I can’t believe the year is almost over. In some ways it seems that it has gone so fast, while at other times it drug out. Yet, like I said, I cannot believe it is coming to an end next week. This year has been a nightmare and a blessing. We have had our ups and downs in all things. We have been blessed being closer to family – although, sometimes, we find ourselves

Christmas Lights shine in South Texas

With social distancing being a huge factor this year, many holiday celebrations are just not the same. With that being said, many cities have made changes to their holiday celebrations to fit the needs of the community and follow state and county guidelines. Some museums also have Christmas displays that might be of interest. Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum has their Christmas Extravaganza every year. This year is no different. The display features creative ways people decorate Christmas trees. Trees range in themes, types, and size depending on the business and organi-

The season of giving

This year has been the year of shopping online, curbside pickup and having things delivered. This, along with other circumstances, has led to a shortage for the Salvation Army. One park in particular, and one resident, has made it a priority to make sure their local Wal-Mart has bell ringers for the Salvation Army Red Kettle. As of ten days before Christmas, The Salvation Army in McAllen finds itself falling behind the red kettle goal for 2020. The annual Red Kettle Campaign is The Salvation Army’s primary fundraiser and raises essential funds to operate programs that make a different in the lives of people yearround in McAllen. Joel Gutierrez as the ghost of Fernandez pays a visit to Ezequiel Codos played by Pedro Garcia. The Pharr Community Theater will present the popular Charles Dickens adaptation, A Tejano Christmas Carol 2019, on the Pharr Community Theater FB page. The two-act play will be screened live and free of charge starting December 20, 2020 at 7:30 p.m. until January 4, 2021. To watch the show, find The Pharr Community Theater FB page and give it a like and you can watch it with your family at home. This version of the Christmas Carol was adapted by PCT Artistic Director Pedro Garcia who also plays Ezequiel Codos, the equivalent to Ebenezer Scrooge. Ramon Flores and the late Cecilio Garcia Camarillo from NM also contributed to the story. Codos is an avarice attorney and water broker living in the RGV, where the story is set. His greed causes the Rio Grande River to practically dry up in the future with dire consequences to the population. Luckily, he’s visited by three ghosts who include La Rielera de la Revolución Mexicana, played by local actor, Armandina Sesin, who by day works as the San Juan Library Director. The other two ghosts appear as Laurence Welk and the Dark One played by Frankie Sharp Hooton and Joel Gutierrez respectively.

The 25 cast members and understudies, including children and adults, are all from the Valley and auditioned back in the fall of 2019, with eight weeks of rehearsals and two weeks of performances in Christmas of 2019. The play, now in its fourth consecutive year, could not be recast, rehearsed or refreshed this year due to Covid 19, but this video production is sure to bring you lots of smiles, spirit and perhaps a few tears. If you are familiar with the original Dickens story, then you know that the miser scrooge character has a change of heart and begins to see the light at the end of the tunnel. This full production, predominately in English, will be complete with beginning and ending credits to all those who participated in putting it together. The video tape was produced by Christopher Cabello and the play was directed by Seres Jaime Magaña. The stage manager was Claudia Jimenez and Robert Longoria served as technical director. (see the remaining credits at the end of the play) The Pharr Community Theater was established in 2008 by Drs. Elva and Keith Michael and Pedro Garcia and is See TEJANO pg. 8

IMAS ‘Guided by Curiosity’ exhibit open

The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) presents “Guided by Curiosity,” an exhibition featuring items from the museum’s permanent collection that will pique the viewer’s interest and fuel the imagination. It will be on exhibit now through March 6, 2021. “Guided by Curiosity” is the result of four exhibitions curated by members of the museum’s education staff that debuted online earlier this year as

individual virtual exhibits. At a time when most museums are focusing their efforts on putting more content online, IMAS saw the popularity of these virtual exhibitions as a compelling reason to “buck the trend” by bringing the works of art together in the gallery as “Guided by Curiosity.” The four curators and IMAS educators, Lisa Moreno, Veronica Cortez, Yelitza Garcia and Valerie Escamilla, discovered objects in the museum’s

permanent collection that sparked their curiosity in subject matters they were interested in and wished to explore. The range of subjects will allow patrons to see how much is known about bird behavior from the methods of early naturists to document them through realistic art all the way to the in-

triguing and turbulent influence Spanish colonization had on the artistic and religious practices of the peoples of Mexico though pottery, textiles, and iconography. Visit theimasonline.org for more information and to view the four individual virtual exhibits. IMAS is located at 1900 W. Nolana. Call (956) 6812800 for information.

