Let’s enjoy the weather
These past two weeks have been filled with some great weather. The cooler weather has been nice, but it did hinder me getting out to the Island last week to visit the Sandcastles – cold, moist, and overcast is not a great combination for photo taking. I still look forward to going out there and seeing the beautiful creations the artists make for the Christmas season. They are currently working on their Christmas village displays, and although not open for walk-through yet, you can visit and look on as the sculptors work. Speaking of the weather though, it
Frontera Audubon trails are ready for walking
Nestled on a 15-acre tract of land near downtown Weslaco, Frontera Audubon is a city escape for the birds, butterflies and other wildlife that make it their home. Filled with rich vegetation, it’s hard to imagine that just a few feet away heavy traffic runs up and down Texas Blvd. It has become a birding hotspot for Weslaco. At one time, this place was an abandoned grapefruit orchard and thicket of Guinea grass and Mesquite – an area the city had wanted cleared in 1989.
The park is currently a haven for wildlife that thrive among the native habitats of its Tamaulipan Thornscrub forest, orchard butterfly garden, wetlands, and ponds. The non-profit organization has been in existence since

McAllen to celebrate Fiesta de Palmas
City of McAllen and the McAllen Convention Center Facilities announced its first major public event will be celebrated in a reimagined new normal. Fiesta de Palmas, presented by Reliant, will be celebrated this weekend, Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8, at Oval Park at the McAllen Convention Center, 700 Convention Center Boulevard. The event will feature social distanced, drive-through, curbside and virtual activities. “At Reliant, we love the rich, cultural heritage that makes McAllen special, and we’re honored to be part of that by helping bring Fiesta de Palmas to the community,” said Elizabeth Killinger, president of Reliant, a sponsor of the event. “We want to thank the City of McAllen and everyone who helped reimagine the festival to offer a safe option to celebrate local Mexican and Tejano culture.” Other sponsors of Fiesta de Palmas, which aims to promote an appreciation for international culture and especially, McAllen as an international city, include Budweiser, PepsiCo, T-Mobile, Metro McAllen and the City of McAllen. “The City of McAllen prides itself on the quality of life it provides for its residents and visitors,” said McAllen Mayor Jim Darling. “Since the start of the pandemic, we had to put a pause on all our great community events, festivals, celebrations, concerts, presentations,
shows and performances. With this new plan for getting together at a distance, we can safely celebrate the great cultures of McAllen in the newly reimagined Fiesta de Palmas, presented by Reliant.” The fun starts at 12 p.m. each day with a drive-through food truck festival, ending at 9 p.m. There is no cost to drive-through – just the cost

We received this adorable photo from Sara Young this past weekend and thought we would share it and her message. “For Halloween this year, we truly missed our trip visiting Mission Bell for trick or treating! I’ve been going since I was a little girl, and now have been taking my little family. Although we missed it this year, our babies decided to pay tribute to their wonderful Winter Texan friends dressing up as...well... Winter Texans! Here is Noah Young (three years old) and Grace Young (six months old). Little Grace missed her first year visiting Mission Bell, but we are hopeful to take her next year!” Parents are Sara and Caleb Young.

Community altars celebrate Día de los Muertos at IMAS
The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) invites the community to celebrate Día de los Muertos by visiting the altars exhibit honoring individuals of color who led the way in art and science fields. Community members are also invited to submit photos of their own altars to be featured in a virtual exhibit. T h e community altar exhibit includes seven colorful ofrendas on display at the IMAS through November 14. Six partnering o rg a n i z a tions were invited to create an altar to honor the life and career of important creators and experts. UTRGV Center for Latin American Arts created an altar for iconic fashion designer Oscar de la Renta with hand-painted skulls by UTRGV MFA alumna Angelica Rodriguez. The Boys & Girls Club of McAllen honored prolific artist Frida Kahlo with a vibrant display. Mission Historical Museum’s altar is a tribute to the famous Mexican illustrator José Guadalupe Posada. McAllen Public Library’s electric display is dedicated to the inventor of the color television transmission system, Guillermo González Camarena. African American chemist Alma Levant Hayden is honored by McAllen Public Utility (MPU). Valley Symphony Orchestra recollects Huapango with their altar for conductor and composter José Pablo Moncayo. IMAS is honoring fallen astronaut Dr. Kalpana Chawla. She was the first Indian-born American astronaut, and our altar brings her legacy to life. She was lost too soon, having perished during reentry on Space Shuttle Columbia in 2003. “The IMAS education team wanted to honor a female scientist of color to call attention to the lack of diversity
in science fields. How many female scientists can you name? It is important to have representation so our future scientists, RGV children who visit IMAS, can imagine themselves having these careers. That they know it is possible.” expresses Claudia Martinez Gray, IMAS Director of Education. Steve Shih, Associate Administrator of NASA’s Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity, states, “Our success in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math depends on a diversity of contributions, and benefits everyone, so this means we must make it inclusive.” A virtual altar exhibition will include photographs of altars from the community. Photos of altars can be submitted at theimasonline.org/ altars-exhibit/ and will be included in the virtual exhibit on the I M A S w e b site and F a c e b o o k page @ imasMcAllen. Daily hours Thursday through Saturday are 10 a.m.1 p.m. and 2-5 p.m. Admission is also free on Wednesday, October 28 for a sensory-friendly experience from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Pictured are The IMAS honors Kalpana Chawla, the first Indian-born astronaut to go to space, in an annual exhibit of community altars in celebration of Día de los Muertos. Community altars will be on display through November 14. Long Island Village Golf Course
Brownsville Golf Center Brownsville Golf Center Wide open fairways and large – yet quick – greens give golfers an opportunity to improve their game without being beaten up by courses that are sometimes way too challenging for those looking at the simpler things in life. Brownsville Golf Center is exactly what a municipal course should be, inviting and available to all levels of golfers. That is not to say it is not chal-
lenging, and water comes into play on most holes. Also, you still have to
carry that water at times and be strategic on several holes, deciding how much you want to cut a corner or to “go for it.” Just because a green is large does not always mean you want to be putting the length of it to get close to the pin.

