Visit Pharr for food and fun
Oh boy, it has gotten busy around here. Last week I was able to attend the first Entertainers Showcase and was impressed with the new talent that is ready to entertain. Jamie Layton, Todd and the Two-Tars, Larry’s Little Brothers, Lasting Impressions, and Johnny Moroko were some of the new ones for me to see and hear. Some of the regulars that we all love performed as well – Rick McEwen, Helen Russell & Co., Diego & Edith, The Piano Man, Festus, Kai, Redneck Revival and Mario. I am looking forward to this week’s showcase to see some more
The City of Pharr has seen a lot of growth and revitalization in recent years. As seen in other downtown areas I have been in this season, Pharr’s downtown is welcoming and features its history. Its historic buildings add to the character while newer buildings are revitalizing the area and making room for more commerce and entertainment. If you travel the Valley

Valley Star Awards tickets available Valley Star Awards tickets are now available. Although we are holding a show, there will be no awards portion of this year’s show. Since fewer Wintertainers™ were able to visit this year, and because attendance to concerts was limited, we decided to not do an award ceremony, but we still wanted to bring some great entertainment to the stage. along Business 83, you will likely see the epicenter of each of the Valley’s cities. Although some Valley cities have grown beyond the area of Bus. 83, Pharr highlights their downtown with large welcome sign over their main street. All of their city offices are close See PHARR pg. 16
Look for the butterflies
If you drive around the City of Mission you might notice something a little special. Every once in a while, you might just see a beautiful butterfly sculpture. Being home to the National Butterfly Center, it just seemed fitting for there to be butterflies of giant size around town to celebrate. These butterflies represent some of the 200 or more species that can be found in the area. What started as a small project in 2016 has now grown to over 40 sculptures throughout the City of Mission. I wonder if you can find them all. Maxilou Link, a previous president of the Upper Valley Art League (UVAL), saw the vision years ago after a trip to Mexico. While in Mexico, she visited the well-known mountain See BUTTERFLIES pg. 14

Styletto. The world’s first rechargeable SLIM RIC that combines style with high-tech hearing.
Styletto Features & Benefits
The city-block complex of the Museum of South Texas History (MOSTH) was once housed in the 1910 Jail, an artifact that has captured the attention and curiosity of the community. The jail, which was closed between 2012 and 2020, is the oldest standing historic structure in the city of Edinburg. It will open sometime in 2021 with allnew permanent and temporary exhibits. Hear more about the renovation of the building and installation of the exhibits during the Sunday Speaker Series Online presentation, “The 1910 Jail: Behind the Scenes,” at 2 p.m. on January 24 on Facebook Live. The museum closed the 1910 Jail building to the public in 2012 due to structural problems. After a successful capital campaign, Austin-based Pony Allen Studios was hired to assist museum staff design, construct and install the new exhibits such as “The 1910 Jail: An Arresting Artifact” and “Faces de la Frontera.” During the presentation, viewers will have an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at exhibit development that feature hidden treasures. Pony Allen, owner of Pony Allen Studios, is a museum exhibition designer with more than 25 years of experience in museum exhibition development, design and lighting, and project management. Pony Allen Studios specializes in creating engaging exhibits that inspire learning and enjoyment for visitors. The presentation will broadcast at facebook.com/MOSTHistory/live. This program is made possible by the generous support from the Carmen C. Guerra Endowment. Mrs. Guerra was committed to educational causes in the Rio Grande Valley. This named endowment was created by her family to honor her memory and to continue providing educational opportunities for the community. About Museum of South Texas History The Museum of South Texas History is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. It is located downtown Edinburg at 200 North Closner Boulevard on the Hidalgo County Courthouse square. Founded in 1967 as the Hidalgo County Historical Museum in the 1910 Hidalgo County Jail, the museum has grown over the decades through a series of expansions to occupy a full city block. In 2003, following the completion of a 22,500 square foot expansion, the museum was renamed the Museum of South Texas History to better reflect its regional scope. Today, the museum preserves and presents the borderland heritage of South Texas and Northeastern Mexico through its permanent collection and the Margaret H. McAllen Memorial Archives and exhibits spanning prehistory through the 20th century. The year 2021 started off as no other in our memories. Still reeling from the effects of the Corona pandemic, astonished and saddened by the breach at our Nation’s Capitol, we were left wondering what possibly could happen next. Almost overnight the world's attention was focused on the Rio Grande Valley when our nation's president announced he would visit Alamo to dedicate a section of "The Wall" that had been completed or repaired during his term. This would be his second visit to the Valley during his four-year term. Many were overjoyed and some were fearful that there could possibly be another confrontation between opposing factions. That certainly was not the case. In true Texas fashion, the visit was welcoming, orderly and organized. Whether you agree or disagree over the purpose of the visit, Texans and the citizens of the Rio Grande Valley were well disciplined and patriotic in their response. And that is the way it should be. Whether the wall is abandoned, destroyed, or continued, it is now a part of our Valley history. For many years citizens from the neighboring countries moved freely back and forth across the river. Businessmen living on this side actually had their business on the other side of the river. Daily they freely crossed the river to oversee their business. From Brownsville to El Paso, families had relatives on both sides of the river. Settlers discovered the area watered by the river and often married beautiful senoritas who had inherited large tracts of Spanish land grants bestowed upon their families by the King of Spain. Since Spain claimed what we now call Texas as well as what is now called Mexico, they could levy taxes as they wished while governing from afar. Eventually, taxes paid to Spain became exorbitant and citizens from both sides of the river joined together to fight successfully against Spain
with Jo Liston
for their independence. At the end of that war what had been known as New Spain became known as Mexico. Texas as we know it now was actually a part of Mexico. They say history repeats itself and that is exactly what happened. A few years later, the citizens living in this area did not like paying taxes to a government located so far away as Saltillo, Mexico. That war led not only to our independence but also to a disputed border between Texas and Mexico. The Battle of the Alamo, Goliad and the Battle at San Jacinto are all well-known battles from that War. Several skirmishes and battles occurred right here in the Rio Grande Valley. This area has played a major role in the history of our Nation and in the history of Texas. There have been tears and romance, forts, and supply depots along with a grand mix of two great cultures. If you really embrace the customs of both countries, you probably ate tamales on Christmas Eve and black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day. Heaven knows what part of the world gave us Butternut Squash Soup but when I shared my soup with a dear friend, the immediate response was that it tasted too sweet. So out came the serrano chilis to give it just the right amount of zing! What could be better than sharing the best of two worlds? To get a better understanding of the Border, how about the tour Peace and After, A Link to the Past. It is a good mix of our history and what has made us what we are today. This tour received only good reviews. Not one negative comment.

