Another year is closing, and a new one is beginning. This year has been so different and has given all of us a new perspective on what is important. It has taught me to be thankful for the little things, the little blessings, the little miracles. It has showed me how much a simple smile, text or phone call can have such a huge impact. I am hoping the with a new year comes new possibilities, less anxiety, and that we can continue to find the small things that bring us, and others, joy. For New Year’s, I do not really make resolutions. I usually do not keep them, so I try not to make any. All I can say is that I hope to continue finding those little things. I hope to find the joy that is around me every day. To make the time to reach out and help others find their happy as well. ******** I have enjoyed getting out and wandering the Valley, finding the story, learning the history of this Gem we have in our own backyard. It is amazing how much history can be found around us. Sometimes I get to see more when I just drive around, instead of knowing a destination – or See RINA’S RAMBLINGS pg. 16 INDEX Parks Calendar “On the Road” Column Events Calendar Taste of the Valley Business Guide Classifieds

Mission: Founded on Faith and Agriculture
From Mission’s humble start as a mission with a small chapel, the city has grown to include several churches that have been around now since its inception as a city. The City of Mission was practically a dry wasteland area that missionaries came upon over 100 years ago. It included large farms and ranches that covered the area. Some communities had as few as two to three families, where others had as many as 150 people. It was in late 1849 that the first three Oblate Fathers answered a call to serve the Rio Grande Valley. They arrived in Port Isabel on December 3rd. They made their trek from the port, through a young City of Brownsville, before making their way along the Rio Grande River. Softball league starts next week
The Senior Texan Slow Pitch Fun Softball League is preparing to play for the 2021 season. They are looking for players over 55 to add to their teams. There are two leagues to join. Playing begins on January 4 and 5. One league is designed for top-ability players, A League. It serves as an option for players who want to keep their competitive juices flowing. The other league, the B League, is more recreational and is for adults of intermediate ability. These players play because they love the game, friend-
ship, and exercise. The B League will be meeting on Mondays and Wednesdays. The A League will be meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Play time will begin at 9 a.m. There will be no charge to play during the months of January and February. They hope to have free shirts available for new players. For more information, call Fred at (956) 897-6961 or Ed at (956) 5812254.

Progreso Bridge upgrades
Progreso International Bridge Director Marga Lopez recently announced the ribbon cutting of the Pedestrian Inspection Lobby. “We have been busy during this pandemic; we took advantage of this slower than normal time to remodel and double the size of the pedestrian processing area,” said Lopez The expansion provides U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) the much-needed additional capacity to process the 1.2 million visitors that cross the U.S./Mexico border through Progreso/Nuevo Progreso every year. Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas was designated one of the top spots for medical tourism in the Annual Medical Tourism Congress in Cozumel. The new addition includes six inspection stations with the latest technology of facial recognition software that will speed up the process. “We wanted to provide our visitors with a state-of-the-art facility that resembles more an airport facility at major hubs like Houston or Dallas. Coordinating with U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) and CBP, we made some major improvements to the entrances, restrooms and the inspection booths,” added Lopez. Walking through the facilities, tourists will find ceiling mounted televisions providing information, Saltillo tile flooring and artistic tile accents on the walls. The facility’s upgrade to six pedestrian lanes will allow for the facilitation of travelers with valid Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) documents to include a passport issued by the U.S. government, a passport card, a valid trusted traveler program card (FAST, NEXUS, or SENTRI) or an Enhanced state Driv-
er's License (EDL) through the Ready Lanes. Separate processing lines will still be available for those with driver’s licenses and/or birth certificates. “I am excited with the improvements made to the pedestrian walkway; it’s more spacious and will allow for us to continue to utilize state-ofthe-art technology to speed up the verification process for our travelers,” said Walter W. Weaver, Progreso Port of Entry, Port Director. “The Port of Progreso processed over 1.2 million travelers last year and we expect to see continual growth in the years to come.” Bridge Consultant, Ernesto S. Silva added, “This is phase two of a fourphase bridge expansion. We finished expanding concrete roads for the upcoming commercial expansion and now the pedestrian lobby expansion. We are almost completed installing the utilities to an expanded Import dock and a new Export dock that will be constructed first quarter in 2021. Once we finish with all the improvements this Port of Entry will be a totally new POE, with no commercial traffic on the passenger vehicle bridge, nor in downtown Nuevo Progreso.” The project, constructed by M-5 Texas Enterprises, was a $500,000 investment by the Progreso Bridge Company. The Bridge Company is one of two privately-owned bridges in the Rio Grande Valley and owned by the Sparks family. “This project had been discussed for many years and our family wanted to improve the crossing experience for our international tourists. We want all our customers to be happy and spread the word what a great place it is to cross and return from Mexico. See BRIDGE pg. 17

