Alamo Winter Texans enjoy St. Patrick’s Day
Wow! What a season. Carina and I have had such a great time in our first season as the new publisher and editor of the Winter Texan Times. Having grown up with this paper, my feelings for our Winter Texan community have grown from appreciation to admiration to love over the years, and we are so humbly grateful for the opportunity to continue what my Dad and Grandmother built for all or you. But, I’ll get back to that in a bit. See THANK YOU pg. 25
Winter Texans taking it one day at a time
Us here at the Winter Texan Times have been trying to connect with our Winter Texans more this year. In doing so, we have developed relationships with some that we are finding hard to say goodbye to for the season, and with the COVID-19 pandemic we are now worried for our friends – for all of you. Y’all have been on our minds as we are making our own decisions on working from home, shutting down the office, and other decisions that we don’t have to face on a day to day basis. The kitchen crew who cooked up the supper from Royal Palms
By Herb Moering St. Paddy’s Day last week was pretty much of a bust around the nation with the coronavirus putting a damper on all the big city observances. That is except in South Texas where some St. Patrick’s Day park parades were held. The City of Alamo had at least two, one at La Hacienda Estates and another at Royal Palms Mobile Home Park. The one at Royal Palms was smaller than last year’s, in part due to Canadian residents ordered to return home last week. Leading off was this year’s “Winter Texan of the Year,” Joe Hummel, who rode in his homemade rickshaw with his wife, LeAnn, who come from South Dakota. They were hitched to a golf cart See ST. Bicycling – A sport good for your soul
By Pete Luna When anyone reaches a retirement age, we all have a choice to enter a sedentary or an active lifestyle. While relaxing and going out to eat in all the wonderful restaurants the Rio Grande Valley has to offer is a great way to enjoy leisure time during the winter months, cycling and other outdoor physical activities are a fantastic way to create a wellness balance for Winter Texans. Regular physical activity helps to improve physical, cognitive and psychological health as we obtain a wellearned departure from the working life. Therefore, hobbies and exercise should be introduced into your routine. While arts and crafts, fishing, shooting are no doubt fun activities to do; cycling is something that creates an influence on all aspects of See BICYCLING pg. 6

The top award entry in the Royal Palms afternoon parade, which featured golf carts, a scooter and some walkers, ended in a tie based on balloting by residents and spectators. Devona Slater and her daughter, Sandy Olafson, who both flew out the next day for Canada, had a golf cart featuring flowers and beverages, while Don Wartner, from Minnesota, rode his decorated medical scooter. St. Patrick’s Day parades were a creation of Irish immigrants. They transformed March 17, the date of Ireland’s patron saint’s death in 461 and original-
ly a time of religious services and feasts, into a largely secular holiday of revelry and a celebration of things Irish. Cities with large numbers of Irish staged extensive celebrations, which included elaborate parades. Boston held its first St. Patrick’s Day parade in 1737, followed later by New York City in 1762. Since 1962 Chicago has colored its downtown river green to mark the holiday. Blue was actually the traditional color, but green is now commonly connected for the “wearing of the green” holiday. Usually corned beef and cabbage is the meal of the holiday, but the Women’s Club at Royal Palms offered a fancy pota-

WINTER TEXAN TIMES There are almost five or six outdoor physical events held every month with almost half of them being coordinated to fundraise for various non-profit organizations, scholarships or other ways to support people in need. A perfect example is the Jalapeno 100 which is a multi-distance event which benefits the Boys and Girls Club of Harlingen. Winter Texan involvement has grown over the years with some participants choosing to ride one of the routes which are 12, 25, 50, 65 and 100 miles. Others are also welcomed to spectate and/or volunteer for various support roles. The Jalapeno 100 just had its 30th annual event this past February. A relatively new event that is making waves in San Benito is the annual Resaca City Bike Tour which just had their 4th annual in February. According to Megan TreviĂąo, Executive Director of the San Benito Chamber of Commerce, the 4th annual event went really well this year; there was an
