Become a Winter Texan Ambassador

Winter Texans tell us every day they love coming to the Rio Grande Valley where they can get outdoors and have fun during the winter months without having to worry about snowstorms and frigid temperatures. You tell us you enjoy all the great entertainment, the friendly people and the low cost of living – especially when compared to other resort areas such as Florida and Arizona. And you enjoy coming back each year meeting up with all the good See AMBASSADOR pg. 6 INDEX “On the road with Jo” Parks Calendar Events Calendar WintertainersTM Taste of the Valley Business Guide Classifieds

Winter Texan share fashion at style show

The fashionistas of Winter Texans gathered in one place last week to enjoy fashion, food and camaraderie. A full house saw that bell bottoms never went out of style, that western wear can be casual, formal and anything in between and that bright colors and leopard print clothing are just as in style today as they ever were at the 23rd annual Summer Time Fun Style Show at Victoria Palms. Four local stores – Boot's 'n Jeans, Jewels by Jazz, Lionel's Western Wear and Wells of Weslaco each paraded their fashions, worn by other Winter Texans, up and down the runway in the banquet room at Victoria Palms. There were bellbottoms, fancy shawls, cowboy hats and See FASHION pg. 7

Borderfest features music, food, culture and fun

South Texas’ largest music, culture and heritage festival, kicks off this weekend at the Hidalgo Borderfest Fairgrounds, located next to the Payne Arena in Hidalgo. Borderfest, the three-day festival, held March 6-8, is packed with entertainment, food, vendors, and parades. Each year, Borderfest picks a theme, a country, a culture to embellish on. This year, the country of choice is Japan. The festival includes entertainment by Becky G, Kalimba, Ramon Ayala, Solido, Carolina Ross, Lupillo Rivera, Lunay, El Coyote, Dalex and Sech. There will also be a magic show, a mentalist/comedy hypnosis show, sea lion show and The Pirates of the Sky show. There will be parades, a carnival, petting zoo and much more. Since the theme for this year is Japan, there will be a Japanese cultural area for visitors to learn more about Japan. Anime See BORDERFEST pg. 4

Trophy Gardens winners at Alamo Parade

By Herb Moering Those staying at Trophy Gardens RV Resort celebrated Texas independence by sweeping all the trophies in the Winter Texan Division at the Alamo parade on Saturday, Feb. 29. In addition to garnering the top trophy overall in the 2020 Texas Independence Day parade by offering entries for the theme “Decades” from the 1920s to the 1990s, the Alamo resort’s “Happy Days Are Here to Stay” entry featuring costumed Ken and Linda Svenby and Glyn and Lynn Massingill took a 1st place. They were followed by “We All Live in a Yellow Submarine” with shipmates Beverly, Nathalie and Walter the dog for 2nd place. The Trophy Gardens’ award-winning line dancers claimed the 3rd place trophy. Prior to the trophy presentations by the parade sponsors, the Alamo Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center, the line dancers were asked for an encore performance on stage much to the delight of the audience gathered in City Park. In the youth division, the 1st place

trophy went to Sgt. Fernando De La Rosa Library entry with Pink Ladies and kids enjoying the rock ‘n roll theme. The commercial division was the Alamo Tae-Kwon-Do studio, featuring students showing off special moves. And among organizations, the “Friends of the Alamo Museum” took the 1st place trophy with a portrayal of Davy Crockett, who had a part in Texas gaining freedom, and Calamity Jane, another historic figure. Trophy Gardens also had a king and queen riding in a convertible. The king was Ron Sterler, who comes from Iowa and has been staying at the resort for 15 years. The selected queen was Bonnie Christian, originally from Iowa, who with her late husband, Gene, were the first managers at the resort back in 1984. Helping to make it all happen for Trophy Gardens was Richard Gambaiani and five other fellows, who worked right up into the night before the parade on entries. Gambaiani, watching at the end of the parade, said the resort residents “put a lot of See PARADE pg. 8

An evening with Del

Future generations will only have libraries, the Internet, or television to connect with music history, but Saxophonist Del Puschert lived it and will be featured in a special interview open to the public on March 7 at 7 p.m. at Paradise Park, 100 E. Hackberry Ave. in McAllen. There is no admission for the event. Del has played with musicians like Chuck Berry, Charlie Daniels, Lynn Anderson, Elvis Presley and many others. Del first met Elvis in the mid-50's when Elvis was just getting started and will be

sharing stories about many "behind the scenes" moments. Since 1996, Del and his wife Harriet, have made the Rio Grande Valley their home during the Winter Texan season. Musicians from across the U.S. and Canada spend their time playing music at some of the area jams where Del has always been a favorite. Refreshments during intermission will be available for sale. Del will not be playing his saxophone. Paradise Park welcomes you to "An Evening with Del". We hope to see you there

