Ed Martens recognized at softball game

2020 Canada/USA softball game brings largest crowd yet

Excitement buzzed throughout the bleachers, in the dugouts and on the field as the U.S. loaded the bases with one out and were down by one run in the bottom of the eighth inning. It was the first of two games in the annual U.S. versus Canada Senior All-Star Softball Game at Westside Park in McAllen. The U.S. had taken a commanding lead during the first half of the game, but Canada worked its way back. Doug Scoville put the Canadians in the lead in the top half of the eighth with a double and now the Americans were trying to win a thriller of the game. They came up just short however, turning a double play. Scoville was part of the last play as well at second base. It was quite a game and quite a day for

Ed Martens stood behind home plate and waited for the ceremonial first pitch that would announce the beginning of the annual U.S. versus Canada softball games at West Side Park in McAllen. The pitch was delivered high but Martens, who may have been born with a glove on his hand, reached up and See RECOGNIZED pg. 9

Event cancellations amid Covid-19 concerns

With the situation changing daily around the country, it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with the number of event and activity cancellations and postponements. Unfortunately, this has brought the Winter Texan season to an early close for some, and for others simply means a few quiet weeks in the park while we wait for the latest updates. Several parks in the Rio Grande Valley have cancelled events or have closed See CANCELLATIONS pg. 21 INDEX “On the road with Jo” p8 Parks Calendar p 11 Events Calendar p 20 WintertainersTM p 13 Taste of the Valley p 19 Business Guide p 23 Classifieds p 24

Rock and Roll growing in the WT community

By Tony Ozark EDITOR’S NOTE: This story was submitted by a Winter Texan. We welcome your ideas and submissions. Many of our best stories and leads come from ideas and stories provided by you. Each year from November to April, thousands of senior citizens, known as Winter Texans, travel to the Rio Grande Valley from all parts of Canada and the United States to enjoy the weather and activities at the multitude of senior resort and RV parks. Many of these resorts and parks feature weekly music jams providing the opportunity for musicians to display their talents providing entertainment to the residents and visitors. Prior to 2013, the music venues at these jams were limited to country, blueSee ROCK pg. 6

Scoville, who took over organizing the games from Ed Martens, who retired from the tournament director spot after more than 20 years. The second game wasn't quite as suspenseful as the Americans scored big and didn't allow the Canadians back in the game en route to a 10-run rule victory. “The game was just a perfect script, to win by one in the eighth,” Scoville said. “It was dynamite for the fans and for us too. The suspense was just great.” More than 300 fans and approximately 400 people overall, enjoyed perfect weather except for a few gusts of wind here and there. Fans came with their country colors on, and many wore small flags in their visors or hats supporting both countries. “ M a r i l y n (Doug's wife) and I recognize this for being more than a softball game; but for what it brings together too,” Scoville said. “It allows me and so many others to stay active for one, and for another there were Canadians, Winter Texans, Mexicans, locals all on the teams just having fun. “When we're out there playing ball, all the rest of the world and its problems disappear; it's so positive in that respect.” Doug and Marilyn are from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, a 2,800-mile trip to the Valley. There wasn't the infrastructure

in that part of Canada to play high school baseball/softball in Nova Scotia when Doug was in school. Now, he's making up for that time and enjoying every inning and every pitch. “Your high school stadiums are as big as our University stadiums,” Scoville said. “Once we left Little League, that was about it for us. When slow pitch came around, it was a Godsend for those in their 30s, 40s or older. Everyone is involved in the game. If you're in the field, it's not like you're watching a pitcher throwing fastballs. It's a great activity and the City of McAllen did a great job setting up extra bleachers, making sure the field was Grade A-1 and helping out so much. “We had probably 15 sponsors, the response from anywhere we went was unbelievable.” Even a member of the Canadian Parliament got involved, sending a Canadian flag and more than 100 Canadian pins that the Canada team gave to the American Team. State Rep. Sergio Munoz also got in on the action, donating a large Texas flag for game day flying. “This is our first year to organize and we didn't have any history,” Scoville said. “We couldn't believe the response and interest. It's a good news story. We don't know how far it's gonna go but we're looking forward to it.”