www.wintertexantimes.com increase in attendance and participation with about 200 riders of which 15% were Winter Texans. Meanwhile, the support from the business and cycling community was amazing, which lead to the largest attendance they have ever had. With businesses providing water and food for riders and volunteers and promoting various businesses; it was a way to help local businesses grow all while benefitting the health and happiness of our local communities. Both events are looking for even bigger turnouts and increased participation from our Winter Texans next year. Supporting local businesses Anyone who rides bikes knows that if you enjoy this activity, eventually your bike will need a tune up, flat tire repair and a shop to find accessories. Not to worry, we have multiple bike shops throughout the Rio Grande Valley. This Winter Texan season, we had two bike outfitters advertise with us. As you learn more about the wildlife around you, you can then help others identify their observations. Or, if you feel comfortable identifying wildlife, you can add identifications to other people’s observations during the City Nature Challenge’s second phase. You might be surprised by how much life is all around us – even in our homes. An iNaturalist project called “Never Home Alone: The Wild Life of Homes” has recorded over 1,900 species where we live, including lady beetles, moths, and jump- Northern Mockingbird ing spiders. We also have an incredible diversity of life in our back and front yards in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Great Kiskadees, Northern Mockingbirds, and Golden-fronted Woodpeckers are some of our most abundant backyard birds. A closer inspection of your lawn will probably re-
veal plants like three-lobed falsemallows and prostrate lawnflowers - maybe even Gregg’s tubetongue or tropical speedwell. Wild olive trees host alien-like tortoise beetle larvae, carpenter bees hover near dead wood in search of good nest sites, and skipper butterflies bounce from flower to flower - all in the confines of our yards. Taking time to explore the natural world around us - even in our yards and cities has been shown to help reduce stress and anxiety. When I find a beetle skittering across a leaf, or see a bee golden with pollen grains, I can’t help but feel that we are not alone. Even, or perhaps especially, in troubling times, the great diversity of life can be comforting companions. There’s a great diversity of life waiting to be seen right around us – share your sightings during the City Nature Challenge from April 24 – 27 at www.inaturalist.org.

Alamo's "Winter Texan of the Year," Joe Hummel rides in his rickshaw with his wife, LeAnn, pulled by John and Donaline Mitts. Crazy 8 golf cart time trial race was held. Dan Hartman had the fastest time on the course in his cart. All of the events were recorded in photos by Durango Mendoza, who comes from Illinois. With all the restrictions being implemented because of the virus, most events are either being cancelled with spring just around the corner or postponed a few
weeks in hope that the crisis will be winding down by then. Eldridge reported that has meant the end of La Hacienda’s big band and country jams for the season. But, come November the jams will be back on and Eldridge will be planning her next park party, a Christmas event in December.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES BICYCLING From pg. 7
has been around since I was a kid They have all sorts of bikes for any Winter Texan and they focus on what type of bike is right for you. They sell recumbents, trikes, comfort bikes, road and mountain bikes too. Additionally, comfort and safety are paramount in riding, especially if you are new to cycling as the experience should leave you feeling the endorphins of good aerobic exercise and not the soreness of a bike saddle. With Locations in McAllen, Harlingen and Brownsville, Bicycle World RGV covers all three major metropolitan areas of the Rio Grande Valley. What about a mobile repair service? Five Star Bicycles is the first of its kind in our area that offers bicycles assembled, adjusted and delivered to your doorstep or workplace. Five Star boasts having serviced over 30 bikes in one day, typically for Winter Texan bicycle clubs who are getting ready for cycling events. With years of experience, Five Star Bicycles can deliver new bikes or provide repair to your cycling clubs bikes on location at your parks. Whichever bike outfitter you use, just know that there is plenty of support and invitation for Winter Texans to participate and share the enjoyment of cycling. Socializing Last, but definitely not least, the Valley
has multiple Winter Texan Bicycle clubs which are usually seen riding in the early mornings with a support vehicle riding behind the group. These social rides are, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful sights that Winter Texans bring to deep South Texas. Social and group rides are a fantastic way to meet others who love cycling, get your miles in and stop in at one of the multiple great local restaurants to eat lunch. Just the other day a co-worker and I went to eat at the Drunken Chicken in the city of Mission. The Bentsen Grove Easy Riders were having a meal with the entire fleet of bicycles parked outside. The conversations were flowing, and everyone was smiling – which is further proof that cycling improves health, mood and overall happiness. I have to say that at that moment, I wished I could have been a part of that morning ride. Additionally, I was later notified that the group had ridden 14 miles, stopped for lunch and then rode back to their park. We look forward to next year’s cycling events, group social rides and all we have to offer Winter Texans in regard to outdoor activities and cycling. In the meantime, please be safe.

