Winter Texans receive red carpet treatment in the RGV

Hollywood has nothing on red carpet events compared to what Winter Texans receive as they return to the Valley with open arms awaiting them. Special dances, potlucks and Winter Texan welcome back parties are just some of the things that await the part-time residents, who mean so much to the Valley, it's economy and everything from tourism to volunteering. While they are here for just a portion of the year, they have built relationships inside and outside of their parks and all throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Kim Poyer, park manager for Llano Grande Lake Park Resort, said the park throws a huge welcome back party at the Hynes Event Center after most of the residents in the nearly 3,000-population park have returned.

The month of March is well upon us and with that comes Spring Break and the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show. The RGVLS is a place where 4-H, FFA students and others have a chance to earn prizes, money and scholarships by showSee RGVLS pg. 32

Guided tram tour explores urban oasis

By Herb Moering An easy way to view attractions at Estero Llano Grande State Park is to climb aboard a tram and enjoy a two-hour trip narrated by a park interpreter. For the March 4 tram trip, eight Winter Texans from Siesta Retirement Village, just down the road from the state park, learned a lot from volunteer guides Tom and Connie Unsicker. They noted that the 280-acre Estero Llano Grande on Weslaco’s south side, is among the youngest and smallest by state park standards. But the park features some of the most diverse habitat in the Valley with its different vegetation areas, animal and bird life. The former farmland reflects a major example of habitat restoration that was pieced together in the early 2000s from See TRAM pg. 10

Volunteer interpreter Tom Unsicker talked about the huge banyan tree under which the tram was parked.

Bentsen Palm RV Park recently took on a project to help a pet shelter with something they really needed. The park got involved with Cinderella Pet Rescue about four years ago when they learned about the no-kill pet shelter. They learned about the shelter when trying to find somewhere to take stray dogs to – they had a number of stray dogs at the park that needed homes. Marcie Swenson, activity director at the park, said residents were hooked in helping the shelter and fulfilling the needs of the shelter whenever they could. Through the years, the park has donated time, food and other supplies to the shelter. But there was a new need the

shelter expressed recently that the park decided to try and fill. The shelter was in need of some dog houses. Specifically, the shelter asked for two small dog houses and two large dog houses. Swenson said they made dog houses fit for a king. Through monetary donations, supplies and labor, the park was able to provide the shelter with what was asked – four dog houses. The dog houses are practically small little houses with ventilation, shingles on the roof and more. “Everyone came out and helped,” said

A new and greatly expanded festival celebrating Texas’ independence is scheduled for March 13-14 at the San Benito Fairgrounds. The event will be highlighted by a heart-rending Battle of the Alamo reenactment, Grammy-award entertainers performing under the stars, dancing horses, market days, a veterans’ reception, history symposiums and Aztec Indian dancers. Admission is free. There is a charge of $5 parking per vehicle. Festival organizers invite the public

to attend the two full days of entertainment, history and family fun at TexasFest, highlighted by battle reenactments that won Texas its freedom from Mexico in 18351836, thus creating the Republic of Texas. T h e Battle of Gonzales, the first battle between Te j a n o s / Texians against the Mexican forces made famous for the slogan, “Come and Take It.” Two other battle reenactments are

Tucked quietly away from the main streets and heavy traffic in a quiet setting featuring wide, tree-lined streets and large concrete pads to accommodate your mobile home or RV, you will find there is a lot to discover at Ranchero Village. Resident Pat Yossi enjoys the wide streets and separate RV section of the park noting, “It is easy to maneuver and get around.” She also enjoys the layout and appearance of the park and all the opportunities to participate in activities. Ranchero Village has been busy refreshing the park with new amenities, new activities, and new homes. This immaculately maintained and landscaped park offers a host of facilities, amenities, and activities designed to make your homeaway-from-home enjoyable and comfortable. 11-year resident Linda Jones first arrived in an RV and says, “Driving an RV we noticed how wide the streets are and how big the RV lots are.” She also notes how friendly everyone is in the community and is sure to add “I love the heated pool.” In addition to the large swimming pool and oversized spa, 24 shuffleboard courts, and its spacious wood carving room, the park now features the Valley’s newest R/C race course, and fully equipped stained glass and ceramics studios. This is an active community with a full and diverse schedule of activities that residents enjoy, including dances, jam sessions, bingo, billiards, horseshoes, arts & crafts, dinners, tours, a variety of card games and Ladies Day Out (while the men enjoy a day at the golf course), and some very good live entertainment. If that were not enough, Ranchero Village also boasts a 14,000 square foot