SPI kicks off New Year
South Padre Island, TX -- South Padre Island, The Fireworks Capital of Texas, is kicking off the New Year with a bayside fireworks display on Thursday, December 31, at 9 p.m. Visible from across the Island and coastal Port Isabel, the Island’s fireworks show will kick off the new year with a bang. “For the New Year, the City of South Padre Island
has opted for a socially-distant way to celebrate with a fireworks show over the bay and along the Entertainment District,” said South Padre Island CVB Director Ed Caum. “As important as kicking off the New Year is, so is kicking 2020 to the curb,” Caum quipped. The soundtrack to the fireworks display will also be broadcasted on PYRO Radio 91.1 FM for visitors who would like to tune in from the comfort of their vehicles. The Island’s establishments are

requiring masks in any place where social distancing may be a challenge. “We expect the Island to be busy, safe, and a welcome relief for our visitors who are ready for a celebration,” said Caum. “With our great wide-open beaches and opportunities for outdoor activity, South Padre Island is a great place to safely celebrate the New Year with a little coastal distancing.” For more information on events and family-friendly activities on South Padre Island, visit www.sopadre.com.

The Food Bank RGV thanks you for considering a donation towards this first of its kind life changing program. Your generous gift will provide life sustaining support to families and those in the RGV battling food insecurity during the holidays and this critical time due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. During the holiday season, the Food Bank RGV launched a new initiative allowing the general public to give directly in order to “Adopt a Family” and sponsor a family’s meals for an entire month or for the full year. During the unpredictable and unprecedented health and financial crisis of COVID-19, the Food Bank RGV has seen the need for emergency food assistance surge seven-fold year over year and the number of people accessing support from the food bank and 275 charity partners rise to the highest levels ever. The good news, because of the generosity and kindness of Food Bank RGV supporters, partners, and friends, the food bank has been able to continue clearing the lines and closing the gap. The Food Bank RGV has realized innovative solutions are the key to helping continue to provide food for these most in need in this increasingly uncertain time. When a donor contributes to the “Adopt a Family” initiative, a registered family in the RGV is able to visit the food bank to pick up food to sustain them for either 30 days or 12 months. Donors are encouraged to send a note or card to be included with food that families and individuals will be receiving. To maintain confidentiality, no direct family contact or personal information will be allowed or shared. Adopting a family is extremely easy and cost effective, because .98 cents of every dollar goes directly to feeding people. The Food Bank RGV
can leverage every dollar for a return of five meals. For a donation of just $10 a month, a 30-day supply of food for a food insecure individual within a family in the RGV will be provided. A donation of $40 will help feed a family of four for an entire month and for the greater impact of all, $480 will provide a food insecure family with nourishment and sustenance for one full year. Prior to the pandemic, the food bank served an average of 753 clients a week, but now assists as many as 7,383 clients per week through the on-site Drive-Thru Emergency Pantries (DTEP). Across the network, up to 141,381 clients are now being served weekly, up from 64,000 people a week, prior to March 1, 2020. To adopt a family, contact Philip Farias, Manager of Corporate Engagement and Special events, at (956) 904-4513 or by email at pfarias@ foodbankrgv.com You may visit www.foodbankrgv.com to make an online donation anytime. About the Food Bank RGV: The Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley, Inc. was incorporated in 1986 and has grown to be the largest charity in south Texas based on clients served. In fiscal year 2019, over 40 million pounds of food and fresh produce were distributed to Cameron, Hidalgo, and Willacy counties and the Feeding America network of food banks. Up to 146,000 people in the Valley experience food insecurity.

