The Valley has seen some great weather these past two weeks. So, I took the opportunity to visit parts of Brownsville I have never been to. I visited the Old Cemetery, Historic Brownsville Museum, Stillman House, Fort Brown, Palo Alto Battlefield, and stopped at a few other places to get some pictures. It was so nice outside that if I did get a little warm, See RINA’S RAMBLINGS pg. 2

The South Pole returns to McAllen

Last week the City of McAllen unveiled details of this year’s newly reimagined Christmas celebration in McAllen with the South Pole Illuminated Drive and Theatre Experience. This will transform the McAllen Convention Center District into an enchanting one-mile drive-thru holiday show of millions of dazzling lights and sound, so that the entire McAllen and Rio Grande Valley community can enjoy. The South Pole Illuminated Drive and Theatre Experience will open its holiday door starting on December 1 and continue through the month of December, starting at $10 a ticket per vehicle. Hidalgo presents a Season of Hope The Valley Symphony Orchestra (VSO) continues its fall digital season with "Melody and Rhythm," its next online concert premiering November 20 at 7 p.m. on Facebook. At a time when concerts and in-person events have been postponed because of concerns over public health risks, the Symphony has reinvented its delivery model with a series of specially produced chamber concerts that are presented for all to enjoy, thanks to generous donor and sponsor support. To keep some of Hidalgo’s tradition alive, the City of Hidalgo is excited to announce the launch of the 29th annual Hidalgo Festival of Lights “Season of Hope,” presented by Coca-Cola, as a drive-through experience at the Payne Arena in Hidalgo, Texas starting on Tuesday, Dec. 1. With the global pandemic, the community’s daily living has had to adapt in order to protect the health and safety of those we are closest to. While we all are undergoing these challenging times, the Christmas holidays can offer a beacon of hope, which is why this year’s Festival of Lights will be themed “Season of Hope.” The City of Hidalgo wanted to ensure that peoSee HIDALGO pg. 4

I was easily cooled off with the next breeze. The Stillman House was a welcoming site with its white columns, hardwood floors, outdoor well, and other noticeable architectural delights. Walking through the house was like stepping into the past. I loved how they maintained the older design work and furnishings. I invite you to look at the family tree they have hanging up. I will delve into the history of Brownsville in a future story. I have plenty of its history and photos to share. ***** Another stop I made was to one of our advertisers, Build-A-Burger. I had an A1 burger that had the sauce, grilled onions, and Monterey jack cheese. It was a homemade burger that was too big for my appetite. It was worth the trip to Edinburg for a burger that I knew was going to be fresh. They have a coupon in our Taste of the Valley page – so check them out if you can. ***** We received a call from a concerned Winter Texan last week and I wanted to share her concern with the rest of our readers. As a Canadian Winter Texan, she was able to cross the border with some of her friends

last week. But the trouble came when they tried coming back. She was detained for a number hours. She was initially told she would need to go to Reynosa (she was visiting Progreso) and fly back to Texas. After hours of talking and being questioned, they decided to let her return to the United States. She wanted to make sure our readers know that you need to follow guidelines when crossing the border. They were nice to her, but it might become more difficult for others. Please, if you are going to cross over to Mexico, ask before you go what is needed to get back across, make sure you have what you need. Call Customs, or ask at the bridge, but please make sure you are prepared before you cross. ***** We are heading into the holidays and it is feeling almost like fall here in the Valley. Cities are already reinventing their holiday activities so they can still be held, so they can still entertain you. If you have anything you want to share, anything special you are doing for the holidays – whether it be your park or organization – let me know. Send me a picture and some information to news@wintertexantimes.com.

MCALLEN From pg. 1

“It has been a year of cancelled events, but one thing was for sure: The City of McAllen was NOT going to cancel Christmas,” said Mayor Darling. “I am so happy that we are going to provide this wonderful holiday experience so everyone can experience the magic of Christmas.” Guests will travel through a 280-foot radiant tunnel with a surround-sound serenade of favorite holiday tunes, all in the comfort and safety of their own vehicle. This stateof-the-art visitor experience will take about 25 minutes to drive through and will take guests throughout the McAllen Convention Center District, capping off with Holiday Movies in the Park. Winding through the holiday spectacle, attendees will be surrounded by more than 50 Christmas trees, including a massive 64-foot tree, and millions, yes millions, of lights throughout the hol-

iday and special illuminated displays. No holiday celebration in McAllen would be complete without festival food and beverages, which will be available and will include hot chocolate, s’mores, and funnel cakes. Tickets to South Pole Illuminated Drive and Theatre Experience start at $10 per vehicle. A d d i t i o n a l l y, VIP experiences are also available, which include fast passes and private holiday trains for the entire family. Hours of operation are 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The holiday event will run through the entire month of December. For more information visit www. SouthPoleofTexas.com. Tickets are also available at www.Ticketmaster. com. Please note: all prices are per vehicle, not per person

Brownsville Holiday Village goes virtual

Everyone’s favorite winter wonderland is coming to your home this year. The Holiday Village in Brownsville is excited to present their new Virtual Village. Visitors will soon be able to enjoy the fun-filled, interactive site any time and anywhere. The Virtual Village, premiering on Monday, November 23, will include 31 cottages for visitors to explore. They will also have coloring pages, games and other activities. And, as always, Fritter will arrive on Thanksgiving night and hide in a different cottage each day.