air-conditioned recreation hall, a 7,000 square foot dance floor, well stocked library, exercise room, billiards, crafts, cards, and free cable TV and internet. Resident Ed Funk sold his home in another park and came to Ranchero Village because, “It is a really good park. There are so many things that they offer here. It is like a partnership, living here, between the residents and the owners – not like living in a corporate-owned park.” Of course, the residents love to eat. From fresh cinnamon rolls to biscuits and gravy or pancakes, breakfasts are held several days a week, and they often have hamburger cookouts or pot luck dinners for all to enjoy. Resident Mike Funderburgh says simply, “Come on over. It’s the best park in the Valley!” Ranchero Village is centrally located

in the mid-Valley and is only 15 minutes from the outlet mall in Mercedes for some great shopping. It is 20 minutes to Harlingen and 25 minutes to McAllen for still more shopping and dining possibilities. For medical emergencies, Knapp Medical Center is only five minutes away and Harlingen and McAllen are the epicenters for a wide array of medical specialists and several hospitals. There are a limited number of lots and mobile homes available, so don’t miss out on all the fun! Call Ranchero Village at 956-968-6223 to make a reservation. “We do a welcome back party with music, adult beverages, something to eat all at our Hynes Event Center,” Poyer said. “But we do so much here, that's just at the beginning. We also have twice a month a new resident orientation which includes touring the park, presentations, a packet with all the different events and groups – there are a million things going on here all the time. Residents never have to leave if they don't want.” But the welcome back party doesn't end at the beginning of the year across the Valley, it goes the entire season, pretty much up until they are ready to head back to their northern homes. Linda Miller, activities park director at Alamo Rec and the RGV Parks, said that the Winter Texans return is a season-long celebration, especially since they return sporadically throughout the season. She said several different events are coordinated to celebrate their return. “We'll have different potlucks and dances and they'll have all sorts of events for their groups and their friends,” Miller said. “We'll have all sorts of things going on to celebrate them, like recognizing our veterans.” Poyer has also noticed that not only has there been an increase in the Winter Texan population, confirmed by the annual Winter Texan Survey Report, but she said that the residents are staying lon-

ger, specifically mentioning the Canadian visitors who will use up as much of the time they are allotted to stay in the Valley before having to return home across the northern border. “They're coming a little earlier in December and even coming in November, Poyer said. “We have about 250-300 residents who stay all year and we have so many activities in the offseason that some

people want to come back sooner. That's great for them, for us and for our economy.” According to the survey, published by the UTRGV Robert C. Vackar College of Business and Entrepreneurship Business and Tourism Research Center, there was not only an increase in first-time Winter Texans but also an increase in the number of days staying in the Valley at 133. In 2006, Winter Texans stayed for about 122 days. There had been a decreasing trend from 2006-2018 of firstyear Winter Texans, dropping from 6.3 % in 2006 to 3% in 2016. However, in 2018 that trend took a steep climb, rising to 5.4% of the Winter Texans being first timers. There are several reasons for that trend to expect to continue as well. Responses to the survey collected answers to what Winter Texans enjoyed the most about the Valley. Climate, cost of living, friend-

ly people and social activities were the top four. CLIMATE This year, Winter Texans may have forgotten what Winter is supposed to look like. Gerry Le Croix and his wife Teresa visited some friends during the New Year's holiday from Ontario staying at Fun n Sun RV Park. On New Year's Day they, along with other friends – and soon to be friends – enjoyed a 70-degree high on South Padre Island for the annual Polar Bear dip, which the city promotes as the warmest Polar Bear dip in the country. Sixty-degree water temperatures did not face the hundreds of Island visitors that day ready to take the plunge. As the mixture of residents and Winter Texans came out of the water, one could tell who was who based on their reactions alone.