A note from VSO

Under rapidly changing circumstances, and with the health and wellbeing of the Valley community in mind, the Valley Symphony Orchestra has made the difficult decision to postpone its March 27 season finale concert, Designed by Dabrowski. The decision was made in alignment with state and county leaders’ recommendations to limit large gatherings in order to slow the spread of COVID-19. While there are no confirmed cases in the area, the VSO wants to do its part to be sure

everyone stays healthy in the weeks to come. The March 27 concert will be rescheduled for a later date. The VSO will contact ticket holders in the coming days to transfer tickets to the new date and provide further information. Additional updates will be issued as necessary. Patrons may call the office at (956) 661-1615 or email the organization at hello@valleyorchestra.org with immediate questions or concerns.

grass, big band or gospel. In 2013, a rock and roll jam was born at Canyon Lake RV Resort in Mission, with the guidance of two Canadian rock and rollers named Daryl and Heike Schuller. Since then, rock and roll specific jams have expanded to at least ten parks in the Rio Grande Valley. Some of those parks include Bentsen Grove in Palmview, Casa Del Sol in Donna, Casa Del Valle in Alamo, Greengate Resort in Palmview, Eastgate MH and RV Park in Harlingen, Lakewood RV Resort in Harlingen, McAllen Mobile Park, Paradise Resort Estates in Pharr, Tropic Star RV Resort in Pharr and Tropic Winds RV Resort in Harlingen. The Winter Texan Times was able to cover one of these jams at Casa Del Valle several months ago and had a lot of fun. The Attendees were active singing along, clapping and dancing to the music provided by the jammers. Bentsen Grove also has a very active Rock and Roll Jam. In 2018, the activity director Peggy Creach wanted to start a rock and roll jam. She searched for a leader and found Cliff (drummer) and Cathy (manager) Squier from Manitoba, Canada to lead each jam starting in December 2018. The band members on stage included Cliff; Gerald Spanhanks on lead guitar and vocals; Shirley Spanhanks, Mark Schwendner and RK Welander on guitar and vocals; and Donald Leet on Bass guitar and vocals. In addition to these musicians, others, known as jammers, attend sharing their vocal and or musical instrument talents in front of park residents and visitors. On February 6, the following jammers performed – Barry Brent, Larry

Christensen, Jean Closson, Judy Minden, Tony Ozark, Pat, Michelle Petersen, Peggy Soucek, David Thompson, Bill Ward, Lily and Bob Wiebe. The rock and roll jams feature primarily music from the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s. The music played is from such artists as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Doobie Brothers, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Roy Orbison, Eagles, Ventures, Paul Anka, Chuck Berry, Ricky Nelson, Everly Brothers, Dion, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Wilson Pickett, Richie Valens, Del Shannon, Beach Boys and many more. After visiting the Rio Grande Valley, the jammers return to their specific states or Canadian province. Most of the band and jammers are vocalists with many playing instruments like the guitar (acoustic, electric, dobro, steel, bass), drums, banjo, mandolin, flute and others. The majority of the musicians started their musical pursuits as a young child either as a vocalist, dancer, or learning to play an instrument. Music was not their main career but a part time venture. Many sang in choirs, sang and played music in high school or college bands. They continued to entertain part time as adults performing in bars, schools, nursing homes, weddings, choirs, etc. Some even formed bands or groups that would entertain audiences. A few of the musicians started later in their adult life teaching themselves how to play various instruments. Rock and roll continues to be the fastest growing music currently in the Rio Grande Valley. After rock and roll, what will be the next type of music to be performed by senior citizens in the RGV?

Bentsen Palm RV Park shows appreciation

Bentsen Palm RV Park recently showed their appreciation of its residents by holding special events all week. Events included boat races, special get togethers, and an Amazing Race. T h e Amazing Race was a challenge race where participants were given locations of items – or hints on where to find items – in the park. The participants then raced off on their golf carts to find the items, take a picture and then head back to the clubhouse. After three tasks were completed and approved by the judges, the participants then had to complete challenges that were set up in the clubhouse – challenges included a

ring toss, basketball, and other games. All challenges and items had to be completed to declare a winner. The week was capped off with a fully catered dinner, in which Marcie Swenson, activity director at the park, said it was so no one had to do anything. It was fully catered with others doing the work – letting park residents and volunteers relax and enjoy themselves without having to worry about who was going to clean up.

Summer tours coming up

Good morning to all of you who are still here in the Rio Grande Valley. And many of us are here year-round. Winter Texan season may have ended but many of us have transplanted ourselves into the semi tropical region of Texas, the Rio Grande Valley. We live here year-round and have become rooted in this tropical paradise. Even so, we like a little vacation time, too. So, let' s look at what is available for us during this upcoming summer season. Dates are available now for the Eagle Pass Casino Tour. Departures are not as frequent during the summer season but at least two departures per month are available each month. You might call these tours a "get away tour" so if your time is limited, these tours might be for you. Just remember the machines are not very often in favor of the player. The first tour that was requested and placed on the calendar for this summer is a seven-day bus tour in July to New Mexico. That tour will be led by Father Joe Villalon who fondly remembers the bus tours that he took with his family when he was growing up. There is no better way to see the country than by car or bus. This seven-day tour is proving to be very popular and is almost sold out. The routing will take us right through San Antonio and into the beautiful hill country of Texas. Then on through the high plains of Texas before arriving into Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Years ago, a favorite tour wound up