Pets can help resolutions stick
It’s that time of year again when many of us start making New Year’s resolutions. After a tumultuous 2020, it may be more imperative than ever to strive for physical, mental, and emotional balance. The good news is that there is someone who might be able to help you reach those goals who’s closer than you think: your dog or cat. That’s right, Fido and Fluffy can provide you with the motivation to get 2021 started on the right track. Best Friends Animal Society offers five ways your pets can be the best resolution buddies. Keeping in mind masks, leash laws, and social distancing should be observed whenever you are in public. It is also wise to research hours of operation for any destination before you visit. Start Moving Dogs love to get exercise and do it with such enthusiasm, they are sure to make you smile as you head out the door. Walking at a vigorous pace for just 30 minutes, five times a week can provide the moderately intensive cardiovascular exercise most physicians recommend. If you and your dog are not quite ready to hit that goal now, try a 10-minute walk at your own pace and boost your time by five-minute
increments each week. Some cats even like to go for walks on a leash and harness or in a stroller. If you are not sure how your own kitty would feel about it, do some research online to find the safest ways to introduce walking or strolling into your routine. Ease stress Of course, pets are adorable to look at and fun to hang out with...it turns out they are also good for you. As research has shown, spending quality time with pets can lessen anxiety, lower blood pressure, and bolster your immune system—health benefits many of us can use. How can you make the most of this natural stress relief? A daily fifteen-minute break with your cat or dog to meditate is a great start. Sit with your pet in a quiet, comfortable place, focus on being present, breathing deeply, and stroking your pet’s fur. Another option is to break out a yoga mat and do some poses with your cat or dog, which will not only ease stress, but also provides a gentle workout. Eat better Did your eating habits change in 2020? This year swap out fatty, sweet, or salty treats and start sharing some See PETS pg. 6
Correction
Our recent golf course directory series and the results of our Winter Texans’ Golf Course Favorites ballot generated some feedback asking us to correct some information. In our November 4, 2020 issue we listed Karen Pike as the Golf Pro at Long Island Village Golf Course. Karen Pike is the General Manager at Long Island Village and not the Golf Pro. Long Island Village does not have a golf pro on staff. We in no way meant to diminish Pike’s role at Long Island Village nor to mis-represent her or the golf course. In our December 16, 2020 issue we published the results of the Winter Texans’ Golf Course Favorites ballot. The ballot asked for participants
to write in the name of their favorite Golf Pro and the course name. Grant Lewis, a resident owner at Long Island Village, garnered enough writein votes to tie for first place with Stuart Place’s Marilyn Anderson in this category. We wish to reiterate that Long Island Village Golf Course does not have a golf pro on staff and clarify that Lewis does not work for Long Island Village golf course. This does not change the fact that Lewis received enough write-in votes to give Long Island Village Golf Course the win (tied), and while Lewis is not the official golf pro we still congratulate him on the honorary recognition he has received in result of the ballot.

good-for-you snacks with your pet. Dogs can eat raw sunflower or pumpkin seeds, plus produce like watermelon, blackberries, cranberries, blueberries, bananas, apple slices, and baby carrots (but no grapes or raisins, which can be toxic). Cats can get in on the fun, too. Felines can enjoy fish like salmon or mackerel, meats like plain boiled chicken, and even a bit of cheese or egg. Just keep in mind that only 10 percent of a pet’s daily calories should come from treats. Your veterinarian can confirm which foods are appropriate for your pet. Venture Out If you have been stuck at home
and cannot take one more day staring at four walls, leash up your dog (or a travel loving cat, if you’ve got one) and hit
the road for a day trip. Many beaches, state parks, and local landmarks are still open for sightseeing, so find a spot that is sure to boost you and your pet’s spirits. Be Social Socializing may seem oxymoronic during COVID-19, but there is a way to be amongst others safely. Get out-
side with your dog. They are natural ice breakers, and you are sure to meet like-minded people who want to share about their own pets. A game of fetch or frisbee at the local park can also be a fun. Wait...what? You don’t have a pet? Well, there is no better time than the new year to adopt a new best friend. By adopting, not only will you be saving a life, you will get a great deal, as most pets are also fixed, vaccinated, micro-chipped and ready to go home for just one low fee. To get started, visit www.bestfriends.org and find a local shelter or rescue where your perfect pet is waiting. Some Rio Grande Valley shelters to call include Palm Valley Animal Shelter in Edinburg, Cameron County Animal Shelter in San Benito, Forgotten Friends Texas Rescue RGV in Mission, Ana’s Safe Haven Rescue, Texas Pet Rescue in Brownsville, Friends of Animal Rescue on South Padre Island, and so many more can be found with a simple google or map search.

