So, the new year is here and my only thought, or type of resolution, is to work on myself more and finish some crafts that have been sitting around. I love to start things, but have a hard time finishing them. I have a cross-stitch project I started working on probably seven months ago and I have not even touched it for about two months. I have material cut out to make potholders. I have one side of squares cut out but have not done the others. I think that project has been sitting around for about two years.

First showcase next week

Every year the Activity Directors Association and Robert and Billie Ferguson put on two Showcase events. These events introduce the Valley’s activity directors to entertainment that comes to the Valley to entertain you. It gives them a chance to get an idea of what the entertainment is like, a sampling of what they do, and then an opportunity to book these Wintertainers™ for next season, or even the current season if spots are available. The event is not open to the general public, but only to Activity Director See SHOWCASE pg. 17 INDEX Parks Calendar “On the Road” Column Events Calendar Taste of the Valley Business Guide Classifieds

ARVP ladies working hard ironing, sorting fabric and sewing masks.

We all know Winter Texans contribute a great deal to the Rio Grande Valley during their winters with us. They often donate to local charities, help schools out with supplies, donate time to shelters and animals, gather food during the holidays for people here and in Mexico, and make quilts and other items for those in need. A new and urgent need caught the attention of a group of Alamo RecVeh Park (ARVP) women. These ladies, who primarily sewed quilts in the past, learned how to make masks… in a big way. In February and March when COVID-19 was really hitting and shutting things down, this group decided to shift gears. They started with See GIVING pg. 14

Edinburg: Historical reminders of the past

Edinburg, like many other Valley towns, was something quite small in the early 1900s, until Edinburg, then known as Chapin after the city’s founder, was selected as the new county seat in 1908. Official records, traveling by oxcart, made the journey from Hidalgo to Chapin to make the announcement. There is a little bit of history with Chapin and why the name was changed. Dennis Bangs Chapin was a former Hidalgo County Judge and land developer of the townsite. The town changed after Chapin shot a man named Oscar J. Rountree in a See EDINBURG pg. 16

Liberty hatches on the Sea Turtle Art Trail

South Padre Island is hatching a very special sea turtle on the Sea Turtle Art Trail at Beach Resort South Padre Island. Painted by local muralist and artist Christina Salazar, “Liberty” is a stunning tribute to the dedication and service of first responders and frontline healthcare workers. A heartbeat is painted on her shell and the overall theme takes on the Liberty is the newest addition to the Sea Turtle feeling of the flag in red, white, and blue elements throughout. “It only seemed appropriate to highlight the true, everyday heroes that not only serve our community but also strive to make us stronger and safer during these challenging times,” said Daniel Gomez, GM for Beach Resort. “We felt fortunate to have an opportunity to showcase our appreciation and admiration in a way that was both personal and in line with our island community.” “Liberty” is Salazar’s second turtle on the trail. In addition to the heartbeat, the turtle features the caduceus,

Enjoy the outdoors in Mission

Mission, being full of history, is also a hotspot for birding and butterfly enthusiasts. Mission also has a hiking and biking trail, a state park, and other sites to suit just about any interest. Having a little bit of everything in Mission, makes it a great place to visit any time of year. Bentsen State Park Bentsen State Park is part of the Rio Grande Valley’s World Birding Center park system. The park features trails, boardwalks, and an observation tower. It serves as the headquarters for the World Birding Center. The park currently sits on about 600 acres but has another 700 acres that is not open to the public. The habitat attracts most of the Valley specialties and serves as a gateway for many migrating birds. A butterfly garden is also on the property. Species spotted at the park include Green Jay, Altamira Orioles, White-tipped Doves and the Plain Chachalaca. Butterflies sited include the Red-bordered Metalmark, Common Mestra, Soldier, Empress Leilia and Tawny Emperor. National Butterfly Center The National Butterfly Center pro-

vides extensive outdoor gardens of native nectar plants and specific caterpillar host plants as well as natural habitats to attract large numbers of butterflies and to conserve rare native butterflies. The center has had several sightings of butterflies never seen before in the United States. The proximity to the Rio Grande River and Mexico gives the center an opportunity for species crossover. More than 300 species of butterflies have been found in the Rio Grande Valley, and over 200 have been seen at the Center. The Center is located at 3333 Butterfly Park Drive. Mission Hike and Bike Trail The Hike and Bike Trail includes a 5-mile paved trail that runs from the Mission Hike and Bike Park to the World Birding Center. It also includes a network of six miles of single-track that is scattered throughout the park. Signs on the trails note the difficulty. The park is located on Conway Avenue, south of the Expressway. MOSTH presents Killer Bees

