Rina’s Ramblings
We have had several calls and emails about where the COVID-19 vaccine is being distributed. This is such a rapidly changing fluid situation that it is not feasible for us to disseminate this information in print. To stay up to date on this, please follow our Facebook and website for any updates. Also subscribe to our email newsletter. We will post information as new opportunities to book an appointment arise. We would encourage you to only use locations that are scheduling appointments for vaccines to ensure that you receive a vaccine and that your time is not wasted, and you do not step into a situation where you are exposed by waiting in a long line. In the meantime, check with your local pharmacies, clinics, hospitals, and county/city websites. Be sure to ask about any requirements before you arrive. McAllen’s historic growth continues today
McAllen has a long history even before it was officially incorporated on February 20, 1911. Some records have the development of the city going as far back as 1767 when some land grants were granted to Juan Antonio Villarreal and Antonio Gutierrez by the Spanish crown. The City of McAllen was developed from parts of these grants. Although, some of the dates might be skewed, most of the history of McAllen was gathered by the McAllen Library years ago before being shared with the McAllen Heritage Center when they opened. The Center says the information might not reflect full or fully accurate information, but it is as close as they have to the history and development of the City of McAl-

All of those monikers represent Jose Ybarra and for 21 years he has driven his portable market stand filled with produce and more to Winter Texan parks across the Rio Grande Valley. He brings good deals, fresh vegetables, fruits and more and when his truck appears in a park/resort, the lines start growing. While McAllen has seen a growth in business in the last 20 years, it has also seen a growth in what it offers for outdoor activities. The entire Rio Grande Valley is a huge birding hub. McAllen has not been left out in the birding area. McAllen features one of the W o r l d Birding Center’s at its historic Quinta Mazatlán. Quinta Mazatlán, built in 1935, features a Spanish Revival Style construction. It was a private residence and even included a Roman tub. Sitting at 10,000 square feet, it is probably one of the largest adobe structures in the State of Texas. With only two previous owners, the City of McAllen was able to purchase the property in 1998. It narrowly avoided being bulldozed by other interested parties. Quinta Mazatlán opened in 2006 as a “mansion with a mission,” as it states on its website. The site also features a 20-acre Tamaulipan Thornforest that, like other areas in the World Birding Center organization, are now protected. Quinta Mazatlan has seen 230 species of birds. A walk through the woods gives visitors a chance to observe and
listen to the local birds and visitors that migrate through the area. Not only does the home and its surrounding property make it ideal for birding, it is also an ideal place for receptions and event photos. It is an urban sanctuary that thrives to enrich people’s lives by sharing knowledge about birds, plants, and environmental stewardship in South Texas. When walking along the trails, there are plaques naming plants and giving a brief description of said plant. There are also plaques noting some of the history around the building like its irrigation canals. Other plaques are featured alongside bronze statues depicting animals that have roamed, or continue to roam, the area. Quinta Mazatlán has activities that teach about the habitat, birding, and conservation on a regular basis. Bird watching in your own backyard
January 5 celebrated National Bird Day. The International Museum of Arts and Sciences had presented a lesson on creating your own backyard bird log on their website. Just because the day has past, does not mean you still cannot make one. The information is still on their website and available any time. In 2002, Born Free USA, a non-profit focused on wildlife conservation, activism, and education, in collaboration with the Avian Welfare Coalition, launched the first annual National Bird Day to promote awareness of birds every January 5th. Many nature and bird lovers observe National Bird Day.