through the Hill Country and on to Amarillo and the Palo Dura Canyon, the second largest canyon in the United States. It is time to repeat that tour. Parents, grandparents and especially students studying Texas History will enjoy this tour. There is so much to see and do in the Hill Country, especially around Fredericksburg with the LBJ Ranch and nearby Stonewall with those big juicy Texas peaches. As we continue our tour, travel through Midland and on to Amarillo and the Palo Dura Canyon. This summer marks the 55th season for the presentation of the outdoor musical, Texas. Critics consider Texas to be the most spectacular outdoor drama in the world. The Palo Dura Canyon is truly a magical place with a 600-foot cliff used as the backdrop for the play. You will be proud to be a Texan - native or transplanted and rooted - as you watch the play depicting the hard ships the settlers had to overcome. You will enjoy an included barbeque dinner before the play begins. The finale to the play is, of course, what else but a real Texas sized fireworks display. Also considered a must see while in Amarillo is the nearby Plains Historical Museum and a drive by to see the Cadillac Ranch where some eccentric felt that planting a few Cadillac’s nose down in the middle of his pasture would create a real tourist attraction. And so, it has. Watch for dates and price in the next publication.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES RECOGNIZED

From snagged the pitch, something he probably could’ve done with his eyes closed. Martens, from Minnesota, is the father – the creator – of the Senior Softball League and US-Canada All Star game. He has worked endlessly for more than two decades promoting a sport he remains passionate about During pregame ceremonies before the games kicked off, Martens was recognized for the work he has done by the city of McAllen and received a plaque honoring that commitment. “It’s amazing to see what Ed has done over the years, he has so much knowledge of softball and baseball both,” said Denny Meline, deputy director of programs for the City of McAllen. “To see the support he gets, and the number of players that come out, it just confirms that there is a need for this.” At 87 years old, Martens eyes glimmer like that of a young boy on Christmas morning when he talks about a sport he has played all his life, first playing base-

His favorite players may have been outfielders such as Stan Musial for the St. Louis Cardinals or Mickey Mantle for the New York Yankees, but on the field he was more like the Cards’ Ozzie Smith or the Yanks’ Derek Jeter, playing shortstop with quickness, agility and a strong throwing arm. Now, however, Martens has retired from running the softball show. He has spent twenty-eight years with the league and 21 with the U.S.-Canada game. But retiring may not be the precise word… slowing down, cutting back… those may be more appropriate. “The purpose of the league is to have fun and bring in new players,” he said. “Every year we lose a few players but this year we got a lot of new ones, especially the ladies, so the door is open for them to come out and play ball. We have two divisions so they can play in the highly competitive A division or come to the B Division. They can have fun in either one.” Martens is always promoting the

league; that is something that will never change. The sport is a part of him and has always been. His love for it is so great that while he was serving in the military, some of his brothers snuck him out of a military hospital – against his superior’s orders not to play that game – so he could play. That game, in Manila, was broadcast on military radio and it just so

happened that his superior was tuning in. “Yeah,” Martens joked while reminiscing. “I almost got court martialed for that.” Nobody can question Martens’ passion after hearing that story. Martens isn’t exactly leaving the sport. He will still work with the B Division with hopes of increasing the number of teams in it from the four it has now. But he also plans on doing more bicycling, something he has grown fond of as well in recent years. “We just want to have a lot of fun with it,” Martens said. “It’s a fun thing to do.”

Palm Resaca Mobile Home Park in Brownsville recently unveiled a plaque recognizing the oldest known anacahuita (Mexican Olive Tree) in the United States. Seven hundred years. The plaque reads that the tree was a seedling before the turn of the 15th century and, therefore, mature and reproductive before the arrival of Spanish explorers. “It’s incredible as we mere mortals gaze on a majestic Mexican olive tree, to fathom life that has flourished for 700 years,” said Dianne Miller, park resident. Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. presented the park with a Texas State Flag and an award in recognition of the tree on Friday, March 6. “The tree is the oldest of its kind in the United States,” he said proudly, “and we are very delighted to have it here in Brownsville. Roy Reyes, the Brownsville City Forrester, presented the park with a “Tree City USA” flag. Brownsville has been designated as a tree city for 20 years. The city encourages developers to preserve as much vegetation as possible around new builds. He added that preservation efforts and events such as this help give the City of Brownsville that recognition. Both flags will fly prominently beside the tree. Tree Committee Chairperson Beryl Stovell received the awards on behalf of the park.