Were you in the Rio Grande Valley in 1990? Do you remember the fear over a new insect introduced to the area? The Museum of South Texas History (MOSTH) present “Killer Bees! The Panic over Africanized Honeybees in the Rio Grande Valley” featuring Dr. Jamie Starling. The presentation is part of their Sunday Speaker Series that will be presented online on Facebook Live on Sunday, January 10 at 3 p.m. In October 1990, Africanized Honeybees arrived in the Rio Grande Valley, after decades of anxiety over the spread of this subspecies from Brazil to the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. This presentation examines the origins of the “Killer Bee” panic, the dreaded arrival of the bees in Hidalgo County, and the unexpected outcomes of this event. Starling will discuss more on the destructive, but less noticed, invasive pest that had far more devastating consequences for honeybees and agriculture in North American during this period. Starling is an associate professor of History at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and an affiliate in the Mexican American Studies Program. He has published articles on the Rio

Grande Valley, El Paso, and New Mexico on topics ranging from the colonial period through the Civil War. He also teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on American history with a focus on Texas, the American Southwest, and Borderlands. This program is made possible by the generous support from the Carmen C. Guerra Endowment. Mrs. Guerra was committed to educational causes in the Rio Grande Valley. This named endowment was created by her family to honor her memory and to continue providing educational opportunities for the community. The presentation will broadcast at facebook.com/MOSTHistory/ live. Guests are encouraged to interact with panelists with questions and comments posted on the live chat. The presentation will also be recorded and posted for public access on the Sunday Speaker Series Online portal at mosthistory.org. MOSTH is currently open with timed ticket admissions from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday to Saturday. You must make a reservation and purchase a ticket for admission. Visit their website for more details or call (956) 3836911.

Skits, music, and clean comedy

As Bob Courtney explains it, all he wanted to do after retirement was “drive the bus for my wife Alta.” Alta performed gospel music and, after 38 years as a PRCA rodeo clown, a retired Bob was ready for a change of pace. Bob had always made people laugh as a rodeo clown, and that trait didn’t leave him once he left the rodeo. Instead, he continued to make people laugh. “I started as a rodeo clown, traveled all over the world for years and did the comedy for that since I was 20,” Bob said. “When I retired and all I wanted to do was drive the bus; I started telling jokes and it turned into something we didn’t expect. “It kind of blossomed from there and the past five years have been really good to us.” Now, the “Redneck Revival

Show,” a combination/mix of clean country music and comedy, is performing at Winter Texan parks for the second year in the Rio Grande Valley. Bob, also known as Pastor Pudge, and Alta, aka Sister Sludge, have been performing in Branson, Mo., for the past eight years and have earned accolades such as Dinner Show of the Year, Comedian of the Year (five times) and many others. Bob was the original comedian at Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede in Branson and has worked with Parton along with country music great Glen Campbell. He is also known for being an animal trainer, having trained animals for movies and stage. Alta was a member of the original cast of The Promise, in Branson and was born into Gospel singing royalty. Her older brother is long-time Gospel star Gene Reasoner and her younger brother and sister make up the contemporary Gospel group “Of Mud and Mire.”