AMBASSADOR From pg. 1

friends you have made in your park or resort in South Texas. So, what could make your winter here even better next year? Having your friends from up north come down and share the good times together. Become a Winter Texan Ambassador by taking some copies of our March 11 Take Home Edition of the Winter Texan Times with you to share with your friends and neighbors back home. Yes, you can choose which neighbors you invite to come down – just in case you have one of those pesky neighbors that you’d rather leave behind. So, what does a Winter Texan Ambassador do? In a word, brag. We’re pretty good about bragging about Texas, and I’m sure you’ll find lots to brag about and maybe make the folks back home wish they were here too. Tell your friends about the dances in your park, the jam sessions, craft sales, pancake breakfasts, ice cream socials and the Wintertainers™ performing daily in the resorts. If you like country music, there’s plenty of that here in Texas, including some really good country-western bands and even jam sessions for you musicians. If their preference is rock-nroll or bluegrass, tell ‘em they’ll not be disappointed. There are lots of talented performers who come to the Rio Grande Valley from Branson, Nashville and other areas to perform here during the winter season. Tell ‘em about the very affordable cost of living in the Rio Grande Valley! Everything costs less in the Rio Grande Valley – especially the local citrus and produce. Housing is much less expensive too – especially compared to the Florida retirement communities. It’s a great place to make their retirement dollars stretch further, enabling them to enjoy a great lifestyle with their friends in Deep South Texas.

Tell your friends and family it’s SAFE here. The Rio Grande Valley has some of the lowest crime rates in the country. And with all the increased law enforcement man power now patrolling the entire Valley, it’s safer than ever. Give us a call at (956) 580-7800 to reserve some extra copies of our March 11 Take Home Edition and take some home with you when you leave the Valley. Most people take 10, 20 or 30 extra copies of the Take Home Edition to share. We hope you will do the same and invite your friends to come down with you next winter and give us a try. If you only need a few copies, pick up a few extras at your park/resort when we deliver the edition on March 11. If you want 10 or more copies, call us and we’ll deliver a separate bundle to the park with your name on it. If you are leaving before March 11, take some extra copies of our earlier editions, including today’s paper, to share with the folks back home. If you live near a popular RVer’s vacation spot up north, you could take some copies of the paper to some of the resorts in your home state so the folks visiting there in the summer months can come spend their winters with us in Texas. We’ll also be posting the Take Home Edition our website at www.wintertexantimes.com and on our Facebook page, so you can share this special edition through email and Facebook as well. Call us right now, even if it’s after business hours; you can always leave a message. Or you can email us at ads@ wintertexantimes.com. If possible, we’ll need your paper requests by Friday, March 6 so we can print enough papers for everyone. Don’t’ leave the Valley without at least a handful of extra copies of the Winter Texan Times to share. Our number is (956) 580-7800.

FASHION

From pg. 1 runway models were wearing, from sophisticated to creative and everything in between. Leah Wells, of Wells of Weslaco, said that the show provided an opportunity for family-owned enterprises to not only show what they have available but also what they offer for each Winter Texan and other customers. “We offer personal service, something you don't find in chain stores,” Wells said. “We have unique and different styles. We buy with Winter Texans in mind, for their lifestyle needs.” Wells of Weslaco has been a downtown staple since 1933 and Chuck and Leah Wells are third-generation owners. “We keep up with today's styles and carry unique fashion that are what shoppers are looking for. We carry swimwear, resort wear, accessories and inspirational gifts.” To make sure the men had a part in the show, Martin Masso of Boots 'n Jeans, dressed up Rex Kirchhoff, John McCutchbelt, and plenty of boots with bling during the two-hour event that was catered by eon and David Powers in a variety of cowboy hats, from denim Victoria Palms Catering. Each of the four fashion stores de- to leather to straw, dress shirt, scribed each piece that their five or six snap up shirts and jeans, belts

and some shiny, eye catching belt buckles, among other accessories. “We have everything a family needs when it comes to Western Wear,” Masso said. “We carry all the name brands and we work with the customer to find the right look at fit for what they want. We're there to serve people and make them look great.” Lionel's Western Wear and Boutique opened up some eyes with a pair of big, multi-colored crazy pants, some designer bell bottoms and some “super shiny boots.” Sandy Pena of Lionel's affirmed that bell bottoms were in fashion, that crazy pants weren't exactly crazy and that there are a variety of looks that Winter Texans can check out, especially in the local stores. Jewels With Jazz showed off some – you

guessed it – jazzy jewels, a folded up hat that's easy to take wherever one goes and plenty of bold colors. From the professional night life look to casual to all out wild and crazy, the runway models, emcees and those in attendance were given some up close options with the local fashion underground world, with a wide range of clothing and accessories for the next time they have an event to attend, or just want to relax at home.