“We put a lot of hard work into making this event happen and we are very proud of our efforts,” stated Stovell. UTRGV professor Andrew McDonald, a noted botanist, gave an impassioned speech about how important it is to preserve the native trees and plants in Texas. It was McDonald who determined that the tree was 600-700 years old, meaning it predates the arrival of the Spanish in North America. The native name for the tree is anacahuita. The Mexican olive tree usually grows to a height of 30 feet. The one in the park is 35 feet tall. It has large, soft, dark leaves and large, showy, trumpet shaped white flowers. The northern limit of the tree is South Texas because it can’t tolerate cold winters. The professor also encouraged park residents to consider using native plants to revitalize their Resaca. UTRGV emeritus professor and historian Anthony Knopp, said “This is from pre-history, the period from which we have no recorded information. It’s clear that the weather was cooler and wetter than it is now.” Knopp said thousands of years ago, the Rio Grande River passed through where the tree is now. The Gulf of Mexico was also 400 feet higher – modern day Brownsville would have been under See GROWTH pg. 22

Freddy’s Steakburgers: Differently delicious

,

A trip to Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers is more than a trip to another burger joint. For me, this was like a trip back home. In fact, manager e Alexis Quiroz and I talked about the uniqueness that is Freddy’s. h The burger patties are thin but bigger than the bun, filled with flavor and some savory crispiness around the edges. The seasonings Freddy’s uses don’t get buried inside an inch-thick patty that gives off nothe ing but meat flavor. This, in itself was unique and the way my mom would make burgers back home WITH PURCHASE OF ANY COMBO MEAL y in New York. Not valid with any other offers. WINTER TEXAN TIMES CANCELLATIONS

From park events to the public. Some of the parks that we know have cancelled events include Ranchero Village, Snow to Sun, Casa del Valle, Tropic Winds, Aladdin Villas, and Tropical Valley Acres. Cities have cancelled most of their big gatherings as well. Events at the McAllen Convention Center and Performing Arts Center scheduled for March have been cancelled. Other events that have been cancelled include the Monarch Festival and the RGV Home and Garden Show. Also cancelled, or suspended, are the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show, Tourist Day in Nuevo Progreso and the Texas Onion Fest in Weslaco. The Native Plant Project scheduled for March 24th has also been cancelled. For any other events published in our reunions and meetings, events and parks calendars, and advertisements – please call the venue or contact and make sure the event is still being held before you decide to attend. While we have received information for some of the cancellations, we likely have not received all the updates we would like to pass along. We here at the Winter Texan Times are taking as much care as we can to stay on top of events in the Valley and let you know where they are happening. We have

If you become aware of changes to area activities and events, please let us know by email at news@wintertexantimes.com. As always, if you have events you would like to share, send us the information. We always accept submissions from the parks on events that are going on, pictures, short write up and whatever else you might want to share with us – then we can share what we can with our readers – and you. We feel we must stress, that even if an event or activity is still going forward, we ask that our cherished readers please take care in deciding whether to attend. The elderly are the hardest hit by this virus and should take the greatest precautions with their exposure and health. We want you to enjoy your time in the Valley, but we also want to be sure you make it home safe and healthy so that you can come back in the fall to enjoy another great season with the Winter Texan Times in the Rio Grande Valley. Be sure to keep up with the latest area information on www.WinterTexanTimes. com where we will also be sharing ways you can help support our area advertisers as they struggle through the economic impact of increasing restrictions on public gatherings.

For us, we are taking each day one day at a time, working from home when we can, and having a bit more family time. Our season is coming to an end as well. We have Spring and Summer projects to work on, but we are taking it easy for a bit to see how everything plays out. We do appreciate each and everyone of you and hope to see you next year. Take care of yourself, wash your hands, and look out for your neighbor as well.

water. Thrilled to find such a gemstone of creation in her own backyard, Stovell said, “It is absolutely wonderful to be one of the custodians of one of the most ancient anacahuita trees there is, and it’s in our park. We all admire and love its constant blossoming.” Park neighbor Alden Moore recounted that at one time, one of the park residents wanted to tree cut down because its leaves were making too much of a mess on his lawn. “Fortunately for everyone, this didn’t

happen,” said Moore. “or we would have lost a national treasure. Now it’s our job to nurture this tree and protect it. It will be a lasting legacy for our children.” This grand sprawling olive tree continues to bloom, shade and inspire the residents of Palm Resaca Park and now occupies its rightful place as a matriarch of North American nature.