“I kinda influenced her in the wrong way,” joked Bob. “It’s not a standup comedy show but it’s a mixture of comedy with music and we’ll do some ventriloquism and imitations. It’s kind of like The Smothers Brothers.” The Courtneys even brought a flatbed trailer and stage lights to perform their “Redneck Revival Show.” Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many parks are limiting the number of shows and having the ready-made outdoor stage provides more safety and comfort for the audience and parks. Do not be fooled, however, “Pastor Pudge and Sister Sludge” are not really holding a revival – just having some fun with skits, music, and clean comedy – a modern day traveling “Hee-Haw.” “When I got to Branson, I wanted to be a big star and I got a job the second day I was there – selling popcorn at a train station – that’s how big a star I was,” Bob said. “Then two years later I got a job working for Glen Campbell. I showed up for the first show and I was standing on the side of the stage watching when he came up to me with a big smile and said, ‘Hi, I’m Glen Campbell.’ I told him I knew who he was, but he didn’t know who

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

I was.” Bob remembered creating their first DVD. It was a slow-moving beginning for the Courtneys so they decided to create a DVD to use for publicity and promotion. “We couldn’t gather a crowd when we started,” Bob said. “We wanted a DVD and had to rent a church, pay aP soundman and our entire family camep m to the show.” But, when one dabbles in comedy,m comedy subjects and situations seemi t to appear in the strangest times. “While we’re doing the show myT cell phone kept going off in my pock-F et,” Bob said. “My daughter was hav-W ing a baby and it just kept going offa and she had the baby the night we didp our first show. i “That’s how I remember how longo we’ve been doing this.” c Their recent CD includes “Ghostl Chickens,” “Wal Mart Greeter,” “Id am my own Grandpa,” and “Wouldp Jesus Wear a Rolex,” among others. Always a comedian, even the noticeW on the backside of the CD states:A “There were no chickens injured int f the production of this album.” For more information or to book a show, call (417) 849-4170 or visit bobandalta.com.

A trip to Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers is more than a trip to another burger joint. For me, this was like a trip back home. The burger patties are thin but bigger than the bun, filled with flavor and some savory crispiness around the edges. The seasonings Freddy’s uses do not get buried inside an inch-thick patty that gives off nothing but meat flavor. This, in itself, was unique and the way my mom would make burgers back home in New York. I took my burger with cheese, pickles, tomato and onions and the taste of home filled me even more. The pickles were oval sliced, the onion and tomato were fresh. I ordered my fries with chili and cheese, filled a couple tiny cups with their fries’ sauce, and soon had a large order sitting in front of me, with enough chili to have as a side order. Again, the flavor of both the creamy and jalapeno (not hot by any means, but tasty) was a delicious addition to an already tasty order of fries. Freddy’s also has a dry seasoning mixture that can be sprin-

kled over the fries, so there are many options for a dperson to enjoy. Of course, you cannot go to Freddy’s without having some of their frozen custard. I almost think it was dmade just for the Rio Grande Valley. Unlike most ice ncreams that quickly lose the “ice” part when you take it outside in the South Texas blistering heat, the same dcannot be said for the custard. . With all the benefits of ice cream, but with a thickoer and smoother flavor, Freddy’s has several options for the customer – from their signature sundaes (my adaughter had the signature Turtle Sundae and dug dinto it like I had never fed her before – she is now a ibig fan) to their concretes and shakes. So, the trip to “another burger joint” was anything but that. It was differently delicious, delivered quicksly and doled out in good portions. s Most importantly, you could enjoy the custard without it quickly turning into milk.

ON THE ROAD with Jo Liston

Remembering the Positives

It is a NEW YEAR! And let us hope that 2021 will bring an end to the pandemic and the problems we all encountered in 2020. Hopefully by midyear, we all will have been vaccinated and we will be on the road to our... ‘new normal’ or whatever is in store for us in our future. This past year was a very strange one indeed. Many have been very careful in following the advice of our medical experts - wear the mask, practice the social distancing, stay away from crowds and don't travel except when absolutely necessary for groceries and medical appointments. No family gatherings - not even for Christmas. That mandate was probably the most difficult of all. The stress, the fear and the anxiety did cause some problems. Statistics are showing that there have been more family disturbances, more abuse of women, more drinking, and more drug abuse than years prior. And yet for some families, there

was more sharing and more caring than ever before. Many couples spent more time with each other with the husbands even helping out in the kitchen. More than one woman has said that her husband has become more helpful. Mothers and older siblings have tried to find time to help the younger ones with online studies. Even though the country seemed more divided than ever, families often grew closer together. Churches and schools reached out to help. Neighbors and friends looked out for their friends and neighbors. These were the positives that the pandemic brought forth. Can we remember these positives? Can we keep them and nurture them so that they become a part of our lives? Yes, it is true - into each life some rain must fall. But after the rain comes the sunshine, the flowers, the sweet smell of the damp earth and of life renewed.