Transplant tips to establish fruit trees

By Adam Russell, TAMU Establishing fruit trees in Texas takes some effort, but these time-tested tips from a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert can guide the way from transplant to production. Peaches are the most universally planted fruit tree in Texas. When it comes to fruit trees, Larry Stein, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension fruit specialist, Uvalde, said to plant in late December through February. The key is that trees be totally dormant at planting. Planting trees in early winter will help them establish some root growth before they break dormancy in the spring, Stein said. That initial root growth can make a big difference during harsh summer conditions. “When people plant their fruit trees in the early spring, they may struggle because they haven’t initiated good root growth to help them absorb moisture and nutrients during a stressful summer,” he said. Picking the right tree Picking the right tree and tree variety are important decisions when transplanting fruit trees. Peaches are the most universally planted fruit tree in Texas, Stein said. Apples are hard to grow in Texas, and pears are the easiest. “I suggest using the Aggie horticulture fruit site, when choosing varieties,” he said. “It has comprehensive fact sheets on different crops and gives variety recommendations based on locations.”

Once you’ve narrowed the options, visit a reputable tree nursery, and choose a medium-sized tree – 3-5 feet tall – so the recommended cutback at planting is less severe, Stein said. Inspect the tree for injury or signs of stress, he said. Check for gum coming out of the tree, any injuries to the tree’s cambium layer or other issues like crown gall, Stein said. Cut the tree’s roots to make sure they are a healthy white, and look for nodules, which could be root rot nematodes. Make sure the roots are not dry or wrapped around the tree’s base, which can lead to root girdling. “If you find damage once you get it home or discover it’s irreversibly root bound or has other potential issues, take it back,” he said. “Don’t accept a subpar tree.” Stein said he prefers planting bare root fruit trees rather than container trees. “They’re less expensive and will grow better,” he said. “The challenge is that bare-root trees are getting harder to find.” Where and how to plant Soil that does not drain well can become a problem for fruit trees, Stein said. So low spots or areas that stay saturated easily are not good transplant locations. “You don’t want a spot where water ponds,” he said. “That can drown the tree.” See ESTABLISH pg. 14

feature sombreros, zarapes and flowers. There are also more traditional trees with white lights and ornaments. There was a small tree decorated with sun hats and flowers, and another with historic photos of the area. Some of the trees are made of wood displays, while another included decorations on the wall. The exhibit runs through December 31. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. It is located at 2425 Boxwood St. For more information call (956) 216-4901. Admission is free; donations accepted. Hidalgo Festival of Lights The Christmas season is not complete without a trip to the Hidalgo Festival of Lights, but, as most things did this year, this event has changed a bit for this season. Hidalgo Festival of Lights presents “Season of Hope” with a drivethrough experience at the Payne Arena in Hidalgo. The experience runs through December 30. The event features a two-mile

drive-through attraction with millions of lights, castles, tunnels and hundreds of illuminated displays. Santa’s magic portal, a 600-foot tunnel, will teleport guests from a butterfly garden to the Land of Make Believe. Christmas Land will be highlighted with a 40-foot Christmas tree and 16-foot Santa boots. Santa will make an appearance on occasion. Guests can also purchase curbside food, snacks and refreshments.

Tickets start at $20 per vehicle, plus applicable fees, and include a fourpack of 20 oz. Coca-Cola. Guests can purchase a Dash Pass for $40 and skip the lines. just wanting to get out of the house. We have learned new things about ourselves, about others, our neighbor’s names, and more. This year has definitely given us the opportunity to reflect on the important things.

My family has had more game nights, more meals together. Our youngest (our son) is learning to cook and our third daughter is learning to drive. We have started some long-awaited home improvement projects and spent more time enjoying the company of our pets. Most of all, we have been able to see the little blessings and miracles that come into our lives, sometimes daily, that we did not see before. We have been able to connect with each other and friends in different ways. We have been able to read more. We have been able to give more effort to the little things – a phone call, a text, a special message to someone. We have seen the hope and the tears, we have seen the light in others and ourselves. With the Light the World campaign ending soon, I do hope that each of us can still find a way to light the world, to light up someone’s life, to be a light unto others. It only takes small things to show you

care, to share a little something, to reach out. This Christmas, I invite you to find what you love about your community and share it with others. Find something you love about someone else and let them know. Share your gifts and talents with others. “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John 8:12. I invite you to find your light and share it with others this holiday season and through the year. ******** What is Christmas without Christmas lights. I do think people have had more time to put up lights this year as is evident with just driving through a neighborhood or two. I know where we live, it seems brighter than in year’s past. We, unfortunately, did not have time to put up ours, but we have enjoyed driving around and enjoying others. I invite you to drive around your neighborhood and see what lights are lighting up close by. Enjoy the company and the season with each other, listen to some music, do some social distanced caroling. Find and share joy this holiday. Merry Christmas to you all!