That might be one reason, coming from a rural town, that he likes to support smaller towns. “I enjoy small towns where there are friendly people.” Winter Ranch RV Resort’s entry focused on the activities that are available. Jeanne Jentzen, who lives in Iowa and Janette Witt, from Nebraska, carried pickleball rackets for a relatively new sport that has become popular in the Valley. Jentzen has been at the resort in Alamo for five years and was attracted to it by the people, the beauty, the pool and miniature car racetracks. Witt, in her first year at the resort, noted meeting lots of people in the park. She golfs just about every day on the resort’s 9-hole par three course. “I like pickleball too and walking,” she said. “I just like being outside.” Spectators on the parade route, Bill

Rick McEwen is taking it easy entertaining everywhere he goes. Whether he is singing, strumming his guitar, cracking jokes, or just telling some stories from his childhood, he is sure to entertain the crowd. Rick is genuine in all he does, has fun with his work, and enjoys making people happy. Rick is most known for his Kenny Rogers music – since people say he kind of looks like him. He also sings other artists like Elvis – which he thinks he looks like … if Elvis had lived a little longer. Some of the other artist he performs are Waylon Jennings, George Jones and even Loretta Lynn. Oh, and when he needs to put that twang in his voice for certain songs, he can do that too. Rick goes into his shows with a bit of preparation, but, he said, “I take requests.” He said he knows almost everything people ask him to do and his shows tend to take longer, because he will sing until everyone is done. He can get on any stage and after a bit of humming and warming up his guitar and fingers, he is ready to go. “I have lots of fun at dances,” said Rick, but he really enjoys being able to work with the crowd on requests – playing what they want to hear.

pg. 4 and Jean Snyder and their friends Joe and Sandy Boell, also stay at Winter Ranch. The Snyders have been there for nine years, with the Boells joining them two years ago. Sandy Boell said they expect to remain at the resort, having recently purchased a park model home. She said, “we enjoy the beautiful weather.” That was similar to Jean Snyder’s comment about liking the weather. She added, “It’s friends too and Alamo is so central to everything.” Alamo Mayor Diana Martinez took a moment during the concluding ceremonies to thank the Winter Texans for all they contribute to the community and the Chamber of Commerce officials, such as the organization’s president, Gloria Espinosa, for coordinating the parade that observes Texas declaring independence from Mexico on March 2, 1836. The parade in Alamo has been a long tradition, going back more than 30 years.

Red Hatters Valley-wide gather at Festival of Tables

By Kathy Olivarez The annual Festival of Tables held at Trophy Gardens in Alamo was a huge success as members of Red Hat Society groups from Winter Texan parks and local groups joined together to see the table décor and visit with old friends or meet new friends. This is the one event held annually that brings Red Hatters Valley-wide together. Once the hostesses had decorated their tables, the rest of the ladies were allowed to make a line and move through the 30 different table settings on display. The tables had different themes and styles. The ladies expressed their excitement as they found settings that were particularly pleasing to them. Holiday themes were important with Christmas being the most popular. Joanne Miller and Jo Anna Kurtenbach called their table “Christmas” while Jane Garza and Ethel Gonzalez presented “Christmas Elegance.” Also using “Christmas” as their theme were Mary Shafer and Diane Hardy. “Can’t Wait for Christmas” was created by Kathy Tonn Terriar and Sara Smith. Mary Virginia Gerlach presented “Winter Wonderland,” and Sharon Newcomer used “Angels,” both related to Christmas. Easter was popular with “Easter” by Verle Johnson and Audrey Konold. A

