Yep… another busy week has gone by. Despite the dreariness of a few wet days last week, it flew by fairly fast. I had a great time last week visiting with the activity director at Oleander Acres. She stays busy at the park coming up with ideas to keep the residents occupied. She has had to come up with new ways to do activities. One of them includes her arts and crafts time. She has also been painting up a storm. Not just her rocks that she will be hiding, but also signs representing where residents are from. I hope to visit the park again when

More to discover in San Juan and Alamo

If you drive along the expressway, now I-2, heading south from Pharr – which I covered last week – you will find Pharr’s neighboring cities, that all share a school district with, San Juan and Alamo. The most distinct thing about San Juan is the Our Lady of San Juan del Valle shrine. It was designated a national shrine in 1998 and the following year, Pope John Paul II designated it as a minor Basilica. The history of the shrine begins in 1920, when Reverend Alfonso Jalbert, OMI, built a small wooden chapel in San Juan as a mission church of St. Margaret Mary Church in Pharr. The origins of the devotion to Our Lady of San Juan del Valle can be

Rocks of Kindness, Spreading the Happy

Tammy Garrison-Maier has found a fun way to keep the residents at Oleander Acres active. As the activity director, Tammy has had to come up with new ways to entertain the residents and keep them on their toes. She started something last year before the Pandemic, and since it was such a hit, she is doing it again. She is hiding beautifully painted rocks around the park. The fun is, if you find one, you get some chocolate. You have a choice of keeping the rock or hiding again for someone else to find. “I’m spreading the happy,” she said

about the endeavor. And it spreads. She said when someone finds a rock, she can see the pure joy in their faces. “And who doesn’t like chocolate,” she added. Since March last year, she, and others in the park, have had to think of new ways to keep busy. Tammy said they have been able to do outdoor bingo games, arts and crafts projects and drive-thru meals. It’s all a win-win, she says about the activities and the hunt she is getting ready to announce. She said the drive-thru dinners look See ROCKS pg. 16

Making a movie can be fun and if you are a beginner most experts will tell you, first start with a short film to practice the craft and work your way up to a feature. One of the most important aspects of filmmaking is having a decent script to begin with. Writing good dialogue for characters and stories will help you. Pharr Community Theater is offering teens and adults online screenwriting classes for beginners, with RGV independent filmmaker and producer Robert Longoria.

Another essential for the movies are actors. Famous movie actor, producer and director, Clint Eastwood, says, “you’ll have less problems on a movie set when you cast right.” In other words he prefers to work with actors who either have training and knowledge about performing or in some cases raw talent. Pharr Community Theater is also offering acting classes for kids and teens. Both classes will run between Feb See PCT pg. 5

Styletto. The world’s first rechargeable SLIM RIC that combines style with high-tech hearing.

Styletto Features & Benefits

The City of McAllen has once again partnered with the Juneteenth community leaders, this time, to participate in a month-long list of activities in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. They started celebrations on Monday, January 18, and are continuing through Black History Month. “Martin Luther King, Jr. was truly an inspirational man,” said McAllen Mayor Jim Darling. “In light of recent events, the celebration of MLK’s non-violent methods of protest are more important than ever, as is this quote by him: ‘We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.’” This year’s observation will feature events throughout the Rio Grande Valley, celebrating the theme “Building a Stronger CommUNITY Through Service.” According to Dr. Ray Howard, one of the organizing members of the celebration, the activities will focus on the historical roots of the African-American community in the Rio Grande Valley, the cultural contributions throughout the country, as well as examining the political impact of MLK and its relevance today. “In a community such as McAllen and the greater Rio Grande Valley, acknowledging our history, as well as forging ties with the community at all levels will lead to greater understanding and acceptance of us all as God’s children,” said Howard. On Monday, February 1 through Friday, February 26, the McAllen Public Library, 4001 N.23rd Street, will host a variety of activities including a lecture series; documentary on the City of New Orleans with McAllen Public Library Librarian Julia Reed; “Food for Thought” with Nicole January and Chef Ty, a prerecorded program about soul food; and Children’s

Patrick Neel heard all the motivation he needed as he rounded the bases. “Run faster, run faster,” the frantic voice of his wife Darlene echoed from the stands. “I'm running as fast as I can,” Neel laughed. In the end, Neel went into the scorebook as hitting a grand slam. It was during the Winter Texans U.S. versus Canada game that signals the end of the Winter Texan softball season. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, there probably will not be any such game this season. But that has not stopped the Winter Texans from showing up at the McAllen softball fields on Ware Road four days a week to hit, run and catch some balls. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, it is the “A” league, the heavy competitors. On Mondays and Wednesdays, it is the “B” league. “It's more like a recreational league,” said Ed Martens, the man who is the face of Winter Texan softball. “The emphasis is on fun.” “We don't get mad, we don't get angry,” said Neel, who has lived in Bentsen Grove Park in Mission with his wife since 2013. “We have fun here. We like to win, but if you don't, it's no big deal. We're here for the camaraderie and to have a good time. We love the sport and we're out there playing, exercising, and having fun.” Neel, a lifetime Chicago Cubs fan, plays third base, which means he