“It was cool, but not like what we'd face back north,” Le Croix said. “We'd more than likely break the ice to get into the water in some places, if we're not stuck at home shoveling snow.” Pools at RV Parks across the Valley not only remained opened, but at places like Victoria Palms in Donna or Alamo Country Club, there were people almost always ready for a quick game of water volleyball. COST OF LIVING Compared to Florida or Arizona, the

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

cost of living in South Texas is a major attraction – for businesses, for people looking to move elsewhere and for Winter Texans alike. “The Winter Texans spend a lot of money in the Valley,” Poyer said. “But there is also a lot of things to do that don't cost as much or doesn't cost at all. Plus, really you never even have to leave the park if you don't want to because everything is here and there's so much to do.” Of course, along with the low cost of living is the low cost of visiting Mexico, especially Nuevo Progreso. “People go to Progreso all the time for their medication, to go shopping and to go eat and drink,” Alamo Rec's Miller said. “Some people still think it's dangerous, but I go a lot in the summer when I can, and the Winter Texans go over there all the time. There are so

many things they can buy over there that are cheaper than getting it here, and you can go and have a fun time. “That's the thing, if they want to do something, there's so much to do outside the park. And since the cost of living is much lower here, they can go and spend that money elsewhere – like Mission or Harlingen or the Island. There's just a lot to do.”

FRIENDLY PEOPLE While this one's a little hard to measure statistically, it still came up as the third most popular reason that the Winter Texan returns, and it probably holds a direct correlation to the number of Winter Texans who knew each other before they came to the Valley to live. “Word of mouth and Facebook is really huge for us and for the Valley to get the word around,” Poyer said. “People will share all the fun they are having, and their friends and family will see it or hear about it and they will come visit.” Llano Grande also held a “stay for free” promotion where visitors looking to move away from the depressing winSee RED CARPET pg. 34

the two sable trees in the park, which can grow to a height of 80 feet. One species of palm trees is also present, which has leaves that fold inward and do not have jagged edges. The dense brush at the site is like the Tamaulipas thorn forest found on both sides of the border 200 years ago, according to Tom. Several types of cactus, but especially the prickly pear variety serve as a food source for many animals, starting with the pack rats, who eat from the top down. Javelina and cattle concentrate on the middle portion, with possums, raccoons and rabbits eating around the base. The velvet cactus is home for a cochineal beetle, whose larvae when crushed yields a brilliant red dye, once a very valuable comm o d i t y. His wife noted that a large T e x a s tortoise can sometimes be seen ambling along the trail. A delta area was toured atop a levee, which protected the park in that 2010 flood. Then there was what Tom called the tropic area, which has plants and trees from all over the world that had been encouraged by the former landowner. The tram was later parked beneath one of two huge banyan trees in the park. Surprisingly, there are six totem poles in the RV area, which are being kept because woodpeckers have made holes for themselves and other nesting creatures. Of great interest was Alligator Lake, where two young gators, approximately

three years of age were seen basking on the shore under cloudy skies, along with a diamond back water snake. Gators grow a foot a year until reaching maturity. While not seen, the lake is also home to a 12foot long male gator and a 10-foot female, plus a number of 4 and 5 footers. At a butterfly feeding station, the visitors were told a combination of banana, brown sugar and beer placed on logs or branches will attract the fliers. That is in addition to the plants butterflies like. Connie called the park, “an oasis in an urban area.” She said, all fifth graders in the Donna and Mercedes school districts had visited the park this last year. Those interested in taking a tram tour can call and make a reservation at (956) 5653919. The tours take place at 2 p.m. on We d n e s days and Sundays. But, it’s possible to arrange a tour at other times for a group of six or more in number. The tram also makes it possible for handicapped individuals to see the park. Other park activities include birds walks at 8:30 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays, plant walk at 1:30 p.m. Thursdays and butterfly walk at 1:30 p.m. Fridays. There’s also a birding basics offering at 1:30 p.m. Saturdays. To learn about other activities like a night hike on March 21 or outdoor cooking with a ranger on March 14, call the park office. A big draw to Deep South Texas is the nature sites and its many birds and butterflies. South Texas is home to numerous species of birds and butterflies that aren’t found anywhere else. South Texas also exists on a huge migratory corridor that attracts visitors from all over the world. Because of this, there are nature parks throughout the Rio Grande Valley and there are different types of festivals held throughout the year to celebrate the nature, birds and butterflies that call the RGV home, even if temporarily. There is group of nature parks that are organized under the World Birding Center. Parks under that umbrella are Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley in Mission, Edinburg Scenic Wetlands, Estero Llano Grande in Weslaco, Harlingen Arroyo Colorado, the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse, Quinta Mazatlan in McAllen, Resaca del la Palma in Brownsville, Roma Bluffs, and South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center. Information about all the parks can be found at www.theworldbirdingcenter.org. Other parks include nature centers in McAllen and Mission and Laguna Atascosa. There are also wildlife refuges like Santa Ana and Laguna Atascosa. The Valley even has a butterfly park, the National Butterfly Center, in Mission. Although, not mentioned in detail in this, the RGV also has Battlefield landmarks