THANK YOU From pg. 1
Today’s Issue Let me start by pointing out some changes to our format for this final issue of the season. Due to the rapidly changing landscape across the county in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are deviating from what we would normally bring you in an issue of the Winter Texan Times. We usually pride ourselves in being different from the dailies and weeklies out there that must cover the hard stories. We enjoy being your community newspaper and allowing ourselves the freedom to cover the “good news” and all the fun times we are sharing in the Winter Texan community. As we have been monitoring the situation and making decisions about our office operation, our staff and their health, our thoughts and prayers have also been on you, our Winter Texans and the additional vulnerability this virus holds for your age group. Because of that you will see some differences in today’s issue as well as on our website at www.WinterTexanTimes.com. First, we felt it we should stop publishing events happening during this period when we should all be practicing wise social distancing practices. So, we pulled our calendars from our website last week (guidance developed a bit too late to change last week’s issue before it went to press), and we are limiting this week’s calendars in this issue to those events still scheduled starting with the end of the current Hidalgo County order. These orders are likely to continue to change and be extended, so please stay abreast of that information on our website and plan the remainder of your stay as is appropriate to conditions and guidance. Second, we have decided to commit a bit of this final issue to how this virus is impacting the Winter Texan community as we are coming to the close of another season. Last, we are publishing a special supplement that was provided to us by one of our publishing partners. The center 12 pages of today’s issue are a special pullout section of the paper that may answer some lingering questions, and certainly repeat some of the guidance and advice that we have received, but we feel bears repeating until we all get it. Monitoring the Situation As this is our last scheduled issue for the season, there won’t be another Winter Texan Times to bring you further updates and direction as it comes out, but we will continue to monitor the situation and keep you informed on our website at www. WinterTexanTimes.com. As we learn of changes that affect our Winter Texan community, we will share that information as we receive it. Visit our website often to watch for new
updates on our front page and subscribe to our email newsletter so that you’ll receive a weekly summary of new stories found on our site. You can subscribe by following the “subscribe free” button at the top of our web page and filling out the form at the end of that link. In the coming days, we will also be launching a section on our website devoted to what you can do to remain active and support your community. We will be looking for ways you can stay connected and active while social distancing, and ideas to support local businesses that are having to adapt their business models in order to stay afloat. Here we will also be sharing area promotions, curb-side menus, mail order retail options, gift card ideas, and more that you may take advantage of to continue to support your favorite local establishments. Thank You! As I started out, I want to thank you our readers, park owners and managers, activity directors, and Wintertainers for the great community you have built here in the Rio Grande Valley. Without this community – without you – Carina and I would not have this opportunity to work and play in your community and bring your community newspaper to you every week from October through March. Our first season as the new Publisher and Editor of the Winter Texan Times has brought plenty of excitement. While the Winter Texan Times is not new to us, the change in role has certainly been eventful. It has been a pleasure to bring you community updates about how they are expanding amenities and bringing more to the community to do. And we love to hear the feedback we receive while out and about. Everyone has been so welcoming to us as we have joined you at jams, shows, expos, races, tournaments, and more. We have enjoyed watching all the fun and creative ways our Winter Texans gather and just know how to have a good time. It is validating to hear the compliments and to know that we are bringing something of interest and value to you in the Winter Texan Times. Just when we thought we had packed in as much fun as we could into one season, we had the best Valley Star Awards ever – and that couldn’t have happened without our Wintertainers; you, their fans; and our activity directors keeping their schedules jam packed with great entertainment. Thank you for the great season. As I opened, Carina and I do love our Winter Texan friends and we pray for your health and safety as you travel back north. Stay safe and healthy, and hurry back next fall. We can’t wait to do this again!