Texas A&M Forest Service launches TreeMD application
COLLEGE STATION, Texas —Texas
A&M Forest Service launched an application today to help users quickly identify the root of a tree’s problem, whether it be caused by insects, diseases or other factors. The TreeMD application is part of the Texas Forest Information Portal, and its main feature is a diagnosis tool which allows users to quickly find re-
sults from TreeMD’s vast database. Users are prompted to enter the tree species, prominent symptoms exhibited or even the specific part of the tree that is being affected to help diagnose the problem. In the event there are still questions on the actual cause, users can upload pictures and connect with a professional. “TreeMD was created when we

saw a need to provide a rapid identification process of tree issues for landowners, homeowners and natural resource service providers,” said Sam Rhodes, Texas A&M Forest Service Staff Forester. Users can filter lists of suspected causes by potential health problems. Once a pest or environmental factor has been selected, additional information, images and possible treatment options are provided by the user-friendly application. “I love it,” said Sean Jacobson, City of Denton Planner. “I was able to easily find an answer within roughly one minute.” W h i l e TreeMD is a useful tool in investigating potential tree problems, it is not intended to be a substitute for the recommendations and management planning of a professional service provider. “One of the most frequent calls we get in the office is from landowners

meet – to be level with the ground. “You don’t want too deep or too shallow,” he said. “The tree’s root collar should be no more than an inch below the soil when planted, but you also don’t want roots to be exposed to the open air.” Do not pull the tree by the stem when removing it from a container because of potential damage to the cambium layer, Taylor said. Lay the container on its side, the push on its sides as you rotate to loosen the soil before carefully removing the pot from the tree. Make sure the roots are ready to explore new soil and not wrapped around each other or pointing upward, he said. “It’s OK to take a sharp knife and gently cut from top of root ball to bottom in several locations so that they are able to grow directly outward,” he said. “You can gently finagle the roots and move them around where they are facing outward, away from the trunk. Having them pointing straight out is
the key.” However, you must limit root exposure to open air, he said. Prolonged exposure to air can kill the tender young roots. Root direction is crucial, Taylor said. Trees planted with bounded roots are likely to decline rapidly around 10-15 years because as the bounded roots and trunk grow in girth, they girdle and strangle the cambium layer if it survives the planting. Taylor said you can test for root binding and girdling in young trees already planted by rocking the tree back and forth. If the base of the tree moves, the roots have not explored the soil and could be replanted in some cases. Once the tree is in place, backfill the hole carefully with good quality soil, he said. Mix in some sand if the soil removed is heavy with clay. This will help the roots explore. Do not use mulch in the soil mix because it contains elements limiting root growth.