that have been made into parks with walking trails and gardens, and other historical sites that have been beautified to attract the abundant wildlife in the area. You can find out more about some of these sites, and others, in our Rio Grande Valley Visitors Guide that can be found in our digital editions on our website – www.wintertexantimes. com. These are just a few of the dedicated nature sites that can be found across the RGV. For now, we will highlight the World Birding Center parks. Each site of the World Birding Center has its own attractions for both the first-time visitor and expert birder. More than 500 bird species make these parks, and area, a not-to-be missed nature destination. The nine sites are located along 120 miles of river road from South Padre Island to Roma. Habitats range from dry chaparral brush and verdant riverside thickets to freshwater marshes and coastal wetlands. Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park has a visitor’s center that is surrounded by butterfly gardens and hummingbird

feeders. Visitors can take a transportation shuttle, ride bikes or walk through the park. A two-story observation tower gives visitors a bird’s-eye view of the canopy as well as a peek into Mexico. Two enclosed bird blinds, a birding wall and several water features allow visitors to see birds up close and watch their behaviors. Ten bird feeding stations are stocked from November through March and over seven miles of trails offer a variety of opportunities to encounter wildlife inside the park. Green Jays and plain Chachalacas congregate regularly at the bird feeding stations. Other birds to look for include the Gray Hawk, White-tipped Dove, Groove-billed Ani, Ringed Kingfisher, Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet, Clay-colored Thrush, Long-billed Thrasher and Altamira Oriole. Popular during the spring and fall are virtual clouds of migrating Broad-winged and Swainson’s Hawks. The park also offers meeting rooms, primitive tent camping sites,

bike and binocular rentals and guided nature tours. As with all of the World Birding Center Sites, yearly programs and a full calendar can be found on their website. The Edinburg Scenic Wetlands offers 40 acres of park with winding paths and waterside observation platforms. Educational exhibits, computer programs, telescopes and interpretive audio stations allow for close-up inspection of its various inhabitants. While floor-to-ceiling windows ensure watchable wildlife in every season. Birds to watch for include waterfowl and shorebirds like the Green Kingfisher, Least Grebe and American Avocet that can be viewed from platforms overlooking peaceful freshwater lagoons. At least 13 species of ducks flock to the park in the winter months. The park offers walking trails, nature tours, backyard habitat tours and classes. Harlingen Arroyo Colorado consists of Texas Ebony woodlands and Harlingen Thicket – over 90 acres of trees, shrubs and flowering plants that support a variety of wildlife and a refuge for birds and other creatures. While being close to major highways and an airport, the area remains a quiet wooded retreat from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Work is currently underway on a visitors’ center that will include a gift shop, observation tower, meeting rooms and enclosed viewing areas. Currently there are extensive trails where visitors can find birds such as the Green and Ringed Kingfisher, Common