PVAS needs foster families
Palm Valley Animal Society (PVAS) is asking for foster families to help get animals out of their shelter now. PVAS is taking serious measures to reduce the number of animals that are in the shelter, as they prepare for potential closure. “We want to reduce our shelter population by 50%. That means that we need to get 200 animals, dogs and cats alike, into temporary foster homes by Wednesday, March 25th. We’ve had higher-than-usual intake for the past three weeks and want to get ahead of any worsening in the trend. It is my primary goal to get our community to step up and help us save these animals. We don’t want to be forced to euthanize for space. We need our community support now, more than ever,” says PVAS Executive Director, Mike Bricker. Bricker says they are trying to move their staff to an A/B schedule and follow other protocols during the pandemic, as recommended by American Pets Alive! And Best Friends Animal Society. PVAS wants to follow these guidelines to flatten the curve and in hopes that if some staff get sick from COVID-19, the entire staff will not be affected, and they can still maintain caring for the animals in their shelters. Adoptions are being done by appointment, but the organization plans to continue letting rescue groups take animals
as they are willing, between the two facilities. “We’re asking owners who want to surrender their pets but aren’t facing an immediate crisis to contact us to make an appointment for a later date.” Bricker said. PVAS will provide veterinary care and additional supplies for foster families while they last. Contact foster@pvastx. org or visit pvastx.org/foster for more information. The organization hopes to raise funds to support pets in the community, stock fostering supplies, and prepare to help families and pets in need. People who can’t adopt or foster can make a donation to PVAS at pvastx.org/ donate or they can visit the PVAS Amazon Wishlist to donate supplies. Adoption fees for all animals are $0 until further notice. Monthly wellness clinics are cancelled until further notice. Palm Valley Animal Society is the shelter of record for Edinburg, Hidalgo, Hidalgo County, La Joya, McAllen, Palmhurst, and Palmview, serving approximately 750,000 residents and 30,000 animals each year. More information on the organization’s programs, services, and impact can be found online at pvastx.org.
TIME
From pg. 1 What we are hearing from those we talk to is that you are taking this one day at a time for now – as we all are. We are all watching the news, staying on top of the current findings, current regulations in our city, county, state and nation. It’s a bit chaotic to stay on top of everything, but we are trying our best. With staying on top of things, we have decided to not publish calendar items for the month of March. We know most, if not all, of these events have been cancelled – some until further notice. So, we are only publishing events that are in April and after for now. When we get more feedback on when events are happening, we will update our website. For now, we want to ere on the side of caution since we don’t know what next week, or even tomorrow, will be like.
If you do need to get in touch with anyone at the office, you can call our office phone at (956) 580-7800 or email news@ wintertexantimes.com or ads@wintertexantimes.com. Although our office doors will be closed to visits, we will still be answering calls and email. This week will also be our last week that we are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Next week we will begin business at 9 a.m. What are you doing? We have been able to reach out to a couple of Winter Texans at various parks to get an idea of how everyone is coping with this, especially those that travel back to their northern homes. Growing up in New York in a town filled with “those who Italian, and those who want to be Italian,” mom added some spice to all her dishes. The neighborhood kids would love to come t and try the next delicious offering. “What is it?” They would ask. “Bouillabaisse,” my mom would reply, 30 0 years removed from Cajun country but with an accent s (think Kathy Bates’ character in “The Water Boy”) like she still lived there. “What did she say?” would usually e be the next question, to me. , “Just shut up and try it,” was usually my response. She was right — it never burned the tongue, but soon enough the beads of sweat would start forming and the heat would begin from the inside. e So, as I perused the impressively varied menu from Stefano’s Pizza Express in Pharr, my eyes stopped at the Cajun shrimp pasta. I ordered that and the garlic knots and prepared my soul for what was to come. First, the restaurant’s appearance is quaint and modern. It feels comfortable for an express place. When I asked three different workers here what the best thing on their menu was, they all responded – the pasta and the Stromboli. It was pretty definite. The pasta arrived shortly, and it smelled fabulous. Mixed in with a creamy, almost chipotle-like sauce, were six nice sized and lightly blackened shrimp. The shrimp were cooked to perfection and had that hint of Cajun flavoring – not enough to set your soul on fire, but with just a hint of Cajun loveliness. For me, it could use more Cajun flavors but, of course, that’s what I’m accustomed to. This dish clearly had Cajun written on it and the dry rub that was on the shrimp mixed in nicely with the pasta and its sauce. After I finished the shrimp and half of the pasta (and four of the six large garlic knots, cooked with a generous portion of parmesan cheese and just enough oil to not be sloppy but to keep the cheese on the knots), I asked for some grilled chicken to put in the remainder of the pasta to bring home to my daughter. She gobbled it down in no time and asked me to make sure the next time I visit Stefano’s Express Pizza in Pharr, that I bring her too. Of course, after the response I received when I asked what their best offering was, I’m going after the Stromboli.