Activity Directors treated to a show and lunch Activity directors were treated to a show and lunch on Monday to show how much they are appreciated for all the work they do for the Rio Grande Valley RV and MH parks. Us here at the Winter Texan Times know that without them, we wouldn’t have much of a paper. We are all so very thankful for what you do for the community. Mission Bell hosted the event where they served lunch and activity directors were entertained by Leslie Blasing, Helen Russell and Company, Rick McEwen and Brenda Coin and Sheila and Denny. There were several vendors on hand as well, including Go With Jo, Sky Med, Beach Park and Ron Hoover and Pickpocket Gene. Leslie Blasing, as always, kept the crowd entertained with her beautiful voice. Helen Russell and Company entertained the crowd with some of their props, banjo playing and good music. Rick McEwen did some Kenny Rogers and brought the crowd to laughter as well with his jokes. Brenda Coin joined Rick on stage for a few songs with her lovely voice – she plans to visit again next year and possibly do some shows with Rick and Leslie. Sheila and Denny presented some Dolly Parton music with Sheila’s voice and Denny’s deep bass that you

could feel in your bones. Their last show this season is today at VIP-La Feria. All the wintertainers did a great job keeping the activity directors entertained with their lively music and bantering. In between the entertainment, vendors were able to draw numbers for door prizes that were provided by the vendor. Winter Texan Times had three winners that were able to take home some promotional items, gift cards, and other items. At the end of the event, those in attendance were finally able to touch the boxes that had been at their tables the entire time – they were strongly forbidden to touch the boxes when they checked into the event. Inside the box were some tokens of appreciation including candy and a scratch off. When getting to the scratch off, attendees were instructed to scratch theirs all at the same time. Several people won a couple bucks from theirs. Again, we here at the Winter Texan Times want to express our thanks to the activity directors throughout the Rio Grande Valley. We are so thankful for all your hard work to bring people to your parks and to keep them engaged – to keep them coming back. We depend on you a lot and look forward to every opportunity we have to get out there and enjoy some of your activities.

ON THE ROAD with Jo Liston

Turn negatives into positives And what did you give up for Lent? Perhaps it would be better if instead of giving up something, we added something to our lives. How about deciding to turn negatives into positives? That's a little difficult to do sometimes and we may have to constantly remind ourselves to look for the positive instead of always giving in to a negative. Some of the old sayings might help us to remember to think positive. The old saying "When life gives you a lemon, make lemonade'' or “I cried because I had no shoes until I saw a man who had no feet" might be of help. We can always find a positive side if we look hard enough. We need to be careful though with how we try to tum some things into a positive. Sometimes it is all too easy to find someone a little worse off than we are just so we can feel above them. People do this all the time; countries also are not immune... and that includes our own country. Maybe that is why some countries consider Americans as rude or arrogant.

Finding someone worse off than we are just so we can feel better about ourselves is not just a human trait, it is also found in animals. A friend told me once that she had to keep one of her chickens separated from the others because the entire flock would always beat upon that one hen by pecking on her. A sociology professor at the University of Texas called it “the pecking order.” We all want to better ourselves. We want our children to be better educated, to earn more money, to have a nicer house. But let us look inward for a minute. If we have bettered ourselves because we have put somebody else down, is that really what we want to do? Would our energy not be better spent if we tried to pull somebody up instead of putting them down? Do we really want to be like that flock of chickens and join their "pecking order"? Could we adopt and practice "the upward order" instead of "the pecking order"? We have many people in the Rio Grande Valley who already have adopted

“the upward order". They think positive and daily turn negatives into positives. You read a lot about Sister Pimentel and the good work that she does in the Upper Valley. Not so much in the news is a quiet, efficient nun in the San Benito/Harlingen area who works at Posada Providencia. Many homeless people - often those immigrants who are awaiting clearance to join their families - are taken to Posada Providencia as they have nowhere to go. Sometimes they speak no English or do not have good, marketable skills. Sister Zita strives diligently to see that they learn English and a marketable skill so that they can earn a living and support themselves. Another person who gives so much of his time to helping less fortunate is Bill Reagan, who manages Loaves and Fishes in Harlingen. This entity also helps the homeless with meals and job placement sometimes housing families until they can get back on their feet. A newcomer on the scene is Jodi Goodman, a lawyer, who volunteers time to help immigrants with their petitions to cross legally into the United States. Surely these people could use more support with “the upward order". If they can turn negatives into positives, why can't we? Let' s give it a try! If you want to learn more about Posada Provendicia, visit their website at https:// cdpsisters.org/la-posada-providencia. You can also find information on Loaves and Fishes on their website at