Dear Traveler,
In accordance with the recommendations of the CDC, we will be observing social distanceing on all of our tours. Therefore the number of passengers on buses, trains and planes will be reduced. Consequently, tour prices have increased in order to cover the expenses. Help us to win our battle against this pandemic by wearing a mask and observing the social distancing. Mulch can be used on the surface, but only a thin layer to minimize weeds and the need to use string trimmers near it. “I don’t use mulch, but a little on top doesn’t hurt,” Taylor said. “It can help cut down on grass and weeds growing around the tree, which can prevent it from being killed by string trimmers. I always caution people about using a string trimmer around young trees with very thin bark because irreparable damage can happen quickly.” Watering newly transplanted shade trees Taylor said watering correctly is the next critical aspect of helping the transplanted tree establish. The key to remember is water to promote root expansion. “There’s a lot of advice to use a watering can or water hose at the base of the tree or to create a mulch or soil berm around the perimeter of the tree to hold moisture,” he said. “But constant watering at the base of the tree prevents roots from seeking moisture in new soil, and the berm filled with water could drown the roots or cause fungal diseases and root rot.” Taylor suggests watering with a soaker hose just beyond the root ball to begin. At each watering, run the soaker hose until moisture reaches 10-15 inches into the soil. No water should run off the soil. If it does then your soaker hose is on too high. “Sprinklers do very little for trees,” he said. “Trees need the water to reach deeper, so a separate watering regimen is needed. Block the sprinkler water from reaching the tree because there can be fungal problems from sprinkler water getting on the leaves. Keep supplemental water off of the tree.” Watering frequency will depend on rainfall and temperatures, Taylor said. Newly planted trees, with their small root system, will need watering every three to four days for the first summer. Sandy soils may need more frequent watering than loamy or clay soils. It’s best to water in the early evening to help trees recover from the heavy transpiration demands during the day, he said. Fertilizer is a ‘no-no’ Taylor said newly planted trees should not be fertilized. Fertilizer will artificially force the tree to elongate and grow its tips beyond its grow potential form. Fertilizing can help fortify healthy trees to resist decline from a tough spring or early summer, he said, but
WINTER TEXAN TIMES
fertilizers are not necessary for newly planted trees. “Fertilizing newly planted trees, or any tree that is under stress, whether it’s disease or pests or the stress of transplanting, is not good,” he said. “You don’t want the tree to use carbohydrate reserves to grow. Instead, the tree needs those reserves to produce defensive compounds and respond to stress.” Staking a tree for support Most smaller transplants won’t need supports to keep them stable, but larger trees or a tall tree replanted to fix root-binding may need stakes, Taylor said. Taylor said to be careful when staking trees for support. Use straps designed for the task or anything that creates a large surface area to distribute the pressure along the stem to protect the cambium. Also, make sure the support points are not wrapped too tightly around the tree. “You can find tie points for sale, but I’ve seen people use items around the house like old rubber hoses, which are good,” he said. “You want something that won’t cut into the cambium and that can be adjusted.” An eyebolt can also be screwed into the stem of the tree at the proper height to provide support in multiple directions, he said. “An eyebolt creates one little wound rather than the risks associated with wrapping something around the
tree,” he said. “Once the tree stabilizes, you can remove it and the tree will respond quickly and fill the hole.”
Taylor does not recommend using the eye-bolt method in areas with known cases of oak wilt because the disease enters through open wounds. Go native Taylor said tree choice is a matter of preference, but he recommends planting species native to the region. “Native species perform better than out-of-place, non-native trees,” he said. “Native species like black gum and swamp chestnut oak have the same, desired properties people want like fall color and shade but are often much hardier and resistant to environmental stressors than their non-native options.” Taylor said Texas A&M Forest Service has several web applications that provide good tree species options and recommendations for specific Texas regions and how to care for trees, including managing pests and diseases.

ON THE ROAD with Jo Liston
Happy New Year
Oops! Christmas time and family celebrations have now come and gone. I hope that you practiced social distancing and followed the suggestions of our CDC and government mandates and stayed home. Yes, it was difficult not to visit with family and loved ones. But if we are to conquer our battle in this pandemic, we must do all possible to fight it. Just a few more days and it will be time for another celebration...2021 is just around the corner and we will be saying goodbye to 2020 and welcoming a New Year. All of us will no doubt be glad to welcome in a New Year with hopes that by the end of this coming year, this pandemic will be behind us. Staying at home has certainly given
me time to plan the tours for the coming year. Sometimes it is like pulling teeth to get hotels to furnish group quotes especially now when their capacity is reduced and monitored. Even so, I still am missing a few contracts and a few bus quotes. When you look at all the different tours that are offered, I do hope that you find several that you would like to be a part of. One of the local tours that I added last year was the most difficult one to sell and yet that particular tour received not one negative report. As I tried to determine why the tour did not sell well, I received the same answer more than once, ‘Women don't like the word Battlefields.’ So, we have renamed it - OUR BORDER
LAND - The Lower Rio Grande Valley. You will see and hear about the wall and visit sites that played a most impressive part in the forming of what we now call Our Valley Home. Participants will even drive by the newest historical development - the Space Center - on the way to view Boca Chica Beach. You will enjoy a fun day and partake of the best included lunch ever. As I noted before, this tour received not one negative comment. Your evaluations are especially important to me. I read every one and when, and if at all possible, I follow your suggestions as I attempt to constantly improve the tours. Several people requested that I offer Fredericksburg as it had not been offered for several years. Fredericksburg is a remarkably interesting town in the Texas Hill Country. For a small Texas town, it boasts the only Museum dedicated to the Pacific War. The town was settled by German immigrants, one of the largest ethnic groups in the United States. Bier Gartens and German food are still extremely popular in this area. Close by is the Texas White House, the former home of Lyndon Johnson.
DECEMBER 30, 2020 13
The tour is filled with visits to these well-known places. ********
And now how did you do on your Resolution for the New Year? Are you going to make a positive resolution rather than a negative one? Are you going to add something to your life that will enrich your life as well as the life of someone else? I promised I would help you out and here it is. How about choosing one day out of the week when you will make it a point to call someone that needs a little cheering up, a little caring. Instead of feeling sorry yourself and suffering with a "pity party", why not think of someone who is carrying an extra burden - perhaps the loss of a loved one, or an illness or maybe just someone who lives alone and would like to hear a friendly voice. I am adding that to my last year's resolution which was to remember to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ and a happy hello to all those I met. Let us go a step further and enrich some one's life. Let us be a positive influence in this world. Happy New Year!