It did not take long for me to reach my comfort zone soon after I stepped into El Mirador restaurant located at 105 W. Tyler in Harlingen. The service both started and ended with a smile and the food just made the smile grow larger, along with my satisfied stomach. I started with some chips and salsa, but the difference here was that there were five salsas to choose from, all ranges of heat, but none so hot that you could not distinguish the flavors. After mixing and matching salsas with chips and some queso flameado, melted cheese with crumbled chorizo on top, my wonderful server Marcela brought out my main dish, one she recommended – the molcajete dish with fajita and shrimp. Molcajete is usually a stone bowl used with a tejolote to grind up a variety of food products. My order was delivered to me in the traditional stone bowl, angrily sizzling up a storm and smelling amazingly delicious – and fiery hot, if something can actually smell that way. When I talk about hot in this case, I mean in terms of temperature. The bowl, which also had a nice amount of grilled onions at the bottom, also had three pieces of cheese that started inside the bowl and stretched out to the top edges. Sitting on top was a beautiful green half avocado. Marcela brought me some flour and corn tortillas and I never got to the flour, the homemade corn ones just hypnotizing me as I scooped out the mixture inside the molcajete and, for the first taco at least, decided to not add any of the wonderful salsas.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

The first bite sent me back to my married days to a woman from Monterrey, Mexico. We would go visit my in-laws and much of the time was celebrating, playing golf, and tantalizing my taste buds with so many different flavors. This was me back during those wonderful days in Monterrey. After I was full – like full full – Marcela bagged up the remaining food, added some chips and salsas and sent me on my way. I stopped to pay and tell the owner, Jose Elias Alvarez Mata, how much I enjoyed this visit and I thought for sure I would be able to finish all my food. He looked, chuckled, and said matter of factly “Yeah, you couldn't.” It was not a question, but a statement that said, “you're not the only one.” We then talked about the amazing variety of flavors and, while the molcajete was bubbling like the top of a volcano, it's spicy heat was more than manageable, leaving your taste buds working to be tantalized with the mega-flavors. He responded that they try to make everything as authentic as possible while not making their food too spicy for customers. However, he said, “If they want something spicy or hotter, we'll certainly accommodate them.” Living in McAllen, rarely would I go to Harlingen just for a meal. El Mirador changed my perspective, however, and I will definitely return to try different items from a menu loaded with a wide spectrum of choices, from breakfast to lunch and dinner. In fact, I see myself going back there before the end of the year. It was that good.

Stein said soil berms can be built up about 18 to 24 inches on which to plant the trees to keep water at bay. Bare root trees establish better, but they can be difficult to find because most tree nurseries stock container trees. Low spots, even if they drain well are not recommended because cold air settles there, Stein said. The tree’s lo-

cation related to the property layout is another consideration. Stein recommends placing the tree on the north side of the property, so it stays cold during dormancy and stays dormant longer. Plant fruit trees in an area where it will avoid late-day sun which can contribute to earlier bud breaks. “We want the tree to stay dormant

as long as possible to avoid tree or fruit damage from any potential latespring freezes,” he said. Before planting, knock off the soil around the tree’s roots, which in container trees typically includes peat moss and perlite or a light mix. Bare root trees will not have any soil around the roots. Inspect the roots and cut them back if they are wrapped around the root ball to prevent the tree from becoming rootbound. Dig a hole the size of the root system, typically 12-18 inches, Stein said. Dig it deep enough to plant the tree so that its root collar – the distinct line where the stem meets the root ball – is level with the ground. “There is a distinct color change at the root collar,” he said. “You don’t want it to be any deeper than that.” Fill in the hole with the original soil, Stein said. Water the tree well to settle the soil around the roots, and then cut the tree back hard. Cut pecan trees back to 42 inches with all side branches removed to the stem. Fruit trees should be cut back to 18-24 inches and all limbs cut back to the stem. “It goes against some recommendations, but the reduced root system and the cut back will force the tree to go into growth mode,” he said.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

Weed- and grass-free zone Stein recommends clearing weeds and grass from around the fruit trees for at least the first five years. This reduces competition for water and nutrients critical for the tree’s development. Kill out or manually remove weeds and grass within a 2-3-foot diameter circle around the tree, he said. “Use glyphosate or another herbicide that will kill all grasses and broadleaf weeds to the root,” he said. “It doesn’t matter how you do it. But you want bare soil around the tree to cut down competition for the tree.” Stein said grow tubes or aluminum foil could be used to keep the herbicide off the tree’s trunk when chemicals are applied. After the first year, mulch can be added within the circle to help weed control. Don’t kill it with kindness After proper transplanting, cutback and weed eradication, it’s important to leave the tree alone until the tree starts to actively grow, Stein said. “It’s important to just let the tree do its thing. Most people kill trees with kindness at that point,” he said. “Watering is probably the No. 1 cause of death. Trees don’t need much water See ESTABLISH pg. 17

