This time of year always brings a spirit of Thanksgiving, We continue in this spirit even after the holiday of Thanksgiving, well into the Christmas season. My church leaders invited members to give thanks during the week leading up to Thanksgiving. We were invited to share what we were thankful for on social media platforms. You may have noticed a few #GiveThanks tags this past week.
Winter Texan Jammers enjoy reunion at Corn Palace
By David Evans It wasn't winter in Mitchell, South Dakota, the last week in August of this year, but dozens of Winter Texans assembled there to play and sing their favorite country, bluegrass, gospel, and folk tunes at the famous “Corn Palace.” During the six-day event that complements the city's annual “Corn Palace Celebration,” these jammers made their second annual event a resounding success. Two years ago, James Kropenske, a native of Mitchell, decided to consider taking advantage of the Mitchell celebration that historically draws

Brownsville is entrenched in history
By Carina A. Brunson
Growing up in the Valley, in Mission, I knew about some of the history of the region. My grandparents were farmers, and I knew how important that was to the community and I knew snippets of the importance to the Valley’s history. Being a Mission resident, I also knew a lot of the citrus industry and the vital role it played in the community’s history. In 2008, when I worked for the Progress Times and assisted with gathering history on the city for their CenSee BROWNSVILLE pg. 2

tennial Magazine the paper was producing, I learned a more in depth history of the City of Mission and could not believe how much I did not know. This season I am trying to get out in the community and learn about the other cities of the Valley. I decided to start with Brownsville – a city I knew very little about except the little things we include in our Rio Grande Valley Visitors Guide. I knew there were historical buildings and that we have some battlegrounds in the area. It was eye opening though visiting the museums and stepping in those buildings – you see that history in a much different perspective. I can’t believe how much history is in, or how much how much has happened in, this Valley I have called home for most of my life. In a time where many activities and gatherings Palo Alto have been cancelled, we are now given an opportunity to learn about the area we live in. We often don’t take the time to see things around us. We instead look at other places to go and see, instead of our own backyard. We have a rare opportunity to see our community in a different light. I invite you to go on your own journey in your community and see what you can learn. It might make it feel more like home. So here we go to Brownsville… please enjoy this and look for other issues during the season where I tell you some history about some of the other cities in this Gem of a Valley we have. The beginning of Brownsville included the hunting and gathering societies of the Cahuiltecans, Lipan Apaches and Karankawas. The
Spanish did not begin establishing settlements along the Rio Grande until 1746. When the City of Matamoros, Mexico was founded in 1784, it brought more migrants to the area. The Republic of Texas claimed the Rio Grande as its border after winning its independence in 1836. There were many ongoing disputes regarding this boundary, so General Zachary Taylor was sent to establish a base at Point Isabel and to construct a fort across from Matamoros – This has been known as Fort Texas before being named after Major Fort Brown. Two more known battles, together called the Mexican-American War, have been fought in the City of Brownsville. One was at Palo Alto and the other was at Resaca de la Palma. Both areas can be visited today and showcase artifacts from the battles. The battles were fought on May 8 and 9 in 1846. These battles led to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which established the Rio Grande as the border – eventually leading to California, Nevada, Utah Stillman House and parts of other states becoming part of the United States. T h e Brownsville Historical Association has this wonderful fold out map of the City of Brownsville. You can download a version from www.brownsvillehistory.org or get one at one of the museums. I got mine at the Stillman house. On the website you can also download their walkable tours and sync it with Google Maps or other software you might have on your phone. They have six walking tours depending on what areas you want to see. If I had more time, I would have probably gone on a couple of their walking tours. See BROWNSVILLE pg. 9

thousands of folks from the area. Kropenske, who is a 28-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force and worked in law enforcement for his career, started attending music jams in the Rio Grande Valley in 2017. He contacted the mayor of Mitchell and visited with the Corn Palace Director about having a jam there. They decided to give it a try in 2019. With the help of Rex and Joyce from Texan Mobile Park, they contacted several jammers and they all said they would like to participate. So last year’s jam at Mitchell became a reality and “was quite successful for the first year,” James said. And this year, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, it grew to include more jammers from around the country and was enjoyed by all. Plans are to schedule another summer of jamming in Mitchell next year. Winter Texans from Minnesota, Tennessee, South Dakota, Kansas, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Michigan, Missouri and Texas who spend their winter months in the Rio Grande Valley made a jammers reunion and truly enjoyed making music together. At least two dozen jammers from around the country formed the stage band at the Corn Palace. They played a variety of pieces that had folks kicking up their heels on the dance floor. The jammers played each evening from Tuesday through Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Usually for four hours at a time. They also played at the James Valley Community Center Portable rechargeability Recharging case for easy handling and long wearing time

where they were the pre-lunch entertainment. On Saturday they played at the “Back 40 Taphouse and Grill” for nearly two hours to the delight of the listening crowd. Real country music was played on their outdoor stage. Wednesday night at the Corn Palace featured Valley favorites Sherwin and Pam Linton with their Tribute to Johnny Cash. On Friday more Valley favorites, Adam Pope and Monroe Sun Band, did a great show with Rusty Rierson, 2019 Male Vo c a l ist of the Year, and his Forever Young B a n d opening for them. S u n day morning Adam Pope and Rusty pres e n t e d some beautiful gospel music for Cowboy Church at the Corn Palace. From 12-3 p.m. on Sunday, Robert Ferguson taught and called square dancing to enthusiastic participants. And at 3 p.m. Barefoot Becky and the Ivanhoe Dutchmen band presented some lively polka music to the delight of the many polka dancers. Rierson, Ferguson and Rex from Peppermint Palace were available to help James with his emceeing and organizational duties each day. All in all, the jammers appreciated the warm welcome and hospitality that The Corn Palace gave them. They enjoyed the fellowship and music making and are looking forward to the chance to do it again next year. Y'all are invited to join us. We promise a great time for all.