According to one account, the chapel was built in 1899; another says it was first built at another site in 1865 then relocated to the present site. They built not just the Chapel, but also small cottages, a warehouse for provisions, and a store. There was also a 60 square foot plaza on the grounds. All but the chapel were destroyed during a hurricane. Nonetheless, it is known that the chapel became part of a project turning the former ranch into headquarters for Oblate priests, who rode along the river from Brownsville to Roma spreading Christianity and serving the people on the ranches bordering the river. The chapel is located about halfway between Brownsville and La Lomita Chapel Roma, which is a distance of 120 miles on the current expressway but was 300 miles when traveling along the curves and bends in the river. The La Lomita stood on a huge parcel of land. John Conway and James Hoit later bought 17,000 acres of the land for the development of the original town site of Mission. The City of Mission was named for the chapel. Conway is credited with being the founder of Mission. He came to the Rio Grande Valley in 1906. After visiting the Valley, he saw the potential for development and stayed to help make it happen. He and Hoit, were able to purchase the land for $9 an acre. He also purchased another 10,000 acres from John Closner and J.B. Wells. Conway-Hoit would clear and ready the land for agriculture and then sell it for $40 to $50 an acre. They sold the farmland in 40-acre tracts to farmers from the Midwest that were planning to relocate to Texas. Conway had planned the development of the townsite with alleys for garbage pickup, schools, churches, and libraries. Even though he was Catholic, he donated land to establish the Methodist, Baptist, and Presbyterian churches. These can all be found on Doherty Avenue in Mission. (You will find Spanish speaking ones on the south side of the tracks, and predominately English-speaking churches on the north

side.) He was also one of seven that organized the First State Bank. They began construction of canals and a pumping plant to help with the booming agriculture of the area. Crops such as sugarcane, wheat, cotton, and corn were becoming fruitful. But it was not too long before Mission was being advertised as “The Home of the Grapefruit” in posters advertising why people should come to the Valley – the “Garden of Eden.” John Shary is known as the Father of the Citrus Industry. On a coin toss when visiting the Valley, he decided to stay and pursue his dream of creating a citrus industry in South Texas. He saw untouched brush land ready for development. He started developing over 300,000 acres of land and made a mission to attract more settlers to the area. Seeing that the soil was fertile, Shary started growing citrus. He studied the soil, how citrus was grown in other areas, and developed his own method in the Valley. He eventually built the Texas Growers Exchange to market all the citrus fruit grown in the Valley. Shary coined the name TexaSweeet – a brand that can be found in your produce sections still today. By 1924, there were two million trees in grapefruit production and another million ready to be planted. Shary built a large home in what is now Palmhurst, on Shary Rd and Three Mile. The home is still surrounded by citrus trees. Because of Shary, we celebrate grapefruit, and other citrus, as part of Mission heritage with the Texas Citrus Fiesta. Texas Citrus Fiesta events are held throughout the year with the largest event, the parade, being held in late January. To find out more about the City of Mission, visit https://missiontexas. us/. The Mission Historical Museum (previously the Shary Building) can be seen at https://missionmuseum. org/. The museum features exhibits from the past, a wall and room honoring veterans of the community, and rotating exhibits that share the history of the City of Mission.