COVID-19 pandemic. “At the last supper, our Lord Jesus Christ commanded his disciples to teach all the followers, to do one final commandment, and that is to love others as he has loved us and of course Christ gave the ultimate sacrifice and he expects us as his children to do the same thing to people all around the world,” he said about why they do the mission projects. A current home project is at a children’s Christian service camp in Honobia, OK. Here they are building dorms, remodeling their dining hall, and completing a caretaker’s cabin. Foreign projects include building a multi-purpose building in Bacoos, Philippines. They are also building a safe house for girls at risk of sex trade and providing medical supplies to Gonaives, Haiti. Funds will also go to building water wells in several countries. “The most important things is that I’m able to do this with my family,” said Sam Ray. “It’s been a lifelong dream to be able to live and be able to do what I enjoy doing with my family
and my best friends.” Also joining the Texans are Duke Mason, a Giant of an Entertainer at only 46’’ tall, bass vocalist David Little, and BJ. On Sunday, January 24, they will perform at Christ Church of the Valley at 6 p.m. The church is located at 2900 Dr. Hugh Emerson Rd. in Brownsville. They will perform at First Baptist Church in Combes on Monday, January 25, at 2 p.m. The church is located at 402 Templeton. DONNA – The remote-control race car scene is in full swing in the Rio Grande Valley's Winter Texan parks. At least one park has also opened their doors for more than just winter visitors to compete as well. Bit 'O Heaven RV Park in Donna held its third Winter Texan Showdown, part of a season-long series and parks such as Victoria Palms, Fun and Sun, Alamo Rec and host Bit 'O Heaven attend. Several “outsiders” also attended the event, tuning up their cars and taking practice runs on the dirt track, which had improvements from the previous season including an off-road style track in the middle of the oval, and a wider oval for more “five-wide” passing opportunities. Participants were still signing up minutes before the racing began and there were around 40 cars already setting up for the day's festivities. In May, NASCAR, the self-proclaimed “Great American Sport,” returned to the track, making it the first American sport to return to competition since the COVID-19 pandemic. The sport missed eight races during
its pandemic pause but made-up half of those races during rare mid-week events, bringing back memories of the “old days” when drivers sometimes competed three or more times in a week. It seems only appropriate during this strange, new days where everyone seems to be creating their own new norm, that R/C racing followed its big-league counterpart. Maybe the biggest difference between NASCAR's reopening and the RGV R/C scene – other than size of the track and cars – are fans. None were allowed upon NASCAR's return, meanwhile, several attended the Bit 'O Heaven event, lining their chairs around the expanded and upgraded dirt track, as well as enjoying hamburgers, hot dogs or pulled pork sandwiches – as well as waiting to see if they were the 50-50 raffle winner. “We have locals here, parks and it's open to all racers – fast racers, slow racers, new racers. We pretty much have a class for everything,” said Scott Campbell, park manager and director of the races. “We've also started a membership for those in the parks where they can come and race pretty