Jean and Steve Fisher are at it again This past week, Olga Papp of Lone Star National Bank, on South Padre Island, was excited to accept a pickup load of grocery items donated by Winter Texans Jean and Steve Fisher of Iowa. The bank is helping with a food drive for the food bank. The donated grocery items will be taken to Pharr where bank employees will continue to volunteer by helping to sort and distribute the food to needy families in the Rio Grande Valley. This is the Fisher’s third year visiting the Valley and each year they have found at least one organization to support. Their first year they donated nearly $5000 of stuffed animals to Sunny Glen Children’s Orphanage. Last year, they donated over $10,000 in Christmas presents, clothes and other items to over 30 children in Cameron County. When asked by the bank manager, Martin Infante, why they were generous with their donation, Jean said it is because they have been blessed and enjoy giving back. When we did a story on them last year, we learned Jean grew up in foster homes and has a connection with how hard it can be this time of the year. Both have worked hard to get where they are today and feel they are blessed with everything they have. They have made the choice to give back like this at least once a year to share their blessing with others. Last year Jean said, they were not in it for the glory, “It is not about the giving or the getting, it is letting them know that someone cares.”
RINA’S RAMBLINGS From pg. 1
It was a week filled with many things to be thankful for and a time to reflect on what we are truly grateful for in our lives. Seeing others that posted their “Give Thanks” made me see even more things in my life that I could be thankful for. It was a very rewarding experience. In December we are always invited to Light the World. Each day we are invited to Share the Light in some way with others. We actually have a calendar that gives us ideas for each day. Yesterday was Giving Tuesday – an idea to volunteer with a charity or nonprofit or donate to one. Today, is Hero Highlight. We are invited to recognize someone that represents
Christlike love. There are many ideas throughout the month that I, and we as a family, try to participate in as we can. Some are easy, some take a little more time. But these things allow us to share with others, spread smiles, and fill our hearts with gratitude. I invite you to be thankful for something this season. Despite the circumstances, there is always something to be thankful for. There are also many ways you can share your love, your gratitude with others. I know it is difficult to get together, to visit friends right now, but we can drop a note off to a neighbor, pick up someone’s paSee RINA’S RAMBLINGS pg. 17

From the Cheap Seats “Golfers” sat in their carts and patiently waited. Wait, these aren’t golfers. “B7,” a voice called out over a speaker. Those waiting went into action, looking down at their “scorecards,” which weren’t scorecards at all — just like they weren’t golfers. This is Golf Cart Bingo at Texas Trails RV Park in Pharr, one of the many modifications that Winter Texan parks activity directors and residents are coming across the Rio Grande Valley to fight back what the COVID-19 pandemic has attempted to cancel. While it may not be in a bingo hall, it’s still bingo - and those in attendance seemed to have as much fun as any other bingo event taking place. Locked and loaded with their bingo cards and markers, the competitors listened intently as Doug Schneider, who looked completely different than the night before when he and his wife took part in the golf cart/Halloween costume party and park parade. “Far from it,” Schneider joked when asked if he was a professional Bingo caller. “In fact, I hate Bingo. I could have every card but one and just need one number and any other number would be called. That’s why I’m on this side and not that side.” They played different type of Bingo games, including X-out, straight line and four corners bingo. The traditional final game is usually blackout where the winner covers their entire card from numbers that are called out. “This is our first one and word of mouth will get it out there,” said Kathy Dewaele, the park’s activity director along with her husband Lou. “The more we get, the bigger the pot will be and that will get more people coming out as well.”
About a dozen carts and their passengers took part in the first Bingo day of the early season. Dewaele said that she’s heard that despite the COVID-19 pandemic the park’s reservations are up. “It’s everywhere,” Dewaele said about COVID-19. “Residents are deciding to come down here where it’s warmer and where they have friends they’ve made for the past 20 or even 30 years.” Dewaele added that she and the park staff are working hard to make sure their residents still have things to do. They are moving their bean-bag toss to the tennis courts, pickleball will only be played on their outdoor courts, and there will be crossword puzzle, Trivial Pursuit competitions and a whole new look to many of the events and activities. “Our job is to come up with activities and think outside the box and keep everyone active and with things to do,” said Dewaele, from Great Falls, Montana. “It has been pretty fun, and a lot of our Wilder Parks are counting on us. We share our stuff with other parks, and we are planning and coming up with new ideas all the time. “I don’t think we’ve turned any ideas down. It has actually been kinda fun coming up with things so everyone can have opportunities to stay active.” On this particular day, it seemed that the Michigan residents competing were running away with the pots - well, maybe driving away is more appropriate. “This is just a lot of fun,” said Marie Almedo, winner of the first pot and a Michigan native. “They just keep coming up with ideas to keep everyone busy and still be able to see our friends here. That’s important for us.”

Thanksgiving golf parade held What is Thanksgiving without a parade? Mission Bell/Tradewinds RV Resort added some holiday flavor to their residents’ Thanksgiving Day with a holiday parade. The parade was led by Park Managers, Scot and Cynthia Swafford with rousing Christmas Band music. They were followed by various golf carts celebrating the holiday season. First prize for decorating was the final entry in the parade with Santa Claus (Joe Wirkus) and the Thanksgiving Turkey (Pat Scott). This entry was constructed by Ron Kooima and Scot Swafford. Candy was distributed by Santa to the enthusiastic park residents. Second prize went to Jim and Judy Sonnetag for their entry decorated for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Third prize went to Anita Harder and Theresa Hoff for their depiction of a smoked turkey. The park’s first Thanksgiving Parade added a joyful introduction to the holiday season, and they are already looking forward to doing it again next year. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas to all!