The Virtual Village will be updated throughout the holiday season, so be sure to visit the page often. The course is well-maintained and has some of the prettiest and well-designed holes in the Valley. Oh, did we mention No. 18? Even if we did, it's worth mentioning again. Tierra Santa Golf Club Tony Butler Golf Course A little bit of everything awaits the golfer who checks in to Tony Butler, possibly the most historic course in South Texas. From wide open fairways where you can swing away to some tight shots within a magnificent setting, this municipal is sure to challenge the golfer in many ways. Butler, a PGA champion from Ganado, Texas brought some of the greatest golfers to the Valley for tournaments during the Great Depression. He was known for

his use of the 4-wood, which he would sometimes play entire rounds using only that club. We don't recommend you try that but, if you're in the mood for a super challenge... thing active to do so she took a shot at table tennis. Now, she's playing three to four times a week (probably more when nobody's looking) in the craft building at Victoria Palms RV Park in Donna. “I'm hooked,” said the Michigan native who now lives full time at the park. “I didn't start playing until my first summer here. Because of an illness, I can't do anything outdoors, so I thought I'd give this a shot.” Now, she and Mike Abbott can be found regularly getting more than just a mild workout in, blasting away at the plastic ball in hopes of winning a rally. The sport originated in England, played among the upper-class as an

books stood up along the center of the table as a net and two more books were used as paddles and were used to hit a golf ball. Of course, now there's a net and paddles, covered with various types and thickness of rubber, wood or sandpaper. There are also different styles of play enjoyed by everyone. “I like to stay close to the table,” Easton said. “I can't let his (Abbott's) spins take off and get away from me.” Abbott, of Kansas City, Mo., who made his way to Victoria Palms five years ago via Mississippi, has many years of experience behind him and enjoys several styles, often hitting the ball and having rallies from 2-3 feet beyond the end of the table. Every so

often, you'll also see him drop low to return a shot, known as playing under the table. “I've played my whole life,” Abbott said. “A guy who lived next door to me was a Junior College winner in Oklahoma and he really got me into it. I like hitting my backhand and I have a feel for the net and sometimes I'll play under the table. Your opponent has a harder time picking up the ball when you play that way.” Easton said there are about 2 0 - 2 2 people who regularly play at the park, most of them haven't returned for the upcoming winter season. That, however, hasn't slowed down Easton, Abbott, or the few other players who enjoy a friendly, but sweat building – but intense – rally or two. Abbott and Easton said

they'll play an hour or longer when they arrive. It's because of that time invested that Easton says has made her a better player. “I enjoy when I can beat one of the guys, and it's happening more often,” she said, laughing while still being completely serious. “And he (Abbott) shows no mercy on me.” “Nope,” Abbott replied. “She makes me better and I make her better so that works out fine.” The biggest change COVID-19 has brought to Victoria Palms' table tennis – or ping pong – community has been to remove doubles play and keeping it strictly singles play, to maintain social distancing. They also sanitize the tabletops, the table covers, nets and everyone is required to bring their own equipment. “It takes us about 15 minutes to set it all up and another 15 to take it down,” Easton said. “But we were doing that anyway, now we're just spraying and sanitizing.”

As I perused the jam-packed menu from Los Comales Restaurant at 151 ½ N. Texas Ave. in Mercedes, one item in particular seemed to capture my attention – Poquito de Todo, or A Little of Everything. I usually avoid these types of plates because, while I like a whole lot of different food, there’s usually something that doesn’t quite meet my liking, or when it says A Little, it usually means “A Little Less.” That certainly wasn’t the case in this situation. T h e plate consisted of two enchiladas, Panchos with fajita (every chip was loaded with fajita, cheese and a jalapeno slice), one chalupa, one beef quesadilla, rice and beans. And it covered the plate – completely. What may have been most impressive was how the architects in the kitchen were able to pile so much food on a plate and not turn it into a mismatch of everything where you just dug your fork in and played guess what’s in my next mouthful?

Making safer choices Today is a beautiful day. Even if it is raining, it is still a beautiful day the farmers need the rain, our yards need the rain. And soon the rain will stop, the bright, warming sun will shine down upon us and we can all go outside and enjoy our beautiful world. If it is a foggy day, that too will go away by mid-morning and the sun will shine again. Or perhaps the day will be one of those gorgeous November days from the very beginning. November and December are two of the most enjoyable months of the year. What can be better than Thanksgiving in November and Christmas in December? And we have so much for which to be thankful. First of all, we should be thankful that we have life itself and that we can enjoy the beautiful world in which we live. Then we have our families and

all the love for them and their love for us plus all the memories that we share together. Let us not forget our friends who comfort us when things go wrong and celebrate with us at our small accomplishments. We should also be thankful that we have so many freedoms...the freedom to make choices. Even the pandemic has left us with choices...at least up to a point. But not always...some of the wonderful attractions that we might choose to visit have closed at least until we bring this pandemic under control. Wearing a mask and maintaining social distancing is where we all have a choice. And that is where we all have a choice. We can take care of ourselves and our neighbors by following the recommendations of our local health

authorities and wear that mask and practice social distancing or we can choose not to follow their recommendations. And that is where I have made a choice - I care about myself, I care about you. Therefore, I will see that social distancing is observed on my tours and that includes on the buses and the planes. Consequently, with fewer people on the bus, the price of a tour increases. The U.S. buses that ordinarily seat 56 passengers should be limited to 27 people including the guide and driver. That means only 25 paying passengers. The Mexican buses that are smaller can accommodate only 22 passengers including guide and driver. There are many tour companies and airlines - that have chosen to ignore these attempts to bring the pandemic under control. Therefore, those companies will be able to maintain lower prices. You have a choice. l hope you choose to go the safer way - it is your choice. In the meantime, wherever you may be this Thanksgiving, I hope you enjoy your family and friends. Remmember, we are blessed.