Christmas traditions

Although there have been some adjustments made due to the pandemic, the Rio Grande Valley has not forgotten Christmas and the reason for the celebration. Many churches have been unable to celebrate with their usual posadas held on church properties. Instead, the churches are encouraging people to celebrate within their own families and neighborhoods. For those of you new to South Texas, a posada is the enactment of Mary and Joseph seeking a place for the Christ child to be born. Special songs requesting lodging are sung as the group moves from house to house. The most beautiful posada that I have ever witnessed was in San Miguel de

Allende, Mexico. A young girl dressed as Mary was actually riding on a donkey that was being led by a young boy representing Joseph. As they moved from house to house asking for a place to stay, they continued to be denied until finally they reached the hotel where I was staying with my group. There the inn keeper answered their request, and the party began. They had cookies and hot chocolate and of course, a pinata filled with all kinds of candies for the youngsters. If you should be among the lucky ones asked to participate in a posada, be sure to accept the honor. I guarantee you will never regret it. The pandemic has brought about

some other changes in the way we celebrate the holidays. In order to respect the recommendations of the CDC, many cities have changed their Christmas celebrations. Where in years before you could walk through the light displays, now it is drive through only. The Hidalgo Festival of Lights moved from the Hidalgo City Hall to the Payne Arena with a drive through display. The most recent addition to a drive through display can be found at the H.E.B. Park in Edinburg located at 1616 S. Raul Longoria Rd. Entry is free. The lights are on from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. and will be available for you to view until January 2, 2021. This is Edinburg’s first Annual Light Display where thousands of twinkly lights welcome you to a mile-long themed entertainment. The city does ask that you observe the organized flow of traffic to avoid any traffic jams. A few traditions have not changed regardless of where you are. Since I grew up in the South, one of our Southern traditions was to have blackeyed peas on New Year’s Day. If you eat black-eyed peas on January 1,

they say you will be guaranteed good luck all year. I firmly believe this is a Southern tradition for once I asked someone from the East Coast if they had eaten their black-eyed peas for good luck. They looked at me in bewilderment and asked, “What's that?” If you have never eaten black-eyed peas, try the canned ones with Bush being my favorite brand to buy. Let us make you a little more Southern - or maybe a little more Texan and have you bake a pan of cornbread to go with those peas. While you are getting your meal ready for January l, remember your positive New Year's resolution!!! No more negatives in 2021. Let us make it a positive year. If you are still having trouble next week with coming up with a unique resolution all your own, I will share with you my resolution which you can feel free to adopt as your own if you wish. Wherever you are and whatever you are doing during this wonderful time of the year, may you, your family and your loved ones have a Blessed Season.

“Let us make it a positive year.”

while inactive. They can go 4-6 weeks without water when dormant, and rain will usually take care of that.” When the tree begins actively growing, keep it well-watered – typically once a week with 1 inch of water depending on soil type, Stein said. “When the tree is first planted, the water needs to be placed right around the tree,” he said. “As the tree grows, the roots move away from the tree. We think the best roots start at the canopy edge or drip line and go out about one and a half times the height of the tree.” Fertilize, fertilize, fertilize In May, after the tree shows 8-10 inches of growth, fertilize it with a cup of ammonium sulphate with 21% nitrogen. Organic 3% fertilizer can be used but apply 7 cups to reach the 21% nitrogen requirement. Water the fertilizer in 12-18 inches from the trunk of the tree, he said. “The soil berm and weed-free zone can be useful to let you know where to spread the fertilizer,” he said. “You might want to put the fertilizer outside the berm to make sure it’s not too

close to the trunk.” Continue to water and weed around the tree and ramp up the fertilization regimen in year two with a cup of fertilizer in March, April, May and June, Stein said. In year three, double the fertilizer regimen with 2 cups of ammonium sulphate in those months to push the tree’s growth. “You will be amazed at the tree you can grow in three years,” he said. Provide a half pound of 21% fertilizer per inch of trunk diameter at bud break in subsequent years for the life of the tree, Stein said. Give the tree another half-pound of fertilizer in May if it is showing a fruit crop. Do not apply the second round of fertilizer if the tree is not showing fruit. “Those are really the recommendations for the life of the tree,” he said. “There are variety-specific training and pruning regimens we recommend in the fact sheets, and you’ll need to be aware of potential seasonal disease and pest issues, but that is a good start to well-established fruit trees in Texas.”
