We’ve been busy again over here at the Winter Texan Times. We tried to get out as much as possible, but there were places and people we just couldn’t get to. We almost had to place requests in a hat and pick one to go to when we could. You want us out there and we are trying our best to come and see you. Photos and Story by Henry Miller Winter Texans have a gold mine in front of them, a virtual underground music scene that the remainder of the Valley only gets a glimpse of, at most. The Ninth Annual Valley Star Awards highlighted much of that elite entertainment at Mission Bell Resort in Mission last week and Helen Russell and Company came out the biggest of the winners. Helen and her husband Elvis were named not only Individual/Small Band/Variety Act of the Year, but also came away with the Entertainer of the Year title as well. “We come every year with the expectation that there are so many great acts, they work hard and we're all here to entertain and make people laugh and have a good time,” said Helen, whose act has won the Individual/Small Band/Variety Act three times so far. “We don't claim See HIGHLIGHTS pg. 2

A three hour tour, history and dolphins

By Herb Moering Local history is what passengers received during a day aboard ship on a Breakaway Cruise out of South Padre Island on Feb. 19. The 64 mostly Winter Texans on the three-hour excursion learned about the Port of Brownsville’s thriving industries, watched dolphins leaping out of the waters, saw pelicans and seagulls and enjoyed a shrimp boil lunch. The group was a hardy bunch under the overcast skies, with a brisk breeze and slowly falling temperatures, heralding the arrival of a cold front in the Valley. But the cool conditions didn’t seem to faze them, with lots of conversation as those aboard became acquainted with new peoSee TOUR pg. 6

WINTER TEXAN TIMES RAMBLINGS

From These past two weeks we decided to try watching some sports we haven’t taken a chance to look at yet and we got to enjoy a lot of entertainment as well. We went out one morning to a shuffleboard tournament at Ranchero Village. We tried to follow the games, but I do think we still have a lot to learn – and we definitely don’t know any of the terminology. Ranchero Village has 24 shuffleboard courts and it looked like all but two were being used during their tournament – which meant they had nearly 90 players shuffling the morning we stopped by. We took some photos, some of which can be seen inside this issue. We had a great time watching the players. Another sport, one that has become popular in recent years, was pickleball. Casa Del Valle held a ribbon cutting for their new pickleball courts. They had a tournament after the ribbon cutting for amateur and experienced players. You could tell

pg. 1 which players were a little more experienced as they walked in with their own rackets, a change of shoes, or other special gear. That looked like a game I could get into. To me, it seemed like a cross between tennis and ping pong. We were able to get some insight to the game before we had to leave to go somewhere else. The courts are nice and fresh. It was a beautiful day and players did struggle a bit to keep the breeze from helping or hindering their game. The sun wasn’t too bad that day, helping warm the players on what started out as a chilly

morning. Saturday, February 15, was nearly a full day just with Mission’s Winter Texan Fiesta. It was a beautiful day to have an outd o o r concert. There w a s great entertainment, lots of attendees and a market showcasing some beautifully handmade arts. We started the day early – and some Winter Texans were already there getting their front row seats when things were still being set up. Mission gave out free food and T-shirts to those who got tickets ahead of time. Otherwise, there were some vendors providing food and drinks. We were able to talk to a lot of you that visited our booth at the event. We learned a lot from you, and we like hearing what you think of us – good or bad. Thank you for sharing with us and helping us enjoy the time we spend with you.

We also had the opportunity to see Fred Renk’s last Santa Maria Bullfight. It was thrilling as we watched the matadors get the bulls riled up and take turns getting the flowers off their back – which signifies the kill that is done in other countries. Apparently, the tradition of the bloodless bullfights will continue with someone else in charge. We look forward to seeing the success of the new endeavor. Last Wednesday was a very full day. As most of you know, we had the Valley Star Awards. This event was truly exciting and SO MUCH FUN! I can’t tell you how awesome it was

here and very friendly.” Much to the delight of the passengers, shortly after leaving the dock a dolphin was spotted nearby. Capt. Justin Smith later explained that the bottlenose dolphins remain here year-round because “they have the good life with plenty of food.” They are smaller than the other eight dolphin species, which tend to live in deeper Gulf waters. Smith has been boning up on his South Texas history during his first season with Breakaway Cruises after being in the Florida Keys and Puerto Rico. He obtained his captain’s license three years ago but related he had been a deckhand for many years because of a love of being on the water. He expects to return to staying in Port Isabel in the future where he likes the winter season and noted he has a daughter living in Dallas. The captain’s history lesson included noting that the Port of Brownsville is the only deep-water port on the U.S.-Mexico border with some 40,000 acres available for development and some 17 miles of waterfront access, plus offering a direct

Cargo, he said, includes steel products and different forms of food commodities. Scrapping of ships no longer of use included three smaller U.S. aircraft carriers that were dismantled a couple years ago. Shipbuilding is also going on as passengers saw the first of two container ships ordered by Honolulu-based Pasha Hawaii Company with options for two more. Oil rigs are mostly in the process of being refurbished. Then there is the shrimping industry, with most of the 180 boats in berths along the channel, as the harvesting season doesn’t open until July. Smith said it is very demanding work often with some danger in being at sea for several months at a time. Shrimping is usually a family tradition with the port’s fleet accounting