The ladies sent her more than 100 masks. Then, they donated over 1,000 homemade masks locally. JANUARY 6, 2021 15 RINA’S RAMBLINGS From pg. 1

I have mugs that I need to make the decals for. I have a canvas with some vinyl on it that I need to repair. I have jewelry pieces to make a set (necklace, earrings, and bracelet) that I just have not gotten to. And that one has been sitting around for about two years as well. This is a dreadful habit of mine. I always want to do something crafty, but I never get around to actually finishing it. I do this with books to sometimes. I begin a book, get about halfway into it, and for some reason, just do not read it to the end anymore. I used to be so into reading and now it feels like a chore at times. Myself – I just need to focus on some physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. Being a mother and a wife, I am always making sure everyone else is okay. I never really think about how I am doing. On a whole, I am a happy person. Yes, there are days I might be angry at something, or just not in the right mood, but typically I am happy. I am in a good place overall, but I do think

there is room for improvement – like developing better habits of eating, reading for me, reading my scriptures, praying more often, etc. These things would help my overall outlook – I know they will. If you did not set a resolution this year, see if you just need to do a little something for yourself, or someone else. Or do something like Jo is doing and just say ‘Thank you’ more often. ********

I am enjoying these city stories I have embarked on this year. If you have not had a chance to learn about the city you live in, I can honestly say it is fun. I have loved driving through the downtowns of these beautiful valley cities and seeing the old mixed with the new. I like seeing how the new sometimes still incorporate the architectural designs of the old. It makes the city landscape meld together. Learn about your community. Get out there when you can. Go for a walk. Visit your chamber or city website and learn about the place you call home.

Today, the university carries the name of University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley and carries a wide range of curriculum including hospitality and medical degrees, among others. A chamber of commerce was officially chartered in 1932 and, after having several homes, is presently located at the historical Southern Pacific Railroad Depot. The chamber has helped the city grow with its organization of the Edinburg Community Hotel, a new campus for the university, attracting businesses such as Haggar Apparel to the city, gathering support for their activity center and renovations to historic buildings such as the Edinburg South Pacific Depot. There are quite a few other places to see in the City of Edinburg. After visiting some of its historical places, events, entertainment, and food are a huge part of Edinburg. Events can usually be found year-round. Entertainment and events are also held at two prominent locations – The Bert Ogden Arena and the H-E-B Parks sports facility.

The city recognizes its musical heritage with their Tejano Walk of Fame (Located behind City Hall, 7th St., north of University Dr.). Every year during Hispanic Heritage Month, the city inducts Tejano stars and adds them to their walk of fame. The city also holds a Pioneer and Ranching Day that celebrate the heritage of south Texas and northeastern Mexico through music and hands-on activities. Edinburg also hosts the South Texas Film Festival, FridaFest, Edinburg Music Fest, the Night of Lights Parade, and many more events that add and celebrate the culture of the city. If you want to experience some outdoor time while visiting Edinburg, pay a visit to the Edinburg Scenic Wetlands and World Birding Center. The center offers 40-acres of scenic wetlands in the middle of an urban landscape. The center receives visits from migratory birds, waterfowl, butterflies and over 13 species of ducks during the winter months. For more information about Edinburg, visit expericenedinburg.com, edinburg.com, and mosthistory.org. Information on the World Birding Site in Edinburg, and others in the Rio Grande Valley, can be found at http:// www.theworldbirdingcenter.com/edinburg.html.