as permanent residences. And don't be fooled – just because it's a par-3 course doesn't mean you can leave some of your clubs back at the house. With the unpredictable wind – in both strength and direction – you may have to choose between three or four clubs. This is not a putt-putt course. In fact, some of the holes may be the toughest in South Texas. Of course, some holes are forgiving too but you'll never get bored of playing this beautifully designed and fun course. Halloween and the spirit of Winter Texans
Ghouls, goblins and ghosts – and a whole bunch more – didn't wait for the stillness of night to make their scary presence seen and heard around Texas Trails RV Park in Pharr. But instead of screams of terror, these creepy images brought a resounding sigh of relief – and plenty of laughter (and candy) to go with good camaraderie. Sure, it was Halloween, but it was also an opportunity to take a step toward some normalcy amid a year where the COVID-19 pandemic has altered so many lives and the way they are lived. And what says normalcy among Winter Texans more than dressing up as zombies, witches and whatnots?
“It's a bunch of folks having fun,” said Lou Dewaele who, along with his wife Cathy, are activity directors for
the park. “Normally, we do a costume contest and dance but since we're not having dances we thought, 'What about a decorated cart, Halloween pa-
rade and costume contest?' It's not a bad turnout.”
Some of the nearly 300 residents who have already returned – or never left - kicked off the beginning of the holiday season and celebrated Halloween with a golf cart, moped and electric scooter parade around Texas Trails. Those who were not in all of their spookiness sat in their driveways and waited to see the caravan make its way through the park. There were more than 20 golf carts and other transporters taking part in the event – oddly enough, no brooms could be seen carrying their witches through
Stan and Brenda Noakes won first place, followed by Cheryl and Doug Shneider and Danny Short, with his bulldog. Christy Myers, of Duvall, Washington sat in her driveway with her husband, brother, mother and sister awaiting the traveling horror-on-wheels group. “I love it,” said Myers, who moved to the Valley in March. “I'm really glad to be here and we just group together, go to the pool and that's about it. We do a lot of cooking. We love the freaky people.” Michael Allred was one of those freaky people, dressed “to the nines,” in his zombie outfit. He and his wife clearly were enjoying the opportunity

to be around – with social distancing – other park residents and friends. “We just love this,” said Allred, an
Arkansas native who has lived full time in the Valley for the past two and a half years. “We have parades constantly for Christmas, Halloween, Easter and with COVID going on, having something like this is just so much fun. It's affected everyone. There are no dances and, for example, for Thanksgiving we would all sit in the hall all together and eat, but now you order dinner and come pick it up.”
But, as is the spirit of Winter Texans, there's always a way to find a good time. “We're gonna be doing a drivein theater,” he said. “We'll be in golf carts and socially distance as best we can, but they're always trying to be innovative and come up with new ideas here. It's great.” The walking dead, ghosts, skele-
tons and a great time – what better way than to say Winter Texans have returned? Check out the WTT Website for more pictures