They are so humble and put their thankfulness where it belongs – in you and God. I tell you what – there is some great entertainment that comes to the Valley to share their talents with us down here. I loved hearing the old country songs I grew up with and hearing songs I had not heard in a while. They know how to sing, how to yodel, dance and make those watching happy. I look forward to many years of seeing more entertainers … entertain us and you. That same evening, my husband and I went and saw the Glenn Miller Orchestra at Casa Del Sol. This was a pure delight. I can remember listening to the songs they played when I was a child at my grandparents’ house. Loved seeing the players really enjoy the production. They had such talented musicians. ON THE ROAD with Jo Liston

Watch out for double meanings

How we express ourselves in different languages has always been of interest to me. The way we say things tells us a lot about a person’s cultural background. Unfortunately, I know only one language other than English and that is Spanish. But what an expressive language Spanish is! Not long ago, I walked into my office and the bookkeeper said in Spanish...”Ya viene el calzon sin gente”. Needless to say, I was a little taken aback for the saying that I had always heard was “gente sin calzones”. The second saying has a double meaning. You really need to watch for those double meanings when speaking Spanish. My reaction was, of course - “ What did you say?” To get you in the loop, the literal translation was “here comes the person without underwear” which is to say I had lost a lot of weight and my clothes were hanging on me. That was a play on words and a re-working of the common saying “gente sin calzones”...translated means people without underwear. I will let your mind run wild with the last and original saying. I can’ t remember all the words, but there

is even a song in Spanish called Sin Calzones, Sin Calzones. The Spanish language is much, much more expressive than English and sometimes the Spanish language gets right to the point while in English we may use a lot of words to say the same thing. For instance, let’s talk about speaking the truth. In English, we might say, “I want you to tell me the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth;” while in Spanish, one might say, Tell me the “verdaddesnuda.” Tell me the “naked truth.” Now that is really expressive! Can you imagine the truth being naked - just the bare truth with no embellishments, no excuses and no blaming someone else? It’s just the naked truth! Another common saying in Spanish regards being tough, the one in control, the one strong enough to make the decisions and stand by them. We may say, “Who wears the pants in the family?” The equivalent in Spanish would be “No traes los pantelones?” That is almost an insult in Spanish and certainly gets the point across when someone is wishy, washy and can’t

From ter. That's what I'm hoping for, to see where it takes us,” continued Curt. “Certainly, anybody who is a performer has had some kind of dream growing up to do this, to perform on a big scale. Because of the Showcase and other opportunities, you get all these amazing entertainers in one place at one time – we've developed our own little Nashville down here. They come from Las Vegas, Branson, Florida, Nashville and elsewhere, all honing their trade and I get to perform in the community and hobnob with these people – like Shake, Rattle and Roll or Rusty Rierson – who also want to come down here and spend some time performing. It really charges me up.” Before the Entertainer of the Year was announced, Jim Brunson, recently retired publisher of the Winter Texan Times, was awarded the Heritage Award by Robert and Billie Ferguson. The Ferguson’s said the award was to show their appreciation for his decades of work in and for the Winter Texan and entertainment communities.

pg. 2 Other awards included Shake, Rattle and Roll for Musical Group of the Year; Rte 66 for Rock n Roll Band of the Year; Absolutely Country, Definitely Gospel for Gospel Group of the Year; Williamson Branch won the Family Vocal Group of the Year. Dave & Daphne not only brought the crowd to their feet during their performance at the awards, but also captured another Duet Musical Group of the Year Award; Castaway was named Novelty or Comedy Act of the Year and Regan James & Hired Hand were awarded Country Western Band of the Year. “We're very excited and happy to be selected for the award,” Regan James said. “We're the only country band that consists of all Winter Texans – three from Minnesota and one from Ohio – so that's really neat. We didn't really expect this award, but we work hard and have a lot of fun with the dances. We're blessed to be all retired and to still do something we love. It's just great.”

make a decision. Not long ago, a lady was overheard as she innocently made a comeback with a double meaning. Shock was registered on the Spanish gentleman’s face before he burst out laughing. The gentleman offered to assist the lady as, using a walker,

she stepped up on a high sidewalk curb - a rather difficult undertaking. When he offered assistance, the lady replied - “No, I can do it, but a man is always better.” Remember the advice? Watch out for those double meanings!