has a big gun for an arm. He agreed, somewhat. “I've got maybe a .22,” he joked. “Hey, I can get it there.” Sam Ferguson, who is from the outskirts of Columbia, Mo. and lives with his wife June in Split Rail RV Park in Mission said he discovered the softball league while looking for a place to live. Like every other Winter Texan who seemingly has ever played softball in the Rio Grande Valley, Ferguson called on Martens. “He said come on, just show up. This is my seventh year here and seventh playing ball,” said Ferguson, a Cardinals fan who jokingly didn't have anything great to say about fellow baller Neel. “Yeah, so they've won a few games finally.” The Cubs and the Cardinals are long time bitter rivals. Ferguson was a four-year letter-winner on his high school baseball team and then played two years in college before he entered the U.S. Navy. “Then I played some town team baseball and drove all over the place,” he said. “Then started playing softball with the church team after I realized I couldn't play with these younger guys anymore. I was rounding second base once and pulled two muscles in one leg at the same time. Then I never really picked up a ball other than to play See SOFTBALL pg. 15

A Valley favorite: Ralph Kuster

Ralph Kuster has been a Valley favorite for several years. He is well known for his variety of acts, wide-ranging vocals and the energy he puts into his shows. With what he does now, you would not believe that he spent many years teaching golf. When not teaching, he could be found singing something in his car, in his room, or anywhere else he had a chance to sing. His love for singing eventually led him to pursuing a career in music in 2005. It was in 2006, performing in Nashville, where someone told him he needed to go to Branson. He later found out that someone was a member of Toby Keith’s band. Once he got to Branson, he created his own show and rented his own theater, paying for all the expenses of running a show. It was a struggle, he said, but he kept going. By 2008 he had a leading one-man show in Branson. In 2012 he was encouraged to attend the RGV Showcase by Wade Landry and has been visiting the Valley every winter since. Starting with just four shows the following year, Kuster has found he loves the area and loves the people. Now, after chasing his dream, he has been able to find some success and lots of joy in what he does. He has a passion for music, per-

forming, and touching hearts. “I want to use my voice to touch lives. I put my heart and soul in every song, in every show.” While he has a library of songs he can perform, he says it is impossible to mimic voices such as George Jones and Frank Sinatra. There are very few entertainers he chooses to mimic, instead he interprets each song with his own voice. Kuster has 10 two-hour shows that he performs. Each show has a video presentation for every song that his sister and brother-in-law have worked to create. He can also tailor a show to meet specific musical and time-restricted preferences. His shows include a Valentine’s Show, Timeless Treasures, Tribute to Frank Sinatra and Friends, Tribute to Elvis, Neil and Friends, Classic Country, Broadway and the Movies, a Variety Show, St. Patrick’s Day, a Tribute to Veterans, and other holiday shows. He will be performing at the Gospel Fest with Lindley Creek, Rusty Rierson and Absolutely County, Definitely Gospel, and other shows in the Valley. Kuster is available for bookings and can be reached at (417) 230-8198 or at ralphkuster@sympatico.ca. For Kuster’s schedule, visit his website at http://www.ralphkuster. net/ or view his profile on our website.

off the show. Rusty Rierson lent his voice to some country favorites as did Curt James. Rierson, as usual, can not leave the stage without sharing some cowboy comedy. Monroe Sun performed songs during the Sun Records era like Great Balls of Fire and others. Pat Davison, Super Comedy Show, livened up the crowd with his humor and juggling. At one point he and his wife were taking turns juggling bowling pins. Lindley Creek, who have been performing in the Valley for 12 years, did not disappoint with their beautiful voices and blends. They play up the crowd with their spirit, bluegrass, and a little bit of country. Ralph Kuster presented some samplings of his talents. He has ten twohour themed shows he can perform but can also tailor more to your needs as well. Lastly, was Johnathan Len, who

really played up the crowd and had the ladies in the front screaming as he walked around jiving and singing Elvis. These showcases are available to activity directors that are members of the Activity Directors Association. There are two every year at the beginning of January. All of the artists performing are trying to book for the coming year and this is when to get first dibs on who you want at your park. If you are interested in becoming a part of the Activity Directors Association, call Billie Ferguson at (865) 253-2514. ON THE ROAD with Jo Liston