Pauraque, Groove-billed Ani, Long-billed Thrasher and Olive Sparrow. Endangered Redcrowned Parrots are also found at the park. The Old Hidalgo Pumphouse serves as a museum retelling the Magic Valley’s early 29th century transition into an agricultural powerhouse, but also embraces nature conservation with planned hummingbird gardens, a bike trail and more. The land consists of native trees, shrubs and flowers including Huisache, Texas Ebony, Anacua and Mesquite. Tropical Kingfishers, Great Kiskadees, Green Jays, Clay-colored Robin, Altamira Oriole and others can be found here. In the winter, colorful warblers, kinglets and gnatcatchers can be found. Visitors on the bike trial have seen Brown and White Pelicans, Cormorant Ducks, Grey Hawks, Turkey Vultures, American Coots and other waterfowl. rounded by lush tropical landscaping and native woodland. An urban oasis with quiet trails that wind through 15 acres of birding habitat, is close to airports and hotels. The wild Tamaulipan thorn forest has been enhanced with water and bird feeding stations to attract more wildlife. Many Valley specialties such as the Plain Chachalacas, Common Pauraques, Clay-colored Thrushes, Green Jays, Buff-bellied Hummingbirds and Olive Sparrows can be seen regularly along with occasional tropical migrants. The park also features regular talks, classes, tours, gardens, an amphitheater, bronze sculptures, and more. Resaca de la Palma boasts the largest tract of native habitat in the World Birding Center network. Its 1,200 semi-tropical acres provide a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of an international urban center only a few miles away. The park is home to abandoned coils of riverbed, known locally as resacas. These resacas create wildlife attracting ponds when full. Along the natural levees of See NATURE pg. 18

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

From the Cheap Seats A leaner is worth two points – just not in Texas

I remember my dad and my neighbor, ,Jim Brewer, used to go out back with esome wooden stakes, drive one into the ground and then spend the next 15 minutes arguing over how far to place the other stake. My dad was 6-foot-4 and Mr. Brew,er, as I would call him, was probably .5-foot-9. They would mark off the stakes 13 strides apart. My dad, being tall and strong, would make sure his 13 strides were stretched out and Mr. Brewer, well, he didn't particularly care for that strategic move. V Officially, horseshoe pegs are 40 feet napart and are set at a 12- to 15-degree andgle forward or straight up. I hadn't thought anything about horseshoes until recently when Dan Cornwell of Tropic Star RV Park sent about 50 .photos from the “Horseshoe Olympics.” Talking with some of the competitors o y e

MARCH 11, 2020 23

www.wintertexantimes.com

brought back memories. For me, getting a leaner – where the shoe actually leans against the stake, was almost more exciting than getting a ringer itself. Texas, however, doesn't recognize leaners, and neither does the Horseshoe Olympics. Other than that, it was a little eye opening to hear that the Tropic Star RV Resort in Pharr is home to 10 horseshoe pits and a horseshoe/Rio Grande Valley legend. Tony Comstock is that legend. A state champion horseshoe competitor – also known as a “pitcher,” it's only fitting that the octogenarian resides at Tropic Star RV Park, which happens to be the home of the horseshoe competition for the McAllen Parks & Recreation's annual Golden Olympics. “He's a former state champion in Illinois,” said Gene Sparks, the Tropic Star horseshoe club coordinator. “He's kind of

a horseshoe legend here and has a reputation across the Valley. He's over 80 and throws pretty consistent. He won a gold medal in his division too.” Sparks, from Merriam, Kansas, began pitching about two to three years after starting his annual trek to the Valley. He said he didn't know anything about the Valley until some of the “guys I worked with retired and came down and then we started coming,” he said. Tropic Star has 10 pits and several of the area's top competitors when it comes to horseshoes. Sparks said several competitors go out to the pits almost daily to throw. He said the key to competing is to be consistent with as few “peaks and valleys,” as possible. “A lot of people get on high streaks or low streaks,” said Sparks, adding that when he goes back home to Kansas

he doesn't throw over the summer, but it doesn't take him long now to get his groove back. “Consistency is the key.” He also advised those who may be interested in taking up the sport that the standard throw is to toss the shoe in a way that the pitcher gets the shoe to have a turn and a half from time it's released to when it gets to the peg, “It opens the horseshoe to the peg so it can go around it.” With no leaners in Texas, it leaves the competitors two ways to score – a ringer, which is worth three points and be the closest to the pin (within four inches, or the approximate distance between the shoe's two tips.) A leaner is worth two points – just not in Texas. I wonder what my dad and Mr. Brewer would think of that... once they decided on how far the stakes should be apart.