Product Costume Show this week
The Texas Citrus Fiesta (TCF) will host their annual Product Costume Show this week, Saturday, January 16. The event will be held at the Mission Event Center, 2425 Ruby Red Blvd., from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Each year, the Fiesta chooses a theme that participants carry on in their c o s tumes. T h i s year ’s theme is Let Your Dream Blossom. Participants t h e n walk the runway showing off their handmade creations. The TCF Product Costume Show is not your ordinary style show. The costumes designed for this uniquely American folk-art competition must be decorated using only agricultural products grown in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Over the years, the costume designers have become more and more creative about how to prepare a variety of local ag products – including citrus, of course – to create a palette of colors for their creative whims. All costumes must have at least 10 percent citrus, but also a variety of other products that are native to the Valley can be used. Products such as onion skin, which is often used for lace, bougainvillea leaves, for pink
colors, banana leaves, palm leaves and a host of other products are used. It takes many hours to make these costumes. Burnt citrus peel, purple onion skins, white onion skin, mesquite sawdust and dehydrated citrus leaves are just a few of the materials these creative designers use to achieve their almost magical transformation of raw materials into elaborate costumes for their models to showcase during the competition. The designers are judged on use of Valley products, variety of products, creativity, use of citrus and adherence to the theme, among other criteria. Costumes decorated with citrus originated in the 1930s as a marketing tool to draw national attention to the citrus industry of the Rio Grande Valley, and the tradition continues today. The Texas Citrus Fiesta has been a part of the City of Mission’s history for over 80 years. Events are held throughout the year to celebrate the harvesting of citrus across the Rio Grande Valley. Tickets to the event are $5 per person. For more information, call (956) 585-9724. Texas Citrus Fiesta offices are located at 220 E. 9th St. in Mission.

The coldest recorded temperature of 12 degrees was recorded at the Brownsville weather station. The Hidalgo Irrigation Company was founded in 1903. A railroad depot was opened in 1905. While William Briggs, O. Em. Jones and John Closner started their own tract of land and named it East McAllen in 1907. The first buildings in East McAllen included a Presbyterian Church, a grocery store, and the Osborn and Dewey residence. There was also a two-story building that Mr. Briggs moved from West to East McAllen. It operated as a hotel for the McAllen

There was a total of five stores, two taverns, two lumberyards and a population of over 300 in East McAllen. Big things in 1909 included the establishment of the McAllen Chamber of Commerce and the McAllen Monitor. Businesses continued to develop and relocate in the vicinity of Main Street in McAllen in 1910. On February 20th, 1911, the City of McAllen was incorporated, and Frank G. Crow was elected mayor. O.P. Archer was elected Mayor in 1912. By 1916, the population, although unofficial, was about 1,200. This is after the town experienced a boom in economic growth due to 12,000 national guard soldiers arriving to stop border banditry. In 1917, Archer deeded a one block square tract of land to the City of McAllen. After his death in 1930,

A former Donna Redskin football player, Ybarra also enjoys friendly banter with customers, who he knows most by name. “We are proceeding cautiously; but after the gloom of 2020, we wish to jumpstart 2021 on a positive note,” said Robert Codina, director. A non-juried exhibit featuring diverse works created by the Upper Valley Art League’s (UVAL) members will be on display through February 6. Paintings, drawings, photography, mixed media, digital art, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, and fiber arts, all handcrafted by student and professional artists will be shown in the public open exhibit. Open exhibits are not limited by theme, medium, process, or content. Upcoming shows will feature watercolor, photography, and fiber art. Individuals who are members may exhibit at UVAL, but artists who are interested in joining are invited to come by UVAL for membership information.
From pg. 5

Along with local parks and World Birding Center’s throughout the Valley, you have many places to catch a glimpse of the species that visit the Valley or call the Valley their home. The best place to start though, is your own backyard. People watch and observe birds for many reasons. Many scientists keep a count over the years of the birds they have seen for scientific research, others just really enjoy watching them for recreation. By keeping a tally of the birds you see in your backyard, you will engage in observation of the environment around you, and get to know it better, and the communities

of birds that live in your area. The website has a list of materials needed to make your own bird log along with a downloadable bird log of their own with directions. There is an activity procedure section that includes step-by-step directions on how to use their log or what you should have on your own. Suggestions are to have colored pencils to draw what you see and to take notes. A section on your log should include research you do on the birds you see and another section for how many times and what time of day you see a specific bird. Researching and figuring out what birds are in your area will also help in making decisions about bird seed if you want to see more birds. The protection of woodlands and green space is an important goal for Quinta Mazatlán, McAllen Nature Center the City of McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley. This goal is further illustrated with McAllen’s Nature Center. McAllen Nature Center features two miles of trails that traverse through 33 acres of native Tamaulipan Thornscrub habitat. Less than three percent of this native habitat remains in the Rio Grande Valley.
Over 200 species of birds, 80 species of butterflies, and 20 species of reptiles and amphibians have been spotted at the Center. Even the endangered Texas Indigo Snake and Texas Tortoise have been spotted. Other visitors to the park have included coyote, grey fox and javelina. Common guests include cottontail rabbits, opossums, and raccoons. From November through March, a high migration period for birds, birding stations throughout the park are maintained. Keeping these maintained offers more viewing opportunities. Visitors are welcome to walk, run, watch, and photograph wildlife. Bicycling, grilling, smoking and loud music are prohibited. Visitors must remain on trails. Hours of operation are Tuesday