much whenever they want.” The races take place on the third Friday of each month. This was the third event of this season. The Winter Texan Showdown is part of the season-long series. The event provides some normalcy to those who have become part of the fast-growing R/C racing in the Rio Grande Valley, a place that many Winter Texan competitors say has more tracks in it than just about anywhere. “We'll have a lot of show car trucks and cars, stadium vehicles, buggies – just about anything they bring, we'll have a class for them,” Campbell said. “Usually everybody is here in January and there are a lot of races going on. This even here usually has more people than any of them but COVID is slowing it down,” Campbell said. “A lot of parks are shutting down everything and they're not willing to do anything, but they see us doing it so there's hope that next year there will be plenty of things to do.”

Many parks have offered a smattering of activities, adhering to not just the health and safety protocols brought about by the pandemic, but also taking into account the wants of their residents. Shuffleboard, bingo, bean bag toss and others are still taking place at several parks. Other parks have also started having entertainment. Most, however, are keeping safety first and allowing just park residents. Paul Sterkowitz, a Fun n Sun RV resident and one of the park's RC club coordinators, said he's glad for the opportunity to attend the Bit 'O Heaven events, and it's not just for the racing. “Our park has shut down a lot of things, like so many other parks,” he said. “So I really enjoy getting a chance to do this and especially the camaraderie. I've made a lot of friends through events like this and it's especially important these days to have something like this.”

As I perused the jam-packed menu from Los Comales Restaurant at 151 ½ N. Texas Ave. in Mercedes, one item in particular seemed to capture my attention – Poquito de Todo, or A Little of Everything. I usually avoid these types of plates because, while I like a whole lot of different food, there's usually something that doesn't quite meet my liking, or when it says A Little, it usually means “A Little Less.” That certainly wasn't the case in this situation. The plate consisted of two enchiladas, Panchos with fajita (every chip was loaded with fajita, cheese and a jalapeno slice), one chalupa, one beef quesadilla, rice and beans. And it covered the plate – completely. What may have been most impressive was how the architects in the kitchen were able to pile so much food on a plate and not turn it into a mismatch of everything where you just dug your fork in and played guess what's in my next mouthful? Each item had its own section on the plate, it didn't mix with any other item (well, a couple pieces of rice and a runaway strand of lettuce may have found their way into something else) but it was structured and or-

ganized and full, similar to how my mom would pack a suitcase, as opposed to me or my dad. The overall amount of food was great, the variety greater and the comfort I felt from digging into each item may have been the best of all. I was ready to nap even before I reached for my heavily filled beef quesadilla inside a homemade flour tortilla. I asked for some salsa other than the mild pico de gallo they brought with my chips and what they delivered was a highly flavorful red sauce, with just a touch of heat. You could also tell that this town heavily supports the Mercedes Tigers football program and other athletics. I arrived about 10:50 a.m. (the restaurant is open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily) and there were several customers – ranging from around five years old to somewhere in the 70s age range) wearing their Tigers orange, from lanyards to facemasks to T-shirts and more. It truly gave it a hometown feeling. I ordered the milanesa de pollo to take home to my daughter, a junior at McHi who was “in class.” When she opened her take home box, her eyes lit up at a large piece of deliciously battered milanesa. “Quick dad, get the ketchup please!” Usually I can go back to her room, knowing that there was going to be some leftovers for me. When I opened her door to peer in, the box lay on the floor next to her bed. When I opened it, ready to try even the smallest leftover piece I was saddened – all I saw was the bottom of the box. She ate it all. We both had large plates of delicious food at Los Comales and we both ended up finishing not a little, but all, of everything. Next time I'm in Mercedes for a sporting event, I'll definitely stop here.

It has been fun to work on these Valley city history stories for the paper this year. I hope to continue next season with some of the smaller, less visited cities. It has been rewarding to drive through the cities and see things I have not seen before, or haven’t paid attention to on a previous visit. Take Pharr… I think the last time I had been in that downtown area was in 1992 – And a LOT has changed since then. I remember going to the El Centro Mall with my parents back in the mid 80’s when Montgomery Wards was there and hanging out with friends there nearly 15 or so years ago to go dancing or see a movie. Pharr has revitalized that mall/shopping area to something people want to go now. There is something there for everyone. There were buildings downtown that I wish I knew more about – like the Texan Hotel and a building that looks like it may have been an old theater. I still have a few more cities planned before the season is over and look forward to finding more treasures that we might not always see.