While it may be a little farther than most restaurants, the Baffin Bay Seafood Company, located in Rivera, is certainly worth the effort to get there. The restaurant sits right on (956) 425-6281 • 4201 W. Bus 83 Harlingen, TX 78552 the coast of Baffin Bay, a well-known fishing spot for black (956) 884-7715 • 500 N Jackson Rd N-3, Pharr, TX 78577 drum, redfish and speckled trout. It can also be a good spot for birders as roseate spoonbills can often be spotted in the area during their migratory stays. The bay borders the King Ranch and the Kenedy Ranch, so the possibility of seeing wildlife is good, including deer, javalinas, Nilgai, and smaller mammals like raccoons. One of the most popular items on the restaurant’s menu is black drum ribs, usually served with hand-breaded onion rings. The Baffin Bay Seafood Company may just be the only restaurant to serve these tasty ribs fried with cornmeal. They are delicious! Especially with their homemade tartar sauce made with special secret ingredients. They offer other tasty sides, such as the grilled vegetables with onions and mushrooms. In addition to the black drum ribs, we tried the grilled and fried drum, which were both delicious. We just had to sample the fried shrimp and grilled shrimp. Both are very good, and my personal favorite was the big, plump grilled shrimp with a delicious fresh-catch taste. My husband, the gumbo expert in the family, said their gumbo is great! We also had oysters on the half shell and fried oysters. Steaks and chicken are also available for those who aren’t in the mood for a great seafood dinner. HARLINGEN LA FERIA Save room for their delicious desserts! You’ll enjoy 2803 W. Exp 83 215 W. SMOK D EXTENSIVE Linda, a local, said the drum ribs are so good they don’t Brisket, ChiE & U N cken, E M Ribs, Sausage need any kind of sauce to complement their delicious flavor. ES ID S Turkey & Pork , She loves the ribs and the Baffin Bay Seafood Company is the only place she knows that serves them. Greg, another local, said his favorite by far is the frog legs. “I like to come on Mondays when frog legs are the special,” he said. 3 Meat 4 Meat A trip to the Baffin Bay Seafood Company, combined Plate Mini Sampler with a sightseeing trip to the King Ranch, might just be + 2 Sides + 1 Side unbeatable. From ing their livestock they have been raising just for the show. While the event begins on Thursday, March 12 and runs through Sunday, March 22, there are special days where visitors can take advantage of specials. Senior Day is just one of those days. This day includes door prizes and special entertainment starting at 10 a.m. Senior Day this year will be held on Wednesday, March 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission rates will be $5 for those 60 and above. And if you have family in town, 4 p.m. to close is a special rate for military and first responders. This does not include parking. Otherwise, one-day gate admission is $12.50 for adults and $5 for children. Some of the other events – rodeos and bull riding shows – have additional pricing. Most of the events throughout the week

pg. 1 repeat every day. There are some special concerts, demonstration, and judging of animals that change daily. Events happening on senior day include kids steer roping, a banana derby, Fables of the West entertainment, fast action motorsports entertainment, racing pigs, antique farm machinery demonstration, Tyzen comedy hypnotist, PRCA Xtreme Bull Riding and more. The carnival opens at noon each day. Special entertainment throughout the week includes Chris Marshall, Spazmatics, Lauren Corzine, Randall King, Selena tribute, Drew and the Danchall Dreamers, Bobby Pulido, Kevin Fowler, Brady Honeycutt, Michael Jackson tribute, Tim Gonzalez-The Santana of Harmonica, and many more. A draw for a lot of people is the exhibits. An exhibit that shows the craftsmanship of high school students learning to