Mission Animal Shelter waives adoption fees
The kennels at Mission Animal Shelter are nearly full, and with more animals coming in daily, adoption fees are being waived until further notice. More than 40 cats and dogs are available for adoption now. “We are reaching out to our community to help us find homes for the many deserving animals waiting to be adopted because our shelter is at capacity,” Ernie Zapata, Health Department Supervisor
said. “Right now with so many people home during the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, it’s a great time to add a pet to their family. We have more dogs and cats coming in every day and need the support of animal lovers and all citizens.” Out of an abundance of caution regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, Mission’s Animal Shelter is not accepting any more animal surrenders. Mission animal control officers will continue to respond to
emergency calls for service including dog bites, sick or injured animals, and removal of dead animals. The shelter is also not accepting any new volunteers at this time. For more information on the animals up for adoption, please contact the Mission Pawsible Program at (956) 580-8741 Monday-Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. The City of Mission Animal Shelter is located at 227 Abelino Farias.

From pg. 28 time they have locked their gates at Bentsen Palm RV Park. In the recent weeks, one by one activities have had to be cancelled. “I was quite sad when the lady from Mr. Gatti’s called and said we could have our function at their place,” said Swenson. She was concerned about the lady that called – a single mom of two. “I am not only concerned about us, but also all of those that are losing their jobs,” she added. “We can do it one way or another,” said Swenson. “But these young ones – I worry about them.” At Bentsen Palm, she said quite a few residents are staying another month, others are in limbo on wondering if they should stay or leave. Kids are calling them and telling them they should head back home closer to them, she said.
Residents are thinking of the traveling hazards, of how much they would be exposed to when getting gas, staying at a hotel. “If there isn’t a reason to go home, most are staying,” she said. “We are doing what we are being told to – one day at a time.” For now, “All is well,” she said. “It’s interesting because this is nothing we have ever encountered,” said Swenson. Leisure Valley Ranch resident Angie Radosevic said everything at her park has been cancelled as well. The office is only open through this Friday. “Many of us are staying in,” she said. They are only going out to do any necessary shopping. Many of the parks Winter Texan residents have left already to go back north,

she added. Angie and her husband are Texan transplants, so they only travel a bit during the summer. They are hoping to go to a wedding in California in August, but aren’t sure how that is going to work out yet. Beryl Stovell, who winters at Palm Resaca Park, said most of the Winter Texans in her park are on their way home or are already are at their northern homes. Or, she said, are like them – who are in their second day of traveling north to Ontario. “There is a core group of Canadians in Palm Resaca,” she said, “who have chosen to weather it out till mid-April or later.” Stovell added that Canadian retirees under teacher pensions had to leave first and quickly. Their pension board announced that they had 10 days to be back in Canada after the pandemic announcement, or they would not be covered under their medical travel insurance. All events at the park had been can-
celled and the office and the Thomas Center are closed – “for the first time ever,” she said. As of this past Monday, the pool was still open, but to no more than 10 people at a time. “No hugs, no touching others, but lots of quiet visiting,” said Stovell. “One on one, at a distance, and usually outdoors.” She said there were many email edicts and encouragement from the Park Manager, Misty, about self-regulations and necessary isolation. “Everyone seems to have cooperated with social distancing and we are sad to have to leave a month early.” “So, it seems that we seniors of Palm Resaca are doing the best to follow necessary changes, which seem to come frequently,” said Stovell. “The graveness of the World’s health issues have caused us to take the situation seriously, and we are living, one day at a time.”