destination migration site of Monarch butterflies. “I was enthralled in seeing trees that didn’t look like trees because of how they were packed with the butterflies,” she said. “The Monarchs were like a cloud when they left their perches, landing on pathways and on the tourists’ head, shoulders and arms.” She decided then that she wanted to do something to beautify the city that she lived in and loved. She began thinking of those butterflies and about how many of the species travel through the Rio Grande Valley during migration periods. The lower Rio Grande Valley is host to more than 300 species of butterflies, according to the National Butterfly Center. The Center has recorded over 200 species of butterflies. About 40 percent of the 700 plus butterfly species that are found in
the United States, can be seen in the three-county area of Hidalgo, Cameron, and Willacy. The southernmost tip of Texas, with its subtropical climate is ideal for the migrating butterflies, including rare types that draw visitors coming to the Rio Grande Valley just to see them. Link originally hatched the idea during a sculpture class that was taught by locally well-known sculptor Douglas Clark. They discussed the idea of creating the butterfly sculptures and how they would beautify the city and draw attention to the center. It did not go over very well though during the first conversations. In 2014, the discussion re-emerged, and with the support of Clark and UVAL, they were able to take a claylike butterfly to then Mission Mayor Norberto “Beto” Salinas. Pleased

with what he saw, and after city council agreed, they had a Queen butterfly sculpture placed in front of city hall in 2016. The painted sculpture has a modification the other butterflies do not have. It features an extended leaf, making it is possible for an individual to sit next to the butterfly for a photo opp. The base of the sculpture is made of fiberglass with intricate details of a branch tree bark and leaf. The body of the Queen Monarch is also fiberglass, from which a chrysalis dangles underneath, suspended by a steel cable. The antennae are made of flexible wire to reduce breakage. The city followed with the purchase of 10 more, slightly smaller butterflies of the Monarch and other species. By 2018, there were 25 butterflies throughout the city. Today, there are over 40. Link had been driving up and down Conway Avenue looking for good outdoor locations for these butterflies.
The city, ultimately decided on the sites for the installations, and most of the locations were where Link had wanted them. Throughout the project, Link invited individuals, businesses, and organizations to sponsor a butterfly. The cost is $550 unpainted, or $1,000 fully completed and installed. She had a catalogue listing types available that included the Barrel Slasher, Giant Swallow, Fiery Skipper and Tawny Emperor – as well as the popular Monarch. Link found several student helpers from area schools and others interested in the project to help paint the sculptures. Automotive paint is used to protect against the sun and weather. While the base, leaves and body are all fiberglass, the wings are made of steel. Each butterfly is different in style and color. Several Winter Texan Parks have butterflies including Oleander Acres RV Park, Fiesta Village RV Park, and Green Gate Grove. Fiesta Village’s

to each other and close to the downtown commerce. They even have two areas by the city building that allow for entertainment opportunities and food trucks. After originating from a Spanish land grant made in 1767, Pharr became incorporated in 1916. It was 1909 when Home Connely Kelley and Henry N. Pharr arrived in the area and bought 16,000 acres of land. Both of these men helped found the area. Pharr, a sugarcane grower, founded the Louisiana and Rio Grande Canal Company. This company was to help with the construction of an irrigation system for sugar plantation. Kelley, on the other hand, formed the Pharr townsite Company. In 1911, the townsite became a stop on the St. Louis, Brownsville, and Mexico Railway. By then, thousands of acreages had been sold to settlers. The townsite had a depot, hotel, and bank. Regrettably, the sugarcane business went bust. Kelley took over the irrigation system and helped supply water to vegetable and cotton farmers. By 1915, the population was a small 600. When Pharr was incorporated in 1916, it formed the Pharr-San
Juan-Alamo ISD with its neighboring communities. By 1920, the city’s population had doubled, and by 1960 the population was nearly 5,000. There was even a vote to merge with McAllen in 1956 that was defeated. The population in 1990 was nearly 33,000. In 2019, the population was estimated to be just over 79,000. Pharr’s downtown area features old shops, restaurants, and more. It was nice walking down the street and seeing the old mixed with new and how some were keeping that older architecture alive even in the newer buildings. Some sites to see in Pharr include the downtown park “Hub” area. The park includes the food truck area and an entertainment area. I visited around lunch time last week and employees were enjoying their lunches at the park. Pharr is a city of food places. An older restaurant in the area is the Junction Café. It is located at Cage and Bus. 83, right at the beginning of downtown. Part of Pharr’s revitalization includes what was once called El Centro Mall. It is now dubbed the Pharr Town Center and looks like a new place. The
“THE BIGGEST RV CONSIGNMENT SELLER IN SOUTH TEXAS”
center features a remodeled Cinemark Theatre, Academy, Main Event, some cultural cuisines, and other of interest stores. In the parking area you will also find Pappadeaux and one of the few remaining Luby’s. Pharr is also the home of Tierra Del Sol Golf Course. The golf course has been featured in our golf editions quite regularly. They have been voted as the top golf course several times as a loved golf course by Winter Texans.