weld and work with wood can be found in the Youth Center. These kids sometimes work all year – beginning at the end of last year’s Livestock Show – to master a piece to enter the competition held for the local 4-H and FFA shop students. Another exhibit worth checking out is the western art show and photography contest display. This exhibit will be located in the event center. As always, there will be plenty of animals to see. You can sit and watch students showing their animals to the judges during judging times or visit with the students while you walk around looking at the many breeds of cows, rabbits, lambs and pigs. These kids have bonded with their animals and now have the chance to reward themselves with how well they present the animal and how well they took care of their animal. The RGVLS promotes the youth of South Texas through leadership development, agricultural education and competition with a goal of creating the leaders of tomorrow. Through their participation, they have an opportunity to learn skills and earn scholarships. The Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show started in 1939 as a project of the Mercedes Chamber of Commerce. first show was held in 1940 and has been held at its current location since 1949 (1000 North Texas). It has grown from being done in makeshift pens, to tents, to now having specialized barns and facilities to hold all different types of animals. The show was incorporated and chartered as a non-profit educational organization with a board of directors representing all of the four southmost counties in 1947. It is estimated that millions of dollars have been paid to FFA and 4-H exhibitors during the show’s existence. The show, which has continued to grow every year, now ranks as one of the top ten in the state. People from all over the state eagerly anticipate the event and come to enjoy the many activities. There are over 600 volunteers that help every year to get the show running smoothly. For more information about the RGVLS, visit www.rgvls.com. From ters, could visit the park and live for two weeks. That's all it took to convince several people to come back and stay. “That was huge for us,” Poyer said. “They made friends and some already had friends here, so they wanted to be a part of that and all we have to offer.” The friendliness response is a two-way street; hospitals, schools and other businesses also have found Winter Texans to be extremely friendly, volunteering and donating their time for many great causes including raising scholarships for children, helping the Food Bank or just being a part of area charity golf tournaments. “They just mean too much to the Valley, in every aspect.” Miller said. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES While thousands of Northerners relocate to the Rio Grande Valley for up to six

pg. 8 months, dozens of top-class entertainers spend anywhere from one to three months in the Valley to Wintertain crowds at different parks. They come from Branson, Missouri, Las Vegas, Nashville and even Canada to add to the Winter Texan living experience. Rusty Rierson, the 2019 Valley Star Awards Male Vocalist of the Year, had a No. 1 country hit in Europe called “Stickers on a Bentley;” Dave Salyer from the Dave and Daphne show, a three-time Duo of the Year, played lead guitar for Barbara Mandrell and was called one of the greatest guitarists in the land by country star Roy Clark. While Wintertainers and the hundreds of dances held throughout the Valley is a big part of what Winter Texans do (“We go out dancing at least three times a week,” said Dan Cornwell at Tropic

Star RV Park. “We especially like Steven May.”), there has also been new interests exploding at parks, especially pickleball and remote-control racing. At Llano Grande and Alamo Rec, there are tracks for race cars and even some boat racing going on. More and more parks are building a variety of tracks – from cement to dirt to even carpet – the hobby has taken the Valley by storm as Baby Boomers start getting into retirement mode and are looking for different activities to take part in. Alamo Rec even has one of the only

indoor gun ranges in the nation at an RV Park. “We are a pretty young 55 and older park,” said Poyer, adding that residents even had some RC drag racing events in the Hynes Center parking lot. “New residents are coming in wanting to do different things and hear different things. We have so much going on here all the time, they usually find what they are looking for or they ask, and we try to accommodate them.”

also scheduled, featuring the most famous battle Antonio compound known as the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto, where Houston defeated General Santa Ana and ended the war and proclaimed Texas its own Republic. Actors representing both sides will meet in combat on the battleground, each side wearing period attire reflecting the uniforms and clothing of the era. The battle scenes are played-out with simulated canon and musket fire, smoke, dust and blood with narration during the scenes, and the heartbreaking death of Davy Crockett. But it’s not all history. A Winter Texan Appreciation event will be held Friday morning. At noon on Saturday, area law enforcement will have a Tug-of-War com-

petition. There will also be an IBCA state sanctioned “State Championship” cookoff. Fabulous Grammy Award-winner Elida Reyna y Avante, the legendary Jaime de Anda, the colorful Los Garcia Brothers, Zereno, Hache Tres, Grupo Azido, Roy Solis, Midnight Run, Los City Boys and San Benito’s own Los Resaca City Boys, as well as local school conjunto, choir, folklorico, and dance teams. For those who like flashy vehicles, cruise by a huge car show hosted by The Zines. The San Benito Fairgrounds are located at 25699 Cesar Gonzalez Parkway. Events are held from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day. For a full schedule, visit their website at www.happybirthdaytexas.com.