Whenever I walk into the Victoria Palms restaurant in Donna, I feel so at home —it’s like Cheers where everybody knows my name. Once again, as I walked in, I was greeted by staff, cooks, chefs...I felt like royalty. But it’s not a celebration of me. This is how everyone always is here. Even better, from breakfast to dinner, the restaurant served up food that’s always special, and tasty. Today was no different as Chef Marcus Arevalo saw me walk in and immediately greeted me and asked what I would like. I’ve tried most of the food items here, but really was in the mood for a steak and baked potato (loaded of course). Once again, I wasn’t disappointed. Not long after putting the order in while sipping my water (trying to cut back on the sodas), a delicious plate with a New York Strip (medium-medium rare), potato and a colorful medley of squash, zucchini and cherry tomatoes was placed in front of me by Karen, who always asks how the writing is going and how I am. Genuine care. The steak simply prepared with salt and pepper was cooked to perfection. The pepper didn’t overwhelm the steak but enhanced the amazing piece of meat. The cherry tomatoes in the vegetable medley added a little zest to the squash and zucchini and really put some flavor to it. And the baked potato - cheese, bacon and sour cream - need I say more. It’s 25 miles to my home from here and the goal is to not only stay awake but also not to eat the amazing looking Cobb salad I ordered for my daughter. Once again you can see the care that goes into what the kitchen creates. Rows of ham, chicken and cheese were spread across a bed of a variety of greens and two boiled eggs balanced out this salad. Raspberry vinaigrette topped it off. Maybe if I just took little one bite...just then, as if she could read my mind, Karen came up to me and saved me (from an angry 15-year-old girl if it ever got back to her that I snacked on her mega salad)..she asked if I might want to take that salad home. They are just so good here - from food to service - Cheers actually has nothing on them.

Desert Polynesia – new to the valley

Desert Polynesia, new to the Valley, performed recently at the Valley Star Awards. While there were only two people performing with the group for this show, in the future, they will probably have more participants. The group plans to return next year and perform at one of the Showcase events. Desert Polynesia provides authentic Polynesian music and dance for all audiences. Through their shows, you can experience true, traditional island sound, award-winning professional mea hula halau dances, lei greeters, Tahitian drums, and even the captivating Samoan Fire Knife Dance or Fire Poi Twirler.

The group has over 20 years of experience of telling a story with their dances, songs, and drum beating. In 2013, they became the official performers for Sea World Aquatica San Antonio’s Island Nights. They have performed throughout the United States, including California, Washington, Tennessee, Louisiana, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Georgia, Nevada, New Mexico, and Hawaii. They have even performed in Guam and Samoa. They are currently based in San Antonio where group members offer classes and workshops. In April, they will be taking part in the annual Alamo Aloha Fest held in San Antonio. If you want to learn more about them, visit their website at https:// desertpolynesia.net/.

Traveling Wall coming to Mission

U.S. military service veterans and active members of the U.S. armed forces travel great distances and make great sacrifices to preserve and protect freedom and liberty. Now there is an ideal way to honor their contribution. The American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) will visit Mission, Texas March 12-15, with the Vietnam Traveling Wall. The wall will be displayed outside the Mission Event Center, 200 N. Shary Road. The mission of the project is to travel the nation to honor, respect, and remember men and women who served, and to pay specific tribute to those who gave all in that service. Since the tribute is mobile, it allows people to honor and respect veterans and active military personnel without having to travel great distances to do so. The AVTT Vietnam Traveling Wall is an 80 percent scale version of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. Across its 360-foot length, the wall contains every single name etched on the

Ragin’ for Cajun in Harlingen

Cajun food lovers can feast on allyou-can-eat crawfish and craft beers at the 2020 Ales and Tails Fest on Saturday, March 7 from 3 to 8 p.m. at Victor Park in Harlingen. In addition to the spicy tails and ice-old ales, guests can move to the live sounds of local bands Hot Rodz, Rock Star and Southern Ashes. The Harlingen Chamber of Commerce began the crawfish boil in 2017 as a way to bring the taste of the Louisiana bayou to the Rio Grande Valley. According to Executive Director Chris Gonzales, the festival grows more popular each year. "Most Valley restaurants don't serve crawfish or Cajun food, so the food is definitely

a big reason people come out," Gonzales said, "but there is also so much great music and dancing. It's a great time for everyone." Tickets for the 2020 Ales and Tails Fest cost $30 in advance and $40 at the park. A reserved table for eight people costs $500. To purchase tickets, call the Harlingen Chamber at (956) 423-5440 or stop by at 311 E. Tyler Ave. A portion of the proceeds raised will benefit Harlingen Bark Park. Victor Park is located at 1601 S. M. St., at the intersection of Expressway 83 and M Street.
