folks back home.

Humane Society, which receives a small amount of funding from the city but is mainly funded through donations. Battocletti said they raised a total of $1,702.45 this year, an increase more than double the $700 garnered last winter. Much of the funding came through a dog and cat contest on a 50/50 raffle that was new this year. Selling tickets were a quartet costumed like dogs and cats, Lexa Bentley and Susie Lanier from Sunshine RV, and Karen Balbert and Henry Blankenship from nearby sister park Tropic Winds. A silent auction of donated items also

was new this year and helped add to the total. Battocletti praised local businesses for the great donations, noting none of the owners turned down her request. The help was much appreciated according to Lillian Kim, a Humane Society board director, who thanked the park for their support. Sarah Cano, HSH communications director, told the audience that the society is nearing its goal of becoming a “no kill shelter,” not having to euthanize any animals. She noted that in January of 2019 they were only able to save 30 percent of stray animals turned over to the shelter. But last month the save rate was nearly 82 percent thanks to an increase in adoptions and rescue transport efforts. The shelter is being helped in saving more

animals by the Best Friends organization out of Utah. To promote adoptions, the humane society paraded a half-dozen dogs across the carpet for spectators to view. HSH also was willing to waive adoption fees with a donation and were offering lowcost microchipping and nail trimming. All pets are vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Contestants, who have been in the Ms. South Texas Senior America Pageant were at the show to promote the upcoming event in Harlingen that was held Feb. 16. It is the only event south of Dallas that is held for women “60 and better.” Joie Quick, who is the 2019 Ms. South Texas Nobility title holder, was on a special

She was joined at the presentation by three other pageant winners, Neida Ruth Grantland, Mary Jo Vela, and Elia Lopez, theW founder and director of the pageant. h As the show wound down, Battoclet- e ti, who has participated in dog shows up d north, offered her profound thanks to allt those who helped her in putting on the I one-of-a-kind show in the Valley. e h d 3 J R 5 g t (