McAllen forging ahead
Hats off to McAllen! - one of the most progressive cities in the Rio Grande Valley. They seem to always have something big and wonderful planned for us to enjoy...from the huge Christmas Parade to the upcoming Fiesta de Palmas, formerly called Palm Fest. Not only is McAllen progressive, but they are also the largest city in Hidalgo County and according to the last census, McAllen is the 22nd most populous city in Texas. McAllen is really fairly young - it began to grow after the railroad came in 2004. By 2011, McAllen was an incorporated city. In 1940, the city took as its motto “The City of Palms”. Actually, the native shrubs and trees were thorny, evergreen Rio Grande ash, cedar elm and honey mesquite mixed with a lot of cactus. Early land promoters saw the possibility and brought palm trees in from all over the world to transplant and transform our sub-tropical area into the tropical paradise of today. That attitude of “making a silk purse out of a sow’s ear” has carried over from the early settlers to McAllen’s leaders and citizens of today. If one were to classify the personality of McAllen - one might say that the city is a dreamer - a BIG dreamer. They dream big and then they work diligently to make that dream come true. That is exactly what they have done as they “reimagined” the Fiesta de Palmas. The reimagined Fiesta de Palmas took some real dreaming and real imagination to organize a virtual festival that had formerly been celebrat-
ed in the traditional way. After months of inactivity, when most other venues have cancelled, McAllen decided to plan a “together again” festival mixing virtual and social distancing. You can attend in person on the first night for $40 which will allow eight people to actually experience the featured live entertainment. That is just $5 per person. Check their Facebook page for more information. This “new normal” event has found new ways to celebrate by combining virtual, social distancing, curbside and drive thru. All activities will be outside on the grounds of the McAllen Convention Center located at 700 Convention Boulevard. Hours for the festival on November 7 are 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. and on November 8 from 12 p.m. – 8 p.m. If you have a hankering for festival food, just drive by and pick up your festival type food at curb side. There will be food trucks from all over the Rio Grande Valley offering delicious local cuisine. The McAllen Rotary Club will have “Beer Boxes” for $35. This will also be a “pick up” offer featuring the best of international beers. The beer box will also include $55 in vouchers to business establishments in McAllen plus a lottery. What a challenge it must have been to plan such an event! What a show of determination and cooperation from the citizens of McAllen to stage such a festival. Thanks, McAllen for forging ahead. You have set an example for all of us. If Plan A doesn’t work - then let’s go to Plan B.
WEATHER From pg. 1
has been really nice lately. It has been perfect for outdoors activities. I hope this becomes the norm for a while because I truly enjoy being outdoors without having to worry about sweating. Again, as we travel back and forth between San Antonio and Mission, we are seeing our Winter visitors making there way down here. This time we saw two Winter Texan vehicles at the Live Oak County Rest Area. We saw another one at the Brooks County Rest Area. We enjoy seeing you coming down here. We are seeing a lot of conversation about entertainment and activities happening in the Valley. As things are opening, more activities are being
held and outdoor activities are becoming the ‘thing.’ Thankfully, the weather has been cooperating so far. WintertainersTM are ready to visit the Valley and put on their shows and we are looking forward to those shows. It’s all going to be different this year, but be rest assured, there will be activities to go to, there will be some fun had. I know many of us are getting tired of being cooped up and any socializing helps the soul – even if we have to wear a mask and take other social distancing precautions. We hope you all stay safe – whether traveling, socializing, or just enjoying the weather. Carina

the late 1970s and has been operating from its current location since 2000. Nature enthusiasts from all across North America and parts of Europe visit the sanctuary. Frontera Audubon houses a Visitors’ Center and the Texas Historic Landmark, the Skaggs House, a Spanish Mediterranean style house built in 1927. The house was built for early Weslaco residents, C.L. “Lester” and Florence R. Skaggs who were bankers and citrus growers. Bebe Skaggs James, daughter of Lester and Florence Skaggs, donated the property to Frontera Audubon in 1992 for conservation and preservation. The park’s main goal is to provide a place for people of all ages and from all places to come and enjoy nature and learn about wildlife, conservation, history and more. It is a constant juggling act, especially these past few months, to use the parks resources to keep the thicket and orchard in good shape, to bring the Skaggs house to a place where it can be optimally utilized, and to provide programming and activities that engage young and old, neighbors and friends from far

away. When the stay-at-home orders took effect in Weslaco, the park had to close their doors to visitors for almost two months. Those two months were at the height of the Spring migration. In June, the park was finally able to open their trails and kept contact at a minimum and have had a steady stream of visitors since. The end of July brought hurricane force winds and caused the park to close the trails again because of all the debris. The park is thankful that there was no permanent damage, just lots of trees to remove and trails to clear. They now have one trail open and are working on keeping the fifteen acres presentable. The birds, butterflies, and dragonflies are abundant at the site. Several visitors visit regularly and have reported interesting sightings such as Mexican Bluewings, Three-striped Dashers, Northern Parulas, and a Black-throated Gray Warbler. The trails in the Thicket and Orchard are ready for walking. Three viewing areas await you on the middle pond and two feeding stations have canopies to give you shade on the sunny days. Both water features bring in good birds daily, and the boardwalk
usually provides something interesting to see. Butterflies and dragonflies are seen all over the property along with the usual lizards, rabbits, and squirrels. Many birds make their home in the thicket behind the visitor’s center. Some birds commonly found at Frontera include Chachalaca, Great Kiskadee, Mockingbird, Clay-colored Thrush, the Black-Crested Titmouse and the elusive Green Jay. Others are rarer. Recent bird visitors include Buff-bellied Hummingbird, Rufous Hummingbird, Northern Cardinal, Broad-Winged Hawk, Black-Throated Grey Warbler, Barn Swallow, Baltimore Oriole, Yellow-Throated Warbler, Cooper’s Hawk, Lesser Yellowlegs, Olive Sparrow and Northern Parula. Frontera keeps a bird board by the entrance to the visitor center to tell visitors what birds to look for as they visit. Due to a recent incentive grant from the Weslaco EDC to finish the rehabilitation of the historic Skaggs House, the park is on their final stretch of this path and should have things completed by 2021.