Tom Wurth isn’t just on vacation Tom Wurth was a pleasure to hear and watch at last week’s Valley Star Awards. He has a resonating voice that adds to the country music he sings. You will hear him talk about “staying constant,” being real and natural. These things resonate in the songs he writes, those he chooses to record and in every aspect of his career. He has a commitment to real and natural music. It is music you can count on with every song and at every show. In his recent album, “A Different Soul,” Wurth shows his roots from his small-town up-bringing to his musical roots that are evident with the collaborations found on the album which includes Vince Gill, T. Graham Brown and John Ford Coley. At twenty years of age, Wurth was nominated for a Grammy for his music. That milestone built a foundation for his career, helping him push forward into his songwriting aspirations. With his songwriting, he became a staff writer with Belden, and later with BMG Music Publishing. He soon found the best school for him was on the road playing and in the studio recording. He took to both and never

looked back. He has shared the stage with some of the most respectful and successful artists including Eddie Money, Larry Gatlin, Lonestar, Billy Dean, Ronnie Milsap, Rascal Flatts, Pam Tillis, Mel Tillis, Marty Stuart, Clay Walker and many others. In 2006, he signed his first record deal, in which some of those reached top place on music charts and CMT.com. In 2012, his album “Midnight Rain,” brought together his soulful blend of country with his trademark additions of R&B and gospel. He spent nearly two year’s producing his newest album “A Different Soul.” Music isn’t just a vacation for Wurth – it defines him as a person. He only has a few more show remaining this season until he returns in January next year. His remaining shows are February 28 at Circle T Park in Mission at 7 p.m.; March 6 at Llano Grande Lake Park Resort in Mercedes 3 p.m.; March 7 at Sunshine RV Resort in Harlingen at 7 p.m.; and March 8 at Alamo Palms RV Resort at 6 p.m. To find out more about Tom Wurth, visit his website at tomwurth.com.

Ferguson accepts Proclamation from City of Mission

Robert and Billie Ferguson accepted a Proclamation from the City of Mission this week in recognition of the Rio Grande Valley Activity Directors Association. The proclamation says, “We the City Council of the City of Mission proclaim March 1, 2020 as Activity Directors Appreciation Day.” The proclamation also lists why the city is thankful for the activity directors, saying they enhance and promote unity among the directors of the retirement parks of the Rio Grande valley by promoting networking, information, resources and support; the demands of the job; that residents and management realize the importance of the activity director to the atmosphere of the park; and what the activity director’s responsibilities are – organizing activities, encouraging residents to socialize, etc. Robert shared his thankfulness with the city council pointing out there are 119 active parks represented in the association and that 35 of those are in the City of Mission.

Activity Director Appreciation Day is coming

It’s time to show your activity director some love. March 1 each year has been designated as Activity Appreciation Day, but this year we will celebrate on Monday, March 2. The Rio Grande Valley Activity Directors Association (RGVADA) will host an Appreciation Party for area activity directors at Mission Bell ballroom beginning at 11 a.m. on March 2. Lunch will be provided along with door prizes and entertainment. Invitations have been mailed to the parks, but if your park did not get one, please call Billie Ferguson at (865) 2532514 or email at billieraeg@gmail.com so you can be added to the list. All activity directors are invited, but you do need to

RSVP. You can RSVP at rgvada.org or by calling or emailing Billie Ferguson. How are you going to honor your Activity Director? We have an opportunity for parks, entertainers and local businesses. If you would like to have a table at this event, contact Billie and she’ll get you all set up. Remember, your activity director is the heart of your park. While most of us are attending happy hours, swimming or looking for a new place to eat, they are busy keeping everything on an even keel. They work many, many hours that nobody realizes. Take some time to tell them they are loved and appreciated.

Puppy Love Gala this weekend

Palm Valley Animal Society’s 11th Annual Puppy Love Gala will take place on February 29, starting at 6 p.m. at the Mission Events Center in Mission (200 N. Shary Rd.). The event will feature live and silent auctions with one-of-akind items, raffles, entertainment, a fully catered meal, and the first-ever Puppy Love After Party, all to support the organization’s lifesaving work in the Rio Grande Valley. In 2019 PVAS was one of the most-improved animal shelters in the entire country, saving almost 20,000 lives. The public is invited to join together as a community to celebrate the lives saved and the many hearts, hands and minds that helped to make this happen. The Puppy Love Gala is Palm Valley Animal Society’s largest fundraising

event of the year. Proceeds from the event support operations at the organization’s two facilities and directly help to save the lives of homeless animals in Hidalgo County More information about the event, tickets, and sponsorship opportunities can be found online at pvastx.org/puppylove. Call (956) 7204563 or email puppylove@ pvactx.org for more information on how you can help the animals. Palm Valley Animal Society is the shelter of record for Edinburg, Hidalgo, Hidalgo County, La Joya, McAllen, Palmhurst, and Palmview, serving approximately 750,000 residents and 30,000 animals each year. UVAL hosts Butterfly Art Walk The Upper Valley Art League (UVAL) will host its first annual UVAL Butterfly Art Walk on Saturday, February 29. The event invites participants to find as many of Mission’s sculptured butterflies as one can in a two-hour timeframe. Bring your camera or cell phone, enjoy a delicious breakfast – while supplies last – and take a two hour walk or ride around the City of Mission. Prizes will be awarded. Your camera, or cell phone, will be dated – so it must be what you have found within the two-hour time frame. Return to

UVAL with your photos, turn them in to the judges and find out if you are a winner. The event will be held on Saturday, February 29, from 9 to 11 a.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m. UVAL is asking for donations as an entry fee. UVAL is located at 921 E. 12th St. in Mission.