group at the Visitor Center located on the ranch. The guided tours that begin in the lower Rio Grande Valley will generally tell you about the native flora and fauna along the way giving you a deeper knowledge of our Valley. Years ago, I took my first tour through the ranch as I played a pre-recorded record of what I was seeing. Regardless of how you choose to see the ranch all of the tours must stay on the 12-mile Loop Road that runs through the ranch. You will see herds of thoroughbreds, the famous long horns whose forebears made the long cattle drives to Kansas as well as handsome quarter horses as you travel the Loop Road. A well-orchestrated tour will also include the museum exhibiting saddles, a hunting car used on the ranch, rifles and life size pictures of ranch life in the 1930's. And no, you will not visit inside the Ranch House, but a guided tour that begins in the Valley should include a lunch of Texas Bar-B-Que. Richard King founded the ranch in 1853. At the age of 61, he died of cancer at the Menger Hotel in San Anto-

nio. At that time, the ranch was deeply in debt, but Henrietta, his determined widow, never gave up and kept the ranch intact. And so, it exists today but no doubt operating very differently than when first founded. Cowboys today may round up the cattle from a helicopter. Blocks of salt and hay bales are hauled into the pastures by pickup. A honk of the horn and the cattle come running to be first in line at the feed trough. Even so, the story of the young Richard who stowed away on a ship eventually becoming captain of his own vessels is a story Americans love. His salty language had to be cleaned up when he decided to woo the daughter of a Brownsville Presbyterian minister. He even attended prayer meetings and finally won the conquest when he married young Henrietta. Captain Richard King’s story is one that we all like to hear - it is the American dream. Come along and hear the story firsthand on the King Ranch Tour.

way in their beautiful dresses before the coronation event the following week. The event will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $50. The Event Center is located at 1509 Industrial Blvd. The Coronation of King Citrus and Queen Citrianna will take place on Thursday, January 28. The event recognizes the new court that will be in place for next year’s event. Again, the ladies will be introduced and then await to see who will be crowned. The King Citrus will also be crowned. King Citrus is traditionally an individual that has helped the agriculture business in the Valley. The event will take place at Mission High School’s Neuhaus Gym, from 7 to 10 p.m., at 1802 Cleo Dawson.
The cap of the Texas Citrus Fiesta events is the Parade of Oranges. The parade will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 30. Floats will line up at FM 495 and travel south down Conway Ave. to 1st St. If you still want to sign up to have a float in the parade, deadline is January 18. The TCF has categories for Winter Texan floats as well as other categories. There are several guidelines to follow including the fact that ¼ of the float needs to be decorated with citrus or displayed on the float. Guidelines and application are available on their website. For more information, visit https:// www.texascitrusfiesta.org/events, or call (956) 585-9724.

Pharmacy last week, and he informed us they received a small allocation, but that their patients need to make sure they visit their website to fill out an application and other requirements prior to making an appointment. As of press time, they have already committed their available vaccines. A very useful website can be found at https://www.dshs.state.tx.us/coronavirus/immunize/vaccine.aspx. You might be sure to bookmark it and visit it frequently. If you go down to the paragraph heading “If I’m eligible for vaccine now, how do I get one?” there are links for finding a hub provider near you and a vaccine availability map. The map is searchable by zip code and has markers that when highlighted gives you the information for the location so you can call for more information. The list of hub providers are Texas counties listed in alphabetical order with locations in those counties. Again, please call ahead to make sure vaccines are still available and to see what documentation you need to fill out. We will try to post accurate and up to date information on our website and Facebook as we receive
any new information.