Mavericks and cattle

Photo courtesy of Betty Spellman Detmer TEXAS! What a huge state we live in with a history as big as the state. Texas was tamed originally by settlers who established ranches and farms so big they boggle our minds. Those early settlers, those men of vision left their mark on Texas - Richard King who fulfilled our American dream of from rags to riches was just one of those many famous settlers who left their mark on Texas. One of those marks is the word “maverick.” It is said that deep down every true Texan wants to be a maverick. Now just what does that word mean? Supposedly a maverick is a person who is untethered, who thinks and acts on their own, maybe even a free spirit, a person who thinks out of the box. A maverick does not follow the herd. Originally, cattle that were not branded were termed mavericks. It seems that a gentleman land speculator from Kentucky named Samuel Maverick settled in Texas in 1835. Now Sam was a lawyer and a legislator who knew the value of land even though he was not particularly fond of ranching or farming which was just about the only thing you could do with Texas land in the mid 1800's. Sam Maverick owned land in downtown San Antonio and ranches in Matagorda Bay and Eagle Pass. Sam Maver-

ick also did not believe in branding his cattle. That must have been convenient for cattle often ran loose and unbranded during that time. One way to increase your herd was just to incorporate those open range unbranded cattle into your herd. One of his land holdings near Matagorda Bay was managed by an employee who always answered when asked, “Whose cattle are those?" that they were Mavericks. And so maverick came to mean free roaming cattle that had not been branded and did not follow their herd. Today, the word maverick has become very popular. Not only does it apply to people, but the word is often used as a brand name such as Alpine's Maverick Inn, The Maverick Ranch RV Park in Lajitas and the Maverick Grill in Santo, Arlington, and Floresville. The Dallas Mavericks won the 2011 NBA championship by playing the maverick way. And Eagle Pass? Guess what? Eagle Pass is in Maverick County. Those early settlers, those men of vision like Richard King, Sam Maverick, Oliver Loving and Charles Goodnight of the Goodnight Loving Cattle Trail, all left their mark on Texas. Can we live up to the heritage they left us? Or shall we just follow the herd?

traced back to Mexico in the 1600s. The devotion sprung from a child being brought back to life after a fall and using an image of the Virgin Mary and prayer for that miracle. In 1949, the Rev. Jose Maria Azpiazu, OMI, was convinced that fostering a devotion to Our Lady of San Juan would benefit the people of the area of San Juan. Upon receiving permission, a reproduction of the statue in San Juan de Los Lagos was reproduced and placed in the San Juan chapel. A shrine was built five years later and dedicated to the Virgen de San Juan. It was a miracle in 1970, when a small low-flying plane crashed into the roof of the shrine and exploded into flames. The miracle was, that even though there was a mass of 100 people (including priests) in atten-

dance, and 100 school children in a nearby cafeteria, that the pilot was the only fatality. The statue was rescued from the Shrine. A new, bigger, shrine was dedicated in 1980 with an estimated 50,000 people in attendance. Today, there are statues around the grounds depicting the stations of the cross. There is a walkway around the Shrine for easy viewing of each station. Mass is held in the Shrine on a regular basis. Established in March of 1910, the City of San Juan was incorporated in 1917. San Juan is referred to as “The Friendly City” and the heart of the Rio Grande Valley. The Oblate Fathers that helped found other Valley cities by spreading Christianity along the border also visited the area before building missions in Mission and other cities. I think I'm better now.” Good or bad, fast or slow, it's clear that they're all having a good time. “Come out and look us over,” Martens said. “Everyone is welcome.” Martens should know – he has welcomed everyone. From pg. 1

like date night to some. It is fun seeing them come through for their meals, she added. You can tell they are making a night out of it. One night they served over 50 meals in just an hour and a half. The park serves tasty meals at least once a week, and cinnamon rolls too on a few days. The pickup window even gets all decked out with decorations of whatever holiday is around the corner. “The goal is making them happy,” said Tammy. The park is even able to use their own homegrown vegetables and herbs from their park garden. The park has a community garden and a beautiful butterfly garden. It was not a very pretty day when I was out there to get pictures, but the parks’ Facebook page features the many birds and butterflies that have been spotted in the gardens. But … Let’s get back to the rocks. Tammy has been spending time this past month painting rocks that feature more of a Valentine’s Day theme. She plans to hide the rocks on February first and let the hunt begin.

There will be at least 50 rocks to find hidden throughout the park. Rocks can be found with hearts, balloons, birds, or a simple message – All beautifully painted by Tammy. Painted rocks have been a thing across the globe lately. Much like Pokémon Go and then geocaching, finding painted rocks has been sort of a kindness scavenger hunt. It has a simple premise of finding flat, smooth rocks and painting the rock as creatively as you can. You can write instructions on the back of the rock – like post a picture on a certain Facebook page, tag a place, hashtag it with a certain code word, etc. Tammy has directions for finders to take a picture with their rock and share it on social media. In the nationwide trend, the rocks can be found anywhere – on hiking trails, the grocery store, a popular location – just waiting for someone to find them. Usually, a person keeps the first rock they found, but then continue hiding any others they have found, or make one of their own to hide.

It is about spreading the happy. As one website says about the search – “For those of you going through hard times, or simply needing a small pick-me-up, creative do-gooders are out to spread a bit of happiness through small hand-painted rocks.” There are more than 500 rock painting groups that have been formed

across the United States. If you do not have a chance to find a rock in the Rio Grande Valley, you might be able to find one at your summer home. Be on the lookout wherever you are. Or join the fun and paint some rocks of your own for others to find. Be a part of spreading the happy.
